I saw your tags and I’m now very intrigued like what do you mean yuhan has the SHORTEST TRAGIC BACKSTORY?!?! JUST WHAT IS GOING ON?? like granted I should have known a game about devil cat butlers would have some angst and tragic backstories but god damn 😭😭

there was a miscalculation on my part and yuuhan's is in fact, not the one with the shortest backstory! however that's only because the others have yet to have their backstories be revealed. sorry for the late answer btw, exams have made me pretty tired.

ok so ill briefly explain a bit. this ties in to the requirement to become a devil butler that is, having felt so much despair that one feels like dying. normal people will be swallowed up by the devils they contract with. the despair essentially acts like chains for the devil. so to talk about their pasts in the Briefest Way Possible (lie):

miyaji has beef with lucas on the surface but really it's because he still can't get over the fact that lucas decided to save him from the verge of death instead of someone else he thought was more capable than him while lucas simply chose to save miyaji because he had higher chances of living.

lucas was basically a child prodigy/genius. since young, he's always loved reading books, and even read thick books that even adults struggled to understand. even though he was lonely and had no one to talk to, he still endured it, skipped grades, and became a doctor at the age of 10+. at first he was looked down on for being young, but an older doctor stood up for him. eventually he became the leader of the doctors, but due to his lack of social skills, he struggled to communicate well, which resulted in the doctors hating him. in the end, all the doctors except lucas quit their job. and the group collapsed. (tbf id quit too... imagine being said you didn't work as hard as him and don't have as much brainpower compared to him as well)

ammon has only had his mom since birth and lived with her, selling flowers for a living. ammon would always make sure the flowers would be sold out at the end of the day for his sickly mother, but if he doesn't manage to sell all of them it's heavily implied his mom whips him like he does to himself even now. they were like super poor but ammon still loved his mom because he only had her

berrien has like this super mysterious past but rn it's starting to unravel in chapter 4. he's an orphan and got adopted into a church backed by the grovanas or whatever nobel family to nurture warriors who could fight angels, but surprisingly the church is actually full of love and was ran by someone who fighted angels named Goetia. berrien also met his soon-to-be older brother figure named Beren/Belen. btw all of the kids go by the last name Cliane because goetia wants everyone to become true family.

when berrien was 26 (Beren 29), goetia died from a chronic disease and Beren had to take on goetia's responsibilities. berrien became the one running the church, however shit happened, Beren got demonized, and berrien used his powers to keep Beren alive after forming a contract with his current devil. he's still residing in berrien's basement as of current, but in a coma. berrien still thinks he himself has no rights to be a butler and really does not believe that he's the one keeping the damn thing running

also the church got destroyed like 2400 years ago and yes berrien is 2000+ years old

haures was born into some wack ass family, his dad ran away with some other woman and his mom projected her rage and stuff like that onto haures, and his newborn younger sister Tricia. haures is 10 years older than Tricia. when he was that age, he ran away from home with Tricia (literal baby) because he no longer trusted his mom to take good care of them. after that, when haures was 18, he trained hard to become a soldier under the grovanas nobles so he could afford to let Tricia get treatment for her worsening vision. one heartbreaking scene was when haures showed off his red uniform to Tricia and she said the blue uniform looked good on him... but 5 years later, haures managed to get Tricia's eyes healed!!! surely nothing bad could happen!!!!

sike. haures caught one of the grovanas nobles illegally trafficking humans with some dealer, and arrested him. however that led to the seller getting revenge, and he decided to capture tricia. he stabbed her and threw her into the woods. when haures found her, she only managed to call out to haures before she died after a few breaths. haures was really really really devastated. he sought revenge on the noble, and while the noble didn't die, he was jailed 5 years for harming the noble (not death sentence because he was determined mentally unstable after losing Tricia.). after he got out of jail, he found the noble again and wanted to kill him, but he was reminded of how Tricia admired him for protecting the people and helping those in need, which stopped him. after that, he became a devil butler because of his proficient fighting skills.

lamli was forced to work at a circus by his mom at the age of 10, while starting up with simple duties, he decided to train to become a circus troupe performer so he'd earn more money for his complaining mother. its heavily implied he's abandoned by her and becomes a devil butler because of his nimble body. btw his mom said she never wanted to have lamli right in front of him. jesus.

