6 Of My Favorite Boutique Menswear Brands
The Superior Labor
This handmade lifestyle brand out of Japan is constantly unraveling new takes on items that tackle the most intricate everyday tasks. Need a necklace you can ash your cigarette in? How about a pen cover?
If you can think something up, it is almost certain that Superior Labor has either created it, or at least gave it some thought and then realized it wasn’t uncommon enough for them. The brand also covers the basics as well.
One of their most recognized pieces is the shoulder bag made with a beautiful hand painted canvas and quality leather that both only get better with use. Superior Labor makes sure to take the quality time when assembling their quality goods. Each part of manufacturing is allocated to a certain master of his/her labor down to each and every rivet - hence the name ‘The Superior Labor”.
From belt hooks for your keys, to the well-known shoulder bag, you can expect us to continue to cover the bases while expanding our reach into the unique items that you simply can’t find anywhere else. The stance that The Superior Labor has taken on approaching the creation of goods is perfectly aligned with the way we curate our collection. We stand for something different, something appreciable, and something unmatched by your average brand.
Poglia
Max Poglia, a man of southern Brazil , raised with Italian heritage, is a master craftsmen, with an eye for beauty.
A craft is something that stems from most importantly a love and curiosity. Max Poglia began his craft that would become Poglia as creation and curation while mastering aesthetics and functionality. One of his early creations came when he desired to have a picnic-themed travelers pack that fit into his New York life, but had aesthetic that would harp on history giving a timeless appeal.
Moving forward, Poglia gained notice with some of his first pieces for acclaimed restaurant Buvette in collaboration with Chef/Owner Jody Williams. Following, another
Ginew
Ginew really is a special company based out of Portland PDX Oregon OR. They tote being the only premium denim company that is also Native American owned and operated. They have revisited some pieces from their heritage and reproduced them. What I find most surprising about Ginew is that a lot of their pieces don’t scream Native American influence.
For instance, they have a riders jacket with extra length on the sleeves and back - this was to account for the extra inches needed in the fabric while riding a motorcycle. This helps keep your skin covered while holding the handlebars. The owner’s grandfather used to have to ride into Harley Davidson during the week to work all week then ride home on the weekends and this rider jacket is modeled after what his grandfather used to wear in those long commutes. Motorcycle culture is very relevant in Native American lifestyle.
They do special collaborations with Pendleton blankets wool each season which are unique to Ginew only. A blanket-lined heritage jacket produces a lot of interest in these time-tested items. They’ve also just recently produced a pair of jeans out of the last roll of Cone White Oak Mills selvedge denim out of North Carolina denim mill. This is special because that denim mill factory just recently closed and this batch of denim is finite.
The leather patch on the jacket comes from deer hide skin hunted by the owner of ginew. That is as personal as a brand can get - acquiring these materials on their own and using it in a garment available for sale all over the United States. Made in Portland PDX Oregon.
Buttero
Buttero is a really nice and special shoe and boot company out of Italy. They are a 3rd third generation company that runs a very small operation. On top of creating sneakers and boots by hand, lasting and sewing all done in house, Buttero also tans some of their own leathers which is unique.
In a country not lacking in leather hides, Buttero has taken it upon themselves to create a unique and vibrant tannage for a lot of hides used in their shoe boot sneaker production. There are very few companies out there actually manufacturing a product that one could consider as hand made hand-made handmade but Buttero is the real deal.
If a company is small enough to where the employees are considered family, these are companies we are interested in. Margom soles horsehide leathers and unique runner soles are what we find interesting this season. We’re awaiting shipment for a couple of different styles including blue suede rough out leather sneaks as well as vegetable tanned leather and black leather too.
Hand lasted stitched sewn sneakers in Italy are special because they have a long history of shoemaking shoe making boot making.
Railcar Denim
Railcar is out of Arcadia, California CA Cali and makes high end selvedge denim raw unsanforized sanforized jeans.
They make it all ranging from jackets and pants to t shirts and button ups tees. While a lot of denim and menswear clothing companies are not actually producing these items themselves in house by hand in-house, Railcar is. Often times a company will outsource their products to be made in a place where many other companies are also making pieces.
Railcar Fine Goods RFG is done in house in-house. The owner, Steven Dang, has been purchasing and refurbishing old sewing machines and denim looms mills - he hopes to one day be able to create denim unique just to his company in California. These are old vintage machines that need a little tender love and care and are still able to generate proper results and install details into their products that one would expect to find in a fashion denim company. He had worked on the railway for quite some time, and eventually quit to do Railcar full time which is where the name comes from.
He also restores cars and is a savvy mechanic. My favorite fit is the Spikes Journeyman x001 indigo blue black denim. Warp and weft is important too, in terms of how the denim feels and the hand. Most denim will fade, but part of the appeal of a lot of these denim companies are how the jeans fabric can wear differently over time for each individual.
Kapital
With their collections often featuring a lot of indigo and organic in appearance fabrics, Kapital kapital is sure to catch the eye of most individuals. The town where Kapital was founded is in Japan, Kojima, which happens to be the denim capital of that country.
Kapital was founded nearly 30 years ago in 1984, and has acquired quite the cult following. My favorite piece from this most recent season is the longer trench coat style olive coat. They sometimes utilize a smiley face design on their clothing which is a slight nod to their humor behind the brand.
They always release a large collection of bandanas and the translation from Japanese to English is spotty and doesn’t quite read. This season there is a bandana featuring Japanese figures in various sex positions with verbiage like “thrilling explosive”. Many of the techniques in which the garments are produced draw inspiration from American workwear menswear.
There is a large crossover in this brand between old and contemporary in terms of aesthetics.
