g, regarding your recent ask about shesterkin’s goalie style, do you know/have any info on why different countries adopt certain different styles when it comes to goalkeeping? like what leads finnish goalies to trend towards being fast like snake and russian goalies to be strong and dependable like brick wall? i’m just interested to see if there’s history behind it or if it’s more just like “well the most elite goalie coach in russia right now happens to coach that style” or smth
I love thinking about this, yes!
A lot of it does have to do with the influence of particular coaches who run key programs or who train a star goalie that lots of people then want to copy. The hockey world isn’t that big; the goalie world is tiny.
As an example of that, modern goalie training might be really different if the airplane carrying the Soviet Wings hadn’t gone down in 1950. One of the men onboard was 23 year-old goalie Harijs Mellups. He was born in Latvia and had played hockey briefly outside the USSR, I believe in Czechoslovakia, which made him just about the only one who knew what hockey goaltending was. He was supposed to teach it to all the bandy and soccer players. After his death, the USSR teams had a reputation for being, understandably, weak in net for a long time. The resulting pressure for Soviet coaches to look outside the USSR for goaltending inspiration eventually lead to Tretiak, who was chosen because his gangly build was as similar as possible to a successful tall Czechoslovak goalie that Soviet coaches had been watching. (There was a lot of debate all around the hockey world over whether goalies should be small, which had been the fashion in the late 1800s and early 1900s, on the theory that if they were lighter they would be faster. There was a time when tall goalies were avant-garde.)
Tretiak also picked up equipment and equipment techniques from Finnish national team goalie Urpo Ylönen, who made his own goalie sticks with the blade set at angle that allowed him to rest it securely on the ice in all positions. (He gave him a signed stick, which Tretiak promptly played with). Later, Ylönen would become a goalie coach in Finland, while Tretiak coached in America and Canada. Obvsiously in addition to earlier North American star goalies who many people imitated, Tretiak has been pretty influential on American goalies.
Their actual movements were made up from both cultural and cross-training influences.
Finland actually made goalies such a priority that Ylönen became the goalie coaches’ coach. Finland knew they weren't competitors in international hockey in the '80s and '90s. They committed to funding a program to build more good coaches before they could build good goalies, and Ylönen’s very efficient style of movement just spread around the country. I believe I said something about "picking the puck" in the earlier answer--that's from him, and is now a Finnish signature, to stand very tall and keep the arms in relatively close before darting out very fast, like you said, rather than sweeping the arm out wider like Lundqvist or positioning it preemptively. I can't comment on whether that organization or efficiency is something Finns see as national character or culture, but just the fact that they set up such a program created a strong sense of unity and sport culture within their hockey.
The culture in the USSR and now in Russian sports has generally been to let young children play around longer than in North America. Creative thinking in playmaking is encouraged, including for young goalies, who watch or participate in just playing with the puck and seeing where it goes. One of the things Shestyorkin has been praised for and has been commented on by his teammates is his willingness to play the puck and pass it forward to them, which is why he's ended up with several assists. That's credited to just how much he watched plays. Meanwhile in North America, young kids are often encouraged to spend time as skaters before committing to the goalie position, and that might encourage them to skate further out of the net to play the puck or meet a skater and cut down their angles, like a Carey Price or a Braden Holtby (who didn't play goalie until he was twelve or thirteen). Both groups will involve themselves in the play and obviously can be very effective and fun to watch, Russians just mostly do this while still sticking close to the crease.
Cross-training consists of the other types of physical activities you do outside of your sport, which can work as conditioning but also often lead you to learn certain patterns of movement that you might then bring back to your sport. This is often influenced by culture or the social group around you, so there are some really interesting national trends!
Swedish goalies, including Eddie Lack, Anders Lindback, Henrik Lundqvist and others play lots of tennis, an idea that they all spread between themselves by inviting each other to play in the summers. (Note: tennis is one of the sports I am absolutely fascinated by but clueless about, but I gather it's very popular in Sweden to begin with, so it's easy to slot into summer training.) Besides his interest in dance, Tretiak ran a lot, as do many North American goalies today. Americans and Canadians are also very influenced by gym-based conditioning programs from strength and conditioning coaches like Maria Mountain. Young Russian goalies today do a lot of ballet and gymnastics.
Elena Segal, a former Soviet Bolshoi dancer who has worked in Russia and America with teams like the Anaheim Ducks, describes the value of Russian-style ballet training for goalies: "Vaganova ballet training focuses on the deep, small internal muscles.... Their role is to stabilize joints, align bones and muscles during movement, and when stationary, to produce force to the mobilizers and keep the entire body balanced, steady and in-control."
I admit--you'll all be shocked--that ballet would also be my cross-training method of choice for a young goalie, but there are other activities that work, and just might highlight different facets of movement. Maybe there's something taken from tennis in Lundqvist's great leaps and dives and reaches with the glove (at the same time, maybe he likes tennis because it fits with how he already likes to move. It's always a little bit of both.) But in terms of why Russian goalies seem strong and dependable, I'd say that's it's because they're comfortable with reading the play in order to position preemptively or participate without taking many risks, and they're also just well conditioned and move the way they want to move well!