fennesz was born into a wealthy happy family, and had an older sister. however his war general father lost a war against nobles, and the economy went into shambles. his mom remarried but even though their stepdad was nice, fennesz and his sister ended up strays on the street due to some reasons i forgot of. fennesz would get bullied by kids on the street because of his father's loss in the war, but his sister would always protect him, and they relied on each other for survival. she's very smart, as shown in the story. she also loves history, as she said, it can help people learn from the past. its heavily implied she is dead.

ok flure! flure grew up with his older sister and mother who both did ballet (can one of you have an actual dad for once?), and he also followed in their footsteps. however when he was a child he was bullied for liking stereotypical girly things, like playing with his sister's dolls, doing ballet and having long hair. even though he was laughed at for doing it, he still underwent strict training guided bg his sister and mother. he never found the courage to tell his sister or mom even though his sister could tell something was wrong (heard him crying at night). he still thinks he should be more courageous to this day and thinks he's pathetic. we don't know what happened to his family but they probably died.

i wanted to talk about boschi but i realized idk much about him apart from the fact that he only had his grandmother (who's actually a great caretaker for once!) and he was bullied for being a bookworm/nerd at school and had no friends. though he did actually beat those bullies up later for mocking his grandma when she wanted to take him back home. she didn't want boschi to fight but she said herself she was actually rooting for him when he was fighting LMAOOO love her for that

lono. ok so lono was really poor and had no parents, and he acted as the older brother for the younger kids living on the streets with him. he'd work as someone who'd clean up rubble from battling angels, which was a job that had unstable income since no one knows when angels are gonna appear. they were family basically. lono would rather starve than let his siblings eat less, and his love of cooking originated here because he loved seeing them happy from his cooking. we don't know what happened to them, but they're probably dead

nac was born into a rich family, and has a father, not sure if he has a mother, never mentioned at least. apparently the stein family was great at sales or trading or smth??? they're just some very rich and well-known name. however on his 12th birthday, his butler led him to the forest near the stein mansion, and revealed himself to be someone the stein family harmed. just as he was about to kill lil nac in shock, nac retaliated in defense. and when he realized, he already stabbed the man at his vital point. his dad appears out of nowhere and reveals that he knew this all along, and that the stein family is actually a long line of assassins with sales as their front personas. nac was trained to kill since then, and thought he'd never feel positive emotions again before he became a devil butler. he also has scars all around his body, probably from the assassin work he did.

lato and his non-blood related brother, Aleks I think? were kidnapped by people who wanted to train people to become angel fighters. however unlike berrien, this time it's just pure cruelness and literal torture. they were 8 when this experiment started. not only that, all the children were sold by their caretakers to this place, including lato and aleks' "mother", the head of their orphanage, who they deeply loved and believed in. when lato finally found a way to escape, almost half the children were dead.

and when he told the others, they told lato that they already gave up on escaping, including aleks. from, i suppose, all the suppressed anger and trauma, he burned the experiment facility down, leaving the other kids to die because he hallucinated that they wanted them to be burned so they could be free. after that, lato returned to the orphanage even though he knew the "mother" sold him in the first place. guess what the mother did! that's right she ran back into the orphanage when she saw him, locked the fucking door and told him to get the fuck away from her. and lato burned the orphanage down.

now onto the new butler trio!

teddy is the one with the most details in his backstory so far. when he was young, he Had a twin brother, and teddy was a far cry from who he is now. he was negative and gloomy compared to his brother, who was positive and talented, and people always favored teddy's brother more. but one day, his brother died protecting him from an angel, but since they were so alike people didn't know whether the one that died was teddy or his brother. and after grieving his brother, teddy decided to become him, and used his brother's name to live on as him so people wouldn't be sad, because "teddy" was the one that died. and that led to teddy forming his personality today. teddy is his actual name though, he started using it after he became a knight. he became a knight because he wanted to protect people from angels.

but during an attack by an intelligent angel, namely seraphim, one of the angels that appeared at the end of chapter 1 and also the major antagonist of the story, teddy's entire unit got killed. at the start of chapter 2.5, he recuperated in a hospital, however he kept terrible nightmares (reliving the massacre, and hearing the voices of his comrades asking him why he abandoned them and why he got to survive) and so didn't sleep at all. he eventually snuck out of the hospital to visit their graves, and then started wondering what the point of him still being alive is. he almost threw himself off a cliff before haures and aruji reached him.

