This Totally isn’t Familiar at All
Artist Statement: For this project I wanted to interpret failure as that of our country’s inability to learn history’s lesson. I chose to wear a pink triangle to assert the fact that caging humans is ugly fascist behavior comparable to what happened to Jewish people, LGBTQ people, and other minorities in World War II Germany. As a Jewish LGBTQ person, I think it is important for us to reflect, even if it causes us discomfort.

Artist Statement: “Vanishing and Becoming, my dinner”
For this project I wanted to take the idea of “Vanishing and Becoming” quite literally through the life of my tomato plant harvest, as well as some associated chaos that can come along with transforming something into something else. My videos are all original because I wanted this to be a personal project from the perspective of the artist. My audio is all royalty free use sound effects compiled through Adobe Premiere. I’m inspired by the chaotic nature of DADA art, as well as mainstream ASMR videos. I kept my lighting according to my environment, with some adjustments to the saturation and highlights to emphasize the natural shadows of both environments. I have distorted the audio slightly for a more “natural” and chaotic effect.

Project 2 Artist Statement
For this GIF series, I wanted to highlight what I like to call “New Americana”. I work for Wood Stickers in Denver Colorado and operate a UV flatbed printer on a part time basis. I firmly believe the emphasis on small businesses here in Denver has caused a resurgence in jobs like this, a new “factory” job. Each machine in the warehouse bares its intricacies, and it is up to the person, the machinist, to give these items a purpose and propel the business and the worker forward. The GIFs were originally videos taken during a typical work day.

Project 1: Selections
I decided to select images from political and chaotic themes among images of meals and television to convey how saturated the world is and has always been with the destruction of democracy yet we still somehow seem to ignore this and function through our day. I’m inspired by postmodernism and dada art in particular. To show the passage of time I used different aged televisions, as well as different “meals” being depicted.

Ai Wei Wei “Never Sorry” Response
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ai Wei Wei’s “Never Sorry” depicts the process in which the artist became driven to create the art that the world has found most controversial. In his “So Sorry” exhibition in Munich, the artist uses backpacks as a building facade to channel the viewer’s thoughts on the massive earthquake tragedy that occurred in the Sechuan province of China that injured and killed many school age children. The artist goes as far as he can to push the political envelope to expose people around the world of the happenings in communist China. To show the impermanence of objects, as well as show a stark break in tradition, the artist has created a series of freshly painted Neolithic Chinese vases with common American icons such as the Coca Cola logo. Ai Wei Wei harnesses the power of the internet and social media to give more power to his ideas, while also accentuating his work.

Reading #4 and Artist is Present Review
This reading goes into the origin and role performance art has played. Being a Dada enthusiast, I enjoyed the information relating to the Dada poetry and futurism’s role in perfomance art. I appreciate the vagueness of this medium and that there are no actual limits. The only criticism for it would be the “fine art” argument. Being that we’ve been pushing the envelope on the big “what is art” question for years, its validity is in its existence.
This is actually my second time watching The Artist is Present. The film goes deep into the process behind Abramovic’s method, and the world which has influenced her unique style of performance. The idea of strength in vulnerability hits home as I believe most with a feminist point of view can understand.

Reading#2 response
The readings on the history of the GIF, and how it has formed its own space in the art world begins to explain the popularity of this format today and why it matters as an art form. Since the creation of the GIF, we have been fascinated with its repetitive properties that seem to only enhance as the work is being looked at. Animated GIFS have provided humor and solace in our current chaotic world, and are a way for people on the internet to communicate a message without always using words. It makes sense to use in an art space because this format is relatable. In terms of selling animated gifs as a work of art, I find it interesting as it is a medium normally in direct public, viral view that is attempting to be “owned.” I find it hard to understand how an art investor may accrue value on this over time, but do agree that you can sell anything as an art investment if you can conjure a reason to.
