weekly fic round up
it has been a minute. time isn’t real and i’m not sorry.
Previously on VM Fic Recs:
theohara, “Rich Dirt,” R, Pre-series AU
"And Logan wouldn’t let you have anything. He’d danced over to you and smirked in your face and twirled your plastic cup right out of your hand and cooed that just because your Daddy wasn’t sheriff anymore didn’t give you license to break the law, and he’d acted all shocked with his hand over his mouth and he’d laughed like breaking glass and nanced off with your drink.“
Notes: reading rich dirt first thing in the morning (it is 5:26am) is not a good idea. i am gasping and sobbing and as always, this is the holy grail of fics. perfect veronica characterization. perfect logan characterization. perfect amount of awful, terrible hurt, and that lingering taste of something sweet that has soured. so fucking good. also, can we all sit down and talk about this -- In the fic, Logan gets roofied and is wasted and gets put to bed and mocked behind his back. Whereas, in canon, Veronica gets roofied and is wasted and gets put to bed and raped. Twice. Perfect encapsulation of the rape culture inherent in Veronica Mars, and especially in the Shelly Pomroy party episodes.
New to VM Fic Recs:
Pink Lemonade Author: Haley J. The Bat Pairing: Logan/Lilly/Veronica Rating: NC-17 Genre: Romance, Friendship, Sex Setting: Pre series  Spoilers: uh n/a  Chapters: 1 Word Count: 4325 Status: Complete Summary: On a trip to Honolulu, Lilly manages to bring Veronica out of her pink, frosty shell. Notes: We love threesome fics!!! Each and every one of them (if I like the pairings) is a gift and an offering to me, personally, and I cherish it. I love every inch of this fic, except I personally picture it taking place beside the Kane’s pool. Anyway, it’s a dream and Lilly Kane is a force to be reckoned with and so is Veronica Mars (and Logan, my darling boy, is there too).
For All That We Are Author: MoreHuman Pairing: David/Patrick, Logan/Veronica Rating: Teen Genre: Friendship, Banter, Logan Echolls is The Best Setting: Season 4 Spoilers: 4.08, “Years, Continents, Bloodshed”  Chapters: 1 Word Count: 2574 Status: Complete Summary: Because it’s clear David Rose’s husband doesn’t just love him. He appreciates him. He appreciates him so much it seeps from his pores, evaporates off his skin, becomes airborne. It’s contagious. Logan’s getting a David Rose Appreciation contact high, and he doesn’t like it. Notes: I read this forever ago, but I’m recommending it now since schitt’s creek ended. David Rose is in perfect characterization and the bit where Logan’s thinking about Veronica -- you will Know the bit when you read it i’m not ruining it -- is so heart wrenching and GOOD. The ending is a bit abrupt and kind of a tonal shift in the piece, but overall it’s solid and you don’t have to have seen schitt’s creek to understand it, in my opinion.
Meds: Cassidy Casablacas, This Is (Not) Your Life Author: queenofhell_proserpina Pairing: Cassidy Casablancas (Mac/Cassidy, Cassidy/Peter, Dick/Cassidy) Rating: Mature Genre: AU, Cassidy Casablancas is Fucked (Up) Setting: Season 2 Spoilers: All of Season 2 Chapters: 1 Word Count: 10368 Status: Complete Summary: How it matter to us, how it mattered to me, and the consequences. An AU/not an AU. Notes: I recently brought this up on twitter and it reminded me how much I enjoyed this fic. Thoroughly engrossing and original!! A deep dive in Cassidy’s psychosis given....everything. Follows canon in one storyline, while the other storyline goes canon divergent. It’s incredible.
Peachy Keen Jelly Bean Author: synful_trixxie Pairing: Logan/Veronica Rating: NC-17 Genre: Romance!!!  Setting: Season 3 (probably) Spoilers: n/a Chapters: 1 Word Count: 3097 Status: Complete Summary: Arguments and controversies have always been their foreplay. Notes: listen. this fic is doing so many things for me. i firmly believe that lilly pegged logan often (and well!!) and it has always been my belief that she would use a pink dildo because that’s! her! brand! but in this fic veronica’s pegging logan (for his first time ever) while wearing a pink harness and using a pink dildo and i’ll allow it. also i want you all to picture that lisa from the simpsons dancing with the headphones on gif/meme here because that’s exactly what i’m doing.
