you guys ever notice how in his dialogue when he's in bertie's presence, jeeves uses quotations and references constantly, but in his THOUGHTS during "bertie changes his mind," he doesn't use any? this is obviously because he doesn't care if we the audience know he knows shakespeare, but he will languish and die if he doesn't get to dazzle bertie with his wit and knowledge every five seconds

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Yet another forgotten Lisa Snart Appreciation Week episode exploring if Barry and Lisa had a rapport. 

Lisa looked around the room. It's high ceilings sparkled with hanging lights made of thousands of diamonds, it floors gleamed with freshly waxed marble tiles, golden plaques on the wall thanking it's donators.

She wondered if she would visit this place every day if she were rich.

Probably not, the people here were beyond snobby and whined about how the caviar was grilled not slightly roasted. Maybe she would visit occasionally just for the novelty and the fact that she was rich enough to get into a country club legally.

Unlike now, she was under the name of Mrs. Smith-the most generic name ever- waiting for her husband, Mr. Smith aka the Flash.

Cisco had asked for her help with a mission of some sort against a Man in an Iron Mask. She had no idea who the hell he was and why he chose such a weird costume choice and why she should care, but he begged and then offered to turn the other way the next time the Rogues were on a stealing spree. Lenny would be furious about her helping them, but he would totally thank her for the pass on stealing sprees.

Plus how could she refused the opportunity to see who the Flash really was!

She stroke her blond wig, self-consciously and checked her compact mirror to make sure it was straight. You never knew when disguises started to go wonky in the middle of the plan.

A thin, Caucasian man with brown hair and sweet eyes approached the table, and looked for his place card. She recognized him as Cisco's friend that he always hanged out with at the bar and at the Lab. Barry something.

He was the Flash?

But but he was so, so not muscley or intimidating and he was a scientist. Well that explained how he was always able to understand everything Cisco and that doctor girl was saying.

"Hello sweetie, I think your place card is here next to me, your darling wife." Lisa purred, and waved the card with her fingers.

Barry's face morphed into one of confusion, then realization dawned on him and he hissed.

"What are you doing here, Snart?"

"Calm down Speedy. Cisco asked me to do this. Guess your uptight doctor wouldn't pretty enough to convince people she was rich. Can't blame you."

"Caitlin is very pretty and only couldn't do it because we need her at the base to set up the cameras. More importantly, why did Cisco asked you of all people?" Barry shook his head worriedly, "I swear I'm going to kill him if this fails." "What?" Lisa pouted, but with a sincerely offended tone "I'm an expert at these kind of things, you should be thankful I'm helping you."

"Hardly." Barry muttered, but he sighed and went to business mode.

"Here's the exact plan. You are only going to act like my wife and not make a big scene, while I look for the Iron Mask. Got it. Nothing else."

Lisa rolled her eyes. The Flash was almost as bad her brother. She wasn't going to ruin the mission. She meant what she said about being good at these kinds of cons. And she hated the fact that he thought just because she was who she was that she would be incapable of pulling off this kind of mission.

They sat next to each other, glancing around the room in silence when a elderly waiter approached them.

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith, in behalf of Central City's Wildhills Country Club I would like to congratulate you on your 10th year anniversary."

"Uh why I'm yeah thanks." Barry stammered.

"Yes thank you so much!" Lisa swooped in, clutching Barry's arm lovingly, "Barrykins and I are super happy we made it this far. Right sweetie-pie" Lisa grinned, devilishly at him as he looked at her in surprise

"Yes, snoopi-poo and I can't imagine our lives without each other." Barry chimed in, squeezing her tightly as she cringed at the name.

"When I hear her snore at night, it's the most musical sound in the world. It's like an orchestra" Barry he continued with an overly-perky voice.

"And when honey buns buns trips over the rug and breaks our Ming vase, I can't believe I married such a cute klutz" Lisa countered an even happier voice, then turned his face to nuzzle noses.

The waiter gave them a strange look, before saying "Good, good tell me when you've placed your order" and walked off. "Snoopi-poo!" Lisa cried, punching his shoulder.

"You started it! Barrykins really?" Barry snorted.  "We've been "married" for 10 years I was trying to make it convincing.” Lisa protested. 

They settled back to easy silence and ordered their food. Barry looking around the room, discreetly as Lisa eyed the jewelry on the patrons. The ruby necklace would look great with her pink peasant blouse that she got. Maybe if she could just accidentally trip her way.... Wait what was she thinking? This place is full of rich guys!

She could just flirt and adultery her way into getting a nice ring or two.

"Everybody! Everybody!" A man dressed in a tux, whom Lisa assumed was the manager, stood up clinking his glass.

"Since it's almost Valentine's Day I would like to call up some of our favorite couples to talk about their marriage. Mr and Mrs. Loomis, our golden couple reaching their 62 anniversary."

Lisa ignored the couples getting up to talk and she could Barry was getting increasingly bored and fidgety.

She looked around, she doubted that the man they were chasing would come with his Iron Mask on so what the hell was he looking around. The room was only filled with elderly WASPS, she swore they were the only couple under 60 there.

She leaned over to him, and whispered "I think we should check in the back rooms like storage. That's always wear Lenny, Mick and I go when we tried to infiltrate these kinds of things. No one notices extra stuff in storage." "That could work,” Barry mumbled.

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith!" The manager boomed "Come in up here!" Lisa and Barry looked at each other in panic. 

“Maybe it's another Smith couple. It's such a common name." Lisa gave a dry laugh.  But the whole room was staring at them. Of course. They shuffled slowly to the center of the room and plastered fake grins.

“What can I say about our marriage" Barry stalled "What can I say? Um it's been a struggle....uh yeah. But we always pull through." Lisa groaned under her breath, this was bad.

"What he means is that.." Lisa added, searching for something to say about love.

"We, we are always there for each other. When you're scared, you run, when you can't run you crawl. When you can't crawl, you find someone to carry you. That's my husband. If had I dare to choose, I'd choose him over all the men over all the planets the night sky could show me."

The crowd clapped, and Barry stared at her in shock.

"Thank you" he called too loudly into the microphone. She brushed past the manager and they ran offstage.

"Here you go" she handed him a set of keys she swiped from the manager. Lenny had taught her a long time ago how to pick pocket by just brushing past someone. Less conspicuous.

