Opposites Attract- J. Seresin
pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x female!reader word count: 3.7k warnings: mentions of sex, mentions of child birth, top gun things synopsis: how can Hangman, cocky, arrogant Hangman fall in love with a girl who is so different than him and raise a family completely opposite of him. based on these requests:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He must’ve gotten it from his mother. She was a shy person. Usually choosing situations where she didn’t need to talk to anyone new, where she could just smile and nod and look to her husband to do all the talking. His fellow pilots were confused by them: how could loud, obnoxious, bragging, douchebag Lt Jake “Hangman” Seresin, find someone as sweet and quiet as Y/N. It was one of life’s great mysteries. Her very first interaction with the group of Top Gun aviators had them all puzzled on how Hangman had secured her as his wife and hid her from them all.
“Who’s the babe at the bar?” Payback said, eyeing her from across the pool table. Hangman looked at his line of sight and smirked.
Sauntering over to where one of the pool balls was at, he leaned over, “That” he said, lining up his shot, “Is my wife.” He rammed the cue stick into Payback's gut making him double over in pain.
“Her? The quiet little thing over there?” Phoenix said, looking at her. Y/N waited patiently for Penny to get around to her, not yelling and trying to catch her attention like the other patrons at the bar, “What did you do? Hypnosis? Stockholm Syndrome?”
“Why is it so shocking that I'd be married to her?”
“Cause you’re nothing alike! She’s nice and you’re an ass. She’s pretty and you’re an ass. She’s quiet and you’re-“
“An ass?”
“Precisely,” Phoenix said as Hangman’s wife made her way back over to him. She walked directly to him, her head down not making eye contact with the other pilots. Hangman put his arm around her waist and pulled her in for a kiss, making her cheeks go red.
“Penny is busy, i’ll go back up-“
“I got it, love,” Hangman said, kissing her again.
“You sure? Cause I can-“
“It’s all good,” Hangman smiled at her. She nodded as he stepped past her, but not before giving her ass a light smack. She all but squealed at his action, turning even redder if that was possible. She turned her head slowly, looking at the eyes of his fellow aviators who were all looking at her. She gave them a shy smile, before turning her head and moving out of the way, and back towards Hangman.
“There’s no fucking way,” Phoenix muttered.
Everyone was enthralled with watching Hangman and his wife interact the whole night. It was a completely different side to him than any of his classmates had ever seen. His smile wasn’t a cocky arrogant one, it was bright and full of love as he twirled her around the makeshift dance floor in the Hard Deck. She giggled as he pressed kisses to her neck, singing the words of a song back to her.
“How did we not know about this?” Rooster said, looking at his enemy.
“This had to have happened recently,” Coyote said, taking a sip of his beer, “The whole aviator world woulda been talking about it.”
“Or he never told anyone until now,” Bob said with a shrug causing them all to look at him, “What?”
“It’s Hangman. He brags about everything. We would’ve known,” Phoenix said.
“Never know,” Bob said again.
But Bob was right, as much as Hangman wanted to show her off, and brag about her, he knew that she wouldn’t want that. She was quiet, and kept to herself and that’s what drew him to her. She was the shy girl at the bar in San Diego, his very first duty station, and Hangman knew the second he saw her, she was going to be his. She played hard to get at first, partially because she didn’t really trust him. She had heard the things the other girls around base had said about him. That he was just another pilot with a good smile, only there for a couple weeks before jetting off to the next place. He had a lot to prove, and he would be damned if he left without you by his side.
So he worked his charm over the three weeks he was there. He managed to break down her walls completely, wooing her the old fashioned way. Hangman proved the chivalry wasn’t dead, as he opened doors for her, always greeted her with a kiss on her hand, bringing her flowers for every date and at random times during the day, texting or calling her goodnight, walking her to the door after dates or waiting in his car to make sure she got all the way in the house and turned her bedroom lamp on to let him know she was safe.
When those three weeks came to an end, their goodbye was tearful and painful. Y/N stood in the airplane hangar with the rest of the aviator and naval wives, husbands, partners, kids, families, and hugged Hangman (or Jake as he had become to her) as fat tears rolled down her cheeks. He pulled away from the hug, holding her face in his hands and wiping the tears away.
“Don’t forget about me when you find yourself surrounded by beautiful women overseas.” She said, sniffling.
“Sweetheart, it would take a whole army and then some to make me forget about you,” Jake said, which made her blush. Any sort of pet name he called her had a red hue climbing up the back of her neck, “Just don’t forget about me.”
“I could never, would never!” She smiled. Jake looked at her, her soft eyes looking into his. And for some reason, some spell was cast and Jake didn’t hesitate but to lean in and kiss her for the first time.
That kiss had sealed the deal for both of them. The second Jake had landed back stateside, he went running to her house, finding her out in her garden, dirt and sweat on her face. Jake ran right to her, not having a care in the world, wrapping her in his arms and kissing her.
“Marry me.”
“What?” She said, looking at him like he had grown a second head, “Did you hit your head? Is this from the lack of oxygen? I know what they say about that, what is it, g. . . g-loc? Yeah, g-”
“No, my brain is working just fine, sweetheart,” Jake smiled, “I mean it, marry me.”
“This isn’t world war two, you aren’t going to-”
“Y/N.” He cut off your rambling once again, seeing that glint in your eye was enough to get his answer.
“Yes!”
It was like a fairy tale come true for the both of them. They didn’t even tell their families when they ran off to city hall, getting married in a whirlwind, partially due to the fact that Jake had been selected for the Top Gun program. He had shared the news with her that morning, and he could hardly register when she told them “well we better go get married then.” And they did exactly that. Jake threw on his khaki uniform, and she dug out a white sundress that had been buried in the back of her closet. Once the papers were signed, Jake drove up the coast, finding a small hideaway he had discovered one night while driving around.
That night she had given herself to him fully. She had never been touched the way Jake touched her, and he loved it. He was gentle with her, which was unusual for him. He took his time, letting her know every single thing he loved about her. The way her back arched when he kissed a certain spot, the way his name fell like a prayer from her lips, the way she dug her nails into his shoulders, the way she looked like a complete goddess in the backseat of his 1974 monte carlo. Jake held her tightly as her chest heaved up and down, coming down from the bliss. They didn’t mean for it to happen, but they fell asleep in the back of the small car, waking up to the sounds of seagulls above them.
It was less than a year after they were married that Y/N found out she was pregnant. She was alone, sitting on the bathtub ledge, her head in her hands as she cried. Hangman was out on a mission, something short, and he promised to be home soon. But it didn’t make things any better. She was terrified. They had moved to the middle of nowhere, Lemoore California. The tiny naval base was nice and quiet, but far from the only family Y/N had in the whole state. She was used to being on her own, and being independent. Growing up shy, she had to learn to do things for herself. But raising a whole other human on her own was going to be hard.
The second Jake came through the door, she told him. He stood there frozen in the doorway, duffle back still in his hand as his brain tried to process what she had just said. It scared her even more seeing his face go blank, but the second his duffle bag hit the floor with a loud bang and he was pulling her into his arms again, she felt relaxed. The two of them had spent all night getting reacquainted with each other, and then laying in bed naked, feeling each other’s bare bodies as they talked about their future child. Jake had promised to do the best he could to be there for every single appointment.
The day that Alexander Miles Seresin was born, was the second happiest day of Jake’s life. Y/N had handled the past nine months like champ, and Jake had fallen in love with her more and more every day. Seeing her glowing and growing the child had set something off inside of him, something primal. The sex they had while she was pregnant was some of the best sex he had ever had. He could hardly keep his hands off of her. When her water broke, he went into a near panic, forgetting every single thing they had ever talked about. Jake, the cool, calm and collected naval fighter pilot, who had shot down a plane, felt like he was going to pass out watching Y/N deliver their child. He hated seeing her in pain, but the second their son was placed on his chest, he felt nothing but pure love.
From the day Alex was born, he looked just like his father. Blonde hair, piercing blue eyes, naturally sunkissed skin. Jake loved every minute he got to spend at home with his wife and son. It made it harder to have to go on missions. He had missed birthdays, christmases, and big milestones. Y/N did a good job at recording everything and sending it to him so he could watch them out in the middle of the ocean. Y/N would call Jake almost every night, letting him read a bedtime story to Alex, watching over facetime as the little boy would stare intently at her phone screen at his dad.
“Where dada?” Alex asked one night, his voice thick with sleep.
“I’m on the ship, buddy,” Hangman said, his voice sounding faraway and sad.
“The big ship?” Alex asked, his eyes growing wide with excitement. One of Alex’s favorite things was planes, which was a no brainer considering who his dad was.
“The big ship,” Hangman smiled, “I promise I’ll be home when you wake up.”
“Okay dada,” Alex said, and curled into his mother. Y/N patted his back and said goodnight to her husband before tucking her son in, “Dada flies planes?”
“He does buddy,” Y/N said, making sure he was secure in his bed.
“I fly planes too.” Alex said, clutching onto his stuffed F/A-18 that Hangman had gotten him.
Alex had just turned three when Hangman got the call that he was needed back at Top Gun. Y/N looked at him, and all but ran to start packing. She had missed San Diego and was looking for any reason to go back and visit. But hearing that Jake would be going back to Top Gun made her nervous. She had all sorts of questions, which he couldn’t answer simply because he didn’t know. What he did know was that he was allowed to bring his family, which was his main concern. So, he packed the three of you up, packing his ford explorer (which he got after much grumbling from Y/N when she got pregnant with Alex) and drove his family the eight hours to San Diego.
— — —
The following week, after getting reunited with everyone at the Hard Deck, Jake had come home from training almost every day upset. He would sigh, and flop down on the shitty couch, and watch Alex play with his toy planes in front of him. The training was hard enough as it was but with his counterparts constantly teasing him about his wife that was the total opposite of him, he had had enough. The second Fanboy had seen the polaroid of Y/N tapped to Jake's dash in his plane, the teasing commenced.
“Why don’t we invite everyone over?” Y/N asked one day softly, as she wiped her hands on her apron, “I would like to meet your friends.”
“You would?” Jake said, turning to look at you, “But you met them the other night?”
“More like they just stared at me like I’m some mythical creature,” She giggled. Jake stood up from the couch, walking over to her and wrapping his arms around her.
“You are a goddess and they couldn’t take their eyes off of how perfect you are,” Jake said to her, making her blush and hide her face. He gently grabbed her chin, making her head turn back to him, “Don’t hide that smile from me, gorgeous.” Jake flashed her his perfect, beautiful white smile and then leaned down to kiss her cheek.
“Daddy!” Alex called.
“Yes, my man?” Jake said, and picked him up, groaning loudly as he did so. Alex let out a bunch of giggles as Jake held him upside down in his arms, “What did you do today?”
“Went to the ship!” Alex exclaimed and Jake looked at her confused.
“We went to the Midway museum.”
“Babe, if you want to see some real ships and planes, just come in tomorrow.” Jake said, causing her to shrug, “You won’t get in trouble.”
“Let’s start with dinner first, and then consider sneaking me on to base.” She said, walking back into the kitchen to finish cooking.
By the time the weekend rolled around, Y/N was a nervous wreck. Everything had to be perfect, this was very important after all. She was meeting Jake’s friends, his coworkers, the best Naval fighter pilots in the US Navy. She woke up around six in the morning to start preparing and cleaning their small rental house. She had vacuumed, scrubbed the floors, and washed the windows, restocked the fridge, bought enough food to feed an army (literally), and hopefully enough beer (though she had seen the way these sailors think and was questioning if she should make another beer run).
Jake had tried to help Y/N during the day, but she pushed him away, telling him she would let him know when he was needed. Around five in the evening, she had finally asked him to do something, while he was up off the couch running to her beck and call. He had fired up the grill, and started getting things ready to grill as she was getting dressed in a floral sundress. Alex was in navy blue shorts, a white button up and his birks.
“Do we look okay?” She asked Jake, stepping out into the backyard. She held Alex’s hand and Jake smiled at them. He was wearing almost the same thing as Alex, except he had on a pair of white vans instead.
“You both look great,” Jake said walking over to you. He picked Alex up, setting him on his hip, “You need to stop stressing.”
“I want things to be perfect. These are your coworkers and your boss and-”
“Everything is perfect, they already love you and they just stared at you from afar the other night,” Jake said, taking her hand in his free one, “You are easy to love, which is why I fell for you so fast.”
“Stop it,” She blushed, and looked down at her feet. The doorbell rang, making her snap her head up. Jake saw the look in her eye, the anxiety of having to meet and talk to strangers. Jake kissed her cheek and set Alex down.
“I got it, watch the burgers for me, please,” Jake said, and she nodded, as he ran to the front door.
“Damn Hangman, took you long enough,” Phoenix said as he opened the door, “So how did you get the good shit off base while we are stuck breathing in the scent of black mold?”
Jake just smirked, letting in Phoenix, Bob, and Coyote, “Sometimes, you gotta know people.”
Y/N peeked her head to look inside the house to see who was here, when she felt a tug on her dress. She looked down to see her little boy with the same blue eyes as her lover. He too was full of anxiety about having to meet new people, and it was obvious in the way he held on to her leg and tried to hide behind her. Y/N felt her heart break and knelt down to his level.
“Are you ready to meet some new people?” Y/N asked her son.
“Are they nice?” Alex whispered.
Y/N smiled, “The nicest, come on.” Y/N took her son’s hand and walked into the house, which was already full of loud aviators, cracking open beers and having a laugh. But all eyes seemed to fall on her the second she walked through the sliding glass door, the little boy’s hand in hers squeezed her tighter, “Hi.”
“Hi,” Jake said, and then walked over to them. He picked up Alex, and side by side, they looked like twins, “This is my wife, Y/N, which you guys already know from the other night,” Y/N waved at the group of aviators, who waved back, but their eyes were on the little boy who was burying his head into his father’s neck, “And this is Alex, my son.”
“You have a kid?” Rooster asked, completely shocked by the news, “Since when?”
“Since about four years ago, keep up Rooster, shut your jaw you’ll catch flies,” Jake said and Rooster rolled his eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell any of us this? She must’ve had him when-”
“When you two were both stationed in Korea,” Y/N said, cutting Phoenix off, “You’re Phoenix, right?”
“Yeah. . . Hangman, have you told her all about us?” Phoenix said with a smile, “You let me drown in the testosterone fest in Lemoore and didn’t tell me I could’ve had another female to hang out with!”
She felt like a weight was lifted off her shoulders once the initial introduction of the family was over. Everyone fell into natural conversation. The boys gathered around the grill, as Y/N, Phoenix and Halo sat at the table in the backyard. Jake couldn’t get over how beautiful his wife looked in the setting summer sun. The gentle golden hour glow made her look like a goddess, her tan skin literally looked like there were gold flakes in it, her hair looked shiny. He paused for a second as he watched her laugh at something Phoenix said, he noticed her hand, the hand her wedding ring sat on, resting on her stomach.
“Is she-” Jake asked himself.
“Yo! You're gonna burn this shit!” Payback yelled, snapping Jake out of his trance. Jake shook his head and turned back to the grill, making note to ask her a question later.
It brought joy to Y/N’s heart seeing her little shy boy grow comfortable around the group of aviators. He slowly warmed up to them, still clinging to Jake as he cooked the hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill for the group. But the second Bob had rambled off some facts about the toy F-22 raptor in the little boy’s hand, he had made a new best friend.
Y/N couldn’t help but giggle as Bob and Payback chased Alex around the backyard with toy fighter jets in their hands. Rooster and Hangman seemed to put whatever beef they had aside and were civil to one another. Rooster had easily made friends with the little boy, making him giggle as he walked around the backyard with Alex on his shoulders so his plane could have a proper lift off and landing.
“It must be hard when he is gone,” Phoenix said, as she helped you clean up from dinner. The guys were now sitting in the backyard by the fire pit, breaking into the bottle of scotch Rooster had once been gifted from Maverick. Alex was fast asleep on Jake’s chest as he rocked him slowly in one of the outdoor rocking chairs.
“It was when Alex was first born and he had to jet off to Korea. Those six months were hell, it felt like Jake had missed everything,” Y/N said, drying a plate. She paused a second after putting it away, choosing her next words very carefully. She placed a hand on her stomach, taking a deep breath. The small action didn’t go unnoticed by the female aviator, “He won’t tell me about it,” She looked over at Phoenix, who froze, “It means one of two things, he’s not really doing anything, just sitting in classes and it’s boring, or. . . there’s a chance we could lose him.”
Phoenix sighed and hung her head, looking down at her shoes. She thought to herself a second, closing her eyes. She turned around and leaned against the counter, facing Y/N. Phoenix didn’t have to say anything, Y/N could tell that it was the later option of her statement. Y/N felt tears in her eyes as she looked back into the backyard, seeing Jake’s bright smile as he laughed at some story Fanboy had told. Alex hadn’t even moved an inch, but cuddled deeper into Jake’s chest. Jake bent his head down and placed a kiss on the top of the boy's blonde head of hair.
Y/N bit her lip and looked at Phoenix, “Make sure he comes home.”
“I will,” She said to Y/N.
“Make sure you all, come home,”

