um. ronance.
Ronance, you say? RONANCE?!???
Um. I love them. They have taken over my life and tbh i wish i loved them less!
Why do I love them so much? I honestly dont know and I wish I did so i could replicate it elsewhere. I think it starts with Nancy Wheeler being just the most intriguing and compelling character to me. She's underpowered and underestimated and nobody would ever expect her to take on ANY of this stuff but she just keeps doing it. She's decided that she is Barb's avenger and the party's protector and she WORKS and she STUDIES and she SHOOTS GUNS and she ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT DESERVE TO HAVE FUN EVER (according to her and only her.)
And then Robin shows up and she is sarcastic and awkward and strange and extremely opposite of Nancy in every superficial way but the things they have in common? Obscene bravery. Loyalty. BIG BRAINS. This almost off-putting relentlessness, although they channel it in different ways.
And when they pick people to be their people they stick with it TO THE DEATH. So the idea of them picking each other? The power in that? And also the way each of them feels unloveable and monstrous, but they both love so hard? Immoveable object unstoppable force etc.
I feel like they would have a relationship that almost everybody outside the party would struggle to understand, and I feel like they simply would not give a fuck about that.
They could take over the world together if either of them were vaguely interested in that but instead I think they will spend their energy researching strange phenomena and showering their pets and houseplants with love.

okay bit of a crackpot theory here and idk if this has been asked before but was nancy an asymptomatic carrier in my piece of land? i just reread the series and robins run in with the vines at the start of the apocalypse seemed to have slowly stayed in her system and bit her in the ass later. and nancy in her own origin fic was attacked by vines in the forest and it burned her skin. could it be possible that the upside down disease/illness could of stayed with her but instead of effecting her slowly, it infected other people somehow? did nancy potentially start the apocalypse?? maybe???
Oooh I love this ask so much because it lets me explain my apocalypse in self indulgent (vague) detail!
LORE DROP!
I'll say that wasn't my intention to have Nancy be infected all along, but it did occur to me that it was possible and that it was a possible interpretation people might come to, and I wanted to leave it open to interpretation.
This is why Nancy doesn't have like a tester like they had in the show, because I don't want us to know 100% whether Nancy is a carrier or whether Robin is already a carrier when she gets there.
The outbreak in this AU is meant to be less literal than TLOU. It's not as simple as a zombie apocalypse. It's not as simple as getting bitten, although that will certainly do it. (Also for the record, bitten people turn into demogorgons but like, human sized ones. Not the giant ones from the show. So vaguely clicker levels of dangerous. But there ARE giant ones also. Whether those are people who got bitten a long time ago and grew more monstrous over time or something else entirely is also up for speculation.)
I imagine this outbreak as being more eldritch and unexplainable and more insidious, this is what the descriptions of people's behavior changing is hinting at. A sort of Flaying like in the show, that works slowly or quickly and nobody really knows how, but a connection to the greater hive mind of whatever the Upside Down is in this world that makes people want to feed it, in whatever way. Eventually flayed people will turn, but often they die before that can happen due to their own violence. (This is vaguely inspired by part of the book The Passage.)
I will say, since it's never specified in Into Dust, that Barb was attacked and bitten and dragged into that little pocket of Upside Down, to turn or to be absorbed into the organism of it. To help it grow, one way or another. It was just a little mini outbreak. There were probably others that nobody lived to tell about, or that like Nancy nobody believed them when they tried to tell. The government ABSOLUTELY knew though, by the way, and they covered it up.
I think of the vines as being sort of spore spreaders and incubators, seeking out life to turn and consume. And I think the actual Outbreak Day outbreak happens somewhat similarly to the show where it's the result of a spoilage of some important food staple (not beans, clearly) that some vines got into that results in a sort of mass turning event.
I will say for certain that Nancy does not cause the apocalypse. She's just the first living witness to it. It's brewing, somewhere under the surface, until finally it breaks free. Even if she's infected, she's not contagious in any traditional way.
So maybe Nancy has been infected all along or maybe never at all or maybe she infected herself at any point over the years in all of her chopping and burning of the vines around her property and she's asymptomatic or just hasn't developed symptoms yet. Maybe she's dying too at the end and she just doesn't know it. And Maybe Robin has been infected since the night of the fire, or maybe that happened more recently. And maybe EVERYONE is infected, by now, and they are all just ticking time bombs. Or maybe not.
They don't know, and I think it's a better story if we don't know either. Because if there's one moment you can point to and say "that right there, that's where your fate was sealed, that's when you were doomed" it makes it harder to appreciate the moments after that, which are what really matters in this story IMO.
Thank you so much for this ask!