"Wow, that was fast" Barry said, looking over the keys as they existed the room. "Wait up" A voice called out, running behind them.

"Barry why are you pretending to be Mr. Smith," A Hispanic man asked, and she recognized him. Cisco's piano brother. Wait Cisco's brother!

He seemed to recognize her too "Why are you with Captain Cold's sister! Do you know she's Captain Cold's sister? I'm liable to call the police on you" He threatened.  

She placed a hand over his mouth "If you call the police, I might have to touch you on your special part" She whispered.  "What kind of threat is that?" Piano brother hissed, when she took off her hand. “Barry hand me your phone, no actually just dial 911 you have no idea what weapons she could be.." Lisa kneed him in the crotch.

He collapsed to the ground, she grabbed Barry's arm and ran out, after she stopped to get her coat and hobo bag that concealed her gun and he quickly changed to his costume.

"You didn't have to kneed him there" Barry walked quickly as they tried to look for the back entrance that might lead to the storage room.

"Collateral damage besides Cisco told me about him. He sounds like an asshole" She muttered. 

"He may exhibit some asshole-like qualities but you just don't tell a guy you're going to touch his special place and then hit it." Barry protested.  "Maybe you don't.” Lisa grinned as Barry opened a door hidden behind a bunch of well-coiffed shrubs.

"And you watch Firefly?" Barry asked excitedly. Lisa froze. She chose those quotes for her impromptu anniversary speech because she didn't think anyone watched that show.

"Maybe?" Lisa stammered.  "I love that show! I can kill you.."

"With my mind." Lisa finished, and scowled at his enthusiastic, mocking grin. She couldn't believe she shared the same guilty pleasure as the Flash.

"I just enjoy it from time to time" Lisa defended herself "It's not like I dress up for Halloween or anything" She smirked at the sheepish look that crawled onto his face. "Oh Speedster," Lisa shook her head. 

Barry sparked back to life though, and started asking questions "What did you think of Walsh's death in the movie?"

"I don't consider the movie canon." Lisa replied.  "Yeah, I mean it was totally unnecessary. Oh and what is with River not wearing shoes?"

Lisa glared at him. 

"We're getting friendly, this is weird." Barry said "We should stop." Lisa muttered "Right now. Let's stop right now."

They scoured the back rooms of the country club and unlike the inside of the spacious place, it was dank and dark and musty as a cave. "Why would the Iron Mask be here anyway?" Lisa asked.  "Don't know his plan exactly, but Cisco heard from Dante that some guy found an Iron Mask under the piano one night here at the club so we figured we'd check out if he or anyone associated with him is hiding here.... You should probably go now."

Lisa sneered at him, and grabbed him by the collar. "Bar- Flashykins,” she growled between clenched teeth "I can help you so would you be a sweetheart and not act like a sexist version of Lenny. Cuz honey I am useful in this kind of thing" She shoved him forward and the two continued on marching.

Suddenly a man jumped in front of them.

"Halt!" he said, brandishing a boa staff.

The Flash sprang into action, speeding around him and throwing punches. Lisa wanted to help but with Barry moving around, she might shoot him instead. But Iron Mask had a trick up his sleeve. He produced a set of handcuffs and cuffed Barry to a near he pillar.

Leaving it between her and him. She didn't like the odds. Though she had fought quite a few big men, she always knew what to expect of those types with the added help of her brother and Mick. But this one she had no idea, and didn't know what other weapons he hid.

She the best trick she had always done, she fake-fainted.

Flash looked in absolute shock, "Lisa" he yelled.

The Iron Mask hardly seemed to notice but ran past her to the door. She turned around, aimed her gun and plastered his feet to the floor with the gold liquid

The with an easy swing she punched him to the ground.

She swung her hips lazily as she helped him get rid of the cuffs using her gun once more, and cracking the gold and cuff off of him.  Flash once more gaped at him. Yeah, she could get use to this face. "That was great!"

"And you thought you could do this without me" Lisa smiled herself at Scarlet's enthusiasm.

"Fine, I was wrong Snart. It takes more than one to deal with villains. There's no I in team." Barry grinned broadly at the cliche. 

"There maybe no I in Team but there's one in my name and that's the rule I go by" Lisa reminded him sensing the friendliness. "Speaking of I's. Here's a plan. You shove this guy into the car. I pick up Mr and Mrs. Smith's dinner, their complimentary coupons to the spa which are so going to be mine and that jewelry case that I saw being auctioned by the front desk"

"You do know there's no jewelry inside the jewelry case right?" "I know that" She snapped.  "Wait, as a "married" couple we should compromise about this" Barry smirked as he lifted Iron Mask into the trunk of the car.

Lisa stared at him, warily.

"I'm dropping you off and we are going to be comparing Firefly notes on the way there.”  Lisa smirked back, "Sure thing Barrykins"

4) Who is someone they’ve hurt?

who hasn't he tho

while i can't give an exhaustive list, i think the pirate crew that looked after him from mid-childhood to at least his mid-teens or so was probably pretty hurt by the events that took place. my impression is that something happened that accidentally triggered Vhox's feral state, and he killed someone he absolutely did not mean to in the crossfire, which caused all sorts of uproar amidst the crew (which was thereafter divided on their perspectives of Vhox / what they should do in the aftermath), and Vhox cut ties with all of them in the process of bailing -- even those people who he had formed genuine bonds with and who wanted to support him in the fallout. Vhox refused to let them do so, too afraid of the prospect of reaching back out only for something else to go wrong, because emotional investment is scary and fuck all them, anyway, #yolo, he’s fine on his own. it has nothing at all to do with the fact that the entire thing aggravated all of Vhox's fears of abandonment and being a dangerous monster in all of the worst ways. nope.

beyond that, this boy tends to hurt a lot of people in his proximity without necessarily meaning to, so it's likely that Rin suffers a lot for being tied to him, too -- but at least that's something that he ends up trying to work on. he plays best with people he feels like he can't hurt, for some reason or another. Charlotte works well for this, because she's connected to him in a way he can't deny or really run from (as his blood sister), she's got the same problem he's got going on with the feral anomaly, and she's also a strong fighter in her own right, before one considers that she's got the thick skin and experience to recognize a lot of Vhox's shit before Vhox himself might.

