Conceptually I don't even mind flatpak but despite dramatically simplifying everything about packaging, it still develops inscrutable issues that have long been solved by traditional packaging. The trade-off is of course that traditional packaging is basically a huge waste of time and effort for 90% of desktop packages.

Appimage has actually been pretty good for this because it's less focused on isolation but part of the appeal of flatpak is the whole flatpak composability thing flathub wants you to do.

I get that there are disadvantages to sandboxing but also some applications have no disadvantages or should absolutely be sandboxed. Do you have any idea how much of a security risk most web browsers are? Not if you sandbox that shit.

And there's just no reason my GameCube emulator needs to touch the rest of my system anyways. Flatpaks are good, actually.

Fuck snaps though, absolutely hate snaps.

at some point I might be motivated enough to attempt a solution to the flatpak themeing problem

probably an external script that copies the relevant config info for gtk and qt (is there a way to trigger it when the user changes their theme settings ?)

and an internal flatpak application that can read that file, notify if said theme needs installing, and apply it internally

idk how that all works but I'll worry about that if I decide to give this problem a go at some point

RenderDoc the block

Today I solved the blocking issue in my Macana OpenGL project. I did it using RenderDoc, an open-source graphics debugger suggested to me by a colleague.

Since I'm a complete noob at RenderDoc (and not very proficient at OpenGL either), it took me awhile to gain traction. I didn't use the tool very effectively. But the key virtue of a good debugger is that helps users visualize what's going on. Somehow in the flood of details, I noticed that my problematic texture (which didn't have mipmaps) used a filter intended for mipmaps. And that proved to be my issue.

Meanwhile, I'm making progress configuring my new Linux Mint environment. I finally got the Cinnamon panel (analogous with the Windows taskbar) configured the way I like. I must've spent hours; it seems to me the Cinnamon UI could be a lot more intuitive.

Also I discovered I had 2 copies of LibreOffice: one installed from Apt and another installed from Flatpak. I only need one copy, so I'm removing the older (Apt) install to free up disk space.