Congrats on 2K Kait!!!! And this celi is gonna be so fun, but don’t stress yourself out <333
☕️☕️☕️ I’d love a drink of “carefully initiating slight intimacy (like holding hands, hugging, etc.) since they aren't quite sure how far they could go with where they are” from List D with Jake “Hangman” Seresin.
Thank you so much <33
may have strayed a little from the prompt but i hope you enjoy anyways!
jake "hangman" seresin x reader, 1.3k, join the celebration!
To make it extremely clear, you were not dating Jake Seresin.
He was one of the most remarkable people you’d ever had the pleasure of being friends with, kind and funny and braver than most folks would ever admit, but no, you weren’t dating him.
You really, really wanted to, though. You just weren’t sure if that’s what he wanted too.
Sometimes you got the feeling he did, like when Nat had caught him staring at you from behind the rim of his beer and very loudly called him out in front of everyone for unashamedly ogling you. He’d vehemently denied any said ogling with flaming red cheeks, but you noticed him doing it again three more times that same night.
Or when you went to the farmer’s market with him one Sunday morning and it was so crowded you were positive you’d lose him in the throngs of people. He slid his hand into yours that time, lacing your fingers together tightly as you tugged him to tent after tent.
Sometimes you thought about how you weren’t all that slick either.
Like that time Mickey invited you to the beach with all of them, and you got so distracted by Jake’s shirtless chest during dogfight football you nearly missed the pass he’d lobbed you. It all worked out in the end though, because when Jake’s team inevitably won, he’d hugged you and spun you around gleefully.
It was worth it to feel the press of his chest against yours.
You found yourself looking for him everywhere you went, regardless of whether he was actually there or not. You’d like to run into him at the mundane places—grocery store, laundromat, coffee shop—just so you’d be able to spend more time with him.
But those were totally platonic, good friend things to do, right?
Like always, your eyes searched for Jake as soon as you stepped into the Hard Deck tonight, scanning the packed bar for any sign of that telltale blond head of hair you wanted to see so badly.
Today especially, because you’d had one hell of a day at work. Between spilling coffee on your shirt first thing in the morning, to your shitty boss lecturing you about an error that wasn't even your fault, to hitting the worst traffic imaginable on the way home, you could really use one of his special Jake pep talks right now.
Much to your dismay, you spotted Rooster first, and although you did enjoy his presence, he wasn’t the man you were looking for. You made your way over anyways, greeting everyone as cheerfully as you could given your circumstances, still looking around for Jake.
“Hangman’s getting another round, if you wanted to put your order in.” Nat informed you, nodding towards the bar. Lo and behold, there he was a head above the rest, broad shoulders helping you spot him almost immediately. You weren’t sure how you’d missed him upon first glance.
You thanked Nat quickly, wasting no time in making your way over until you’d pushed up next to him at the bartop. Maybe a little too quickly, because your shoulder bumped against his arm a bit harshly, and his head whipped in your direction, probably an expletive at the tip of his tongue. When he saw it was just you, his expression did a complete 180, now a grin so big his eyes crinkled at the edges.
“Was wonderin’ when you’d be showin’ your face around here tonight.” His smooth, Texas twanged voice had part of the tension dropping from your shoulders. He seemed to notice because his smile dropped a little bit and he tilted his head, regarding you with those pretty green eyes you always found yourself getting lost in. “Y’alright, darlin’?”
“Yeah. Just…horrible day.” You sighed, drumming your fingers against the weathered wood. Jake raised an inquisitive brow, his invitation for you to talk about it. So you did, telling him every shitty little thing that happened since the moment you woke up to the second you pulled into the bar parking lot.
As soon as you were done, it instantly felt like a weight had been lifted off your shoulders—not all of it, but enough to the point where you didn’t feel like you were about to burst into tears at any given moment. Jake’s eyes hadn’t left yours the whole way through, keeping you tethered to him with every slow nod and brow crease.
“Sounds like you’ve had quite a time today.” He said quietly, sliding his hand over yours. His palm was calloused and warm, thumb rubbing along your knuckles soothingly. “I’m so sorry, darlin’. Wish I coulda been there for you, maybe knocked some common sense into your idiot boss.”
“Can I just—can you hug me? I really feel like I need a hug right now.” You weren't sure if that was asking too much of him, considering you didn’t quite know where the two of you stood in terms of what you were to each other, but you had to ask.
“Sure. Of course I can, c’mere.” Jake opened his arms for you as soon as the words left your mouth, letting you bury yourself against his chest like you’d done it a thousand times before.
But really, you’d never hugged Jake before. Not like this, at least. A few brief greeting hugs, thank you hugs, celebrating your win at partners beer pong at a barbeque hugs—but you'd never felt so safe in someone’s arms as you felt in Jake’s right now. They were strong, circling around you tightly, one hand smoothing up and down the length of your spine slowly, the other cradling the back of your head. You felt like you could weather a storm and still be okay here.
He smelled like laundry detergent and musky cologne when you inhaled, strong but somehow still comforting at the same time, and the cotton of his flannel shirt was soft against your cheek. When you were this close to him, you could feel the rise and fall of his chest with every breath he took, the way his breath hitched when you hugged him a little tighter than he’d expected.
And you could’ve been wrong, but you swore you could feel his heart beating a little too fast.
“Thank you, Jake. I really needed that.” You sighed, pulling away from him (a little too soon for your liking, if you were being totally honest). “Sorry if it was weird, I just—”
Jake clicked his tongue, smiling at you warmly. “Don’t be sorry, darlin’, I’m glad I could help. You can hug me anytime, alright?”
He licked his lips, clearing his throat before speaking again, voice a lot less confident than you’d ever heard it before. His cheeks were tinged pink too, maybe from the heat of the crowded bar. (Or maybe from you.) “And maybe next time you have a bad day, you can call me? We can go out for lunch or somethin’, help get your mind off the shitty things.”
“You’ll be at work, Jake.”
“The Navy does give us lunch breaks too, y’know.” He joked, giving your shoulder a gentle nudge.
“It’s still clear across town. I couldn't.”
“I’d be there in a heartbeat. I’d even take the damn jet if I had to.”
You couldn't help but let the corners of your mouth lift up into a shy smile. “Pretty sure that's illegal, Lieutenant.”
“But would you? Take me up on the lunch date?” Date. He said date. You smiled even bigger because Jake looked nervous, and he never looked nervous. You’d be lying to yourself if you weren’t enjoying the effect you seemed to be having on him right now.
“I would.”
“Good. I’m glad.” Jake gathered the beers Penny had set on the bar for him into his hands, shooting you one of those shiny, charming smiles that made you fall for him in the first place as he backpedaled towards the rest of your friends. “Maybe we can do a test run, say…tomorrow, noon? I’ll pick you up.”
“I’d love that.”
So no, you weren't dating Jake Seresin. But maybe, just maybe, after a few lunch dates, you could be.

OMGGG could u write a short blurb about eras tour with jake…. 😭😭😭 now its stuck in my head
😭😭😭 yes because it is stuck in my head too (also eras tour with bradley ugh ugh ugh)
-
“Cause karma is my boyfriend,” you find yourself singing out loud along with the 70,000 strong crowd. You lean into Jake at the same moment you sing out the lyrics, as he pulls you towards him, the both of you moving in one co-ordinated move.
Your eyes meet Jake’s, and you can feel the reverberations of the lyrics through his chest from the way your shoulder is pressed up against his body and it makes the grin on your face even wider. You let yourself take him in, the best as you can in such close proximity - black tshirt on with the words “KARMA” emblazoned in the front, and a handful of colourful, beaded bracelets hugging his forearm - the sight makes you giggle.
Jake had always been sporting, a man up for anything you wanted to do - but this, coming to a Taylor Swift concert with you and a hoard of your friends, letting you deck him out in the appropriate gear for the occasion, that was something that you hadn’t been entirely sure he would have done.
“Karma is a god,” you sing out loud to Jake and he pulls you closer towards him before singing back.
“Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend,” he lets actions accompany his words as he brings a hand up, fluffing the ends of your hair upwards with his palm.
“Karma is a relaxing thought,” you all but shout back with a laugh.
Best. Concert. Ever.

Little Did I Know -three- Jake "Hangman" Seresin
Katherin 'Kate' Buckley lived and worked on the Seresin Family Ranch her whole life. Now she has the pleasure of helping run it. She loves her way of life, loves the simplicity of it. That is, until Jake Sersesin shows back up, looking extremely worse for wear. Slowly, Kate learns that she knows nothing about the man she used to call her best friend anymore. Meanwhile, Jake realizes he doesn't know how to live this kind of life anymore.
Tumblr media
“Mount up, and be quick about it,” Kate told Leah, “I have maybe an hour.”
“Why’d you bring me a horse then?” Leah questioned as she hoisted herself into the saddle.
Kate shrugged before gently urging Echo forward, “Better keep up, we’re going to the creek.”
Leah let out a big sigh before giving her horse a kick. Kate was racing in front of her, laughing about how Leah couldn’t keep up. The two girls hadn’t raced one another in years. Or at least, they hadn’t raced on purpose in years.
Leah bit her lip and kicked a little harder as well as giving several vocal queues to her horse to speed up. She inched closer to the older woman, but she still knew she wouldn’t be able to keep up with Echo if Kate decided she really wanted to run. Echo might as well have been as fast as lightning, she could out run any of the stallions on the ranch, just like Kate could easily show any of the cowboys where they belonged.
The creek came into view just as Kate gently tugged on her reins, “Okay, easy girl. There you go.”
She leaned forward so she could rub Echo’s neck.
“I forgot how fast you two are,” Leah sounded out of breath as her horse trotted up next to Echo.
Kate flashed a smile before dismounting and tying Echo to a nearby tree, “C’mon, we have some things to talk about.”
“Is this about Jake being back?” Leah asked, sitting down on one of the logs, “Because honestly, he’s not-”
“No, it’s not about him,” Kate cut off Leah, “It’s about you hanging out where you don’t belong.”
“What do you mean exactly?” Leah questioned.
“You know exactly what I’m talking about, Leah,” Kate rolled her eyes, “He’s bad news.”
“Oh…him,” Leah nearly whispered, “It was stupid.”
“Yeah, kiddo, it was stupid,” Kate replied bluntly, “However, I did the same thing when I was your age. Lord knows I had my fair share of the new young cowboys, but my dad doesn’t own the ranch. It’s different when both parties are on payroll. Your daddy signs the damn checks.”
“I know,” Leah sighed, “I’m just tired of being alone.”
“Well, fucking a cowboy is not the way to stop feeling lonely,” Kate told her softly, “To them, you’re just a conquest. CJ is a douchebag at the very least, he thinks sleeping with you gives him something, some way to stop being the bottom man. Which is not the case after the way he talked about you.”
“He-”
“He’ll be the bottom man until pigs fly,” Kate didn’t allow Leah to ask any questions, “I have your back, and your best interest in mind. You know that. You’re damn lucky Paul, Adam, and Dustin do too. They can keep the boys from talking when I’m not there. But honey, you need to stop this. No more, for your own sake.”
“I feel like I need the distractions more now than I did. He’s home and he’s hurt…he won’t talk about any of it,” Leah’s voice broke, “We almost lost him…he wouldn’t let them call us until he was being discharged, and even then…He’s my big brother, and I love him, but it hurts to even look at him right now.”
“Anytime you need to get away, you just call me. Or go see my mama, you know how much she loves you,” Kate offered, trying not to think about Jake, “The two of you can make pies together, like you did growing up.”
“Still doesn’t change the fact that dad hates coming home, mom is drinking herself to sleep every night and Jake is hiding from all of us. I don’t have anyone in that house that actually cares about me.”
Leah was crying now. But she was trying to hide it behind her long blonde hair. Her head was dipped down, and she kept trying to act like she wasn’t wiping tears away. She was just like a Seresin, refusing to let anyone see her be anything other than strong. Kate felt her heart crack as she wrapped her arms around the young girl.
“But you have plenty in the bunk house,” Kate reminded her, “If you need to get away from the house, if it gets too much….I’ll pull out of the bunk and put Paul or Adam in charge and you and I can stay with my parents. Okay? We can be your family for as long as you need us, you know that.”
Leah nodded slowly, “I know. I was so excited to have him home again….but I didn’t expect it to be like this.”
“Do you want me to go talk to him?”
“No… he wants to be left alone.”
That didn’t stop Kate from repeatedly banging on the front door of the guest house several hours later. The sun was already setting, turning everything shades of gold and pink. When Kate didn’t hear any movement inside, she banged even harder against the heavy wooden door.
“I know you’re in there,” Kate yelled, “Open the damn door, Seresin.”
She banged again before hearing a loud thud, “I’m coming, damnit.”
The door flung open a minute later. Jake’s hair was sticking up everywhere, and he was leaning on one crutch. He looked even worse than he did when she saw him last night. She finally allowed herself to look at him. He wasn’t the boy she grew up with anymore.
“Why are you here?” Jake grumbled.
“Because your sister desperately wants her big brother to be a part of her life,” Kate stated, “And instead he’s locked himself away here.”
Jake swallowed a thick lump in his throat before shaking his head, “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
She scoffed and walked past him to get into the house, “I know that I’ve been here for Leah everyday since you left.”
“And I can’t thank you enough for that,” Jake said gruffly, “But you don’t get to butt in on this.”
“The hell I can’t,” She hissed, turning around to face him, “She’s more my sister than yours. I was here when she went through her first breakup, I’ve protected her from the guys that just wanted the status of being with a Seresin. I went with her when she needed to find a prom dress, or one for graduation. I’ve given her somewhere to run when your other sisters come home. I’ve been here, Jacob, you haven’t. You left and never looked back.”
“Don’t put that on me,” His voice was low, yet he didn’t move from his space in front of the door, “Don’t blame me for this.”
“Your baby sister just wants to spend time with you! You haven’t been here long enough to do that in nearly a decade,” Her voice was even louder, “I don’t care what you have to do, but get your shit together enough to spend time with her. Because she’s an amazing person, and you don’t know the first thing about her.”
“Is that it?” Jake wasn’t even looking at her now. His attention seemed to be on the floor just in front of his feet.
Kate felt something deep in her chest. She wasn’t particularly mad at Jake for how Leah felt, but any sort of anger she might have been harboring disappeared. He looked broken, and not just physically. For a moment she wondered how bad he really looked underneath his big hoodie and sweatpants. She could see the cut across his cheekbone and the bruising. She could see the boot on one of his legs. But she couldn’t help but wonder about what was going on underneath everything else.
“Yeah,” She whispered, licking her lips, “That’s all. I uh- I told the cowboys to keep clear of the houses. No one will bother you.”
“Aside from you,” He said softly.
“No, uh, I’m sorry-” She squared her shoulders, “It won’t happen again. I apologize for interrupting your evening, Mr. Seresin. I’ll show myself out.”
“Kate-”
“I’ll have mama cook up some more food for you next week,” She said quickly as she made her way towards the door, “Dad can drop it off.”
Jake struggled to take a step towards her, “It’s better for everyone if they don’t know.”
“No,” She felt her heart sink, “It’s only better for you.”
Hours later she found herself in a bar with the rest of the boys. Since it was a Saturday night, they were all free to let loose a little bit. They never did any hard work on Sundays, that was Mrs. Seresin’s one rule of the ranch. Sunday was for rest.
“Here, got you another,” Paul nudged Kate’s arm with a cold beer bottle.
“Thanks,” She took a large gulp, watching a couple of the guys dance with some girls from town, “At least they’re having fun.”
“Well, why aren’t you? Still thinking about the younger Mr. Seresin?”
“Jake, his name is Jake, paul. You know that, you’ve used it plenty of times growing up,” She rolled her eyes, “And yes, still thinking about that asshole. I’m always thinking about him.”
Paul then took a long sip of his beer, “He’s a jackass.”
“I think something bad happened. He seems, I don’t know…broken? Maybe? I don’t think he’ll talk to anyone about it though,” She admitted before gulping down half of the beer, “I’m honestly a little worried.”
“He’s a big boy,” Paul shrugged, “He can handle himself. You don’t have to take care of him anymore.”
“Oh, I know. Old habits and shit though,” She laughed, “Now, if you’ll excuse me, that rodeo cowboy has been making fuck me eyes at me for a while now. I plan on seeing what I can do about it.”
“Call me, I’ll come get you in the morning.”
She winked at him from over her shoulder, “Who said I was spending the night?”
Paul smiled and leaned against the bar, “Yes ma’am.”
Kate wasn’t sure what time she stumbled back onto the ranch. She was glad that she had her own place to go back to, instead of her parent’s house. The boys in the bunkhouse could keep quiet if she showed up with a split lip, or the faint tint of bruising somewhere else. They all seemed to get more protective over her for a while. Not quite baby her, but make sure that she knew that they all had her back. Slowly, everyone would forget about it. Until the next time she came home like that. Tonight was one of those nights, a split lip and the hint of a bruise forming on her jaw.  She knew she’d have finger prints on her arms, maybe her legs too. But that would be something to worry about later. Now, she just needed to sleep off the headache and the emotions.
One thing about Kate, she never knew how to pick a man.

Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Hailey Dugan
Masterlist [~~~~]

Series Warnings: Mentions of child abuse, smut (later on in the series), age gap? (like 6 years because I feel like Jake is around like 32/33, lemme me know if you disagree), cursing. MINORS PLEASE DO NOT INTERACT 18+ content in later chapters.
----------------------
Jake "Hangman" Seresin was finally settling into his new posting in North Carolina. He is back up in the air after his last mission and back to raising hell like always. Yet he can't help but miss The Dagger Squad and after watching Liv and Rooster tie the knot he is feeling just a tad bit lonely and longing for something more. Not that he would ever admit it though. However when he gets some new neighbors in the form of a stunning 26 year old plant-shop owner and a 7 year-old boy, Jake just might feel that tiny little whole in his chest filling. His new neighbor is kind yet fierce, and as she struggles to navigate the new realm of guardianship over her younger brother her next door neighbor is more help then she could have every imagined.

-2 Months Later-
The loft is incredibly quiet, I sit at my kitchen counter sipping on coffee as I flip through the latest inventory report. Lucas has yet to stir, but he doesn't need to be up for another 30 minutes. My phone dings but I know who it is. Matthew has been trying and failing to come up with a half-decent excuse to see me. I ended things two days after I brought Lucas home and Matthew quite loudly told me I was ruining my life.
Asshole
Lucas also decided then and there that he hated Matthew and had 'accidentally' sent his little rocket toy straight into his groin. I had laughed so hard I nearly cried and I had yet to see Matthew for more than a few minutes at a time. Once when he came to get his things and I returned the engagement ring and another when he cornered me in the shop. I had threatened to hit him with a shovel until he left. I had no want to see him then and I have no want now.
"Can you make pancakes for breakfast?" Lucas' voice is soft and groggy and I turn to the curly mop of hair that is truly a sight to behold after he first wakes up.
"Sure bub."
Lucas grins and climbs onto the high barstool of our kitchen island and rubs the sleep from his eyes. His cast is still a bulky annoyance on his wrist but he gets it off in a week and I'm sure he can't wait.
I had packed most of the kitchen things away for the move but I pulled the things out that I needed and started to make the pancakes. Lucas and I found the perfect house for both of us and since I've saved up a lot I was able to snatch it up pretty quick.
The savings was supposed to be for a wedding but fuck that
So I was able to put the down payment and pay most of it off. I've spent the last week decorating Lucas' room. He said he has always wanted a baseball-themed room so with the help of Maura we did a baseball-themed bedroom. It's not too kiddish so when he grows he isn't too embarrassed.
If you win custody and he can even grow up in that room.
I push that thought away and busy myself with the pancakes.
"Can we get a cat?"
I glance over at Lucas who is staring at me. He is resting his chin on his non-broken hand.
"That seems a bit random. What makes you want a cat?"
"It's not random," Lucas says in a serious tone I rarely hear from him. "I love cats and so do you. They are very easy and I saw a book at Dr. Kelter's office about how some animals can help with stress and anxiety. Plus! We are moving into a whole house so plenty of room." I want to laugh at the amount of thought he put into this but his comment about stress and anxiety snags my attention.
"Are you feeling a bit anxious again bub? That's okay but I want to know so I can help."
"Not really. Dr. Kelter helps a lot and I feel really safe with you."
My heart melts and I lean over kissing his forehead.
"I always want you to feel safe Lucas."
"I really like staying with you." He says softly.
"I really love you staying with me bub." I take a deep breath. "You know there's always a chance I can try to make it permanent."
Lucas peers through his curls.
"Really? Like I wouldn't go back to Arizona?"
"Yeah, but that also means you would stay with me, and you might not get to see Mom as much as you'd like." I want to be honest with him despite my feelings towards our mom.
Lucas is quiet for a moment. "I don't feel safe with mom though I feel safe with you. Do you think she'd be mad if she knew I wanna stay here with you instead of with her? I don't know if I wanna make her mad"
"I don't know honey. But I also wanna make sure you don't feel confused. So why don't I ask Dr. Kelter if you guys can talk about it in your next session?"
Lucas nods. I finish the pancakes and cut them up for him.
"Alright, here you go bubs."
His eyes light up as I push the plate in front of him, temporarily forgetting our previous conversation.
"Thanks, Hails," Lucas mutters.
"No problem bub, I'm gonna go get dressed and get your things together for school. Whenever you're finished get ready please."
"Mkay." He mumbles through a mouthful of pancakes.
I ruffle his hair and place a kiss on the top of his head before heading to get ready. I take a deep breath when I'm out of his view.
Holy crap
I wasn't expecting that conversation today. I have been trying to figure out how to bring it up. I followed Erica's advice and I got a lawyer as soon as I got back to North Carolina. I hadn't told Lucas, he was dealing with a lot of emotions and I didn't want to confuse him.
My phone starts blaring Taylor Swift in my pocket. Luckily that is not Matthew's ringtone but it is Maura's. It does snap me out of my little stupor though.
"What are you doing up so early it's not even past 8 yet." I joke as I answer and I can practically see her roll her eyes.
"What are you doing tonight?"
"Lucas and I were gonna watch a movie and eat popcorn in a fort with all the boxes."
She huffs. "Crap do you think it's too late to get a babysitter?"
I laugh softly. "Probably, but why would I need a babysitter?"
"There's a new bar opening and I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a Navy bar, so some of the guys from the base should be there and you know I am a sucker for that uniform."
I laugh.
"Not that I'm in love with that idea but I think Collin's mom mentioned a sleepover on her weekend with him and I think that's this week. I'll ask her at drop off today."
"You're the best! Oh, you should wear that blue dress that you ..."
"I gotta go Maura."
"Love you!"
I pull on some of my work clothes, which mainly consist of old T-shirts and jean shorts. Or the occasional overall or leggings. Owning a plant shop isn't exactly clean work.
"Alright, Lucas hurry up bud! We're running early for once let's not squander it." I call after him.
"But I like our mad dashes to the car." Lucas calls back."
"Please."
I hear his sweet giggle and then I see his curly mop of head appear.
"I should probably fix your hair first."
Somehow Lucas and I managed to keep ahead of the time today. I pull into the school parking lot at the perfect time when all the other moms are actually there too. Normally I'm scrambling in with Lucas towed behind me and Mrs. Thunton is the only one left.
"Oh wow everyone is here," Lucas comments as I pull his bag out of the back seat.
"See this is what happens when we're on time. Isn't it cool?"
"Sure." Lucas sounds completely uninterested but I appreciate the effort.
I don't miss the surprised looks of some of the moms as we approach. Yes, I am that guardian who is constantly scrambling, but 90% of them have husbands who help or they've been doing this longer than 9 months.
They can suck it up and stop being so judgey.
"I see Collin!" Lucas exclaims as he yanks his backpack from my hands and bolts to the playground.
He completely ignores his principal Mrs. Thunton as she greets him. I wave to the woman and send her a smile. Now to find Collin's mom.
"Kelly!" I call and the woman glances up from her phone and a smile spreads on her face.
"I was going to wait for you but look at you being on time." She jokes.
"Don't get used to it. Are you still offering to have Lucas over for a sleepover? He and I talked about it and he doesn't seem too anxious about it, he's made a lot of progress and honestly, he absolutely loves playing with Collin."
"Oh my god yes! That's what I waiting for you for. Collin has also been struggling and I think their friendship is such an anchor."
I nod. " I completely agree he's been so amazing to Lucas."
"Oh great, do you want me to just pick him up from school today?"
"I need to get his things together but I will meet you here and see if Lucas wants to ride with you or with me. Driving still makes him a bit nervous I think."
"Completely understand."
I grin. "Thank you so much, Kelly. I will see you at 4:00."
"See you at 4:00!"
Once I'm back in the safety of my car I call Maura. She picks up on the second ring.
"I am free tonight."
"Yes! It's party time bitch!"
What a freaking dork

