Durch die Wälder des Hammer Bakker bei Aalborg

Nördlich von Aalborg liegt der Höhenzug der Hammer Bakker. Der fast unbewohnte Landstrich besteht aus bewaldeten Hängen engen Tälern.  Vorweg gesagt: so eine vielseitige Tour gibt es nur selten! Wälder, Heidegebiete, kleine Waldseen, Hügelgräber, ein Felsmonument, verschlungene Pfade, die auf und ab gehen - was wünscht sich ein Wanderherz mehr?

Die Moränenlandschaft des Hammer Bakker Es soll das schönste Inland-Heidegebiet nördlich des Limfjordes sein. Die Eiszeit hat dieses Gebiet gestaltet und - ganz ehrlich gesagt - sie hat hier eine ganz tolle Arbeit geleistet! Das grosse Moränengebiet erhebt sich hier in der sonst flachen Landschaft. Bei einem Auf und Ab zwischen Hügel und Täler mit bewaldeten oder offenen Gebieten kann man die Natur geniessen. Obwohl das Gebiet als Naherholungsgebiet für die Menschen aus Aalborg gilt, waren wir in diesem Gebiet fast ganz allein unterwegs. Im Hammer Bakker stehen drei markiere Wanderrouten zur Auswahl. Für Mountainbiker gibt es ebenfalls einige Strecken. Neben vielfältigem Natur erleben können wir alte Grabhügel, ehemalige Königsstraßen und andere antike Monumente entdecken. Bis in das 16. Jahrhundert hinein war die Gegend mit Laubwald bewachsen. Die Abholzung des Waldes und die Viehweide zerstörten aber schnell den ursprünglichen Wald. Knapp 300 Jahre später soll der Hammer Bakker praktisch baumfrei gewesen sein. Für eine landwirtschaftliche Nutzung aber war der sandige Boden nicht wirklich geeignet. Im 19. Jahrhundert begann man deswegen mit der Aufforstung. Leider machte man auch hier den Fehler und pflanzte schnellwachsende Nadelholzbäume. Noch heute stehen im Gebiet viele dichte Nadelbaumplantagen. Der dänische Naturfond aber will bis zu 1.000 Hektar Fläche im Hammer Baker zu einem natürlichen Laubwald umbauen. Ebenso sollen Heiden, Wiesen und Weidelandschaften erhalten bleiben. Diese sind zunehmend durch starke Verbuschung gefährdet. Um das Zuwachsen dieser offenen Landschaften zu verhindern, werden im Gebiet neben Schafen und anderen Weidetieren auch eine Gruppe Wildpferde gehalten. Auch unsere Wanderung führte durch mehrere solcher Weidegatter.

Die hügelige Heidelandschaft mit den vielen Wacholderbüschen ist nicht nur zur Heideblüte eine wahre Augenweide. Neben den Heide- und Weidelandschaften mit ihrer jeweils charakteristischen Vegetation sind auch die beiden Torfmoorseen "Pebermosen" und "Brødlandmose" erwähnenswert. Im Gebiet Hammer Bakken gibt es sonst keine weiteren Gewässer wie Bäche oder Seen. Um die Seen hat sich noch die typische Moorvegetation erhalten können. Auch der Sonnentau soll hier noch vorkommen. Unsere Wanderung im Hammer Bakker Startpunkt der Wanderung: Vodskov, Pitsvey - Parkmöglichkeit rechts hinter eine Hecke Vom Parkplatz führt uns unser Weg über einen breiten Weg hinein in das Gebiet des Hammer Bakker. Am Waldrand und über schmale Waldwege entlang passieren wir einige Gebäuden, u.a. ein Internat und eine psychiatrische Klinik. Hier gibt es auch noch einen Gedenkstein, der an frühere Zeiten erinnert, als das Gebäude noch eine Irrenanstalt war. Bei unserer weiteren Tour weichen wir nun etwas vom Wanderweg ab und laufen ein Stück der Mountainbikestrecke entlang. Wer das nicht möchte, kann den Wanderweg einfach folgen. Wir stossen später sowieso wieder auf ihn. Der kurze - wenn auch nicht ungefährliche - Abstecher führ durch einen mannshohen Ginsterwald. Glücklicherweise begegneten wir keinem Biker, so dass wir uns auch nicht mit einem spontanen Abroller zur Seite in Sicherheit bringen mussten.

