Asuka Langley Soryu!
GIVE ME A CHARACTER;
and I’ll break their ass down:
How I feel about this character
All the people I ship romantically with this character
My non-romantic OTP for this character
My unpopular opinion about this character
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon. Asuka Langley Soryu is my girl. I love her, and I want good things for her. I relate to her struggles with anger, perfection and success. All I wanted was for her to not be a tragic hero/doomed to fail. Asuka was always meant to fall, and it sucks being "the extra." She is Iconic, and I love seeing her fashion in official promotional materials. I ship her with Shinji Ikari. I will also occasionally ship her in a poly-ship with Shinji and Kaworu. Non-romantically, she and Hikari are best friends, and I love their dynamic. Hikari is so good to her friend, and Asuka also supports Hikari. It was a healthy relationship in the chaos, with two girls being friends. Unpopular Opinion: Asuka may occasionally be a bully, but she is not abusive. She and Shinji were always meant to be the end-game pairing, and they will always find each other and connect. Their relationship shapes so much in the series, not just their progress with Angels and defending Earth, but they affect the other characters with their emotional states too (ex End of Evangelion is a lot of Asuka and Shinji sorting out emotions and feelings and deciding to live their lives) Asuka deserved more screen time in the Rebuilds to develop her as a person with her own goals and personality. In NGE, I think it would have been great if she got a win. Any win, really. Poor Asuka :(

For my sixty-seventh Evangelion book review, here is Shin Seiki Evangelion Koushiki Guide Book (Neon Genesis Evangelion Official Guide Book), published by Kadokawa Shoten. This 171-page paperback is a guide to Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's Evangelion manga, however it was released before the manga was finished, so it only covers the first 12 volumes (the whole manga was 14 volumes).
This book is not available in English or French - although the chapter titles are in English - but it has plenty of pictures. The illustrations are in full color for the first twelve pages, and then the rest of the book is in black-and-white. (The book's dust jacket is also removable, however there is no alternate cover art hidden underneath.) The full color pages are devoted to the cover art for the first 12 volumes of the manga. For example, here is the cover for Volume 6, which features Toji, Hikari, and Evangelion Unit-03:
Tumblr media
It's interesting how some of the characters' hair color in the manga is different from how they look in the anime. And as many of you probably already know, Shinji's eyes are a different color as well.
By the way, this is going to be another multiship-friendly review, so expect a mix of ReiShin, KawoShin, and AsuShin. Keep reading for the rest of the book review, plus a few more pictures!
After the Cover Illustration Gallery, there is a title page and a Table of Contents page, and then the first chapter of the book which is called "the Character". This section contains pics and information about various characters, including dates of birth and blood types, and discussions about the characters' personalities. Shinji, Rei, Asuka, Kaworu, and Misato each get 4 pages devoted to them, while the other characters only get one or two pages. The other characters in this chapter are Toji, Kensuke, Hikari, Gendo, Ritsuko, Kaji, Fuyutsuki, Maya and Makoto and Shigeru (these three characters are squeezed together into two pages), Yui, Naoko, and Keel. This part of the book also contains three brief columns about other topics: Evangelions and Angels, Nerv, and Seele.
By the way, even though this chapter has lots of pictures, they're all from the manga, so you won't see anything new here if you've already read the manga. Also, many of the pages have multiple images all crammed together, so the pics end up being very tiny. Most of the book is like this, unfortunately.
The second chapter of this book is called "the Episode", and it contains illustrated timelines for events in the manga (again, only for the first 12 volumes), plus information on battles, characters' relationships, and some background stuff about Nerv and Seele. The section on relationships isn't just about romance; it also covers family (for example, Asuka and her mother) and friendships (such as Shinji and his classmates). Anyway, I said this would be a multiship-friendly review, so I'll get to that now. Let's start with Rei and Shinji. This chapter devotes three pages to Rei's relationship with Shinji (two of those pages are for Rei II, while the third page is about the introduction of Rei III). Here is a piece from one of those pages:
Tumblr media
Awww, Rei and Shinji holding hands! So sweet! (By the way, the above scan is larger than actual size, so you can see it better. As I mentioned before, a lot of the pictures in this book are really small.)
