What gets me is that XLH does have every piece of information to selflessly kill herself with the Chengying sword:

- she knows that DFQC wants to free the 100,000 soldiers in the Xuanxu realm because he promised so - if she kills herself, the soldiers will be freed, - she knows that DFQC doesn't control Hellfire anymore which makes him weaker - if she kills herself, he won't need Hellfire anyway, - she knows that DFQC needs to find a way how to protect his people because the war is coming - if she kills herself, the war will probably stop or the scales will turn, - she knows that the primordial spirit of the Chidi woman is inside the Bone Orchid, feeding on her and gradually killing her - if she kills herself, the spirit will be freed, - she knows that DFQC made a pact with the evil spirit which is extremely dangerous - if she kills herself, he won't need it anymore.

And that's why she did it. Not only she freed him of the Heart Curse she inadvertently casted but she freed the 100,000 soldiers and saved his life from the evil spirit because colluding with it would lead to his untimely death. She wants him to live even when she can't be with him (for obvious reasons).

She, however, doesn't understand one thing: - why did he claim that he never loved her and that he just played tricks on her. She obviously doesn't believe it and evidently, she never will. And even if she eventually did believe it, it was never a reason for her to stop loving him.

And then we get the scene on the bridge in the Cangyan Sea where DFQC: - comes up with the best kind of love confession he ever could, - explains that the only way to break the Bone Orchid and save her was to stop her from loving him and that's why he lied to her and humiliated her, - thus doing basically what his father did and what she is doing at the moment.

I just... the way the realization hits her like a ton of bricks is so well told. You can see that she was already fragile and that's why she told him to stop talking. And then, he just blurts this out and it's just too much for her, too much for the mask she willingly wears. And she breaks. And it's heartbreaking, twisted, angsty and beautiful in the same time.

Wow.

among many things love between fairy and devil does lovely

it lets actor’s skin textures still show. they are wearing makeup as expected in show roles, and I can still see their skin texture, the roughness of skin. they weren’t smoothed over with effects. its nice. thank you

and of course the effort they put into their magic concept design and execution. how every magic effect really visualizes what it is, how it’d work, how it compliments the acting choices made by the actor portraying that magic. i can think of very few xianxia where i felt the magic looked so well thought out to how it worked and should look

#love between fairy and devil #clj #rant #lb #like... the way its PETALS gathering when xiyun goddess comes to life #the way the oldest evil god is this black sandy vapor that swirls and swirls up in black eyes then swirls back away. how it feels like it #consumes. its a great visual for something possessing consuming destructive #how the energy sharing for dongfang qingcang's primordial spirit LOOKS like fire #like fire and energy his friends send at him but also makes sense blasting them backwards away (because fire can do that)#its like. they did PHENOMENAL costume design and set designs to really make a distinct identity for the #characters and places #changheng and ronghao fighting in their different costumes was a BEAUTIFUL example of the costume design #and magic design #it looks better than a LOT of hollywood movies coming out #because the distinct concept is fully realized here

whenever i’m minding my business and enjoying cang lan jue but the episode starts playing a hlht bgm track

#it's messing with my brain so bad #it's so bad that i need to yell about it #like sir. mdm. i was about to have a moment. I ended up picking clj back up. even with it's flaws, it's still a stunningly gorgeous show with impeccable comedic timing and a lot of charming characters. orchid I missed you <3

it's easy enough to jump back into it because the characters were so memorable. I was so upset the romance was bwetween an all-powerful man and the little spirit he relentlessly abused and criticized.

and I was sad it wasn't going to be a gay ending because the setup was just perfect for it. like look at thia

damn, the screenshot function doesn't work on viki. well orchid's line translated like this makes it sounds like she wants to get married to the lady that dfqx is supposed to marry. isn't it a crying shame that she'll end up with the man who hurt her so bad this while time instead of the human lady. and dfqx bonded so well with her crush! I was rooting for them to gaze into each other's eyes and realize their feelings for each other! alas now she's saying she loves him?? when did THAT happen

AND THE SIDE GIRL HAS A CRUSH ON THE GIRL DISGUISED AS A GUY??!! and she KNOWS its a disguise too like please....

I had to rant in another post about this 'girls never say what they're really thinking' nonsense but this just clarifies for me why I like romance as a side thing in a greater fantasy or action world. especially annoying romances like this...

changheng may be a stupid fuck but at least he thinks women should choose who they marry

why does she get a fond flashback to dfqx calling her stupid like girl...

Rewatching episodes 14,15 and 16 of Love Between Fairy and Devil bring so much new perspective to me. Because during my first watch when XLH said to Jieli that “no matter what she says or do later, she does that in order to escape and there are definitely no real feelings involved” I kept expecting her to keep playing tricks and eventualy “betray” DFQC. That’s how all the crappy TV shows/movies harmed me - to expect the worst.

But... the fact is that she doesn’t.

