So, my latest obsession is the Great Canadian Baking Show. It's very obviously one of the many Great British Bake Off spin-offs (they have to use the Baking Show moniker because Pillsbury has a monopoly on the Bake Off term in both the US and Canada), up to and including the musical cues.
But the challenges are much more on par with the early GBBO seasons in tone. The hosts are supportive and gently joshing in a Mel and Sue vibe, and the judges give feedback that is critical but also explains, "If you just did XYZ, that would elevate this to a winning bake." The technicals have actual instructions, which leave out juuust enough details to test the bakers' knowledge of how flavors and baking techniques work without being like, "make a lemon meringue pie" as the sole instruction.
And also! The bakes are regularly multi-cultural in origin, and the judges are very open to different flavors. One of the technicals was Jamaican beef patties with an accompanying hot sauce, and one of the judges was genuinely excited to see how many of the scotch bonnet peppers they'd provided that each of the bakers would use. Paul Hollywood would never.
The current season is super accessible on YouTube if you just search for "Great Canadian Baking Show S07Exx" where the "xx" is the episode number, 8 in all. Can't promise that'll continue to be the case, but for now, it's a solid, accessible way to watch it outside of Canada.
Just like with GBBO, I've fallen in love with so many of these bakers and by the 3rd episode was bummed to see any of them leave, but the final 3 absolutely deserved their place in the tent, as did this season's winner.

If you're tired of Great British Bakeoff fuckery like Mexican Week but it left a friendly-reality-competition-sized hole in your heart, you can also watch the same format but with flowers 💐 (Full Bloom, The Big Flower Fight), jewelry 💍 (All That Glitters), pottery🍯 (Great Pottery Throw Down), glassblowing 🍾 (Blown Away) and woodworking 🪵 (Good With Wood aka Handmade, which even has Mel Giedroyc on it).
There are also like a dozen other bakeoffs in other countries. Canada and Australia are my faves (I haven't watched the non-English language ones yet bc I can't read subtitles during work).
[Don't watch the 1st season of Australia with Kerry Vincent it is a desecration of the Bake Off name worse than anything Paul Hollywood has ever done. Straya completely course corrects after that though. Do watch the first two seasons of Canada with Dan Levy hosting and channeling all his David Rose energy into it.]
If I'm forgetting any please let me know, I am a bottomless pit of content.

The Great Canadian Baking Show Is a Pile of Wet Dough
The CBC promised a homemade alternative to The Great British Bake Off. The show we got has nothing meaningful to say about the country
In order to differentiate itself from the British version, it often reaches for kitsch. The first season’s “Canada Week” was especially egregious. When one of the hosts announced the technical challenge—maple cream sandwiched between two maple-leaf cookies—she declared that “the only thing more Canadian than that is if Céline Dion rode in on a moose drinking a brewski!” But there is, in fact, one thing more Canadian than that, which the camera immediately cut to—a scathing polite chuckle.

For the @schittscreekdrabbleblog word of the week.
Laser
Patrick is laser-focused on decorating cookies when David approaches.
“I made extra for you,” Patrick tells him without looking.
“You know me too well,” David replies, devouring one. “Oh my God! These are amazing.”
“It’s Mom’s recipe.”
“Can I marry her?”
“No,” Patrick smiles. “But I’m available.”
David laughs. They’ve been flirting since the contest started and he knows it’s fake, but it will look cute on TV, so he plays along.
“Wow, not even a date first?”
Devastating, hopeful eyes fix David in place. “Dinner, then?”
It’s not real, right? Just in case… “Win, and you've got a deal.”

I got to be on a game show! 😃 I don’t know who was more excited for Family Feud, me or my daughter. She came along and was soooo stoked to meet our opponents from The Great Canadian Baking Show. This was only 3 weeks after Celeste was born so I think Im about half awake. I’ll be appearing alongside some of my Heartland family! We'll be playing in support of the Wild Horses of Alberta Society. Be sure to watch it all unfold on Sept 12 at 7:30pm (8 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem.