Main Masterlist ♡ Top Gun Maverick Masterlist ♡ Jake "Hangman" Seresin Masterlist ♡ Still the One Masterlist
Just like all my other stories, this has not been proofread, but please enjoy.
Warnings: Some swearing. Hope you all like it.
Also please don't come at me for not knowing Naval terms or their training. This is just fiction.
Gifs & photos do not belong to me.
Jake "Hangman" Seresin's POV
I haven't seen YN since that first day. Have I been avoiding her? Maybe. Should I atleast try and be friends with her? I don't know.
Knowing she has moved on and with someone else has completely messed with my emotions.
It isn't because it is with another woman, but just for the fact that I know I will never have another chance with her and that is getting to me.
People have noticed how I have been quiet. How I haven't really talked to anyone. I just have to let my emotions run its course.
Tumblr media
"Did you hear that the base is going to be doing a Family Day here?" Bob mentioned as him and Fritz walked past me.
"Yeah. Got told we will all have to be there. No exceptions." Fritz said. My shoulders seemed to have slumped at that.
I hate these things. Just makes me realise even more that I don't have my own family, which my Mom constantly likes to remind me of.
"I am not getting any younger Jakey."
Her voice said in my head. I always joke and tell her that there maybe a few Grandchildren out there that we just don't know about.
That usually gets me a slap upside the head and her telling me that isn't funny.
"Is everyone invited?" I asked. That stopped the two of them.
"What you mean by everyone?" Fritz asked.
"Including the civilian employees?"
"Uh, yeah. They want everyone to be there. I think it is just to show," I zoned him out as I thought of running into YN and this mysterious Alice.
Maybe she won't bring her. Who knows how long the two of them have been together for anyways. Could be a new relationship.
~
As the Family Day event got closer and closer I knew I was royally screwed. The Nurses tent will be right across from us and I will have to look at YN all day long.
I tried to get the event planner to change our spot, but they just put their foot down.
"No. It stays where it is." Was all I got told.
"What is your issue with having the Nurses tent across from us?" Yale asked me the night before.
I wasn't going to tell him the truth, so I came up with some bullshit one. "I just don't want to listen to people throwing up from the heat or children crying because they hurt themselves."
"Oh. I thought it was about that nurse that ran with us that morning." I cleared my throat and informed him that is not the reason at all.
~
Today was finally the day. I woke up and got dressed in my uniform. Anyone who was not participating in the events were to be in uniform.
I joined my peers at our table and waited for the day to start. I can feel the hot California sun beating down on us and I knew it was going to be a very long day.
Tumblr media
YN's POV:
I wasn't going to bring Alice to this but my sister insisted when I told her about it.
"This will be good for her. She has been asking about where you work." Was what I was told.
"I know she has but there will be so many people there." I said to Julia.
My sister just looked at me and didn't say anything. She knew why I was hesitating on bringing Alice.
"He has the right to know. She has the right to know him and just not through stories that you tell her."
"I know you're right but with his job," Julia cut me off.
"No more excuses. Alice has been asking about him and I can't keep distracting her every time she asks."
And that is how I found myself gripping my daughter's hand tightly as we walked onto the base a few hours into the day already starting.
I looked down at her and couldn't help but smile as her mouth was hanging open at the massive ship that was near by.
"Mommy, this is where you work?" She let go of my hang and turned in a circle, trying to take it all in.
"Yes baby. I help everyone who comes through my doors. I'll show you my office another time. Let's go on some rides." I held my hand out to her and she grabbed it.
Now she is practically dragging me to the first ride, the smile never once coming off of her face.
~
The two of us went on ride after ride. Many of them were a first for Alice. I won her a stuffed animal, a purple horse that she hasn't let go since it was placed in her arms.
It has been hours and I could tell that Alice was getting tired as she was walking slower.
"I want to go home Mommy."
"Okay baby, let's go use the washroom first and then we can go." The ride back home wasn't long but I knew she would be asking to go the moment we leave the parking lot.
Tumblr media
Alice's POV:
"Wait here once you are done okay Alice? I have to go too." My Mom said to me and I told her I would and I did.
Until I saw someone walk past me who looked like she had my Mom's hair.
The woman was walking fast and I raced to catch up to her. "Mommy. Mom." I called out wondering why she wasn't looking at me.
She finally stopped and I grabbed her hand. The woman looked down at me and I up at her. I knew I made a mistake.
"I am sorry. I thought you were my Mom." I apologised as I turned to go back the way I came.
But I didn't know which was that was. Everything looked the same. I held my horse to my chest and walked through the crowd of people, looking for my mom.

Jake "Hangman" Seresin's POV
I was walking back to the table with a nice cold drink in my hand when I saw a little girl wondering around by herself.
We got told that if a child is not with their guardian, that we have to take them to the Nurses tent.
I calmly walked up to her and got down so I was at eye level with her. She looks kind of familiar and I couldn't place who she looked like.
"Are you okay? Did you lose your Mom or Dad?" I said to her in a soft voice. She was still crying.
"My Mom." Came her reply.
"Let's go and find your Mom. My name is Jake." I held out my hand to her.
"Jake? My Dad's name is Jake?"
I smiled at that. "Well, let's go and find them shall we? I just have to take you to that tent right over there?" I pointed to where I would be taking her.
I stood up and she took my hand. The other one was still clutching the purple horse to her chest.
The tears have stopped falling and now there were little sniffles coming from her.
"Got a lost one here." I called out when we entered the tent.
"Alice?"
The child and I turned around at the sound of her name. She dropped my hand and I watched as she ran into YN's arms who was kissing her and telling her how worried she was.
"So this is Alice?" I said before I even realised I asked.
YN looked up at me and then back down at Alice. She nodded her head yes. I looked down at the little girl I just helped find her mom.
And then it clicked.
"Jake? My Dad's name is Jake?"

Hotshot- J. Seresin
pairing: J. "Hangman" Seresin x pilot female!reader (callsign: Hotshot) word count: 3.8k warnings: SMUT, PIV, dumbifcation, unprotected sex, hair pulling, spanking, public sex based on this request (i apologize in advance, i had to change it up a bit to fit the idea. so sorry, but still hope you like it!)
Tumblr media
Hangman knew the rule. Hell, the rule had been established because of him. No fraternizing with other top gun cadets. It made for messy times while flying through the sky. Too many feelings were involved as they argued about who slept with who and who did what with who and who didn’t text who back. There was no room for all of that when they were flying at supersonic speed and fighting for their lives. Some of the pilots found it dumb, when they sat in the briefing talking about the new rules and regulations.
One of them in particular was Y/N Y/L/N, call sign Hotshot. She didn’t think it was necessary to have to sit in a class about fraternizing and safe sex when the one person the class was directed at was sleeping. She hated Jake Hangman Seresin. She hated everything about him. And He hated her.
Both of them had been born to Top Gun graduates, and the rivalry between them had started from birth. Their dads had gone back and forth fighting for who was top of the class (ultimately it was Y/N’s dad), and the fight spewed over into Y/N and Jake. Y/N had a lot to prove during her year at Top Gun, she was one of only five females in the program. By the time graduation rolled around, she was one of two (the other being Phoenix).
She didn’t have time to worry about feelings or sex when she was fighting to be one of the best. Hangman had tried to get to her, flashing that ridiculous smile, or taking his shirt off when it wasn’t necessary, or buying her a drink. But she wouldn’t budge. She had earned her nickname when in one of her dogfights with Hangman, she had pulled a cobra move, and flipped over him to take him down. Hangman hated it, and she never let him live it down.
Hangman had thought when they graduated Top Gun that would be the last time he saw Hotshot, until he got called back. The hard deck was the last place he’d ever thought he’d see her. But the second she walked in with Rooster, he felt his mood sour. She looked great, and he hated to admit it. The shorts on her body showed off her tan legs and the tank top on her body showed off her toned arms. Hangman clenched his jaw as she walked towards them, gaining the attention of the other male counterparts.
“Guess they just let anybody back,” Hangman said.
“Clearly, you’re here,” She fired back as she greeted the group.
“Where have you been?” Phoenix said, hugging her friend.
“Here, there, everywhere. When you graduate top of the class,” Y/N said, looking over at Hangman, “You get to pick where you want to be.”
“And yet you chose to stay here, in fighter town,” Hangman smirked, “You finally let a man into that cold dead thing between your legs?”
“You finally treat that raging case of chlamydia?”
Hangman rolled his eyes as the group broke out in cheers for the comeback. Everyone crowded around Y/N, leaving Hangman to seethe in his spot, glaring at her. She had a way of getting under his skin and making him irritated. He knew better than to let a rival bother him this much, but there was just something about her that he couldn’t shake. Normally, if it was a male counterpart he would just box them or go in rounds until they couldn’t offend each other anymore. But with Y/N he always stopped himself from saying anything too far. He did respect her, he would never admit it out loud, but he did.
“I see you and Bradshaw came together…” Phoenix looked over at the brown haired man. Y/N rolled her eyes. Ever since Top Gun, Rooster and Hotshot had been friends. They bonded over the shared trauma of losing a parent in the service, only thing was, Hotshot was old enough to vividly remember that day and Rooster was not, “Oh come on! Four years and nothing!?“
“Zilch.” Hotshot answered.
“It’s cause Rooster’s too pussy and Hotshot’s too bitchy,” Hangman added in, “Ya know what… Hotshot’s probably still a virgin.”
“Why are you so obsessed with my sex life? Is yours so boring that you have to fantasize about mine?” Y/N asked him, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Sorry babe, not my type,” Hangman smirked and took the pool stick from Bob, “But i’m sure i can make arrangements if you need to let off a lil steam, cause I’m good, Hotshot,” He spoke lowly as he lined up his shot, and without breaking eye contact sunk in the pool ball, “Very good.”
“I think i just vomited in my mouth,” Y/N responded and walked away from Hangman, leaving him to get teased by the other males. Hangman clenched his jaw, his eyes following her as she disappeared and saddled right up next to Rooster on the piano bench.
— — —
Hangman was pissed as he walked on the tarmac. His body felt hot, and it didn’t help that the hot California sun was beating down on him as he marched up to where Hotshot was climbing down from her plane. Phoenix gave her a high five and congratulated her on being the first in their class to actually defeat Maverick in the dogfight. Hangman unbuckled his helmet and threw it, making Hotshot jump in surprise.
“What the hell was that!?” He yelled, the muscles in his neck straining, “You fucking left me!”
“It’s called a dogfight, Bagman, don’t you know how this shit works?” Y/N said, taking off her own helmet.
“You left me fucking hanging!” Hangman had been pissed the second that Maverick broke through them, flying side by side. Hangman was shouting different orders on which way to go, not even bothering to check and see if Hotshot was following. He had checked over his left when Maverick had done a cobra move over him, and at the same time, Hotshot got behind them to shoot both of them down.
“Sounds familiar. . .”
“You fucking bitch,” Hangman seethed and squared up next to her. Their bodies were so close they could feel each other’s breaths. Y/N had to look up slightly as Hangman towered over her, “This is the reason you’re alone and you're dried up. No one that fucking fiance of yours cheated-”
“Enough!” Phoenix yelled, stepping in between the two, “You guys have been nonstop with this petty shit the whole time! It’s fucking annoying. Get over yourselves.”
Y/N scoffed and turned away, walking towards the hangar. Hangman grinded his back teeth as he watched her walk. Bob gingerly held Hangman’s helmet towards him and Hangman rolled his eyes, snatching it back from him.
“Are they ever going to stop?” Bob asked. Their petty fights had been happening all week and everyone was growing tired of it. It was worse in the classroom when they’d go sit after a dogfight or pathway run and Maverick would ask what they did wrong to get the other one or their team killed. They both had a hard time admitting defeat.
“No,” Phoenix said, shaking her head and walking in the same direction of Y/N.
— — —
The hard deck was packed when Hotshot, Phoenix and Bob walked in. Phoenix walked right to the bar ordering her and Hotshot drinks, while Bob made his way to the pool table, spotting Rooster and Fanboy. Phoenix knew exactly what Hotshot needed, ordering them both three shots of vodka each. Hotshot didn’t hesitate as she threw them back in a row and then sucked on the lime Penny had given her.
“Fuck I needed that,” She said, closing her eyes at the bitter taste of the lime, “Where the fuck does Hangman get off thinking he can say shit like that? Bringing up my douche bag of a fiancé.”
“Ex!” Phoenix said, taking a sip of the beer she ordered, “Ex fiancé, meaning you are single, meaning. . . we are getting you laid tonight.”
“What? No, no no no,” Y/N shook her head, “You know the rule!”
“The rule is no banging each other, and it’s not even an actual rule,”
“Just frowned upon,”
“Exactly!” Phoenix exclaimed, “Why not him?”
Y/N looked where Phoenix was pointing, a tall handsome man with brown curly hair, and perfectly sun kissed tan skin. He had a nice smile, Hotshot could give him that, his arms looked toned as he laughed with some of his buddies. Y/N shrugged, she needed the release. She had tried to get herself off but no matter what she did or used or watched, she couldn’t bring herself to the tipping point and it was driving her crazy. It didn’t help that she was sexually frustrated and was constantly fighting with Hangman.
It made her blood boil when he’d even open his mouth and start talking or the simple smirk he’d give her with that stupid toothpick between his perfectly white teeth. Hotshot let out a huff, and grabbed her beer, clinking it with Phoenix’s before walking over to the group. Phoenix bit back a smile as she watched her friend walk over and the guy’s eyes light up. Lt Trace wasn’t the only person who noticed Lt Y/L/N walk over to the group of civilian men.
“Damn, get it Hotshot,” Rooster smirked, watching as she stood in front of the brunette man, him placing his hands on her hip as he guided her hand to throw a dart.
“She can’t throw darts on her own?” Hangman rolled his eyes.
“She’s trying to get laid, lighten up,” Phoenix said, joining the group.
“With him!? What is he? Seventeen?” Hangman said, pointing at the guy.
“Are you jealous?”
“Oh Hotshot? Fuck no, I could bang any woman in this bar-“
As soon as the words left his mouth, the bell across the bar rang. Hangman rolled his eyes as the bar cheered and Penny pointed at him. Hangman kept his mouth shut for the most part the rest of the night, but decided to fight fire with fire and choose a girl of his own to try and sweet talk into being brought home.
Y/N looked over at the group and found Hangman chatting up a girl, giving her that panty dropping smile of his and Hotshot rolled her eyes. She grabbed the guy’s hand, who’s name she found out was Tony, and moved it from his lap so she could stake her claim. Tony smirked, loving the idea of having her pretty self sitting on his lap. Hangman clenched his jaw and pulled the girl he was talking to in between his legs as he sat on a barstool, waiting for his turn in pool.
Hangman had enough the second he saw Tony starting to place kisses on Y/N’s neck and move his hand up her bare thigh. Before he could even really think, he pushed the girl away between his legs and walked over to Y/N. He didn’t even say anything as he grabbed her arm and lifted her away from Tony. Tony stood up to protest, but Hangman gave him a look and Tony sat back down in his seat, knowing better than to try and fight the angry pilot. Y/N tried to rip her arm away, which only made Hangman tighten his grip as he dragged her to the closest bathroom.
“What the fuck,” Hotshot yelled, ripping her arm away. She hardly had time to think, as Hangman slammed her up against the closed door, being chest to chest with her. Their chests fell in sync.
“Do you think it’s okay to just. . . slut it up out there?”
“Me? Slutting it up? How about you and that poor girl who probably confuses her left and-“
“Says the one who was sitting on a man’s lap, basically letting him finger you in a crowded bar,” Hotshot was almost too aware of the way Hangman’s hand skidded along the bottom hem of her dress, “I bet you’d like that, having all eyes on you, that’s why they call you Hotshot.” She clenched her jaw as Hangman dropped his head to speak into her ear. He ghosted his lips on her jaw, making her tilt her head back giving him more access to her neck, “About to give in so fucking easily. God you must really need it.”
“I can go ask Rooster if you won’t. He’d be willing, or maybe even Coyote, or better yet Bob-“
Her words were cut off by Hangman smashing his lips against hers. There was nothing soft about the kissing, it was hot and bruising, as she tangled her fingers in his perfect blonde locks. His hands trailed to the back of her thighs, tapping on them, signaling for her to jump. Her legs wrapped perfectly around his toned torso as he walked them over to the counter. He set her down and his lips went to her jaw and trailed down her neck, sucking and kissing lightly.
“God, you’re such a bitch,” He mumbled against her skin.
“You’re an ass,” She said, pulling on his blond hair, making him look up at her, “I fucking hate you.”
“Likewise,” Hangman smirked and kissed her again. His fingers trailed under her skirt, which had ridden up her tan thighs. Goosebumps rose on her skin as he lazily dragged his middle finger over her clothed slit, “But I make you wet don’t you. Your little pussy is just begging for someone to touch it.” He said in her ear, his breath hot as she arched her back at the feeling. Her nipples were straining through the thin bra she wore underneath her tank top.
“Don’t flatter yourself, I could go home and fix this problem myself,” She said.
“Nothing can ever make you feel as good as I can, babe,” Hangman said, and pushed her panties to the side, his middle finger coming in contact with her clit. She let out a shaky moan at the feeling, and fisted his shirt in her hands, “God now this is a fucking site,” With his free hand, he pushed her skit up, putting her on display, as he ran his finger through her glistening folds, “Look at you, all quiet for once. Tell me what you want,”
“I’ll kill you,” Y/N said breathlessly as Hangman’s finger tapped at her entrance. She shamelessly clenched at the feeling. She closed her eyes; was she really going to beg for this? Pushing her pride aside she opened her eyes and looked at him, “Touch me.”
Hangman smirked and pushed his finger into her. She let out a moan, dropping her head back at the sensation, a slight burn at being stretched out. She hadn’t had anything more than her own fingers in so long, that she felt her walls being stretched. He started slowly, and watched her face as he moved his digit in and out of her. She closed her eyes, her hands on his shoulders, her jaw open in complete bliss, soft moans leaving her pink lips. It was a sight to see, and Hangman wished he could take a picture.
“Fuck, you’re so tight,” Hangman moaned, feeling the blood rush to his already hard cock, “Fuck I bet you taste sweet.” He moved his finger in and out, making sure to curl against that sweet spot that had her curling her toes.
“Why don’t you put your mouth to good use then,”
“Another day, sweetheart, right now, I wanna be inside you.” Hangman said, taking his hand away from her. She whined at the loss of the feeling and Hangman chuckled, “You whining?”
“It’s not too late for me to go ask Rooster,”
“Yeah, no,” Hangman said, and grabbed her body off the counter, and spun her around. He hiked her skirt up enough that her ass was on display. He grabbed the flimsy thong she was wearing and pulled it down her legs. He put them in his pocket and then grabbed her ass, giving it a squeeze before laying a harsh smack to the skin.
“Fuck!” Y/N moaned, and looked over her shoulder at him, “Again.”
“Kinky,” He smirked and laid another smack to the skin. She moaned, rolling her eyes back, “If this was what I needed to do to shut you up, I would’ve done it years ago,” He said as he undid his belt, and pulled his pants down enough to get his cock out. Y/N looked down, and felt herself clench at the sight of his cock. It was perfectly hard as it rested against his stomach, the tip red and leaking, “You like it, this what you want? If I give you my cock, will you stop being a bitch?”
“No fucking promises,” Y/N said, and pushed her ass back towards him, “Fuck me, or I’ll leave.”
“Shut up,” Hangman groaned, fisting his cock. Y/N shuddered at the feeling as he took his cock and rubbed over her folds, spreading the slick wetness from her cunt around. He lined himself, pushing in her slowly. She closed her eyes at the slight sting of pain as he placed one hand on the counter and the other on her hip. Her pussy took him completely in, as he pushed in and bottomed out, his hips flush with her ass. He began to pull back slightly, feeling her clench around him.
“Don’t-” She said, letting out a shaky breath, “Just-”
“If I don’t move, I’m going to cum,”
“Already?” She smirked looking at him in the mirror.
“Shut up. Your pussy is like heaven. Warm, tight, squeezing me,” His voice seemed to have dropped an octave as he very carefully pulled his hips back and thrusted into her. The moan that left her lips was almost pornographic as she dropped her head forward.
“God, fuck me,” She moaned.
“Don’t gotta tell me twice,” Hangman said and sped up his thrusts.
The feeling was almost too much, as Jake’s cock brushed that spot over and over again. The slight stinging pain she felt moments before had faded away and all she felt was pure pleasure. The hand Jake had on the counter had found its way to her hair, tangling itself in it and pulling. She gasped at the feeling of both pain and pleasure as Jake’s hips went at a relentless speed. His thrusts were fast and deep, the soft pants and curse words leaving his lips.
“Fuck,” He cursed, pulling out of her completely. He turned her around once again so she was facing him, and set her on the edge of the counter, and slipped back into her, “Oh god, you feel so fucking good.”
Y/N wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him closer. He thrusted deep into her, and it felt like he was grazing her cervix. He smirked as she dropped her head onto his shoulder and thrusted deep and hard again. He could feel her pussy clench around him, and grabbed her hair, pulling her head back.
“You like when I do this,” Jake said, thrusting deep again. The only thing she could muster up was a nod, her senses being completely taken over by pleasure, “Look at you, so cock dumb you can’t even use your words.” He picked up his pace, hitting the same spot over and over, deep and hard.
Y/N let out something short of a scream as she fisted locks of his blonde hair in her hands. He took one hand and brought it down between their bodies, his thumb finding her clit and rubbing at it softly. The most beautiful sound left her lips as she closed her eyes, seeing white spots in her vision. Jake could feel her starting to let go and grabbed her throat.
“Ask,” He said, his lips barely touching hers.
“Please-”
“Please what?”
“Can I cum, please oh, fuck please.”
Jake smirked, “You’re such a cockslut, yes you can cum.”
Y/N’s body convulsed as Jake held her and continued to fuck her through her orgasm. The waves of pleasure that rolled through her body was enough to make her lose all sense of thought that she had. Her mind was blank except for the feeling of his cock against her g-spot. The sight of her orgasm, watching her soul basically leave her body was enough to bring Jake to the tipping point. He pulled his hips back to pull out, but Y/N shook her head, wrapping her legs around his waist.
“In me. . . please,” She panted out and Jake nodded, thrusting as deep as he possibly could. They both moaned at the feeling as Jake released himself, shooting white hot cum into her. Jake milked his orgasm and Y/N moaned at the overstimulation. Jake stopped and leaned his head against her shoulder, completely spent. He took a couple seconds to catch his breath before lifting his head up to look at her.
“Your place or mine?”
“Mine,” Y/N said and Jake nodded.
“I’m gonna pull out,” Jake said and Y/N nodded. He grabbed her hips and pulled out, he let out a curse at the way she once again clenched around him, “God it was like your pussy was made for me.” He fixed himself back into his jeans and zipped them up.
“Shut up,” Y/N said, “Hand me my underwear.”
“You mean. . . these,” Hangman smirked, holding up her thong.
“Yes,” Y/N reached out to snatch them back but Hangman moved his hand quickly. Her jaw dropped in complete shock as Hangman brought them to his nose and sniffed them, “You sick fuck. . .”
“Says the one about to walk out with my cum running down her leg.” Hangman smirked, “Hurry up, I’ll meet you in the car.” He kissed her cheek, before opening the door and quickly leaving her to do her thing.
Y/N, very carefully jumped off the counter, hoping to not drip cum on the ground and rushed to the toilet to pee. Once she was done and cleaned herself up and washed her hands, she walked back out to the busy bar and over to her friends. Phoenix had a smirk on her face that Hotshot wanted so badly to smack off her face.
“I’m leaving,” Hotshot said, grabbing her purse.
“I bet you are, and lemme guess,” Phoenix said and whispered in your ear, “Hangman has your underwear.” Y/N’s eyes widened, “Walked over here saying he was leaving, turned around and had a bright red thong hanging out of his back pocket.”
“I’m going to kill him,” Y/N seethed and walked towards the door.
“Use protection!” Phoenix yelled after her, earning herself the finger. She laughed and sat back down on her barstool, “You fuckers owe me, pay up!” The boys groaned as they fished their wallets out of their pockets and paid Phoenix for the bet they placed.