Heart. Beat.  Author: the_rocklobster Pairing: Veronica (Logan/Veronica, Veronica/Duncan) Rating: NC-17 Genre: Romance!!!, Logan Echolls is a Canonically Good Fuck  Setting: Season 2 Spoilers: 2.03, “Cheatty Cheatty Bang Bang” Chapters: 1 Word Count: 459 Status: Complete Summary: It all comes down to the boy who makes your heart beat faster, doesn't it? Notes: veronica masturbating to logan and saying duncan is bad in bed we. love. it.
We Are Hanging Here Author: Sorcha Pairing: Logan/Veronica, Duncan Rating: NC-17 Genre: Romance, Friendship Setting: Season 1 AU Spoilers: 1.21, “A Trip to the Dentist”  Chapters: 1 Word Count: 3925 Status: Complete Summary: A Trip To The Dentist ends with a trip to the doctor... Notes: Logan and Veronica are so, so sweet in this!!  Also, the opening scene extends their pool house make out into.....you know, deeper pleasantries and I am making all the grabby hand gestures because it is hot folks and quippy and it’s what we fucking deserved!!! (Just. Don’t. think about the fact that it’s all on aaron’s creepy camera like i just did while revising this note. god). The Logan/Duncan friendship in this is also quite good -- I am a sucker for bedside emotions, blame the Nathan & Lucas scene in the first season of one tree hill -- and Logan saying Duncan’s gonna kick his ass and that Duncan’s not petty like he is made me LAUGH.

it’s my goal to eventually work through the whole list of the AFI top 100, so here’s what’s on it and what I’ve seen:
Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941) - seen; incredibly overrated; probably would not have reached the popularity it currently has had Hearst not made such a big fucking deal about it. why this is the top spot is beyond me.
The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola, 1972)
Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1942) - seen; pretty good, actually worth watching
Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese, 1980)
Singin' in the Rain (Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen, 1952) - seen; genuinely still incredibly funny and feel-good. please watch it if you haven’t!
Gone with the Wind (Victor Fleming, 1939)
Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962)
Schindler's List (Steven Spielberg, 1993) - seen most of; could not watch the second tape. incredibly heavy.
Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958) - seen; not bad, but why the hell is this above Rear Window?! it’s hardly had the same lasting cultural effect as Rear Window, The Birds, Psycho, or even The 39 Steps
The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939) - seen, but like, who hasn’t?
City Lights (Charlie Chaplin, 1931) - seen; i think i like Modern Times better but it’s still good!
The Searchers (John Ford, 1956)
Star Wars (George Lucas, 1977) - seen; still holds up pretty well to modern scifi imo
Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) - seen; a classic. should be above Vertigo.
2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick, 1968) - seen; i can understand why this made the list but if you can only watch one significant sci-fi film, watch Fritz Lang’s Metropolis instead. to everyone except cishet white guys, 2001ASO will be extraordinarily difficult to sit through. the pacing is godawful.
Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder, 1950)
The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967) - seen; not sure i can tell you what makes it special, though. i guess it’s good as far as 60s movies go, but i’d rather Rebel Without a Cause stayed on here.
The General (Buster Keaton, Clyde Bruckman, 1926) - i’m pretty sure i’ve seen this but i can’t remember anything about it.
On the Waterfront (Elia Kazan, 1954) - seen; definitely watch this one, it’s so good
It's a Wonderful Life (Frank Capra, 1946) - seen; obviously, since i’m Catholic. a Christmas standard, but if the holidays depress you don’t watch it then.
Chinatown (Roman Polanski, 1974)
Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959)
The Grapes of Wrath (John Ford, 1940)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982) - seen, but i don’t remember anything about it.