Wir folgen den Markierungen, gehen durch ein Gatter und erreichen einen hübschen Grill- und Übernachtungsplatz. Nun folgen wir der offiziellen "Roten Route" durch den Hammer Bakker. Der Weg ist mit einem roten Punkt gekennzeichnet. Er führt uns durch die Heide vorbei an Hügelgräbern zu einem wunderschönen Aussichtshügel. Wir entdecken die typischen Heidepflanzen wie das Heidekraut, die Glockenblume, Moosbeere oder die Wacholdersträucher. Durch diverse Gatter laufend überqueren wir die Heideebene, folgen dem roten Punkt und kommen schliesslich in ein Waldgebiet. Unterwegs finden wir immer wieder Schilder, auf denen die Natur vor uns erklärt wird. Sehr schön gemacht! Schliesslich gelangen wir zum See "Pebermosen". Hier verlassen wir die rote Route und wandern weiter auf der blauen Route. Im Gebiet um den See lebt auch eine kleine Herde Wildpferde, die zur Landschaftspflege eingesetzt wird. Natürlich sehen wir die Tiere auch mehrmals zwischen den Bäumen. Durch das Verbeissen von Sträuchern und Bäumen und durch ihre Tritte und ihr Staubbaden halten sie die Flächen frei von Aufwuchs und Verbuschung. Schilder weisen uns darauf hin, dass man zu den Tieren mindestens 10 Meter Abstand halten soll. Bei unserer Tour am See entlang können wir dessen Vegetation betrachten. Wir sehen u.a den Sumpfschachtelhalm und auch die Weisse Seerose. Gerade letztere verträgt überhaupt keine nährstoffreichen Gewässer. Deswegen ist diese Pflanze in Deutschland in den letzten Jahren von einer Allerweltspflanze auf die Rote Liste der bedrohten Arten gerutscht. Wir gelangen zu einem Rastplatz und machen hier am Rand des Sees erst einmal unsere Pause. Nach einiger Zeit hören wir es Knacken und Schnauben. Zögerlich, aber zielstrebig nährt sich uns die Herde, an der Spitze der Leithengst. Immer näher kommen die Tiere. Von den 10 Metern Abstand wollen die Pferde anscheinend nichts wissen. Schliesslich ist die Herde bei uns und wir sind zwischen den Tieren. Wir denken, dass es besser ist, ihnen den Platz zu überlassen. Schliesslich ist es ihr Revier und bei der sommerlichen Wärme haben auch Pferde ihr Recht auf Wasser. Das wir für unsere Entscheidung später fürstlich belohnt werden sollen, wissen wir zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht.

Wir treffen wieder auf die rote Route und wandern diese weiter durch schattige Wälder, bis wir auf eine breite geschotterte Forststraße treffen. Hier wandern wir einen kleinen schmalen Pfad weiter und kommen an einem kleinen, schon ziemlich verlandeten See vorbei. Etwas später zweigt ein Pfad mit einem Hinweis rechts unseres Weges ab. Der Pfad führt uns zum Denkmal Mindesten auf der Kishøj. Dieses Felsmonument wurde zum Gedenken an Harald Branth von dankbaren Schülern und Freunden gestiftet. Branth war ein dänischer Landwirt, Grundbesitzer und Politiker, der sich für die Modernisierung der dänischen Landwirtschaft einsetzte. Vom Gedenkstein gehen wir wieder zurück und weiter die alte Königsstraße entlang. Auf den gamle Kongevej reiste damals der dänische König durch das Land. Unser Weg geht weiter den dänischen Pilgerweg Nordjylland Ost entlang. Im Wald, direkt am Wegesrand erblicken wir zwei grosse Steinpilze. Wie durch ein Wunder sind diese zwei herrlichen Speisepilze schon einige Meter vorher für uns sichtbar. Das sollte unser Danke-schön dafür sein, dass wir der Pferdeherde den Vortritt am See gegeben haben. Dem Universum danke ich dafür! Nur wenn man sich allem mit Respekt begegnet, kann es auf unserer Erde wieder schöner werden. Die Pilze haben wir natürlich mitgenommen und wir machten uns schon unterwegs Gedanken, welches Mahl wir damit zubereiten werden. Im Ferienhaus brachten sie dann 350 und 450 Gramm auf die Waage. Beide hatten festes Fruchtfleisch, waren nirgends angefressen oder hatten Maden im Fleisch. Einfach unvergesslich!

