“Lost Vote” Fuelled by my frustration with the lack of access, young black South Africans have to the internet (The door to the 4th industrial revolution). Data prices are so high that our use of the internet is limited to the superficial deconstructive elements of it... “anti-social” media, porn sites, following trends & buying into unrealistic manufactured standards of living... instead of watching tutorials... learning how to code, building apps, learning about cryptocurrency, starting & promoting our business etc. #datamustfall S/o @benmoyo for the reference image, a very important creative voice. Am I the only one shocked by the price increase from @CellC? Haibo😳 These are supposed to be discounted bundles. WTF! Before you suggest Telkom, I am not able to use it in the village because of network issues, @MTNZA and Cell C are my only options. Cell C used to be cheaper but now🤷 . . . #datamustfall #daylightrobbery https://www.instagram.com/p/CGm7LwAptCE/?igshid=19jy4jkzvtt55

#Datamustfall CEO salaries in SA-Here is the truth Staff Writer1 April 20192 Comments MTN recently published is annual report for the year ended 31 December 2018, revealing that CEO Rob Shuter receiveda total remuneration package of R42.9 million. Shuter is not the only South African telecoms CEO who earns a high salary: Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub got paid R50 million while Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko received R26 million. When these reports hit the media it always sparks debates about executive salaries and inequality in society. While these CEO salaries may seem excessive when looking at the average salary in South Africa, it is not a constructive way to analyse compensation. Advertisement Scroll to continue A more relevant assessment of CEO compensation is done through benchmarking peer salaries of similar positions around the globe. This assessment shows that local telecoms CEO salaries are in most cases lower than their counterparts in other countries. Global market for high-level skills South Africa is home to two of the world’s largest mobile operators, Vodacom and MTN, and these two powerhouses produce some of the world’s best and most sought-after executives. Vodacom and MTN’s executives can easily move to another country, which many of them have already done. In fact, before Shuter took the reins at MTN he was the CEO for Vodafone’s Europe Cluster. Joosub in turn was the CEO of Vodafone Spain before he returned to South Africa to run Vodacom. A person with the skillset to run a large telecommunications company is extremely hard to find – especially when the company has operations across Africa. Unless South African telecoms companies pay their top executives well, they will not attract the top talent. Eskom and the SAA serve as a warning of the alternative. Telecoms CEOs – Salaries across the globe A look at telecoms CEOs’ salaries across the globe reveals that local chief execs are at the lower end of the scale. Considering the challenges related to running a company with operations in multiple African countries, Shuter and Joosub are well worth the money they earn. I thought @youtube was data intensive but today l wanted to check and test for myself why ordinary folks are skeptical about using @instagram it did exhaust 1.2GB in a mere half an hour as you can see for yourself, l got my answer why is it legging behind in terms of figures here in #southafrica may be it is the networks ripping us as l buy 1GB a day using it mostly on @instagram l switched off everything except it then watched @babes_wodumo 'a interview with @somizi on the #freshbreakfast and @djfreshsa that was it with a couple of videos #datamustfall or be regulated by #icasa (at Gateway Theatre of Shopping VIP)

Is the #datamustfall’s #socialmediablackout boycotte worth it?
Tumblr media
Here’s my 2cents on the #datamustfall campaign. With the #datamustfall’s #socialmediablackout happening tomorrow (or today depending on when you are reading this - oh wait, you can’t because your data is off), and the trending hashtags #datamustfall and #socialmediablackout blowing up, all of this begs the question: is it all really worth it? I won’t lie, I was ready to keep my phone’s data off and only receive calls, but then I realized that it might not be all worth it after all. One day of a #socialmediablckout won’t make all the network providers magically drop their prices, but rather we should look at it from a strategic point that could benefit South Africa in the long-run internet-wise.
We could:
1) Go ahead with the #soialmediablackout, which will make the wait even longer than we want it to.
OR
2) As customers, to influence the prices - and that’s where social media plays a major role, giving you (the customer, or the subscriber in this case) the ability to cause a pricing war between all the network providers to provide the best pricing possible to you. How will this work?
Easy, if you are a customer and are receiving good or bad service, there are mediums (like twitter) that allow you to voice your opinion. For example, if you are receiving good service from “Service Provider A” then make a comment on how they make you feel as opposed to “Service Provider B“. After a while the prices will eventually decrease.
One thing that American advertising does so well in, is their ability to do research on their competitors and “call them out” in their adverts. What this method does is it puts pressure on the copetitor to offer better pricing and services than the next company.
In reality we all need internet, especially for job hunting and completing assignments, and we can be let down by such pricing due to finances. We may not be able to control the prices, but we may influence them. Now the ball is in your court, and the question is: How will you do it?
