ARTISTS! COMIC DUBBERS! ATTENTION, PLEASE!

I have a story for y'all and this story is not so bright and beautiful. I thought I would not talk about it in public, but I can't leave the situation like this, because it's important. I just have to do that, because I don't want people get in the same situation.

I will talk about you @undertalecomictv. No offence.

One year ago I get a message from David - owner of "Undertale Comic TV” and "Sans Comic TV" on YouTube. He asked me about promotion and using my videos (animations and memes) on his channels. I had a terrible headache at that day and this offer was a little bit strange to me. I asked to clarify how it supposed to work and for some reasons I said "yes" at the end. That was a dumb decision, because I didn't realize what I'll get and why I even said yes. But I don't have any regrets, because I can say a lot of things now. This how our first dialogue looked like:

I have to mention – we DID NOT talk about comic dubs as well, I just made a suggestion like "It will be cool to see comic dubs from you in the future, but that's just a thoughts". We did not talk about any agreement, I just said it and that's all. After half of the year, I got a message with dub of one of my Kustard comics. I was happy to see it, because this dub was very cool and this was the first time when somebody made a dub for me. I was too happy and did not see what I missed. I just… enjoyed. They leaved a links on me in the description and in the video too, so that was totally fine and I shared this dub with my followers in both communities – foreign and Russian.

All was good, I got a couple of more dubs, and I loved them really much, but in one day I saw something what made me feel like "???". I saw a video on SCTV with a frame from my animation (Bloom meme). It was used as a thumbnail, with erased reply from echo flowers. This video contained comic of my friend @nsfwgarbagedump

The most important – there was a several pages what me and @hakkids has colored. In this video was no credits in description. Only nicknames of Crude and me (Hakki was not even included but we worked together on coloring and we're still making colors for the rest of the pages). I was confused, because frame from animation was cropped out of my video (I did not post this pic anywhere, I remember that). When I gave a permission to use my videos I did not think they will be used in this way. That's just not nice.

I saw a part two and there was my art again, but none of my content in the video. There was rest of b&w pages and I can't understand why my art was used for the thumbnail if there's none of my stuff in the video. They could use one of the pages or frames from comic for a thumbnail, but they used my stuff because it looks good? That's a clickbait, you know?

Crude had a conversation with them and after that they deleted their comic, both of the parts. I was sad about the fact they did not leave the credits on us like LINKS, because some of the people having a problems with searching artists, and that would be better to leave the links, not only nicknames:

I was too disappointed and had a thought about ask them to stop making dubs on my stuff. I messaged them with this offer, even if I loved their dubs before – there was no way out. I got an answer like this:

After that, I was confused a bit more. They made a dub of our modified Kustard before in one of the compilations. I was happy to see that at first, but Hakki told me one thing, which turned all the tables. They messed up with voices and some specific details, includes the fact they DID NOT asked about permission from Hakki about using Ras (modified Red) in the dubs. Yes, those comics was made by me, but Ras belongs to Hakki and I got a permission to use him in my stories, because hell – we are friends, so we allowed to use our boys in our comics.

If somebody giving you a permission to make comic dubs (but they did not get a permission from me on this either if we look at the situation a bit closer) you have to ask again before using Fan-Characters/Original Characters in dubs. They can have some specific differences and it's always better to ask. Much better to send SAMPLES too, because some people can be picky. If you don't want to make all those "difficult" stuff – just do not touch FC's and OC's. And ask ALL the artists if you want to make dubs with two (or more) characters which belongs to different people. The first one can say "yes, sure!" and the second one can be against it. Respect people! Ask them about their characters!

I asked to delete all the videos with our modified Kustard (or at least cut out the fragments with them), and when I told this was not only my desire, I got a message which made me super confused and angry at the same time. I got an excuse like "we worked so hard, give our permission to keep your videos". I was triggered about it, because I'm already told about the reasons why I asked to delete those videos.

I told about that again and said about I worked hard too, because that's true. Artists spend a lot of time when they working on one picture, so that's no need to talk about making comics or animations. So I had to ask to delete the modified Kustard, OR I'll ask to delete ALL my stuff from the channels. If they'll refuse – I'll strike them down. You can see my full answer below:

I don't know, maybe I'm cruel piece of garbage or what, but I HATE when people use excuses like family and stuff. That's super lame and I can explain why I think in that way. You know, all of us have families, somebody has children too but people didn't use this fact as an excuse to make shit and break the rules. If you have a sweetheart and babies – how can you use them like this? It looks like you're only worrying about yourself, and did not want to pay attention to feeling of the artists which works you're using in dubs. I can understand all those things, because I have a family too, just like other artists do. I even have some ill people in my family and we have to pay big amounts to help them, plus bills, buying food, etc. BUT! I DID NOT use all this stuff for this kind of situations! I just continue to work and that's all!

That's the same situation like ask the artist to make you an art for free because you're poor little creature and you have no money to pay for your bills, clothes, etc. NOBODY have to work for free and nobody have to break the low to get something what they want! That's an awful shit, don't do that!