congratulations kait!! this celebration is SO cute! i am gonna request ☕️ + “You look stupid as all hell right now.” + hangman !!! thank you loveyyyy
lola my dear my love thank you!!! love you <3
jake "hangman" seresin x reader, 1.4k, slightly suggestive towards the end, join the celebration!
“Babe, do you know where the box of kitchen plates is?”
It was something straight out of your dreams, finally moving in with the love of your life. You’d been dating Jake Seresin for two years and finally made that leap, the last of your boxes making their way to your new home safely today. There was a lot coming from your apartment and his, but everything would find its place here.
You could’ve had nothing and still be just as happy, because you still had Jake, and that was really all you needed.
Except for he wasn’t answering you right now, and you really wanted to find the plates. So you went looking for him, calling his name every few seconds until you reached your bedroom. You found him alright, you definitely weren’t prepared for the sight you were met with.
He was wearing a sweater of yours, definitely way too small for his broad frame judging from the way it cut off above his belly button. It was tight in the shoulders too, and you’d be a bit more annoyed at him stretching it out if you weren't so in love with him. He was grinning guiltily at you, hands propped up on his hips as he stood in the middle of a pile of your clothes.
“I was gonna put all your stuff in the closet for you so you didn’t have to.” He said sheepishly, gesturing vaguely at the mess around him. “...Surprise?”
You couldn’t help but smile fondly at him, so big your cheeks ached. “You look stupid as all hell right now.”
“I think you mean stupid handsome,” He scoffed, arching a brow at you.
“No, I meant what I said. What made you think you could fit into that, honey?” You chided playfully, crossing the room to get a better look at him. It was an older sweater of yours, a bit frayed at the sleeves from how often you’d worn it over the years you’d had it, but still soft and even cozier now that it had been worn in.
“You were wearin’ this sweater the first time we met, d’you remember?”
Of course you remembered. You remembered it like it was yesterday, even though it had been almost three years ago.
You were grabbing a little pick me up before work at your usual coffee place one morning, and you spotted it on the pickup counter, the same thing you always got. Another hand reached for the plastic cup at the same time, long fingers curling around yours for a moment before jerking back like they’d been burned.
The problem was, your gut instinct was to retreat as well, leaving the cup of coffee to tip over on the counter. The lid popped off, and suddenly your sleeve was cold and wet and smelled like…well, coffee.
“Shit!” You hissed, shaking it out as best you could. “What the hell?”
“Oh fuck—” You looked up, and the most handsome man you’d ever laid eyes on was staring right back at you, blond hair swept up and out of his face, pretty green eyes widened in something akin to horror. “I am so sorry, I thought it was mine, I didn’t—are you alright?”
You should’ve been angry—or annoyed at the very least, because now your favorite sweater was stained and you’d probably never be able to get it out—but you weren’t. All you could think about other than your sopping wet sleeve was that his guy was clearly concerned about you.
Maybe he took your silence as a not-so-great one, because he forced out a chuckle. “On the bright side, at least it was iced coffee.” He was trying to make light of the situation as he grabbed a wad of napkins from the dispenser, thrusting it out towards you clumsily. You thought it was actually kind of cute.
An amused laugh bubbled out of you, and you shrugged, nodding. “There’s the silver lining.”
“I’m Hangman—Jake, I mean. My name’s Jake. Seresin. Hangman’s my callsign, s’force of habit.”
“Callsign? You Air Force or something?”
“Navy, actually, and I’ll try not to be too offended by that.”
“Air Force, Navy—aren’t they pretty much the same?”
“Okay, ouch.” Jake faux winced, squeezing his eyes shut before opening them again to see you were just messing with him. Then he smiled, shaking his head. “Maybe I could buy you another coffee, make up for the one that spilled? We could talk. I could tell you the difference between the two.”
“Why not make it up now? We’re both still here.” You were taking a bolder approach than you usually did when it came to people you found attractive, but something had come over you with Jake. Even though he was a complete and total stranger, you felt surprisingly at ease with him.
Jake perked up at that, lips curving into a smile, but then he checked his watch. He grimaced. “I’m actually late for work right now, I’m so—can we raincheck? I promise I’m not tryin’ to get out of anythin’, my captain’ll have my behind if I’m not on the tarmac ready to go in ten.”
“Ten minutes? Well what the hell are you still doing here? Go!”
He grinned at you one more time before moving to hurry out the door, but didn’t get more than a few feet away when he skidded to a stop, turning on his heel to face you again. “Wait, I didn’t get your name!”
“Guess you’ll just have to meet me back here again. Saturday, noon. Don’t be late.” You winked at him and he gave you a mock salute before dashing out the door, leaving you thinking about him the rest of the day, and until you had the privilege of seeing him next.
It took Jake almost a year to ask you out after you met up that Saturday, wallowing in what he thought was the friend zone for the longest time until the two of you managed to get your heads out of your asses and see what you were missing. And it was actually you who told him you liked him first, murmuring it in his ear at a summer bonfire with your friends, but it was him who kissed you first—right after you told him you liked him.
“Yeah, I remember.” You said softly, fingers trailing down the sleeve to the faint brown stain in the soft wool where the coffee had spilled. Jake’s arms slid around you, though a little stiffly given his constraints. “Look at us now.”
“Look at us indeed. Havin’ our own place, putin’ down roots. Seems pretty crazy, doesn’t it?” He murmured, giving your waist a loving squeeze. You did the same around his shoulders, tilting your chin up for a kiss that Jake gladly gave you.
Jake always kissed you like he did everything in life—confidently and well. They still had you reeling in the moments after even now, even though he’d kissed you about a thousand times in the time you’d been together—probably more.
This one was no different, but something about it felt sweeter. Like he was less worried about winning, because he’d already won it all. Because he had you, because you had a home together. Because now you could start the rest of your lives with each other in this home. You could almost hear him saying something about having the best prize of them all.
“Now take off my sweater. Your big man shoulders are stretching it out.” You said, patting him firmly on the chest a few times.
Jake gasped, slapping an appalled hand over his chest. “Is this your way of tryin’ to get me out of my clothes? In the middle of the day? You tease!”
“We’ve still got a whole house to unpack, so no, I’m not trying to get you out of anything. Except my sweater, so if you would be so kind?”
“You could at least pretend to want me once in a while, y’know.” He sighed dramatically, letting his head hang. That was Jake, ever the drama queen out of the two of you.
You lifted his chin with two fingers, fixing him to the spot with a look. “I’m sorry, was this morning not enough for you? What was it—one, two, three—”
“Okay, okay, fine! You were yellin’ somethin’ about kitchen plates earlier? Let’s get the damn thing done so we can have more time for this morning’s activities.”
“I swear, that’s all your dude brain thinks about—take off my sweater, damnit!”

I’m sorry, but I HAVE to ask bc my brain is itching for an answer.
How does our sweet reader tell fly!boy Jake she’s expecting for the first time?
i thought about this for a good part of my day, and here is where i ended up with for our flyboy babies.
So when you both started trying, you both didn’t think too much about it. Sure you both really wanted kids, but it was something you both didn’t want to obsess over - adopting the it will come when it is time attitude.
Let’s say its the summer when everyone starts to notice and you are both back in Texas with family for a couple of weeks.
It’s Grandma Doris’ pets that notice first - the dogs, the cats - they start to stick to you like glue. Lying by your side, never wandering too far from you. And oh, with the number of children and grandchildren she has combined - Grandma Doris knows. But she says nothing.
Your mother and Grace have a sneaking suspicion - they see it in the way your hair starts to shine, and the way you tire more easily (which you attribute to the summer heat). It’s all not really signs, and way too early to tell - but mothers always know.
You don’t think too much of it, until one morning when you wake up, sick to your stomach. You run off towards the bathroom and Jake returns from his morning run, shirtless and sweaty to find you sitting on the floor of the bathroom, face pale from throwing up. It worries the living daylights out of him so imagine when you try to stand and pass out. Jake catches you instantly because he was helping you stand, but it is madness after that (which you don’t witness being passed out and all).
You get rushed to the emergency room, and when you come to you are in a hospital bed, with Jake sitting bedside on a chair, just watching you.
“What…” You are of course, a little disorientated. Jake’s chair is already so close to your bed he doesn’t have to move to you. All he does is reaches over - taking one of your hands in his, and reaching other reaching out to cup the side of your face.
He waits for you to ground yourself completely in the present, long enough for you to notice he is still in his running shorts, but now with a tshirt on.
“You’re pregnant,” he says, quietly, but clearly while looking directly into your eyes. He watches the emotions ripple across your face - shock, thought, before settling on a soft smile, tears welling up in the corner of your eyes.
Jake meets your smile with a beatific grin of his own as he reaches up with a thumb to catch one of your happy tears.
“I hope she has your eyes” you say.
“She?”
“Just a hunch.”

Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin x F!Reader
summary: jake is obsessed with you. you eat it up. you’re obsessed with his obsession. but also with him.
t/w: soft!jake, some cursing
"Get out of here, Bagman. You're giving me a headache."
The blonde aviator grabs at his chest. "God, I love it when you're mean to me." Those green eyes sparkle with mischief under the lights of the Hard Deck.
Jake 'Hangman' Seresin has been pining after you for months.
& you have been loving every second of it. Miramar's resident playboy has only had eyes for you. You haven't seen him spare a glance at any of the other ladies in the bar.
Believe me, they've been looking at him.
"Y/n, how long are you going to keep my boy at arm's length?" Coyote asks from the other side of the pool table. Jake saddles up next to him and feeds you the saddest pout he can muster.
"Yeah, y/n, how long?" Jake asks.
Your intention wasn't to drag this hard-to-get play out for so long. Truthfully, it's becoming hard not to give in to those strong arms. To not lean in when he invades your personal space, feeding you a smart ass comment.
Your shoulder comes up to your ear and falls back down. "Hard to say, Bagman."
"Let's play for it," he tells you. Jake saunters over to you, and leans against the pool table. Crossing his arms over his fit chest, he situates his mouth just outside your ear. "If I win, you've gotta give me a kiss, darlin'."
The way his hot breath falls across your ear causes goosebumps to appear down your arms. Jake notices, and a blonde brow raises.
"What are you? Twelve?" you antagonize.
"Oh, honey. I'm willing to try anything at this point."
"Rack 'em. Honey." You lightly shove him back, your hands reacting to the small second they were on his chest.
"If I win, you give it up," you send the man a sad look.
"Give what up?" he asks.
"All this pining'." Your hand gestures wildly around in the air.
For a moment, despair crosses over that handsome face. He recovers quickly. "Oh, I'm not worried."
Jake lets you break. Two stripes fall into the pocket. Jake comes up behind you before your next shot. His hand slides across your waist and he pulls you into his side.
Right as you pull back, Jake leans down. "Don't scratch."
The cueball follows your striped ball into the pocket.
"Damn," he murmurs. It takes a full 45 seconds to get your heart rate under control.
The jig is up once Jake get in control of the pool table. Not only is he the dagger squad's best dart player, he's got the best pool table on lock, too. There is no way he's going to take it easy on you.
Naturally, he doesn't.
"One more and Hangman gets a kiss," he smirks. He doesn't take his eyes off your as he pulls back and send the cue ball sailing.
The eight ball falls into it's intended pocket effortlessly. Followed right by the cue ball.
Shock falls across all your faces. Jake has never lost a game of pool. Ever.
Jake sets the cue stick down, and rounds the table. Standing toe-to-toe with you, he feeds you a delicious smirk.
"Darlin', I ain't gonna make you kiss me if you don't want to. Furthermore, I only want your kiss if its of your own volition." He tucks a strand of stray hair behind your ear.
Your eyes lock with his and the world stops. What a fucking gentleman.
Fisting the front of his shirt, you yank him down to your mouth. Jake relaxes into the kiss immediately and allows his hands to slide around your waist.
Jake takes control, changing the direction and deepening the kiss. Your hands move from his shirt to the nap of his neck, fingers knotting in his hair. His hair that’s gotten just a bit long.
Jake pulls back just a hair, his lips a breath away from yours. “Damn,” he mumbles, again.
“My own volition, huh?”
“I’m nothing if not a gentleman,” he winks. “A gentleman who is dying to kiss you again.”
You guide his lips back to yours.
“Kiss me, Hangman.”

Sneak Peek | Hangman x Reader
Summary: You spent so much time around the boys, they counted you as one of them. You were firmly stuck in the friend zone with Jake, so it was time to move on with a guy who could see past your flight suits. It's not immediately obvious to either of you that cranky Jake is actually jealous Jake.
Warnings: Fluff, language, mentioned smut, 18+
Length: 6000 words
Pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Female Reader
Happy birthday @beyondthesefourwalls!