“Jess?”
“Yes, Ms. Luthor?”
Squinting behind her glasses, the CEO peered at her schedule on her computer screen and furrowed as she read, but failed to comprehend the words under the seven o’clock time slot that seemed to take up majority of her evening. There should have been nothing there. She carefully kept track of every second, trusted her secretary to do the same, and suddenly, she had to be somewhere on a night when she could have been home.
Leaning back in her chair, Lena Luthor scrolled and clicked on the offending task highlighted in a deep forest green. National City FC.
National City Fire Council?
National City Financial Committee?
National City Freedom Conference?
“What the hell is National City FC, and why is it taking up 3 hours of my evening?”
“The team you had us buy a few months ago. It’s their home opener.” the secretary explained, filing a few things in the drawer in the closet in Lena’s office.
She didn’t bat an eye at such questions. It was her job to know those things, to take care of things, like when her boss came in with a circled article from her ride into the office, and told Jess to fix it. This somehow included a struggling council measure to bring another sports team to the city and help the underfunded women’s program develop.
There were no follow up questions to how it got done, as Lena was immediately onto the next thing, but for Jess, there were hours spent meeting with officials and the in-house entertainment division to see how accumulating a women’s soccer team would diversify their holdings. This meant weeks pouring over spreadsheets and crunching numbers until the small team that was created for just this singular task, that again, came from a circled three inches of newspaper print, developed a plan to make it a success.
“What did I do?” Lena asked, looking up from her computer as her assistant continued her work of pulling and rearranging to prepare for end of month reports.
“You gave me an article about how the city wanted a team but couldn’t drum up the money to commit, and they were going to lose the bid for an expansion team.”
“That sounds somewhat familiar.”
“You said that expansion and bringing professionals into the city was how we continued to grow.”
“I’m sure I did.”
Quickly, Lena googled the team and found a few headlines praising the companies initiative to help grown equality within the sport, to bring jobs and joy to the community, to expand programs for children and sports, to bring a championship to the city. It was all news to her but still made her smile.
“I put together a team who did everything from polling to scouting locations to permits and projections,” Jess explained as Lena scrolled. “You helped pick out the colors and design the logo.”
“I did?”
“No,” she chuckled. “I did all of that. It’s been my pet project. I played in college, you know.”
The webpage was green, deep and royal. A white logo with the crest of the city and an outline of a roaring bear over it sat in the corner. The banner had the team picture with rows of tough and smiling girls looking back. A schedule followed and links to tickets. It was an actual thing.
“You did all of this?”
“I delegated,” Jess explained, handing over a folder. “Take a look at this so you have your talking points.”
“This got past the board?”
“A bit of community outreach, your name on the field, the logo on the jerseys, community services, tax breaks, and city-wide gratitude. It went a long way, and was a sound investment, set to see returns as early as six years.”
“Are you sure you don’t want that promotion?”
“I’ll just take another raise,” the secretary smiled as her boss looked over the papers in the folder.
“This still doesn’t explain why it’s on my schedule though,” Lena decided, closing it and laying it back on her desk.
“It’s the inaugural game. You have to go show your support.”
“I don’t like sports,” she reminded her. “That’s why I created an entire division of this company to manage such things.”
“You wanted more photo ops, and I’m creating that moment for you.”
Jess was right, which was something Lena still wasn’t particularly fond of admitting. Ever since her brother’s implosion and her ascendence to help the company two years ago, it felt as if her full-time job wasn’t being a CEO but rather a figure head looking to make people believe that she was just as strong, just as capable, just as, if not moreso, credible as the leader of a multi-billion dollar organization.
Lena looked back at the file on her desk and sighed, invariably giving in.
“Fine, but I’m not going to wear a jer--”
Smiling, Jess held up her personal jersey with DANVERS printed in big white letters over the number eleven. She wiggled her eyebrows and tried to hide her amusement.
“It’s to support the team.”
“That’s not even my name.”
“You don’t play for them, just own the team. You don’t get your own name on it.”
“I couldn’t get a custom one? I don’t even know who that is.”
“This is your star player, Kara Danvers. Got her in the expansion draft. She’s amazing. Led the league in scoring the past three years, only been in it for four.”
“This is soccer, right?”
With a heavy sigh, Jess tossed the jersey across the desk.
“Keep reading. I’ll have the car here at six.”
Lena smiled to herself as she held up the jersey, happy to have her name on it anyway with the logo of the rebranded L Corp. She never got used to seeing that, her accomplishments come to fruition. Somehow she accidentally bought a sports team, and though she wasn’t thrilled about having to spend her evening not at home on the couch, she was excited to see what her assistant created, excited to have done something for the city she grew to call home.
Not the biggest sports fan on the planet, Lena looked back at the screen with the team on it and found number eleven and gulped slightly, deciding that sports couldn’t be that bad.
XXXXXXXXX
The music blasted in the headphones, so loudly that nothing else could be heard, not even a thundering heartbeat or heavy breathing. The world and its honks and horns and yelling and voices and city chatter completely disappeared to nothing outside of the stadium, outside of the pitch of fresh grass.
Before the first fan would be welcomed, before they thrust open the grates on the concession stands, before the lights were tested and left on, a single player began her routine, sitting in the stands alone and taking in the world around her, as soon it would be chaos-- screaming people on the sidelines, lines calling changes and plays in the heat of the moment, chirping from those coming to disrupt her home. The soccer player’s head nodded to the beat of the song as she prepared, washing the rest of it away and focusing, centering herself.
The stadium was beginning to breathe again, with works appearing, setting up for the sell-out crowd. By the time the first few teammates began to filter out to warm up, Kara was warming up, making her way from side to side with a light jog, stretching muscles and coming back from her solitary centering.
“Are you getting nervous yet?” Nia asked as she sat on the ground, working hamstrings into something more tenable.
“I’m getting excited,” Kara corrected.
She was a leader on the team, and she took the responsibility very seriously. That included measuring her responses for the younger teammates, making sure that she was always on. It also meant that she played her heart out and left every ounce of energy on the field. She was going to lead the league again. She was going to keep her national team spot. She was going to accomplish great things, just as her parents always told her.
“I’m getting nervous,” her teammate confessed. “Sarah Lance is a terrifying defender. And Foster is a sniper.”
“But you’re Nia Nal,” Kara smiled, helping to pull her goaltender up. She didn’t let her escape though. She held her shoulders in her hands and gave her an intense look. “You are a brick wall. You are unstoppable. You are a fortress. That’s your goal, and no one is going to score today.”
“I know.”
“I don’t think you do,” the captain disagreed, grinning a little wider now. “Hey, Allen, tell Nal what she is.”
From over her shoulder another teammate immediately chimed in.
“Nia Nal is a force to be reckoned with! She’s not allowing one point this entire year.”
“See that?” Kara grinned, turning back to her goalie. “Everyone already knows it.”
“I know,” Nia nodded, a little less worried and a little more serious.
“Good. Let’s run some drills. I’m no Foster, but I’ll try to make it hard for you.”
Leadership was a role Kara felt both thrust upon her and eager taken up, as if it were second nature. She didn’t think about it, not directly, but often her time was spent planning her moves within the team to make them successful. It showed on the field.
On the pitch though, Kara was completely untouchable. She was focused on her goals and she was ready for anything. She was the captain, the heart, the everything for her team, and she gave her all because for so long it was all she had.
“Danvers, lets go,” the coach’s voice called as the player finished getting ready, completing the final tasks of her routine. “I need you for some press stuff.”
“I thought that was after,” Kara furrowed as she trotted over to Cat Grant as the rest of the team finished up in the locker room.
“Opening day means a lot of parading around,” she explained as they walked through the corridor. “You know this team is precarious at best. We have to do everything we can to appease the money bags.”
“I was going to do some appeasing on the scoreboard. Try to put on a show.”
“If you could do both, I’d appreciate it.”
“You know I can.”
With a comparable grin, Cat nodded and tugged open a door that led to a lobby area, where post game interviews would be held, where the team would meet before the huddle, only this time it was nearly empty save for two women.
“Ms. Luthor,” Cat held out her hand as she approached the striking woman that Kara was stuck staring at. “It’s an honor to have you out here to see our first game.”
“I’ve heard you’ve done amazing things. I’m excited to watch,” she smiled back, clasping Grant’s hand with both of hers.
Dimples were there, right on her cheeks. There was also red lipstick. Cherry red and full on the lips. And her eyes. The green of the jersey was absolutely perfect for making her eyes seem like never-ending forests. Kara cleared her throat when she remembered to swallow and looked away from her face quickly, afraid of gawking too long, though her own cheeks grew a bit warm with the observations. The problem was that looking anywhere else was just as bad. Skin-tight black jeans betrayed hips, and the jersey was enough to not hide her chest, and Kara wanted to pluck out her own eyeballs.
While she introduced her assistant, Kara looked helplessly at the door and shifted on her feet, hoping to avoid the weird feeling in her chest and head.
“This is one of our stars, Kara Danvers. She’ll be doing some press with you after the game, so I thought it’d be better to look as if you’ve met before.”
“Good thinking,” Lena smiled and held out her hand. “It’s a pleasure.”
“It’s very nice to meet you,” Kara nodded, curt and polite enough, the handshake not lasting very long.
“I will confess I don’t know much about soccer, but I’ve done my research on you,” the money explained. “Jess was telling me how brilliant you are, and I’m excited for you to share your talent with the city.”
“Me? Yes, um. I am as well. Excited. I love this city. My second home it is.”
With a funny look on her face, Lena just nodded and turned back to the coach, her glance following a beat later as Kara looked away, her cheeks full firetrucks.
“I wont interrupt anymore of your prep time,” Lena explained. “Thank you Cat.”
“Enjoy the view from the owner’s box.”
“I get one of those?” Lena asked, her voice going a little low as she asked her assistant.
Kara lingered for a moment as her coach made her way back toward the lock eroom to prepare. She met Lena’s lok and offered another shy smile before hurring to turn around.
“See you later,” she offered and cringed as she turned around.
The entire walk back to the locker room, Kara hung her head, oddly confused about the very short but very weird meeting. She didn’t know what to do or what she had done, just that she had a game to win and now knew that Lena Luthor existed.
XXXXXXXXXXX
“Good evening National City!” the CEO cheered from the edge of the pitch, a giant television of herself played just behind her for everyone to see in the sold out crowd.
The sun was beginning to set behind the city, the stadium sitting on the edge of the water with a view of the skyline and the lake behind it. It was all so new and clean and nice, that Lena took a little bit of pride in the fact hat she had some hand to play in it all even if she wan’t acutely aware of it.
“I am so happy to introduce you to your National City FC!”
The crowd roared again as she smiled into the microphone and surveyed the edge of the field with the waiting players and their tiny equivalents.
“It has been an honor to be part of bringing the next great franchise to our wonderful city, and I know these women are going to make you all so proud!”
The cheering was awfully addicting, and Lena was going to try to figure out how to get twenty thousand people to follow her around and agree with everything she said.
“What do you say we get this inaugural season underway?”
Lena smiled and waved, handing over the microphone to the emcee. The deep voice began to introduce the team as the owner walked off of the field toward her assistant who smiled, much too knowledgeable about the fact that her boss was actually having fun despite her inability to admit it.
“You looked good out there,” Jess nodded as Lena stood beside her, shielding her eyes from the squint of the sun as she looked at her team.
“Sports aren’t that bad,” Lena shrugged.
Despite herself, the CEO found Kara Danvers in the lineup, a little girl standing before her as they did the anthem and introductions. Even though everyone was quiet and preparing for the game, the little girl was antsy. Kara held her hands and lifted her up slightly, swinging her a bit, her shoulders and biceps straining. Lena swallowed as she watched Kara giggle with the little girl, and wondered how someone could exist that was insanely hot and also a big old goober. It didn’t seem fair.
“Let’s get to the box,” Jess offered, interrupting the absolute dehydration Lena was experiencing and hoping to hide. “We can go over some of the basics and I can finish explaining the strategy.”
“I trust your judgement, but I should learn a few things for press. This is going to take a lot more of my face than previous expected, I guess?”
“I was hoping a few showings of your face, and if we win, we’ll solidify the team. National City is lacking a prestigious championship caliber team.”
On the field, Kara hopped slightly before stretching out her legs and getting out the jitters. Hair pulled back tightly, her armband meant she was the captain, and she commanded her team with precision.
“Is this our first championship team?”
“I think so.”
“This is a much more enjoyable investment than all those property deals and some of those research labs I have to hear about.”
“Says the engineer?”
“It pains me to admit it.”
The whistle blew and Kara sprinted out, capturing the ball and immediately making her way toward the other goal. Lena’s heart jumped into her throat at the sheer force and speed of it all before she allowed Jess to tug her back to her box.
“How much do you know about Kara Danvers?” Lena asked, hoping it as subtle enough to be taken as small talk.
“It’s all in the folders.”
The CEO nodded as the elevator ascended, and she didn’t dare to chance a look at her secretary.
XXXXXXXXXX
No matter how many times she played, the adrenaline from a game was still mildly addicting. No matter how many goals she scored, the elation of scoring another was a fix that Kara Danvers chased perpetually. Nothing compared to it.
After the final whistle blew though, after the game ended and there was nothing left to give, she found herself full of these things, and no matter how tired her muscles and body became, the high was slow to come down from. It did make everything happen quicker though, and somehow, not long after winning, and a hat trick under her belt, Kara found herself seated in the media room with the team logo behind her and her new owner beside her.
“You must be fairly happy with the game tonight,” one reporter began, “any worries about the team as a whole that you will be working on this week at practice?”
“We’re always looking to be better, and I can’t say we were flawless, but I’m so excited for where we’re at as a team, that I’m just going to bask for the evening before we get back to work in the morning.”
The group chuckled slightly as the PR director called on the next hand.
“Ms. Luthor, how important was it for this team to get a win tonight? Was it validation for your involvement? Vindication maybe for all the naysayers who were against the expansion?”
“I can honestly say I haven’t paid any attention to anyone who was against this project,” Lena smiled as she earned a laugh from the audience. “It’s important to win as many games as possible for any team, let alone this team. We have a lot to prove as the new kids on the block, but I think Ms. Danvers is right, and we should celebrate and come back ready to continue in the morning.”
For the life of her, Kara wasn’t sure why the mention of her name or the corresponding look from Lena made the tips of her ears burn, but she smiled awkwardly and tried to ignore it.
“Ms. Luthor, what made you invest in this team and this  opportunity?”
“The excitement in my advisor’s face when she talked about the team,” the CEO explained, nodding to the woman Kara didn’t remember officially meeting. “I can’t take credit for doing much more except being completely taken with Kara.”
The player snapped to look at the CEO for the pause that seemed to last much too long.
“Wait,” Lena shook her head and laughed. “Kara and her team. The sport really. The little girls that come out with the team. My advisor was one of those little girls, and she is now one of the most admirable and driven people I have ever met. If a team like this can give her joy and hope, imagine what it can do for all of the other little girls.”
“How does it feel to have the most powerful woman in the world behind you, Kara?”
“I’m quite taken by it,” she offered humbly with a smile, earning a laugh from the group and Lena in particular. “To be honest though, it is a truly empowering fact. To have someone with such kindness and tenacity as an example, it’s amazing.”
The pair shared a smile, and Kara looked back at the crowd, preparing for the next question.