About monetization, huh? You know I don't like liars, I disrespect them, but I disrespect the greedy ones liars even more. My videos was monetized on those channels and NOBODY WARNED ME ABOUT THAT. I just got an excuse like "I asked some artists in the past and they was okay with monetization". Well duh? If one person said "yes" that doesn't mean you can just being a sly shit and don't ask people about monetization their content ever again. You HAVE TO ask artists about that! Somebody can be against it! This content is NOT YOURS, so that's terrible to make moneys on works of artists who probably get NOTHING for their works. Nothing but love and appreciation, and sometimes they even doesn't have this too. And that's sad.

I can understand you have to pay dubbers for their voices and work, David, but you had to ask about monetization anyway. That's just not cool. I don't know about people in your crew and I don't know are they even know about that, but I'm really disappointed. I can say thanks to Jordan Woollen for his voice. Btw – he's good in voice acting and I can be grateful to him for those minutes of happiness. I don’t think that is his fault.

If keeping of these channels is too hard for you – maybe you should find something what will fits you more? Something where you will not need to lie to people or making something like this. I dunno, maybe you can be a better person? Or you just like to make people feel bad or thinks about they're cruel with you… Who knows? You told my stuff has been deleted from your channels, but you didn't. Some of the videos are hidden, and I can see that because I have links. So why are you lying to me again? Just delete them, I'll not allow to bring them back. Because I can't trust you now.

Limited is not the same thing as deleted, my friend.

That was heartbreaking. I LOVED those dubs with all my soul and I couldn't even imagine all will end like this. I just disappointed and this story was broke me on a couple of days. But after I recovered myself, I decided to make this post. I just can't hold it in my soul anymore…

If I got a true apology with something like "yes, I understand how hard to be an artist and how much strength you spent to make arts and comics, so I'm sorry. It was my mistake that I did not tell you" maybe I could allow you to continue to make dubs. But you started to feed me with excuses about how hard that was for you. You totally forgot about my feelings. I don't have any hate to you, David. And I don't call people to hate you for what you've done. I just told them my story. Maybe you lied some of them as you done with me, and now they will decide what to do by themselves. But think about it and stop acting like this to people. Please.

Dear voice actors, I begging you – please, ask permissions before making dubs, talk with artists about all the issues. Ask them about monetization, about their characters, credits, etc. Please, respect their feelings and make a good things! I love dubs and I'm always want to support good dubbers, so don't play with feelings of people. We're doing are best to make a cool stories which you could dub. And some of us ready to pay you for this. Because you’re bring some good vibes with your dubs when you making them with love and desire.

Dear artists – be careful with some kind of offers. Talk with dubbers and ask them about everything. Do not be shy to make it, and if you don't like something – tell them about it before it's too late. Don't be such a softie like I was.

Guys, do not be a dicks, respect each other and try to become better on the next year. Artists, comic dubbers – y'all great while you respect the work of each other. We all have hard work, so be good people and don't lie to anybody. Thank you for your attention, Marry Chrysler and happy holidays!

Thank you, Yu...Really...I have been wondering myself about that. I mean, why have I just seemed to have some memory gaps while writing things, why you wanted me to do the word association. I don't even know what to say. Jake wants to protect me, I love am really thankful for that. Of course I am. But..I am not a child. I have a right to know. I do not like being lied to. And...Please don't ask me why, I just.. know. Whatever this silver thingy is, it is not here with the intention to hurt. [The writing does change just the littlest bit; it is clean. As if for a moment Liska would not have been on top of a boat] It seems more like the other way around. It seems hurt.

Now the rest: Don't worry, Yu, I am still careful. I don't want to alert Jakes pursuers or the MWAF. But actually I am glad for the Duskwood stasis in the moment. It makes things kinda easier.

Yeah you are right...Still, I hope Goldie is doing okay. I am not sure if his state only came from the stasis but maybe also from Red Ink? Who started writing at times?

That the knowledge got stuffed in my head probably really was a matter of time, like you said. I would guess it was Goldies doing? But I am not sure.

I also think that Red Ink could be the enitity Goldie talked about much earlier; the one working against Goldie...

Before I do take any guesses on Red Inks domain I'll try and wait for more information, maybe we'll figure things out with time. (I btw could not read whatever they commented in Jakes letter either)

The first nickname I would have in mind for Sweetly Sleeping is 'Dream'. I mean, it would fit. But I'll just let you all deside whether we want to take this one.

About the 'rotting from the outside in' part. I also believe it is something metaphorical, but even the thought makes me really uncomfortable.

And now to your experience, Yu: Overall ot sounds damn scary and interesting at the same time...I don't know how else to describe it. Especially the part of you talking to Sweetly Sleeping but also that you as well shattered into shards there.

Yes, I did hear you. "Hello, I walk into empty". I don't even know how often you said this...It really scared me at first. You also told me that it was you a bit later and that you did not know what was happening. You asked whether I was talking or not and that you could not hear me.