hanamaru. ten years before the story, hanamaru was fleeing from something- he walked all the way from the east to the central, and collapsed in a forest. a nun found him and took him back to a church that doubled as an orphanage. however the nun soon fell ill and died, so hanamaru began taking care of the kids in the church after he was saved by her.

but 5 years later, the church was attacked by angels. he was away from the church when the attack happened, and when he came back, all he saw were angels flying away from the ruined church. only 4 kids survived. hanamaru had a breakdown, and kept kneeling and pressing his head against the ground, saying things like "i couldn't protect them", "i swear ill keep them safe next time", implying this is not the first time something like this has happened. he swore vengeance against the angels that day, that he would never forgive them, and himself. so berrien suspects that the 4 kids that survived were the people that kept hanamaru around. who knows what could've happened if they passed as well...

lastly (finally), yuuhan. at the age of 9, he trained to become a soldier of the sardeis family so he could protect his hometown, and made it after 3 years. he quickly rose up in the ranks, being a prodigy. in the main story, he started doubting his loyalty to the family after they attempted an assassination on the devil butlers. and he betrayed the sardeis family and fell into their trap when investigating forbidden records. he got thrown into jail by the head, and the head decided for his punishment, yuuhan's whole village and everyone he knew there will be burned and killed. he could only despair in jail. in the story, after his prison guard left after serving him food, yuuhan started crying. he called out to his father, his mother, everyone from his hometown, apologizing again and again, believing that it's his fault that they died.

after that, the head, fubuki, paid him a visit. fubuki beat yuuhan up, pushed him to the verge of death, but not grave enough injuries to die. yuuhan asked fubuki to kill him, but fubuki refused. he even says he'll force feed yuuhan till the day of his death execution if necessary. however, yuuhan was rescued by the butlers during his execution. (it took place in a forest with tigers. basically the death penalty is getting eaten by tigers) he became a devil butler after that.

I love this skit so much because... well, Berrien is cute, but Hanamaru??? Isn't Berrien is supposed to be like, what, more than 300 years older than you??? What an exemplary way to treat your elder 😂

Then again, akuneko age's hierarchy works differently than in real world (or in any other games). The years a butler's spent after his contract starts don't seem to count as... as a way to measure seniority (?). Which is why Hanamaru will always be the oldest and Flure the youngest. Huh. I'm personally still not used to that.

But it has been already confirmed that such is indeed the case, specifically in the end part of episode 2.5, where an intriguing conversation between Lono and Teddy happened. (Have I ever talked about this?). It goes more or less like this: Teddy asked Lono why he attached a suffix onto his name (implied question: why are you being polite to me?). Shouldn't it be the other way given that Lono is *supposed to be* older and more experienced job-wise than Teddy? Lono's reply: "Because it's the existing rule in the Devil's Palace. Whether or not you're superior is determined by the age you become a devil butler. Since Teddy-san is 25 and I'm 22, you are my senior!" He then adds that Teddy is welcome to use an informal language with him (before, Teddy talks politely to Lono, or everyone else for that matter).

Hmm... Does that rule have significance that's been mentioned or am I forgetting something? Going back to Hanamaru, him being the oldest when he became a devil butler means he's indeed Berrien's senior in the Devil's Palace. In the Masquerade Jewel event, there's also a scene where Haures technically the third oldest in the palace consult Hanamaru in a way a younger one does to the older.

Somehow, I still can't wrap my head around it. Not in a bad way, I mean. It's just so fascinating to think about.

In the midst of the rainy season, you and Hanamaru find a bit of refuge from the downpour in each other's arms.

It's just short fluff for the mansions #1 ダンディ! 1,145 words. No smut.

I wrote this with a feminine reader in mind, but it is gender-neutral. POV 2nd person, present tense

After your long, warm bath, you collapse in bed and stare at the dreary gray on the other side of the windows. The rainy season has come to the mansion and has had various effects on the inhabitants. Though stuck indoors, you enjoy the soft pitapat of raindrops on the glass panes and the flickering candlelight's cozy mood. You bunch a pillow under your chin and watch streaks of water trail down the window until your door creaks open behind you. You glance at your visitor, discovering Hanamaru holding two steaming teacups as he lets himself in.

