I’m having a Josh bestie moment here…
You’re having a bad day, the emotions have been like a rollercoaster for you. Stress has been eating away at you slowly. You aren’t sure how or what you can do to soothe yourself and just relax. But I would imagine that Josh wouldn’t let you sit in your thoughts for too long. He’s not one to watch you struggle, he’d probably feel compelled to help you. Whether you want it or not.
“Do you want a hug?” He’d suddenly ask out of the blue.
You turn to look, confusion all over your face “What?”
Chewing on the inside of his cheek “You need a hug.” He sets his cup down on the counter before slowly opening his arms.
Your brow is slightly arched, feeling a little hesitant. Letting your vulnerability show was never your strong suit. With a wave of your hand, “Josh, I’m alright I-“
Hes just shaking his head, signaling you to come to him. “Y/N just take the hug.” He takes one of your hands as he pulls you close to him. His arms wrap around you, his body's warmth like the coziest blanket. He holds you close, the side of his head nestled next to yours.
You stand there for a few moments until slowly wrapping your arms around him too.
He'd be there for you. Holding you tight if you needed to cry and let it all out.
He'd just want to be your comfort; your safe space.

sunshine daydream — chapter four
Tumblr media
Read on AO3 | Masterlist
chapter one | chapter two | chapter three
Series Summary: Friends can go on platonic vacations to cosy lakeside cabins, right?
Chapter Summary: You and Sam enjoy the newness and wonder of being together as the rain continues to fall on your cosy cabin.
Pairings: Sam Kiszka x Reader | Genre: fluff, friends to lovers, mutual pining | Word Count: 3.4k | Chapter Warnings: non-graphic smut (minors begone!)
A/N: Good grief. It's been, what, five whole months since I posted the last chapter of this fic? Granted, there's been a lot going on, but still. I'm so thankful for your patience and enthusiasm as you've waited for the end of Sammy and Birdie's "cabin fic". I hope you love it, and I hope it's worth the wait! I love y'all very much <3
Tumblr media
Back on the porch, you wrung out your t-shirt while you waited for Sam to get back with towels for the two of you. Rain continued to fall in heavy sheets, thunder rolling over the lake until it was a near constant sound. You touched your fingers to your lips, feeling Sam’s kisses; you laughed softly to yourself, wondering if you were in a dream.
A moment later, Sam came back out to the porch and tripped over his own feet in his haste to bring you a towel. You laughed. No, you weren’t in a dream; life really was just this good.
“You’re so mean,” he chided, though he couldn’t hide his lopsided smile. He gently patted the corner of his towel across your face to dry the rain on your cheeks. “I had to shuffle around on a towel the whole way through the house so I didn’t drip everywhere, and you’re laughing at me.”
You grinned. “Why didn’t you just strip? Put your clothes in the tub?”
“I know we’ve established that we’re going to do something about the sexual tension between us,” he said sagely, “but I wasn’t sure I should go full frontal the first time you saw me after our love confession.”
You smirked and started unbuttoning his soaked shirt. “I don’t know,” you mused. “Could have been entertaining.”
He blushed, and it was so endearing that you stood up on tiptoes to kiss him.
“Well, if you like the idea...” He kissed you back. “We could probably arrange it.”
You hummed. “I do like the idea. Can we arrange it in the shower?”
“We can arrange it anywhere you want, honey.”
Both of you undressed to your underwear, taking your time pressing kisses to each other’s skin and delighting in the feeling of your closeness. Sam was perfectly content to let you set the pace, patient and gentle with you as you explored each other.
He kissed his way down your body, over your breasts, across your tummy, kneeling in front of you like an act of worship. His hands were gentle as he helped you shimmy out of your jean shorts, and your breath caught in your chest when he kissed the junction of your hip and your thigh.
He smiled up at you. “I love it when you do that.”
“Do what?”
“That little gasp. You always do it when I get close to you.”
You blushed. “No I don’t.”
He grinned. “Yes, you do. It’s so cute.”
He stood and kissed you thoroughly, and despite your protest, you felt your breath hitch at the feel of him.
“See?” he teased, sweet and affectionate. “It’s like you’re surprised by how much you want me.”
You pressed a kiss to his collarbone. “No one could be surprised by how much I want you, Sam.”
He took you by the hips and pulled you close, kissing you until you saw stars. He brushed his hair out of the way every so often until he finally decided to put it up in a ponytail.
“No, wait.” You took his wrist in a gentle grip. “Leave your hair down. Please.”