bro bro bro. heres a bro question whats your favourite beers
This is an interesting question that I am going to give a terribly long and unsatisfying answer to.
The state of beer in America right now is ridiculous. I mean this in a good way. There are breweries EVERYWHERE now. Beer distribution in america used to be extremely limited by laws that were lobbied for by a few huge distribution companies, so basically you would see most of the same beers on the shelves everywhere in the country besides a few local exceptions. So it was easy to have a favorite beer because if you went to the store there were maybe 50 beers if it was a nice store and they were always basically the same.
But craft breweries have popped off in the last 20 years or so, and it has changed everything, because where there were 50 beers now there are hundreds, and if you go straight to the breweries (and why wouldnt you if you live near one?) they have limited batches of beers you might love but never drink again if they never brew it again. Breweries still have "flagship" beers, meaning the one beer of theirs youre likely to see on store shelves or on tap at a bar, but now we have access to the whole line of what they make at the brewery.
So I dont really have a favorite beer anymore, because beer is just extremely good in general now but also many of the beers i find myself loving are fleeting experiences. And even if i did have favorite beers it wouldnt be very helpful to anybody who doesnt live within a few states of me because you are almost always better off just going someplace local and finding your own favorites than spending time seeking out holy grails of beer from other places that probably arent going to be much better!
I will say that drinking beers outside at Hill Farmstead in Vermont is my favorite thing in the world to do besides fucking. It's on the top of a rolling mountain with a view forever and it smells like cow shit in the best possible way and all of their beers are sublime.
Cambridge Brewing Company has been around since like 1990 or something, sort of the original boston-area brew pub, and personally I think they are underrated. Their beers are consistently good and the food is also consistently good and I like the bartenders there. The beer there wont change your life but there are always dogs on the patio and Ive wasted a lot of wonderful days there.
I love Jack's Abby in framingham massachusetts because they mostly make lagers, and I am at an age where getting drunk isnt really the point anymore, so I would rather drink 4 lighter beers and hang out than drink 2 heavy beers and have to lie down. Everything Jack's Abby makes is good. Perfect lawnmower/shower beers. Perfect hangout beers. Its like if Budweiser actually tasted good. You can drink 6 of them and still act like a civilized person.
That's stuff I like. But my main beer advice is to check out whatever breweries are closest to you, because fresh beer is good beer.

not push my monster!nancy agenda i wish you would write a fic where nancy is a big sad losery monster of some sort 🥺🥺🥺 🙏🙏🙏 on my hands and knees 🧛‍♀️🐺👽🤖👻👹🧙‍♀️🧟‍♀️🧜‍♀️ cmonnn monster nancyy think of the angsttt the juicy angst mmmm think of self loathing mmmm think of the hurt/comfort potential here cmonnnn 🥺🥺🥺🥺
🥺👍💖❗
I dont think I would know how to write this??? Like i understand the metaphor of monsters and how that applies to Nancy and I understand that stories about monsters are always stories about people but in my mind Nancy is just... not a monster? So it goes to kind of a Beauty and the Beast place which is a sort the obvious choice and also a copout because the whole point would be that she isnt really a monster?
I like monster stories! I will read them and let people convince me that Nancy Wheeler is a monster in these worlds they create but I don't know if I can create a world where Nancy Wheeler is a monster because to me she is the opposite of a monster. And I I just feel like, for me and the stories i like to tell, I am more interested in writing about the pieces of monstrousness people have in them than in the pieces of humanity monsters have in them, even if they are maybe the same thing after all?
i wish YOU would write this! Convince me that Nancy Wheeler is a monster!