"My Lord, I have some tea."

He pushes the door shut with his heel, then brings the cups to your bed with a shrewd look. Though he only brings you tea, he makes the act seem inappropriately decadent. You sit up with a smile, take a cup from him, and warm your hands on the ceramic. Without asking for permission, he sits on your bed and yawns.

"The rain has a way of making tasks difficult, doesn't it?" he asks.

"You're saying the rain makes you even lazier?" you ask.

"Perhaps, but I think the Lord might like to lie around as much as I do," he says.

You sip your tea. "It's true I've been feeling a little down lately."

"I wasn't judging you. I was merely observing that our interests . . . align."

"I haven't forgotten about what you said, you know."

He lifts his brow. "Oh, really?"

"About being the one to warm my bed. I can't believe you just said that out loud. In front of everyone."

He laughs in a way that conveys he has no regret over how he acted. It never truly bothered you; besides, he only articulated the desires of every man in the house. Crudely, but honestly. Perhaps that's why no one yelled at him.

"My Lord never objected," he says.

"Hanamaru."

"Days like today are meant for climbing under the covers and relaxing, don't you think?"

"And you'd be the perfect company for it?" you ask.

"Your words, Lord, not mine."

You tut your tongue and set your teacup on the nightstand. It's unclear why he developed such an instant affinity for you. He claimed to have a rude personality, but upon meeting, you felt no distance from him—a distinct difference from almost every other man in the mansion, most of whom took their time warming up to you. Perhaps the reason was that for the past several years, his only company had been children.

You crawl beneath your duvet and flip it over you until you disappear. After several moments, you feel his weight shift on your bed as he inches closer to its head. When he's at your side, you draw the bedding back and give him a grin devious enough to make him pause.

"What are you doing, Hanamaru?" you ask.

"Checking on my Lord," he says.

"Just doing your duties, then."

"Absolutely." He slips his hand under the duvet, and when you don't stop him, most of him follows, forcing you to the center of the bed. "Should I get comfortable?"

"Only if you want to stay," you say.

"How long will you be in bed?"

"If you're wondering whether you ought to get your sake—"

"I am."

"Then hurry and fetch it."

Pleased by your response, he stands and backs out of the room with a lopsided smirk. You occupy yourself with a book from the library while you wait for him to return, and when he does, he's barefoot and missing his tailcoat. His hair is wet, and he's holding a large bottle and two small cups, all proof of his run between the house and the villa.

"Where did your things go?" you ask with a laugh.

"I left them at the front door—they'd yell at me if I tracked water all through the mansion," he says.

He sets the sake down next to you, then turns away and shakes the water from his unruly hair. You're already pouring two cups when he lands heavily on your bed, causing you to splatter several drops.

"O~to, careful with that." He takes the bottle and finishes pouring for you.

"Maru, are you allergic to buttoning your shirt up the entire way?" you ask.

"It's a lot of work, isn't it?" He hands you a cup.

"No, it's not."

You savor the flavor of the sake. It's much nicer than you expected, with a crisp taste of apples. It was meant to be enjoyed, not hammered at until drunk. You weren't sure what he'd bring, but it defied your expectations.

"Maybe I should take it off so I don't get your sheets wet." He works the bottom buttons free and lets the front of his shirt fall open to reveal the rest of his well-defined chest.

You finish your drink and reach out to set the cup next to the bottle, letting your arm brush against his bare abdomen. After peeling his shirt from his body, he drops it to the floor, then slides under the covers again. He brings a comfortable warmth with him. When you cozy up to his side, he curls his arm under your waist and tugs you into his side.

"Maru . . . "

He hums in response.

"You may be unsophisticated—your words, not mine—but you're a good man."

"Oh? What did I do to deserve such praise from the Lord?" he asks.

You huff and poke him square in the chest. "Just accept my compliment."

"Ah, cute." He snags your finger in his hand and squeezes it beneath the duvet. "Which is exactly why I want to protect you."

You try tugging your hand away as your ears burn, but it's useless. Instead, you push as much of your face into your pillow as possible, refusing to look at him. He chuckles as he moves his grasp to your wrist and shakes your arm.