In the end you said that I was supposed to tell you something after you woke up. But it didn't make any sense...There is nothing I could tell you know because you did not manage to get it out for me to understand anymore.

Reading the part about Prometheus and also your theory Jake was really interesting, too. Especially since I love mythology. Again I don't want to agree or deny anything in the moment.

And 'Stalker', I have one little question...What is it that you are not telling us? I just believe there is...Something. If not I apologise, I guess. (And I WILL be keeping an eye for enemies. I constantly do. But Padfoot and his girls are non of them.)

This Red Ink entity should be watched closely, I think. At least, as much as is possible.

"Dream" most certainly fits. If no one else has any better ideas, that will work.

I am not entirely sure what to think of that descriptor, to be honest. Allegory, metaphors, and symbolism are not my specialties.

Interesting as it may have been, it affected Yuvon quite a bit. Hopefully, she’ll be better by tomorrow, at least somewhat.

While I have never heard the song Yuvon is talking about, I will say that Secret World Legends, the apparent source of Yuvon learning of the song, is among other genres a horror game. Make of that what you will.

It is a shame that Yuvon cut out before she could send her message properly, but there’s little to be done about it now.

Yes, the Prometheus puzzle seems to be of particular import. Yuvon was working on it, but now she seems to be pacing and muttering to herself. Once I’m done with this letter, I think I should speak with her.

I am utterly sure that Stalker is keeping at least something from us, but I doubt they will share it, especially as it is far more likely to be the death of me than of Yuvon. So it goes.

Honestly? Part Song Titles/Lyrics and part 'This Line I Wrote Sounds Kinda Pretentious for a Piss Fic... I'm Definitely Gonna Use It'. Or just a general theme. Or a pun. Looking at my fic list... there's a lot of puns in titles.

Tbh I rarely title things until I'm actually on the ao3 posting page so I just scramble to pull one out of my ass XD There's no real method to my madness

His words were abruptly cut off by a tightness around his throat, the grip clenching to restrict his airflow, little by little. While admittedly surprised, he didn't panic, merely studying what he could of the arm in his sightline. The metal tips of her scissors traced his Adam's apple, then slid up to dig into the flesh on the underside of his jaw. She didn't draw blood, but all it would take was a hint more pressure. Now that he was forced to lock eyes, she leaned in so that her breath flared in his face.

"Kiss me like you mean it, pretty boy~" she commanded, leering down at him. She'd climbed onto the edge of the chair for better access, pressing their foreheads together. And, not-so coincidentally, pressed her left knee directly against his swollen abdomen. What breath she hadn't choked out of him was stolen in a pained wheeze, his vision spotting. Now, not only were his teeth swimming, his head was, and he loathed whatever noise of pleading had managed to escape his lips during his lack of focus. She removed both her hand and weapon from his neck, and he only took a moment to inhale before he shoved himself into as much of her as his binds would allow. Her chest, nearly flat enough to rival his own, pressed against him, and he blocked out her obnoxious sighs with a growl, tilting his head to smother her lips.

I swear any other time I'd have a whole list of my best stupid jokes and puns from my fics ready to fling at people but here I am, blanking as soon as I'm asked lmao. Isn't that always how it goes c': I had to dig through my ao3 and this is what I came up with, not sure if they're my ultimate faves bc I tend to pick favourites by the whole fic in general? But here we are!

I tend to write in run-ons and broken sentences so one of these is more like an excerpt? Because otherwise it wouldn't make sense lol

The President could bite into her, tear her apart in any way she saw fit and gorge upon her, but this would never be a one time affair. She was going to leave her mark before she succumbed...

This is actually an interesting question to me because the answer really does vary depending on what your definition of 'popular' is. Do you measure it by hits? Audience interaction? Platform? I had too much fun clicking around the stats page to analyze that so have answers for different criteria:

Hits: 'Getting Your Feet Wet'

Kudos: 'Tear You Apart'

Comment threads: 'Conundrums Lead to Collapse'

Tumblr Notes: 'Cops and Robbers' (and also those Akira drabbles like him in class or in Sojiro's car. Y'all are just absolute sluts for the p5 protag over here lol)

So what I'm getting from this is ao3 prefers my various femslash bs and tumblr wants the Nasty Crime Boi. Which is fine with me bc I love writing both 😎

How to tell what your *ntp is feeling... And help?

AKA: how to *nfj *ntps

Because I saw some asks on other blogs about this and wanted to try haha.

Edit: This seems to apply to all tps actually 😂

Starting

Check facial expression.

If forlorn and pale, *ntp is sad and PROBABLY DOESN'T KNOW WHY. Go to unknown feeling steps.

If angry, *ntp knows why their mad. If they're refusing to tell you, they're mad at you. Go to angry steps.

If happy, your *ntp will look calm and mildly oblivious. Don't attempt emotional counselling or you will produce angry *ntp.

