Okay.. let’s hear it! Initial thoughts of the new album!

Ugh sorry for the delay on this. I listened to the (first) album when it dropped at midnight, finished it and saw her say “double album, 15 more songs!!” went “that’s nice. I’m going to bed” fully intending to spend most of today listening and relistening to fully take it in, but then there was a crisis at work and I suddenly had a shitton to do in a very little amount of time which was not a conducive environment to fully digest these *very* dense songs. I still haven’t sat down and done nothing but listen to half the songs on the anthology, so. I am never more jealous of west coast time zoners than during new music drops. 😂

I immediately logged off the internet when I heard it had leaked Wednesday so I truly went into this blind. My initial thoughts are… well… okay! I don’t dislike it. But I don’t love it, you know? The songs are very dense but I still don’t think it’s her best writing (and I’m a Bruce Springsteen girlie; I love a cryptic lyrically dense album). There are a whole bunch of songs that I really enjoy and some REALLY good lyrics. But I remember hearing Cardigan or YOYOK for the first time and how that felt and I just don’t get that on anything here. I also cannot acknowledge the implications of how many goddamn songs are about Matty Healy and how in love with him she was without risking a mental breakdown!!! The idea that CARDIGAN was written about him… I cannot do this… take me back to when we thought The 1 was for sure about Harry Styles. I was present for the Gillette rain show “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been” psychotic break and I STILL was not prepared for the amount of psycho behavior on this album regarding the rat man!!!!

I think I have two main problems with this album. 1: it is too goddamn long. I am not one to complain about getting more content but I feel like a lot of these songs are just saying the same thing and not doing it in a way unique enough to justify having both of them. Like I think we could have EASILY trimmed a lot of fat and gotten these both into one 20-ish track album that would have read better. I feel like a lot of this has to do with the social media culture now of more, more, more, always racing towards the next thing— like how a day after we got 1989 TV the swifties were clamoring for rep TV. Like we just got 5 new songs!!! Slow down!!! I would have preferred quality over quantity lol and this album very much felt like quantity, quantity, quantity.

And then 2: I miss when she used to really push herself to try different things and to get better at her craft. Not that I want her to be attacked and get backlash, but her insane levels of fame have made her so untouchable that no one can say anything remotely constructive without being crucified and I feel like it eliminates some of the drive she has to push herself to be better and write better (hello Speak Now and Red!!!). I saw Rolling Stone gave this album a perfect 100 score like???? Hello???? The album is not bad, but to grade it as perfection compared to others? Over Red? Over Folklore? Over 1989??? Let’s be real. And I feel like this album has a lot of “well it’s good enough” moments where I’m like… but is it good enough? Could we have worked to make this better? I feel like she needs new collaborators too. She does great work with Jack and Aaron but I feel like they know each other too well and it’s getting to the point where they’re not editing or pushing her as much as they should be. A lot of the songwriting here just felt complacent. Get Liz Rose back in the room I am begging!!!!!

Now that I’ve typed all that out I feel like I am being increasingly harsh, but idk. It’s a fine album. There are some songs I enjoy and I’m sure it’s gonna grow on me more as I listen and really digest, but it doesn’t really have any super stand out moments to me right now. I saw a tweet saying this album is not to top the charts, not to draw in new fans, this is for the swifties who know and care about Taylor’s lore and want to listen and know what was going on during this period of her life, and she just needed to get it out there and say it so she can move on. And I do enjoy the lore, don’t get me wrong, but I kinda hope that’s the case and the next album is a clean slate, because… other than the lore, there’s nothing really new or interesting here, sonically, lyrically, etc. I really hope her next album she takes a big risk and does something different. I also feel like she needs a BREAK. Like I don’t want any new music for the entire year of 2025. Go recharge and take a break and come back to us with your best work, queen. I feel like the rerecords and the constant churning out of new music and content is just watering down her undeniable talent.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did, but you know. C’est la vie. I never was a big poetry girlie anyways, and I’ve seen some people say they love the album (and to them I say I’m happy for you I clap I cheer and i’m gonna let you rock!!) but for me… idk. We’ll see how I feel in a week. But throughout the day today I kept feeling the temptation to put Chappell Roan back on, so… I think that sort of sums up my initial feelings on the whole thing. 😂

Sorry for the delay in answering lol, I saw this last night but wanted to listen to the whole thing before forming opinions (I did only vault tracks and like 3-4 songs I was very nervous/ very excited for last night because I didn’t want to stay up till 2 am 😂) So tl; dr: this is where I’m at rn:

😂😂😂 all jokes aside, I really like it! Not a huuuuge fan of some of the orchestration changes but it could have been a lot worse 😂 My main issue is my same issue for all the rerecords— while her voice is more mature now, and I do love hearing the songs with her stronger vocals, it’s always just missing a lot of the raw emotion the originals have which makes sense because it’s been so long but still bugs me. But I also listen to the stolen versions over the Taylor’s versions so after this weekend I will probably rarely listen to the TVs anyways so I don’t let it stress me out too much 😂