9) What is something that would break them emotionally?

accidentally killing someone he really cares about. (i mean, that would probably break most people, but it’s a very present possibility in his mind.) he's so afraid of doing this that he's already more or less sequestered himself away from people beyond very surface-level relationships, so killing someone like Rin would probably push him so far off the deep end that he would either submit to whatever his blood family wants for him (bad news), or completely abandon any future prospect of emotional investment in people while simultaneously discarding his moral compass (also bad news). in the latter case, essentially he would get so stuck in the idea that he is a monster and destined to hurt people that he would stop attempting to moderate his behavior to avoid doing that, thus doing absolutely whatever reckless, harmful, and hedonistic shit he wanted until he either killed himself by "unfortunate happenstance" or was killed by someone else.

12) What is the fastest way to upset them?

see previous question for an extreme case, see following question for a less extreme case. outside of those two situations, some other things that would probably upset him:

obviously wealthy people looking down their nose at or otherwise mistreating less fortunate individuals. bonus points if they were at all capable of helping said less fortunate individuals instead. seeing someone who is obviously struggling and in need of help try to steal food at the market or lift some gil off of a rich merchant, only to be caught and dragged off by the Yellowjackets, really bothers him in a bad way. encountering the mere suggestion of child neglect also upsets him (even if that just amounts to a kid being left unattended on the street). these are both sore spots because they hit close to home, so to speak.

people (most especially authority / law enforcement) who try to control or tell him what he can’t do also rub him the wrong way, although “upset” in this case looks more like becoming suddenly very argumentative / intentionally inflammatory with them, a lot of the time, unless it’s a situation where Vhox would quickly be in over his head for not keeping his mouth shut (and, admittedly, sometimes even then). he has a fairly childish knee-jerk reaction to people treating him negatively to give them even less reason to like him, possibly as an unconscious mechanism to soften the blow of the rejection.

13) What is something that makes them uncomfortable?

talking about gushy uwu feelsy stuff is one thing. he's also not great at commiserating about trauma. if his ever comes up, he's likely to be playing it off with humor or otherwise talking pretty flippantly about it, and if someone else talks to him about theirs, the best they're likely to get is an underwhelming "that's rough, buddy" sort of response. it's not even that he outright doesn't care -- he's just really uncomfortable processing those things, and rolling up his sleeves to have a deep heart-to-heart is a lot more emotionally taxing than having a morbid laugh and moving on to something else.

he's sort of uncomfortable around kids, too. he likes (some of) them and thinks they're cute, but there's always a part of him that's worried that he's going to fuck a kid up somehow, either by saying or doing something wrong, or, gods forbid, something happens to trigger his feral anomaly and he hurts them. that's one of his worst fears.

22) How indecisive are they?

he's very much a "do shit first, ask questions later" kind of guy, so all in all he's pretty decisive -- at least in the moment. if you start asking him to plan things, or where he thinks he's gonna be in 10 years (the answer: facedown in a gutter), etc. then he might give you an answer, but it's liable to change at a moment's notice, so don't put too much stock in it.

23) What do they want most in life?

if you asked him, he'd probably tell you he wants the freedom to do whatever he wants whenever he wants to. part of him is always hung up on the idea of a lucrative job that will pay him so much money that he doesn't have to worry about not having enough for a place to sleep or for a good gourmet meal or whatever else strikes his fancy in a given moment; unfortunately, he's not very wise with money, so even when he does get a moderate chunk of it he can end up spending it all on an evening of lavish entertainment and a lot of booze. he's gotten better at this over time, because experience has taught him that being completely, utterly broke generally leads to an empty stomach and no roof over your head, which is not fun.

the truth is that he needs, and in his heart of hearts wants, stability. he's been absent stability for much of his life (whether that mean stable relationships, stable employment, housing, etc.), and a part of him sorely desires that, even if he's likewise afraid of the idea of being emotionally tied to someone he might hurt (thanks to that pesky "feral" genetic anomaly) or someone who has the power to hurt or abandon him.

29) What do they do to relax?

smoke fogweed, drink alcohol

Vhox is the sort who finds the (calmer) ocean soothing, be it listening to the waves crashing on the shore or lying on a dock that gets rocked by the waves a little. it's an easy shortcut to relaxing him.

33) Do they have a signature accessory?

do weapons count? Vhox is highly uncomfortable without some kind of weapon on his person, be it a gun or at least one knife. every other feature of his attire would be subject to change, i think; he can rotate through clothing surprisingly quickly as a result of damaging it during jobs or whatever other nonsense he gets up to, and although i can see him owning some other accessories at times (necklaces, etc.) it would rarely be anything he’s particularly attached to, and so would be willing to take it off and sell it if he needed a little extra gil.

i finished my second watch of bojack s6 p1 and here’s a predictably massive post of some thoughts/observations abt it

spoilers under the cut obviously

the “fuck” of the season definitely came in a moment that i didn’t expect, but i rly liked how it was used. like, it was a callback to when gina dropped it in the last season –– something that traumatized her vs a reaction to her PTSD symptoms. a lot of people seem unhappy w it but i think it’s more powerful than people are giving it credit for being

the gatsby reference in e3 rly brought to mind that there are, like, a lot of gatsby tie-ins w this show and i never rly pasted them together mentally bc of the ubiquity of the “rich guy is utterly depressed and alone” trope. like, the imagery related to the pool, the shallow parties, the yellow car, the spacious but empty house, the billboards staring him down as he drives when he’s hallucinating in s5. charlotte/daisy being a weak parallel in that he had feelings for her when they were younger, held onto them for years, only for her to be married when they reconnect, but it’s worth mentioning that the glow stick balloons were green.