Why You Should Support The Flyers
I realize very few people that actually follow me are going to care about this since I mostly follow/follow me are Pens fans, but I *have* to gush about the Flyers for a bit. I know everyone is upset about the Pens losing streak and I am too, but my truefax team of my heart is on a winning streak. We have legitimately turned into a team that may get the second wild card spot and bounced in the first round into a team contending for the top spot in the Metro. Due to the current win streak the Flyers currently have the highest percentage *to win the Cup* per money rush. We are in the same spot St. Louis was last year.
I am legit not getting too excited over that at this point because I don’t think we’re going to catch the Capitals for #1 in the Metro. If you look at the current projections, it looks like Flyers/Pens are the most likely match up for the first round at the point with the two teams being at a near match on who gets 4 and 5 behind Washington, Boston, and Tampa. If that’s the match up, it’s going to be a hell of a good series like usual and I understand that Pens fans will hate the Flyers the whole time. Because they’re the Flyers. But I want to convince you to support them if they beat the Pens. Or if the match up isn’t Flyers/Pens.
So the team is legit good at this point. We’re rolling four lines of offense, three lines of defense, and have a very good goalie. Hart is a brick wall at home and turning things around on the road. The whole goal this year has been to get into the playoffs and get the kids some playoff experience. Get Hart feeling what playoffs are like so he knows and then really go for it next year. But the fact is we might actually go somewhere *this year*.
Our first line of Voracek-Coots-Giroux is literally one of the best lines in the league right now. Teams cannot score when they are on the ice and Coots is just so, so good right now. Provy and Niskanen have firmed up the 1st pairing and both of them can just EAT minutes like no ones business. And the crazy thing is that Voracek wasn’t supposed to be on that line. That’s where Oskar Lindblom is supposed to be. And when he was there, the line was even *better*. He and Coots together were putting together a goals against average that was insanely low. Like O’Conner would rerun the stats because they were so low.
Bringing in Grant has moved Laughts to the second line where he’s a winger with TK and Hayes so it’s like the disaster human line and it’s brilliant. They’re just creating chances left and right and scoring and doing amazing things. All three of them have like one brain cell and it’s shared between them and all they think about is hockey. Sanheim and Myers are turning into a crazy good pair. Even when Braun is shifted with one of those two it’s looking great. Farabee was on this line and when playoffs start he’ll be back up. Hell, he might be back up sooner if Thompson (more on him later) doesn’t pan out.
Line 3 is centered by Grant now and he’s turned it on the last two games finding good chemistry with JVR and NAK. JVR is turning into an assist machine and NAK is scoring again. Both of them are scoring. NAK and Pitlick sometimes switch spots between 3rd and 4th line depending on the game, but both of them are good on each line. NAK was not the rookie that was supposed to be shining this year, but he has really cemented his place and when players were sent down at the trade deadline, he stayed. He’s been really good. And keep in mind, 3C was never supposed to be in question. This is Patrick’s spot. And there’s still a slight chance he could come back this year. Hagg and Braun are consistent and while Hagg tends to drag down a lot of the underlying stats of players, he’s actually been pretty good. Underlying stats aren’t everything. He passes the eye test and has even been scoring.
So the fourth line is taking hard minutes and turning them into good chances. Considering a couple of years ago, Raffl was on our 1st line because that’s just what we had in our system, wow. He’s a great 3/4 depth player but honestly, there’s a decent chance he might not even be in the lineup come playoffs. However Thompson hasn’t exactly been lighting it up and Raffl can play winger as well as center so they can pull up Frost who is a creative center for the 4th line and have him center some combo of Raffl/Pitlick/NAK/Farabee. Which god, that is a good problem to have.
The power play and penalty kill are clicking, the coach knows what buttons to push, all the players have bought into the system, they’re playing fast, hard, and most of the time they’re playing smart. Other than the fact they still have slow starts, though not as bad as they used to be. They usually get it righted within the 1st period instead of taking into the 2nd period to get it righted. It’s just *so* nice to have meaningful hockey in town again. Even the years we would limp into the playoffs, it was obvious how far apart the Flyers were compared to the other teams. This year, it’s not that way. I’m not putting them up with say the Bruins - though they’ve beaten them - or Tampa - they’ve beaten them too. But they’re coming in hot and playing well and for the most part - knock really HARD on wood - healthy. Ghost is on his way back which means our scratch defenseman could be a guy who was up for the Calder a few years ago.
So like, I get it. You hate the Flyers. Everyone does. But they’re not the same Flyers of old. This team is really likeable. They’re not a dirty team. They’re all good, fun guys. They play a fun brand of hockey. Their games are fun to watch. There’s scoring and defense and crazy good goaltending.
So you know, don’t shit on them if they happen to catch fire and move on. Jump on the Flyers bandwagon while they try to lift the Cup for Oskar.

a few days ago you asked about goaltending styles and i was debating whether or not to send something in because i'm pretty sure you know all my teams' goalies but yolo? so, doing this kinda "The Dating Game" style, goalie #1 somehow simultaneously looks like a rugged GQ model and a guy who lives in a van down by the river and exclusively wears hemp sweaters. he's also a daring lad who likes taking long lateral strides around the crease. goalie #2 is a (very) tall (and very skinny) glass (1/3)
of (very white) milk, who employs a patient hybrid-style of goaltending while tracking opponents with his slightly unnerving doe-eyes. he also maintains remarkable composure in net considering his last team ripped out his soul (but at least he got a cup ring as a thank you present?). goalie #3 … wait, goalie #3 is a cursed-looking amulet? that can’t be right… but it is! goalies for our third team come and go, but one thing remains – a pesky little goalie curse! their current starting (2/3)
goaltender is injured, in 2011, the team signed a goalie for what is now considered one of the worst contracts in nhl history, and the future of the franchise rests in the glove of a 19 year old in the WHL (the poor dude). and now we’ve got an okay guy coming in from detroit to wear the amulet and be goalie #3. may god be with him. (and if you guessed holtbeast, jonesy, and flyers’ goalie curse/brian elliott/ilya bryzgalov/carter hart/petr mrazek, you’re correct). (3/3)
also i totally just spammed the hell outta you but i love hockey analysis and if you wanted an actual description of goaltending styles for specific players in the league literally i’d blab about it to you in a heartbeat
WHOOPS ACCIDENTALLY PUSHED POST INSTEAD OF THE TEXT ENTRY BOX.
very apt descriptions! i feel like goalie number two is the goalie for me! lol.
the flyer’s goalie situation is so very unfortunate while simultaneously being so very interesting and i hope they can recover and maybe one of their guys can break the curse! (baby carter hart, he of crazy goalie superstitions, i wish you luck!)
but honestly, feel free to message me whenever? i love hockey analysis and talk outside of just the usual fandom shit!
the question was brought up when i was watching the leafs and they were comparing curtis mcelhinney’s style to current and former leafs goalies and made me realise there are two main styles of goaltenders: flailers and brick walls. neither guarantees success, but both are pretty interesting to watch

couldn't coaches switch goalies halfway through the game? wouldn't it be an advantage to have a fresh goalie in net against a goalie thats been playing the whole game? it would only affect stats and shit
Nope! because that’s not really how goalies work. Goalies don’t usually get a physical drain from playing in a game, it’s all mental. So pulling your goalie for no reason can have a negative impact on how that goalie will continue to play out. There’s also the idea that goalies need to be warmed up so instead of having a “fresh” goalie against a “tired” goalie you’re going to have a “cold” goalie with no feel for the game against a “warm” goalie that knows how the game is going to be played. Goalies need to be learn to track the puck and how the other team is moving it and then who they should be focusing on. They need to read their players and how their team is playing versus the other team. So what you’d really have is a player who has no experience in this game coming in part way through. And since they already pull the goalie when they’re not doing well if we just changed goalies when they were doing well you have a goalie that’s thriving in this game situation and you’d be putting in a goalie that didn’t know what was going on because he wasn’t feeling it.
Not only that, you’d be showing no trust in your goaltender, so that would negatively impact his confidence and being a goalie is 90% between the ears and so poor confidence can ruin his game, season, even career. Not only that but your goalie would be pissed to not be playing the whole game and would probably not play his best just because he has no loyalty to you or the team and would probably want to get out of there immediately. ALSO you’re going on the assumption that back up goaltenders are just as good as starting goaltenders and what we’ve seen is that it is very difficult to get a backup that is as good as your starter, because good back ups are very different from good starters. A back up has to stay involved in games when they’ll only be playing 10-30 a year versus the 50 the starter will play. like i said before knowing the way the game is played and getting into the rhythm is so much more important for a goalie so a backup isn’t necessarily a brick wall every night but they’re consistent given the lack of consistency in their career. So to have two goalies that can play like brick walls every night is almost impossible unless you develop a starter through the back up position which is what the penguins did with murray and is not that easy. a lot of starting goaltenders are developed as starters in the AHL because again, for goalies it’s about playing a lot.
So i think the really crux of this is that, goaltenders benefit from playing as much as possible when they’re doing well. That’s why goaltenders don’t get changed out at all in the playoffs. You want to rest them during the regular season because it’s a very dense schedule and they could hit ruts. But a goaltender who’s successful, there’s no reason to pull him because that will just negatively impact his play. For instance if you look at the best goaltenders last year, you’ll see names like Schneider and Talbot. Schenider played 60 games and Talbot played 73 games. Both of them had amazing seasons and for Talbot that continued into the post season, and neither of them seemed fatigued. Because like i said, goaltenders do not experience physical fatigue in the way that players at other positions do.
I hope that answered your question! it was a fun one for me to answer

