Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 80 & 81 Subbed (Finalized)
(Previously: Episodes 77-79 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
80: Alice in Despairland
A beautiful transfer student named Alice has appeared at the Red dorm.  Kenzan goes crazy about Alice, but a doubtful Misawa comes to know of a puzzling rare card with the same name.*  That night, Judai finds out that Alice immensely detests duelists and is trying to capture Kenzan, leading Judai to duel Alice.  Alice summons zero-ATK doll parts one after another before summoning Doll Chimera, a doll that they haphazardly combine into.  With each attack Doll Chimera takes, its parts increase and its ATK steadily rises...
*This part seems to reference the bit from the end of 79 of Misawa researching the Alice in Despairland card--since this was included in one of these episode spoilers from the time, it looks like it really was cut from the episode more last-minute.
81: A Quiz Duel?! VS Quizzer Panel 9
Kanda the Quiz King, who has secretly fallen in love with Asuka, happens to find Asuka arguing with Judai and challenges him to a duel.  Kanda uses a Quiz deck based around activating the Quiz Hour Permanent Magic.  Once he does, he becomes cheery, as if his personality changed, and with each of Judai’s attacks, he presents him with a challenge as a quiz-show host would.  Judai clears the test-of-strength tasks, but gets the dueling-knowledge challenges completely wrong, causing his LP to fall...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Episodes 80 and 81 are now finalized! Two episodes more on the breather side after our Field Trip of Hell, as Judai and co get back to Duel Academia and run into a Duel Spirit from Wonderl--I mean, Despairland, whose card was mistreated and made it want revenge.  I do wonder if there would’ve been more nightmare fuel with the shot that was shown in 79′s TV airing that went unused in this episode, but Doll Chimera is plenty creepy on its own too.  81′s a favorite since the premise of Kanda’s deck is really unique, and I always did wish they’d print his cards, lol.  It’s also interesting because Kanda’s shy love for Asuka and the way he’s all “If you don’t stop this I’ll have to duel you” to Judai, as I mentioned before, is likely inspired by the Densha Otoko/”Train Man” story, down to the forum posts as he asks for love advice.  It was also nice to hear some OST we haven’t heard since Season 1, and Burstlady’s summon animation in this episode is one of my favorites, making her look pretty cool, lol.
Part of the delay here was handling a fair amount of card/animation fixes and translation edits (for 81) between both episodes, including a few big card ones for episode 80; more details below the cut, for the interested. :)
Enjoy, folks! These should be up on NAC in a day or two.  Next time, we’ll be tackling episodes 82 and 83--Misawa wanting to join the Society of Light(?!) and the return of one interesting Principal--so stay tuned for those! Once those are done, we’ll be hitting the GeneX arc of Season 2, which I’m looking forward to revisiting.
Fixes/Edits! (80)
After Judai has Burstlady attack Alice the Wandering Bisque Doll and takes damage from its effect, as Alice explains that it’ll then be Special-Summoned to the opposing field, we see the Alice Bisque Doll summoned in Defense Mode, but the card under her is reversed--the top of the card should be on the left, as it is now upon fixing it.  I explained the editing process in AfterEffects in this post, which included learning more about the Mesh Warp effect which was fun to play with, lol.  I also added an Alice Bisque Doll and Burstlady proxy to Judai’s Disk over the blank cards originally there, while in Rome.
As Alice has Doll Part Blue attack Burstlady, the card under Alice the Wandering Bisque Doll is Eshila the Lovely Bisque Doll’s--which is played near the end of the episode! Fixed it in AfterEffects by applying an Alice Bisque Doll proxy and then masking her above it, then masking Doll Part Blue’s arm back as it moves over the card.
As Alice then takes damage from the above attack--intentionally, trying to get the Alice Bisque Doll back on her field--she has a blank Attack-Mode card where Doll Part Blue should be in Monster Zone 2 on her Disk, and is also missing the newly summoned Defense-Mode Doll Part Pink in Zone 4.  Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a Doll Part Blue proxy in Zone 2 and one for Doll Part Pink in Defense Mode in Zone 4.
After taking damage from the Alice Bisque Doll’s effect above, she then takes her doll back, but as she starts to transition over to Alice’s field, the card under her in Defense Mode is reversed again.  Fixed as noted in the post linked to in edit #1, this time accounting for moving the edits made, lol.
Shortly after the above, Alice activates Marionette Burial, but we see that Doll Part Red in her Disk’s Monster Zone 1 is placed as though in Defense Mode but is actually in Attack Mode (Red is still in Defense Mode).  Fixed by applying a Defense-Mode proxy above it in AfterEffects, fading it out as the screen fades into the Marionette Burial close-up.
