Luigi Pericle: a rediscovered and returned artist to the world
WHO IS LUIGI PERICLE Luigi Pericle is an atypical figure in the art scene of the second half of the 20th century. Born in Basel in 1916, from Italian father and French mother, he was a painter, illustrator, literary, intellectual and multifaceted mind that escapes any classification. His works entered the European art circuit of the 1960s thanks to the support of Martin Summers, gallerist and curator at the Arthur tooth & Sons Gallery in London, but also thanks to the admiration of collectors and art critics, such as Sir Herbert Read, co-founder of the Institute of Contemporary Art in London.
The artist also experienced success as a cartoonist when in 1951 he invented “Max”, the marmot protagonist of the comics without text and destined to become famous in Europe, the United States and Japan.
After many successes, at the end of the Seventies, Luigi Pericle decided to abandon the world of art and exhibitions to devote himself to his artistic research, free of constraints and a lifestyle of vernissage and worldliness. His voluntary isolation is consistent with his aspiration to a life of study and meditation, but characterized above all by a continuous creative search, which leads him to creation, between the Seventies and Eighties, of a series of works on canvas and masonite, chine and drawings.
The life of Luigi Pericle passes, therefore, from a worldly life of exhibitions and important art galleries to a golden imprisonment, characterized by a fervent artistic, literary, astrological, philosophical and theosophical productivity. His house, closed for fifteen years after his death, kept the memory of an artist and his works but also an immense library, notebooks full of quotations and Japanese ideograms, Astronomical symbols, homeopathic combinations and an autobiographical novel that retraces his life and his artistic and spiritual formation. An incredible treasure that has now returned to the world.
THE REDISCOVERY OF LUIGI PERICLE “The real discovery is not to find new territories, but to see them with new eyes” – Marcel Proust It is with this quote that curator Chiara Gatti introduced the first world retrospective dedicated to Luigi Pericle at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice. This sentence perfectly describes what happened when Andrea and Greta Biasca-Caroni saw what guarded the house they had just purchased. When the works of Luigi Pericle re-emerged from the rooms and cellars of his house in Ascona it was indispensable that the eyes of those who discovered this treasure of art could recognize him, to understand what history was hidden behind those canvases, those drawings, those notebooks full of annotations.
His painting technique was very refined and made me doubt that it really was painting when I saw the works on display. I had to approach them, observe them in detail, look at them in the light to understand that Luigi Pericle, through overlapping veils, wanted to represent the immaterial and the essential. When I saw the works of Luigi Pericle and discovered his history I could not help but think of the fascination for the spirituality that characterized the avant-garde of the early 20th century. The book“the spiritual in the art” of Kandinsky is the most striking example of this close relationship between art, philosophy and spirituality, in which the artist proposes himself as the prophet of an art that is the expression of the intangible world and of the interiority.
For Kandinsky the first years of the twentieth century coincide with the birth of a new art, which necessarily should have been a spiritual art. Then, however, will come the abstract, the Second World, abstract expressionism, Pop Art and many other ways of making art, which seem to forget that tension towards the essential. Luigi Pericle was born six years after the publication of Kandinsky’s book and, in a certain sense, he confirms that a philosophical and deeply spiritual thought has never abandoned the world of art. Luigi Pericle was influenced by esoteric theosophy and doctrines, alchemy and Eastern cultures. He breathed the mystical air of Monte Verità, the hill above Ascona and the place he chose for his retreat. A territory full of spirituality and where, already in the early twentieth century, the famous community of Ida Hofmann and Heinrich Oedenkoven was created, who preached a way of life in harmony with creation and in contrast with industrialized society.
On the Hill of Mount Verità landed all the European counterculture of the time, from Herman Hesse to Paul Klee. A group of pacifists, anarchists, theologians, poets, bohemians, vegetarians and much more who left an indelible mark in that place and whose charm Luigi Pericle could not resist, despite having arrived in Ascona when by now the community of intellectuals and idealists had dissolved. His home, then, was perhaps the last bastion of a’deeply spiritual art, which spanned all the twentieth century and spoke to the soul of the spectators opening wide the doors to emotions.