He did as you said, letting his rain-darkened curls cascade over his shoulders again. You ran your fingers through it.
“It’s so pretty like this,” you said, almost reverently.
He gave you a bashful smile, his cheeks pinking. “Oh. Well, thank you.”
You held his face in your hands and kissed him, basking in the way he melted under your touch. He wrapped his arms around your waist and held you close, sweet and comforting even as his fingers slipped under the back of your bra.
When you finally made it upstairs and into the shower, you spent a long time pressing close under the warm water. Sam was so gentle; he’d been rowdy and goofy his whole life, but you’d only rarely seen this side of him that treated you like you were something breakable, something precious.
The water ran cold after a while, and neither of you bothered to get dressed after you toweled off. You felt a strange sense of nervousness join your excitement and pleasure as he kissed you and walked you back towards the bed; somehow, under the glow of the fairy lights and with the bed so open and inviting, the reality of the thing hit you square in the chest. You were about to be completely vulnerable with your best friend in the whole world. With Sam. You loved him, and the idea of complete vulnerability with him was a little frightening.
“Lay down, pretty girl,” he said, easing you back onto the bed. “Let me take care of you.”
Your heart was beating fair to burst as he stood at the foot of the bed, and you closed your knees in a sudden burst of shyness.
“Sam,” you said softly, your voice wobbling a little as he started to trail kisses down your body.
He looked up, and he shook his head a little to clear the haze of desire.
“What’s wrong?” he asked. “You alright?”
You bit your lip and nodded. “Yeah, I just... I’m just a little nervous.” You loved him so much it was almost overwhelming, and you needed to see his face while you were together, at least right now.
He smiled and moved so he was hovering over you, brushing your hair back from your face.
“May I kiss you?” he asked.
“Please,” you said, softening at his patient request. He kissed your face, gentle and slow, easing your nerves.
“We can go slow,” he said. “I want to do whatever you want to do, birdie.”
You framed his face with your hands. “I want...” You blushed. “I want...”
He gave a soft laugh. “It’s only me, sweetheart. Don’t be shy. Tell me what you want.”
You pressed your face against his neck. “I want to kiss you, the first time we do anything. I want you close.”
“Okay, love,” he said gently. “I’ll stay right up here with you.” His fingers moved closer to your heat. “Is this okay?”
You shivered at his touch, moving closer to his hand. “Yes.”
“Good girl,” he praised. “You keep telling me what you want, okay? And don’t be afraid to tell me if I do something you don’t like.”
You didn’t think there was any danger of that, but you nodded to show you understood. He started to move his long fingers, and you sighed against his mouth.
“Sam,” you breathed.
You felt his smile when he kissed you.
“I love you,” he said. “I love you very much.”
You gave him a bashful smile. “I love you very much, too.”
He drew you out with skill and tenderness, paying attention to every cue you gave him with your voice and your body. It wasn’t like a movie, picture-perfect; it was uncoordinated and enthusiastic and full of laughter, tender and goofy just like the two of you had always been with each other. He set you at ease with how relaxed he was; he cracked jokes and was his same easygoing self, generous with his compliments and praise, smiley and simply happy to be with you.
It didn’t take long for either of you, and you didn’t attribute that to your masterful skills so much as how eager and willing you were to please each other. Afterwards, you found out that Sam liked to be cuddled; he lay wrapped up in your arms in bed, his even breaths warm against your collarbone, content to let you slowly brush your fingers through his hair. He would have fallen asleep if you hadn’t asked him to kiss you again, and all thought of sleep went right out of his head as he grinned and kissed you so lazily and thoroughly you saw stars.
“You’re so sweet, birdie,” he said, running the pad of his thumb over your cheek. “Making all those pretty sounds for me when I kiss you. You like it when I kiss you?”
You could only nod, mute, blissed out on his touch and his kisses. He chuckled and kissed you again.
“Sweet girl,” he said gently. “I love you.”
You gave him a shy smile. “I love you too, Sammy.”
You gave him a last quick kiss before you sat back on your heels to try and finger-comb the tangles out of your hair. Sam leaned back against the headboard and watched you, his gaze soft and full of wonder.
You felt your cheeks warm. “What?”
He smiled. “Nothing. You’re beautiful, that’s all.”
Your blush deepened. He’d said it a hundred times in the last few hours, but you had the feeling it would never stop making you feel butterflies. Emboldened by his obvious desire for you, you let your hands slip from your hair, tracing your fingers down your cheeks, your neck, down to the hem of the soft t-shirt you’d taken from his bag. You lifted the shirt teasingly, parting your lips just so; you saw his face flush with pleasure and weren’t surprised when he pushed himself off the headboard to grab you by the waist.