"Come on, now. Show me your face. When you do that, I can't see the Lord's shy face very well, now can I?"

"I'm not being shy," you mumble into your pillow.

"Then what is it?"

"I'm being annoyed."

"In that case, I like it even more."

He takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, and lets his weight sink into your bed as he rests your hand on his chest. You lift your head and watch him for several seconds, studying his facial features. Breathing a soft sigh through your nose, you rest your chin on his shoulder, then let your eyes flutter shut. Before long, the soothing sound of the rain lulls you into a peaceful state. His heart taps a slow, gentle rhythm beneath your palm that blends with the patter of the droplets on the window.

"I wish this could last forever," he whispers.

Though you say nothing, you agree.

some more summarizing. i was actually taking notes as i went this time so this one is a lot longer than the first part.

we get our official introduction to hanamaru, voiced by eguchi takuya

Forgot that Teddy doesn't know that the master is from another world. Master comments that Hanamaru's full name (Kawakami Hanamaru) sounds like a Japanese person's name. Teddy went like "Japanese? What's that?" and the Master is like "Uh… Over here you'd call it the Eastern Country, I guess?" and Teddy was like, "What do you mean, 'over here'???"

Hanamaru actually refused to become a butler before. He said that he wanted to wait for 5 years first. He used to visit the mansion a lot 5 years ago but hasn't been by in a few years. All of the other butlers are acquainted with him.

He gets along well with Lamli too, who usually doesn't take to other people very quickly.

According to Boschi himself, Hanamaru is even less disciplined than he is haha. Haures says that he'll be taking naps all the time, has a massive sweet tooth and he steals sweets from the kitchen… (Muu went like, "Oh Boschi, that's you!" lmao). Personality-wise, he's described as lazy and bluntly honest and probably wouldn't use honorifics while speaking to the Master.

He fights with a sword, but isn't formally trained to be a soldier like Teddy. But he is very skilled. He apparently fought an angel one on one and lived (remember he isn't a butler and doesn't have their powers). Haures describes him as having a once-in-a-generation talent, and Teddy is immediately like "I want to fight him" lol

Hanamaru lives in an old church in the middle of the forest. Including Hanamaru, there are 5 people living at the church- the other four are orphans that Hanamaru is taking care of, as the church doubles as an orphanage. There was a nun who took care of the children, but around the time Hanamaru arrived at the church, she fell ill and died. So Hanamaru began looking after the kids in her place. That was about 10 years ago.

The kids are 2 girls and 2 boys, they look around 15 years old now. The kids also know all the butlers, who had visited in the past. One of the boys asks about Lono and is disappointed when Berrien tells him that Lono has to work at the mansion today; he missed eating Lono's cake. But Berrien has brought along sweets that Lono has made, and also brought some tea along.

Probably safe the assume that Hanamaru refused to become a butler five years ago because he still had to look after the kids. His dialogue at the end of the first part strongly implied that he didn't want to leave them alone while they were still too young to live on their own.

The church has tatami flooring inside because Hanamaru said it reminded him of his hometown. Master is surprised that they have tatami in this world as well. Apparently the church was destroyed a number of years ago and while they were rebuilding/remodeling, Hanamaru had the tatami added.

It's been a number of years since the kids had Berrien's black tea. At the church they only have green tea. Hanamaru keeps a lot of traditional sweets/snacks (wagashi) and is like "Green tea pairs better with wagashi than black tea" so he only buys green tea.

The kids get along really well with Berrien, they like him a lot. The kids came to the mansion along with Hanamaru back in the day. Miyaji would teach them, Haures would train them how to fight with swords, Berrien would teach them table manners.

The kids corner Berrien for a lesson on how to brew tea, so the Master decides to take a walk around while he's busy. Berrien first says it's too dangerous to go alone, but Muu volunteers to go with them. He says, "It's okay, if anything happens I'll scream for help really loudly so you know something's wrong!" 🤣

We finally meet Hanamaru! Hanamaru is 36 years old, he likes wagashi and udon, he dislikes kids getting hurt and self-righteous people. His hobbies are poetry and gambling.