To Kill a Mockingbird (Robert Mulligan, 1962) - seen; i think it was pretty good but the only thing I remember is that Atticus Finch is the original DILF.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Frank Capra, 1939)
High Noon (Fred Zinnemann, 1952)
All About Eve (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1950)
Double Indemnity (Billy Wilder, 1944)
Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979)
The Maltese Falcon (John Huston, 1941) - seen it, but i don’t remember anything about it, so i’m gonna rewatch it
The Godfather Part II (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Miloš Forman, 1975)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (David Hand, 1937) - seen; the forest part still freaks me out, to be honest
Annie Hall (Woody Allen, 1977) - seen; i begrudgingly have to admit that it is pretty good. if you’ve seen (500) Days of Summer, you’ve pretty much seen Annie Hall.
The Bridge on the River Kwai (David Lean, 1957)
The Best Years of Our Lives (William Wyler, 1946)
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (John Huston, 1948)
Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick, 1964) - i genuinely can’t remember if i ever managed to watch this all the way through or not. i know i tried several times in sixth grade because i, for some reason, had a crush on Peter Sellers, but if i ever managed to make it through it was apparently unremarkable enough that i can’t recall it.
The Sound of Music (Robert Wise, 1965) - seen; not sure what there is to say about it. but i certainly have seen it.
King Kong (Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack, 1933)
Bonnie and Clyde (Arthur Penn, 1967) - seen; really wasn’t that great. not sure why so many people have a hardon for this movie. again...could we not have kept Rebel Without a Cause instead?
Midnight Cowboy (John Schlesinger, 1969)
The Philadelphia Story (George Cukor, 1940)
Shane (George Stevens, 1953)
It Happened One Night (Frank Capra, 1934)
A Streetcar Named Desire (Elia Kazan, 1951)
Rear Window (Alfred Hitchcock, 1954) - seen; definitely up there with Psycho. how this placed so far behind Vertigo, of all the Hitchcock movies, i’ll never understand. skip Vertigo and watch Rear Window instead.
Intolerance (D. W. Griffith, 1916)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Peter Jackson, 2001) - seen; very good, of course, but i rewatched it after reading the book and that was a pretty jarring experience!
West Side Story (Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise, 1961) - seen; the fact that this places below not one but two Stanley Kubrick films should be considered a type of homophobia.
Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976) - seen; very dark but not bad. personally i think this should be above the Graduate in terms of quality.
The Deer Hunter (Michael Cimino, 1978)
MASH (Robert Altman, 1970)
North by Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock, 1959) - seen; pretty good but the ending is kind of abrupt. i guess it makes sense, for 1959 it’s absurdly long for a non-musical film. it’s like 2hr 15 minutes and that is just absolutely bonkers.
Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975) - seen; it fucking sucks, why are people obsessed with this film?
Rocky (John G. Avildsen, 1976)
The Gold Rush (Charlie Chaplin, 1925)
Nashville (Robert Altman, 1975)
Duck Soup (Leo McCarey, 1933) - seen about half of it and there is a very good reason i could not finish, and it is this: it was too fucking funny. it was finals and i was supposed to be writing a paper and i could not stop laughing.
Sullivan's Travels (Preston Sturges, 1941)
American Graffiti (George Lucas, 1973)
Cabaret (Bob Fosse, 1972) - seen; can’t think of another movie musical that deserves to be on here that isn’t already.
Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976)
The African Queen (John Huston, 1951)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg, 1981) - seen; i mean...it’s good... but an Indiana Jones film?
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Mike Nichols, 1966)
Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood, 1992)
Tootsie (Sydney Pollack, 1982) - seen; not bad, but kind of a weird choice for this list? it’s not something that exactly jumps to the top of my head when i think of iconic films.
A Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick, 1971) - seen; bad. extremely traumatizing. misses the point of the book. when Get Out comes of age i hope it replaces this nonsense. just another excuse for Kubirck to show off how much he hates women.