Moving on, this chapter has two pages about Kaworu's relationship with Shinji. Here's a piece from one of those pages (yes, the kiss is here):
Tumblr media
Such an iconic moment. ^_^
As for Asuka and Shinji, um... This chapter only devotes half a page to their relationship. Yeah, not even one full page (the other half of the page is for Asuka and Kaji). What the heck? None of the illustrations for the Asuka and Shinji portion are romantic, either: There's a picture of Shinji, Toji, and Kensuke freaking out; a pic of Asuka kicking somebody; and a picture of Misato standing next to Asuka. That's it. Fortunately, there are some images later in the book that I think AsuShin fans will like, so don't worry, I'll get to those next!
The third chapter of the book is "All of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto". It starts with a Q&A section, and then there's a gallery of the title page illustrations from various chapters of the manga. Like many other parts of the book, this gallery crams multiple images onto each page, so most of the pics are tiny. But at any rate, here are some cute ones that AsuShin fans can enjoy:
Tumblr media
Adorable pics, aren't they? The one of Shinji and Asuka dancing together is so precious!
The next part of this chapter has some pictures and info about other manga that Sadamoto has worked on, plus his art books, and other things for which he has done illustrations or character designs such as album covers, video games, and anime. There is also a timeline of his career, and some extra comments from him.
Okay, next we have the fourth chapter of the book, which is called "Message from EVA Friends". It starts with a conversation between Hiroya Oku (creator of the manga Gantz) and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. After that, there are short messages from some of the Evangelion anime staff: Hideaki Anno (creator), Ikuto Yamashita (mecha designer), Yoshito Asari (assistant character designer), Yuko Miyamura (voice of Asuka), and Megumi Hayashibara (voice of Rei).
The next part of the chapter has illustrated messages from various writers/artists. Finally, some pictures that aren't already in the graphic novels! Check out this message from Kazuya Tsurumaki (assistant director for the Evangelion TV series, director for the first half of The End of Evangelion, and one of the directors for the New Theatrical Edition - AKA "Rebuild" - movies):
Tumblr media
What a cute drawing of Asuka!
All right, I'll show one more illustrated message from this section. This is from Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou (the writer and the artist for the manga Deadman Wonderland):
Tumblr media
Wow, Rei and Evangelion Unit-01 look pretty cool in that art style!
The book's fifth chapter is "Comic EVA History", and it shows Evangelion-related covers for various issues of Monthly Shounen Ace magazine and Young Ace magazine (the chapters of Sadamoto's Evangelion manga were originally published in Monthly Shounen Ace, and then starting in the summer of 2009 the remaining chapters were published in Young Ace). This part of the book also has pictures of some Evangelion-related bonus goodies that could be obtained with those magazines, such as posters, cards, and stickers.
And finally, the sixth chapter of the book is called "Extra Part", which includes notes for some of the terminology used in the manga, such as "LCL" and "entry plug". Then the book ends with a short psychology test to see which of the Children you are most in sync with.
Overall, I don't really recommend Shin Seiki Evangelion Koushiki Guide Book. It's supposed to be a guide to Sadamoto's Evangelion manga, but it was released before the last two volumes of the manga came out, so the information is not complete. Also, most of the illustrations are smaller versions of images that you can already see by simply reading the manga, so it isn't even all that great as an art book. It just feels like a cash grab. There are much better Evangelion books out there, so I would say don't bother with this one unless you're a serious collector who wants to obtain as many Evangelion-related publications as possible. Anyway, that's just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
Well, that’s it for my sixty-seventh Evangelion book review. I have plenty more Evangelion books to discuss, so keep checking my blog for new reviews!

