I made them I think 4/5 years apart. and the first one doesn't look like Near at all lmao it resembles him but it still feels like he's an imposter trying to take his place (beyond birthday but make it for near)

but the second one, even if it's unfinished, you can tell it's him lmao

I'm writing this mellodramattic college AU and I think I encapsulated my thoughts on Near and Mello's relation in a scene which is basically

It's late and Mello wants a soda, but the can gets stuck in the vending machine. He makes a lot of noise, shakes it, kicks it (while imagining Near's face on it) and etc.

Near appears out of nowhere and asks him if he's done.

Mello is like "can't you ever leave me alone" and gets away from the vending machine. He tells him that he doesn't need his help, and Near says that he didn't mean to do that, he is there to buy a bottle of water, and Mello gets mad that he doesn't want help him.

They argue a bit and, in the end, Near nonchalantly gives him the coins he needs to buy something else and unstuck the soda.

So, I was thinking:

In "How to Read", L's "intelligence" stat is lower than Light's.

However, it seems that it's a mistranslation of the word "knowledge".

"In the original Japanese text, it's 知識(chisiki, knowledge), not 知能(chinou, intelligence)." (found it on reddit)

The reason why I think L's is lower is that it has to do with his knowledge of the Death Note and Shinigami (+ the Kira case as a whole?).

Because Near's is as high as Light's.

However, Near stated that he cannot surpass L, so, obviously, Light can't either.

So, I think their knowledge stat must be their default knowledge and what they know about this mass murder weapon (its potential and limits, etc.) and everything regarding Gods of Death.

when near says "your past" to mello, does that imply that mello was in another orphanage before being brought to the wammy's house? or what does that mean? I doubt he talks about mello's parents or relatives or anyone he lived with and got taken away from to be put in an orphanage.

and if he was talking about their years there, shouldn't he say "our past"? they were in the same place, weren't they? or does Near feel so distant from that orphanage that he doesn't think he was part of it at all?

but if it's some past unrelated to the wammy's house, how the hell does near know that? who told him? mello? because I imagine the kids at the wammy's, to conceal their identities, must not reveal their past, unless they really want to.

I have many questions. I want to know mello's backstory so bad.

I wish i could draw because I have this picture in my mind of Near making the Ls of cards fall and he's just there, surrounded by these falling cards, which symbolizes that he destroyed any of his previous definitions of how L should be and accepted that in the end he's the only L there.

funny how Near gets hate for things he didn't say or do, like people in the fandom hate him based on a character that doesn't even exists.

1) Near has never said he is better than L. He explicitly said that he is unable to surpass him, and let's not talk about the whole "copy of L" thing, because it's stupid.

2) He isn't emotionless. He stated countless of time how he felt (hurt and scared, for example), he let his team opt out if they wanted to and he was grateful to Mello and his team for everything they have done. (He is better than L in appreciating others, ngl)

The anime did a bad, horrible job in depicting him, and I will defend him until the day I die.

My man deserves better.