Saving Private Ryan (Steven Spielberg, 1998)
The Shawshank Redemption (Frank Darabont, 1994)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (George Roy Hill, 1969)
The Silence of the Lambs (Jonathan Demme, 1991) - seen; one of my absolute favorite films!
In the Heat of the Night (Norman Jewison, 1967)
Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, 1994) - seen; it’s been a long time, but i seem to remember it being pretty good. considering the cultural impact i would have thought it’d be up higher on the list.
All the President's Men (Alan J. Pakula, 1976)
Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin, 1936) - seen; i liked it better than City Lights, but to each their own.
The Wild Bunch (Sam Peckinpah, 1969)
The Apartment (Billy Wilder, 1960)
Spartacus (Stanley Kubrick, 1960)
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (F. W. Murnau, 1927)
Titanic (James Cameron, 1997) - seen; and though i personally think it’s overrated, i’m having a hard time grappling with the fact that it somehow comes after two Kubrick films i never hear anyone talk about.
Easy Rider (Dennis Hopper, 1969) - seen about half of it. not sure that this film even has a plotline.
A Night at the Opera (Sam Wood, 1935) - seen; i absolutely loved it. i still think the Marx Bros films are hilarious and i definitely recommend this one over A Day at the Races.
Platoon (Oliver Stone, 1986)
12 Angry Men (Sidney Lumet, 1957) - seen; i was always given the impression this was a pretty remarkable and important piece of film, so how did it wind up in 87th place?! after Easy Rider, of all things?!
Bringing Up Baby (Howard Hawks, 1938)
The Sixth Sense (M. Night Shyamalan, 1999) - seen; i know Shyamalan has never managed to replicate his success, but this is still a really good film.
Swing Time (George Stevens, 1936)
Sophie's Choice (Alan J. Pakula, 1982)
Goodfellas (Martin Scorsese, 1990)
The French Connection (William Friedkin, 1971)
Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994) - seen, but it was pretty confusing to me at the time so i’ll have to rewatch it. i’m a little surprised Kill Bill didn’t make the list.
The Last Picture Show (Peter Bogdanovich, 1971)
Do the Right Thing (Spike Lee, 1989)
Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982) - seen and plan on rewatching. how did this get lower on the list than 2001: A Space Odyssey? it’s just as influential to sci-fi films and much more interesting.
Yankee Doodle Dandy (Michael Curtiz, 1942)
Toy Story (John Lasseter, 1995) - seen, and i’m so glad it’s on here! it really does hold up very well. i hope none of its sequels ever replace it.
Ben-Hur (William Wyler, 1959)
Total: 44/100

i think i’m always going to be mad about the dumbest thing veronica mars ever did, which was texting mac “beaver’s a killer!!1!” when she A: knew mac was WITH cassidy when she sent the message, B: knew the reason cassidy killed the people he killed,  knew that it was completely unrelated to mac, had seen him around her and saw how much he cared about her, and could logically conclude that mac herself wasn’t in any danger around him, C: could have just as easily called mac and said “hey do you have a minute, i really need to talk” OR gone to logan’s suite and pulled mac aside to talk there (i think she called her first in the show and i know mac wasn’t at logan’s anymore when veronica sent the text but both would have been much better options), and D: had the resources and the credibility to report cassidy to the police. lamb doesn’t like her, but he can’t deny that her methods are effective, and she’s got the proof ready!!
tl;dr veronica being a dumbass/rob thomas’ shitty writing is the reason things went to shit so quickly after not pictured: cassidy casablancas. don’t even fucking get me started on veronica going up to the roof alone after getting an ominous text from “mac” to go meet her on the roof. my girl would never be that fucking stupid. rob thomas you have no rights.

July/August Veronica Mars Fic Prompt Submissions
Fewer fic submissions this month based off our prompts, but there are some DELICIOUS offerings that we feel honored to get to post for ya’ll. Take a load off, grab a comfy blanket or a fuzzy animal, and enjoy the reads.