Wir zweigen bei der weiteren Wanderung auf die gelbe Route ab und wandern weiter durch die Wälder. Nach einiger Zeit kommen wir noch an einer Bank mit einer herrlichen Aussicht vorbei und nähern uns schliesslich wieder unserem Ausgangspunkt. Unsere Wanderung bei Komoot zum Nachwandern. NØRRESUNDBY: Fem minilæssere som blev stjålet fra Bøgildsmindevej i Nørresundby natten til søndag, er nu fundet i Hammer Bakker. Minilæsserne stod gemt væk forskellige steder i området og blev fundet én efter én af lokale, samt betjente fra Nordjyllands Politi. Den foreløbige efterforskning tyder på, at der er tale om i alt tre gerningspersoner. De tiltvang sig adgang til virksomhedens i Nørresundby, ved at bryde gennem en port. Maskinerne er nu leveret tilbage til ejeren, som ud over minilæsserne også fik stjålet en hvid Mercedes Vito-varebil med en stor trailer bagpå. Den brugte gerningspersonerne til at transportere de fem minilæssere med. Varebilen blev fundet kort tid efter, ganske nær gerningsstedet. Nordjyllands Politi har tidligere meldt ud at der var stjålet fire minilæssere, men der var retteligt tale om fem. Fire orange og én grå. Den samlede værdi af maskinerne beløber sig til over 2 millioner kroner. ”Vi har en del tekniske spor, som vi er i fuld gang med at sikre. Derudover efterforsker vi bredt. Vi har desværre ingen mistænkte på nuværende tidspunkt, så alle oplysninger fra offentligheden er yderst velkomne. Har man set mistænkelig færden i området omkring Bøgildsmindevej i tiden op til indbruddet, eller kan genkalde sig at have set minilæsserne blive transporteret, så er vi meget interesserede i at vide det. Måske er oplysningerne ikke decideret fyldestgørende, men alle informationer kan bidrage til sagens opklaring", siger Efterforskningsleder politikommissær Ulf Munch Sørensen. Day 94 - to Rebild, Denmark

It was an early start for the ferry this morning. On such days the van is a big advantage, as it can be just a few seconds from being in bed to driving - breakfast, most important for the dog, can be done once checked in.

We were in the line at the terminal, which is right in the middle of Gothenburg, by 7 am.

It was a three and a half hour crossing during which Roja was quite happy dozing in the van. As we travel south the weather gets steadily warmer, from -10 at Hemsedal last weekend, to 12C in Gothenburg, and 16C off the ferry in Denmark at Fredericksburg, and 18C further inland.

I located a forested public area, not quite a Nature Park, called Hammer Bakker where we took a leisurely lunch and then a couple of hours out.

Later in the afternoon we drove through, or rather around, Aalborg, and then south to Rebild, which is a big tourist outdoor area in the summer, but tonight, I arrived just before dark at 6 pm, there was just some determined MTBers and runners, in clubs, trying to squeeze the last bit of light out of the season.

Caleb has to pause in his path to really take a look and make sure that through the absurdity of a town thriving in the apocalypse that he's not imagining things. He has to swallow down the feeling that he's playing tricks on himself as he recognizes that mop of messy brown hair, those broad shoulders, and a set of familiar steely eyes. He blinks, sees a man much younger in his place for a moment as the recognition hits him like a truck, and when Caleb shakes his head, he realizes that it is Victor Bakker occupying that gazebo this early morning.

"Holy shit," he breathes lowly, and he's not sure why but he feels his heart hammer in his chest. Perhaps for fear, this is a hallucination, and he's about to worry and confuse some poor stranger.