someone on reddit pointed out that jameson’s baby in e1 had physical traits associated w fetal alcohol syndrome. like, short, upturned nose, eyes that are far apart, and low ears. it’s hard to say if it’s intentional, but he’s drawn w a lot more detail than a lot of the other babies i’ve seen in the show. if it’s purposeful, like, that’s amazing attention to detail

i liked how the season opened on a planetarium flashback, because honestly, the immediate aftermath of sarah lynn’s death is definitely kind of glossed over in s3 when it initially happens. and though i suppose the added information isn’t terribly surprising (like him lying abt the events that lead up to her overdose and minimizing his own role in it as much as possible), it did make me wonder why i hadn’t thought abt it before

bojack rly does show signs of serious growth in the 6th season and it’s cool to finally see him move forward w/o simultaneously backsliding in other ways. a lot of his good actions in previous seasons were only rly things that benefitted him. and there are a lot of examples of it, but i think the one that stuck out to me the most was w his therapist. when he fell off the wagon, it’d have been rly easy for bojack to look the other direction and walk away like we’ve seen him do before. realistically, he has no real incentive to care for doctor champ’s wellbeing if he’s no longer staying at pastiches, but he checks him into rehab anyway, and when doctor champ throws his insecurities in his face to be hurtful, he immediately identifies it for the petty jab it is instead of letting it fuel his negative thoughts and using it as an excuse to dive into self-destructive behavior. honestly e6 was the emotional high water mark of part 1, even though it wasn’t the kind of gut punch that the dramatic, narrative focused episodes of bojack tend to be

i’m glad that the writers finally /did/ something w todd that made him feel like an actual character instead of jst a device for the comedy part of the show. i used to watch this show w a friend and we always used to say that todd had very little depth given the amount of screen time he occupies and seeing them move away from that was refreshing. his struggle w jorge is very relatable as someone whose parents have always pushed me towards things i didn’t sincerely want based on their expectations and desires for me vs my actual opinions of what success and happiness would look like for myself. but, on the other side of the coin, there’s finally a little bit of confrontation of the fact that todd’s erratic behavior and shenanigans are very taxing things for people who care abt him to deal w. and todd is rly the only character who’s somehow defied the show’s formula in that he never faces accountability for the things he does. like, he’s enabled PB’s impulsivity many times and drove him to bankruptcy, care of PB Livin’, and it’s a detail in the show that’s never truly been acknowledged or talked abt at all. he fucked PC over when he wouldn’t follow through w his sham marriage to courtney, and it was met w a cheesy speech from her abt how he needs to follow his heart and do what he thinks is right. it always struck me as a weird oversight, and to finally see someone take him to task for how taxing his behavior can be was refreshing. his only other “depth” was the asexual stuff and honestly? that is stupid and does not actually count for anything

if it didnt warm your heart when PC named her daughter ruthie then you dnt have one. i wasn’t as invested in her narrative as i’d have liked to be, but its good when PC is happy and that’s what everyone wants

IM SO GLAD JUDAH IS BACK. also i still hope he and PC end up together (and maybe she has a viable pregnancy this time w him a la sex and the city charlotte but that’s a little too cornball sappy for this show). generally rly enjoyed how characters from previous seasons were incorporated this time around. but i dnt want them to bring back vincent adultman jst to spite everyone who’s always saying “bring back vincent adultman”

pickles is still my least favorite character even tho the surprise wedding episode was probably the one i found the funniest. realistically i wanna see things work out for PB but his relationship w her is obviously not the move for him, and she’s also the worst

i like diane and guy together, they have rly good chemistry but i also have a bad feeling abt where things are headed w them. he seems ambivalent abt how principled she is and the scene where his son comes to the party and he makes her leave when he could have jst introduced her as a party guest if it even needed to happen at all... there was jst something off abt it. like you can definitely see the cracks in the foundation already and it’s disappointing

the scene btwn PB and bojack where bojack says to him “but i understand that feeling of needing to bottle up your guilt, not burden other people w it. you think you’re protecting them from your toxicity, you convince yourself that you’re being selfless, but it comes out in other ways and it infects everything” hit close to home bc it reminded me of someone i used to bond over this show w and like... whew

i rly love how the dominoes are being set up w the reporters (even tho their his girl friday shtick got old fast) bc the way things are culminating, the story getting out is liable to expose bojack for everything. if they approach penny and she talks to them abt what happened, she’s liable to tell them that bojack and sarah lynn went to ohio to find her in the time before sarah lynn overdosed, and the pictures that her classmates took of them could establish a time frame. he was in new mexico when he was supposed to be filming secretariat, and that knowledge could lead to them finding out that he’d been digitally replaced in the movie. when this information gets out, it’s very likely that gina will dogpile onto it w the truth abt what happened on the set of philbert, since trying to conceal her ptsd is actively hurting her acting career bc of the reputation she’s developing as a problem actress, and even though she dznt *want* to be “that girl that got choked by bojack horseman”, she won’t have a choice if she can’t get jobs otherwise. i guess there’s always a chance that penny and charlotte won’t talk to them, but now that hollyhock knows about what happened in new mexico, either way his personal life will be hurt by this. i’m not sure what’ll happen to him professionally, since there’s a recurring point the series has been making w famous people never being held fully culpable for their negative actions, and it’s a dicey thing for them to approach w a character that many viewers find sympathetic without ending on some myopic note abt cancel culture (whether intentionally or by popular interpretation) but im excited

i also hate how my obsessive watching and rewatching of this show meant that the intended pete repeat reveal (like, you’re not supposed to recognize him until his identity becomes obvious through the prom night story) was sort of compromised for me bc i recognized his voice and the second he introduced himself, i placed him IMMEDIATELY but it was still such a great scene. it’s the most tense i remember feeling when watching and an all around great cliffhanger

the final line of e7 comes off as some rly grim foreshadowing–– “it looks like you found solace in our show. stay if you’d like. in 30 minutes, we start over”. but it’s such an incredible line in context. my god, i fucking love this show, you guys

Summary: Germany in 1937 was a hard place for anyone “different”. Dan just wanted to live his life, fall in love, and die surrounded by family, but his particular community was too “different”. I was anxious and afraid, as I had been for so long already, but now I was also venturing out alone into the perilous night for the first time since the raid began. There was nowhere to hide until I got to the alley. I was in the open, exposed, liable to arrest at any moment for any reason an officer could think of. It still astounds me to think of how lucky I was that night...

In the poorer quarter of the city, the government never bothered to use taxes to pay for street lamps, especially when that money could be used for the rich, or for the military, or really anyone but the people who needed it the most. As a result, there was very little light on the street. Only a few lamps were lit, but they were old and far-between, the burning kerosene providing no resistance against the blanket of darkness. Pockets of shadows remained nearly entirely unbroken, and it made it nearly impossible to see a threat before it was too late.

It made Dan walk slowly, his eyes darting around anxiously for any signs of trouble.

He vaguely saw what he assumed was a police officer (surely no one else would be out here this late) walking towards the bar on the opposite side of the street and felt his hands tremble violently in his pockets, but he kept his head down and tried to maintain an indifferent air.