Hanamaru wants to go do something important nearby, so he asks the Master to accompany him. They walk and talk a bit on the way, and he offers some advice about not to trust people too easily because there are tons of people with wicked eharts in the world. He knows the butlers have recently gotten into a conflict with the Sardeis family but assures them that despite him also being from the Eastern Country, he has no relation to the Sardeis family. All he wants is to be able to build a peaceful world for his kids to grow up in.

They arrive at the place where Hanamaru wants to go: it's a hill at the edge of the forest, and it's covered with graves. Hanamaru says that the graves are for all of his kids--even though they're not related to him by blood, he considers the children of the orphanage to be his anyway.

5 years ago, the church was attacked by angels. He was away from the church at that time, and when he returned, all he saw was angels flying away from the ruined church. The graves are for all the children who were killed during that attack. Only four kids survived, the four that are living with him now.

He swore vengeance against the angels that day. He would never forgive the angels for taking away the children he swore to protect, but also he would never forvive himself for failing his kids. So now he's ready to become a devil butler to eradicate the angels.

Hanamaru leaves to go get his stuff ready to move into the mansion. While he's gone, the Master and Berrien talk a bit more about Hanamaru. Berrien reveals that Hanamaru has likely gone through even more terrible things in his past, even before the angel attack.

Hanamaru arrived at the church 10 years ago. At the time, the nun who was in charge of it found him collapsed in the forest, and she saved him. He was in very bad shape, especially his feet in particular. His feet had suffered a lot of damage because he had been walking or running non-stop-he basically walked the entire distance from the East to Central. Berrien doesn't know the reason, whether he was fleeing from his home or if something else drove him to leave. Berrien asked him about the situation, of course, but Hanamaru was very good at avoiding the topic and just didn't want to answer him.

During the attack 5 years ago, Hanamaru had a breakdown. He was saying things like "I still couldn't protect them" or "I swear I'll keep them safe next time". He was prostrating himself, kneeling and pressing his head against the ground.

So it's likely that the angel attack 5 years ago was not the first time he lost people who were important to him. Berrien thinks that the 4 kids that survived were all that kept Hanamaru here. Because they still needed him, he stuck around. If they weren't there… Berrien doesn't know what would have happened to Hanamaru.

The kids spring a surprise on Hanamaru: they've sorted out work and a place to live on their own, so they're going to move out of the church. They knew that if they stayed there on their own, Hanamaru would just be worrying nonstop over them, so they've figured out a way to support themselves and be independent so he won't have to worry.

At first it looks like Hanamaru is about to start crying about how they've grown up and how he'll miss them-- but then he reveals he was just kidding, did they really think this was going to make him start crying?

This is his face then btw 🤣

But he does admit that he's going to feel a little lonely without them, and starts a group hug for the kids before they all go their separate ways. The kids do start crying too, even though they're trying to remind each other that they decided they'd see Hanamaru off with a smile. They thank him for raising them and tell him that he better not die, and that they'll see each other again.

Back at the mansion, Miyaji, Lucas, and Teddy are there to welcome them back. Teddy and Hanamaru will be sharing a room, and Miyaji goes to give them a tour of the mansion and introduce the other butlers. Meanwhile, Berrien and Lucas stay behind to talk about their next move. They have 2 butlers, and so who's the last one that Berrien had his eye on?

Well, about that… Berrien says that this recruiment might be a little difficult. The third potential butler candidate is actually imprisoned, and scheduled to be executed in a few days. As Lucas and the Master are shocked at this news and wondering who it is, Berrien says that actually, this third candidate is someone they know already… Shinonome Yuuhan.

