Francie’s death in “Alias”... JJ Abrams you will pay for your crimes!
This one destroyed me more than Charlie from Fringe’s death!! Francie had so much to live for. She was maybe finding love with Will and her business she had started was just starting to make a profit. Sydney had been telling her about this guy at work that she had a crush on and Francie was such a champion for them but she never got to meet Vaughn!! This crushed me!! 😭😭

Alias - ‘Truth Be Told’ Review
Tumblr media
Jack: "I guess we'll just have to learn to trust each other."
This stunning pilot was wildly impressive. The action just rocketed along, and the torture scenes actually shocked me. It sucked me in and got me hooked.
"You are schizophrenic," her unknowing friend Francie told Sydney near the beginning of this episode, and she pretty much said it all; the main theme of the show is, of course, Sydney Bristow's double life. The wholesome graduate student with nice friends and a normal job working for a bank is constantly contrasted with the dangerous existence of a secret agent. When Sydney got engaged and told her fiance the truth about herself, she caused her two worlds to collide.

Some more Alias trivia. Today: Francie Calfo.
According to her Wiki page, she was an:
''MBA student at the University of L.A.; withdrew to open her own restaurant''.
This on it's own (without bringing in any info from Recruited) is confusing, because a Google search (and I'll go ahead and admit that Google is not always an accurate source of information) says that an MBA degree usually takes two years to complete. Now, we already know that Sydney went to school for eight years and when we see Francie in season 1, Sydney is in her seventh year of schooling - so what's Francie still doing there?
Here's where Recruited comes into play. In it, Francie is a declared psych major. Further in the book series, Francie babysat the kids of one of the top food critics in L.A. in hopes that being a nanny to the two kids would help her to pick up tips along the way of opening her own restaurant one day [Free Fall]. So, my guess is that Francie completed her psych major and went for another degree or just switched to the MBA before dropping out to open her own place. A curious thought: what happened to the restaurant (which according to the Wiki page, is called Deep Inside.)? Is it still open after the death of both Francies? Did it get put on the market and someone bought it, or did someone Francie knew - like Sydney - take over the ownership of the restaurant and just keep on the staff?
There is a small discrepancy between the Wiki page and Recruited. The Wiki page says:
''Francie and Sydney had apparently been close friends since childhood.''
What episode they got that from, I don't remember, but according to the book, it says:
When she had been paired up with Francie at a special freshman orientation held at the beginning of summer, Sydney had been shy. She'd never been one to have lots of friends, and the bubbly, outgoing Francie had intimidated her. But there was something about Francie that made Sydney open up, and soon she had found herself spilling all sorts of things to her. Francie had confided in her as well, and by the time fall term began the two were fast friends - and roommates.

47 Days of Alias (29/47): What You Love The Most—Family
Specifically Jack and Sydney, but that’s not the only important family theme at work here. Before repairing her biological relationships, Sydney makes her own family—Will, Francie, Dixon, etc. They are her family before Jack really learns how to be. Eventually Irina comes back and Nadia is introduced, and by the end, Sydney’s family is her, Vaughn, and her children. Sydney’s family is constantly evolving and equally emphasizes the importance of chosen family, the one that you’re not born into, and I love every moment of it. (pictures: twoevilmonks.org)

I'm opening a restaurant. I just decided. I feel like I've been sitting around, waiting for my life to start. I'm on that couch, like, twelve hours a day. I’m about to graduate, but then what? I don't have a plan. Here's a plan.