Just keep walking, Dan. Don’t look him in the eyes because then he’ll really notice you. Remember what Phil said- no one will know you were in the bar unless you’re captured, so don’t do anything to get yourself captured.

The officer turned the corner to enter the bar, and Dan let out a shaky breath, some of the tension in his shoulders releasing.

See? You’re fine. Keep going. This is the second street here, I think.

Dan carefully looked back the way he’d come to confirm how far he’d gone.

Definitely the second street. Only two more after this, and then you’ll see the alley where you can wait for Phil. You can do this.

The farther he walked, the closer Dan got to a chance to hide again.The farther he walked, the closer Dan got to whatever the next step in his journey was.

Would he go home? Return to his life as if nothing had happened? Would that even be possible?

But hiding was almost a comforting thought. It had worked well enough for him so far tonight, after all. On the other hand, it was still just as terrifying as the rest of the night had been. When he hid in the alley, he would have nothing to do but sit and wait for some cop to come save him yet again.

How long has it been? Three minutes? Five? When Phil said it would be fifteen minutes, did he mean from the time I get to the alley, or from the time I left? What do I do if he’s not there in fifteen minutes?

What do I do if he is there?

As Dan crossed the third street, he felt himself begin to dread arriving at the alley. He wanted to slow his pace so he would arrive as late as possible, but he also knew that the longer he was out in the open, the more likely he was to be caught. But the alley meant there was nothing he could do but wait. It meant he was at the mercy of Phil’s schedule, which didn’t seem all that stable at the moment.

Why should I even trust him? He got me out of the bar, sure, but what will he do with me next? He knows my face and my first name, but nothing else, so maybe I should just go home. But he must know something I don’t. Maybe there are officers sweeping this area of the city and they arrest anyone they see.

Dan had seen raids before. Usually they happened during the day, and it was usually a raid on the Jews, but the police always seemed to set up a perimeter to question anyone who left the area during the raid. It was obvious they were looking for anyone who might try and sneak away. Dan was terrified that without Phil, he’d be caught at one of these perimeters. At least with Phil, there would be that extra level of protection for him.

Dan felt the frustration and fear building in him again. There was nothing he could do to save himself without following the instructions of a police officer, of all people. Someone who was supposed to arrest him was somehow the only man that Dan could trust right now, but there was no evidence that Dan should trust him. And if Dan didn’t trust this officer, he was likely to be arrested, anyway. Surely, no one would believe he hadn’t been at the bar if they caught him in the perimeter alone.

Nothing felt like a good option, but Dan had to stick with the one that had proven reliable so far.

He crossed the fourth street, and began looking for an alley.

A few meters away from the curb, an opening appeared to Dan’s right.

The alley was narrow, only about a meter wide, and almost no light was going into the space. There were no gas lamps to keep away the darkness, so what little light could be found came from the sky.

Dan glanced back the way he’d come, but saw no one.

Back to hiding, now. Phil should be here soon.

He stepped into the alley and immediately gagged at the stench.

He did say to hide behind some rubbish. I suppose I found it.

A few careful steps later and Dan found the source of the smell: a huge, rotting pile of garbage blocking the path to the end of the alley. Flies buzzed around food wrappers and glass bottles, and Dan was fairly certain he could faintly see a puddle of liquid oozing out of the bottom of the pile that smelled suspiciously like vomit.

Lovely, he thought sarcastically, gagging again. He covered his nose and began breathing through his mouth to try to protect himself from the smell.

Glancing back at the opening of the alley, Dan decided he’d gone far enough to stay hidden, since he hadn’t been able to see the rubbish from the entrance, so he crouched down to wait for Phil.

How long has it been now? It must have been at least ten minutes since I left the bar, I’m sure. But I still don’t know if that means Phil will be here in five, or if I still need to wait the full fifteen. If he’s not here in fifteen minutes, what do I do? Is it the same as when he left me in the closet and he told me to just keep waiting? And when he gets here, what will happen then? He said something about taking me to his flat for the night, but what about after that? The officers that saw my face might recognize me if I try to go back to my life, even if I can make it to my own flat.

Dan sighed quietly.

If only I hadn’t come to this awful bar.

The wait for Phil passed by agonizingly slowly. The minutes crawled by as Dan worried and wondered, leaving him with no sense of how long had really passed. It could have been five minutes, ten minutes, a full half hour, but it felt never-ending.

Dan worried that the smell from the rubbish would attach to his clothes and make him suspicious when Phil took him away. He worried that Phil wouldn’t come back, or that Phil would lead him somewhere just as horrible as if he’d been arrested.

He worried what his life was about to become.

Maybe I’ll be alright. I have to avoid a few police officers, but they have no proof of my behavior. I haven’t actually been sleeping around, and nobody saw me kissing Grant, so they’d have no reason to arrest me. I have to make it through tonight, then I can return to my own flat and my own life and pretend women hold my interest like men do, just like a good German man would. I’ll be alright, if I can just avoid the-

A soft sound broke through Dan’s thoughts.

Scuff-click, scuff-click, scuff-click…

Dan felt his heart start to race again.

Those footsteps sound like they’re from the boots of the police, but do they belong to Phil, or some man who’s going to find me and drag me away to die?

Dan glanced around himself, trying to find something to pick up to be able to fight should the need arise, but there was nothing. His only hope would come from his own fists and the darkness of the alleyway.

The footsteps got louder as they approached, and Dan felt himself tensing, coiling into himself like a spring ready to jump at whoever might find him.

Scuff-click, scuff-click, scuff-

“Dan?” whispered a voice as a vague figure appeared in the entrance to the alley.

Dan held his breath. He thought it was Phil, finally here to take him somewhere safe, but he couldn’t be sure; Dan had only heard Phil talk a few times, and he had been under a substantial amount of stress every time he’d heard Phil’s voice so far.

So Dan waited for further proof that it really was Phil rather than someone trying to arrest him.

But what if Phil still is trying to arrest me? He could look like a hero if he catches a stray that ran away, even if he technically let me go at first. Maybe this is all just a ruse for Phil to get a promotion.

The figure’s head turned slightly, checking both sides of the street once more, then shuffled into the alley.

“It’s alright, it’s Phil.”

The figure finally got close enough for Dan to make out the pale skin reflecting off the face just well enough for him to confirm that it was, in fact, Phil.

Dan heaved a deep breath, partially in relief and partially to prepare himself for the next stage in his journey.