My biggest problem is the way she is literally trying to BRAINWASH us into thinking Speak Now is not as it was originally punished. I thought the removal of If This Was A Movie was dumb but the Better Than Revenge lyric change REALLY has me heated. Like, girlie. This is not Picture to Burn where you changed it after the first wave of CDs and 99% of your casual audience doesn’t even KNOW there’s a homophobic version. We’ve been singing Better Than Revenge for 13 years. Changing the lyric completely defeats the purpose of faithfully recapturing the originals with the rerecordings imo? Like just say it’s a silly song and you don’t feel this way anymore and regret the lyric if you want but don’t flat out change it and just pretend it never existed? Personally I don’t even think the og lyric is that bad compared to how scathing the rest of the song is!! The damage was already done!! 😂 But again, Idc I’m just gonna listen to the stolen version anyways so I suppose I should not care that much but it’s just very annoying how she’s trying to alter history!! I was there when you sang it on tour Taylor I WONT FORGET

My favorite thing about the rerecords is always the vault songs and I really like these!! I think they’re miles better than the Fearless ones but probably not quite as good as the Red ones? I need a few more listens to truly form my opinions but I Can See You and Foolish One are standouts to me. And as Amy said earlier Castles Crumbling is VERY Dany coded so I’m a big fan of that one too 🙌

All in all I am lovingggg getting to relisten to this album again as it’s one of my favorites and even with my lil nitpicky things I love this project, I love how much joy it clearly brings Taylor, and I do love getting to hear her current takes on these songs. I feel the European date desire— I really wanted to try for UK tickets but my roommate shut me down lol. However, if she adds a Canadian leg… you best bet I’m hopping that border to see it again 😂 Taylor remains queen and I’m always excited to get to hear new stuff from her!!!

So I can’t remember if you said you got tickets to Taylor’s tour but I just got back from her Vegas show and I am here to say she is the reigning queen. 44 songs in 3.5hrs!! That is all 😭

Yes I’m seeing her all 3 nights at Gillette!!! I am in awe of the setlist seriously like I NEVER dared hope we’d get this much of her discography represented (tho pour one out for Speak Now gone but never forgotten ✊😔) Truly a queen among men. I’m so glad you had a good time; I am super excited for my shows!!

As a Disneyland native you have the start of this Disney day already spot on! Down to the rolled ankles at the trolley 😂 I cannot wait for the magic you’ll create!

Truly what is the lesser Disneyland evil: rolling your ankle in a trolley track or getting rammed with a stroller in fantasyland? 😂 for an east coaster I visit Disneyland way too often so this whole trip is becoming scary detailed to the point where it may be incoherent to people who haven’t been there before 😂 I think I may have to cut a lot of it lol and then post the extended version of the scene just on tumblr so I don’t force everyone to read like 15k of Sansa mobile ordering all the different seasonal food items and Ella reacting to every single ride in the park ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know 😭😭😭 she truly captured her spirit so well. Idk what I was expecting the show to be about but Baby Leia being such a big part was NOT something I would have guessed, but still such a welcome surprise!! I enjoyed it so so much (even if it emotionally destroyed me every week lmao); I really thought they did a great job with it. And now I’m back to waiting for Mando season 3 😂😂

Can I just say that the line where Dany says she didn’t know if she would ever get to tell Jon she loves him again just had my heart in two 🥺 like all this time she could have been dying to hear Jon say he loves her or misses her but instead worried that she would never get the chance to tell him she loves him again 🥺🥺🥺 I cannot. How do you do this?! Something so simple and I literally thought about that all day (night) at work.

So I think your previous anon hit it right on the head about Dany not wanting to give herself hope that Jon will forgive her because in the last chapter Dany let it slip that spending Christmas at Jon’s would make it feel like they were a family 👀👀 and I know.. I know you can’t say anything and that all will be revealed in good time but I do love this Dany and I know she’s not a bad person. I think you mentioned it in previous posts that if we’re looking for a GOOD reason for her to not tell him we may not get it and I think that’s fair. Whatever the reason, it’s her reason. And in the conversation with Jon about her reasons why I hope they can forgive eachother. Anyway looking forward to the next update! ☺️😭

Exactly, like there really couldn’t be a good reason for what she did! Her reasons are her reasons, however flawed they may be. Now that we’re moving into the back half of the story I’m very excited to start getting into them 😁 I am so glad you are loving this Dany too just cause I love her so much 🥰 she’s a mess but she’s MY mess 😂 I can’t wait to share the next chapter and see what you think and if your theories on Dany’s feelings still stand!!

I’ve seen too many of my friends go to the Jonas Brothers concert in LA and I’m just so jelly 😭 Leave Before You Love Me is my favorite!! Also I recently heard Nick’s 2Drunk single and it made me think of Jon and if this is another Dany inspired song 👀

I went to their show when they were here and it was a blast!! Would highly recommend their concerts; they’re always so fun. Also yes hahaha I feel that a lot of the Spaceman songs *really* fit well with Jon and Dany in this story (so much so that I reworked my outline to fit some of them in 😁)