"It's my turn to buy a round," you said, standing up from the table and grabbing the empty beer bottles before turning toward Jimmy and Penny at the bar.
"Thanks, Rodeo," Jake murmured, and you turned back briefly and smiled softly at him. His gaze slid down your body the same way it would with any other woman, the only difference was that he had started to notice just how many other guys were regularly checking you out, too. And he wasn't sure how he felt about that fact.
When you squeezed yourself between two stools at the bar to order four more beers, Bradley asked, "Who are you staring at, Hangman? Rodeo?"
Mickey laughed as Jake quickly shook his head and turned his attention back to his friends. "I just wanted to make sure she can manage carrying everything."
"I'm sure she's fine," Bradley replied with a laugh of his own. "I got a little nervous for a second there."
"Why?" Jake asked, his eyes slowly drifting back to you, watching as you slipped your credit card into the back pocket of your jeans.
"Because first of all," Bradley said as he smashed open a peanut on the table, "Rodeo is practically one of the guys. And second," he added, popping the peanut into his mouth and chewing, "it would be weird if you start looking at her like you do all the other random pieces of ass you take home with you. Even though she is cute."
"She's cute, for sure," Mickey piped in. "But once you've seen a girl throw up in the parking lot after a drunken karaoke night, the appeal kind of wears off."
Jake smiled as you headed back toward the table, because the drunken karaoke night was when he got to drive you home and carry you to your bed while you repeatedly tried to tell him you could walk by yourself.
"Oh, you know who else is cute?" Bradley asked just as you set four new beers on the table. "That redhead with the huge tits at the dartboard."
"Damn," Mickey groaned, and now you were looking in that direction, too. But Jake kept his eyes on you.
"Do we have to talk about this in front of Rodeo?" he asked, sipping his fresh beer and starting to wish Bradley and Mickey would wander off. "In front of a lady?"
Bradley snorted so hard, Jake was surprised his beer didn't shoot out of his nose. "A lady?" he asked as he looked at you and cuffed you on the arm. "Nice try, Hangman, but Rodeo doesn't count."
"Well, you don't count either," you told him, and Bradley tapped the neck of his bottle to yours. "And neither do the two of you." Your gaze met Mickey's before settling on Jake. "You know I don't mind when you guys talk about girls. I get it. You're all hot."
But your knee was rubbing against Jake's thigh at the tiny table, and for a brief flash, he thought maybe he wanted to count in your mind as a guy you could be into.
--------------------------
It was a strange dynamic, working with mostly a bunch of men all the time. They saw you in a flight suit once, and they never looked at you like you were a female ever again. And that was fine. It made your job easier in a lot of ways. There were fewer distractions, and you knew for a fact that they liked you for your personality. They wouldn't invite you to hang out all the time if they didn't.
But on nights like this, it did sting a little bit to watch the three of them tripping over themselves to go talk to the redhead who was clearly eating up the attention. You were essentially wearing the same outfit she was: jeans and a black shirt. And you thought you looked cute. And what exactly was wrong with your boobs? You looked down at your body and kind of shrugged. You didn't get it.
Natasha handed you a pool cue, and you sank a shot. You made up the excuse that you wanted to play so the guys wouldn't feel bad about abandoning you to go talk to girls, but Jake had been hesitant at first, so you shoved him along. That was a mistake, because you were reminded of how solid and muscular he was under his soft shirt.
The first few times you glanced his way, he was already looking back at you. If he were any other guy, you would have just asked him out by now, but you were so firmly in the friend zone with all of them that it was embarrassing. The rejection would be laughable.
So you put your head down and focused on the game and the chit chat around you. But after a while you got curious, and when you looked up again, Bradley and Mickey were walking back toward the table where your empty beer bottle sat. Jake had won. The redhead was running her fingernails through his hair. It was all over for the night.
You weren't jealous. You weren't. You just didn't understand why it couldn't be you. As you sank the eight ball, you said, "I'm beat. I'm going to head home."
"Me too. Want a lift?" Mickey asked, and you nodded, not sparing a single glance back at Jake.
Maybe you were the problem. Maybe you weren't sexy. You spent most of Sunday scrutinizing yourself in your bedroom mirror and going through all of your clothing. There really wasn't much of it since your closet was lined with uniforms and flight suits. And when you looked in the mirror, it wasn't like you could even tell what the problem was. You were just you, but it was starting to feel like you'd been playing around in this male-dominated world for so long, you were just blending in there.
"Fuck it," you muttered reaching for your phone. There was a text from Bradley detailing the pricing for tickets to a Padres game, which you desperately wanted to go to. It sounded fun. Then you realized the beer drinking and peanut eating would simply be moved to a different venue in which the guys would be looking at all the other women around you. Suddenly it didn't sound so fun.
There were also a handful of texts from Jake. He must have kicked his guest out early if he was asking how you were doing this morning. You sent back a short message before finding the app on your screen that had been dormant since you got stationed in San Diego last summer. Tinder. It was right there.
Nervously, you entered your login information, terrified that you'd just end up with a bunch of guys you saw on base as your best options. They would undoubtedly take one look at you and have the same reaction your male friends did. But you spent the rest of the day thinking about it. You looked, but you didn't sample. You found some guys who were surprisingly not in the Navy, but you didn't swipe. And maybe part of the reason you didn't was because Jake kept texting you all day long.
Monday was your tipping point. You were all ready to fly in your boots and flight suit when you ended up surrounded by the guys in the hangar. "We getting Padres tickets, Rodeo?" Bradley asked. "Day drinking at Petco Park?"
You nodded at him. "Sounds fun."
Then Mickey cut in as Jake walked over. "Hey, Hangman. How was our little redheaded friend?" he asked with a smirk, but Jake's expression stayed the same as his eyes met yours.
"Wouldn't know."
"Oof," Bradley said with a goading laugh. "What, you kicked her out without even talking to her afterwards?"
You swallowed and looked down at your boots as you thought about the guys on the dating app. Maybe a little change of scenery wouldn't hurt anything after all.
-----------------------------
"Can you just knock it the fuck off?" Jake snapped. "I didn't even spend the night with her." He watched you put your helmet on as you walked toward your jet. "And I don't like talking about this shit around Rodeo anymore."
"Alright," Bradley replied with a tiny smirk. "No need to get mad about it."
When Jake took to the air, you were all business, as usual. You and he flew well together, like you always did. But back on the ground at lunchtime, you barely spared a glance in his direction in the cafeteria. Instead, you were completely absorbed in something on your phone as you picked at your food.
"What's wrong?" he eventually asked, and you looked up at him like you were surprised he was still there.
"Nothing," you murmured, taking a drink before returning your attention to your phone. "Just working on something."
"On what?" he asked, voice almost as snippy as it had been earlier. He found he didn't like it when your attention wasn't focused on him, which was absolutely infuriating, because it's not like the two of you were anything.
"My Tinder profile," you replied smoothly as you licked your lips, and Jake thought he must have misheard. Since when were you looking for a guy?
"Tinder?"
"Mmhmm," you hummed. "I'm just trying to sort out which photo to use, because I like this one where I'm in my flight suit, but guys don't really tend to go for that sort of thing."
You turned your phone to show him, and Jake swallowed hard. It was a photo he had taken a few months ago. He remembered that day. Your sunglasses were hooked on the top of your suit, and your helmet was tucked under your arm, and your smile was infectious.
"I like that one," he told you softly.
But you just rolled your eyes and groaned. "But you don't count, now do you?"
Jake shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Why are you on Tinder anyway?"
Now you laughed as you set your phone down. "Why do you think?"
He didn't want to think about it, even though he knew why. You were looking to hookup with someone. Or maybe it was even worse. Maybe you were looking for an actual boyfriend. Someone to spend all your time with. You'd be at the Hard Deck after work less frequently. You'd be going to the Padres game with some faceless idiot, and he'd be the one carrying you home after you overdid it at karaoke night. Worse yet, you could have your pick of any guy on that app who caught your eye, but Jake knew for a fact none of them were good enough for you.
"Rodeo," he grunted, unsure how to voice his concerns. You just tapped your screen a few times and then smiled at him as his heart clenched a little bit.
"I went with the photo from Reuben's wedding instead."
Jake ran his fingers through his hair. He didn't even have to ask. He also knew that photo well too. His voice was soft as he said, "Blue dress. Holding a martini. Hand on your hip." He didn't like the idea of a bunch of guys he didn't even know looking at you wearing something so pretty.
"That's the one! And now my bio is live on the app," you said as you tapped your screen one last time. "Wish me luck."
You stood with your tray and Jake told himself he would do no such thing.
---------------------------
"That photo must have done the trick," you mumbled the following day in the rec room on base as Natasha helped you sort through your matches.
"I'm sure it did," she replied in awe. "You look hot in it."
You wanted to believe her, but it didn't even matter right now, because the two of you were staring at a photo of a hot guy who had sent you a message. You gasped. "Is this for real?"
"Looks like it," she replied. "If you don't fuck him, I will. Happily."
"What are the two of you over here whispering about?" You looked up into Jake's smiling eyes and gave him a grin of your own.
"Rodeo is getting all the Tinder hotties," Natasha replied, and suddenly Jake's smile vanished. "Let me know if he sends you a dick pic."
"He better fucking not!" Jake growled as he tried to reach for your phone. "Show me what this asshole looks like so I know who to pound to dust if he sends you one." You rolled your eyes and held up your phone so he could see. "His name is Tony? And he's a dentist?"
"What's wrong with that?" you asked quickly.
Jake crossed his arms over his chest. "If you have to ask, then you don't want to know."
You scoffed and opened your messages. "You're being dramatic. And I don't get on you about who you decide to hook up with."
"So you're just trying to hook up with this asshole?" he asked, his lips curling in disgust.
Honestly, you weren't really sure. But he sounded nice in the messages he sent. "Would it really be so bad if I was?"
Jake scrutinized your face like he was in pain, and you had the craziest thought flash through your mind that perhaps he was jealous. But then the pinched lines on his forehead vanished, and his voice was completely calm as he said, "You do what you want, Rodeo. But don't come crying to me about it later."
"Fine," you told him as he walked away. And that's what spurred you to reply to Tony's message with a more flirtatious one of your own. You were allowed to hook up with him. You were allowed to go out on a date. Maybe you'd even eventually request a dick pic. Jake wasn't in charge of your Tinder profile or dating agenda.
A few short exchanges back and forth was all it took, and suddenly you had plans for Saturday night that didn't involve hanging with the guys at the Hard Deck for once. Tony was going to take you out to dinner, and you were already excited.
----------------------
"Where the hell is Rodeo?" Bradley asked as he returned to the table with three bottles of beer instead of four. "She's usually here by seven."
Jake rubbed his eyes with the heel of his hand. "She's not coming. She's on a date with some smug looking asshole named Tony."
"Good for her," Mickey piped up, earning a glare from Jake. "I hope she gets laid. You wanna grab Javy and play pool?"
With a groan, Jake dragged himself out of his seat and forced his body through the motions. He hit the cue ball with perfect precision, but meanwhile, all he could think about was some other guy's hands all over your body while he shoved his tongue down your throat. "Fuck," he growled, trying to fight the urge to text you. If you wanted him, you knew how to reach him.
Between shots, he glanced around the bar at all the other women, but he couldn't find a single one as pretty as you. He spent the rest of his night barely conversing with his friends while he hoped that your date was a complete flop. And when he left to head home alone, he caved and texted you to make sure you got back to your place safely.
That was over twelve hours ago. Jake still hadn't heard back from you. It was damn near noon on Sunday, and he was left assuming that you spent the night with Tinder Tony. When you finally texted him back, the response made him toss his phone aside.
Sorry, just seeing this now. Yes, I made it home safely. See you tomorrow.
Monday was worse. You were glued to your phone at every opportunity you got, and Jake could tell by the little smile on your face that you must be talking to that asshole.
"Rodeo, how was your hot date?" Bradley asked, bumping your helmet with his while he winked at Jake.
"Pretty good," you replied with a little laugh.
"You get laid?" Mickey asked obnoxiously, and you rolled your eyes before glancing at Jake. He was dying to know the answer to the question, but also terrified to hear it.
"Wouldn't you like to know," you replied, returning your attention to your phone. "Put it this way... I'm going out with him again for dinner on Wednesday."
"Who goes to dinner on a Wednesday?" Jake scoffed. "That's when we usually go to the bar! And what did you and Tinder Tommy even talk about the whole time? Dentures? Teeth?"
"No," you snapped at him. "He told me how pretty he thinks I am, and that he was nervous to meet me in person. And his name is Tony, not Tommy. So don't be rude when we stop by the bar after dinner on Wednesday."
"Can't wait to meet him," Jake grumbled, highly disappointed that your date had been even somewhat successful. And he still wasn't sure if you'd gone home with Tony. Or worse... if he'd gone home with you.
Jake had crashed in your bed with you once a few months ago when you hosted game night. Mickey, Nat and Bradley all passed out in your living room, so you'd taken him by the hand to your bed. Every time he thought about it, he could practically feel the warmth of your body next to his and your foot hooked over his ankle. The idea of someone else there engaging in pillowtalk or fucking you just right was way too much for him to handle, because he was starting to feel like he wanted to be that person.
------------------------
Okay, so Tony was a little boring. A lot boring, actually. And on Wednesday night at dinner, he actually did mention dentures, and you could practically hear Jake scoffing from the Hard Deck. But Tony was hot and nice and he paid for dinner. Could you really hope for more than that?
"So, you mentioned stopping at a Navy bar?" he asked as you walked back to his car. "I keep forgetting you're even in the Navy. It just doesn't seem like you."
Maybe you should have used the other photo for your dating profile since you'd had to remind him twice already that there were a lot of women in the military now. "Yeah. It's called the Hard Deck. I usually hang out there on Wednesdays, and I thought maybe my friends could meet you?"
"Sure," he replied, and he even played boring music on the way there. But when he walked you inside, he kissed your cheek, and that felt kind of nice until Jake was looking. You felt embarrassed and a little guilty when he scowled at you from the pool table, so you eased yourself away from Tony and took him by the hand instead.
"Hey, guys," you said cautiously as you approached the pool table. "This is Tony."
Jake's jaw was clenched tight as he reached out to shake hands with your date in a death grip, and you cringed as he said, "Nice to meet you, Tommy."
And it all went downhill from there. You had to correct him three times, even though you were sure he knew Tony's name. And even the other guys didn't really seem to mesh well with Tony. Bradley looked scandalized when he told them he didn't like beer or playing pool, and Mickey tried to make a dentist joke that just didn't land.
You wanted to crawl into your bed and not come back out for a week. You also kind of wanted to ask Jake what his problem was. Tony was a nice guy. His hand on your back felt nice, and his goodnight kiss at your front door was nice. There was even some tongue, and you didn't stop his roaming fingers. Maybe another date or two and you'd ask him to come in.
"Would you like to get dinner on Saturday night?" he asked as his lips grazed your neck. "At the Boathouse?"
You closed your eyes and leaned back, and the image of Jake took over. His lips were on your earlobe, and he was whispering your name as you led him to your room. His hands were settling on your hips and squeezing gently as you melted into his touch.
"What do you think?" Tony asked, and you were jarred back to reality by his voice.
You swallowed hard and nodded as you opened your door. "Saturday night sounds good," you said as you ducked inside. "See you then."
You couldn't have Jake. You just needed to get it through your head that he didn't want you like that.
------------------------------
Jake knew he was behaving poorly even as he was doing it. Tony looked annoyed by him, and you looked embarrassed, but he just kept calling him the wrong name and standing off to the side like a dick. He was actually the asshole. Not Tony. And he needed to apologize to you at work the next day.
He found you in the hangar, pacing back and forth as you played with the strap on your helmet. When you turned, he started to say, "Hey, Rodeo, I'm really-"
"I need your help," you blurted out when you saw him heading your way. "I need you to come shopping with me tomorrow after work, because I wore my only two dresses already, and everything else in my closet is ridiculous. And Tony is taking me to the Boathouse on Saturday, so I can't just throw something together and call it a day."
Jake ground his back teeth together. The Boathouse was nice. As in, he could think of at least three people he knew who got engaged there. How much money did dentists make anyway? He was full blown jealous now. He knew that. But you'd asked him for help, so of course he was going to do whatever you wanted. Your eager eyes were enough to make him agree on the spot.
"Where are we going shopping?" he asked softly.
You looked so relieved as you said, "The mall. I don't think it will take too long, and I can treat you to dinner as a thank you."
"No," he replied. "You don't owe me anything, Rodeo."
"Thanks, Jake," you whispered as you threw one arm around his neck and pulled him in for a hug. "I know I can trust you to tell me what looks good. Because you're a guy, and you know what guys like. I've been in such a rut, and I don't even know what looks nice on me anymore. But I trust your opinion."
He wrapped his arm around your waist and held you a little closer. If you trusted him, he wouldn't let you down. He never wanted to let you down. He would take you to the mall and tell you which outfits looked nice on you, even though he knew it would be all of them, and he would be cool about you dating Tony. "Sure, Rodeo. Anything you want."
When the time came, he was miserable. You seemed excited, bouncing on your feet in your jeans and sneakers as you collected dresses and cute little outfits to try on, but he knew none of this was really for him. You'd just be giving him a little sneak peak of what Tony would have his hands all over.
"How about this one?" you asked, holding up a red mini dress that made Jake's mouth dry up. Then you moved it in front of your body and looked down. "It's probably too much for me."
He wanted to tell you that you couldn't pull it off, but he knew the fucking thing was made for you. "Try it on and see," he said softly, so you added it to your pile. Then he followed you like a puppy dog to the fitting room, holding half of the dresses for you to try on. When you passed the lingerie section, Jake had to watch you grab a few lacy items. "Have you slept with Tinder Tommy yet?" he snapped when you picked up a black bra and added it to your arms.
You looked up at him with a soft pout. "Well, no. That's why I'm trying to buy some sexy stuff, you know? Just in case I want to take it there."
Jake had seen you in your bathing suit many, many times. You didn't need to be wearing anything made out of lace and silk to look sexy, but the sight of you in half of this shit would probably give Tony a damn heart attack. Then he realized as you led him along that he himself might not make it out of the fitting room alive.
"Just stand out here, okay?" you said softly, guiding him against the wall. He grunted in response and watched you line up everything you wanted to try on inside the fitting room before closing yourself inside. You kicked your shoes off, and then he watched you push your jeans down to your feet through the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor. You stepped out of them, and his imagination started to supply the rest.
You were completely naked now, he was sure of that fact, and you were only a few feet away from him, separated by a flimsy door. His head tipped back against the wall as his breathing grew a little deeper. Your toenails were painted bright green, and you were talking quietly to yourself as you stepped into a black dress and started to guide it up your legs.
"This isn't too bad," you muttered, and a few seconds later you were unlatching the door and pulling it open with an apprehensive look on your face. Jake's jaw dropped open as you stepped right up to him and asked, "What do you think?"
"Rodeo," he grunted, fisting his hands at his sides to keep them from touching you as you spun slowly in front of him. "Looks good."
You frowned a little more. "I was hoping for better than good," you replied, twirling away from him and back into the fitting room.
Jake's body was thrumming with desire as he watched that black fabric pool at your feet under the door. "It was better than good, Rodeo," he said, nearly choking on the words as you stepped to the side and bent to pick it up.
"I'll try the red one," you informed him, and he had to press his lips together, knowing what was coming next. This time it took you a little longer, and he watched your feet under the door as you turned in front of the mirror. "It's really short," you finally said as you opened the door again.
"Jesus Christ," Jake moaned softly. The thing fit you like a damn glove. Every curve and soft dip of your body was right there, begging to be touched. His palms were sweaty as he wiped them on his jeans, and then you spun, ending up just inches away from him again.
He couldn't speak, and maybe you took that as a bad sign. "It's too much," you said with a little laugh. "I know it's too much, but it was fun to try it on anyway. It made me feel sexy," you said with a little shrug, barely able to meet his eyes. "I think the black one might be better for dinner at the Boathouse? Or do you think this one?"
Jake snapped out of his daze and remembered why he was here, suddenly pissed that this little fashion show wasn't just for his own benefit. "Come on, Rodeo. Tinder Tommy? Really? You think he deserves this?" When you just kind of shrugged at him, he said, "Get the red one if you're just looking to get laid."
"Okay," you replied, your little pout back on your pretty lips.
He pushed away from the wall until he was nearly touching you. Practically snarling, he said, "Are you just looking to get laid?"
"Maybe," you said softly, looking at his neck. "He's actually into me, so maybe. I don't know, Jake. It's been a long time since a guy chose me, you know?" He opened his mouth to tell you that any guy in the world would choose you when you said, "I have one more dress."
Then he had to stand there and watch the red fabric hit your feet before you guided the tiniest little green dress up your calves. He was jealous. He was so jealous. And the fact that he'd had a whole fucking year to ask you out instead of fucking wasting his time was crashing down on him right now. You were going to wear one of these dresses to the Boathouse tomorrow, and Tony was going to take it off you. He was going to fuck you, and then someday you'd probably get married. Jake would be at your wedding sitting between Mickey and Bradley and making himself sick over this whole thing.
The door opened. You were stunning. You didn't even leave the fitting room doorway this time in that green dress that was hugging your tits and your waist and showing off so much leg that Jake thought he was going to black out. "I can tell by your face that it's not good," you said with a wince. "It's a little too low cut, so I couldn't imagine wearing it in front of Tony."
His voice came out low and rough as he said, "You're wearing it in front of me just fine."
"But I don't count, remember?" You closed and locked the door, and Jake was immediately leaning against it. Literally each dress was hotter than the one before it, and Jake didn't know how to articulate what he was feeling right now. How on earth did he end up so far in the friend zone that he couldn't claw his way out if he tried? What the fuck made Tinder Tony so special? Why were you looking around on the app anyway? He couldn't even pinpoint when it had happened, but you were never going to take him seriously, even if he knew he could be what you wanted.
The rustling of fabric and the sound of the zipper had him resting his forehead on the door. "Rodeo, Baby, you can't...buy one of these dresses. Not for Tony. Okay? Come on. He's not good enough for you."
"Oh." That was all you said. You just replied with one word, and Jake's blood was boiling. He wanted to dismantle the entire fitting room and take you back home and tell you that you could do a hell of a lot better than some lame ass dentist who didn't like beer or playing pool. But you'd just muttered one word, and he was dying to know if he could ever stand a chance at making you happy.
"Rodeo?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. You unlocked the door and he stepped back a few inches so you could open it, expecting to see you in your jeans once again with the dress of your choosing in your hands. "Oh, fuck," he groaned, his heart hammering in his chest. "Absolutely not!"
Jake pushed you back further into the fitting room and managed to wrench his broad shoulders through the doorway before kicking the door closed. You were biting your lip, your eyes wide as his hands came to rest on your lace covered hips.
"Jake," you whispered as he shook his head at the sight of you in a lacy black bra and tiny underwear.
"What the hell are you thinking?" he groaned, fingers digging gently into your warm body as he listened to the little sound you made. "You're killing me here." Your hands came up to his wrists before you slid them up along his arms, and Jake took a step closer until his jeans were brushing against your bare belly. He would need to be removed from the mall in a body bag at this rate.
Then you whispered, "I like you. And maybe there's a chance that you like me, too? And maybe that's part of the reason I asked you to come here with me."
Jake swallowed hard as he leaned in, dizzy from the way you smelled so sweet and felt so perfect in his hands. "Dump him. Dump Tony." You whimpered at his words as he slid one hand down further, teasing the lace covering your ass at the same time his other hand went up to tug at the side of the bra. "Because this? This should be for me."
"Jake." Your voice was a needy whine as you scraped your fingernails along his shoulders and chest, trying to pull him closer. But he shook his head as he pushed you back harder against the wall, lips hovering over yours as you whispered his name.
He knew what he wanted. He'd known for a while, really, but now he was ready to take it. "I want to kiss you. But if I do, I'm not going to be able to go back, okay?" he asked, his voice a deep rumble as you wrapped your arms around his neck. "I won't go back to being Rodeo and Hangman, just friends. I will not do that. Not with you. Not when you count more than anyone else."
Your lips crashed against his, and Jake sighed in relief as he held you in his arms the way he'd been dying to for so long. The lingerie and all the little dresses were only for him. Your kisses and your smile and your fingers in his hair were for him, not Tony. He ran his hands down to your ass as you giggled and nipped at his lips.
"Pick a dress, Baby," he muttered between kisses. "And we'll get the lingerie, too."
"Okay," you replied with a smile before you took his bottom lip between yours, making him moan.
"Tomorrow night, I will take you out, and you can show me this little getup again if you want to."
You looked up at him with the prettiest smile he'd ever seen. "I want to."
---------------------------
You nudged Bradley with your elbow. "Hey, she's cute," you said, nodding toward the brunette across the aisle. "You guys should go talk to her." He and Mickey both leaned forward to look without any subtlety whatsoever, and you laughed.
"Maybe at the end of the inning," Bradley replied, manspreading so much in his seat at the Padres game that he kept bumping your leg and nudging your shoulder. But he was grinning, and you could already tell that he and Mickey were about to turn it into a competition to see who could get her phone number first.
But there was one key player missing from their game now, and you smiled as you saw Jake apologetically climbing over everyone else in your row before plopping down into the seat next to you and kissing your cheek with a smile. "The line was long as hell for your favorite beer," he said as he handed it to you. "Did I miss anything?"
You shook your head as Bradley said, "You're just in time to watch the real show, Hangman. Rodeo, I want you to time how long it takes before I get her number."
But you weren't really listening as Bradley and Mickey started to argue, and neither was Jake as he kissed your cheek again. You didn't feel like you were simply blending in, and you didn't feel like you were just one of the guys anymore. You were grinning and sipping your beer as Jake's lips met your ear and he asked, "Are you wearing that black set right now?"
"I'll let you find out later.