You giggled and wrapped your arms around his neck, unable to keep up the seductress routine when he held you so close and looked at you with so much love. He smiled and kissed all over your face, squeezing you tight to him.
“Now what was all that, birdie?” he said. “Trying to lead me down the path of temptation?”
You laughed. “Trying to get you all hot and bothered, Sammy.”
He hummed against the underside of your jaw. “It’s working.”
You tilted your head back to give him better access. “So do something about it, why don’t you?”
He did do something about it, and you spent more long hours in bed together while the storm continued unabated outside. You lay tangled together, talking and laughing, exploring and enjoying the new intimacy between you. Sam read aloud to you, picking up where you’d left off in his Eric Clapton book the night before. You snuggled close to him, tracing your fingers over his collarbone, twirling his soft curls around your fingers.
When you woke a little later, you were surprised to discover you’d even fallen asleep. Sam wasn’t beside you any more, but the bed was warm; you assumed he’d be back shortly and slipped his t-shirt back on before you padded over to the window to look out at the lake. You couldn’t believe it was still raining, the storm continuing just as heavily as it had when it started. Maybe it would storm forever and you and Sam would never have to leave.
You smiled to yourself at the thought. Part of you wanted to stay in the newness of it, the wonder and delight of uninterrupted closeness. The other part of you couldn’t wait to tell the guys that you and Sam were finally together, even though you knew you’d both get teased mercilessly.
You’d just made up your mind to go find your phone and send Josh a cryptic text hinting at your news when a brilliant crack of lightning illuminated the bedroom. A second later, the cabin was plunged into darkness; the storm sounded louder in the dark, and you panicked.
“Sam!” you called. You stood still, too scared to try and take a step from your spot by the window.
“Birdie?” he said. His voice came from downstairs, sounding a little surprised that you were awake. “It’s okay, honey. The power went out. I’m right downstairs.”
“Can you come back up?” you asked.
“I need to find some candles,” he said. “Give me one second.”
You heard him rummage around downstairs for a moment, but the sound of the storm was more overwhelming in the dark. You felt your breath catch.
“Hey Sam?”
“Yes, my love.”
“Can you...” You hoped you weren’t annoying him. “Can you keep talking to me? While you’re downstairs?”
“Of course I can,” he said easily, and you could hear the smile in his voice. “I wouldn’t have left if I’d known the power was going to go out. I went to get my phone.”
You listened as he looked around for his phone and the candles, and he sang your Grateful Dead song as he searched. He pitched his voice to carry up to you and told you to sing back to him; you did, your voice a little wobbly, thankful for the way he took care of you.
“Aha!” he said, cutting into the verse he was singing. “Found the candles, and I think there’s a lighter in my bag. I’m coming up, birdie.”
“Be careful,” you said. “But... hurry.”
His soft laugh was comforting. “I’m hurrying, sweetheart.”
You heard him come up the stairs slowly.
“Where are you?” he asked, his voice closer.
“Over by the window,” you said.
“Reach out your hand.”
You did as he said, and even though you were waiting for it, you still jumped a little at his touch.
“Easy, my love,” he said, and you could hear his smile. “Just me.”
You gave a huge sigh of relief and wrapped your arms around his waist, and he hugged you back just as tightly.
“There we go,” he soothed. “You’re alright.”
“That was horrible.”
He chuckled. “I’m sorry. Let me light the candles for you so you don’t have to be in the dark any more.”
He started to pull away a little bit, and you pressed closer.
“Don’t go,” you said.
“I’m coming right back, honey.”
You didn’t want to let him go, but you stayed where you were as he felt his way over to his bag. Remarkably, he didn’t trip on anything; soon enough, a bright little flame accompanied the flick of his lighter and washed his face in warm light.
“There we go,” he said, lighting the last of the candles and setting it back down with the others on the windowsill. Together, they cast a dim, comforting glow, and Sam easily made his way back over to you.
“Better?” he asked. He gathered you in his arms, and you let him hold you close.
“Much better,” you said truthfully. The storm didn’t seem so frightening any more with the flickering glow and Sam’s arms around you, and you relaxed as you rested your head against his chest.
“Heck of a vacation I put together for you, isn’t it?” he asked.
You smiled. “I don’t know what you’re so worried about. I’m still here, aren’t I?”
“Only because you can’t leave,” he teased.
You tipped your face up for a kiss, and he obliged you. He peppered your cheeks and nose with soft kisses, telling you how much he loved you between each one.
