Snapshots Masterlist
Quinn Hughes x ofc
Are Quinn Hughes and Sarah Roberts fated to be together? It seems like it. Follow their journey from a spur of the moment first date to falling in love and all the good and bad in between.
These snapshots are written in whatever order strikes my fancy, but there is a loose timeline they fall into. I've listed them in both timeline and posting order. There are some timeline inconsistencies that will be edited as needed. In the meantime, let's just agree to pretend they don't exist. Also, the season the Canucks are playing in is obviously fictional and doesn't follow any actual season.
• Please be aware, this series deals with a lot of grief.
The Snapshots playlist can be found here.
Other work can be found on my Fanfiction Masterlist.
*indecates smut

a couple of more things about Lola and her injury and that night...
Jim and Ellen are in Vancouver for the game. They were not about to miss their eldest and youngest first head to head match in the big leagues.
So they were there to see their baby not bounce back like she normally does. They watched as the trainer crouched down to assess the damage done. And they definitely panicked when trainer's gloved fist shot up in the air indicating they were in need of more help and an ambulance.
"Jim" Ellen mumbled, eyes glued on her baby. She would have been frozen in her seat if it hadn't been for her husband practically pushing her out of it.
"Ellen go. She's going to need her mom." Jim Hughes instructed his wife. He gave her a quick squeeze, trying to let her know that it will be okay. "I'll be there when I can"
Ellen ran to entrance where the ambulance was as fast as she could hoping to make it before it left. The sight of Lola strapped to the back board, unable to move, her eyes bouncing from person to person nearly broke her heart.
"Mommy my head hurts." Lola incoherently slurred her words when her eyes landed on her mother.
"I know baby, I know" The mother held her daughter's hand momentarily while she was being loaded into the emergency vehicle.
The crowd roared, chanting her name in support for the injured Duck as she was being taken off. At some point Quinn found his legs, making his way to Lola. He tapped her boot with his gloved handed and followed behind them.
Mason wouldn't stop, his fingers had to be pried off the guy's black jersey. By the time he was stopped he had managed to break the guy's nose. He was being ejected from the game for the fight and his behavior.
"Did you accomplish what you wanted to?" another one of the Duck's medical staff, who wasn't attending to Lola, asked him while she was bandaging his bruised and cracked knuckles.
"No" His head twitched again. His anger was making the tics worse, but the were nothing he could do about that.
"They'll fine you, or worse suspend you for a couple of games" the staff member pinned the end of the wrap, finishing his care.
"I don't care"
Luke and Jack had won their game hours earlier and were out celebrating with teammates, they didn't see any part of the game at all. It wasn't until someone mentioned hearing about Lola that Jack had the thought to check the score.
By that time the game was over and the Canucks had won 3 to 1. Smugly Jack sent some text teasing Lola about the Ducks' loss. The message went unread by everyone aside from Luke who responded with a haha.
Jack was woken up sometime in the wee hours of the morning by a phone call from Quinn.
"She'll, she'll be fine, Jack. The doctors said she'll be fine. It's just a concussion." The oldest Hughes child started rattling off other things the doctors at the hospital had told them.
"What are you talking about Q?" Jack groggily said. He pulled his phone away from his ear taking not of time as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.
"Clem, the hit."
"The what now?" Jack was now scrambling to get out of his bed. He burst into Luke's room not caring about his little brother's privacy for one second.
Luke hadn't been able to sleep since they got home. He didn't know if was the few beers he had that he wasn't supposed to or if it was the adrenaline from the win, but he found himself on his phone scrolling through highlights when he stumbled on Lola's hit.
"Oh my god" Luke showed Jack the video while he put Quinn on speaker. The oldest brother reiterated what he had said before. It was just a concussion, a bad one.
"I'm gonna kill him"
"Pretty sure McTavish already did"
"I'll do it again"
"No you wont"
"Try me"
"I want to see Bah." Luke insisted over one of the many video calls he had with his parents. He felt like a little kid when they couldn't get the one thing they wanted.
"Luke, she's resting. We need to let her be for now."
