The work above is from Regina Durante Jestrow’s current exhibition Free Form Connections at Dunedin Fine Art Center.
The artist’s statement about the exhibition-
This exhibition includes my organically shaped geometric art quilts from various series from 2020-23. I utilize improvisation, repeat patterns and shifts in scale while incorporating colors, textures, and structures representative of the diversity of the people and the natural surroundings of my current home in South Florida.
I use diversely toned second-hand, gifted, or saved fabrics and dyes from locally sourced plants and rust. Textiles are also manipulated with burning and staining with inks and acrylic paint. Other materials, such as neoprene, sequins, and faux leather, reference Miami’s pop culture.
Along with my constant interest in American Folk-Art Quilts, geometric-abstract artists from the mid to late twentieth century are my influencers, including Gees Bend quilters, Elizabeth Murray, Helen Frankenthaler, Anni Albers, and Gego. These artistic voices have driven me to create quilts of scale with strong personal symbolism and narrative.
This exhibition is on view until 8/13/23.

ASSISTED LIVING IN DUNEDIN
DUNEDIN
Dunedin, one of Florida’s oldest towns, is a picturesque Gulf Coast town not far from Tampa, with four miles of beaches, a picturesque waterfront, and a quaint, vibrant downtown. Dunedin offers numerous opportunities for art and sports appreciation, as well as outdoor recreation.
DUNEDIN FINE ART CENTER
The Dunedin Fine Art Center has been presenting art to locals of all ages for the past 30 years. Its four galleries host year-round exhibitions featuring works by national, regional, and local artists. There are 13 classrooms with art instruction for students ranging from 4 to 94 in age.
The David L. Mason Children’s Art Museum, which is part of the Center, has a different focus each year and offers hands-on experiences. The Palm Café inside the Center serves a delectable meal and superb coffee. The Gallery Gift Shop specializes in one-of-a-kind items. With so many events, it’s no surprise that the Center, rather than a traditional “village square,” is a popular neighborhood gathering spot.
TD BALLPARK
TD Ballpark, formerly named Florida Auto Exchange Stadium and Dunedin Stadium, is a baseball stadium built in 1990. It can currently hold 8,500 spectators. The stadium serves as the Toronto Blue Jays’ spring training home. It is also home to the Dunedin Blue Jays of Class A Florida State League, and the Falcons baseball team of Dunedin High School.
From 1977 to 1989, the Blue Jays played at Grant Field, which was built in 1930 and had a seating capacity of 3,417. In 1990, the City of Dunedin constructed at the exact location a new 6,106-seat stadium (which eventually became Dunedin Stadium and now TD Ballpark). They kept the Grant Field’s actual playing field and team clubhouses. Sports Illustrated formerly listed Dunedin Stadium as one of the best places in the country to see a Major League Baseball team’s spring training game.
HONEYMOON ISLAND STATE PARK
One of Florida’s most popular state parks is Honeymoon Island, which is a short drive from Tampa and features almost four miles of beaches as well as a three-mile trek through one of Florida’s few virgin slash pine forests. The walk is ideal for observing the island’s resident eagles, great horned owls, and osprey. Gopher tortoises, armadillos, and raccoons are among the island’s other inhabitants. Visitors can learn about the park’s nature and history at the Rotary Centennial Nature Center. Swimming, fishing, shell collecting, hiking, and biking are all popular activities on Honeymoon Island.
PINELLAS TRAIL
The Pinellas Trail, which runs from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs in Pasco County, is one of Florida’s most popular metropolitan routes. It is part of the Coast to Coast Connector, a trail network that will stretch 250 miles across Florida once completed. The rail trail connects Pinellas Trail to several county parks, villages, and coastal locations along the way. It is particularly popular with cyclists because it has numerous access points, parking facilities, and mile markers.
The trail passes several pedestrian bridges in the first 15 kilometers after leaving St. Petersburg, providing beautiful views of the surrounding area. The Cross Bayou Bridge, which spans Boca Ciega Bay, is the most picturesque. The towns of Largo, Clearwater, and Dunedin are located further north. The trail in Clearwater traverses large downtown sidewalks and a bike boulevard. It runs near stores, restaurants, bathrooms, and parking in Dunedin. The Gulf of Mexico is only a few blocks away, making it ideal for a quick stop.
CALADESI ISLAND STATE PARK
Caladesi Island State Park is one of the few remaining undeveloped islands off the coast of Florida. This picturesque, unspoiled island is only reachable by boat, but it is well worth the effort. It has some of the country’s most gorgeous beaches with towering palm trees. This park’s crystal blue water and solitude make it an ideal place to unwind in peace. If you visit during the week, you might even be able to have the beach to yourself.
Also available here are a few picnic pavilions, kayak rentals to explore the mangroves, and pathways across the park for a pleasant trek while looking for the park’s resident birds. Caladesi Park has a ferry that connects it to the nearby Honeymoon Island.