“What now?” Dan asked, slowly standing up from next to the rubbish.

Now that Phil could tell where Dan was, he walked more purposefully to stand in front of Dan.

Dan took an involuntary step backwards because of Phil’s pace and sudden proximity, feeling the pressure of a wall pressing into his back.

“I’ve completed the work assigned to me, so I’m free to go home. There are still officers patrolling the perimeter to catch anyone who might have run away before we arrived, so it would be safest for you to come with me. I know how to avoid them.” Phil glanced back down the alley as if to make sure no one was about to enter at the other end. “I’ll take you to my flat, at least for the night, because I don’t want you to walk anywhere else alone tonight. Alright?”

Dan nodded carefully, eyes shifting between Phil’s face, nightstick, and the entrance of the alley.

I really don’t have a choice. I just have to hope that this will end up in my favor.

“Good.” Phil nodded once. He took a step back towards the entrance of the alley, looking around for signs of life on the street. Apparently he found none, as he turned back to Dan and waved him forward.

“Come on, then. The sooner we get moving, the better.”

The sooner we get moving, the sooner I can put this all behind me.

Dan took a deep breath, and walked towards Phil, the street, and freedom.

The street was empty when they stepped out together, side by side, although that wasn’t really a surprise. It must have been the early hours of morning by now, for one, and the raid of the bar would have chased away any remaining traffic.

Dan still found himself relieved that they were alone.

Should I be relieved? This man could still do anything he wants to me.

“Stop looking around so much. Keep your head facing forward or tilted towards me like we’re having a conversation,” Phil instructed.

Dan’s head snapped forward.

Have I been looking around? I hadn’t noticed…

“Glancing around like that is suspicious. You’re clearly checking to see if anyone else is around constantly, and you look paranoid. I know you’re anxious and afraid, but you have to trust me. I will get you through the night.”

Dan could feel Phil’s eyes on his face, but he couldn’t bring himself to meet them.

Trust. “Trust me,” he says. I don’t even know him.

Dan’s anxiety couldn’t be contained. He managed to keep his head facing forward rather than on a constant swivel, managed to keep his shaking hands hidden in his pockets as casually as possible, managed not to break out into a run as his brain screamed at him to get out.

But his brain would not be quieted.

With every step, Dan was reminded of where he was and who he was with. The sound of his own footsteps next to the constant scuff-click scuff-click he had begun to associate with police officers, danger, and an unknown, horrible death filled his ears and fueled the anxiety, the panic.

Eyes forward, keep walking, he thought to himself. It can’t be that much farther.

They walked in silence, not wanting to alert anyone in the area of their presence.

Dan so wished that this wasn’t his life. That he hadn’t decided to go to The Bird’s Nest tonight, that he hadn’t been born a defect, an outcast, an abomination. That he had fallen in love with an Aryan woman. That he could be a good German, just like everyone expected, demanded, of him.

That he didn’t have to live in fear of the unknown, facing the consequences of his own decisions and actions at the side of a man who still might arrest him.

That he didn’t have to walk silently down a street next to a dangerous stranger, trembling in fear and running from his own identity.

His heart ached for a better world, a better life. A simpler life.

Why couldn’t I have just been normal?

The silence beat down heavily on Dan’s mind, forcing him to keep worrying, worrying, worrying as they walked by street after street.

Time seemed to have disappeared somewhere between when Dan had arrived at The Bird’s Nest and now. Dan had no way of knowing how long he and Phil walked, how long he’d hid, or how long since the raid had begun, but it felt like he’d walked into the bar days ago. The Dan that had walked into The Bird’s Nest earlier that night already seemed a lifetime away from the Dan trudging along, the stench of garbage practically attached to his skin, desperate for a redo.

“Keep your head down; you’re crying again,” muttered Phil.

Dan flinched at the sound, but did as he was told and trained his eyes on the ground. He pulled a shaky hand from the pocket of his trousers and wiped at his cheeks, frustrated to find the wetness there.

Stop crying, dammit, it won’t help! It will only make things worse for you if you’re spotted!

Berating himself only served to cause more tears to fall, although Dan was conscious of them this time.

No, Dan, stop! They’ll find you! They’ll know! Stop crying, you piece of shit, this is going to get you killed!

When a sob bubbled its way out of Dan’s throat, he felt a hand latch onto his arm and pull, dragging him to the side. Another hand slapped over Dan’s mouth, muffling his instinctive cry of fear.

His back met the wall at the corner of a dark building, and he whimpered.

Phil’s eyes burned into Dan’s own, a slight panic flaring up in Phil’s expression.

Dan felt himself cringing backwards, trying to put as much distance between him and the officer as he could. He flailed his arms and legs in an attempt to break free, but there was no escaping the man’s grasp.

No, no, no, this is it. This is what I was afraid of, what I knew would happen if I came with him! I should have let them arrest me. I need to get away-

Dan thrashed violently, cries and shouts rising up in his throat again.

Phil roughly caught both of Dan’s wrists and pinned them to the wall above Dan’s head with one hand, then slapped his other back across Dan’s mouth.

“Dan, I need you to stop fighting me, and I need you to calm down,” Phil whispered frantically.

Stop fighting? Calm down? Like fucking hell, you lying, evil bastard! Dan thought, jerking his arms again. He remained pinned to the wall, but glared defiantly into the officer’s eyes.

Phil stared back with wide, honest eyes. Dan couldn’t tell if the colorful irises comforted him or disturbed him. Phil’s brows were wrinkled in concern, and he spoke in an earnest whisper.

“I will not hurt you. I know you’re scared, and I know you don’t think you can trust me. There’s nothing I can do to make you feel better right now, and there’s nothing I can do to make you trust me beyond what I’ve already tried to do for you. But if you let your emotions run wild, this will not end well for either of us. We’re almost to my flat. It’s only two streets away, alright? Please let me help you,” Phil pleaded desperately.

Dan stopped thrashing, realizing it would do him no good anyway, but stood firm, his muscles taut. He scanned Phil’s face skeptically in an attempt to determine the man’s true intentions.

He hasn’t hurt me yet. He was rough, but he hasn’t hurt me.

Dan stared into Phil’s eyes, but still only found sincerity.

I don’t know him well enough to know for certain, but he might be telling the truth. He might really want to help me, after all of this. Either way, I can’t get home without running the risk of getting caught, so I have to calm down.