Out of the two middle kids, Luke was the more concern and scared one. Not to say that Jack wasn't disturbed by what happened. It's just Bah is his little sister, his best friend, his baby.
The last time he was this worried about Bah was when he was fifteen and she had run away because of Jack, but it wasn't Jack's fault this time. So he had to wait until December 5th before he could really do anything about it.
The Ducks were slated to return to Anaheim later that night, but Lola stayed in Vancouver. The doctors wanted to observe her for a couple of days before letting her go, making sure she didn't have a brain bleed or anything that would have presented itself later.
Thankfully nothing else happened and she returned to California a couple of days later.
"Mrs. Hughes, I can take care of her." Mason insisted.
"Mason please call me Ellen. Lola is my daughter, I have no problem doing this stuff." She had taken care of a whiny Quinn earlier in the year when he got his tonsils out, this was going to be nothing. "Plus who's gonna be with her when you leave for a trip?"
"Trevor and Jamie?"
"Do you really trust them to do that?"
"Honestly? No." The two laughed in mutual agreement. Ellen liked this kid, she could see why Lola did too.
Jamie and Trevor ended up staying with Lola for a couple of days when the Ducks have a small two game road trip and Ellen went back to Vancouver for the Devils/Canucks game.
Also Robbie did try and see her when she got back to Cali, but Mason was always there to deter him from actually seeing her. Until one road trip and Ellen let him in.

can you elaborate on y/n getting robbed at gunpoint from Barzy and Ivy's story? how Mat reacted to the news at the time etc?
trigger warning; discussion of the use of g*ns! & miscarriage
-
Mat was at home after the game when he got a call from Nico.
Nico told him that you’d been hurt on the train and that you were at hospital in Jersey, he had been called down and ask that he come straight away.
Mat’s heart was in his throat as he made his way to the hospital.
When he arrived they took him straight to your room. You were hooked up to multiple machines aiding you to breathe.
Mat gasped lowly and sat at your bedside.
“Mr Barzal” a voice came from the doorway. He turned to see a police officer urging him to come out.
Mat stood and walked to him, hands rubbing on his jeans.
“What happened?!” Mat asked, looking at the notebook the police officier held.
“Your wife, she was robbed on the train this evening. The robbers held her at gunpoint while they searched through her purse and bags witnesses say. We have been led to believe that it was your wife specifically chosen due to her wedding ring which we managed to recover and you’ll be able to get that back in twenty-five days after processing”
Mat swallowed hard and nodded “Did you catch the guy?”
“We did, sir and we will get your wife down to the station when she’s fit to do so and give a little further detail”
“Thanks officer”
When the police left the doctor found Mathew and stopped him
“How’s my wife?”
“Your wife is going to be fine sir” she affirmed and he let out a breath of relief before she continued “However I do have to let you know that your wife’s pregnancy did not survive the trauma and she is currently going through a miscarriage. We will have someone in shortly to discuss with you both the next steps and any support available”
Mat stumbled back, feeling the wind being knocked out of him. He gripped onto the wall next to him for support while he tried to regulate his breathing.
You’d just found out last week that you were having a little girl at a gender reveal that Sydney insisted on throwing you. You were so excited to become a mom. You were bickering about names and now that was all gone.
Mat sat at your bedside for the night, holding your hand. At some point around three in the morning you woke and Mathew alerted the nurses who took out your breathing tubes.
Mat held your hand and stroked your cheek “My girl, god I thought I’d lost you”
“can’t get rid of me that easy” you joked “how’s the… how’s our girl? huh? did they do a scan to check everything was ok?”
mat’s eyes softened “the baby… honey, they said she doesn’t have a heartbeat”
“No.. no!” You mumbled, ripping your hands away from him.
“Babe…”
“No! No.. mat no!”
Tears began running down both of your faces
“our baby girl” you mumbled, voice breaking.
Mat held you, rocking you back and forth “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry my love”
The news completely rocked your world for months. You didn’t go back to work for the devils for the rest of the season and Mat took time off to take care of you.