ASSISTED LIVING IN DUNEDIN
If you want to provide your old folks with fun activities and excellent wellness programs and senior living facilities, you might want to check out assisted living in Dunedin, Florida. This city, which is one the oldest in the state, offers various attractions and shopping and dining options you can also enjoy.

Delightfully different: Dunedin a distinctive stop in Florida
Tumblr media
Check out my latest culinary travel column in the Times Herald and other suburban Philadelphia newspapers. This link will take you there.......
https://www.timesherald.com/2021/07/02/delightfully-different-dunedin-a-distinctive-stop-in-florida/
“Delightfully different” Dunedin (done-ee-din, located in Florida), the often-stated words used by Julie Ward Bujalski, the mayor, best sum up what it’s like to both stay and live in this distinctive locale. It truly is an “eden” you’ll want to visit. After more than a year of “lockdown,” it’s time to start exploring what our great country has to offer.
From nearby Caledesi Island (voted one of the best beaches in America by Dr. Beach) and Honeymoon Island, to a Major League spring training stadium (home to Toronto Blue Jays) to an unrivaled fine arts center, including Food Arts programs where you can learn from chefs, tips and tricks that make artful food preparation a breeze, Dunedin has it all. The quaint yet excitingly vibrant downtown, voted “Best Little Walking Town in America” by Walking Magazine, percolating with unique boutiques and shops, art and eclectic dining experiences, is worthy of being on your bucket list of places to visit in the Sunshine State.
This charming “city” feels more like a historic town that celebrates community and legacy with the same zeal as it displays its stunning geographical location alongside the alluring Gulf of Mexico’s tranquil, turquoise waters. And part of that legacy includes the wonderfully located and beautifully appointed 83-room boutique Fenway Hotel https://www.fenwayhotel.com/ .
The hotel reopened in November 2018 after having played many different roles in Dunedins history since it first opened in 1927. It is an icon of the jazz age, playing host to musicians and legends during the times it operated as a hotel. It was the home to the first radio station in Pinellas County, where broadcasting occurred from the roof. Today, the Fenways’s Hi-Fi Rooftop bar is the place to be and be seen, especially at sunset. The jazz theme carries on throughout the hotel.
Food plays a part of Dunedin’s history, too. In the 1900s, the Skinner family was involved in the citrus industry and developed machinery to process oranges as well as citrus concentrate — you know, add two cans of water to the concentrate and the result is orange juice with all of the vitamin C. Here’s more about Dunedin’s citrus history https://bit.ly/3dqA5Om .
I began my food exploration at the hotel’s HEW Parlor & Chophouse. The name is an ode to Herman Everett Wendell, The Fenway’s original architect. To “hew” also means to cut or chop. Executive Chef Eric McHugh curated a menu including chophouse classics and his interpretation of comfort food. When asked what his specialty is, he responded, “cooking.” And, if you really want to see the cooking action, request to be seated at the chef’s dining bar. I started my HEW dinner with potato gnocchi, lightly tossed in a mixed mushroom ragu, topped with delicate homemade ricotta and pesto. The seared shrimp is accompanied by creamy polenta, slow roasted tomato, arugula salad, and corn with lemon caper butter. The soup du jour, Turkey Almandine, sounded like a strange combination, so of course I needed to try it. To my surprise, it worked. The broth-based soup is hearty, crunchy and has a complex flavor profile. Chock full of turkey, it had toasted almonds, Scottish rice, topped with chive oil, micro greens and tarragon. Chef Eric obliged my request for the recipe, at https://bit.ly/2vzkedh.
From the “Cuts & Chops” selections came a perfectly seasoned, pan-fried pork schnitzel with lemon aioli. The side of mixed grain salad (quinoa, cous cous, farro, edamame and roasted corn) is tossed in a flavorful but not overpowering dressing. For dessert, the Cherry Pop Float took me back to the teenage years when I was a soda jerk: cherry and chocolate ice cream, cherries and Dr. Brown’s Black Cherry soda. The goat cheese panna cotta was silky smooth, topped with fresh blackberry compote, lemon zest and thyme.
The intimate parlor bar at the entrance to HEW showcases an extensive whisky and scotch collection inspired by Dunedin’s Scottish heritage.
HEW’s breakfast menu has some interesting selections in addition to the basics. Joe’s Power Sandwich was my choice: egg whites, turkey sausage, tomato, avocado, roasted pepper and almond chimichurri. The chophouse concept is evident on the breakfast menu, too: Chophouse Omelet (shaved ribeye, Fontina cheese, roasted peppers, crispy shallots). Perhaps some of these dishes will still be on HEW’s menus when you visit since the chef’s creations change seasonally.
After breakfast, take a hotel bike and explore the 37-mile Pinellas Trail, which runs directly through the heart of Dunedin, one of Florida’s most popular urban pathways. Upon your return, pick up a freshly squeezed lemonade, limeade or orangeade at Lane’s Lemonade https://laneslemonade.com/ housed in a restored train boxcar on the trail, before going back to The Fenway for a swim in the pool.