okay further beer bro question. whats your favourite type of beer?
(im on the wikipedia page for beer styles and theres SOOO MANY????)
I like almost anything if its done well?
The boring truth is that I normally go for pilsners these days. They're low abv and easy to drink and they get a bad rap because a lot of mass produced shitty beer calls itself pilsner, but good pilsner is great! It's not as loud as an IPA or a big imperial stout or whatever, but subtlety is not the same as blandness. Beer culture is very bro-y and that can lead to this idea that bigger more extreme beers are better, and there is definitely a place for those beers but if you don't train your palate in the opposite direction too, towards subtlety, you are missing out on a lot.
So I drink more pilsners and lagers than anything. But I do like IPAs and imperial stouts, and I also like dry porters and malty doppelbocks and saisons and wheat beers and sours (although in my aged decrepitude i can only really drink one sour a day or the heartburn will get me). I will try anything. I will try the peanut butter and jelly sour and the 12% abv barleywine, and then I will go back to my pilsners and be happy.
The one style I dont really like, mostly due to market saturation, is New England IPAs, or hazy IPAs. They look and taste like orange juice. They arent BAD but they are fucking everywhere around here and they all taste the same to me and they are so boring. This is not an insult if you like them, lots of people like them apparently thats why theres so many of them! But that is my least favorite kind of beer. I will drink one if you hand it to me but I would always prefer something else.

please let me know how miss nancy wheeler fares in diablo 4 world. what class is she. is she a little blood covered bastard. spill the details. also how are u finding diablo 4 so far ive always wanted to get into hack n slash games and im a lil curious abt the new diablo game. ik diablo 2 is like peoples number one best game ever in the world ever ever. (hm maybe i shld play that hmmm)
Nancy Wheeler is a rogue. She is indeed very blood covered.
I have legit just started (i played a few hours of the beta a month or so ago too) so its hard to say whether its like Good or not, but im enjoying it so far! These games are really mostly about how good the endgame content is so I wont know how much i love it for a while.
Diablo 2 is great, i loved it back in the day, but going back to it now it feels very old, even the remastered version it just feels dated to me. But a lot of people fully disagree with me so your mileage may vary.
I was a Diablo 3 enjoyer, which is a controversial take, a lot of people hated that game because it was not exactly the same as Diablo 2, but i found the endgame loop to be just exactly the kind of thing I enjoy, so it was great in my opinion.
So far for Diablo 4 i can say the graphics and sound design and all the superficial stuff is really nice, and the gameplay is fun so far!
Anyway Nancy Wheeler is about to fight a boss I should probably help her!

have you tried out balders gate 3? if so how are you finding it??? (also is nancy wheeler making her debut in the bg3 universe?????)
Yes! It's so good! Im not very far into it so far but i am loving it and it is making miss dnd so badly tbh.
Im actually not playing as Nancy Wheeler. Im a halfling gloomstalker ranger named Ozzabella Coins which is a character i made for a dnd campaign that fell apart by like level 3 so I am playing as her now since i never really got a chance to IRL.
Maybe my second playthrough will be a Nancy Wheeler run.

okay i gotta ask what on earth is pink drink
pink drink is any drink that is pink. a lot of drinks are pink it turns out! and a lot of pink drinks are delicious!
its also a reference to that time on Pretty Little Liars when Hanna I think went to a lesbian club to spy on Shauna Costumeshop and somebody threw a pink drink at her and then when she was explaining to her mother why she smelled like booze her mom said "Pink drink? Is that code for something gay?"
(when i say it what i mean is that i am literally drinking a pink drink but it also might be code for something gay.)