You moved home, refusing to step foot in the room you’d decorated as her bedroom.
You didn’t think you’d ever want kids any longer. Until one day in the off season you were in Vancouver and you approached Mat
“I think I’m ready to try again”

Tumblr media
Introduction
Kiltro is an indie latin folk rock project created by Chilean-American musician Chris Bowers Castillo while working as a walking tour guide in Valparaíso, a formerly prosperous port city northwest of Santiago, Chile. After the opening of the Panama Canal, the city transformed into an elusive haven of bohemians and stray dogs - or "quiltros", Chilean slang for "mutt". Inspired by the liminal nature of Valparaíso, Chris wrote a series of short stories that would later evolve into the material of the band, using the symbol of the stray dog as both a metaphorical vehicle and an empowering term for his mixed identity and music, ultimately naming the band after them. Subsequently, he would reunite with an old college friend, Will Parkhill, who would go on to join as the band's bassist, alongside Michael Devincenzi as their drummer. Together, they would shape the sound of Kiltro, reanimating Chris's stories into the mysterious characters, melodic allure, and intangible soundscapes that comprise and lurk beneath their debut album Creatures of Habit. Later on, affected by the quarantine, the band took a more introspective approach, deciding to use cats as a motif for their sophomore record, Underbelly, inspired by their solitary and contemplative nature. Around this time, Fez García joined the band as a second percussionist for concerts, completing the lineup as we know it today. (Carroll, 2019) (Mitchell, 2023) Info sourced from: Carroll, E. Q (regulus_di): What's the best show the band has ever had, or alternatively the most special?
WILL: the last run of tour had the most special shows in a while, especially the navy pier in Chicago, Vienna, and Brooklyn. The growth and excitement has been extremely exciting to see.
CHRIS: The show on the staircase outside of a friend’s restaurant, in Valparaiso, Chile.
MICHAEL: the shows in which there are zero expectations about the city have been the best. Every time we arrive in a town that we know nothing about, we are blown away by the hospitality that we receive. Towns like Columbus, Phoenix, Richmond, Vienna, and Detroit come to mind.
FEZ: can’t decide. He says it’s like asking him what his favorite meal of all time is, “they all filled my tum tum” 😂
SOUND CREW: the Hollywood theater in Vancouver, BC, and Baby’s Alright in NY have sounded the absolute best From Chris's favorite show 😱
youtube
Q (goodman873): Chris solo album?
A: Currently the focus is Kiltro, if a song is written that seems out of place for the current state of the project, it’s often left on the shelf to return to at another time. There are a handful of songs that were planned for Underbelly that ultimately didn’t make it onto the final version for one reason or another, the possibility of them being included on a future album always exists. If a song appears that categorically falls outside of the vision of the band, then a solo project might be considered, but the ultimate goal is to experiment and push musical boundaries.
Q (evantheblank): Favorite unreleased / scrapped song, and is it planned to be available at some point?
A: There are tons of demos that have silly working titles, some of the songs that make it into the final version often don’t have a legitimate name until close to the end of the writing process.
CHRIS: the song Alpaca that was written as the same time as Guanaco, different energy but in the same vein and style. Never played live
WILL: Sin Salida that was included in an Instagram reel with a bunch of Super 8 footage
MICHAEL AND FEZ: Tambach
Q (allisawr): Any plans to record a live album?
THE BAND: we try to capture every show 😉
SOUND CREW: We are currently multitrack recording every live show for reference purposes and our personal archives. If a particular recording stands out, then it will be heavily considered for a live release.
Q (syd1288): What's with the cover art of Creatures of Habit?
A: The cover was a collaborative piece done by Markus Puskar and Julian Brier, heavily inspired by the work of M.C. Escher
The songs on CoH have a lot to do with the monotonous liminal spaces in our everyday lives, and the lyrics are very character driven. The art is meant to invoke the illusion of a society that feels like it is going in loops and circles, in which we are becoming “creatures of habit.”
Q (regulus_di): What games are the guys into atm/pre-tour?