“I don’t know how I’m going to survive out there in the real world,” he said.
You laughed. “What is that supposed to mean?”
He smiled. “You know. When we go back to civilization and I can’t kiss you every second of every day.”
“Ah, I see,” you said. You brushed your fingers through his hair. “That does sound like a problem.”
“I think we should just stay here,” he said. He pressed circles into your hips with his thumbs, and you were so distracted by the feel of it that you lost your train of thought for a moment.
“I like it when you touch me,” you said softly, looking up at him.
He raised a brow. “Do you? That’s surprising.”
You gave him an affectionate eye-roll that made him chuckle as he hugged you close.
“I like it when I touch you, too,” he said. “You’re so soft and warm, birdie.”
“You need a little softness, don’t you?” you asked. He was lanky and sinewy across every inch of him, and you loved the way he felt against you.
He gave your waist a light squeeze. “Yes I do,” he agreed. “Which is why we’re perfect for each other. One of the reasons, anyway.”
“What are the other reasons?”
He smiled. “Let me take you back to bed and I’ll show you.”
While you did end up back in bed, Sam only managed to kiss you for a while until he got so distracted by wanting something to eat that you couldn’t stop laughing. He’d kiss you and try to start something fancy with those long fingers, but then he’d go off on a monologue about pizza or a stack of club sandwiches like he was Shaggy from Scooby Doo. He was making you hungry too, and you gave him one last kiss before you sent him downstairs to make a snack for the two of you.
You followed him downstairs and brought two of the candles with you, setting them on the kitchen counter before you sprawled out on the couch. He hummed as he worked in the kitchen; you couldn’t get comfortable on the couch and dug around in the cushions until you found what was bothering you.
“Hey! Guess what I found!”
“Something exciting, I can tell.”
You turned on his phone’s flashlight. “It is pretty exciting, actually.”
He hummed in agreement. “Bring it over here so I can make your food without being half-blind.”
You did as he asked, sitting at the bar and holding the light so he could work. He took his time crafting a slapdash charcuterie board of practically every food in the kitchen, using everything from pepperoni slices to Starbursts.
“Patience, birdie,” he said, batting your hand away when you tried to snag a bite before it was finished. “Delayed gratification and all that.”
“You’re not going to give the love of your life just one pretzel?” you asked, giving him puppy-dog eyes.
He gave you an exaggerated sigh. “Well, when you put it like that.” He handed you exactly one pretzel. “For you, my love.”
You grinned and took it happily, sipping on the glass of wine he’d put in front of you a few minutes ago. He pushed the plate towards you to let you have more as he tidied up.
“How are we going to tell everybody?” you asked.
He leaned his forearms on the counter. “I dunno. How do you want to tell them?”
“Maybe...” You watched him construct a mini sandwich out of crackers and cheese. “Hey, make me one of those.”
He did. “I thought about just putting it on the group chat and waiting for them to freak out and call us.”
You laughed. “We could do that. You’d probably get roped into a lecture about treating me right, though.”
“Probably,” he agreed with a smile. “But I’m doing pretty good so far, aren’t I?”
You pretended to consider that. “Hm... passable.”
He grinned. “I made you a charcuterie board. I think that’s a little more than passable.”
“Come over here and give me a kiss and maybe it will be.”
You didn’t have to tell him twice. He came to sit by you so he could kiss you and share the snacks, and together you came up with the text you were going to send to the group chat to announce your news.
“Wait, wait — ” You dissolved into giggles as you caught sight of yourself in the camera app. “Sam, this is so stupid.”
He laughed. “Come on, birdie, you just have to — just hold still for one second, and then we — ”
He snapped the picture before you really had time to recover, and the result was a somewhat blurry, flash-illuminated picture of the two of you trying not to laugh with a sour punch straw in your mouths like the spaghetti from Lady and the Tramp.
“Perfect!” he said, biting off his end of the candy and leaving you with the rest. He sent it and set his phone on the counter; within minutes, his phone was blowing up with texts from the guys. Both of you thoroughly enjoyed texting them back with vague and cryptic messages, cracking jokes, laughing until your sides hurt.
“Hey, birdie,” Sam said, breathless with laughter.
You smiled. “Hey what?”
He beamed at you, his whole face lit up with joy and wonder.
“I love you,” he said. “And I hope this is what our whole life is like.”
You felt something as warm and as bright as a sunrise fill your whole chest. You kissed him and felt his beautiful smile.
“Oh, Sammy. I hope so too.”