CANTLON: WOLF PACK LOOK TO BREAK LOSING STREAK IN SPRINGFIELD
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The Hartford Wolf Pack will have three cracks at ending their losing streak this weekend. Just one will do in Springfield Friday night in their fifth consecutive road game. The hope is to start a winning streak at the XL Center on the back end of a hockey doubleheader against the Binghamton Devils at 7:30 PM. On Sunday the Pack gets on the bus to travel to Providence for a 3 PM puck drop against the Baby Bruins. “Things could be different. We went to overtime (the last two) games. However, they're still two losses. Our powerplay had some scoring chances. It helped us against Hershey, but still isn’t performing as we would like. Maybe we won some games early in the season we shouldn’t have, and now we're losing games we deserve to win,” team captain, Steven Fogarty, stated. “We're still in the games," Fogarty added. "We're not getting blown out. I thought we played really well the first two periods against Lehigh Valley, but they took it to us in the third, but we were there in overtime. "In Hershey, it was a weird game. Special teams, lots of teddy bears, (Hershey had their Teddy Bear toss). I don’t want to make excuses. We're not gonna win every game. No team has ever done that,” Fogarty said with a laugh and a wry smile. "If we stick to the small things will get back to where we were.” There will be some lineup changes for the weekend. Defenseman Sean Day was reassigned to the team's ECHL affiliates, the Maine Mariners. Yegor Rykov (pronounced Ree-kov) will make his regular season debut after missing the first two months of the season while recovering from a high ankle sprain suffered in the Traverse City prospects camp in early September. He was given full medical clearance last week and was formally reassigned Wednesday to Hartford where he has been skating for the past month. “We have an excess of defenseman now with Yegor coming back to play this weekend, and Jeff Taylor is playing great. He a very valued prospect. He was originally scheduled to be here for the opening day roster, but unfortunately, the injury pushed him back. There were discussions about (where he would go), but it was felt best that this is where he should be,” Pack head coach Kris Knoblauch said of the Russian rookie rearguard. Taylor was signed in the off-season from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins roster. He has been scratched more than he has played. He did well enough last weekend that the New York Rangers/Wolf Pack elected to keep him and to send Day back to Maine for a second time in his brief pro career. “The way (Taylor) is playing, there is no way we're going to send him back. Sean is a good defenseman. He’ll be back. He was helpful when he was here, and we want to make sure he gets his minutes (in Maine),” Knoblauch said flatly. Upfront, Tim Gettinger, who missed both of last weekend’s game with a lower-body injury, will be back, as will Lewis Zerter-Gossage (upper body). “I think five-on-five we need to generate more offense, and in those games, that’s where you need your power play to come through for you, and lately it hasn’t come through as often as we'd like. "Our last game, (in Hershey), we were terrible five-on-five, but there, our powerplay did give us an opportunity with two power play goals and that makes a huge difference and special teams are very important,” Knoblauch said in speaking of his 27th ranked power play which is operating at a flaccid 11.0%. In net, Igor Shesterkin is slated to start the game Friday with Adam Huska going Saturday against Binghamton. Knoblauch has no qualms about the play he's receiving in the 4x6 cage. “Our goaltending has been outstanding and has been very good. It looks bad right now, but that is a reflection of how we have been playing in front of them. We are defending more than we should be, that’s because we're not making the simple passes. We're trying the longer ones, which are more low percentage, and we give away possession (of the puck), so we're back more in our zone and that leads to breakdowns and scoring chances.” Fogarty thinks there could be something to their recent play relying on their two brick walls in net a little too much. “Maybe subconsciously we might be doing that a bit, but we're trying to cheat and maybe make plays we shouldn’t have. They're still making those saves for us and it certaintly is not in our game plan." The main game plan is to win in regulation and start a new winning streak. NOTES: Late note... Shesterkin could be recalled in the morning depending on the condition of Henrik Lundqvist who took ill before the Columbus game a 3-2 Rangers win. The emergency goalie was in the house, but Alexander Georgiev went between the pipes and was spectacular making 45 saves. Cayden Primeau, the son of former Hartford Whaler, Keith Primeau, made his NHL debut in Montreal and was on the short lost a 3-2 decision to Colorado. The Thunderbirds gave up 63 shots on goal in regulation at home on Wednesday night to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. They recalled defenseman Dylan MacPherson from the Greenville Swamp Rabbits (ECHL). Former Wolf Pack goalie, Chris Nell, is now on his third ECHL team in the first two months of the season. He was traded from the Adirondack Thunder to the Florida Everblades. Ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger, Jared Gomes, leaves the Brampton Beast (ECHL) to head to EC Bad Nauheim (Germany DEL-2). Kristoff Kontos, the son of ex-New Haven Nighthawk and Ranger, Chris Kontos, signs a deal for the rest of the year with Vimmerby HC (Sweden Division-1). The World Junior Championship tourney comes up in three weeks with rosters starting to get filled in with names. Canada has one local name. Peter Diliberatore from Quinnipiac University (ECACHL). The team's goalie coach is Pack all-time great, Jason LaBarbera. Sweden has announced the names of two Rangers prospects on the initial roster. They are defenseman Nils Lundqvist, and center Karl Henriksson. Read the full article

