Page (right) and Mr. Way "shooting the breeze" down on River Road at the Way residence. Mr. Page was instrumental in the development of so much we associate with Chatham today including the Fish & Game Club, Stanley Congregational Church, and an excellent school system. This photo taken in 1893 of Nathan Grafton( original owner) and his grandchildren is the earliest image that we have of our house. Nathan was a carriage maker and the foundation of his shop is still on our property The newspaper articles say he was well known in the county and had a good reputation. The intersecting road that we live off of was named after him Our house ca. 1862 was here during ... the Civil War. My husband and I are huge history fans and have done living history for years. We question the fact that our house was built then. During a time when our country was turned upside down by war. It was deeded in 1862 so it is possible that it was built before that? There is rumor that our house was associated with the Underground Railroad. Though we have not found any evidence it is interesting to know that being this was a place where carriages were coming and going… It's very possible that people were aided to freedom. The house had fallen into disrepair as Nathan aged and after he passed his descendants took over and repaired the house. So glad they kept all the original architecture and details as IT is here today! Just another drive around Monday. 🎶🎶 An out of the way grand mansion, the William Banholzer House was built in 1885 and designed by C. Edward Dressel at a cost of $10,000. Banholzer was one of the local beer barons of Saint Paul, taking over a small brewery owned by his father in the late 1870s and growing it to a production of 12,000 barrels a year of North Mississippi Beer. The sandstone caves beneath the property were used for cooling kegs. At the time, his beer was one of the top five beers in St Paul. He died in 1897 at the age of 48 and so did the brewery. The home is now part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation campus, a treatment center for drug and alcohol addiction. Jeremiah Clemens House ca. 1835 Huntsville, AL This house was moved from its previous location at the corner Clinton Avenue and Church Street. It is now located at the corner of Pratt Avenue and Meridian Street, and houses professional offices. The original owner of the house was a first cousin of Samuel Clemens (better known as Mark Twain), and quite an interesting character in his own right. Clemens was well educated for his time, attending the former LaGrange College in Leighton, AL and the University of Alabama before studying law at Transylvania University. He began the practice of law in Huntsville in 1834 and was appointed the Attorney General for the Northern District of Alabama in 1838. In politics, Clemens was a leader of the opponents to succession in the Alabama Convention of 1861, and later an outspoken advocate for peace during the latter months of the civil war. Garth, Shackelford House ca. 1880 Courtland, AL This house was built for Mrs. George Martin Garth (Catherine) after she moved into town from “Bonnie Doon” plantation, which was located south of Courtland and later burned in 1935. Catherine Gilchrist Garth went on to marry Captain William S. Bankhead of Virginia, who was a lineal descendent of Thomas Jefferson. Its overall design is Queen Anne, but it has a Richardsonian Romanesque wooden,arched entrance, an Islamic style elongated domed roof with ogee dormers, and other suggestions of Colonial Revival and French Chateauesque around its facades. It’s a prime example of a West Coast Victorian.