The tears were still streaming out of Dan’s eyes, worsened by the stress Phil had just added by pulling him aside so suddenly, but Dan made an effort to steady his breathing. He closed his eyes and focused on clearing his mind, only thinking about the immediate future.

He would indicate to Phil that he was calm, then they would continue walking. They’d arrive at Phil’s flat, Dan would stay for one night, and then leave for his own flat the next morning.

But then what? What about the officers who saw your face?

Dan shook his head to himself, clearing the doubts and concerns.

Walk to the flat. Get out of the open. Walk to the flat. Get out of the open.

Finally, Dan opened his eyes and nodded at Phil.

Tentatively, Phil released Dan and slowly backed away.

Dan wiped the remaining moisture from his face, then let his arms fall to his sides.

Walk to the flat. Get out of the open.

He nodded again, then made eye contact with Phil again.

“Let’s go,” Dan mumbled, voice shaking.

Phil’s eyes scanned his face as if to make sure Dan wouldn’t have another outburst, then gave a curt nod, features hard and determined. He turned and continued walking down the street. Dan took a deep breath, and followed close behind.

Walk to the flat. Get out of the open. They’ll have a harder time catching you if you’re hiding.

Dan trained his eyes on the ground and counted his steps in the hopes that it would distract him from the flurry of thoughts threatening to overpower him yet again.

Don’t think about it. Stop thinking about the bar. Stop thinking about the screams, and the waiting, and the fear, and the unknown-

Stop it. Find a distraction. Dan closed his eyes and breathed for a moment, still walking.

One, two, three, four, …

He made it to 23 before his thoughts crept back in.

What will happen next? Will I sleep at his flat and go home in the morning? What if it’s still not safe? How will I know when it’s safe?

Dan shook his head.

Walk to the flat.

One, two, three, four, …

Scuff-click, scuff-click, scuff-click, …

Phil’s footsteps echoed in Dan’s brain, and Dan shuddered.

Get out of the open.

Nine, ten, eleven, twelve, …

Dan forced himself to focus on his own footsteps, since anything else would send him spiraling into a fear-induced panic again. He kept his head bent and his hands stuffed into his pockets, creating as few distractions from his count as possible.

Within a few short strides, he was so engaged in counting his steps that he almost didn’t realize that Phil had stopped walking.

“We’re here,” Phil muttered, pulling out a key from his pocket.

Dan jumped, then turned to his right to see the building Phil had led him to.

In the darkness of the night, it was hard to see much of the architecture, but Dan could tell that the building was worn and run-down. The brick seemed to be crumbling in more places than not, and the windows above were cracked.

Despite its uninviting exterior, Dan found himself itching to get inside.

Inside would be hidden, private, and maybe even safe - at least for a short time.

Phil unlocked the door, then stepped aside, gesturing for Dan to enter.

“Go on,” Phil whispered tiredly. “We can talk inside.”

Dan swallowed heavily, hesitating. He still wasn’t sure he could trust Phil.

Go inside. Get out of the open. You don’t know what he might do to you, but he’s taken you this far. You have to trust him.

With one last glance up and down the street, Dan nodded once to himself in determination, then carefully stepped past Phil and into the flat.

Season 1, Episode 6

I have no explanation for the stupidly long wait for this one other than the fact that I am a lazy motherfucker. BUT. CHALLENGE TIME- I’m in the midst of a mini vacation from work so when I’m not working on cosplay I WILL BE WRITING. Er, analyzing. Er, plotting. Er, SOMETHING.

Anyway! Onto the episode where Io pissed me the fuck off but still managed to be a loveable asshole in the end, anyway! Also LOTS OF UNDER THE SURFACE SHIT! YAYYYYY. 

I also apologize if I miss responding to some comments on these; with as sporadic as my time on tumblr is these days (90% is on mobile) I can’t fucking remember what replies I’ve reblogged or not OTL

Firstly I haven’t really thought much about it but what’s up with the title for this episode? “Love is something you wear on your back?” Is that a reference to the “so generous he’d give you the shirt off his back” phrase? If that’s meant to apply to Io in this episode for his “loyalty” I think they missed the mark there...

FANCY STUDENT COUNCIL IS FANCY omg they’re so fucking rich why do they even have this setup it’s so ridiculous

I sometimes get the feeling that this is a wealthy private school, similar to Ouran academy, with scholarships for low-income students (IE Yumoto). The parallels are there- but as established later in the episode, why the fuck would Yumoto be given a scholarship because it’s definitely not academics.

Maybe the Hakone family is actually wealthy but they just live modestly because their parents are gone and Gora wants to make the fortune last?

So we’re halfway through the season and Wombat is seemingly trying to point our boys in a particular direction. HMMMMMM. 

Seriously I would love to know just how much of this is Wombat talking out his ass for the sake of the reality show and how much of it is shit he actually believes and he actually wants the boys to do a good job and ‘protect the earth’

I for one am on Wombat’s side because he’s fucking adorable but I do love the conspiracy/manipulation theory~

And En is apparently really fucking smart

The entire conversation about Yumoto’s academic abilities is really interesting-

Apparently he has very good spatial awareness (child show me your ways I cannot directions for the life of me) but poor language skills

I don’t know if I am qualified to speculate about his cognitive state but perhaps it wouldn’t be so far-fetched to say that from that tidbit, Yumoto perhaps has a learning disability?

But then again, here it’s played for laughs/Yumoto’s just lazy and doesn’t see the value in school

Perhaps though he’s not motivated because he’s never really been able to get an instruction style that jives with him? So on certain subjects he’s over being discouraged and just accepts that typical academic instruction just isn’t for him?

This entire scene is fascinating from the lens of a future educator (albeit I haven’t taken any development or learning courses yet) but as someone who likes school Yumoto is the type of person (if he doesn’t have a learning disability, that is) who would confuse me IRL lolololol

“What? You don’t like the rigorous structure and inherent validation system of grading that even though it causes me undue anxiety and stress it gives me a sense of self-worth and purpose and without people giving me deadlines I cannot function?”

Well that got too deep oops I apologize for the too much in-depth taste of Cupkayke’s psyche

Somehow I didn’t get that until this point in the series, but then again Io isn’t the type to care about his popularity unless it makes him money

Yellow phone for Io! They’re actually really heavy-handed with the color coding but most of the time it’s in ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ moments. It’s like a fun game of I spy!