NON-SPOILER REVIEW Overall: I did enjoy myself. There is a lot of comedy in this one. It’s at least 50 - 60% comedy so everyone is laughing from start to finish. It’s about 80% scripted comedy and 20% improve comedy. It was very entertaining and very enjoyable. We all laughed the entire time. So if you just want to enjoy, laugh, have a good time, you are going to LOVE this stage! It’s just one long Hanamaru (the anime) episode to be honest. My favourite parts of the whole stage were definitely Manba and co’s dynamics and relationship. I really, really loved Sayo and Manba’s relationship and body language and small gestures towards each other throughout the play which really shows how close they’ve gotten. It’s really sad that Sayo is only there for the first Tokyo run because the little things he did for and towards Manba just melted my heart. Also, I really, really loved Manba and Doudanuki’s dynamic in this show too! I absolutely adored how Douda treated Manba this time around. However, personally, that’s not what I want from Touken Ranbu. I want pain, I want fighting, I want history, I want conflict. That does not happen in this stage. So this is not what I wanted. I started to get really bored and I got over the jokes after about 45 minutes into the show (the show is 145 minutes long). They repeat the same group/set of jokes about 10 times, so obviously I got bored of them. I feel like this plot could’ve been done in about 30 minutes. The fact they take the entire 145 minutes for this one simple plot line (it’s a really simple story), it really gets boring in some spots. The lack of fighting (which is less than 10 minutes long for the entirety of the play), the lack of history, the lack of conflict (even between the Touken Danshi!) really got to me and this just wasn’t what I wanted. Like I said, I did enjoy myself and I did laugh throughout and I did have a good time. But when Touken has set this ‘dark, despair, historical, fighting’ theme for so long, you can’t expect us to not expect that this time around, AND when we don’t get it, you can’t expect me not to be bored and disappointed. Which is what I am. Disappointed. Again. Rating: 5/10 (if you enjoy comedy and lighthearted stuff then this’d be about 8/10)

SPOILER REVIEW

Story: The story takes place after the events of the game (see details here). So we follow Chougi joining the gang at the Honmaru, but a lot of the gang are against Chougi and Manbachan (Yamanbagiri Kunihiro) meeting because Chougi is the ‘true’ Yamanbagiri sword. So they try to delay and play tricks so they can’t meet. And we follow those shenanigans.

I am going to break this down into three groups: ☆ The Good, × The Bad and △ the Neutral/General/Both-Good-and-Bad Comments! So get ready! I’ll do Good first!

☆ It’s difficult to describe, but I loved Sayo and Manba relationship in this one. There was a lot of body language and actions that showed just how much Sayo cared for Manba. There were many moments when he would sit next to Manba and look at him worried, checked if he was okay. When Chougi was trying to verbally attack Manba, Sayo was right by his side, ready to kick Chougi’s ass. Just the small things Sayo did for Manba throughout this play were just so pure and so adorable to watch. It’s such a shame that he’s only there for the Tokyo Shows because I would love see this development between these two’s relationship.

☆ Another relationship I loved in this one was Doudanuki and Manba. If you remember back in Mitsu/JyoDen, Doudan and Manba were always butting heads, but in this one, Doudan wouldn’t leave Manba’s side. He tried SO hard to protect Manba from Chougi, and he tried to hard to keep Chougi away from Manba throughout the entire play, which just shows how much he care for Manba! It was adorable!!

☆ Dounauki on his own is just so great in this stage series! I love Naoki’s performance of him every time!!

☆ At the end of the play, Manba finally got sent off to be Kiwame’d!! So in the next stage we’ll be getting Kiwame ManbaChan!! I cannot wait!

☆ Being able to see Aoki Jin’s acrobatics again was so good! He’s still got it!

☆ Riki as Nansei was adorable! He was really good at showing the catish characteristics he has! And his cat speech was adorable too!

☆ The Manba VS 6 Touken Danshi fight scene was very impressive on MakiChan’s part and it fit completely. Both MakiChan and ManbaChan could’ve wooped all their asses after all the years of training they’ve both technically done in sword fighting.

△ This is a mix of good and bad but, we cannot deny just how amazing MakiChan is at this point when to comes to sword fighting. His movements and his choreography is so good and such a high level by this point! But this is also a bad thing because... it makes it super obvious just how beginner everyone else (especially Chougi’s actor) is at sword fighting when he’s against them. I could painfully see the difference in their choreography levels, especially when MakiChan had fighting scenes against Chougi, and when he was fighting against 6 of the swords at the same time. Their movements and choreography just looks so mediocre and so clumsy and just don’t flow naturally at all next to him. 

△ There were mentions of Ookurikara, Yagen and Jiji throughout the play, so definitely hints they’ll come back in future plays(?). I am excited for Ookuri and Yagen but we all know how I feel about Jiji -_____-

△ Ginga as Gokotai was.... fine. He definitely got the voice and intimidated body language right but... boy’s pretty tall... would’ve been better to find a shorter person?

△ There were no ensemble this time at all.

