We worked with The Heartbreakers , his group with The Mc5’s #waynekramer in Gang War and Johnny solo. Johnny was such a great tragic artist who died way too young. Heroin ripped the life from so many talented artist. My fave Thunders show was a late one after we produced the 1st Jesus and Mary Chain show in Detroit, we had the wild red head of Creation #alanmcgee at Detroit’s Asylum. This album - feels like a bridge between The UK’s punk scene meets NYC’s Scene - and as only this former New York Doll could make this happen! Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F. (Track Records cat. 2409 218) I was genuinely saddened to hear of the passing of Walter Lure. The Heartbreakers and their only studio LP were insanely important to me in forming my own definition of what it means to be Punk Rock... and to recognize when something is not. The opening riff of L.A.M.F. sounds like the band had no idea they were about to start. That is not a bad thing, at all. They immediately launch into their attitude filled anthem, "Born To Lose,” after Jerry Nolan prepares to keep everyone on point with one pounded beat. Thunders voice is squeaky, sounds as if he may gargle with shards of metal and every word is affected by his snarling NYC accent. It is a perfect voice for Punk Rock. Walter Lure is the perfect match for Thunders both guitar and vocals. Walter sings with a smile but it seems like he is just trying to lure you in to kick your ass. Regardless of his intention, he seems to be genuinely having fun. Billy Rath does a great job dealing with the talents and egos as he holds it all down with what sometimes seem to be happy rhythms. They bounce along like a child running down a sidewalk and all you can think is, he is going to wipe out, and it is going to fucking hurt like hell. All you can hope is that he is one of those kids that pops right back up and keeps running. Lucky for us, Rath is. The song titles and lyrics of L.A.M.F could grace the back cover of any 50’s vocal group. The difference is, Thunders spits every word at you, he isn’t hoping to console, he is threatening even when he says that he loves you. When he isn't spitting words he shouts them, unless he is singing his own back-ups full of emotion with repetitive lines like, “It’s Not Enough.” When he does this, he sounds as if he is about to cry. I have six versions of this LP, and that is only after I sold off several others. Every member of this band will be missed.
