Me and non-fiction books have an interesting relationship. While I really enjoy learning new things I often find history to a bit frustrating to read (especially in the area of race relations 🥴.) Although I have a hard time reading about the difficult times in African American history, I do realize how important it is to continue to tell our story. So when I saw this gem at the bookstore earlier this year, I had to pick it up. Four Hundred Souls covers the vast four-hundred-year journey of African Americans from 1619 to the present (2019). The editors, Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha N. Blain, assembled ninety writers, and each wrote about a five-year period of that four-hundred-year span. I can’t wait to read about all of the different life experiences, struggles and triumphs through the eyes of ninety authors. What was the last non-fiction book that you read? ☀️ I GOT A TEXT ☀️ For all my Love Island stans, no I don’t have a hot date on a beach in Spain, but, arguably even better, I’ve finally gotten the go ahead to book a vaccine appointment!! I’m so excited to finally have some peace of mind and to feel like I can more confidently enjoy the easing of our lockdown 😍 I have to say, I’m a little nervous - I’ve never NOT had a panic attack when getting a jab 💀 - but I’m lucky to have the opportunity and will be getting it done asap!! Has anyone else had the vaccine? Do you have any advice or encouragement?! Anything to calm my anxiety would be much appreciated 🙊 ☀️☀️☀️ In other news, today is apparently the last day of our mini-heatwave (hopefully it’ll start up again later next week!), so of course I had to take advantage of it and get some summer shots!! I used my @illumicrate copy of A Dark and Hollow Star by @paper.ashley and I seriously can’t wait to give this one a read!! @anaisthebibliophile’s recent post and love of the characters really got me hyped up to read it - and I know my girls never wrong - so it’s definitely near the top of my list!!! ☀️☀️☀️ QOTD: Have you read any LGBTQ books for #pridemonth this month? I’m so excited to read these two books this month 🥰. My only problem is deciding on which one I should start first 😁. To be honest I’m probably going to start The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin first. Caste is full of countless stories that just broke my heart. It has taken me two weeks to get through this one, but I’m so glad that I took my time. I had so many emotions while reading this book, and it was so hard for me to read the more descriptive instances of unimaginable cruelty. I recently picked up Black girl, call home by Jasmine Mann and I’ve been peeking in it on an off today ☺️. I needed a little brake from Caste, while it is an excellent book, it is HEAVY, it’s very upsetting (to say the least) to read about all of the atrocities afflicted against African Americans and people of color. I’ve seen Black girl, call home on a few of my favorite Ig pages so I decided to pick it up 🥰. It is a collection of poetry written by the author, who is black and queer. I’ve already read some of it and I’m definitely intrigued 💛. Chapter 10.... Okay y’all, not gonna lie, I wasn’t feeling this book 🤫😬(IkIk). I was feeling bad about not loving this book because I know how many people really enjoyed this one 😩. That was until chapter 10! I literally just finished the chapter like 20 minutes ago. I wanted to get more from Chloe’s story and chapter 10 delivered. I have a close family member that suffers with chronic pain so I definitely felt a connection with Chloe’s story in that aspect. For those of you who may not know Clockwork Angel is is book 1 of The Infernal Devices series written by Cassandra Clare. This series is a prequel to The Mortal Instruments series. I really want to read The Chain of Gold and Chain of Iron but I wanted to have some background information about the Shadow Hunter world before I started reading those giant books😁.