Den første halvanden uges tid er gået og vi elsker vores praktiksted! Vi bliver udfordret både fagligt, personligt og ikke mindst vores smagsløg.  Vi har lavet et lille sammenklip af nogle af de billeder vi har taget.  Island er fyldt men bakker og bjerge, derfor køre mange også rund i meget store biler med meget store dæk. I den tid vi har været her, har temperaturen ligget imellem 4+ til -3 grader. Der har været slud, og bjergene i horisonten er blevet hvide.  Vores praktiksted er et enormt hyggeligt og hjemligt sted, med beboerne i højsæde. Alle er altid søde og rare, beboerne og deres pårørende lader til at være meget glade for stedet. DET ER VI OGSÅ!  De fleste beboer får bad en gang om ugen, men i modsætning til Danmark, er det i karbad eller i det de på stedet kalder den blå lagune, som er et bruseleje, i grå.....  På afdelingerne hænger der et aktivitetskema, hvor fx. fysioterapeuten kommer og laver noget, men det er altid andre end plejepersonalet.  På Cathrines afdeling har der været fødselsdag, med en stor kage til hver halvdel af afdelingen, og på Lauras afdeling kommer der en frivillig hver torsdag, hun synger og spiller musik, og i går havde hun også sherry og chokolade med.  Vi har fået æren af en af Islands gamle specialiteter, nemlig lammehoved, med alt det der nu er på sådan et, med undtagelse af hjernen. - Det var meget grænseoverskridende, men smagte overraskende godt.  Deres medicinadministration er lidt anderledes end vores, det foregår på små vogne, med papir, hammer og æblemos. Det er 1 personale pr. afdeling der tager sig af al medicin-givningen, og den samme der dokumentere det. Det er den eneste funktion den personale har på dagen.  De bruger ikke loftlifte som vi bruger i Danmark, men derimod stålifte af forskellig art, alt efter afdelingen. Cathrine er blandt andet på et lukket demensafsnit, hvilket er grunden til at de har malet på ydredøren, således beboerne ikke går fra stedet.  Så det har været en meget begivenhedsrig tid og vi glæder os til endnu flere oplevelser :D  Laura & Cathrine 1711, Reykjavik, Island

Durch die Wälder des Hammer Bakker

Nördlich von Aalborg liegt der Höhenzug der Hammer Bakker. Der fast unbewohnte Landstrich besteht aus bewaldeten Hängen engen Tälern.  Vorweg gesagt: so eine vielseitige Tour gibt es nur selten! Wälder, Heidegebiete, kleine Waldseen, Hügelgräber, ein Felsmonument, verschlungene Pfade, die auf und ab gehen - was wünscht sich ein Wandererherz mehr?

Die Moränenlandschaft des Hammer Bakker Es soll das schönste Inland-Heidegebiet nördlich des Limfjordes sein. Die Eiszeit hat dieses Gebiet gestaltet und - ganz ehrlich gesagt - sie hat hier eine ganz tolle Arbeit geleistet! Das grosse Moränengebiet erhebt sich hier in der sonst flachen Landschaft. Bei einem Auf und Ab zwischen Hügel und Täler mit bewaldeten oder offenen Gebieten kann man die Natur geniessen. Obwohl das Gebiet als Naherholungsgebiet für die Menschen aus Aalborg gilt, waren wir in diesem Gebiet fast ganz allein unterwegs. Im Hammer Bakker stehen drei markiere Wanderrouten zur Auswahl. Für Mountainbiker gibt es ebenfalls einige Strecken. Neben vielfältigem Natur erleben können wir alte Grabhügel, ehemalige Königsstraßen und andere antike Monumente entdecken. Bis in das 16. Jahrhundert hinein war die Gegend mit Laubwald bewachsen. Die Abholzung des Waldes und die Viehweide zerstörten aber schnell den ursprünglichen Wald. Knapp 300 Jahre später soll der Hammer Bakker praktisch baumfrei gewesen sein. Für eine landwirtschaftliche Nutzung aber war der sandige Boden nicht wirklich geeignet. Im 19. Jahrhundert begann man deswegen mit der Aufforstung. Leider machte man auch hier den Fehler und pflanzte schnellwachsende Nadelholzbäume. Noch heute stehen im Gebiet viele dichte Nadelbaumplantagen. Der dänische Naturfond aber will bis zu 1.000 Hektar Fläche im Hammer Baker zu einem natürlichen Laubwald umbauen. Ebenso sollen Heiden, Wiesen und Weidelandschaften erhalten bleiben. Diese sind zunehmend durch starke Verbuschung gefährdet. Um das Zuwachsen dieser offenen Landschaften zu verhindern, werden im Gebiet neben Schafen und anderen Weidetieren auch eine Gruppe Wildpferde gehalten. Auch unsere Wanderung führte durch mehrere solcher Weidegatter.