The Hangman Special
Summary: On a night out with your friends at a fancy cocktail bar, you are just trying to keep your head down and ignore the girl that your ex cheated on you with. The night only seems like it's going to get worse when you are dared to kiss a stranger at the bar. However, it seems like the odds might finally be in your favor when you notice a familiar set of broad shoulders. If you can be convincing, you think you might just be able to get your brother's friend Jake "Hangman" Seresin to help you out with your little problem.

Author's note: Dreaming about kissing Jake in a bar. Thanks to everyone who looked at earlier drafts of this. I hope you enjoy this if you take a chance to read. My inbox is always open if you want to let me know your thoughts. Reblogs with your thoughts, opinions, and tags are gold to me. I love reading through them.
The bar is buzzing with the loud chatter of patrons, the clinking of glasses, and the rhythmic beat of music. You are sitting at a corner table with your friends, a group with an eclectic mix of personalities. You are known for being more on the shy and reserved side, but tonight, you are even more withdrawn than usual. No one had mentioned that Tassie had also been invited to the evening's hang out at the bar. An oversight you felt was probably intentional since everyone knew Tassie had started dating your ex only a week after your breakup. She went so far as to post a picture of them together on her Instagram. It had been a few months since that happened, and until now, you had managed to avoid running into her. However, it seemed like luck had run out.
"Hey, I've got an idea that would spice up the night," Cece says after the first round of drinks. She is one of your bold and outspoken friends, and you aren't sure you like how she is eyeing you with a mischievous glint. "Let's play truth or dare."
The whole group groans at the suggestion, and one of your friends vaguely wonders if you're all still in middle school playing that kind of game. Despite the initial lack of enthusiasm, after another round of drinks, the group is laughing and entrenched in the game.
When Cece sings your name when she finishes her turn, you are nervous by the sly smile she is wearing as she formulates an option for you when you hesitantly concede to doing a dare. "You're the only one of us still single, so I dare you to go over to the bar and give somebody a kiss."
"What?!"
"Just a quick one, nothing too scandalous," Cece says placatingly. "Come on, live a little! It's just a bit of fun. What's the worst that could happen?"
"I bet they won't do it. They're too chicken for this kind of thing, not one to step out of their comfort zone," Tassie says. It makes your blood freeze in your veins because you know those words. You have heard that criticism thrown at you in the past, but not from her, from your ex.
Your eyes narrow at her, and you ask, "Too chicken? Seriously?"
"Yeah. Please, prove us wrong. Show us you can do something spontaneous," Tassie taunts, grinning. You feel a surge of defiance welling up. Even though you're reserved, you are not one to back down from a challenge, especially not when the woman who cheated with your boyfriend is acting like you're the one who should be ashamed. Acting like she is better than you.
"Fine, watch this," You declare, feeling hot with a mixture of embarrassment and determination. As you stand up, your friends exchange amused glances, convinced that you are about to back out of the dare.
With absolutely no intention of  backing down, though, you scan the bar. After a moment of examination your heart soars because you realize you have this dare in the bag. You have the advantage even, because there is a familiar tall, broad-shouldered blonde at the bar that you know all too well. Jake Seresin, or Hangman, is one of your brother's best friends, and he is looking just as delectable tonight as he always does. The group would undeniably be impressed with you kissing someone so handsome, and you knew one way or another you could convince Jake to help you out.
"Cece, I'll even let you pick since you made the dare. Point out the hottest man in the bar, and I'll kiss him." You say confidently. There is no doubt that Jake is the most attractive person there, and he is just Cece's type, too. She falls right into what you want, pointing Hangman out for you. The rest of your friend group hoots, making even more comments that you aren't going to follow through with the dare and approach someone who is that drop-dead gorgeous.
Ignoring their taunts, you square your shoulders and walk with as much confidence as you can summon into sashaying across the bar. Putting mental effort into trying to project some form of hotness onto yourself not only for the confidence boost but also the bit of spite burning in you.
Reaching the bartop area, the hesitation starts to set in as you admire Jake's profile. He is sitting on a bar stool leaning against the counter, patiently waiting for the bartender in the crowd that is starting to grow. Taking one last breath to steady yourself, you reach out and delicately set a hand on his bulging bicep.
"Hangman!" You say brightly as if you're surprised to have run into him. Jake turns to face you at your touch, and an easy wide grin spreads across his face.
"Fancy seeing you here, my dear! How are you?" He asks as his eyes trace you slowly from head to toe and back again, the grin on his face not slipping once.
"Oh, I’m fine, and I am so glad I ran into you."
"Most people are," Jake says, winking at you. You are nearly distracted by his handsome face and flirty tone. He looks like he has put on even more muscle since you saw him last. The green button-down he is wearing appears close to bursting at the seams with how it clings to him. "So, what have you been up to these days?"
"Are you still single?" You blurt quickly, ignoring his question, not wanting to lose your steam.
"Yes, Ma'am. Last I checked. Why?"
"Perfect, can you do me a huge favor?" You ask.
"I'm always happy to help out a friend," Jake says, sounding increasingly suspicious. The smile hasn't dropped from his face, but his eyes have narrowed slightly, examining you.
Quickly standing on your tip toes, you loop an arm around Jake's neck, appreciating that he is sitting on a stool, helping level your height difference. Wasting no time, you pull him down to meet you in a quick kiss. Once his lips brush yours, you let go of him, stepping back, not even taking a moment to savor the feeling or enjoy having Jake this close.
With your mission accomplished, you have every intention of making a hasty retreat back to your friends and hoping that you will be able to forget this. You are going to erase knowing you've kissed Jake Seresin from your brain, and then the next time you see him, you're going to pretend this fiasco never happened. It feels like the best and only course of action for you to take.
However, you don't even get to make a full step away from Jake before large hands and thick arms circle around your waist, pulling you back towards him. He tugs until you are standing between his spread thighs, his hands maintaining their position on your waist.
"Woah now, where do you think you're going?" He asks, eyes darting around your face, studying you closely.
Embarrassment at having to explain your actions rushes through you, turning your stomach and overriding or maybe enhancing the butterflies there. You glance away from Jake towards your friends and see them watching with rapt attention. Then his thumb moves in a slow soothing circle, drawing you back towards him.
"I'm sorry! My friends dared me to kiss someone at the bar, and when I saw you, well, I knew it wasn't a lost cause because you're not a complete stranger."
You refuse to believe that the frown that flashes on Jake's face is one of disappointment. However, it's hard to ignore when his eyebrows are scrunched together, and his hands are so warm you feel it bleeding through your clothing.
"You could at least buy someone a drink before stealing a kiss, you know. That's just some common decency."
"I'm so sorry, Jake," you apologize again. "Let me buy you a beer for your troubles."
"Naw, you don't got to."
"Well, now I have to because you made me feel bad," you say, waving your arm to try and flag down a bartender.
"I didn't take you for one to just kiss someone on a dare," he says conversationally. You try not to wriggle uncomfortably in his hold, but without even trying, he seems to have pulled you even closer.
"I normally wouldn't be," you agree. "But the girl who I highly suspect of cheating with my ex while we were still together is here. I'm sure she thinks she's better than me and that I'm a boring prude."
"She clearly has never been around when you drink tequila," Jake laughs. You can't believe he would still remember the camping trip from years ago, where you were drinking tequila. Definitely notable because it was probably the last time you had dared have any of the liquor.
"Can you please forget about that? And tonight, too?" You request. Jake pretends to think it over, humming lightly before shaking his head.
"Sorry, no can do. It's already burned into my eidetic memory." You huff at his response, avoiding eye contact with him to try and catch sight of the bartender again. "You know, if you just asked me first, I would have given you the friends and family discount."
"And what is that?"
"Pretty similar to buy one get one free," he says, his voice dropping a little lower. Your mouth falls open in surprise, but you can't find any words. "Could have given you more than a quick peck, something that would really wow your friends."
Trying very hard not to imagine what kind of kiss Jake would consider wowing, you decide to deflect. Jokingly saying, "Didn't think you were from one of those kinda southern states. Do you make a habit of kissing family members?"
Jake throws his head back and laughs full-bellied at you. "The friends and family of my friends discount then," he amends.
"I already hate being in this situation. I don't want more of a pity handout than I've already taken."
"Darlin," he sighs, shaking his head at you. "I would have even given you the Hangman special. Which is a deal, bargain, and steal. Comes with a kiss that's guaranteed to impress friends, people who cheated with your atrocious ex, everyone in this bar, and has even been known to, on occasion, inspire a standing ovation."
"Ha.Ha. You're so funny," you say dryly, rolling your eyes.
"I am, thank you for noticing," Jake says. "However, I think you deserve that kind of kiss to prove a point to your friends over there."
"They didn't even think I would be able to make it over here to talk to you." You admit to him, glancing over at your friends again, a little displeased that they are still obviously observing your interaction.
"That them over there?" He asks, following the direction you're looking. You hum in acknowledgment. "Which one's the cheater?" He breathes, his lips ghosting the shell of your ear, sending a shudder down your spine.
You describe Tassie a bit to him, finding yourself shifting closer into his embrace, enjoying how he is somehow able to help most of the chaotic bar disappear from your senses. It's hard to think about the noise or the increasing number of people starting to press in when Jake's touching you. When he picks out who she is, Jake grunts a little. He lowers his face and nearly kisses your neck over the pulse point. His hot breath tickles the spot, causing shivers again as he declares, "I don't see the appeal."
"Wish my ex felt that way," you sigh.
"Fuck him," Jake says with conviction. Drawing a bit back from you to make eye contact again. His green eyes are clear, and in the dimmed mood light around you, they seem to shine even brighter than usual.
"You sure you don't mind me having kissed you to prove a point?"
"My dear," he laughs like you told him a funny joke. "I can't imagine a situation where I would mind you kissing me. Let alone one where I get to help you out."
Sliding your hand up his chest to casually rest on his shoulder, you wonder, "Is the Hangman Special still available?"
"Yes, Ma'am."
"Guaranteed to be wowing?" You check.
"Got a warranty for you and everything," Jake says lowly.
Your hand curls around Jake's neck again, and you attempt to tug him closer to you. He doesn't even budge, though. One of his hands slowly traces up your side from your waist until he is cupping your cheek. Then Jake leans close, his breath ghosting over your lips, where he lingers for a moment. Your eyes flutter closed, and as soon as they do, his lips press to yours. This time, it's not a quick peck.
He is slow and deliberate in how he kisses you. Tilting his head to the side to get a slightly better angle, Jake uses his hand on your face to urge your lips to align better with his. Pliable to his touch, you open your mouth to him, seeking even more, and rewarded when Jake's tongue brushes against your own. You never doubted that Jake would be a good kisser, but knowing firsthand is something you know you won't be able to erase from your memory. When the kiss starts to border on indecent, he pulls away.
You linger in the moment, keeping your eyes closed until your heart doesn't feel like it's going to burst from your chest. While you are in that limbo spot, his thumb slowly strokes your cheekbone. Sea glass green is the first thing you see when opening them again, Jake not making any effort to veil how he is admiring you. His lips are slightly pinker now than they just were, and you can't help but imagine how pink and swollen they would get if you had the opportunity to get this man alone on a couch.
Just as you consider requesting that he kiss you again, just to really really solidify how good you are to your friends, because obviously, three kisses are much better than the one they dared you to get, you are suddenly bumped from behind. The motion roughly shoves you against Jake's solid chest. Both his hands automatically return to your waist, tightening as he steadies you there. Glaring over your shoulder at whoever bumped you, he asks, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm okay," you breathe. Being this close to him, the woodsy scent of his cologne tickles your nose. And you suddenly wonder why exactly he is in this upscale cocktail bar dressed so nicely.
"I'm glad you decided to kiss me and not any of these other assholes," he mutters darkly, still glaring over your shoulder.
"Well, it wasn't really a choice." You reveal, which has his eyes snapping back to you in an instant and a frown pulling at his lips. One of his thumbs that's resumed making circles on your waist stops, and the other falls off your waist entirely now. He doesn't move otherwise, but his presence feels less consuming. Tersely, he responds, "I see."
"I may have skewed the odds. Told my friends to pick the hottest man they could find. What would you know? They picked you." You explain quickly.
"That's some good luck on your part."
"It wasn't luck, not really."
"How do you mean?" He wonders.
"I knew they would pick you."
"What made you so confident?"
"Because, Jake, you are, hands down, the most attractive person here," you reveal to him shyly. Your fingers curling into his silky shirt, where they have found themselves on his chest after being pushed.
"See now, I don't think that's true," he says, his eyebrows pulling together. The frown is gone though, the edges of his lips quirking up again.
"Oh please, Jake. Do not pretend you don't know how handsome you are."
"I'm aware. However, that doesn't change the fact that you're the most attractive person in this bar tonight."
"You're a flirt," you accuse him.
"I am," he agrees with no argument. "But that don't make me dishonest or mean I'm not genuine. I haven't been flirting with you just for the sake of it."
Warmth blooms in your center at his words, and you nearly forget all about trying to escape away from him. Right now, you just want to get closer, as close as he will let you. However, you are pulled out of the fantasy when you look away from Jake's intense gaze to see your friends and how most of the table seems shocked and scandalized. Wryly, you notice Cece giving you two thumbs up. It's like you could almost forget that this was just him being flirty and imagine he was kissing you for more than just helping prove a point. "Well, I appreciate your help with the Hangman Special. I know they will all be impressed and jealous when I head back over there."
"Now, wait a moment. You can't just sneak away. The Hangman Special not only comes with mind-blowing kisses but also a free night out, all expenses paid, and dinner at any restaurant you choose. "
"You just give that away to any random person who asks?"
"No, only the pretty ones I've had my eye on for a long while," Jake says, his eyes intense, the hand still on your waist flexing tighter for a moment.
"You have?" You ask, completely surprised.
"Yes, Ma'am," he replies with no hesitation. Before you can respond, the bartender finally makes his way over to you two, asking for your order. Jake instantly defers to you before ordering, asking, "What do you want, my dear?"
"I thought I already told you I'm taking one of the Hangman specials." You say, after taking a moment to think it over. The grin that lights up Jake's face is sunny and bright, and if you weren't being supported by his strong body, you would have probably fallen over swooning.
Turning back to the bartender, Jake requests two bottles of water and both of your tabs. As you peek over his shoulder while he signs, you see the bill consists of just one beer, the water, and the two drinks you've had tonight.
"So you want the full experience?" He asks you when you've taken a sip of water, and he has downed half of his in the same time.
"From what I know about you, Jake, I don't think you're someone who does things by halves," you answer, fiddling with one of the buttons on his silky green shirt. Then you are pushing a bit on his chest, trying to step away. When you do, Jake's hands find themselves on your hips again pulling you closer to him.
"Where you going?" He pouts.
"I just need to grab my purse."
"Whatcha you need your purse for, sweetheart? Don't you know I ain't going to let you pay for nothing?" Jake drawls.
"I'm sure you want that to come off gentlemanly, but you're close to flirting with misogynistic." You say, playfully poking a finger into his chest.
"No." Grabbing your hand and bringing it up to his lips, Jake brushes a kiss on your pulse point, saying, "I know exactly who I'm flirting with, and that is you, my dear."
The laugh you let out is slightly involuntary, but it makes Jake look like he won a prize, so you can't be too displeased, especially not when he has resumed drawing circles on your skin, and it feels like some sort of hypnosis you never want to end. "I'll be right back, and you can keep flirting with me for as long as you like."
"That a promise?" Jake asks.
"Sure thing," you agree, but Jake still hasn't let go of you.
"Do you want some company?"
"You don't have to."
"Little worried you're going to try and sneak away," he admits.
"But Jake, I am sneaking away," you say in a fake whisper as if sharing a secret. "Sneaking away with you from my friends and this bar." It makes him smile again, just like you were hoping it would. "Just wait here for me. Okay?"
"Okay," he reluctantly agrees. Despite agreeing, the hold he has on your hand actually slightly tightens. "One more kiss?"
"I'm starting to get the feeling that you're always going to want one more kiss."
"You already know me so well," Jake grins. You press your lips against his again in a quick kiss, careful not to get caught up in it, before slipping out of his grasp. When free, you practically skip away from Jake to grab your things.
Arriving back to your friends, you're greeted with loud whooping and even some clapping thrown in. Cece is practically giggling as she says, "I really didn't think you had that in you."
"What were you talking about for so long?" Another one of the group asks.
"Was that kiss as hot as he is?" Someone else wonders, and then questions are coming from every direction before you can answer any of them.
"It was great, he's great." You manage to get in. When they start to flood you with even more questions, you cut them off. "I would love to talk all about it, but I'm sorry y'all, I'm actually just over here to grab my purse."
"There is no way you are leaving with that guy," Tassie says incredulously.
Irritation and anger flares up in you as you turn to glare at her. "Really, there's no way? And why would that be Tassie?"
"Come on," she says, clearly surprised that you've decided to call her out. "You're just not the kind of person to go home with someone from the bar, and he doesn't really seem like your type."
"I don't know how tall, handsome, funny, and phenomenal kisser could not be someone's type," You say harshly, snatching your purse and jacket from where you had been sitting.
"I'm just trying to look out for you," she responds sharply.
"I don't think that's true," you snap back.
"Hey now, why don't we all chill out," your friend Marv cuts in placatingly.