If some other complex feeling, they will say 'Idk'. Go to unknown feeling steps.

If sad for known reason, you should probably know why too. If you don't, ask them and they'll just tell you. If they refuse to tell you they're now angry with you for not knowing. Go to angry steps.

If you know what they're feeling and they need cheering up for any reason, go to cheering up steps.

If *ntp is crying, go to EMERGENCY RESET steps. Sit tight.

A few tips

Be warm. *ntps respond well to genuine warmth and concern.

Speak softly. Everyone responds fell to this, but especially stressed Nps.

Be direct. *ntps don't wanna go to magic emotional fairy land, weirdos.

Be subtle. *ntps recoil if they sense you think you're better than them, so if you tho k you're gonna go in their and save the *ntp, you better pretend you don't think that.

Remember, *ntps have Ti. You can approach this problem and fix it through breaching their low Fe through Ti. Try talking about feelings as thoughts - they're basically the same thing anyway.

Try to use Fe or even Te to pull this off.

Vibes.

Eye contact.

Physical contact. Actually gives away some important clues...

Pauses. Very important to let the *ntp think.

Know when to stop pushing. It's usually when the *ntp shows all body language signs of pulling and looking away. Just give then a hug, say you love them or whatever, and leave them be for a while before trying again.

Unknown Feelings

Sit down calmly next to *ntp and look them in the eyes, study them for a few seconds. They will probably look at you with amused concern.

Ask them what's wrong outright, or if they're okay. They'll say 'Idk' or equivalent vague answer. Mbs even 'I'm fine' or 'nothing's wrong' while avoiding eye contact or looking depressed.

Touch them gently if that's normal for y'all. If they pull away you have a grumpy *ntp who probs needs you to step it up a notch. If they pull away at this point it doesn't necessarily mean they don't want to talk.

Just frown and say something like 'you don't seem fine'. After a pause, if they don't suggest something, make your own suggestion.

'Are you upset with me because of this thing I did today?' is a good place to start. *ntp will probs want to clear up if they're upset with you, so will be like 'nah, it's just this other thing.' Alternatively, they'll say 'I tho k I might be', in which case you can talk about that like normal. Good job for finding out!

If it's something else they're not specifying, remember: you don't always need to know everything. So your next question isn't for details, it's just: 'would you like to talk about it?' with an additional 'can I help?'

Here I must mildly split the types. From experience, the intp will neither talk nor ask for help, and they won't appear to have changed either, even if their vibe is a bit better to you. But when they're feeling a little better they'll be really appreciative and soft to you, so it's not useless. Just try to make life quiet and easier for them. Also from experience, the entp might want to talk or have help, or they might just start crying or something. It's pretty easy to walk them through from there but...

Avoid bailing the entp out completely. K, if an intp is crying and asking for help, do it. It's weird, they defs need it (Si grips are mainly an entp thing tbh). If an entp is doing it... Help them fix the problem themselves, because otherwise they'll hate you for it later. Entps can make their own chaos, but they don't like being treated like babies. This means you

Look into the entp's eyes and - being pretty harsh tbh - tell them to stop crying and outline what they should do. Then you leave them with a hug or whatever and they're usually all good. This does not apply to deaths and stuff like that. Be normal here 😂

Congratulations! You have worked out your *ntps feelings and have hopefully helped a little. Hopefully they're not in a grip and it's all over now.

Angry

If your *ntp is mad at you, they'll look mad and quiet and won't be telling you why. Here's how to work this out.

Calmly say, 'I know you're mad at me. Why?' if they don't respond, propose something. That'll usually get them going. 'NO, IT'S BECAUSE YOU DID THIS!' You're in pretty hot water if they're still not responding after this bait.

Explain how you can't fix the problem if they don't tell you.

Try to go back to before they got angry and try to view things from their perspective - it's possible they're in a paranoid Ne-Fe loop and have completely misinterpreted something you did. This is more likely to be the entp's problem. It's also possible you offended their Ti by disagreeing with them or telling them what to do.

Say what your conclusions are and clarify your intentions. 'I didn't tell you how to boil water because I think you're an idiot, I did it because I really like that pot - it was a gift from my deceased mother - and I really didn't want the pot to burn. I'm sorry if I sounded condescending'.

This will usually soften your Ti offended *ntp, so good job on fixing the problem! But what if this doesn't seem to be the problem, and nothing changes? Now assume a Ne-Fe loop. This becomes a long term problem, but to confirm, here we go.

Basically, you have to stop digging for the reason they're mad at you and briefly affirm you love them or whatever. This won't help if the *ntp is in a loop, because they become extremely paranoid. You're almost certainly not going to fix this problem in one sitting. Go google the loop problem later and enjoy your new paranoid *ntp.

Cheering up

This advice is generic, use some discretion obvs

Do something with the *ntp. Like, take them out. This triggers their Ne, they love it. But them a drink or something to eat while you're out. This will usually work immediately.