Good Eva Screencaps
Tumblr media
I don’t want to badger my friend with any more infodumping for tonight so I’m just gonna post my eva ramblings here. These are all from episode 9!
Anyway, there are so many good shots in eva, especially the early episodes where the tone was still relatively comedic.
More under the cut.
Tumblr media
Shinji with googly eyes. That is all.
Tumblr media
I love the times when eva goes off model. Asuka’s giant face is just so goddamn hilarious.
Tumblr media
I totally forgot that Misato and Rei canonically spent some time together, however short it may be!
Tumblr media
There is so much going on in this shot. SO much attention to detail! Nobody’s standing idly by. Asuka has her trademark smug & indignant expression, Shinji’s curiously peeking outside the door, Toji’s talking to Misato while gesturing back to the chaos behind him, and Kensuke & Hikari and showing their horror at the situation in their own ways.
Tumblr media
There’s much detail in this shot too. Hikari is holding Pen-Pen, and she later adopts him in episode 23 or 24 iirc. Rei is reading or writing on something on the clipboard (homework, maybe?) Misato is watching Shinji & Asuka train, and Kensuke & Toji are just listening to Misato.
Tumblr media
Misato’s “Oh really?” face in response to Asuka ranting about Shinji combined with Rei calmly putting away her homework creates an atmosphere of smugness rivaled only by Asuka herself. But honestly? On a more serious note, this scene is where the viewer starts to get an inkling of understanding that Misato doesn’t really care about Asuka that much. Instead of trying to get her to calm down, she belittles Asuka in front of her peers.
Tumblr media
Misato has two working remotes for one television, apparently. How does this work? Typically when a TV has two remotes they’re not used for the same purpose...in this case, switching channels. Wouldn’t the TV get overloaded with info and listen to only one remote or possibly neither? I wonder what channels they were fighting over anyway.
Tumblr media
Ritsuko is my favorite out of all the adults in Evangelion. Imo she’s undeniably autistic coded & in the anime she’s heavily implied to be a lesbian. I love seeing Ritsuko outside of her labcoat & in her glasses. She was designed to be the “sexy” character, so it’s cool to see her wearing dorky mid-90s glasses and no earrings.
Tumblr media
I just really like this shot. Ritskuo’s in it, for one. This is also one of the comparatively few times we see Kaji at NERV alongside Misato and Ritsuko. Of course, canon lesbian Maya is in this shot too so what’s not to love, right?
Tumblr media
I need to crop Ritsuko’s face and use it as a reaction image.
Tumblr media
Everyone’s reaction to Unit 01 & Unit 02 is great here. Kaji’s laughing, Maya’s covering her mouth while laughing, Misato & Aoba are in shock, I can’t see Hyuga’s face because of the subtitles but I’m sure it’s great, and let’s not forget Ritsuko’s iconic shoulder shrug  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tumblr media
Asuka is so powerful she punched Shinji through the phone. And he deserves it for trying to sexually assault her last night!

All the eva pilots :3c
Ohohoho
Shinji:
hate them | don’t really care | like them | LOVE them | THEY ARE MY PRECIOUS
ship with: kaworu, of course
friendship them with: uhhh rei and maybe asuka. Tho idk shinji did some fucked up shit so idk if asuka would forgive him. Also toji and kensuke
general opinions: ok so me and shinji have a complicated relationship. On one hand, he’s 14 and depressed and has to pilot a giant robot so I empathize with him on that. He obviously has confidence issues and I feel that. In a way, we are similar. But I can’t forgive the stuff shinji did in end of eva. Especially the hospital scene. So sometimes I like him but other times I’m like: fuk u.