A: We love to play giant jenga and a card game called “Hanabi,” we also invented a pool game called “twenty ball” in which Will is the (heavily disputed) champion.
Chris is currently working through another play through of Dark Souls, he’s been tearing through it on the switch in the van. We’ve also played The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and a lot of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Stardew Valley and Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic are also big hits on the iPad.
Q (kalamaroe): What inspired the visuals in the If I Lead music video? I've always found it very hypnotising
A: Generally the band doesn’t like to be too specific with the meaning of the artistic content and likes to leave it more to interpretation from the audience. At the time that the video was shot, the band was interested in experimenting with old school classroom projectors, spinning images, double exposures in Will’s photography, and super 8 film footage. The goal was to add visual content to live shows, and a lot of the footage came from that effort.
youtube
youtube
Here’s some behind the scenes footage from that video courtesy of Will 😱
youtube
Q (happidragon): What are the band members' favorite songs to perform?
WILL: it’s hard to pin down and is always changing based upon each performance, but Guanaco is always up there
CHRIS: it really depends on the show, Softy has been a favorite recently because of how dynamic it is, and Lovers of death is another that has been a longtime standard in the sets for that same reason.
MICHAEL: Underbelly, Softy and Lovers of death are all favorites. The dynamics and drum progression allows for a lot of exploration in each performance.
FEZ: Crazy because of the shaker and wood blocks, there are a lot of fun little percussion parts
SOUND CREW: Errasuriz is the most fun to mix, and is always right in the middle of the set when we really have things dialed in.
Q (gumibearheart): How do you guys approach music and the moving parts of it?
A: The writing process is slightly different for each song but tends to coalesce in a similar way, with lyrics typically coming later on in the process. Many songs that start as musical loops get jammed on in rehearsal and recorded as practice demos, the most exciting material eventually evolves into something worth returning to.
Q (starfunkbonnibel): What has been your approach in connecting all these sounds with the themes and stories of your songs? And are there any plans to do one continuous narrative in an album?
CHRIS: I think the soundscapes and by extension the “story” comes from whatever I’m interested in or experiencing at the time of writing. I start in one place, whether it’s a chords progression or an interesting ambient loop, and move in whatever direction feels most compelling and true. I find that a lot of ideas begin to link together because I tend to cycle back on ideas multiple times throughout the process. Because I’m working it out for myself. That goes for sounds, samples and progressions too. Overarching themes or the recurring “character” of the sounds and the places they evoke emerge as the process goes on, and in that is often a kind of story. Or many stories in a similar setting. I visualize things a lot when I’m writing.
In a sense, I think we already work “narratively,” it’s just that there’s not necessarily a script or a series of events. I’d like to make albums that exist in a specific space and create the context for meanings and patterns to emerge. Not a narrative per se. There are bands that do that well but I like to keep things more abstract.
Q (goldengoldstar): Although we know of the influence artists like Víctor Jara, Violeta Parra and Atahualpa Yupanqui have had on the music of Kiltro, are there any other artists or bands you might mention as big influences or inspirations?
A: Thanks to everyone who listens to and shares the Kiltro playlist! This is a stream of consciousness list from all the guys in the band in no particular order: Manu Chao, Deerhunter, Devendra Banhart, Ween, Talking Heads, Jorge Ben, Radiohead, Damon Albarn, Thelonious Monk, Damu the Fudgemunk, Moses Sumney, Animal Collective, John Coltrane, Boards of Canada, Chico Trujillo, OutKast, Teke Teke, Travel Kit, New Order, Kraftwerk, Stereolab, Broadcast, Jack Canaan, Charles Mingus, Sonic Youth, Polo y Pan, Andrew Bird, Marvin Gaye, Metronomy, Sade, YĪN YĪN, Fela Kuti, Tortoise, Cocteau Twins, Air, and Erlend Øye.
Q (goldengoldstar): Are there any plans to play in Latin America?
A: No plans currently, but it’s definitely a long-term goal
Q (starfunkbonnibel): What are your favorite moments of experimentation during the making of Underbelly?