/r/hockey NHL Power Rankings Week 26 Knightfall Edition
/r/Hockey NHL Power Rankings Week Mar 25, 2019 - Mar 31, 2019Thank YouThank you to all of the volunteers doing the power rankings. Each ranker has their own system and have their own reasonings and analyis. It truly is a lot of work.RankersSpoilerOrganizersSpoilerVisualizationThe visualization contains historical data, so you can see how your team has done over time. Hopefully, we can run this for many years in hopes that we can see the rise and fall of teams by /r/hockey opinion. It automatically updates so feel free to bookmark. You can find it hereProcessHow does this work? Throughout the course of the week rankers are able to access an app that will allow them to rank teams. At the end of the period we calculate the average ranking for every team and collate all of the analysis provided by rankers. The app then generates a post that is first proofread and then posted to /r/hockey!Rankings (26/31 Rankers Reporting)Ranking (avg)TeamDeltaOverall RecordRecord This WeekComments1 (1.08)Tampa Bay Lightning-59-15-41-1-0Tampa doesn’t play well after a long break. That has been established quite well this season. There isn’t much more I can say about the Bolts that hasn’t been said I’m going to focus on some baby Bolts. Carter Verhaeghe leads the AHL in points with 75 (30 G 45A), Alex Barre-Boulet is second in rookie scoring with 60 ponts (32 G 28 A), Cal Foote also a rookie has 29 points ( 9 G 20A +16) as a defenseman, Alexander Volkov continues to show strong two way play in his second season (20 G 20A). Taylor Raddsyh is 8th in rookie scoring (17G 26A), Boris Katchouck is still trying to find his footing, Mitchell Stephens who almost made the team out of camp but had an unfortunate injury has played well since his return. Suffice it say there are a lot of good young players developing in Syracuse.2 (3.56)Boston Bruins147-23-91-3-0Oof. It seems neither Toronto nor Boston want home ice advantage in the first round. Both teams are losing to lottery contenders. At least 🍝 got a hattrick against the Rangers and Backes got his 7th goal of the season; passing James Neal.3 (3.88)Calgary Flames-149-23-72-2-0And that is how the West was clinched.4 (4.28)Washington Capitals247-24-83-0-0Starting this week I'm ranking teams based on who I think will win the cup, biases included - Caps are second. We absolutely took it to the Bolts last night, with each member of our old top line scoring twice, dominating them as much as you can dominate that team. I'm fully torqued entering the 'loffs, literally counting down the days like it's christmas. Both Carolina and cum bus scare me, but the post-TDL Caps can beat anybody. Russian machine never breaks babes.5 (7.32)New York Islanders246-26-72-1-0Clinched? Fucking Right! Isles had the chance to clinch on Tuesday night versus CBJ but played awful and lost badly. Thursday they constantly played down 2, chasing the Jets. They were down for about 58 minutes throughout the game, but scored 2 goals with less than 90 seconds to go to tie, and steal the win in Manitoba. They kept momentum from there to dominate Buffalo and clinch a playoff spot before April for the first time in almost 30 years. Lehner looks like a wall in net and is maybe the most loved Islander right now. Eberle has a hot hand scoring lots of goals after a long dry spell, Barzal is finally seeing results for his hard work, and other guys like Bailey are chipping in after a long cold streak. This team looks to be heating up again at the perfect time, looking like they will finish as the #2 in the Metro with home ice advantage for the first time in a long long time. If things play out well they could be playing Washington for the division title on the last day of their season.6 (8.12)San Jose Sharks-144-26-91-3-07 (8.44)Nashville Predators444-29-62-1-0Ignoring the result of the CBJ game (Saros is apparently no Michael Jordan when it comes to flu games), it's been a pretty okay week to be a Preds fan. Fabbro signed on so fears of another Vesey situation were finally put to ease. He even made his debut, not an earth shattering one mind you but it was solid nonetheless. That does burn the first year of his ELC which will expose him in the Seattle expansion, but current speculation is that was a term to him actually signing. In other player news, Arvidsson has tied the Preds single season goal record with only 55 GP. Watson completed his AHL conditioning stint, and it will be interesting to see how he gets slotted into the roster. Turris is... yeah. The Central is up for grabs, with any combination of NSH, STL, or WPG in the top 3 a distinct possibility. The Preds final three games are @ BUF, v VAN, v CHI, games that they should be able to win and go into the playoffs at least lukewarm and potentially with home ice advantage. Key word there being 'should'.8 (8.72)Winnipeg Jets-445-29-40-3-09 (9.52)Toronto Maple Leafs-145-26-71-1-1A tale of two teams in the month of March...Team A was missing two of their Top 4D for basically the entire month of March. Collected 16 of 30 points. Posted a CF% of 44.9%, a xGF% of 44.3%, and a PDO of 103.51...Team B was also missing two of their Top 4D for the entire month of March. Collected 15 of 28 points. Posted a CF% of 54.4%, a xGF% of 55%, and a PDO of 98.7...Guess which of these teams is expected to become a Conference Finalist and which is expected to be bounced quickly in Round 1? TOR is Team B but there's been a lot of "they don't look good" punditry over the Leafs' recent play despite the reality that they've been downright dominant (5th in CF%, 5th in xGF%). Unfortunately, their goaltending fell apart to the tune of a .892 Team SV% in March. It's the kind of thing that can sink ANY team in the NHL, no matter how well the rest of the group is playing. The good news is Freddy and the Buds have one final week to tighten up. Otherwise it will truly be Bruins in 5.10 (10.08)Carolina Hurricanes-43-29-71-3-0The Canes are still finding a way to stay in the thick of it with every game being a must win game. Losses have come from one bad period of hockey against some of the top teams in the league, namely Tampa and Washington. The month of December is haunting the team, 2 points from one of those terrible games would have gone far this month. Previous week went 3 - 2, beating the Wild cleanly, Montreal in OT, and Flyers was alot closer of a game than the scoresheet would show. Washington beat the team for the two losses of the week, both in the third period. The hope here in Canes Country is that those 4 points don't haunt us too. Mrazek is emerging more and more as our #1, but expect the shuffle to keep happening till playoffs come (if and when) Svechnikov has grown into the scoring talent that was promised with the second overall pick (and top forward in the draft) Hamilton continues to show why he is the best defenceman from his draft year with two goals, and continues his streak of games wi11 (10.4)Columbus Blue Jackets345-30-44-0-0What a time to get hot. This Jackets team that we are watching right now is what we expected to see after the TDL. Every line has been playing great as we seem to have finally stumbled on the right combinations. Bob is literally a brick wall and our offence has been just as good. Over the last 5 games the Jackets have outscored their opponents 24-4. This final week is going to be exciting, and we could land anywhere from 3rd in the metro to 9th in the East.12 (10.52)Pittsburgh Penguins-43-25-112-1-0I don't have much to say this week except who'd have thought in December we might finish with more points than the Leafs? We're one game from extending the longest active playoff streak in the NHL. It's been a good season all things considered.13 (11.44)St. Louis Blues-42-28-82-1-0The Blues finally clinched the playoffs this week, and if you told me 3 months ago that we'd be fighting for the division I'd have said "yeah and 25 year old goalies can debut after 6 years in professional hockey and contend for the Calder." Memes do come true i guess14 (12)Vegas Golden Knights-542-30-70-3-1Even the Stone age is not invulnerable to having average goaltending.15 (13.72)Dallas Stars141-31-73-0-1I put the Stars at 8 this week because we earned 7/8 points and we look like the Western team to beat heading into the playoffs. My major concern is that we win too much and end up in a worse matchup against Nashville.16 (14)Montreal Canadiens-142-29-82-1-017 (17.52)Arizona Coyotes-38-33-82-0-1That game against the Avalanche could be the final dagger in this season but as we have been doing we keep clawing our way back. Just need some help.18 (18.08)Colorado Avalanche136-29-132-0-02 Big wins this week! We beat back the two desert teams, to establish our selves in the second wild card. Its not over yet, but we have control of our own destiny. The Captain is back just in time for or final push. On the bad side Rantanen's injury might be a bit more severe than first reported, but he should be back for the playoffs. One final push this week we need at least two wins, three guarantees it. Also Cale Makar is Hype and Avs prospects are showing well in the NCAA tourney.19 (19.68)Minnesota Wild136-34-91-2-0And so closes the window on the Minnesota Wild.20 (20.44)Philadelphia Flyers-237-34-81-2-0Fade us fam. Hail Gritty. Praise be unto Wawa. And screw William Hill commercials.21 (21.52)Florida Panthers-35-32-122-2-0Roberto has turned back the clock again. We still don’t know if this is his final season but if it is lets give him a sendoff that he deserves.22 (21.92)Chicago Blackhawks-34-33-111-1-1The Blackhawks' PP went 3 for 32 in March (29th in NHL), the PK allowed 10 goals in 32 opportunities (also, 29th). Excluding empty net goals, 5 of the Blackhawks' 7 losses this month were by 1 goal. They'd likely be in a much different position playoff-wise if they'd gotten some help from their special teams. DeBrincat (5G, 5A in March) has caught up to Kane (1G, 10A) for the team's lead in goals at 41. DeBrincat is the second-youngest Hawk to hit the 40-goal mark (after JR). That also makes him and Kane the second pair of American-born 40-goal scorers on a team (after Mullen & Stevens, 91-92 Penguins), and the first pair of Hawks since the 90-91 season (Roenick & Larmer). Gustafsson (5G, 4A) scored his 17th goal of the season, the most by a Hawks dman since Byfuglien in 09-10 (also 17). Caggiula returned from a concussion on Sat, while Kampf left with a facial/dental injury. When healthy, Kampf has been one of the best defensive forwards in the league. Sikura still awaits his first NHL goal.23 (23.36)Vancouver Canucks134-35-102-1-0The future is here, sort of. It's here like the era of the electric car is here - there's plenty of flashy things to get excited about, but there's still many, many hurdles to overcome. The arrival of Quinn Hughes allows this season to end on a warm note and leaves many hopeful that the Canucks might secure one of those "young team overperforming" playoff berths next year. It was also pretty awesome to see Edler crack the all-time goalscoring record for a defenceman. Otherwise, the lack of regulation wins prevents this team from moving much either way in the power rankings.24 (23.92)Edmonton Oilers-134-35-91-1-125 (25)Anaheim Ducks-133-37-102-1-0Rakell must not think we are out of the playoff race. He had a natural hat trick against the oilers. Ducks keep on slipping slipping slipping up the standings and out of the jack Hughes race. Best part of the week: Jake Dotchin has to exit the game yesterday because he was technically scratched while playing for an injured player26 (26.52)New York Rangers131-34-132-2-0Georgiev is starting to show why he is the heir apparent to the throne.27 (26.6)Detroit Red Wings231-38-104-0-028 (27.48)Buffalo Sabres-231-38-100-4-1I'm willing to give goaltending a pass for now, given how god-awful our defense has been. This week we lost to not one, not two, but THREE of the four teams below us in the standings. In March we have 2 wins, and neither came in regulation. If you look back further, we have 3 total wins in our last 21 games played, and as I write we are down 0-3 to Columbus. In that stretch we have been out-scored 45-84. If that isn't depressing enough for you, just remember that we were first place in the league at one point this season. Where are we now? Oh yeah, bottom five. Again.29 (28.32)New Jersey Devils-129-40-101-1-1Most of us are either trying to find the "sim to the draft button" or enjoying getting a glimpse to our possible future with our young guns. Some games are decent and competitive like taking the blue hot blues to OT. Others are like like 4-0 to the wings. As long as this kind of play doesn't continue into next season, we should be alright. But Lord do I miss TayTay.30 (28.8)Los Angeles Kings-29-40-92-1-1The Kings self-sabotaged their draft lottery a bit this week- the young guys are doing well and Austin Wagner showed off his wheels with a sweet McDavid esque sprint.31 (29.76)Ottawa Senators-28-44-62-1-0Beating Toronto twice in the span of a couple weeks is probably the best thing to happen all season. /r/hockey NHL Power Rankings Week 26 Knightfall Edition Source

