Vol.16の続きハワードが私のアパートメントに来るその日、時間があったので、新しいジュエリーをオーダーするためにターコイズを買いに自転車でTonyの家に行きました。戻って来るとハワードが駐車場で待っていてくれました。

家に入って早速ジュエリーを受け取り、新しいジュエリーの打ち合わせをしました。その後はお互いの近況や、家族の事などを話したと思います。

自分ではわからなかったのですが、ずいぶんと長い間話していたようで、あっという間に夕方になっていました。

今でもあの時の楽しいひと時は忘れる事ができません。機会があれば、また同じ事をしたいと思っています。

今日はJourney to the desert Vol.16です。東日本大震災の翌年の2012年の5月から8月までアメリカに滞在していた頃の事を書きたいと思います。なぜ3ヶ月かというと、本当はもっと長い期間滞在したかったのですが、ビザ無しで滞在できる最長の期間が 3ヶ月だったからです。店を3ヶ月の長い期間閉めるのは、今思うと思い切った事をしたなと思いますが、前年に起きた未曾有の大災害を経験した事によって、後悔したくないという気持ちが強くなっていたのかもしれません。

滞在したのはアリゾナ州フェニックスから北に車で30分ほどのスコッツデールというところです。ここで家具付のアパートメントを借りて住む事にしました。不動産屋との交渉や契約は複雑なものでしたが、友人の故Tony Cotner（ダメリとパイユート鉱山のオーナー）が不動産エージェントを紹介してくれて、更に保証人にまでなってくれたので、何とか借りる事ができました。

2ベッドルームの広い部屋だったので、一つを仕事部屋にして近くに住むTonyから買ったターコイズの写真を撮ったり、ブログを更新したりしていました。

前述のように、 Tony Cotner（ダメリとパイユート鉱山のオーナー）が近所に住んでいたので、自転車でターコイズを買いに行くという珍しい経験をする事ができました。

そんな夏のある日ハワードから、ジュエリーが出来上がったので私のアパートメントまで届けに行くという連絡がありました。「ハワードネルソンが家に来る！」これは私にとって一大事、非常に興奮した事は言うまでもありません…。 Vol.17に続く…

前日の事故にもめげずにパイユート鉱山に向かいました。パイユート鉱山はダメリ鉱山から車で10分程の場所にあります。

Tonyの義理の兄弟Jamesが案内してくれました。

パイユート鉱山はダメリより更に小規模な鉱山でした。辺りにはセージの爽やかな香りが立ち込め、神聖な雰囲気が漂っていました。

岩肌に、露出した脈状のターコイズが見えます。

パイユート鉱山でもめぼしい石は見つからず、重機も動かせないので、午後からまたダメリに鉱山に戻って、その後早めに街に戻りました。

この後もダメリ鉱山に行ったのですが、3日やそこらでは良い石が見つかるわけもなく、名残惜しいままオースチンを後にしました。

ずいぶん前の事で、記憶が曖昧ですが初めてのターコイズ鉱山に興奮していた事と、必死に消火活動をした事ははっきりと憶えています。百聞は一見にしかず、色々な情報を知っていても、現場を知る事が大事だという事を身をもって知りました。

3/1/2020 #0024 Journey to the desert Vol.11 To Damele and Paiute mine

火災は山ネズミがエンジンルームに小枝で巣を作っていて、エンジンをかけた時に引火した事が原因でした。ネズミにとって重機のエンジンルームは巣を作るのによっぽど適していたのでしょう。火を消して、3人でビッシリと詰め込まれた枝を取り除き、点検しましたが、重機のゴム部品の一部が炎によって溶けて使い物にならなくなっていました。

見学に来たつもりが、怒鳴られて火消しをさせられましたが、採掘現場の一員になったようで上々の気分でした。消火活動と後処理にずいぶん時間がかかって、気がつくとあっという間に正午になっていました。

とりあえず、全員空腹だったので、テーブルを広げてランチの時間。サンドイッチとフルーツの簡単なランチでしたが、初めての鉱山現場での食事はとても美味しかったです。

重機は動かせなくなりましたが、採掘は続きます。私もTonyの後ろをついて回り、何かないかと探しましたが所詮素人なので、何も見つからず…。

普段よりも逞しく見えるTonyの背中を追ってターコイズを探したのが、亡くなってしまった Tonyとの良い思い出です。

写真を眺めていると、彼の Hey young man! という声が聞こえてきそうな気がします。

翌日はパイユート鉱山へ行きました。