"Sorry to interrupt," a familiar southern drawl says from behind as a warm arm wraps around your shoulder. You nearly sag into Jake. The urge to explode on your friends, more specifically Tassie, instantly absorbed by his presence. "But I was promised I could take this one out on a date tonight."
"We can't let our friend just leave with a stranger," Cece says, and you turn to narrow your eyes at her, frowning that she is butting in when she is the one who set all this into motion in the first place.
"While I respect that, I don't think you get to make that decision," Jake says lightly and a lot nicer than you would have in that moment.
"You could be a crazy serial killer or something," Tassie says.
"While I am a killer, that's normally just how people describe me in bed," he answers in a flirty, exaggerated way. That has you nearly coughing, you suck in air so hard. He gently pats your back and continues on. "If you're really worried though, you can look me up on Instagram. That's at LT.H_ANGM_N. I hope y'all have a good night. I know we will be," Jake punctuates the sentence with a kiss to the side of your head.
Stuck between laughing and balking you glance around at everyone’s surprised faces at Jake’s boldness. You know exactly what Jake's last Instagram post was, having spent several minutes the other day debating whether you should like the shirtless picture of him on the beach.
"Are you ready, sweetheart?" Jake asks you, practically muttering the words in your ear. All he needs is your nod before he confidently starts to turn you and lead you out the door. You manage to throw your friends a small wave goodbye, but it only takes a few steps for them to be out of your mind.
"Did you drive?" Jake asks you as the fresh evening air rushes over you both.
"No.” And you’re glad you didn’t when it means Hangman will be driving you home.
"Good," he grins, "do you mind me driving?"
"I don't," you answer easily, completely content to follow Jake to wherever he is going to lead you.
He stops in front of a Jeep Gladiator, and you aren't overly surprised by his taste in vehicles. He goes to open the passenger side door for you, but you don't immediately take his offered hand to get inside. Instead, you tug it as you lean against the side of the truck. Jake follows the motion easily, not hesitating to bend down and mold his lips to yours.
Jake looms over you, one of his hands balancing his weight against the side of the truck just over your head. The other on your side pulling you a bit closer to him. Looping your arm around his neck for some leverage, you let Jake take over your senses. The softness of his tongue paired with how he nibbles at your lower lip pulls a little whine from you.
When you have to pull away for a ragged breath, Jake groans low in his throat as you press teasing kisses down the column of his neck to the V of skin his shirt shows off. The hand on your waist slides up to cup your cheek and pulls you back to his lips. Kissing Jake is easy, he doesn't leave enough room for you to question if he's enjoying it. Nor do you have the capacity to overthink it as Jake's lips move surely and confidently with your own. All there is is him, his warm strong body, soft lips, and the calluses of his fingers.
Leaning backward, you pull Jake with you wanting to have him pressed flush because even though you're tasting him, caged in, surrounded by him it still isn't close enough. However, the motion presses one of the Jeep’s jutting door hinges sharply into your back. You can't help but gasp a small "ow" as you try to shift. Concern creases Jake's features, and he pulls you away from his truck into his chest, glowering at the vehicle as if it had somehow betrayed him.
"You okay, darlin?" He asks, his hands tracing down your back checking for injury. You lean more into his chest even though you don't really need the support, it's just nice to be in his arms.
"I'm fine," you reassure him.
"Let's get you out of harms way." He says pulling open the passenger side door. As you start to heave yourself into the tall truck Jake is practically picking you up and easily setting you in the seat. You blink at him in surprise at his show of strength. He remains there, standing in the open door, leaning closer and placing his hand just above your knee, his thumb drawing circles there. Then he asks, "So, where would you like to grab some dinner, my dear?"
"I've heard of this really great restaurant I've been dying to go to."
"Yeah? Let's make it happen then."
"Mhmm," you hum in confirmation. "It's called Hangman's House."
Jake's thumb immediately stops moving and the smile on his face seems to shift. The genuine glint there slipping away, to something hard for you to really identify, practiced or guarded. Whatever the change was you don't find yourself liking it and immediately wonder where you misstepped.
"So, Hangman's House, that's a pretty exclusive place. They don't usually do unplanned reservations," Jake says after what's nearly an awkward silence.
"That's too bad. I heard that they have great service." You say a little dejected but glad he told you no in a casual manner that you can play off.
"You're in luck though, my dear, because I know the owner. I think he would be willing to make an exception for us sometime, but they are better known for their breakfast menu." Jake responds upbeat again.
"I like breakfast." You mutter in what you think is a flirty way. However, it's obvious that you've missed the mark when Jake's hand drops off your leg completely now.
"Listen, if this is just a one-night thing, just some making out and fun stuff, where you are going to leave in the morning and pretend it never happened next time we see each other," he says seriously. Pausing, he runs a hand through his hair taking a measured breath, and you watch as the muscle in his jaw flexes. "That's fine, but I need to know it now."
As you study his face intently it occurs to you that maybe even men like Jake Seresin have insecurities. Maybe he was used to interacting with people where more often than not they only saw him as a handsome face with a nice body. People who were ready to leave the next morning. The realization that a one night stand isn’t the series of events he is interested in with regards to you twists a pit of uncertainty in your stomach. You feel a little uneasy not sure exactly where you stand or what he wants with you.
Reaching to catch Jake's lost hand and tangling your fingers, you start playing with the big class ring he is wearing. He allows the movement and relaxes his hand further, giving you additional leeway. The distraction of Jake's fingers gives you the courage to say, "I guess maybe I misunderstood that this was going to just be a nice fun night with you. Is that not what you were looking for?"
"I do want that," Jake says adamantly. " However, I don't just want that."
"What do you mean?"
"I want to bring you flowers, dance with you, write you love letters. I want to explore every inch of your body and heart until I know what makes you tick. I want you to forget that any other man besides me even exists." Jake presses himself close to you again, and he turns his hand to thread your fingers tightly together. "Now I'm good, and I mean really good my dear, but those aren't goals I can make happen in one evening. So I want to start with tonight, taking you out and giving you a good time. And then I want to do the same thing tomorrow or whenever you have free time. I want to do that for as long as you will let me."
"Oh wow," you breathe, taken aback by his declaration. "That's kind of a lot."
"I know, but I don't want my intentions to be unclear. I wasn't lying when I said I've had my eye on you for a while. I'm happy to go at whatever pace you need; I'll do whatever you want. However, if this was all just getting back at your ex and proving a point. If you can't see yourself wanting anything more with me past tonight again, I need to know." Now, Jake takes his turn playing with your fingers as he breaks eye contact to stare at where you're intertwined. "I'll happily let you break my heart, but I don't want to be blindsided by it.
Surging forward, you pull Jake in to kiss you again. It's an awkward angle, and the way the truck makes you taller than him feels odd. However, none of that matters when his lips are so pliable against yours.
"I don't want to break your heart," you tell him between kisses. "I want to go on dates with you, and I want to go home with you. I want to go to bed with you and do it more than once if we find out we are compatible."
"Are you doubting our compatibility?" Jake asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Not really, but you know it's better to make sure with these things. Have to double check, I think."
"That makes sense," he concedes.
"Now let's get some food so you can take me home and then to bed. Show me these killer skills you mentioned earlier."
"We can do a lot tonight, but we can't sleep together," Jake says mournfully.
"Why not?" You ask confused.
"Everyone knows you don't sleep together until the third date," Jake drawls.
"That's a cliche. Plus, why does it really matter?"
"Because I've been dreaming about forever with you, and when you want forever with someone, you don't want to skip any steps." Jake answers, dead serious and earnestly. It makes you wish you weren't in such an awkward position in the truck. If you were still outside pressed against it, or in the bar even, it would be so much easier to show him the appreciation and affection burning inside.
"We've got to be somewhere near the third date by now. We have tonight and that camping trip we went on. Oh, and that one time that everyone went bowling. Plus, there was that bonfire a few months ago!" You say, trying to think of occasions you and Jake had spent a good amount of time together. While considering it, you also realize he has nearly always gravitated to your side during group interactions, and going off tonight, that clearly wasn't as coincidental as you had previously thought.
"You deserve real dates," Jake responds with conviction, and the look in his eye really isn't something you can or even want to argue with. There isn't anything wrong with someone wanting to act like a gentleman with you; it's actually flattering, especially when it's clear Jake isn't going to play any guessing games with you concerning his feelings.
"Well, then we are wasting time when we could be on our first date," you say, pressing another peck to his lips and lightly pushing him away from you.
"One last kiss," Jake whispers as he lurches close again for another peck. Then, he gently closes your door and jogs over to the driver's seat, asking where you want to get a bite to eat.
The two of you end up at a fancy Italian restaurant where you share an appetizer, bottle of wine, and dessert. During dessert, Jake insists you pose for a picture. Despite your initial resistance, he convinces you, and then, nearly as soon as he takes it, your phone lights up with a notification telling you that you’ve tagged you in his story. He tells you before you even ask that he hopes your friends looked him up on Instagram but requests that you repost it on your own just in case they didn't. He claimed it's so they know he's not kidnapped you, but you suspect that it's more likely he wants to prove a point. And it's something you don't mind one bit, especially when he easily lets you post a picture of him on your own story.
After the restaurant, Jake drives you both out of town a bit to where the sky is much clearer and the stars are visible. The evening isn't warm enough to cuddle in the truck bed like he wanted, so instead, you end up in the backseat with the moon roof completely rolled back. You manage to pretend to be looking at the stars for about three whole minutes before crawlingl into Jake's lap to kiss him.
Before the making out can get too heated, Jake grips your chin, urging your face upwards to look through the moonroof. Gruffly, he mutters into your ear, telling you to behave. Words that only make you squirm in your newfound place sitting on his lap. He lets you stay there, though, his hands steady on your hips, and his lips leisurely brushing yours or your neck whenever inspiration strikes.
"What were you doing out tonight looking so nice?" You wonder absentmindedly, unbuttoning the top button of Jake's shirt. It's not with an ulterior motive. Really, it's because Jake's shirt is so soft, and the top of it is hiding his dog tags from you, which you have suddenly decided is unacceptable. The new skin exposed to you is just an added benefit.
"Ah, nothing to worry about darlin'."
"Common, you can tell me," you say, pressing a kiss to the underside of his jaw.
"You know, whinnies?"
It takes you a moment to place the restaurant and remember that it's across the street from the bar where you met up with your friends. "The wine bar?"
"Yeah," Jake confirms. "Well, I was on a date there."
"Oh." When Jake doesn't say anything, you decide you have to push the conversation forward. "So, what happened to your date? Were they not nice?"
"No, she was real sweet," Jake says, and you feel your stomach drop as if you aren't in the back of his truck and sitting in his lap right now.
"So why did you end up at Gem's?"
"I was checking Instagram before she got there, and I saw you post that you were at Gems, right across the street. And no matter how nice she was, I knew it wasn't fair that I was thinking of a different person the whole time. So, we didn't even make it through appetizers before I had to be honest with her about that, and then I swung by Gems, hoping I would bump into you."
"You were at the bar just to see me?"
"Sure was. So imagine my surprise when you found and approached me first."
"How would it have gone if you had approached me first?" You wonder.
"For one, I would have offered to buy you a drink before stealing a kiss," Jake says teasingly.
"You're not going to let that go, are you?"
"Probably not for a while," he tells you. You groan and hide your face in his neck as if that will save you from some of the embarrassment. Feeling his chuckles in his throat and rumble in his chest is soothing, and you pepper more kisses to his neck and collarbone as if you were tracing the sound.
"You wouldn't have left without a kiss, though?"
"I wouldn't have left without seeing you, and I would have done everything to try and convince you to give me one," Jake promises.
"How would you have kissed me for the first time?"
"Are you asking for another demonstration?" he wonders. As soon as you nod in affirmation, he pulls you close, repositioning you on his lap so you're straddling him. The darkness of the truck makes it so you can't quite see how green his eyes are, despite that they are still somehow bright.  He holds eye contact with you for a long moment. His hand cups your cheek, and like earlier in the night, he pauses, not closing the gap, observing you close. When you try to lean forward and seal your lips, he backs his head away. Then he chastises you while wearing a smirk, "I'm goin' to kiss you, baby. Now, let me do it how I want."
Anticipation tingles in you as Jake leans close; however, at the last minute, he swerves, pressing a kiss to your cheek, then the other cheek, your forehead, and your nose. Finally, his lips meet yours firmly. Closing your eyes, you sigh into the kiss. The feeling of being intimately connected to Jake again is nearly the same as relief. When your mouth opens, Jake licks into you, searching out your tongue with his own.
There no longer seems to be any will in Jake to tamper down the heat of your kissing. He allows you each time you push the envelope of the moment being just the soft sweet first date kissing he initially claimed to want. As he sucks on the sweet spot, her discovers on your neck, the way you grind downwards is involuntary and completely by accident. A low moan comes from Jake, and you like the way it sounds. So, the next time you grind down on him, it's completely intentional.
The dark slacks he is wearing don't do much to conceal his hardened length. After a few more rolls of your hips, Jake's hands tightly grip your waist helping you grind against him. He urges you into a rhythm that has whimpers, moans, and gasps passing from both your mouths between hot kisses. As you try to speed up, frantic lust beating so loud you can hear it in your ear, he doesn't let you. Though you are on top of him, there is no doubt that Jake is in complete control.
Just from this night, it's not difficult to imagine how he will be in the bedroom. Strong,  consuming, and in control. You can picture how he will confidently lead you exactly where you want to go, and you will get there because just a back of the car's make-out shouldn’t cause someone to be as turned on as you are right now. You unbutton his shirt and let your hands roam over his chest. Dragging your nails along his abs causes a full body shudder and Jake to grip your ass so hard you think you might bruise. It doesn't bother you, though, because how can anything that gets you closer to his cock be a bad thing?
“Jake,” you say in a sudden moment of clarity. He hums his acknowledgment but keeps kissing at your neck and squeezing at your ass. A particularly hard thrust upwards from him nearly has your brain going fuzzy as you desperately try to hold yourself together.  “Jake,” you repeat more forcefully, “we need to stop.”
“What’s wrong?” He asks concerned, detaching his lips from your skin and losing his hold so he is barely touching you.
“If we keep at this I'm going to beg you to fuck me right here right now,” you answer. He makes a strangled groan. With his swollen lips, lust filled eyes, and hard dick you're sure he wouldn't actually mind. “Which would be amazing but you told me about a three date rule and I agreed.”
“I did say three dates,” he responds and looks like he hates himself for it.
“But if it doesn't actually matter I would like to suck your cock at least once before we fuck.” You boldly tell him, twisting his dog tags in your fingers pulling them taut against Jake’s neck until the release beads give away. The chain falls into your grasp, and you use the warm metal to distract yourself.
“Fuck me,” he breathes throwing an arm over his eyes and leaning back. “You're perfect, you know that?”
“I'm not.”
“You are. So perfect, so hot.” He kisses you like he's about to ignore what you just said. Hot and a little sloppy with tongue and a bit at your lower lip. When he pulls away he rests his forehead against yours saying, “We are going to stop now  because I don't want there to ever be a doubt in your mind that I'll keep the promises I make to you.”
Your stomach flips with affection, and you sag, leaning heavily into Jake, just hugging him tightly, waiting for the lust that's sparked to cool. The two of you even manage to get some actual stargazing in where hands roam but in more so in an exploratory way than sexual.
Holding hands driving back into the city you can’t stop staring at Jake’s profile, or admiring his fingers or tracing the veins of his forearms. You are focusing on trying to convince yourself that this isn’t a dream, you're definitely going to wake up with hickies in the morning, and another date with Jake Seresin scheduled tomorrow. It’s something that if you had been told at the start of your evening, you would have laughed at the absurdity of the idea.
"I know it's really soon, but do you think that if you asked me again in a few weeks if I'm still single, we'll be able to change my answer?" Jake asks you after a bit breaking the comfortable silence you two had been in.
"I think that's possible. What do you think about that?" You wonder.
"I would change my answer tonight if you wanted me to."
"Jake..."
"Listen, I really like you, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. So as soon as you give me the okay, I will bring you flowers with a promise ring and ask if you want to go steady with me." Jake's thumb rubs along your pulse affectionately, "I'll change my Facebook relationship status. I'll get a nice little charm with your name on it for my dog tags. I'll take you to meet my friends and brag about how amazing you are." Jake leans over at a red light to press a soft kiss to your lips. "The whole shebang."
"That sounds nice. Does that deal have a special name, too?"
"Yeah, we can call it the Jake special. It is a whole package, long-term, all-inclusive deal."
"Extended warranty?" You check jokingly.
"It actually has a no-return, no-refund policy," Jake answers.
"That's a pretty big commitment," you whisper back, even though the idea of keeping Jake all to yourself sounds nothing but appealing.
"It's not something that expires. So how about tonight, we just worry about getting you home where you're going to let me walk you to your front door and give you a kiss goodnight."
"Just one kiss?" You ask in a pretend pout.
"Let's shoot for two, but don't be surprised if it's three, maybe even four."
"I want five," you declare stubbornly.
"Then I'll give you six," he easily offers.
You try to hide your smile but don't quite manage it. It's a permanent fixture the whole drive home and during all seven of the goodnight kisses you get. They aren't the best kisses in the world because Jake is smiling through them, too. It's okay, though, because you both know there's going to be more in the future, a lot more.