Die hügelige Heidelandschaft mit den vielen Wacholderbüschen ist nicht nur zur Heideblüte eine wahre Augenweide. Neben den Heide- und Weidelandschaften mit ihrer jeweils charakteristischen Vegetation sind auch die beiden Torfmoorseen "Pebermosen" und "Brødlandmose" erwähnenswert. Im Gebiet Hammer Bakken gibt es sonst keine weiteren Gewässer wie Bäche oder Seen. Um die Seen hat sich noch die typische Moorvegetation erhalten können. Auch der Sonnentau soll hier noch vorkommen. Unsere Wanderung im Hammer Bakker Startpunkt der Wanderung: Vodskov, Pitsvey - Parkmöglichkeit rechts hinter eine Hecke Vom Parkplatz führt uns unser Weg über einen breiten Weg hinein in das Gebiet des Hammer Bakker. Am Waldrand und über schmale Waldwege entlang passieren wir einige Gebäuden, u.a. ein Internat und eine psychiatrische Klinik. Hier gibt es auch noch einen Gedenkstein, der an frühere Zeiten erinnert, als das Gebäude noch eine Irrenanstalt war. Bei unserer weiteren Tour weichen wir nun etwas vom Wanderweg ab und laufen ein Stück der Mountainbikestrecke entlang. Wer das nicht möchte, kann den Wanderweg einfach folgen. Wir stossen später sowieso wieder auf ihn. Der kurze - wenn auch nicht ungefährliche - Abstecher führ durch einen mannshohen Ginsterwald. Glücklicherweise begegneten wir keinem Biker, so dass wir uns auch nicht mit einem spontanen Abroller zur Seite in Sicherheit bringen mussten.

Wir folgen den Markierungen, gehen durch ein Gatter und erreichen einen hübschen Grill- und Übernachtungsplatz. Nun folgen wir der offiziellen "Roten Route" durch den Hammer Bakker. Der Weg ist mit einem roten Punkt gekennzeichnet. Er führt uns durch die Heide vorbei an Hügelgräbern zu einem wunderschönen Aussichtshügel. Wir entdecken die typischen Heidepflanzen wie das Heidekraut, die Glockenblume, Moosbeere oder die Wacholdersträucher. Durch diverse Gatter laufend überqueren wir die Heideebene, folgen dem roten Punkt und kommen schliesslich in ein Waldgebiet. Unterwegs finden wir immer wieder Schilder, auf denen die Natur vor uns erklärt wird. Sehr schön gemacht! Schliesslich gelangen wir zum See "Pebermosen". Hier verlassen wir die rote Route und wandern weiter auf der blauen Route. Im Gebiet um den See lebt auch eine kleine Herde Wildpferde, die zur Landschaftspflege eingesetzt wird. Natürlich sehen wir die Tiere auch mehrmals zwischen den Bäumen. Durch das Verbeissen von Sträuchern und Bäumen und durch ihre Tritte und ihr Staubbaden halten sie die Flächen frei von Aufwuchs und Verbuschung. Schilder weisen uns darauf hin, dass man zu den Tieren mindestens 10 Meter Abstand halten soll. Bei unserer Tour am See entlang können wir dessen Vegetation betrachten. Wir sehen u.a den Sumpfschachtelhalm und auch die Weisse Seerose. Gerade letztere verträgt überhaupt keine nährstoffreichen Gewässer. Deswegen ist diese Pflanze in Deutschland in den letzten Jahren von einer Allerweltspflanze auf die Rote Liste der bedrohten Arten gerutscht. Wir gelangen zu einem Rastplatz und machen hier am Rand des Sees erst einmal unsere Pause. Nach einiger Zeit hören wir es Knacken und Schnauben. Zögerlich, aber zielstrebig nährt sich uns die Herde, an der Spitze der Leithengst. Immer näher kommen die Tiere. Von den 10 Metern Abstand wollen die Pferde anscheinend nichts wissen. Schliesslich ist die Herde bei uns und wir sind zwischen den Tieren. Wir denken, dass es besser ist, ihnen den Platz zu überlassen. Schliesslich ist es ihr Revier und bei der sommerlichen Wärme haben auch Pferde ihr Recht auf Wasser. Das wir für unsere Entscheidung später fürstlich belohnt werden sollen, wissen wir zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht.