Try discussing something with them. Might not work if they're really flat.

Watch TV or a movie with them. They like tech tbh

Feed them. Usually works, unless your cooking sucks.

Hug them. *ntps only pretend to hate this. Only works if you're close obvs.

Yell at them to snap out of it and cheer up. Extreme, but often works for entps who are in self pitying Fi Trickster moods. Don't actually tell btw. Just remind them pity parties are pointless and illogical.

Compliment the *ntp, or do something thoughtful like writing them a letter. Always be genuine!

Give the *ntp a project. Not a chore. Ask them to build an Ikea thing or something haha.

Only leave the *ntp alone once these steps have failed. No matter how many times they ask, if you can get them to do any of those things with you, they secretly want to be fixed. If they absolutely refuse to do any of those things, leave them alone and be quiet. They'll come out when they're ready. And don't finish with step 6. Then they'll think you're mean and angry at them. Always compliment sandwich 6.

If your entp (specifically) refuses to cheer up after an extended period of time, they might be using Fi Trickster... Or they could be legit depressed, try to know the signs. If they're not actually depressed, you can go on and compliment sandwich 6 again, a little harsher this time. If you trigger a Si crying melt down you fixed them, good job 👏 Otherwise, send your little entp to the doctor 😷

If your intp (specifically) refuses to cheer up after an extended period of time, they could be in Fi Demon and are likely depressed. If you can't get them to the doctor cos they're being stubborn, you can follow internet suggestions and try fostering their low Fe - it'll help get them out of Fi if they're not actually depressed. This means basically treating them like a soft little *nfj baby for an extended period of time.

Emergency Reset

You'll know if you need to do this when either *ntp is SPONTANEOUSLY crying or when intp is looking wide eyes like they're crying on the inside. This is a severe Si grip and they're basically completely overwhelmed. Tl;dr = trigger Ne, but handle Si first.

Sit down, hold *ntps hands if you can and look into their eyes. Ask them what's wrong and if you can help. Follow through with these steps in addition to anything they say 🙃

Check your *ntps vital Si signs - make sure they've been eating and drinking. Force them to take a food and drink break if they haven't. Encourage them to take a power nap. Encourage them to take a 10 minute walk. Encourage them to shower and get cosy if it's later in the day (which it usually is tbh).

Give the *ntp a game plan. For example, if your entp has left some project till the last minute, help them organise the steps they need to get through to complete the task.

Ask the *ntp if they'd like you to do some of their work while they Si recharge (walk, eat, nap, etc). Don't do too much, or they'll be Ti offended.

After the Si recharge, encourage the *ntp to decrease their work load. Think outside the box about ways they can do this - it triggers their Ne and makes them feel back in control of life. 😊

Basically, mildly parent your *ntp for about an hour and they'll perk up. This works every time, because *ntps in grips or loops don't have melt downs this obvious 😂

Tf happened between y'all???

Around September of last year, a few months after I had started talking to Sara, Jin began getting weirdly possessive of her. There’s more to it on Sara’s end, but I’m just gonna talk about what I personally saw and felt during this whole ordeal.

Before she had even moved here, she started hounding Sara about feeling “left out” and how she felt bad because Sara was spending more time with me. And that’s not a problem in and of itself. Sometimes when someone gets a new friend that you don’t know, you get a little insecure. I understand that. I reached out to her during that time, trying to be friends, trying to find any common ground so that we could talk too. Did it make a difference? Nope. Instead she started getting more and more demanding of Sara’s time. If Sara didn’t message her every day, multiple times a day, then Sara or I would receive a guilt-trippy message about how lonely she felt and how she had no one to talk to (which btw, was very untrue since she suddenly has all these friends coming out of the woodwork). It was incredibly stressful for us over here bc it seemed like no matter how much we tried to balance school/work/errands and talking to Jin, it was never enough for her. Even when we explained exactly what we were doing on the daily (ex: cleaning the garage, going the vet, exams and deadlines), she would still try and make us feel bad about not being able to message her. With Jin it’s always, “I understand, but–” And you wanna know what it always boiled down to? Her feelings being more important than ours.

We figured maybe it’d be better when she moved here because then it’d be easier to talk and we could actually go out and do things together. That was not the case. Up until now, she had been making vague posts about feeling sad and whatnot that we felt were related to the situation with us but we were ignoring them in favor of starting fresh. You wanna know what she did like the day after she got here? Another vague post. So obviously we knew she was writing about us. But it was early in the move, so an adjustment period is to be expected. She’d told Sara that she didn’t have a place to put her computer, so we wanted to do something nice for her and went halfies on a dresser/desk that we then hand-sanded and painted ourselves. Lotta money and weeks of effort went into making that gift for her. Did it make a difference? Nope. She was still complaining about us excluding her to other people.

