Okay but-
Tumblr media
I love that they included Runaan having "shoot before thinking" reflexes because of course he does.
He's been training and working as an assassin for so long it's ingrained into his very soul. And he can't just turn it off. Look at his genuine shock when he realizes who he's been shooting at. He drops his bow. And we know with how much care he treats that weapon usually.
Even later when Ethari asks about him shooting at Rayla, he defends himself by saying he didn't know it was her, implying that he shot before looking.
Tumblr media
I think it's also interesting to see that he tries to change the topic towards Rayla rather quickly. As if he knows that his work and his reflexes have made him dangerous, even to his loved ones, and does not want to talk about that.
Tumblr media
Even though Rayla clearly isn't bothered by almost getting shot, Runaan is. We see him having an overly emotional reaction exactly twice and both times it’s concerning his work and Rayla. The first one is the above panels where he is scared that he almost shot her and directs that fear towards her instead. The second is just a few pages later when talking to Rayla about his job as an assassin.
I'm am wagering that this happened before by the way that Ethari doesn't ask anything else after Runaan tells him he didn't know it was her. Probably even frequently, especially at the beginning of their relationship when Runaan wasn't used to having him around yet.
Tumblr media
The face of a man realizing he almost shot his adopted daughter on accident.

The beauty of The Queen's Mercy
I doubt it struck any of us before that Kimdael's collar was of importance. Taken to be just a jewelry element, but never of Sunfire make.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at this, it's been centuries now and the collar is still on her neck in The Bloodmoon Huntress...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there is an interesting implication I've gleaned after reading the story, here come the first thoughts...
In the new short story, The Queen's Mercy, Kimdael goes to Lux Aurea to seek the Protection of Queen Aditi. Protection from the dragons who had driven Moonshadow Elves out of their own forest and "killed them one by one" leaving only Kimdael.
Which we know is a lie, because the moonshadow race is perfectly fine in the show and that does not make her the last of them. Also, multiple times, she pretends to plead while it is evident that inside she is plotting something. That her visit to Lux Aurea is for another crime. She pretended to be meek to gain Aditi's protection. But she is there for a different motive for why else would the Bloodmoon Huntress walk in broad daylight?
As Zubeia mentioned, there was a time when, after the death of Luna Tenebris, the dragons fought over succession. So their wrath is very real. And Xadia did descend into chaos... but Lux Aurea held strong through it. So it seems evident that of someone wanted to seek protection at the queen's mercy, it was the place.
What is interesting is that the dragons killing other moonshadow elves. Specifically the reaction of the other elves in the court:
Tumblr media
It may seem like a rumour because we know moonshadow elves lived and that Kimdael is lying. Or perhaps twisting a truth...
Given reason, the dragons could have attacked the moonshadow elves, if they decided to intervene and help sort the matter. It is possible that the moonshadow elves are hiding from the dragons and that no one has seen them in a while that Kimdael's desperate plea raises the question in the minds of the court elves that it could be truth.
But Aditi sees through it and takes her to the forge where upon, she makes the ornament and puts it red hot, and burning, sealing it around Kimdael's neck. Even enchanted so if Kimdael tried to kill her, the collar will choke the huntress, and thus it binds her to the Sunfire royal line.
Here's where it gets messy. Aditi says:
Tumblr media
As of what Kimdael said, she pledges in return, the remainder of her entire life to repay the Queen's Mercy. And this moment a spark:
Tumblr media
The collar can only be removed by a member of Aditi's line. Kimdael is bound to servitude.
That leaves only TWO people: JANAI and KARIM...
The question is... who will remove it? More importantly, who will Kimdael side with?
One obvious answer is... well, Karim.
Tumblr media
Courtesy to this shot, it seems he will leave Lux Aurea. And Aaravos tempts makes into serving him by offering them what they seek. Karim has drive, he seeks a brighter future for Lux Aurea despite the way his ways clash with Janai's. And to better his own fate, maybe he would have left/escaped after the generals apprehended him.
Kimdael could rarely be accepted on Janai's side as she is obviously with the trio or will be later anyway, and Rayla will not let Kimdael anywhere near her friends.
And because of my previous meta here, between a possible connection with Kimdael and Aaravos, in the sense that maybe he is the one who gave her the longevity, in giving her knowledge of dark magic that she uses for the ritual and that he has kept her alive for some cause. (ie given her the opportunity of immortality that she followed in herself unknowing of a greater role she has to play)
She is a tool to him. One of his chess pieces.
She will be useful to Aaravos after he is free or perhaps she has something to do with the freedom... but anyway, it makes more sense that she joins the Aaravos party, and later or before her, Karim gets bound in it too...
Also it could be that she met Karim first, before Aaravos is released, and they are the ones Amaya, Rayla and Callum are against here:
Tumblr media
Whatever happens now, Kimdael, by the collar, is bound in the narrative.

