Page (right) and Mr. Way "shooting the breeze" down on River Road at the Way residence. Mr. Page was instrumental in the development of so much we associate with Chatham today including the Fish & Game Club, Stanley Congregational Church, and an excellent school system. Chatham Gem 💎 Then & Now Back in the day, "recycle, reuse and reduce" was very much in vogue. Homes were moved on a regular basis. Simply stated, a foundation was built at the new location, a track of heavy timbers was laid, then the house was drawn on rollers by teams of horses or mules to the new site. This house, built about 1850, represents the continued transformation of Main Street from a residential to a commercial roadway. In the 1920s, the owner loved the house, but not the "busy" location so it was turned around from Main and moved just a short distance to open farmland to what today is known as the Manor Section. That insightful owner had the good thought to save this Chatham Gem .