We soon found out that it didn’t matter how hard we tried to make her feel welcome and included. I would try very hard to keep conversations going with the three of us but it was like pulling teeth. Jin always seemed disengaged and would give me very little to go off. Still, we tried. And yet, it was little more than a week after she had moved here when things got real bad. I remember the three of us were on the couch (she had this really bad habit of physically jamming herself between me and Sara whenever we were in the living room, would always end up partially sitting on my leg and forcing me to move away), just sitting and watching a vine compilation. No one was talking, Sara was working on a drawing and I was doing homework. And yet she still stormed off into her room because we weren’t talking to her like what??? We were busy! Like she could literally see with her own two eyes that we were busy but didn’t seem to matter, all that mattered was that we weren’t paying attention to her. She ended up sending me a message saying that she wanted to talk, so I went into the room and let her vent. I tried to comfort her, tried suggesting maybe we all do something with our characters together like an AU and that seemed to cheer her up. When we came out of the room to tell Sara, she was gone. After that, I didn’t see Sara for two entire days. She locked herself in her room for two whole days, because the whole atmosphere in the house with Jin was that bad. It’s not my place to talk about what Sara did in the time she was locked in her room, but understand this: when I say this situation caused people pain, I mean it. Y’all wanna know just how bad it was? Sara has mentioned to me that this whole thing with Jin was eerily similar to her relationship with her abusive mother. And you wanna know the real kicker? When confronted with this information, Jin literally admitted that she knew she was doing a lot of the same toxic things that Sara’s mom does!

This sort of emotional manipulation from Jin went on for months. Sara and I would try and talk to each other, only to have Jin sit there looking sad in an effort to make us feel bad. It got to the point that whenever she would come out of her room, Sara and I would just stop talking to each other altogether. And before anyone asks, “well why didn’t you tell her how you felt”, here’s the thing– WE DID. We had a series of house meeting where we would try to bring up all our concerns and issues but whenever we would tell Jin that something she was doing was hurting us, she would just blame it on depression (which Sara and I both struggle with and/or take medication for!) and then proceed to not change a single thing.

But because the wrongdoings here extend beyond just our personal relationship with her and are way too much for just one ask, I’m gonna summarize some of the many other things she did while she was here:

- Didn’t pay a single month of rent in the four months she lived here- Spent all her money on video games and con stuff in the first two weeks of living here so we ended up having to buy everything for her including groceries, meals when we went out, cat food, cat litter, etc.- Would use things like Sara’s makeup and my mugs without asking, take communal things into her room so we could never find them or use them- Continued to make “vague” posts that clearly alluded to living here with us and badmouth us to other people even while we tried to make her happy- Would pull Sara’s boyfriend aside just to complain about us while we were LITERALLY in the other room- Would constantly touch Sara and I even though we’d clearly stated that we didn’t like being touched- Only started looking for a job months after she had moved here and had been living for free and not contributing- Bailed on us during the con when she had promised that she was gonna help us run the booth- Since she only cared about characters, we tried to create a new story line that could include her but instead she just pulled Chris aside on Christmas to complain about us- Was never thankful for all the things we did for her, including: paying for housing and food, paying for her cat’s things, paying for her therapy, paying for bus rides and giving her rides to and from places, any gifts we got her, taking her to Disney Springs for something only she wanted to do. God, she didn’t even really look happy when Sara made those Sinner and Lucy body pillows. There was just no pleasing her. Nothing we did was ever good enough.

Hi, it's almost summer time and I plan on getting a full time (8 hours a day) job from June 1st until maybe mid-August. Here's the thing: I really want a 1996-1998 BMW Z3 1.9L. I want this car more than anything else and I'm willing to work my a$$ off if that's what it takes. But every time I talk about it to my parents they discourage me, by saying I could never afford the insurance and that it's just a dream. I have $500 in the bank and I plan on selling my dirt bike for about $1200 bringing me up to about $1700 that I already have. I want to find a 4 cylinder Z3 for around $7000 or less and make a down payment on it (I don't know how much) and make payments for 36 months. Is there any way I could afford this? I am willing to do whatever I can to afford it. And what job pays the best? Like a restaurant or grocery store or something else? And what could I do when school starts back? I was thinking getting a job after school for 2 or 3 hours a day. Any suggestions on all this? Thank you so much.

The Snowbird Lifestyle: Healthy Anti-Aging Solution or Horrifying Misadventure?

By Crabby McSlacker So what's a snowbird? (Besides, apparently, a ski resort in Utah?) I'll offer one definition of a snowbird: a species of silver-crested North American, usually of advancing years, that migrates annually for the winter from colder northern climates to warmer southern ones. Best known for upsetting local ecosystems and annoying year-round inhabitants. Regular readers may be aware that my wife (aka "The Lobster") and I are a couple of those dreaded snowbirds. Yet: we are not all that old. Nor, we hope, are we all that annoying. And it's not just us: Snowbirds seem to be getting younger. Maybe it's because more jobs are going virtual and it's not just for retirement anymore? Or it might be because new options that didn't exist 10 or 20 years ago can make it way more affordable and practical than it used to be. (Note: I'm talking about "snowbirding" because that's what people google the most common sort of seasonal migration. But this applies to other extended getaways too, like fleeing a torrid climate during summers, or spending months abroad every year in a country that's cheap and culturally enriching, or whatever.) So if you're curious about the Snowbird lifestyle, either because it sounds vaguely appealing, or alternatively, because it sounds so hideously disruptive that reveling in the details will make you smugly grateful that you live only in one place like a normal person--some thoughts below.

