Un sujet de la vie quotidienne, de la vie du peuple des campagnes, genre qui va devenir de plus en plus répandu au XIXe siècle, surtout chez les peintres romantiques qui dédaignent le traitement des sujets nobles réclamés par les commanditaires parisiens conventionnels. Ces peintres documentalistes ont livré ainsi des témoignages inestimables sur les mœurs culinaires (mais pas seulement )du "petit peuple "comme on disait alors, occupant le créneau dans lequel la photographie naissante allait exceller quelques années plus tard.