Wheeling's Brochu a Brick Wall in 3-1 Komets Win
Tumblr media
For the second time this weekend, the Wheeling Nailers put a shooting gallery on an opposing goaltender, but were unable to get two points to show for their efforts. Wheeling poured 43 shots on rookie goaltender Brett Brochu, who was only beaten in the second period by Tanner Laderoute. The Fort Wayne Komets also succeeded in the special teams department, as Ture Linden scored two power-play goals, while Fort Wayne blanked Wheeling's six power plays in a 3-1 win for the home side at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The Nailers dominated the first period with a 13-4 shots advantage, but neither squad was able to turn on the red light during the opening 20 minutes. However, both sides wasted little time in getting on the board in the middle frame. Fort Wayne struck first at the 1:26 mark. Wheeling attempted to clear the puck on the penalty kill, but William Provost made a steal and promptly set up Ture Linden, who zipped a wrist shot into the right side of the net. The Nailers answered 22 seconds later on a 2-on-1 break. Dillon Hamaliuk saucered a pass across the slot to Tanner Laderoute, who slammed in the feed as he crashed in on the right side. Although those were the only two goals in period two, there was an enormous save with 2:41 remaining, as Taylor Gauthier denied a penalty shot attempt by Jack Dugan, who led the Komets with 12 points. Wheeling's power play struggled to dent the twine for the second time on the weekend, and at the 6:43 mark of the third period, Fort Wayne capitalized on its man advantage. Goaltender Brett Brochu launched a pass ahead to Jake Chiasson, who then connected with Linden for a tip-in at the top of the crease. 2:10 later, Alexis D'Aoust collected a key insurance marker for the Komets, as he squirted a shot through from along the goal line. Fort Wayne took 11 of the first 12 shots in the first 8:53 of the third period, but the rest of the stanza belonged to Brochu. The Nailers took 15 of the final 17 shots and finished with 43, but were unable to cash in again, as the Komets prevailed, 3-1. Brett Brochu was incredible in his ECHL debut for Fort Wayne, as he stopped 42 of 43 shots to earn the victory. Taylor Gauthier made 21 saves on 24 shots for Wheeling. The Nailers will have three home games in the coming week, starting with Thanksgiving Eve on Wednesday at 7:10 against Toledo. That night will feature live IWC Wrestling, Turkey Bowling, $2 Beer Specials, and a Twisted Tea Special. First Responders Night is later that week on Saturday, November 25th, which will feature the Guns vs. Hoses Game following the Nailers match against Iowa at 7:10. The Rundown - Week 2
With six teams tied at 1-1-0-0 after the first week of play in Canada West, there was hope that we'd see some separation between the teams as Week Two got underway on Friday. Well, there was some definite movement in the standings after this weekend's games, and we'll take a look at who did what and what affect those actions had. Needless to say, some teams moved up while others moved down, and the only question was which way did your team go. Let's get those questions answered with today's edition of The Rundown! UBC at MOUNT ROYAL: Two of those 1-1-0-0 teams met Friday night in Calgary as the Cougars hosted the Thunderbirds. Both sides came out of the gate flying as they went up and down the ice, but MRU got an early advantage when UBC's Celine Tardif was sent off for bodychecking at 5:18. Mount Royal went to work, and they capitalized just five seconds into the advantage when Daria O'Neill notched her first goal with a shot from the point off a clean face-off win that got through both the traffic in front of the UBC net and UBC netminder Amelia Boughn to put the Cougars up 1-0! UBC battled back, though, and they found the back of the net at 12:47 when Mathea Fischer unleashed a bullet that Mount Royal goaltender Zoe De Beauville couldn't stop, and the two teams would go to the intermission tied 4-4 in shots and 1-1 in goals! Both Boughn and De Beauville came out with bricks and mortar in the second period as they both put up walls in their respective nets as neither team could solve the goalies. MRU did outshoot UBC 6-5, but we'd forge ahead to the third period in searching of goals to break this stalemate. Despite these two teams having several stern discussions with one another during breaks in play, neither could find the back of the net. In a scarier situation, Ireland Perrott was helped off the ice following an awkward fall with a few minutes to play, and she did not return. Let's hope she's alright. With the horn ending regulation time without a winner, we'd go to overtime for a little extra time fun! Both teams had chances in the four-on-four overtime, but neither Boughn nor De Beauville flinched through the first five minutes of extra time, so we'd go to the three-on-three OT period. It was here where MRU's Megan Carver was whistled for a slash, and that gave UBC the opportunity they needed. Celine Tardif's shot with 14 seconds to play was the deciding blast as her shot eluded De Beauville for the 2-1 UBC double-overtime win! Boughn earned her first win with a 20-save performance while De Beauville suffered the loss after making 21 stops. UBC at MOUNT ROYAL: I was expecting an appearance from Mount Royal backup netminder Emily Severson in this game, but the Cougars went back to De Beauville. UBC predictably turned to Tori Micklash for this game, so it was game-on for Saturday! Both teams brought a determined effort in this game as they went up and down the ice, but nothing would find twine until the 13:59 mark when Jenna Fletcher's shot found room past De Beauville to put the T-Birds up 1-0! Just 1:38 into the middle frame saw the Cougars down by a pair when Emma Hall struck for the Thunderbirds to make it 2-0. MRU's Morgan Ramsey would be given two minutes to reflect on a bodycheck she threw at 2:48, but UBC would cut that time short when Ashley McFadden's shot found the back of the net at 3:56 for her first Canada West goal off Rylind MacKinnon's third helper of the night to make it 3-0 for the Thunderbirds. Clearly, the two UBC goals in under four minutes was not how Mount Royal wanted to start the period, but they regrouped and mounted a few offensive bursts of their own. Micklash, however, stared down all attempts to preserve the 3-0 lead through forty minutes of play. Despite outshooting the T-Birds 6-5 in the third period, Micklash was perfect on this night as MRU could not solve her. UBC played solid defence in front of their goaltender, and the result was a 3-0 win! Micklash stopped all 16 shots she faced for her first shutout of the season while De Beauville stopped 16 of 19 shots in the loss. SASKATCHEWAN at CALGARY: Saskatchewan entered the weekend at 1-1-0-0 after their split with Alberta while the Dinos hosted their home-opening games with an 0-2-0-0 record following a sweep at the hands of the Manitoba Bisons. It wouldn't get any easier for the Dinos as they welcomed the other half of the last season's Canada West Final to Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. And it went pretty much how one would expect with Saskatchewan carrying the play in the first period to a large degree. If it weren't for another spectacular period by Kelsey Roberts who made 15 saves, this game may have gone off the rails early for Calgary. Instead, we went to the first intermission with no score despite the Huskies leading 15-4 in shots. Just ten seconds into the middle frame, Delaney Frey was caught for slashing to join Merissa Dawson in the sin bin from the end of the fist period, and the Huskies went to work on the five-on-three power-play. 40 seconds after Frey was sent off, it was 1-0 for Saskatchewan when Leah Bohlken continued her torrid start to the season by notching the power-play marker past Roberts from the top of the face-off circle for her third goal of the season. The lead would be short-lived, though, as Calgary responded just 1:58 later.
DINOS GOAL!!! After an early second-period strike by the Huskies, the Dinos get it right back with Elizabeth Lang's third of the year!#GoDinos pic.twitter.com/CEgU2bYynw
— UCalgary Dinos Women's Hockey 🏒 (@DinosWHKY) October 13, 2018
Rookie Elizabeth Lang continued what she started in Manitoba as she potted her third goal of the season in as many games past Jasey Book as she finished off the three-on-two to make it a 1-1 game at 2:48! The scoring ended there, however, as the teams tightened up the defence and the goalies did their part. Through two periods, Saskatchewan held a heavy advantage in possession, a major lead in shots at 23-8, but the teams were deadlocked at 1-1! It was only a matter of time before Saskatchewan finally broke through Roberts' wall, and they finally got the goal they needed late in the game when Bailee Bourassa found a wide-open Kayla Kirwan in front of Roberts, and the Huskies forward made no mistake in beating the Calgary netminder at 15:25 to put Saskatchewan up 2-1! Calgary would press late, pulling Roberts for the extra attacker with 57 seconds to play, but they wouldn't solve Book again in this game as Saskatchewan skated to the 2-1 victory! Book made ten saves in the win while Roberts was outstanding with a 30-save effort in the loss. SASKATCHEWAN at CALGARY: In the second-half of the weekend series, it felt a lot like the first game in terms of how the opening period was played. Saskatchewan came out flying, dominated both time of possession and shots, but were thwarted time and again by Calgary's Kelsey Roberts. Like the night before, there was no score between the two teams despite the Huskies holding a 13-2 advantage in shots. Like they did in the first period, Saskatchewan carried the play again. However, on one of their few opportunities, they mad eit count!
DINOS GOAL!!! Sarah Craven opens the scoring in this one. 1-0 Dinos! #GoDinos pic.twitter.com/Uw4rhq1RcN
— UCalgary Dinos Women's Hockey 🏒 (@DinosWHKY) October 14, 2018
The Calgary Dinos grabbed the lead as Holly Reuther's centering pass was perfect in finding an unchecked Sara Craven at the top of the crease, and the Dinos forward made no mistake in beating Jessica Vance at the 14:19 make to put the home side up 1-0! Kelsey Roberts was still the big story as she was keeping the Dinos in this game far more than she should have need to as Saskatchewan held a 21-5 lead in shots through two periods of play. An early third-period penalty on Rachel Paul at 1:27 for holding put the Huskies on the power-play, and they'd use it to tie the game. Kayla Kirwan scored her second goal of the weekend as she beat Roberts 29 seconds after Paul sat down in the penalty box, and this game was knotted up at 1-1. Both teams traded chances, and Jessica Vance needed to be at her best when she robbed Chelsea Court from claiming a game-winning goal, but there would be no winner found through sixty minutes so we were rewarded with free hockey! In the four-on-four overtime period, the Dinos actually had the Huskies pinned in their zone for periods of time, outshooting Saskatchewan 4-1 in the five-minute span, but no goals would be recorded. In the three-on-three period, a scramble in front of Vance resulted in a two-on-one the other way for Saskatchewan, and Bailee Bourassa made the right decision in keeping the puck as she wired a wrist shot over Roberts' glove for the overtime winner at 3:48 of the double-overtime period for the 2-1 win! Vance picked up the win in stopping 20 chances while Roberts suffered her fourth loss of the season despite making 37 saves. MANITOBA at ALBERTA: In the last five seasons at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton, the Pandas have literally owned the Bisons with a 7-1-0-0 record. Manitoba, who entered the weekend with a 2-0-0-0 record, were looking to continue their two-game winning streak against the Pandas that they posted in Games Two and Three of the Canada West Semi-Final last season, including that exciting 1-0 Game Three final that went to four overtime periods! Would the Pandas continue their dominance over Manitoba at home? I'll answer this one upfront: yes. The Pandas controlled the game from start to finish, and looked entirely like the best team in Canada West. Lauren Taraschuk was peppered early and often, and a Megan Neduzak penalty for holding at 6:05 was the first break that Alberta needed.
youtube
Autumn MacDougall would bank a pass from behind the net off Courtlyn Oswald who was defending out front, and Taraschuk had no chance to stop the puck as the Pandas grabbed a lead on the power-play at 7:29! At the end of the period, it was all Pandas as they held a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard and an 11-2 advantage in shots. Alberta would continue their solid play in the second period, but Manitoba had chances on Dayna Owen. The only problem was that Owen was ready and willing to stop all shots as the Pandas closed out the period with the 1-0 lead intact and an 18-7 advantage in shots. Manitoba needed to come out in the third period and get a goal, so they mounted furious pressure with a total of zero shots in the period. Yes, you read that correctly. Erica Rieder did hit the goal post with a shot, so it wasn't like they went twenty minutes without a shot, but they had no recorded shots on net as per the boxscore. With no recorded shots, that means there were no goals, and that means the Pandas took this game by that 1-0 score! Owen earned her first shutout in stopping all seven shots she faced while Taraschuk made 23 saves in suffering her first loss in ten months! MANITOBA at ALBERTA: Manitoba certainly wouldn't have been happy with their performance one night earlier, but there's something to be said with Alberta kicking off the season against both Canada West finalists from last season. Head coach Howie Draper certainly had them ready, and the Pandas came to play once again on Saturday. Alberta started Manitoba-born netminder Halle Oswald in her first Canada West game while the Bisons were without leading scorer on the blueline Lauren Warkentin after she suffered an arm injury the night before. Would the changes make any difference? Alberta brought the heat in the opening frame once more as they sent wave after wave of attacks at the Bisons only to be turned away by Lauren Taraschuk on all 13 opportunities. Oswald wasn't that busy at her end of the ice in making just six saves, and these two squads would enter the first intermission with no goals recorded. The second period was a lot like the the first period with Taraschuk being the busier netminder and the Bisons chasing the puck. Autumn MacDougall has a glorious chance stolen away by Manitoba's big netminder, but the lack of execution by the Bisons was the bigger story in this period as they were once again outshot 11-3 and trailed 24-9 at the second intermission. If it wasn't for Taraschuk, Alberta would have built themselves an impressive lead by that point. The third period saw the special teams come alive for the Pandas, and that led to the opening goal of the game.
youtube
Taylor Kezama broke out of her zone, escaped the checking of Karissa Kirkup, and spotted Alex Poznikoff who skated right by Alison Sexton in to open ice where she collected the pass and sniped a beautiful goal past the glove of Taraschuk just 42 seconds into the period while shorthanded to put the Pandas up 1-0! And they weren't done there.
youtube
Hannah Olenyk's shot zipped by Brielle Dacquay-Neveux and got through Taraschuk on the power-play at 13:23, and that was more than enough for the Pandas to ice this game as Manitoba couldn't solve Oswald with their eight shots in the period as Alberta posted a second-straight win via shutout with the 2-0 victory! Oswald won her first career start in Canada West with a 17-save shutout - also her first shutout in her career - while Lauren Taraschuk suffered her second-straight loss in a 27-save effort. REGINA at LETHBRIDGE: Normally, games between Regina and Lethbridge have little fanfare. It is expected both of these teams will compete for the final two playoff spots once all is said and done this season, but tonight's game featured a little record breaking as one player went off and did something pretty amazing. We'll get to her performance in a second, but let's get down to business with the goal scoring. Both teams dame out a little more on the defensive side as it appeared neither wanted to make the first mistake. Midway through the period, we finally got some solid offence as Martina Maskova showed some impressive speed in tracking down a loose puck that slid a little too far for a breakaway, but she turned it into a solid wraparound that got past a laterally-moving Alicia Anderson as Maskova got to the post first, and the Regina Cougars grabbed the 1-0 lead at 10:48! The remainder of the period would see an uptick in the offensive chances, but the Cougars closed out the period with the 1-0 lead and the 8-7 advantage in shots. Early in the second period, Lethbridge's Alli Borrow beat Jane Kish with a shot, but the iron behind Kish kept the score at a 1-0 game. Whatever was said in the dressing room by head coach Michelle Janus seemed to resonate as the Pronghorns were certainly the more lively bunch in the middle frame, but it would Regina who doubled their lead. Lilla Carpenter-Boesch sent Jordan Kulbida streaking down the wing with a pass before she cut to the middle and made a great deke on Anderson to score on the backhand to make it 2-0 for Regina at the 12:30 mark! Despite being outshot 16-9 in the period, it was Regina leading by a pair of goals after two periods! Again, the Pronghorns brought every bit of offensive they could find in the third period, putting pucks on net from every angle at every opportunity. The only problem was that Jane Kish had other ideas about this offensive onslaught. Brett Campbell and Alli Borrow were stoned on the power-play early in the period. Tricia Van Vaerenbergh was turned aside on a couple of opportunities. Kenzie Lausberg was denied on an outstanding post-to-post save by Kish. When the dust settled, the Pronghorns had outshot the Cougars 22-8 in the period and 45-25 on the night, but the final score was 2-0 in favour of the Cougars! Jane Kish was simply incredible in stopping all 45 shots she faced for the shutout while Alicia Anderson made 23 stops in the loss. It is here where we'll write a little history because Jane Kish broke the Canada West record for most saves in a shutout performance on this night with her new 45-save standard! Kish broke a record shared by former Regina Cougar Jennifer Schmidt, set on October 18, 2013, and by Lethbridge's Alicia Anderson one week earlier. Her shutout was also the eighth of her career, tying the school record held by Schmidt. Needless to say, Friday night was a pretty historic night for the 21 year-old Kish when it comes to the record books at Regina and in Canada West! Congratulations, Jane! REGINA at LETHBRIDGE: For the first two weeks of the Canada West season, defence has ruled the conference for the most part. We've seen a team hit four goals in a game just once - Manitoba over Calgary - and we've seen a combined five goals scored by both teams in one game just three times in 15 games this season. Regina and Lethbridge decided to show the rest of the conference what goal scoring looked like in this game. These two teams came out flying with chances at both ends of the ice early on. Jordan Kulbida's slash at the 4:28 mark put the Pronghorns on the power-play, and they would cash in. Mattie Apperson found Alli Borrow open, and the Pronghorns sniper finally found a way to beat Jane Kish with her shot at 5:09 to put Lethbridge up 1-0. Late in the period, a harmless-looking shot from the wall by Jordan Kulbida handcuffed Alicia Anderson in the Lethbridge net, allowing the puck to find the twine as Regina tied the game at 14:55. The teams would head to the intermission knotted up at 1-1 with Regina holding a 14-11 edge in shots. Early in the second period with Jodi Gentile in the sin bin, the Cougars power-play went to work. Jordan Kulbida fed Nikki Watters-Matthes, and she went high on the glove side past a screened Alicia Anderson for the 2-1 Cougars lead at 3:51. Later in the period, the Regina power-play struck again from the same combination of players as Kulbida fed Watters-Matthes, and she went high over the glove of Anderson again, this time from the top of the face-off circle, as Regina jumped ahead 3-1 at the 12:28 mark. Kish, however continued her stellar play in this period, denying all 13 shots by the Pronghorns as the third period loomed with Regina out in front. Kish brought the solid goaltending into the third period as she denied all chances on an early Lethbridge power-play to shift momentum back to Regina, and they would capitalize once more on a power-play of their own after Tricia Van Vaerenbergh was given a break for tripping a Cougar. Jordan Kulbida would pick up her fourth point of the night when she set up Chelsea Hallson for the power-play marker to make it 4-1 at 8:16, and it appeared that Regina had this one wrapped up. Or did they? Van Vaerenbergh got one goal back when she cleaned up a scramble in front of Kish by potting her third goal of the season at 11:40, and the Pronghorns were down 4-2. They would continue to pressure the Cougars as the game wore on, and they pulled Anderson with just over two minutes to play. That strategy would pay off for Lethbridge as Mikaela Ray was able to score in a goalmouth scramble at 19:20 to make it 4-3! However, Jane Kish and the Regina Cougars were able to weather the final 40 seconds of the game to claim the 4-3 victory on this day! Kish picked up her second-straight win with her 29-save performance while Anderson suffered her second-straight loss despite making 32 stops on the night.