Rei:
hate them | don’t really care | like them | LOVE them | THEY ARE MY PRECIOUS
ship with: asuka💕💕
friendship them with: kaworu and shinji
general opinions: I love rei so much!! She’s my second fav next to asuka. I feel so bad for the way the men in her life used her like an object. I feel like she and asuka have to potential to be a rly good (girl)friends. But they just never got the chance to understand each other better. In conclusion: rei is baby and I love her 💙💙
Asuka:
hate them | don’t really care | like them | LOVE them | THEY ARE MY PRECIOUS
ship with: rei💖💖 (and sometimes mari or Hikari)
friendship them with: Hikari and maybe shinji
general opinions: I LOVE ASUKA SO MUCH!!! She’s my fav eva character. I empathize with her a lot and she’s badass af. Again, I feel like her and rei could make a good couple if they learned to understand each other. Asurei is my fav ship in eva and I wish more ppl shipped it. They have so much potential!!! Anyway, I love asuka a whole lot ❤️❤️❤️
Kaworu:
hate them | don’t really care | like them | LOVE them | THEY ARE MY PRECIOUS
ship with: shinji
friendship them with: rei and uhhhh maybe asuka?
general opinions: fucking love kaworu. Absolute gay icon. His story’s really tragic too. He just wants to be with shinji but the universe keeps fucking him. He’s so pretty and cool. I haven’t read the manga yet but I look forward to it cuz I heard there’s more kaworu.
Mari:
hate them | don’t really care | like them | LOVE them | THEY ARE MY PRECIOUS
ship with: asuka
friendship them with: asuka and shinji mayhaps
general opinions: I like her. She’s pretty but I do feel like she was created to sell sexy figurines. Like, idk we don’t rly know her backstory and she kinda appeared outta nowhere. I hope we get more info on her in the next rebuild movie. She’s fun tho. And she’s cute and definitely a lesbian.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (for the meme thing 💜)
Sorry this took so long! I’m pretty rusty with my Eva, I’m afraid. ^^;
the character i least understand: I don’t know anymore. Maybe SEELE in general?
interactions i enjoyed the most: I think there’s a reason why Toji/Hikari and Shinji/Kaworu are my favourite ships. I’m also pretty fond of the smiling scene with Shinji and Rei.
the character who scares me the most: Maybe Gendo?
the character who is mostly like me: Not sure. On one hand, I’m a pretty useless adult, so I could fit right into the cast. On the other hand, I’d probably be more like an overgrown female Shinji if that was the case. >>;
hottest looks character: Misato.
one thing i dislike about my fave character: It’s not something I dislike about Rei herself, but if Anno and co. really wanted her to be unsettling to viewers and didn’t want them woobifying her, then I feel like they fell down at the first hurdle by giving her an obvious woobie moment in the very first episode. (Interpreting this question as “one of my favourites” because I have trouble settling on just one fave from Eva)
one thing i like about my hated character: Gendo has an iconic pose that makes me smile a little when I see characters do it in other canons, even if I don’t like Gendo himself.
a quote or scene that haunts me: Episode 18 stands out in a big way for me. *shudder*
a death that left me indifferent: Gendo’s in End of Eva.
a character i wish died but didn’t: Doesn’t pretty much everyone either die or turn into LCL?
my ship that never sailed: Maya/Ritsuko, forever onesided...

7 reasons why I love Utada Hikaru...
1. Her music videos
youtube
“Traveling” (2001) is one great example for an amazing music video of hers. The song is about creative energy and charting previously unknown territory. Directed by her then-husband Kazuaki Kiriya, it is one of many collaborations between the two that happened from 2001 to 2006 - basically the time of her most daring video creations. So colourful, aesthetic and energetic, the music becomes one with the visual experience in each song. “Sakura Drops” (2002), taken from the same album (”Deep River”) as “Traveling”, showcases a similarly breathtaking visual journey.
2. Her lyrics
Tumblr media
In myself, I see no dreams, like unpainted pictures how many times must I fill this canvas? I'll abandon time as I hold a white flag overhead I am your unknown color now -  COLORS
Thinking too much, don't fall into desperation A world that changes constantly feels like tricking a child When people find themselves alone They realize the meaning of love -  GOODBYE HAPPINESS
If the key is too high, it's okay to lower it the song has the strength not to change distress is only one passing point like a bracelet that's too big, things will slide into place - WAIT & SEE (RISK)
Looking up the translations for the first time has been a revelation. She writes and composes her songs all by herself (and even produces nearly all of them), making them even more heartfelt. They are about real, complex emotions, far more challenging than the usual “girl meets boy” pop song formula.