Hungry for an in-room late night snack or drink? The artisan pantry features anything but ordinary delectable provisions.
Of course I wanted to explore the eclectic food scene in Dunedin. The waterfront setting of Bon Appetit Restaurant https://bonappetitrestaurant.com/ provides breathtaking views of Honeymoon and Caladesi islands. And, those picture-worthy sunsets over the gulf! I met some local friends for dinner and they wanted me to try the seafood tower for an appetizer to share. The freshest chilled 11/4-pound Maine lobster, stone crab claws, the largest shrimp I’ve ever seen, and oysters on the half shell were beautifully presented. For the entrée, it was Grouper Bon Appetit, one of the dishes in the Chef Recommendation section. The fresh fish is sautéed with cherry tomatoes, capers, feta and lemon butter. The feta added a flavorful twist to the dish. Every day, a different comfort food special is featured. One of my friends ordered the slowly braised boneless short ribs topped with leaf spinach and mushrooms. I’ll have to return for dinner on a Friday, for the shrimp etouffee with smoked sausage and three-cheese grits.
f you are too full but still have a sweet tooth, or like me you want to try a few desserts, the petite dessert options are just the right size. The key lime pie with a graham cracker crust and meringue top and the chocolate peanut butter torte (chocolate cake, peanut butter mousse, chocolate sauce and chopped peanuts) were my sweet endings. Wine connoisseurs won’t be disappointed with the reserve wine list.
The aroma of barbecue hit me while walking in the heart of Dunedin. I knew then, I would need to dine at The Dunedin Smokehouse. Wanting to try a few different meats, I chose “The Porker Combo” (3 meats/2 sides) from the “Build Your Own Combo” section. My selection: brisket, pulled chicken, pulled pork, hand cut fries and jalapeno-sweet potato cornbread with a paprika smoked honey butter to spread on it — delicious!
You’ll find the most interesting toppings for frankfurters at Hot Dogs on Main, 505 Main St. Offering both Brooklyn- and Chicago-style hot dogs, organic gluten-free turkey dogs, kosher and vegetarian dogs, there is something for everyone, at very affordable prices. How’s this for a creative dog: “The Greek Hound Dog” topped with cucumber, tomato, onion, feta, olives, tzatziki, pepperoncini and oregano, or the “B.L.T. Dog,” topped with bacon, lettuce and tomato. I stayed with the more common dog, “The Brooklyn Dog,” topped with sauerkraut and spicy mustard. I guess you can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but can’t take Brooklyn out of the boy. By the way, the owner, Susan Norton, also is from Brooklyn, but loves her life in Dunedin.
After a couple of hot dogs, walk a few yards to Kookie Krums , https://kookiekrums.com/ for a cup of coffee and a freshly baked cookie, cupcake, brownie or muffin. The bakery is known for its decadent cookie sandwiches filled with delicious buttercream. You might even decide to send a beautifully created cookie bouquet to someone special, or to yourself.
One morning, visit the Dunedin Coffee Co. & Bakery, 730 Broadway Ave. Choose from huge biscuits — buttermilk, sweet potato or cheddar chive — served with jam or homemade sausage gravy. The “Southern Bell” is an open-face buttermilk biscuit topped with two scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, melted cheddar cheese and chives. A variety of quiches are tempting, as are the mouth-watering cinnamon rolls. And, get your carrot cake scone while they last. The baristas are quite good at preparing your favorite coffee drinks, as well.
Dunedin also is home to Florida’s oldest microbrewery, Dunedin Brewery https://dunedinbrewery.com/ , 937 Douglas Ave. Beer aficionados will appreciate that this brewery has helped cultivate a hyper-local passion for beer that has inspired eight other breweries to open up within one square mile. Inquire about tours of the brew house. I was amazed by the number of different beers in their repertoire. The recent offerings: Chocolate Covered Cherry Imperial Stout (notes of sweet Oregon cherries, roasted cacao, milk chocolate), Apricot Peach Ale (fruit wheat beer, juicy, refreshing, fruitful). The beer flight includes four beers from the current brews. The food menu is as interesting as the beer choices. I ordered the made-to-order Southern Fried Pork Rinds, garnished with a slice of lime. The squeeze of lime adds another dimension to the rinds. Since the brewery won “the best wings” at the Wings, Beer and Baseball “Wing Night,” an order of Dunedin Brewery Wings was a must. They are marinated overnight, deep-fried, served naked with 2 dipping sauces: snakebite (medium spice) and the IPA blue cheese. The Fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds (breaded white cheddar curds with a side of buttermilk ranch dressing) piqued my interest. Like spice? The curds are also served jalapeno-style. The Chicken Salad sandwich — apricot peach ale-infused chicken salad prepared with celery, red onion and red grapes on toasted brioche (I chose the gluten-free bun) and a side of hand-cut French fries with a side of curry ketchup.
Dunedin might not have been on your bucket list of places for a Florida vacation, but one visit and you’ll be hooked like I am. For more on Dunedin, go to http://visitdunedinfl.com.