------> Friendly reminder! A couple of our authors were concerned that since they twisted the prompt we wouldn’t be interested in posting. Nonsense! We’re greedy little fic mongers so twist these prompts to your heart’s delight! <------
Option Three - And the answer is… - Answer one of these questions through fic. It can be any characters, any pairings (romantic or platonic). Any setting.
3a. How would you break into your own home?
Moorings Author: fluffernutter8, aka theawkwardterrier Pairing: Mac/Cassidy, Logan, Veronica Rating: General Genre: Angst/Friendship Setting: Season 2 Spoilers: 2.22, “Not Pictured” Chapters: 1 Word Count: 2, 477 Status: Complete Summary: Her dad comes down the hall. He speaks quietly. Before her mother puts a hand to her mouth, before she whispers, "Oh my God," Mac closes her eyes. Mac POV during and following Not Pictured. Notes: Beautiful friendship and healing that happens piece by piece because of that friendship. Dark topics, given the setting, but the anchors and throughlines are light-filled.
Option Five: Twist That Cliche — Take one of the following cliched pieces of dialogue and twist it in such a way that the context, punchline, purpose, etc. is different.
5a. “Is that all you’ve got?” 5b. “(S)he’s behind me, isn’t (s)he?” 5c. “We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”
Tempting Fate Author: troublescout Pairing: Logan/Veronica, Mac, Wallace, Keith Rating: Teen Genre: Friendship/Romance/Humor Setting: Post-Mr. Kiss and Tell Spoilers: Mr. Kiss and Tell Chapters: 1 Word Count: 5, 124 Status: Complete Summary: Logan returns home from naval deployment, his 2nd while he and Veronica are a couple. It's fair to say she's pretty stoked about this development. Notes: Okay, we already embarrassed ourselves earlier this week with how much we adore this fic so all we’ll say is CLARITIN. And READ IT.
5d. “It’s not what it looks like.”
Here’s the Long and Short of It Author: jeanie205 Pairing: Logan/Veronica, Mac, Wallace, Keith Rating: Teen Genre: Romance / Humor Setting: Season 1, AU Spoilers: 1.15, “Ruskie Business” Chapters: 1 Word Count: 11, 192 Status: Complete Summary: What if, when Logan and Veronica got together junior year, the situation was a lot less angst-fest and a whole lot more rom-com? Less noir, more fluff. Set after Ruskie Business. Notes: Anger, and friendship, and Shakespeare, oh my! With brilliant little nods to canon this is a very fun and flirty read. Also a clever take on the prompt.
5e. “Yeah, you better run.”
Water Fight Author: familyofthieves, aka veronicaechollsmars Pairing: Logan/Veronica Rating: General Genre: Family/Humor Setting: Future Spoilers: Veronica Mars, the movie Chapters: 1 Word Count: ~1,000 Status: Complete Summary: Veronica and Logan’s daughter loses a fight with the garden hose. Notes: Okay, so we put this prompt here, but really it deserves to be under 5a through 5e because familyofthieves managed to use all five lines of dialogue! Our favorite moment has to be when little Charlotte tough talks the garden hose. You tell ‘em, Char!

Gimme Sympathy Recommended By: gloomygnu Author: coup in the zoo Pairing: Cassidy “Beaver” Casablancas, Madison Sinclair Rating: T Genre: General/Drama Setting: Future Spoilers: 3.12 “There’s Got to Be a Morning After Pill” Chapters: 1 Word Count: 1,977 Status: Complete Summary: “Are you just showing up to be belligerent or what?” Madison Sinclair has dreams about everyone’s favorite mass-murdering rapist. She’s not a fan. Notes: I found this little gem while scrolling through the fanfiction recommendations on the VM TV Tropes page. The original recommendation was from emmaliza who said: An interesting, unique fic that’s very funny and also very complex. Tapping into Madison Sinclair’s mind, of all characters, was a good concept. I would like to add that the story does a wonderful job of understanding Madison who is so often made into the big, bad wolf in Veronica’s life but, really, is just a girl who probably feels like Veronica threatens the perfect world she so desperately wants.