I can see where the headcanon that Akoya has a crush on Io started- the fact he goes out of his way to compliment Io is a bit telling.

Buuuut I still ship the Pinks over IoAko; but with the caveat of the Pinks both pining over Io and having their feelings unrequited! Oooooh the angst!

I still don’t know how Yumoto can get a ZERO in Japanese. Is it his grammar? Conjugation? Is Japanese like English is in the US where they go over literature and like Atsushi said he makes logic leaps that no one else does so he misinterprets the text? I AM CONFUSED. Wouldn’t he at least get some points?

This could play into En’s self-consciousness on how he’s percieved (see his panic about looking ‘old’) and perhaps he also only wants to be percieved as ‘lazily intelligent’.

And like even if he’s really only in the DC because their ‘meetings’ give him enough downtime to invest in his business ventures I find it highly unlikely that the Student Council would pay him enough to make up for the loss he’d suffer because of his free time getting cut. Okay. Unpacking here- Io’s face in that cap says to me that he is well aware of how he’s being percieved. He’s well aware that he’s betraying the DC and the person who he would consider his best friend is calling him out on it. That look screams guilt.

However, what he says here- and here is where I am pissed the writers didn’t give us more context- he says ‘money is important/money doesn’t betray’. 

Which if you take him saying this to its most logical conclusion, he’s saying that he feels the DC will betray him at some point. Being involved with the DC, which doesn’t directly make him any money, will hurt him in the long run to the point where he would feel betrayed.

He’s said this before; money doesn’t betray. I can’t remember which episode (which is sad because I just did a write up on it) but I know the context of the conversation was when they were talking about the concept of ‘Love’ with Wombat. Everything Io does is for money. Relationships seem to do jack shit for him. 

But it appears here that this move is premptive. You have to do some inferring but it’s not so far fetched to say that Io has found himself caring for the DC (and potentially the Battle Lover thing) a lot more than he originally thought he would. And perhaps, based on previous experiences (what, we don’t know) he is afraid that they will betray him. Whether in terms of finances, emotions, or both, isn’t clear.

I feel like in the snow episode of s2 there’s a throwaway line about Io making Igloos that might have had some more under the surface about his past- for some reason I inferred he was often lonely as a child. I can’t remember why, though.

But I guess what I’m trying to say here is that this scene would be a whole lot more poignant if we had the entire narrative. Io is making this move, on the surface, because of money. But that’s foolish, especially for someone as smart as him, for the reasons I mentioned above. Even as rich as the SC are collectively, they probably wouldn’t be able to pay Io enough for his treasurer services to make it more lucrative than investing in his downtime with the DC. 

So it seems like he is trading his relationship with the DC- a personal relationship with feelings involved- for a relationship with the SC, one that is primarily business-focused. From their outer appearances, Io definitely knows that ‘rich kids’ like himself don’t tend to focus on friendship, so he’d be relatively safe to keep things strictly business.

Which means Io finds the idea of a business-only relationship more appealing/safer than a relationship based on friendship.

And supposedly, by extension, even if he did have to keep being a Battle Lover, he could keep that relationship strictly business too, by simply showing up and helping fight monsters without actually spending any time with the DC.

But without the context, this is speculation. Is there anything in the novels/comics/games that add to this???

Ryuu is rightfully pissed off! But the look Io gives here says again ‘I know what I am doing is hurtful, but I made my decision in my/everyone’s best interests’. Supposedly.

Io’s ‘I can’t tell you that’ is cheeky but I can take it 2 ways actually. Potentially, the SC was more profitable money wise, but the DC is more profitable for Io emotionally. So it could mean both of those things. Or like I thought earlier, the DC could be both emotionally and financially profitable and Io is just being a little shit because he second-guessed everything but doesn’t want to admit why.

I don’t know if my ramblings about Io’s motivations made much sense but that’s like, the ONLY thing I can think of that justifies his willingness to leave other than he was just being a little shit and following the yen for no reason. Again, if there’s any other canonical evidence from other media that explains this episode please point me in that direction because I am confused! This explanation makes sense but... I don’t understand how the writers wanted the audience to take this episode. Second Circuit: There is no public health and safety rationale for banning the storage of salt. The ordinance thus falls afoul of federal law protecting railways from local regulations (unless those regulations meaningfully protect public health and safety).

Federal criminal trials must begin within 70 days after a defendant is charged, but there are many ways to pause the clock. So it is rare indeed, notes the Third Circuit, that convictions are overturned on speedy trial grounds. And yet this week the circuit yields up not one but two such cases. Case 1: The gov't took 37 days to transport a defendant to a psych eval—something that stops the clock for just 10 days—and can point only to its own negligence for why it took so long. Conviction vacated, and no retrying defendant because he's already served his sentence. In Case 2, the trial court, of its own volition, postponed trial by 79 days but failed to discuss how that affected the speedy trial clock. Conviction vacated, but it's up to the trial court whether defendant can be retried.

Allegation: Patrick's girlfriend, Nicole, cheats on him with David. Nicole tells David that his wife, Audrey, is having an affair, too—with Patrick. Two male students sue under the Equal Protection Clause, but the district court denies their request for preliminary injunction. Which, says the Eighth Circuit, was error. But "over the past five years, the representation of girls in Minnesota athletics has been almost directly proportional to the number of girls enrolled at Minnesota schools." So there's no good reason to exclude the boys.

As the lights went green I begin to move off slowly as I did another car came from the left of me and tried to turn right as he speed up he crashed into the drivers side of the car. After he crashed into my car he went to drive off by reversing, I jumped out of my car to stood in his was so he could not drive off the witness behind me called the police while I was stopping his from driving off he started to drive forwards trying to me me out the way. After the driver spoke to the police on the phone, he then gave me his Name, Phone number and Insurance information. The next day I called my insurance company they was vary helpful and I believe the clam would be settled in my favor as I had CCTV of the crash as I had a camera inside of my car and a witness that was behind my car at the time of the crash. After nearly 4Months I have now revived a letter stating that the claim has been closed on a Without Prejudice Basis. When I contacted Aviva to see what the 3rd party has not accepted full liability they said it was dealt with like this as the 3rd party who crashed into me was not responding to and calls or letters that have send him. Aviva did not asked to see the CCTV of the crash and did not take into account the witness statement. WHAT CAN I DOOO??""