Our Snowbirding experience? We flee wintertime in Provincetown Massachusetts every year, and have had a blast living part time in San Diego for seven years. But now we're selling our condo this spring, because we want to mix it up a little more. We did a trial run last winter, renting out our SD digs and spending it Austin Texas instead. Way fun!

(And hell, since I have some left-over photos from then that I never blogged about, I'm going to go ahead and use 'em to break up the text so I don't have to write a whole ridiculously belated "healthy travels in Austin" post.)

Next winter, we're renting a place in St. Petersburg Florida. And the year after that... hmm. Mexico? Hawaii? New Zealand? Costa Rica? Who knows? Can you see how that sort of decision might be kinda fun to make?

But let's deal with the bad news first.

Hassles and Painful Realities: Not Everyone Can or Should be a Snowbird.

For one thing, plenty of people are quite happy where they are whatever the season! And so why mess with a good thing? Other folks who might enjoy snowbirding eventually can't even think about it now because of work, family obligations or financial constraints. I'm guessing, for example, most second grade teachers wouldn't take kindly to a parental note saying: "please excuse Tiffany's absence during December, January, February and March. She was busy learning to boogie-board in Daytona Beach." Nor for that matter would many bosses. But even those who are ready, willing and able to migrate will have to deal with quite a few costs, chores, and hassles:

Finding a place to rent or buy and Making Arrangements. (Extra difficult if you have pets, peculiarities, or Strong Opinions).

The cost of said place, whether rented or owned.

If it's not an easy driving destination, then transportation to and fro and a means to get around once there.

Enlisting someone to rent (if you're lucky) or housesit or check on your home while you're away.

Winterizing if it freezes where you live.

Packing Angst, plus shipping costs if you send boxes back and forth.

Mail forwarding (which, btw, the post office sucks at) and bill paying and possibly tax season, which becomes more complicated when things keep getting lost in the mail.

Schlepping or rebuying Things You Can Not Live Without.

If you own, then duplicate utilities, taxes, insurance, association fees plus a twin set of "what happens while we're gone" questions.

However, it all gets way easier as you get the hang of it.

So, anyone still game or did I scare y'all off?

Different Approaches to Snowbirding

A "second home" doesn't have to mean a huge new mortgage payment or a boring gated community full of eighty year olds riding around in golf carts. You can choose any sort of neighborhood that appeals!

In our Austin 'hood

Here are a few possibilities to think about, not all mutually exclusive:

Downsize your primary residence to something more economical to extract some extra cash to flee for part of the year.

Rent seasonally through VRBO or AirBnb or similar.

Buy a used RV and find a cheap warm place to park it.

If you live in a desirable urban area or an all-season destination (say, for example, you hail from NYC, San Diego, Boulder, DC, SF etc), consider renting out your own place while you're gone for a few months, or doing a house swap for free rent elsewhere.

Travel to countries where rents or second homes are cheaper.

Get together with friends or relatives and split a second home.

Buy a second place in a year-round rental area and rent it out monthly or weekly when you're not using it.

It helps to start fantasizing about what you might do years ahead of time, and making vacation visits and collecting data about neighborhoods, prices, cost of living, etc. A cross country road trip, if you can squeeze in the vacation time, is a great way to check out a bunch of options all at once.

Prefer a Second Home, or a Seasonal Adventure?

We know many people whose "second homes" are as every bit as integral to their lives as their primary residences. They build friendships and community over the years, and they establish routines and traditions that result in a sense of feeling truly "home" all year long, even as the settings change.

Alternatively, it's a big world! Keeping it flexible and mixing it up every year, exploring different cities or countries, gives an incredible sense of freedom and adventure.

Whether your intention is to settle somewhere for the long haul or not, you may want to consider renting a season before buying. Though hell, if you really know what you want, and see a screaming deal, then a quick decision can work too. But caution is advised.

Is Snowbirding Good for Your Health?

