that man most likely girlbossed iron exit clauses. the moment ferrari don't stick to their promises, he would likely start to engage with other offers immediately. he's in his prime, and if he loses all faith in his own team, and he cannot do anything about it, he could leave.

he's not dumb, like some people on ig or twitter make it sound like that. but he's actually really smart when it comes to negotiating from what we've seen, and we can see it on little details, like charles getting a separate contract renewal without carlos. or when they did not specify the years which is ODD as hell, def not the usual practise.

there are tiny details you can see, and im still definitely seated to see how this situation evolves. people are saying "rip lestappengate" like it's over but i believe it's quite the opposite, we're now just seeing the result of it.

charles publicly flirted with red bull to gain advantage for his ferrari negotiations, this super extra announcement was the result -- ferrari is letting him take the lead in car development, they are building a winning car FOR charles (did not mention carlos) so there are signs they may be going in the direction of charles as a leader.

only time will tell, but lestappengate essentially was about giving charles a team with a championship winning car to fight max properly on track, and if he can achieve that at his own team with this new contract, then good for him.

if not, red bull still keeps showing interest in charles, so kicking off lestappengate 2.0 wouldn't be unrealistic.

i am extremely doubtful about the lewis -> ferrari rumor. for a few reasons:

charles has (according to rumors— trusted ones) signed a contract akin to a first driver one. and we've seen the stuff about him being the preferred driver in terms of development.

lewis would never sign a #2 contract. actually he wouldn't ever be asked to sign a #2 contract. 😭 that's the goat we're talking about.

in terms of if it Did happen, and correct me if im wrong here, but based on that f1tv graphic, they're on the opposite sides of the understeer/oversteer spectrum (because the older cars were traditionally understeery iirc)

will buxton was the first person to start this rumor mill, then formu1a uno posted what it actually was. just yesterday andretti's bid for 2025 was rejected, leading to (understandable) outrage from the fandom due to a number of reasons. will is employed by f1. this Could be a little distraction tactic.

and for the reasons it could happen:

lewis has always wanted to drive the red car. it may be his last stint in the sport (or not, but he maybe saw an opportunity with maybe a decline in merc's development and a rise in ferrari's)

sainz contract negotiations aren't going well. this would mean looking for a suitable successor to that ferrari seat (which was probably alex albon)

our dear tp fred is insane (/pos) and he's willing to try something like this out.

all in all, again i don't see it happening, these are just my 2 cents on the matter going off of rumors im seeing so. oops?

Sometimes I think about how at the Ferrari movie premiere, Christian Horner said ‘I am sure they wanna keep hold of him and they’d be crazy if they didn’t’ when asked about charles renewal contract, almost with this threatening look like he is ready to pounce the moment Ferrari fuck up again; and Toto playing clueless like ‘Oh I don’t know anything about a contract but why wouldn’t Ferrari sign him’ because I am pretty sure both of them approached Charles this year 👀 and the funny part being no one was asking them about Carlos lmao

they both approached him at the beginning of the year, charles declined mercedes immediately. then i believe helmut leaked the unsuccessful attempt to get charles around may.

then charles started again flirting with ferrari after the padel date event, which was after qatar, and was seen being friendly with christian horner, other RB employees, and max during the triple header. back in vegas, he hung out more with max than his own teammate. that's when i believe there were negotiations taking place, i still believe @tsarinablogs's theory that charles did, in fact, sign a pre-contract with red bull following the singapore/cota/brazil shit show, and actually showed ferrari he was aiming to act on it - i believe even the questions about their rivarly with max during press conferences were plugged in by red bull to further spread their lestappen teammate duo agenda.

it switched around abu dhabi, when fred made the statements about charles being the leader they need, and his subtle carlos shade (after he almost cost them the cost cap breach).

charles, however, definitely gained more individual autonomy out of that pressure he put on ferrari and also is now able to do many things that his previous ferrari contract did not allow him (more personal PR than the ferrari one, wearing his clothing brand, hanging out with people that aren't exactly tifosi approved like max in the paddock).

so yeah, i believe charles truly played his cards REALLY well and managed to get that contract he wanted. i believe christian's obsession with charles still makes him believe that if ferrari failed, he could snatch him, which probably would be possible with the exit iron clauses.

also charles nor ferrari not dislosing the length of the contract definitely is a bit sus, so there's that

charles renewed! yay! but was it an ordinary renewal announcement? hell no! so let's unpack that!

first interesting thing about the announcement was the leaking of it in the morning by spanish press. "Carlos Miquel leaked the news about the announcement earlier today; we can see what type of articles he wrote before, as we know he has links with the sainz family" which was very odd by itself because even the closest journalists of ferrari didn't know. it's all part of fred's 2024 strategy of tightening the access to information from maranello.

so the leak obviously came from the carlos gang who knew about it internally. why would they leak it? questionable. people discuss it's to gain public sympathy for carlos who is still struggling to lock a contract (and holds his singapore win as the great reason why he shouldn't be dropped).

