THE MORNING LIGHT DRIFTED LAZY through the single tiny window of the Maito home’s bathroom. It scattered across the tile floor, distorted by the shutters. The bathtub was full to the brim of carefully warmed water. The doting father had kept his hand under the faucet, feeling the liquid’s degree scale upwards as it spilled across his palm. At the age his children were, the two of them could both sit in the tub. Gai had doused their heads with a small cup that he’d gotten at some festival years ago. Within the clear water, there were small toys bobbing up and down across the surface. A heavier toy boat’s hull had flooded with water, leaving the poor ship sunken at the bottom of the tub. 

Lee and Tenten were now reaching the age of four. It was a fun age, but there would still be a lot of hand holding until they were able to enroll in school. Tenten was taller than Lee and wore it as a badge of pride. Sitting in the tub, her hair was not in twin buns but instead pressed damp against her shoulders. Lee’s bowlcut looked practically the same wet as it did dry, except it was flatter against his forehead. He was looking more like Gai as the days went by, and admittedly Gai was astonished. He was sure that he might have been a cousin of some kind. Yet he was positive his clan had been assuredly destroyed by the time the most recent war had concluded save for his father and himself. Now the only members of the clan left were the three of them in that tiny bathroom; Gai was not the type to care about something as insignificant as blood relationship when it came to who was his family. 

“Alright Lee, are you ready for me to wash your hair? You’ll have to be strong and keep your eyes closed! You don’t want to hurt your magnificent eyes!” Gai squirts translucent faintly yellow shampoo onto the top of Lee’s head. His son puffs out his chest and balls his fists together, a determined pout fixing itself across his small face. “Yes!” Gai plucks a hand towel and shows it off to Lee. Despite it being a simple stretch of fabric, Lee looks at it with the reverence of a vital tool. “Your shield for extra protection! A good shinobi always has the right equipment.” Gai instructs, and Lee nods his head in understanding. Tenten rolls her eyes as she bobs a toy horse under the water. “You guys are dorks.” To emphasize her point, she brings the horse back above the water to join her judging gaze. The horse’s tiny black eyes mirrored Tenten’s judgmental gaze. 

Ino had taught her the word “dork” and had been using it as liberally as possible. Everything and everyone was a dork. The other day she tripped over a rock while they were out on a walk and sobbed about how the rock was the BIGGEST dork as Gai washed off her knee. Lee might’ve not known what it meant either ( he’d asked Tenten and her reply was pointing at him for explanation- which was mean, and made Kakashi laugh when Gai vented about it to him ), but he definitely didn’t like the word. He jabs out an arm in a frantic outward swing towards the open air. “I’m not a dork! Pa! Tell her!” Gai secures the towel across Lee’s eyes and starts to scrub in the shampoo with his other hand. He’s careful to lather his shampoo in until all the black strands are soapy and foamy. “Now Tenten, it isn’t nice to call your brother a dork. Neither him nor I are dorks! You know how Lee doesn’t like when you call him that.” Gai dips his sudsy hand in the warm water, rinsing it off before grabbing the small cup. He fills the cup and pours the water over Lee’s head, the liquid fading from white to clear with each cup full. Lee’s face was wrenched together as he closed his eyes with all his might. 

Tenten bounces the horse across the top of the water and wrinkles her nose in thought. “It’s okay to be a dork. Everyone is one. Except me. Or Ino. Or Sakura. Or Hinata. Sooooo… everyone else is a dork.” Gai was torn between pride for how cherished Tenten held her friends and exasperation that she didn’t get his point. “There we go, Lee. Ah! There you are!” Gai removes the towel from Lee’s face and finds his son’s eyes are still screwed shut. “Are your eyes stinging, Lee? I have the tow-” “No! I did it!” Lee mirrors his father’s thumbs up with a grin. Gai feels a rush of warmth blossom in his chest.