While reading through Bloodmoon Huntress I've discovered a nice twist on Runaan and Ethari's relationship.
Given their personalities, character archetypes and career choices you'd expect or assume certain things about how these two would interact and behave towards one another and others. But then we get these moments from Ethari
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Typically in these types of relationships with characters like Runaan and Ethari you'd expect Runaan the stoic, serious, grumpy and powerful assassin who loves fiercely, with his entire heart to be the one to be highly selective and specific with who he lets into his heart. Meanwhile you'd expect Ethari, the hard-working, creative, gentle, emotionally intelligent and patient craftsmen to have his heart open to the entire world.
However, as we see in the above panels the complete opposite is true. Runaan has the open heart while Ethari has the selective one.
Which is interesting as typically it is the character with the selective heart who is willing to kill, destroy and/or burn down the world if something terrible happens to one of the people that they love. And with Ethari being the character that loves this way it's going to be very interesting, intriguing, concerning and maybe even terrifying to see what he'll do, what lengths he'll be willing to go to and what lines he will cross to save his husband, best friends and daughter.

The one scene in Bloodmoon Huntress where Ethari and Runaan talk in the small hours of their day is, in my opinion, an excellent depiction of familarity, honesty, and support between spouses. I have a lot of emotions about it. And something about how Ethari answers all of Rayla's questions the next day -- probably while Runaan is trying to catch up on sleep in the other room -- tugs at my heart.

Breaking Tropes
Another one of my favourite moments in Bloodmoon Huntress is this moment between Runaan and Ethari:
Tumblr media
I love it because in these scenarios you almost always get an argument where the more powerful and experienced is too afraid to let their lover or spouse come with them to a battle or fight, no matter how determined or how personal this conflict is to the other person. Their spouse or lover usually has to argue and convince them to let them come and even if they do convince them their lover does so reluctantly and usually sets some sort of conditions or rules that the other must follow.
However in Bloodmoon Huntress Runaan is completely comfortable with Ethari coming with him, with the only thing he asks of him is to be ready to use his arrows. Ethari isn't as experienced with battles, especially life and death battles as Runaan is but Runaan has complete faith in him and his abilities. He values and trusts him, knows that they'll always be stronger together and that this fight is also Ethari's just as much as his.
It's just so refreshing and pleasing to see and I just wish that we could see more of this instead of the cliched "No you can't go it's too dangerous" argument.
And then we also get this moment:
Tumblr media
Where Rayla is also included in the fight to save the Skywing elves. Instead of leaving her behind they bring her along, giving her instructions but letting her help and be involved in an important and valuable way.
This was very important as Rayla, after feeling abandoned by her parents was allowed to fight and work as a team with her new family, showing her that they would be there for always and that they aren't going to leave her alone no matter what. It's also very important as they've also recognised and acknowledged her bravery and individual skills, showing Rayla just how much they know, depend on, love and value her, something that Rayla really needed in this moment afted her rough night and last few weeks since her parents left. They believe in her and trust her.