Calla Lillies [Jake "Hangman" Seresin] Chapter I
Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Hailey Dugan

Tumblr media
***Important!!! This chapter contains scenes of abandonment, alludes to child abuse and just is kind sad so be warned, and take care of yourselves!
My head is spinning, the handful of Advil I took earlier has done nothing to ease the pain. The plane once again jolts as it hits a batch of turbulence. I sigh softly.
God I hate flying.
I clutch my bag that is sitting in my lap harder. Thirty more minutes and then this god awful plane ride will be over.
Yeah just thirty minutes, easy peasy Hailey. You got this.
I'm going to have to do this again, maybe in a few days or maybe in a few weeks. The only difference is the next time I board a flight back home to North Carolina there will probably be a 7 year-old with me.
Holy fucking shit.
I have no doubts about this being the right thing to do. I never had anyone to step up and take care of me when my mom went off the rails. That is not something I want for my little brother, despite the facet that I didn't even know he existed until four days ago. No even despite that I know it's the right thing to do. However the gravity of the fact that I, may soon, be in charge of the care of a child is terrifying. Absolutely terrifying.
Holy Crap.
I have a little brother. His name is Lucas, he's 7. He probably has no idea I exist, the same as I him before last week.
I really hope I am not making a mistake. What if he wants nothing to do with me. I wouldn't blame him.
I don't know how I would react if a stranger showed up when I was seven to take me to a different state. He's probably not old enough to realize how awful our mother is yet.
Remember Hailey, don't talk bad about her in front of him.
The pilot's voice cracks over the intercom and he gives the final warning that we will be starting our descent soon.
I glance out the window. The morning sun is just now starting to peak out over the horizon and it is illuminating and the vast bleak and dead Arizona greats me.
I never thought I would be back here. In fact when I left over a decade ago I swore I would never step foot in this state again, simply because it's the same state that my mother existed in. I never wanted to see her again after I left. Still don't.
Now I'm back.
And I'm back to take guardianship of a kid.
That I have never met, or knew existed.
Who would've thought.
Not me.
I sigh softly and turn away from the window. I focus on making sure my seatbelt is tight and secure. Something I've probably done twenty times now.
I really hate flying.
I'm thankful for this mostly empty flight. At least the only people who have really noticed my anxiousness are the flight attendants. They gave me reassuring smiles as they offered me beverages and gave me looks of pity when I downed my Advil.
They must think I'm a mess.
The plane touches down on the tarmac with two big hops that make my heart sink into my stomach. My knuckles turn white as I grip my bag.
God I don't want to be on this plane anymore.
When the plane pulls up to the gate I unclip my seatbelt and stand, slinging my purse over my shoulder and reach for my small duffel. I didn't bring all that much. The cps social worker had assured me that I probably wouldn't be here for more than a week. If so I'll find a laundry mat.
The air is hot and sticky, despite it being just past 7:00 am. I feel the heat wash over me as I step off the plane and into the gate.
Hello Arizona, I have really not missed you.
My phone is off airplane mode now and I send a message to Matthew. Telling him that I landed. He won't respond, but at least I'm trying. I shouldn't be, but I am. That stubbornness my own mother use to complain about is still deep inside me, even if I should probably just let it go.
I can't think about Matthew right now. No, I need to focus on getting to the courthouse. Erica Adler, the attorney who took Lucas's case said if I want to petition the court for guardianship I need to be at the courthouse by 8:30. It's 7:45, and I still need to hail a cab and change.
Thankfully, hailing a cab is easy.
He turns up the AC as I slide into the backseat. Thank goodness. If it's one thing I didn't miss about Arizona is the blistering heat that is already raging on despite the early morning.
I glance at the driver one time before slipping my court clothes out of my bag.
I wish I could say this is my first time getting dressed in the back seat of a car. I slip the skirt over the leggings before shedding those and shoving them into my bag. I pull the jacket on over my tank top, and pull my hair up into a clip.
The cab pulls in front of the court house at 8:17.
"Thank you."
I stumble slightly as I step out of the cab. Goodness I haven't worn heels in a while.
The sweltering heat seems overwhelming as I climb the stairs to the courthouse. I can't even tell if the sweating is from nerves or from the heat. Probably a mixture of both, if I'm being honest with myself.
A cop is leaving as I'm entering and he holds open the door for me. I don't miss the look he sends me. I probably look frazzled.
Breathe Hailey.
Your about to try to convince a judge that you are capable and mature enough to take guardianship over a child you have never met.
The blast of AC of the courthouse is a welcome feeling. The security guard gives me an odd look before asking for my bags.
"Business?"
"My name is Hailey Dugan, and I'm here for the Lucas Saunders case."
"Ms. Dugan!"
My head snaps to the side, past the metal detectors a pretty but tired looking women stands. She waves to me offering me a small smile.
"She's with me Dawson, we got court in 10 minutes please hurry her through."
Dawson the security guard nods, his demeanor changes and he offers me a kind smile as he motions me to step through the metal detector. Another security guard studies the screen for a few moments before giving me a nod and a thumbs up.
Eric smiles at me as I grab my bags. "It's a pleasure to meet you Ms. Dugan." She extends her hand.
I shift my bags in my hand. "It's nice to mee you too" I say softly, I feel like if I talk any louder I'll stutter.
"We can hand those off to my while you go before the judge. You have a very good case, you have a very stable source of income, you have no criminal record, or any report of drug or alcohol abuse. Your own pass with Denise allows the judge to see that you understand the situation that Lucas is in. Honestly, your a blood relative, it is very unlikely that they will deny you to take over guardianship of Lucas. There's also the fact that you hopped on a plan at 3 am this morning to make this court hearing, which shows your dedication." Erica is rambling which I appreciate because the nerves are bubbling in my stomach.
"Ms. Dugan?"
My eyes snap up to meet hers. "Yes."
There's a soft smile on her lips. "I know this is a lot. Are you absolutely sure you want to do this."
"Yes." I don't hesitate and she nods.
She glances at her watch. "The previous court hearing seems to be dragging on a little longer than expected. Would you like to see him?"
I glance back at the security officer as if he'll get mad that she fibbed a little to usher me along. He is helping someone else now not concerned with me.
Erica is staring at me again, that soft pitiful smile.
"Am I allowed too?"
She nods. "Yes you are, you're his family too Ms. Dugan."
"Yes I would very much like too."
Erica nods, and she leads me down one of the many corridors in the courthouse. Her assistant grabs my bags from me, allowing me to slip out the folder of all the things Erica said might help my case. My heels clack loudly on the floors.
I should have worn flats.
Erica stops in front a large oak door.
Break Room.
She looks back at me once before pushing the door open. A man greets us first, gives us one nod before stepping out of the way.
A cartoon is playing on the old box TV. Except I couldn't care less about the loud TV. Sitting at the large table with a bag of chips and a soda is a dirty blonde curly haired boy. Big blue eyes are trained on the TV as he absentmindedly shoves a few chips into his mouth. My eyes fall to the dark blue cast on his right hand. A small cut that is scabbed over fall beneath the mop of curls on his forehead. My heart drops, and a lump forms in my throat.
God Denise look at what you've done.
"Lucas."
The boys head turns slowly his eyes turn from Erica to me.
"This is Hailey, do you remember us telling you about her?"
He nods softly, those big blue eyes are taking me in.
"Hi Lucas, it's really nice to meet you. Do you mind if I sit."
He shakes his head before turning his head to look down at the table.
I pull out the chair that is next to him and slowly lower myself down. He's nervous. Lucas fiddles with a string that is caught on his cast.
I sigh softly.
"Have they explained why I am here Lucas?"
Lucas nods his head.
"I know this must be really hard for you Lucas, I know you probably don't want to leave mom..."
"She's gonna be real mad if I leave." Lucas cuts me off and my heart aches at his statement.
He's too young to be like this. Too little.
"Do you want to leave Lucas, it's okay if you do, you know. I left too, a long time ago. It doesn't mean you don't love her." I say softly.
Lucas looks up at me, those big blue eyes look so sad and it's breaking my heart.
"I don't really wanna stay, mom's gonna be angry though. She always tells me it's just her and me and that she's all I got." Lucas mutters almost so softly I don't hear him.
"You don't need to worry about mom, I will take care of that." I promise, and it's true he won't need to worry about that anymore.
I just met him, but I have no doubt that I want to protect him from everything now. Even our own mom.
"I always wanted a sister." Lucas admits breaking the silence that fell over us.
I think I already love this kid.
"Oh yeah?" I grin softly.
He nods.
"Well I've always wanted a brother."
Lucas smiles at that. "So I'm gonna go live with you?"
I glance at Erica, unsure of how I'm supposed to approach the question.
"That's the hope Lucas, we have to go talk to the judge first."
Lucas nods.
"Is that okay with you?" I ask.
Lucas thinks for a moment. "Can you cook?"
I laugh softly at the random question. "Yes I can."
"Okay."
Lucas turns away and back towards the television. Whether he was saying it was okay that he may have to live with me or acknowledging my statement, I have no clue.
"We should go." Erica says tapping me on the shoulder.
"Alright." I nod before turning back to Lucas, he is already staring at me. "I'll be back."
"Promise?" Lucas sticks out his right hand, poking out his pinky.
My heart squeezes. "Promise." I whisper entertwining our fingers.
Erica leads me out of the room, and I can't help but clutch the folder in my hands tired
8 minutes.
That is all it took for me to become attached to that little boy. This morning I was questioning if I was insane for thinking if I could take care of a kid, and now, I don't know if I can leave Arizona without him.
Erica has kept it brief when we first talked about what had happened. I just know the basics. Denise was drunk and she was supposed to be taking Lucas to the pool. She blew through a stop light.
Some things never change.
"Are you ready? If you'd like we can go over what you're going to say to the judge." Erica asks me.
I shake my head. "I'm alright, I'm ready."
Erica nods and I see something flash in her eyes as she looks at me.
Admiration? Pity?
Who knows.
She leads me to a large court room, and she tells me to take a seat at the front row before going through to the large desk directly in front of me. When the time comes she will announce to the judge that a blood relative has been found who is willing to take guardianship over Lucas. At that moment I will be able to address the court.
Just breathe Hailey.
I smooth down the wrinkles in my skirt.
Just breathe.
Another lawyer walks in and he gives Erica a curt nod before looking at me. Goosebumps form on the back of my neck. Erica tenses slightly, but she still tries to send an encouraging smile my way. After a moment she leans over the railing to speak to me.
"It's Denise's lawyer, he might be petitioning for Lucas to return to your mothers care but that is highly unlikely. I knew this might happen just stay calm." She tells me quietly.
I nod leaning back in my seat.
Stay calm. Breathe.
"All rise for the honorable Judge Samuel Wilkins." A bailiff booms and I scramble to my feet.
Here we go.
After a moment we are allowed to sit and I sink back into the bench. My stomach is in knots.
"First on the docket, placement of Lucas Saunders. If no one steps forward the child will be put into the system permanently."
No, no, no that can't happen.
"Good morning judge, I am Erica Adler attorney appointed by the state and with working with CPS and family services we have found a blood relative that is willing to take responsibility for the care of the child." Erica's voice is even confident.
"Is the relative here?"
"Yes judge."
Erica turns and gestures for me to stand, as I push myself my feet Denise's lawyers speaks up.
"Judge, my name is Henry Faltin and I am representing Denise Saunders. She is petitioning the court for her son to return to her care."
She has to be kidding. She get's drunk off her ass and blows through her stop sign injuring her kid and has the nerve to just ask for him back like nothing happened?
Anger bubbles in my chest.
Just breathe.
"With all do respect Counselor, it has only been five days since Ms. Saunders incident that put Lucas in the care of the state. It is premature to ask that he be put back into her care." Erica rebuts and I can hear the annoyance in her voice.
Judge Wilkins peers over his glasses at us. "I am inclined at this moment to agree with Mrs. Adler counselor. Ms. Saunders needs help, and at this time we are unaware of the standing of the DUI charges brought against her. At this time I will not be allowing arguments for the child to be returned to his mother out of concern for the child." His tone is firm, unarguable.
Attorney Faltin nods but I can see his Adams apple bob. He is angry, or annoyed. He glances back at me, his eyes narrowing just slightly. I stare back, I won't waver.
She doesn't deserve to have him back so easily... or at all.
Breathe.
"Mrs. Adler please continue."
Erica nods and turns back to me.
"Permission to have Ms. Dugan approach my bench Judge?"
"Granted."
A court officer opens the gate for me and I walk to stand next to Erica who gives me an encouraging nod.
"I present Mrs. Hailey Dugan Judge, the child's half sister."
"Ms. Saunders is also your biological mother?" Judge Wilkins glances up from the file in his hands.
"Yes Judge."
He nods glancing back down at his file.
"I see one other child listed under Denise Saunders, the name is not Hailey Dugan though."
"Yes Judge, I changed my name when I was 18, it's..."
"I see it, I can understand the want to change it Ms. Dugan." There's a ghost of a smile on his lips.
My lips twitch upward.
"So you are willing to expect guardianship over Lucas Saunders, is that correct?" He allows the fills in his hands to fall closed and his hands move to clasp together in front of him.
"Yes Judge."
"What makes you suited to take guardianship over a child Ms. Dugan?"
His tone is calm and soft, despite the derogatory words I know he doesn't mean them like that. He wants me to prove I am responsible.
I take a deep breathe.
"I know this case seems odd judge. Before today I have never met my little brother, but I understand him in ways a lot of people couldn't. I ran away from my biological mother Denise Saunders when I was 15. Before that I was removed temporarily twice. After I ran away I ended up in the foster system in multiple states. Without meaning any disrespect Judge, the foster system is not something I want for Lucas. I have the means to care for him financially, I own my own business that provides a very steady source of income. I am in the market of a house already instead of a rental property so soon I will have the space a growing child needs. I have also compiled my financial and other documents here for you." I hold up the folder in my head and the Judge order the court officer to bring it to him.
He begins to rifle through it. "Judge I boarded a plane at 3 am this morning after Ms. Adler informed me of the pushes up court date. I have no doubts about my dedication to give Lucas what he needs. I understand exactly what he is going through. Mrs. Adler has also advised that if I do take guardianship over him that counseling is recommended. I've research child therapist in my area, you'll find their profiles in the folder as well."
My heart is pounding in my chest.
"This guardianship could turn permanent, or Mrs. Saunders could petition the court to regain custody. Are those things you are prepared for Ms. Dugan."
I swallow the lump in my throat.
"Yes judge."
He looks back down at the folder I gave him.
"You've compiled quite the documentation Ms. Dugan. I see the dedication."
My heart is going to pound out of my chest. I'm afraid if I look down I will find it actually pounded out of my chest and onto the table.
Breathe Hailey.
"Ms. Dugan, it is very rare that family members in cases like this take the amount of care and preparation for these circumstances. I am finding a deep admiration for what you have done and said today. You have also provided plenty of evidence that you will be able to support Lucas not just emotionally but materially and financially. With that being said I will allow Ms. Hailey Dugan to take custody and guardianship of Lucas Saunders."
His gavel pounds down. Erica is patting me on the back. Attorney Faltin is standing again, scrambling to get a word in.
"Judge! Ms. Dugan lives in North Carolina, surely the court cannot allow the child to be relocated so far from his mother."
"I saw Ms. Dugan's address of living Mr. Faltin. At this point in time I believe this ruling is in the best interest of the child. Should Ms. Saunders be found of no ill-doing involving the incident, the custody of the child can be revisited. For now he will be relocating with Ms. Dugan in North Carolina."
Judge Wilkins turns his attention to me. "Good luck Ms. Dugan." He gavels once more. "Next docket."
Erica is turning me in the direction of the side exit. I nearly freeze as I glance out into the gallery. Erica is still guiding me, but through the faces of strangers, in the back corner of the court room, glaring at me, is no other than Denise. My mom. Her icy eyes follow me and I am unable to look away.
11 years, that's how long it's been. That icy stare use to make me want to run and hide under my bed. Now I just feel angry.
You don't get to hurt him anymore.
I want to scream it at her.
But I can't.
instead I turn my head staring at the exit. She doesn't get a reaction. Not anymore.
Erica is staring at me a happy smile on her face.
"What now?" I ask a little breathless.
"There's some documents we will need to sign and get notarized. Luckily we are in a courthouse." She grins.
"What about Denise?"
Erica's smile drops. "I expect their will be petitions for phone calls and visitation, but until her DUI get's resolved there's nothing much they can do."
"She was drunk driving can they really dispute that."
Erica sighs. "Sadly yes, there are lawyers who excel in DUI argumentation and debate. Sadly Faltin is one of them. However her having a minor in the car is going to complicate it. Truly we won't know what's gonna happen. But for now you and I are gonna get the legal documents sorted and we are gonna prepare for you to take Lucas home."
I nod.
We begin walking down the corridor.
"Erica?"
"Yes."
"Judge Wilkins said it could be temporary."
"He's right."
"What if I don't want it to be temporary?"
"I suggest when you get home to North Carolina you get yourself a lawyer. If Denise is found guilty adopting Lucas will be easy. If not well..." Erica trails off.
I understand.
Erica continues down the corridor and I let the silence fall over us.
Wow.
15 minutes.
That's about how long we were actually in that courtroom.
15 minutes.
That's all it took to change my life forever.
It's worth it, I knew it was worth it from the second I laid eyes on that blue-eyed boy. Lucas is worth it. He doesn't deserve the hurt, pain and anger Denise leaves in her wake. He doesn't deserve those beautiful blue eyes to be drowning in waves of sadness.
I don't care if Matthew leaves me, or if I just changed my life forever. Lucas deserves to be a happy and carefree kid. It's not right that it was taken away from him already with the crash and our mother's inability to just do what's right for her kids.
It makes me angry that Lucas is going through this. He doesn't deserve it. I didn't deserve it.
Breathe Hailey.
Alright you did it Hailey. You now are the guardian of a seven year old, what's your plan?
Oh boy, there's no plan is there?

Main Masterlist ♡ Top Gun Maverick Masterlist ♡ Jake "Hangman" Seresin Masterlist ♡ Still the One Masterlist
Just like all my other stories, this has not been proofread, but please enjoy.
Warnings: Some swearing. Hope you all like it.
Also please don't come at me for not knowing Naval terms or their training. This is just fiction.
Gifs & photos do not belong to me.
Summary: There has only ever been one woman to rein in the ladies man that is Jake 'Hangman' Seresin. Too bad he let her get away. He has never fully moved on, always hoping that he would see her again one day. Just his luck that there is a bunch of new nurses that were hired.
Jake "Hangman" Seresin's POV
"And that is all for today. Tomorrow at 0600, there will be a group run. I expect everyone to be there and if you're not, you will have bathroom duty."
I groaned to myself when I heard Maverick say we have to run tomorrow. He is still insisting on us doing team building exercises.
I would rather us do something else instead of waking up that early, but there is nothing that I can do, unless I feel like cleaning out the urinals.
"Hey man, did you hear that there are a bunch of civilian nurses that got hired. They will be here tonight." Fanboy said to me.
Tumblr media
That brought a smile to my face. Civilians love a man a uniform and when I tell her what I do, oh boy, they always thank me for my service to our country.
'I always loved you in your uniform Jake.'
Her voice popped into my head. At that moment I could picture her the first time she said it to me.
It was just after our third date and I was showing YN a few photos of some of the people I have been training with.
"Save some for the rest of us." Coyote teased.
"If they want a piece of me, how can I deny them this?" They all groaned around me.
"Just don't go home with two of them like you did last time." Payback called out.
I smirked at him but what they didn't know what was that I left with two of them and that was because I knew them.
I knew them from when YN and I were dating and I was trying to get them to tell me anything about her.
"You're the one that messed up Jake." Ashley told me.
"You don't think I know that? I spend every single day knowing I messed up the one good thing that I had in my life."
"YN has moved on. Maybe it is time you did too." Cora said to me.
It felt like I got punched in the stomach when she said that. She has moved on?
Of course she did. What was she gonna do? Wait for me to grow up and realise that she is the one for me?
I was hoping she would, but I was just too damn late.
~
The next morning I woke up before my alarm. Angry at the fact that I have to be up at 5:20 AM.
Last night Maverick told us all that we will be running on the beach and that afterwards we will have the day to ourselves. So I made sure to pack for a day at the beach.
"Great everyone is here. Now we have a special guest with us. She heard that we will be running on the beach today and she asked to join us. Please welcome one of the new nurses, YN LN."
No, it couldn't be.
But there she was. Smiling and saying good morning, but once her eyes landed on me, the smile somewhat faltered.

YN'S POV:
I knew there could of been a high chance of running into Jake here. He could of been stationed at any of the locations I applied at.
"Okay, wasting daylight. Let's go." Pete said. I figured I would run behind them as I am not trying to be in competition with anyone.
Of course Jake ran past me and we did make eye contact briefly.
I ended up beside Natasha, who they call Phoenix. She seems nice enough. We didn't talk all that much as I was felt like I was dying from running.
I didn't realise how far we ran. "If anyone is not spending the day at the beach, Penny agreed to come and get them and drive them back to where we started after she drops off some beach supplies." Pete said.
I didn't want to be the only one to head back, so I went a bit down the beach so the group of them could spend the day together.
I went knee deep in the water, enjoying the sun on my skin. I tilted my head back slightly and closed my eyes.
But then I heard someone stand next to me. I was hoping it was Natasha, but it wasn't my luck.
"Hello Jake."
"How did you know it was me?" I opened my eyes and I turned to look at him. He looked good. Real good.
"Well you still wear the same cologne and it was the one I got you for your birthday." The last birthday I spent with him.
"Oh."
Awkward silence.
"How have you been?" He asked me after clearing his throat.
"Been doing good. Excited to be here actually. Needed something new and yourself?"
"Being one of the best Naval Aviators out there." He smiled but I didn't smile back.
"You know you don't have to show off for me. I know who you are Jake." The smile fell from his face.
"I know. It just came out of me."
I wanted to tell him that Ashley and Cora told me that he asked about me.
"So, got anyone in your life?"
"Me? Her name is Alice." I watched as a stunned look came over his face.
"Her?"
"Yes, her."
"How did you two meet?" I was going to answer him but my cell rang. I looked to see who was calling and I held up my finger to him.
"Hey baby."
"When are you going to be home?"
"Just after dinner Alice."
"But Mom," I heard my sister cut my daughter off. "Do not whine. This is her first day."
"Look I gotta go, I love you and I will see you later okay?"
"Yes Mom. I love you too." The line went dead.
"That was her I take it?" The sound of his voice was hurting.
"Yeah, it was."
"I gotta go. I'll catch you around YN."
I wanted to stop him. To let him know that I wasn't seeing anyone. That the person I was talking on the phone with was his nine year old daughter.