The Last Word
This is entirely not about Canada West because there was a pretty big moment that happened out in the Maritimes where the UNB Varisty Reds women's team took to the ice for the first time in a decade! UNB's first game came last night when they hosted the Mount Allison Mounties in AUS action, and the woman pictured in the UNB uniform is Jennifer Bell. Why is she important? Well, she scored UNB's first goal of the season on the power-play just 21 seconds into the second period, so there's a little history for all of you U SPORTS trivia buffs. Unfortunately for the Varsity Reds, they fell in overtime to the Mounties by a 2-1 score, but they recorded a point in their first game back on the AUS circuit! Congratulations to the Varsity Reds on an amazing night of hockey, and you can watch the game in its entirety by following this link and going to the "Archive" section of page! Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice! from Sports News http://hockey-blog-in-canada.blogspot.com/2018/10/the-rundown-week-2.html

The Hockey News’ 2018-19 Season Preview: Winnipeg Jets
News
The Jets were stopped short of the final by the upstart Golden Knights last season, but Winnipeg is primed to challenge for the Stanley Cup again this season.
Connor Hellebuyck and Blake Wheeler| Darcy Finley/NHLI via Getty Images
The Hockey News’ 2018-19 Season Preview series dives into off-season transactions, best- and worst-case scenarios and one burning question for each team in reverse order of Stanley Cup odds.
Stanley Cup odds: 6-1
Key Additions: Laurent Brossoit, G
Key Departures: Paul Stastny, C; Joel Armia, RW; Toby Enstrom, D; Shawn Matthias, LW; Matt Hendricks, LW; Michael Hutchinson, G; Julian Melchiori, D
BEST-CASE SCENARIO Years of piling up high draft picks loaded the Jets’ roster with sublime talent, and that finally culminated in a 114-point breakout, easily the best season in Winnipeg/Atlanta history. The scariest thing for the rest of the league: this team hasn’t peaked. Patrik Laine still has that 50-goal season coming. Connor Hellebuyck became a Vezina Trophy finalist and tied for the league lead in wins in his first full season as starter. From speedsters Nikolaj Ehlers and Kyle Connor to emerging workhorse defensemen Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrissey to top-liner Mark Scheifele, most of the Jets’ star players are in or approaching their prime years. Don’t forget veterans Blake Wheeler and Dustin Byfuglien, both still dominant in their 30s.
The Jets can keep pace with anyone offensively. They can match any team’s star power. Their roster is littered with end-of-season award threats. They have more prospects coming, too. Speedy, two-way pivot Jack Roslovic, for instance, broke into the league last year and could be the latest Jet to bust out if he leapfrogs Bryan Little for the No. 2 center job. The Jets are young, strong, fast and talented. Sound hyperbolic? It should. They’re our Stanley Cup pick, after all.
WORST-CASE SCENARIO Paul Stastny was a hugely impactful acquisition at last season’s trade deadline. He was an ideal fit between Ehlers and Laine, forming a second line better than many teams’ first lines. Losing him in free agency, to the Vegas team that eliminated them no less, hurts the Jets a lot. The underrated Little remains a decent second-line center, but he’s no Stastny, and the bottom half of the lineup doesn’t look nearly as dangerous when Little shifts up. Mathieu Perreault, Adam Lowry and sparkplug Brandon Tanev are useful contributors, but the forward group as a whole can’t match the depth of some Cup contenders.
The same goes for the defense corps, actually. Trouba and Morrissey are a great shutdown tandem, Byfuglien can take over a game like few other D-men with his mix of brute force and scoring ability, but then there’s a drop-off. Tyler Myers had a good year but hasn’t been consistent. The group of Dmitry Kulikov, Sami Niku, Joe Morrow, Ben Chiarot and Tucker Poolman will produce a serviceable third pair. The blueline isn’t a weakness, but it isn’t elite. But this is nitpicking. There’s only so much you can criticize about a team that projects to be the league’s best.
BURNING QUESTION Can Hellebuyck cement himself as one of the NHL’s elite keepers? Hellebuyck was excellent in 2017-18 and basically rewrote the Winnipeg/Atlanta single-season record book with his performance. To wit, he now owns the single-season marks for wins, shutouts, save percentage and minutes played. He also shares the record for most saves in a season, matching Kari Lehtonen’s 1,892 from the 2006-07 campaign. But we’ve seen single season breakouts before only for young netminders to come crashing back to earth. In fact, the very netminder Hellebuyck usurped last season for the top job, Steve Mason, is one of the more prominent recent examples of such a scenario.
Granted, Hellebuyck’s performance felt different. He’s been working towards this, and despite a tough sophomore campaign in which he saw a significant dip in his numbers, Hellebuyck’s career averages are indicative of a netminder who’s far more than a flash in the pan. He boasts a .917 SP and 2.55 GAA across his 149 games in the NHL. And if Hellebuyck was going to turn into a pumpkin, it likely would have occurred in the playoffs. Instead, he out-duelled eventual Vezina winner Pekka Rinne in the post-season (before being out-duelled himself when Marc-Andre Fleury did his best impression of an acrobatic brick wall) and sported a .922 SP and 2.36 GAA when the Jets’ playoff run came to a halt in the Western Conference final.
There’s a lot of faith that Hellebuyck is the real deal. This season is his chance to prove it.
THE HOCKEY NEWS’ PREDICTION: 1st in the Central Division. We’re picking the Jets to win the Central and ride that home-ice advantage to the Stanley Cup. Winnipeg is deep and lethal up front with a blueline that is among the West’s best and a Vezina-calibre goaltender. That is a winning equation.