3. Her live shows
youtube
She is able to perform live like no other. Her vocals sound exactly as amazing as on the CD and she is able to constantly deliver with an amazing energy throughout a whole concert. And most of all, she can transform a song into a live bomb! While I already like the studio version of “Devil Inside” (from her English-language 2004 album “Exodus”), it is the live version that I definitely ADORE!
4. Her experimental mind
youtube
She is not afraid to venture into more experimental fields, producing songs like “Passion” (2005) (with another Kazuaki Kiriya music video) or “Kremlin Dusk” (2004). She is a hugely successful artist and somehow also manages to fit these experimental tunes in her repertoire..
5. Her joyful melodies alongside saddening themes
Tumblr media
Watch the live version of “Goodbye Happiness here
Sounding like quite a happy song with playful melodies, “Goodbye Happiness” is actually about a saddening topic. And how she delivers this in one package makes it ultimately bittersweet in a way I could just cry with a smile on my face, singing along that catchy tune.
Oo all of creation goes 'round and will go 'round Oh oh oh darling, darling No one can ever take your place Only you
6. Her Evangelion theme songs
When the reboot film series “Rebuild of Evangelion” began in 2007, Utada was asked to provide a theme song to the first installment “Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone”. Being a huge fan of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series from the 90′s, she agreed and wrote the song “Beautiful World” especially for this occasion. Lyrically very fitting to the franchise, it can be seen as another way of looking into the feelings of protagonist Shinji Hikari. Not being brave enough, yet still trying his best. The beautiful melody and atmosphere, the top-notch production, as well as the association with the anime made this my second favourite song of hers.
vimeo
After a remix of “Beautiful World” served as the theme song to the second installment “Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance” (2009), she was asked again to make a song for the third film “Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo”, released in 2012. “Sakura nagashi” breaks my heart each time I listen to it. The sorrow, the pain that the death of a beloved one that come through in this song hurts like nothing else in this world. Yet, she can present all these emotions in such a grace and beauty. I cannot find many words that would do this masterpiece of a song justice, other than that it is one of a kind and one with the world and themes of Evangelion. My very favourite song of hers.
7. Her ability to evolve
vimeo
Just a few days ago, Hikki (how her fans affectionately call her) dropped a new song, along with a music video featuring herself dancing a contemporary choreography by acclaimed dancer and choreographer Fukiko Takase. What blows me away the most is how she manages to make her melodies even more interesting the older she gets. She explores so many different harmonies, especially on her latest album “Fantôme”. While she may not be among the avant-garde in terms of arrangement and production, she is definitely able to keep her music interesting. This is very much apparent in her newest song Forevermore”, which is carried by a string arrangement (something she has perfectioned recently) and her vocals, which together give us a mesmerizingly dreamy mix.
Still, there are many more reasons why…
...like her hauntingly beautiful smash-hit “Flavor Of Life”, her iconic debut single “Automatic”, the bittersweet “Final Distance” or her ability to create an actually quite original Christmas song. The aforementioned seven at least give a good overview over why I love Utada Hikaru.

the bassist of the band that’s really big in Unova ( as well as several other places in the world ). While punk isn’t the genre Shinji listens to most often, he’s aware of Trash Compactor’s prevalence, and frankly, wouldn’t put it past Hikari to listen to them now and then. So — should he say something?
But he finds himself starstruck and frozen in place. He’s never actually gotten to see a professional musician in person. And can he even say anything? Would she want to be bothered? Plus, even with her stature, there’s an air hanging around her that makes Shinji retreat into himself.
Oh, but maybe she already saw him —
