I know Tony was forced by the Court's threats to do some of the stuff he did. But there are many little moments of cruelty, such as this, that weren't strictly necessary at all. Was the Court forcing him at gunpoint to continually humiliate Annie and make her life harder at every opportunity?

Kat counts as a goddess at this point o.O
Tumblr media
Its pretty much foreshadowed since the moment the robots started calling her an angel, but it’s getting REAL. She has powers now too! i wonder if the chip is her achilles heel? RIP her relationship with Paz though 😔

Court relocation is most likely a one-way trip. Considering Kat loves her friend so much she literally broke laws of time to save her, and Annie can't go, she's probably not travelling because she won't abandon her. It seems kinda obvious that in timeline where she never meets Annie, she does go, therefore Robo-Angel is somehow connected to whatever court is going to try to do there.
Perhaps Robo-Angel form is less a metaphor and more of a material thing. The complete opposite of what Kat was doing with making robots human. Perhaps not as a plan of cutting off from Ether, but a good old "if you want to change the world (make it a completely predictable place), start from yourself". Kat is a very good person, but considering a damn Bodhisattva managed to get convinced into leading the shadow men, I am sure they have their own persuasive arguments for her.

Someone on the SA forums said that to salvage the comic "everything post-Jeanne would need to be chopped off and re-written", which really left me thinking. I think The Tree individually is fantastic and only failed because the comic backpedalled so hard on Tony being abusive and Annie traumatized, and it's now obvious that somehow Tom meant for Tony to only seem initially "bad" but actually be misunderstood and Annie being immature and not actually traumatized...
Yeah, "The Tree" is so good - in a vacuum. Everything about it is perfectly executed. It's just in hindsight that it starts to look bad.
The thing is, and I have a hard time articulating this so bear with me: I can see a version of Gunnerkrigg Court where I could empathize with Tony and even forgive him. Handled better, more carefully, with a lighter hand and a more nuanced point of view from the author, the Annie-Tony storyline could've been incredible. It's just that the comic beats you over the head with "everything Tony did is fine because Annie totally forgives him and doesn't care, and she's fine and not traumatized actually, and she deserved everything she got, and everyone just thinks she's traumatized because they're busybodies who won't butt out and who simply don't get it, including the readers." Not only does that drive readers away, it's also just a really shoddy way to tell this story. It's a disservice to the character Annie was and the character her father could've been.
Of course, that storyline isn't the only thing wrong with the comic. Almost everything post-Jeanne has been really poorly handled, yeah. A trainwreck in extreme slow motion. And it just keeps getting worse and more incoherent.

Checked the gunnerkrigg court tag and finally i'm not the only one who thinks the comic is shit these days. Anyone knows what happened? Apparently there used to be editors to keep it halfway normal?
The whole "my neglectful dad is literally neurodivergent??" arc was the ultimate jump the shark moment.

Gunnerkrigg is getting really interesting really quickly! Every single plot thread collapsing simultaneously!
A lot of stuff gets spun off over the various chapters, like, we haven't really dealt with the psychopomps in a while, Ysengrin has been dead for a while at this point, hell, Jeanne and the Anna waters have been gone for a while too.
It's like a boss rush for Annie, I guess. She will get to the end and encounter an enormous City Face and if you defeat him he will eat the forest seeds that were destroying the court. Calling it now.