This is at least theoretically a health blog, so let's take a look at the healthy lifestyle angle. Did you know research proves that people who shift their primary residence between two or more places become physically and psychologically healthier as they age, and live much longer lives than their stationary peers? Really? Because I just made that up. I don't think there is any such research. (Though I did find an abstract for one Nordic study on second homes and health that basically seemed to say: we should study this). I don't actually think we should throw precious research money at this one. Not unless you have a ginormous grant that could randomly put people in groups and subsidize half of them, forcing them to move somewhere far away from bad weather whether they want to or not. Otherwise, how would you ever control for the probable fact that people drawn to snowbirding are a different sort of species of human to start with? People who might be more risk-tolerant, adventurous, financially secure, and in better health or they wouldn't consider taking it on? But common sense (and a little research) points to a few very likely health benefits for snowbirds. Physical: It's easier for most people to and get outdoors and exercise in a mild climate. Or, to get outdoors at all for that matter. (But stay tuned, we have a guest post coming up soon on winter exercise!) A research review appears to confirm this: physical activity tends to decline in winter. And the same goes for hot humid summers. An excerpt (citations omitted, boldface mine):

The data show that both men and women are more physically active during leisure time in the summer than in the winter. Moreover, it provides an analysis of the types of activities adopted by season. A 2–3-fold greater volume of walking for pleasure, the most prevalent type of activity for both men and women, was reported in spring-summer-fall seasons, compared with winter. In addition, outdoor activities such as gardening and lawn-mowing tended to replace indoor pastimes such as home exercise and bowling. Data from the Canadian Community Health Survey, Cycle 2.2 of more than 20,000 Canadians collected in 2004 revealed that the number of inactive respondents increased from 49% in summer to 64% in winter. Smaller studies, as well as those from other countries, and those concentrating on adolescents or children, tend to replicate these findings, with some exceptions. In areas of the United States with hot, humid summer weather, physical activity of children was in fact lower in summer than winter; a small study in the United Arab Emirates also suggested that extremely hot weather would decrease physical activity.

Dietary: I'm thinking warmer climates are more likely to have fresher, locally grown produce. At least that's been our experience. Also, it's a chance to get out of any dietary ruts you may have fallen into, shopping in different stores, trying new kinds of foods, exploring new takeout and restaurant options, which could in turn lead to new recipes. Many things I eat routinely now I sampled first Somewhere Else.

Psychological: Here is where I think there are the most benefits, at least for my strange little brain: Growth Mindset: There are a couple different ways to handle the aging process. Have you noticed that some people seem to get more open and adventurous as the decades pass? They become more broad-minded and adaptable, gain confidence, and become more willing to challenge themselves and less stressed when encountering the unexpected. The alternative approach? Retreat more and more to the familiar, the comfortable. Allow your world to keep getting smaller, you habits and opinions more entrenched. Find ways to avoid change whenever possible. I argue that as strategies for happiness, meaning, and life satisfaction the first approach rocks, and the second approach sucks. But "growing" instead of "shrinking" is not necessarily natural, at least for some of us anxious types. We have to actively work to stay in category One rather than get sucked into category Two. There are a multitude of ways to challenge yourself that are far less of a pain in the ass than packing up your life twice a year. Taking classes, volunteering, doing meet-ups, signing up for marathons, etc. But... having different worlds with different neighborhoods, resources, routines, possibilities, and adventures throws a whole lot of novelty in one package. And it's a package wrapped up with a pretty bow of lovely anti-depressing sunny weather! Snowbirding also requires some scheming and troubleshooting, which while not always fun, keeps those brain cells firing and beats the pants off sudoku or solitaire. Simplifying: As discussed above, snowbirding adds some complications to life. Yet counter-intuitively, it can lead to a Zen sort of reckoning about what's truly important to you, and how much less you need in your life than you thought you did. Most people we know who migrate like we do have, just like us, downsized in all sorts of ways. Not only in terms of real estate, but also personal possessions, financial entanglements, even relationships that no longer feel right, and other various commitments that seemed to be "costing" more than they were worth. Fresh eyes, with no need for an optometrist: A lesser known snowbird bonus: When you go back to your old home and neighborhood, one where you may have lived for decades, you see and appreciate all sorts of things you never noticed. It's like falling in love all over again!

And speaking of which: Relationship Enhancer: If you have a cherished spouse or life partner, sharing adventures adds a whole new dimension of bonding. Different settings bring out all kinds of new ways to appreciate their awesomeness!

On the other hand, if you accidentally married a whiner, a loser, a blowhard, a creep, a psycho, or a dickhead, and divorce isn't practical, you'll appreciate not being trapped in the same house with them during winter months. You can head outside and take up a new sport or simply walk as far, far away from them as you possibly can.

Health Challenges

OK, to be fair, there are some of these as well. Moving is considered a major stressor. And even if you're not starting from scratch every year, or are renting furnished places, there are still tons of little details and things that can go wrong. Along with the excitement of change comes uncertainty and a need for flexibility. Exposing yourself to this can either be a "growth opportunity" or a pain-in-the-ass source of stress, depending on your circumstances and mindset. (But consider: I'm more than a bit of a worrywart, and I cope just fine, and find it well worth the tradeoffs.) I'll repeat too: it gets way easier over time. Another consideration: if you have chronic health conditions that require doctors visits and prescription refills, you have to make sure you are going somewhere you can take care of these things, particularly if you are considering international destinations. Wishful thinking and denial are not good replacements for regular medical care. (But snowbirding, unlike snowboarding, is far less likely to send you to the emergency room.)