As Judai draws after Doll Chimera’s summoned, he holds out his drawn card, Rallis the Stargazing Bird, but for a quick four frames before the front of the card is shown, the card’s back border is darker than usual (after having its regular light orange border while Judai draws and holds it).  Quickly fixed in Photoshop by repainting it the light orange, then inserting the fix into the video in Sony Vegas.
After Judai summons Rallis, Alice notes that her Doll Chimera has more ATK, before Judai pops in on a split-screen to say that they’ll “see about that.” But originally, before Judai’s side of the split-screen appears, the screen pans to the right from Alice for 3-4 frames before Judai’s side just appears halfway into sliding into the screen, as it then slides in for two more frames for a full split-screen; usually, there’d be a more gradual slide-in as the screen panned from Alice, which is how I fixed this in Sony Vegas--I made it so Judai’s side of the split-screen starts sliding in as the screen pans away from Alice so the two move simultaneously into the split-screen.
As Judai has Thunder Giant attack Doll Chimera, Alice notes that the latter has more ATK, but Judai slides into a split-screen to say he’ll grab hope from any despair; as the split-screen slides out before Judai then activates Battle By Two, Alice’s side of the split-screen fully slides out before Judai’s.  Fixed in Sony Vegas by timing it so that it slides out with Judai’s.
As Misawa cheers on Battle By Two doubling Thunder Giant’s ATK, he oddly seems to get two mouths--or more his lip flaps were added on top of a previous lip-flap or something, putting his mouth a bit off-center on his face.  Fixed it in Photoshop by moving his open mouth over the previous one and then moving it along the panning shot in Vegas.
Right after #9, Judai orders Thunder Giant to attack, but has a moment of “mouth over jacket sleeve” happen for a quick few frames.  Fixed in Photoshop by coloring his jacket sleeve over the extra mouth, then inserting it into the video in Vegas.
A few scenes later, after Judai orders Rallis to attack the Alice Bisque Doll, we see her taking the attack before being destroyed, but for one last time, the card under her is reversed.  Fixed in AfterEffects per the post in #1, but I also removed the ghosting that happens here from the DVDRip source, as Rallis attacking blends into the shot of the Alice Bisque Doll taking the hit; luckily, it cycles twice through 8-ish frames of Rallis’s blasts, so I was able to just use the second cycle--once Rallis is no longer visible--over the first.
After Judai uses Spy Hero to get a Magic Card to use from Alice’s Cemetery, we see the Spy Hero Solid Vision snoop onto Alice’s side to grab the card, but the one that slips out and flies to Judai’s hand is actually Alice the Wandering Bisque Doll! Yet in the very next shot, we see that it’s actually Doll Hammer that Judai gets.  Actually picked up on this one after I got most of the work on 80 done, lol.  Fixed the inconsistency in AfterEffects by applying a Doll Hammer proxy over the Alice Bisque Doll card for the frames it’s visible in, masking the Disk parts above the Cemetery back over the card.
Later, Alice has her Eshila the Lovely Bisque Doll attack Judai directly, but Judai uses Kuriboh-Summoning Flute to get Winged Kuriboh out, activating Evolutionary Wings immediately after--but the Winged Kuriboh he just summoned isn’t on his Disk.  Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a Winged Kuriboh proxy to Monster Zone 4 on his Disk (as Winged Kuriboh gets summoned in the Zone in front of the one the Flute was set on, Evolutionary Wings was set in M/T Zone 2, and nothing was in the Zone 3 column) and moving it with his Disk.
In the preview, as we see Kanda looking at Asuka through his binoculars, if you look closely as the screen pans, you can see the background moving near the bottom of the screen--that’s because the black of the binoculars doesn’t extend all the way down.  Fixed for 81 proper in Photoshop by just filling that space in with black, then inserting the fix into the video in Vegas, which was then applied to the preview in 80.
Also in the preview, as we see Kanda’s Obelisk 10 flipping up, a weird error happens in a few quick frames where, as the Obelisk 10 jumps around, the 10 on it will shift to the position it’s going to be in in the next frame.  This one happens 2-3 times in 81, too.  Fixed it there first by holding the frame just before the shift happens to keep the 10 in place, then masking out the board piece face so the fire behind it still changes with the animation, and then applying this fixed clip in the preview.