She does, at first - not very convincingly, to be honest (funny thing is that when she needs to knock him out, she is totally capable of tricking him but when she actually needs to trick him, she is so obvious that it doesn’t work; another funny thing is that DFQC keeps playing along). But from the moment XLH learns that he is love and seven feelings removed, she just wants to cure his Love Tree because she wants him to experience feelings as they should be experienced.

Yes, she is momentarily swayed by fake Changheng because she thinks she loves him but that changes pretty quickly when she sees through the illusion and DFQC comes to save her. He found her in such a short time and he even assures her that he would always find her, no matter how many Orchids there would be. And the thing is that he SHOULDN’T be able to sense her because she got her hands on the heart-hidden hairpin but he still did and he always will. She wants to keep wearing it because she doesn’t want him to know about her own feelings (besides other things) just yet.

Once she learns that his Love Tree is actually getting recovered (her fault, lol) she is so happy and even more determined not to give up on him, no matter what he says. And so she goes ALL IN (as she always does out of love) and starts investigating the relationship between DFQC and his father, succeeding in her endeavour, only to begin to realize that love can be manifold and the one she feels for Changheng is totally different from the one she feels for DFQC.

Have I ever mentioned how much I love the show and how it makes me dissect every single look and sentence because THEY ARE FUCKING LOGICAL and there is a thing called PAYOFF?!

So am I reading too much into this or not?

We all know that Orchid remembers everything, even things she is not supposed to remember as she demonstrates with Changheng when she repeats his words to her from before he wiped out her memory, allowing him to hope for a second (poor guy) that she might actually be in love with him. That means that by resurrecting, all her previous memories have been restored.

Now, if we all agree that the dream sequence was actually REAL and that dream Orchid was the ray of her primordial spirit in DFQC's primordial spirit, does it mean that she also remembers THAT?

Because she could easily tell him to go away and stop bothering her or just ignore him as she’s been doing, anyway. But no, she actually goes to him to persuade him to leave on his own because she knows that he doesn't want to watch as she marries someone else. Her last words to him in that exchange is "I'm marrying Changheng in three days." as if it was some kind of a warning that he should leave and protect his heart.

This show is just... M.A.S.T.E.R.P.I.E.C.E.

What I love about loving Love Between Fairy and Devil is that quite a lot of us, including myself, are like DFQC.

We were broken, our love tree withered because of all the past disappointments. Then, our own XLHs came, flooding our timelines and dashboards with gifs, pictures, quotes and other stuff from the show, making us curious but still afraid to give in. Until the breaking point came and we started to watch it with gritted teeth, yelling 'this is all your fault'.

And our XLHs supported and encouraged us as our love tree started to recover until we finally emerged back up, emotionally healed, forever in love and thankful for the journey.

As an initial DFQC, I thank to all of XLHs on my Twitter timeline and Tumblr dashboard because I would have never known about this masterpiece without you.

If he really loves you, why would he hide it?

She knows why would he hide it, Changheng, and she doesn't even need to ask him because she's doing the same after talking to God Xuanwu. Love between two people IS selfish. If DFQC knows that she is the Goddess of Xishan whose love is supposed to be selfless and inclusive, then she can never really belong to him and he can never really belong to her. That's why he didn't tell her. Although it's not like he actually had time to do it, not to mention that the first time he tried, someone - YOU, Changheng - interrupted him. And it's not something you drop on someone's head out of the blue (like you just did).

(Not that I have anything against Changheng, he is a baby, baby boy but he needs to hear this if he is ever supposed to free himself of the shackles of his duties)

I just love XLH’s attitude here. Her whole demeanour just screams with:

“Changheng, I know what he was and what he did. I’ve grown up hearing stories about his downfall. Hell, I even made up a fanfic in my head about it. But you have to understand that I fell in love with him DESPITE all of that. Because I had the chance to find out that he is not as bad as people made him to be. That the choice to become a heartless monster wasn’t his and when he had the chance to reverse it, he chose to do the right thing. So what if he killed my people and my parents? (he didn’t, by the way, but that’s not the point here) It’s not something he did out of personal spite because he was stripped of his feelings. I love him and forever will even if he breaks my heart. Because he showed that he can change for love. Which is something you’ve never really done. And that’s why you will never understand.”

In another version of clj changheng and the Evil best friend are boyfriends

Not like right away. Like first his friend as usual mourns chidi woman and still enacts his evil plot to get her back, hurting everyone as collateral just like in the original. But in this alternate version he's overtly bi and falls for changheng and mid maybe mortal arc realizes what a monster he's being to some degree, chidi woman also gets some self awareness of the plot she's being dragged thru and fights to have her own self determinism. From there chidi Woman pursues dongfang qingcang romantically (mistaken in her mortal impression of him) then gains immortality again and remembers she hates him and is conflicted and deals with her own processing of that. Meanwhile she is pissed at her turned-evil disciple.

Meanwhile changhengs pretty much identical to the original version: he cares about his friend and recognizes friend cares about him but... wow did friend make a hot mess of collateral damage any. I suppose a new development: in mortal life changheng crushes on Xiao lanhua and dongfang qingcang, leads to some issues of his own to work thru when regaining immortality.