Good Luck Getting Laid (and Other Things You Shouldn’t Say) Recommended by: belladonna74527 Author: TrixieFirecracker (aka belladonna74527) Pairing: Mac/Cassidy Rating: M Genre: Romance Setting: Summer after S2, AU Spoilers: 2.22, “Not Pictured” Chapters: 12 Word Count: 12, 797 Status: In progress Summary: Let’s pretend that Cassidy was never the big bad of season 2. How would he and Mac work things out? A story of how Mac and Cassidy come together as adults. Notes: I’m writing a Cassidy/Mac fic that is on ff.net.  It explores retcons season 2 where Cassidy wasn’t the bus bomber or Veronica’s rapist.

Sacrifice Theory Author: FallAway Pairing: Mac/Dick, Mac/Cassidy, Veronica/Logan (not the focus of this fic) Rating: T Genre: Humor, Romance Setting: Summer after S1, AU Spoilers: 1.22, "Leave it to Beaver" Chapters: 10 Word Count: 21, 621 Status: Complete Summary: Mac and Madison weren’t switched at birth and life as a 09er is about to take on a whole new meaning. Takes place the summer after season one. The story elements featuring Veronica, Logan, and Duncan are canon, and most of the Mac, Dick, and Cassidy elements are too. With the aforementioned exception. Notes: On the Mac/Dick front, this is a great reminder that Dick is shallow but he's not an idiot. Dick's more abrasive qualities are eliminated in this fic, making his character on the whole much more palatable. Cassidy is the sweet, kind of dorky kid we meet in the first season, and we get to see a slowly evolving relationship with Mac. And Veronica and Logan, while background in this fic, are just lovely. Fun to see them as the drama free high school couple for a change.

Key To a Dirt Palace Author: hyperemmalawiz Pairing: Mac, Wallace; Mac/Cassidy, Mac/Dick Rating: R (heed the warnings in the author's notes) Genre: Angst Setting: Season three Spoilers: 3.01, "Welcome Wagon" Chapters: 1 Word Count: 2, 935 Status: Complete Summary: She feels worn; beaten. She wants to fall asleep, but when she lets her eyes close there's a million grains of sand trapped behind, scarring her corneas and forming a Beaver-shaped monster. Notes: An incredibly dark fic that explores Mac's thoughts on Beaver and their relationship. Very well written and super intense, though incredibly depressing.

Bodycount Author: BIFF1 Recommended By: braancsa Pairing: Cassidy/Mac Rating: T Genre: Romance/Drama Setting: Season 2, AU Spoilers: 2.22, "Leave it to Beaver" Chapters: 4 Word Count: 6, 756 Status: WIP Summary: Cassidy and Mac meet a little earlier and a little blood-lust gives him an entirely different problem when it comes to forming a real relationship with Mac. Notes: Just started, 4 chapters in, but it’s Cassidy POV during season 2! And it’s Cassidy/Mac. Cassidy falls for Mac early on, and it just makes everything he feels about what he's done acres more complicated.

Damn, Damn the Circumstance Author: invida Pairing: Logan/Veronica, Beaver, Duncan Rating: R Genre: Angst/Romance Setting: Pre-series AU Spoilers: 1.22, "Leave it to Beaver" Chapters: 16 Word Count: 87, 930 Status: Incomplete (that shrieking sound you hear is my sobbing all the way from Canada) Summary: If Logan hadn't left with the easy freshman that night. Notes: One of my favourite pre-series fics. I'm pretty picky about my pre-series, I like my Veronica to still have panache and not be so gullible and naïve, like she's usually characterized pre-Pomroy party. Everyone's characterization in this fic is on point, even Veronica's (and especially Beaver's). It's frustrating, angsty, and a little romantic. It's how I picture it would have gone down if Logan had took Cindy the easy freshman upstairs, rather than to the SeXterra. BUT IT'S INCOMPLETE, which I didn't realize when I first started reading it, so reaching the last chapter was a terrible time for me. But you should still read the 16 chapters that are complete, it's definitely worth it.