Fixes/Edits! (81)
For the hardsub, I translated the online thread Shou is reading, and translated Kanda’s screen with Judai’s reply to his comment.  I also applied the translation to Kanda’s screen as we see him typing a response to Judai, masking Kanda’s arm and hand over it as he moves.
As we see Kanda looking at Asuka through his binoculars after the OP, if you look closely as the screen pans, you can see the background moving near the bottom of the screen, due to the black of the binoculars not extending all the way down.  As noted in 80′s list, I fixed it in 81 first before using it in 80′s 81 preview, using Photoshop to just fill in that space with black, then inserting the fix into the video in Vegas. (There is another animation error just after this, where the dual binocular view becomes singular on an Asuka close-up, but not much I can do with that, lol.)
As we see Kanda’s Obelisk 10 flipping up after Sparkman attacks it, a weird error happens in a few quick frames where, as the Obelisk 10 jumps around, the 10 on it will shift to the position it’s going to be in in the next frame.  As noted in 80′s list, I fixed it in 81 first before using it in 80′s 81 preview, using Vegas to hold the frame just before the shift happens to keep the 10 in place, then masking out the board piece face so the fire behind it still changes with the animation.
After Featherman attacks Ra 10, while the Ra 10 board piece jumps around after flipping up, the same as #3 happens across a few frames where the 10 on its face will shift to the position it’ll be in in the next frame.  As with #3, fixed in each case in Vegas by holding the frame just before the shift happens to keep the 10 in place, then masking out the board piece’s face so the light/fire behind it still moves with the animation.
After Judai bites his tongue from the tongue-twister challenge he gets through Ra 10 (RIP), just before he jumps from the pain, we see that the Featherman he should have in Monster Zone 2 on his Disk is missing for a few frames.  Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a Featherman proxy in one frame, then using Vegas to slightly zoom out said frame.
As Kanda starts his Right or Left Quiz with Judai, we see him holding the card behind his back for a few frames--but during this, the United Resistance card at the bottom of his deck is facing right-side-up despite his deck facing left-to-right on his Disk.  Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a proxy facing such that the flavor text box is visible (since he’d draw it with his fingers on the bottom there) and moving it as he moves.
After the eyecatch, as Judai has Burstlady attack another Osiris Quiz Panel, two things happen: first, we see that her shoulder strap is missing, and then we see both that and that her shoulder is miscolored in the color of her outfit.  Fixed both in Photoshop as detailed here (you can see the other frames edited there), working the fixed frames into the video in Vegas.
After Judai correctly answers the challenge from the Osiris panel he attacked, Kanda pops in on a split-screen to congratulate him but pose a new one for him through his Queschange Trap Card--but an error is present here, as the table in front of Judai is visible on Kanda’s side of the split-screen (thus far, his table’s been shown to his left, offscreen from his side in this shot).  I did want to try fixing this, especially since the table actually disappears a frame before Kanda and Judai slide off the split-screen--so I could use Kanda’s torso there as a drawing reference--but without a reference for his moving arms and hand as he first pops in, it wasn’t really doable.  I did fix the latter issue though, making this error consistent by masking out Kanda’s side of the split-screen with the table in view in Vegas and then sliding it out to keep it there.
After Judai activates Miracle Fusion, as Burstlady and Featherman float into the swirling vortex for it, there’s this odd patch of pink coloring on Burstlady’s torso for about 11 frames as she floats in.  I fixed it in Photoshop by coloring that patch in with her skin color and then working those frames into the footage in Vegas.
In the preview for episode 82, an issue pops up as Misawa confronts Saiou where he moves up in the shot and some of the background is visible under him (a similar error happened in ep. 60 as Asuka activated Ritual Weapon, where her hand slides into the shot but seems to float in front of her).  This issue pops up in episode 82 proper; I fixed it there first by just cropping the shot in Vegas such that none of the background is visible under Misawa, and then applying that shot for the translated preview, before then fixing it for the DVDRip’s preview by using that fix, then masking in the Japanese “Preview” text over the new footage.
Another generic Rank 8 fodder for Gimmick Puppets, but this one actually has a nice second effect. You have to destroy it to use it, though.
Her character design is based off animé-only Gimmick Puppet Princess, which had a cameo in the end of Season 2, and Dreary Doll.
I really hoped Quattro would get a nice main deck monster with actual stats, but I guess not. Hopefully he will come to Duel Links, so they can shift his deck’s theme to Rituals instead, like what they did with Alexis in ARC-V.
Edit: Her name references Alice’s cards from GX. Specifically, Eshila the Lovely Bisque Doll.