Wir treffen wieder auf die rote Route und wandern diese weiter durch schattige Wälder, bis wir auf eine breite geschotterte Forststraße treffen. Hier wandern wir einen kleinen schmalen Pfad weiter und kommen an einem kleinen, schon ziemlich verlandeten See vorbei. Etwas später zweigt ein Pfad mit einem Hinweis rechts unseres Weges ab. Der Pfad führt uns zum Denkmal Mindesten auf der Kishøj. Dieses Felsmonument wurde zum Gedenken an Harald Branth von dankbaren Schülern und Freunden gestiftet. Branth war ein dänischer Landwirt, Grundbesitzer und Politiker, der sich für die Modernisierung der dänischen Landwirtschaft einsetzte. Vom Gedenkstein gehen wir wieder zurück und weiter die alte Königsstraße entlang. Auf den gamle Kongevej reiste damals der dänische König durch das Land. Unser Weg geht weiter den dänischen Pilgerweg Nordjylland Ost entlang. Im Wald, direkt am Wegesrand erblicken wir zwei grosse Steinpilze. Wie durch ein Wunder sind diese zwei herrlichen Speisepilze schon einige Meter vorher für uns sichtbar. Das sollte unser Danke-schön dafür sein, dass wir der Pferdeherde den Vortritt am See gegeben haben. Dem Universum danke ich dafür! Nur wenn man sich allem mit Respekt begegnet, kann es auf unserer Erde wieder schöner werden. Die Pilze haben wir natürlich mitgenommen und wir machten uns schon unterwegs Gedanken, welches Mahl wir damit zubereiten werden. Im Ferienhaus brachten sie dann 350 und 450 Gramm auf die Waage. Beide hatten festes Fruchtfleisch, waren nirgends angefressen oder hatten Maden im Fleisch. Einfach unvergesslich!

Wir zweigen bei der weiteren Wanderung auf die gelbe Route ab und wandern weiter durch die Wälder. Nach einiger Zeit kommen wir noch an einer Bank mit einer herrlichen Aussicht vorbei und nähern uns schliesslich wieder unserem Ausgangspunkt. Unsere Wanderung bei Komoot zum Nachwandern. Those songs were about American evangelical Christians, specifically fundamentalists – Christians who value a private, personal relationship with Jesus and a “literal” reading of the Bible. Evangelicals are not the mainline Christian denominations, like Lutherans or Methodists, that sailed across the Atlantic from Europe. In my town, we Lutherans grimly called evangelical congregations “happy churches,” because they spoke in tongues and made excellent eye contact when you visited them, like Amway dealers.

I didn’t know it at the time, but my sect of Lutheranism, which bore the unwieldy name “The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod,” was the fundamentalist outlier of the mainline groups. We also professed to read the Bible literally. Or mostly literally. Women couldn’t preach, evolution was bunk, homosexual acts were sinful, the Pope was the Antichrist… and other dogmas that are still on the books! Of course, no Christian takes everything in the Bible literally – fundamentalists just refuse to own up to it.