Devils @ Leafs - Game 20 - Nov.16.20
KEY NARRATIVES
Toronto Maple Leafs (12-7-0) vs. New Jersey Devils (11-4-2)
When the Leafs face off against the New Jersey Devils for the second time this season, they will have to do so without Auston Matthews. In spite of practicing with the team this week, it's been announced that he's not quite ready to get back into the fray.
With news of Matthews absence, it appears Nikita Soshnikov will make it into the Leafs lineup right away. Sosh, who played 56 games with the Leafs last year, was called up from the Marlies this week to prevent a clause in his contract that would have allowed the twenty-four-year-old to go back to the KHL if he didn’t make the Maple Leafs' roster. Even though their hand was forced, Soshnikov seems to have earned his call-up after not making a stacked Leafs team out of camp this year. He's scored 14 points in 16 games with a dominant Marlies team. Lastly, if Sosh plays just three more games in the NHL he'll burn the final year of his entry-level contract and the Leafs will have to sign or trade him next summer. Considering the many layers of his contract situation and his status as a Babcock-favorite, it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out with Sosh.
Anyway: the Devils. New Jersey served the Leafs their first taste of defeat this season when they played on October 4th and the Devils haven't really slowed down since. In spite of many models and experts projecting New Jersey to be one of the worst teams in the league this season, the Devils are currently sitting in first place in the extremely competitive Metro division. Their success can be largely attributed to three hot-out-of-the-gate rookies (Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, Will Butcher), as well as Taylor Hall working towards a career season.  So, were the predictions that wrong? Are the Devils that good?
While they'll possibly stay out of the basement of the league, the short answer is no.
I explained PDO as an indicator of "luck" in some detail when the Leafs' played in Los Angeles. At that time the Kings were leading the league in that area with a PDO of 102.5 (league average = 100). Twenty games into the season, the New Jersey Devils have the highest PDO in the league, a whopping 102.9.
While PDO can be a good general indicator of puck luck, there are other predictive metrics that are even more worrying for New Jersey. Below is a chart from Sean Tierney that illustrates the difference between Expected Goals For* and Actual Goals For. New Jersey is all the way over on the right, having scored almost ten percent more goals than they would have been expected to.

So, what does an xGF% differential tell us that PDO doesn't? In short, it can begin to explain whether or not a team might have a reason for having a higher than average shooting percentage (which would boost their PDO, or apparent "luck"). If a team has a higher than average shooting percentage but a small xGF% differential (see Toronto above) it would imply that the types of shots they're taking have a higher likelihood of going in, and the high shooting percentage isn't simply luck based.
In New Jersey's case, there is no indication that an over average PDO is sustainable.
While it seems a fall back to earth is inevitable for the Devils, it's impossible to predict when exactly that will come. We can only hope that luck runs out against the Leafs.

THE POST GAME
Score: W 1-0 OT
For a lot of fans, that game was a lot more reminiscent of the historic New Jersey Devils. While some of that can obviously be attributed to the more conservative style that the Leafs have been using in the absence of Auston Matthews, this definitely wasn't the high octane competition that you'd expect from two young, offensively potent teams.
While the Leafs got rolled in terms of shots on goal, only amassing 25 to the Devils' 42, they weren't so horribly outmatched in possession, coming away with a CF% of 48.42. And those are some pretty damn clean statistics, considering the teams were tied the entire game. No scoring effects here! No siree!
That's not to say the entire game was boring. In all situations, both teams compiled over three expected goals for. There was a lot of "YES — no!" and "NO — yes!" in this game, but both netminders did amazing imitations of brick walls.
Corey Schneider could have nabbed a second job in a circus with some of the acrobatic saves that absolutely robbed the Leafs of a couple goals earlier in the game, but at the end of the day, it was Freddie's night. In spite of certain members of the Devils organization playing like they were oweda goal, particularly Hall who had 7 (!) shots on goal, Freddie held the fort cleanly. Barring one or two lucky breaks, like a puck hitting the nob of his stick, it was nearly perfect goaltending that earned him his second shutout of the season. In spite of getting absolutely peppered in overtime, he slammed the door in the Devils’ faces and paved the way for the unlikely end to this game.
Freddie made 42 saves and, as pointed out by Scott Wheeler on Twitter, raised his season sv% from .901 to .909, almost spot on league average. Luckily, it's looking like that's only set to climb higher as well. After another cold October, Frederik Andersen's sv% is sitting at a .928 for the month of November. He looks focused, dialed in, and it seems like we may have our favorite Freddie back.
Speaking of players we've wanted back, William Nylander hadn't scored a goal since October 21st, against the Ottawa Senators. Just as Marner did in the last game against Boston, Willie finally caught a break in the dying seconds of overtime.
The thing about three on three overtime is that there are only three guys on the ice. I know, right? This has some awesome results in the form of lots of free-flowing speed, frequent odd man rushes, and all the scoring chances you can stomach. It's also exhausting for players and difficult to execute on the fly line changes. Generally, shifts for forwards are only around 45 seconds. When Nylander, Kadri, and Gardiner rushed into the offensive zone at the end of OT, it was just about when they would have executed a line change in regulation. But this is overtime baby. Instead, with ten seconds left in the game, Nylander dishes a beautiful, spinning pass to... nobody.
With an exhausted set of Leafs on the ice that felt like the end. We're going to a shootout and the dumbest scenario ever where two goalies get a shutout--but apparently, Willie was finished with this slump. With the Devils seeming to assume that the game is over, Nylander glides (tiredly, at the end of a 58-second sprint of a shift) behind the net, out to the front, and ruins both Schneider and Hall's nights.
And that puts a bow on the fifth straight Leafs' win (and not directly relevant but someone slightly relevant, Arizona got their first regulation win of the entire season and it was against Montreal - HAH!) so it was a good night, everyone... a good night.

Here are Ilya Bryzgalov's best moments from Sportsnet’s NHL trade deadline broadcast
How does he not have his own show by now?
Say what you will about Ilya Bryzgalov’s goaltending skills, but the former NHL netminder makes for one entertaining broadcaster.
Sportsnet added Bryzgalov to their lineup for the NHL’s trade deadline day yesterday and he added some much needed flair to a quiet day on air. It’s not the first time Bryzgalov has been put in front of a microphone either, as The Players Tribune gave him free rein to talk to players at the All-Star Game.
We’ve talked about the trades and we’ve talked about their implications, but we’ve yet to give Bryzgalov his due for being the most fun part of the 2017 NHL trade deadline.
“My name is Ilya Bryzgalov and I’m your new leader"

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) March 1, 2017
Bryzgalov’s answer on being the newbie to a locker room is quite fantastic at the 1:41 mark. Also spectacular is his suggestion that the Sportsnet panel go topless earlier in the clip at 50 seconds. No context needed, my friends.
“You were a brick wall.” “Yeah, like usually.”

Bryzgalov and former NHL forward Colby Armstrong bantered about the goaltender’s stellar performance at the 2009 World Championships. Bragging Bryzgalov is the best Bryzgalov.
“Russians: they grumpy, they tough, you know no smile... I’m kind of one of those guys.”

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) March 1, 2017
That gem precedes a heartwarming story of Bryzgalov’s return to Anaheim for the first time.
“Do you believe aliens walk amongst us?” “Oh for sure!”
youtube
Bryzgalov has made his love of the universe no secret in the past, and he revealed some “insider information” to the Sportsnet team in true Bryz fashion.
“Why do you like purple for your tie?” “It’s royalty’s color”
It's the end of the #NHLTrade day, so @JeffMarek asked @bryzgoalie30 about everything other than trades. What a legend. http://pic.twitter.com/ZpXBcVBjJ3
— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) March 1, 2017
In an after segment with Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek, Bryzgalov revealed the book he’s currently reading, if he’s dressed his cat up, and how math has helped him in his career.
Other odds and ends
Video wasn’t able to capture all of Bryzgalov’s genius, so here’s a bit more of the wonder via Twitter.
"Hold it right there, Bryz. We've got Kevin Shattenkirk on the line." Bryz: "Can I breathe?"

"My God, look at my stats!... And they say Bryz terrible." —Ilya Bryzgalov as a technician calls up his db page
— luke fox (@lukefoxjukebox) March 1, 2017
Bryz just said that both PHX and DET put in claims on him. "Detroit always want the best." then he pointed. amazing.