△ There are no set changes at all. It all takes place at the Honmaru. The set is really big actually! I like how they used all parts of the set, even the upper levels!

△ The umbrellas this time have no names on them! It’s all projection mapped (their names) onto white umbrellas instead this time around.

△ Why are they performing an Autumn/Winter themed play in the middle of summer? The play constantly talks about how Autumn is coming to an end, so why did they perform this in Summer?! That’s hella stupid.

△ I really did enjoy a lot of the comedy parts and I did enjoy my time BUT this isn’t what I wanted from TouStage; this isn’t what I expect from TouStage.

△ What was the point of Maeda playing the narrator in this? And why was it split into chapters throughout the play?

× Because it’s just a comedy that is heavily scripted and nothing major really happens, I see no rewatchability value unfortunately. Once was enough.

× The Opening is very long. It’s a ten minute VIDEO of them fighting and finding Chougi. Why they made it a video instead of actually on stage, I don’t understand. Why it was such a long video? I also don’t understand.

× I strongly feel like they expanded and stretched what could’ve been a 45 minute story into 145 minutes. There was no need for this Chougi vs Manba conflict to go on for the entirety of the the stage. It got very repetitive, and it dragged quite a bit. 

× Also the second storyline about Gokotai? It felt very unnecessary and very much a throw away. It wasn’t needed for the point it was used for. It was used to reintroduce and set-up Jiji into the series and how they all miss him and want him back. But we really didn’t need Gokotai for it. In fact...

× ...50% of this cast is entirely unneeded and unnecessary! I have no idea why half of them were there! When they were all gathered on stage, I could easily look at them and pick out who could’ve been straight up removed. 

If you had to ask me who actually brought something to the story, I would say: Manba, Chougi, Sayo, Doudanuki, and Nansei. Kento was good for the comedy parts. So literally everyone else you could’ve cut out.

× It bothers me that once again, Suemitsu is just stealing from another idea. The Gokotai storyline is basically from Hanamaru, and of course the Chougi backstory is taken straight from the Game Event (which is not the point that bothers me). He seriously cannot make up his own ideas. He hasn’t written a good stage since TRUMP seriously (K Stage doesn’t count because it’s just a carbon copy of the anime). And WHY is he even back?! Hiden was supposed to be his last one! Everyone said! So WHY is he back? Give other writers a chance!

× It really infuriated me how they waited and expected the audience to applause at certain times. One or two times where it’s expected is FINE but the fact they pause and wait SO many times for the audience to clap was just cringey and ewwy. I understand that some jokes are positioned so the audience claps, but when it’s the amount that it is in this play? No thank you. Just makes the actors look cheap and egotistical.

× The soundtrack is completely forgettable this time around! I cannot remember one single tune that stuck to me. I’m a huge Soundtrack lover so the fact nothing caught my ears and nothing caught my attention nor stayed with me is just.... bad.

× This play seriously made me hate Chougi! I like Chougi in the game but in this? He’s just a pompous, ignorant prick. I walked out absolutely HATING him! How dare he treat Manba and the rest of them like that! Motherf-ker.

× Personally, I found no moving, no emotional, no sad moment in the play this time. That’s bad and boring writing in my opinion.

× I’ve said this many times already but, they repeat the same 4 or 5 jokes about 10 times within the first 75 minutes of the play. That is total overkill. It got old fast, I quickly got bored (the 45 minute point was when it was starting to grate on me).

× There is all of ONE fight scene the entire play, and (I timed it) it takes up less than 15 minutes of the entire play.  And it was glaringly obvious to see the skill level difference between MakiChan and everyone else (in all honesty).

× Another personal thing for me, but I find Kato Sho completely exhausting. He’s so damn loud and so over the top as Ookanehira. He just exhausts me. He’s great as himself but as Ookane? Just no thank you.

× Chougi and Manba don’t meet until the 75 minute part. Which is excessively late. You could’ve had them meet up about 30 minutes in. It really was stretched out too far.

× The theatre itself was freezing as FACK! Absolutely freezing in there!

And that’s all! In conclusion, it could’ve been much better and wasn’t what I wanted. But I feel like I say this EVERY TIME. Maybe I really should just stop. Why do I even say I like TouStage when it’s evident I’m disappointed like... every time! *sigh*