then we got new information today about carlos talking with audi:

this is him applying the charles 2023 strategy when he used the red bull move allegations to put pressure on ferrari between qatar-las vegas (also known as the lestappengate)

now moving on, what was odd about the charles contract? not specifying its length. we got multiple quotes: CHARLES: "Today we are announcing that i'm signing for more years" FERRARI: "Charles Leclerc who therefore will continue to drive for the Italian team in the Formula 1 World Championship beyond the 2024 season."" CHARLES: "I’m very pleased to know that I will be wearing the Scuderia Ferrari race suit for several more seasons to come." the way the length is not specified is simply odd. it's not usual for a driver/team to not specify the timeline. only lance has that, but for different reasons as you may know. pr statements like these are SO perfectly curated, they go through multiple people, so this is a very deliberate choice. how it will unpack? we'll have to see.

charles took creative control of the announcement. while ferrari posted the classic graphic - a standard for renewals in f1 for other teams, charles went above and beyond and with his creative PR team put together a personal video that he even composed a song for. INSANITY. what does it say? compared to other announcements, he made it his own. and ferrari let him. why? because now he can, and they let him do it because he most likely negotiated all that and they just have to support him and not be the main source of his public pr -- he now has his own PR moves that he prioritizes over the ferrari ones.

f1 is going crazy! they posted a supercut of charles moments which is not a standard move at all, usually they just post the renewal graphic. they also teased the announcement with a few charles focused clips in the past week leading up to today.

why? well, it comes down to Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of F1 who has a lot of influence on the sport. he was vocal about a missing rivalry in the sport, and how the red bull dominance decreased interest in the sport as of recent. charles is exactly what they need, they want people to promise an intense red bull/ferrari rivalry so pushing charles on social platforms helps form the narrative.

can i just say... his announcement was most likely rushed because you can notice the colour grading in the video (that's very oddly charles inspired, dare i say) is almost non existent? they literally put on it the black and white filter to most likely save time in post production and rush it out asap... its kinda oooodd

It seems like they want in on the hype that Ferrari got with Charles’ renewal and how that’s making people believe in Ferrari’s future more.

But they also don’t quite understand why people were so hype in the first place.

(Also kinda funny how the official F1 account went just as crazy with Charles’ renewal and then nothing for anyone else.)

you know what kinda pissed me off?

charles managed to do something crazy and historical in the modern F1 when he girlbossed with THE ferrari a contract without dislosing its length (most likely to gain advantage with his exit clauses) and then lando goes and does the same thing so people now call it a "trend".

first of all, it was never a trend. it was only done in the past by lance stroll and as much as i respect him, we know it's because his dad owns his team.

for charles to do it with ferrari - the team with the strongest guidelines around how a driver can act while respesenting their team because of their rich history, was the most unexpected element of his renewal.

lando and mclaren most likely did this to follow the pattern and be mysterious. and that kinda does not sit right with me.

my dearest @valyrfia had a conspiracy that seems to be turning out to be true as of late, there seem to be friendship cliques forming around the paddock as of late (like carlando vs lestappen). i may elaborate later on the full explanation to not out her complete theory but it DOES seem to be turning out true and im seated to see how it looks in the 2024 season

mclaren just announced norris’ extension

Curious to hear your PR thoughts on this? I find it interesting that mclaren decided to announce norris’ extension so close with leclerc’s. Shouldnt they want to wait for a quieter news day to drop the bomb so they can get more attention? Are they trying to prove which driver can draw more clicks?

i unpacked it a bit here but i want to focus on the similarities between the lando x charles renewal videos. WE HAVE A LOT

charles' video used the maranello factory for b-roll shots, lando was shooting PR assets today/yesterday (and this video) so the shot list in certain cases ended up looking similar

2. the same b&w grain effect was used for stylistically edited cutaways

3. you can see charles' video took a lot of time in post because it included heavy GFX that took time. the only GFX element in lando's video was just LANDO title without any additional editing, that could be done in premiere pro in 5 seconds

honorary mentions:

same motion blur transition was used in the renewal videos. for charles, this is a stylistic choice that is connected to his brand because antoine from his team uses it as one of his statement editing choices. charles' editing was, however, more elaborate and lando's transitions took less time in the edit.

charles' video used mutliple color grading presets that match his pictures on his feed (his editor, videographer, and camera person are all antoine so he has the ability to sync his visual brand with LUTs). lando's video is only in black and white with no significant color grading to save time in post. you can, for example, see how the renewal video looked vs this teaser they used for it. one is color graded, the other is not. why? rushing the post production.

charles' announcement came out in horizontal youtube format, in vertical for reels AND a special tiktok cut that included burnt in captions that are specific for the platform. lando's only had one version, no captions. why? again, they did not have time to do so.

it's just baffling to me as a person with editing experience, you can pinpoint so many details that are INSANE about the lando video and how close it is to the one charles did.

Oh my god you're so right. If Charles wins the WDC, not only will he be cemented in F1 history, but he would have won the WDC by beating Lewis Hamilton in the same car.

Charles is going for the possibly the hardest achievement to win a WDC ever. Having to defeat his 7 time WDC teammate, and a prime Max in a Red Bull.

He would have to fight for every last millisecond on the track and will absorb ten years of stress but good god if he wins it that will be the greatest reward in the world, and that season will likely be one of the most insane F1 seasons ever.

i mean, it's a fact that charles is insane. he has no fear and is always up for a challenge. if his machinery/strategy dont fail him, he will be on fire on that track.

honestly, even without lewis, getting 1 WDC at ferrari would probably make him as immortal in the F1 hall of fame as max, simply because a WDC at ferrari is a major achievement (after years without a title for them).

however, getting the title while beating lewis AND max? now that would be a story that would not get forgotten