Sometimes evangelical fundamentalists showed up in our church and stayed years before realizing they were in the wrong place. One man with excellent eye contact, David, taught Sunday school and made an unforgettable inflatable Jonah fish – or “whale,” if you’re a blasphemer bent on overthrowing the divinely breathed Word of God – that we kids could crawl inside. I’ve since replicated this craft for my own Sunday school class. The roll of black plastic was a little pricey. David finally left our church because, taking Revelation 20 at its word, he learned Christ would reign for a thousand years at the end of the age. Taking Revelation 20 at its word, my Dad and the Lutheran church disagreed.

The sensible mainline way out of this impasse would be to throw up your hands and say, who fucking cares, John the Revelator was obviously under the influence of either an unfathomable divine presence or some A+ Patmosian mushrooms when he wrote his book, and we should be thankful he even managed to set pen to papyrus so we could one day enjoy the radness of Aphrodite’s Child’s concept album 666. But if you’re invested in the inerrancy of the divinely breathed Word of God – an investment that determines which eternity your kids will enter when they die – any slip-up suggests a deeper problem. Dad’s default Bible-reading lens was “literal,” but he was allowed to change lenses if the text seemed obviously metaphorical, and if it was contradicted in straightforward fashion by other Biblical passages. (The Gospel writers? More literal-seeming than Revelation, and decidedly not millennialists.) From David’s point of view, if the Lutherans could explain away the plain meaning of Revelation 20, what else would we try to talk our way around?

Before King’s X, dUg had grown up in a strict Baptist home, and Jerry and Ty were alums of Evangel College, a Pentecostal school in Springfield. (Pentecostal = evangelical but with even more Holy Spirit. My friend’s Pentecostal pastor once gave me a very friendly, Amway-ish overview.) They knew to be wary of false doctrine.

Trouble was, turn-of-the-decade televangelists like Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart had been giving evangelical Christians a bad name. That’s why musicians of all genres, even Christian bands like White Heart, were endorsing preacher skepticism. Most Christians, at least the literate ones, recognized televangelists as “religious vipers” wearing, in White Heart’s words, “expensive sheepskin.” There was no backlash or downside to recording false preacher songs. Breakaway’s fatherly columnist might have claimed offense at “Personal Jesus,” but he heartily recommended “Jesus He Knows Me.”

We Lutherans didn’t have preacher scandals, unless you count the more-frequent-than-you’d-like instances of smalltown Missouri pastors publishing Holocaust denial manifestos. So it wasn’t the skepticism of “Mission” that first resonated with me – I was just happy to finally understand what dUg was singing about. The first side of Gretchen was like hearing the ‘shroom-fueled ravings of John. The language was often cryptic, and four of the six songs depicted overwhelming divine revelations, which simply were not in the Lutheran playbook. Opening side two, “Mission” felt ripped from the headlines, plus its sledge-hammer drop-D riff was almost a parody of metal, ideal for a kid still titillated by the possibility that AC/DC worshiped Satan. AC/DC = “After Christ/Devil Comes,” remember?

Only wait: isn’t “After Christ/Devil Comes” just Revelation 20 in a nutshell?

When the hammer fell it wasn’t just a closet full of shoes the investigators found. It was millions in collectible cars, jewels, furs, homes, planes, luxury air-conditioned houses for their pets, and high-end mascara for Tammy’s eyes.

These people became legendary for their excesses but compared the former prime minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, they were mere pikers. Razak was indicted yesterday and a list of his, and his wife’s, stolen goods was released. The literally stole billions from the people and spent in on more luxury goods than anyone could possibly consume in a hundred lifetimes.

The listed included:

$29 million in cash in 26 different currencies. It took three days, twenty-two people, and six counting machines to total it all up.

Over 550 women’s handbags, some worth more than $100,000 each.

423 high-end watches.

234 pairs of sunglasses worth over $90 thousand.

12,000 pieces of jewelry worth $109 million.

2,800 pair of ear rings, 1,600 brooches, 2,200 finger rings and 1,400 necklaces.

14 diamond and bejeweled tiaras.

1,400 men’s neckties.

I don’t know where Razak ranks among criminal politicians but all totaled  he stole at least $4.5 billion during his time in office.  If this kind of thing catches your fancy, spend a little time digging into the former leader of the Ukraine. He may make Razak look like just another piker!