Other Notes:
Vaughn doesn’t try to keep his illness secret. Good for him.
Sydney’s all okay with Project Christmas, apparently. That the plotline is now apparently a Will story feels like a demotion, even if I’m glad it gives him something to do.
Sydney’s apparently okay with Jack, too. What were the last three episodes there for, then?
Abbie! Given how important Will’s job last season was, I’m glad to see at least one character from that circle return.
Mentioned but not shown last season, we finally get to see Alice, Vaughn’s girlfriend and then ex. On one hand, I’m really happy they didn’t try to make her a TV show smokeshow.  On the other hand, she feels very much like a character existing solely to create romantic angst the show does not need.  Irina’s conversations with Vaughn about his feelings for Sydney feel the same way.
The crux of this episode is that Sydney is coerced to hand over Sloane to Sark so that he can be killed, in exchange for the antidote to the virus that is killing Vaughn. The fact that this is presented as a shocking moral dilemma that no right-minded person would consider is ridiculous in theory, and only more so in execution, as we have characters like Kendall asserting, in all seriousness, that “American intelligence agents are not in the business of committing murder” —an excellent candidate for most unintentionally funny line in the series. Alias’ sense of right and wrong has always been incoherent, and here that’s stretched to the breaking point.
While Sloane being in hot water with the Alliance after SD-6′s recent failures is somewhat consistent with what we’ve seen this season, it also doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Are those failures disappointing?  Sure. That said, they should also be a drop in the bucket, given what we’ve been told of SD-6′s operations. Just because Sydney’s missions are all we see doesn’t mean it’s all that’s going on, show.
Where to start with that Japan sequence. With the writers deciding that Japan means geishas? With the yellowface, and the assertion that Sydney can somehow pass as Japanese? With Jennifer Garner’s painful command of the language?  With the music, which is exactly like what you’d expect it to be, given everything else? I can’t say it’s worse than the brownface sequence last season, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not racist as fuck.
Tumblr media
Let’s be clear: the twist at the end, where it turns out that, yeah, Sark did not intend to kill Sloane at all, is still very good. Not only is it genuinely surprising while still making sense, it’s exciting and manages to keep the general status quo will also changing the details in very important ways. It is not, however, nearly enough to make up for the episode’s many other problems.

“See the thing about rats is they're clever. You have to outthink them. You can't really just leave out cheese. You have to leave the good stuff. The heavy duty stuff; the stuff that they want. It's the only way they're gonna come out. Otherwise you're just wasting your time.” -Francie Calfo (@realmerrindungey) Alias S01E20 2020 is the year of the Rat. The first of the 12 Chinese Zodiacs. It’s my year. 🐀 PS. The Survivor buff I’m wearing is from the YAWA tribe of Survivor Heroes vs Healers vs Hustlers. It’s a Fijian word that means distant, far, or remote. (via Lucy Liu to Star in 'Why Women Kill' at CBS All Access | Hollywood Reporter)
She will segue from her role on CBS' 'Elementary' to Marc Cherry's dark comedy for the streaming service.
Lucy Liu will stay in the CBS family following the end of Elementaryin 2019.
The actress and director will star in CBS All Access' Why Women Kill, a darkly comedic drama from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry. The show follows three women from three different eras — a 1960s housewife, a 1980s socialite and a lawyer in 2018 — each dealing with infidelity in their marriages. It will examine how the roles of women have changed, but their reaction to betrayal has not.
Liu will play Simone, an elegant, stylish woman who is the picture of urbane confidence and moves through the world as if it were a delightful movie starring her. Smugly superior, a woman for whom appearances mean everything, she's seemingly happily married to her indulgent husband, Karl, who thinks she's simply fabulous. Despite nagging premonitions, Simone is devastated and her world upended when she learns Karl is cheating on her.
CBS All Access ordered Why Women Kill straight to series in September. It is Cherry's first show since Devious Maids, which ran on Lifetime from 2013-16, and his first for a streaming service. The series also marks a reunion between Cherry and CBS All Access executive vp originals Julie McNamara, who developed Desperate Housewives when she was at ABC.
"Having worked with Marc 15 years ago on Desperate Housewives, it is clear he has captured lightning in a bottle again with the depiction of three women who are so richly drawn that they defy expectations at every turn," McNamara said in announcing the series order. "Why Women Kill poses powerful cultural questions with Marc's inimitable, biting wit, and we look forward to taking viewers on this wild ride."
Cherry will executive produce Why Women Kill with Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo of Imagine Television (the show is the first under a co-financing partnership between Imagine and CBS Television Studios). Michael Hanel and Mindy Schultheis of Acme Productions will also exec produce, along with director Marc Webb.
Liu has played Joan Watson on CBS' Elementary for six seasons; the show's upcoming seventh season, slated for later this year, will be its last. She also has directed several episodes, along with installments of Luke Cage and USA's Graceland. Liu is repped by Framework Entertainment, Untitled Entertainment, ICM Partners and Schreck Rose.
Why Women Kill doesn't yet have a premiere date. It will join a slate of CBS All Access originals that includes The Good Fight; Star Trek: Discovery and a number of related shows; Tell Me a Story; No Activity; the upcoming Twilight Zone reboot from Jordan Peele; an adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand; and the time-spanning drama Interrogation.