KYLE: During the production/recording process of Curicó (being one of the first songs Chris, Will, and I dove into, if I remember correctly) I was in the studio with Chris focusing on the song’s momentum. I believe this may have been before real drums were put down? Idk, can’t completely remember… but my goal in that session was to add excitement and some kind of uplifting drive to the song. In one moment, I was trying to think of a way to show Chris how we “could” add a particular energy to the song to see if he liked the idea/direction. I decided to give Chris an example by grabbing a shitty/lofi mic and shouting “HEY! HEY! HEY!.. etc” into the mic along with what we had recorded so far. And I was like, “that’s the kinda of energy I’m thinking we can add,” and then Chris was basically like… we should just keep that hahahaha. In that moment I personally felt like we or I at least had figured out a key to the energy of that song, and also my creative flow with Chris, Will, and so forth going forward. Not to mention the beginning of a great friendship 🙂 this was fun to write about! Thanks to everyone here for being a part of their music ✨🐕 This wasn’t about Underbelly, but it’s what the question made me think of lol sorry But still fits a vibe of how I think we all have fun working together on all the music 🙂
Thank you for reading! Event managed by: Kamsthetics , MartixArtist, GoldenGoldstar, and StarfunkBoogie / @starfunkbonnibel. Transcript revised by: plantboyfriend / @plumerii Format inspired by silvershr0ud_'s interview

that skater au gave me brain worms so. just. take whatever this is. I'm so tired.
John
started figure skating young
his dad was a genial and well respected business manager at a rink in Washington sponsored by the prestigious Skaianet Systems Inc, which brought major players like the vaulted Roxanne Lalonde to Olympic gold stardom
he's just a decent man though, trying to support his family
he brought John to the rinks sometimes and taught him to skate just for fun
however, John soon started showing a prodigious talent for it, and Dad Egbert was so so proud of him for it
John liked skating well enough at the time, and was kind of hoping that maybe if he took up skating his dad would axe the whole harlequin thing
(which he did)
(mostly)
at sixteen, after winning a few pretty impressive medals in the junior category, John was ready to call it quits and retire the professional skates
Tragically, however, it was around this time that James "Dad" Egbert, who had always been so supportive of John's skating, died very suddenly.
John grieves in a very particular way. He often gets (home)stuck in a version of denial which often looks like radical acceptance.
He is in fact actually very fucked up right now.
Vriska Serket, a young and notorious athlete turned coach who John had been working with for the last year or so at that time, pulls a Vriska, and hamfists John back into skating.
With her guidance, John becomes one of THE top US figure skaters, and at age 21 is ready for his second foray into the Olympic scene.
The winter Olympics are in less than a year, and John has taken up training in Vancouver...
Dirk
took up street hockey as a teen in his home town of Houston, Texas with his kid brother Dave, who said it was the height of irony to play a winter sport in the hottest place this side of satans tight asshole
Dave never liked it as much as Dirk did though
probably because Dave liked not fainting from heat stroke
I know, Dave is so weird
It got them out of that apartment though.
... (<- Bro silence being very loud)
Anyway
At 16, Dirk got scouted by a pale man in a suit working for a company called Abraxas, which he said was looking for young athletes to sponsor. <- very believable
That's very rude. I never lie.
And please, call me Doc Scratch.
Is it normal for traveling salesmen to have doctorates?
Oh it's not a title, though I imagine it would be very easy for me to acquire one. Haa haa, hee hee.
...
Things got very messy and horrible very quickly.
Events culminated in an extremely high profile law suit, where Dirk and many other athletes were represented by the Pyrope Firm to take down Abraxas, Doc Scratch, and his boss Lord English (H3'S SO PR3T3NTIOUS, UGH) and to free them all from their horrifying contracts
Pyrope won.
For now.
At age 18, Dirk had a scandal behind him, a kid brother to take care of beside him (the Bro silence got quieter), and a veritable mountain of legal reparations ($$$) to get him into any college he wanted.
...
dude, just go to the hockey school
I could support you better with a law degree.
After Dave had to go to the hospital due to the force of his laughing fit giving him a hernia, Dirk decided to go to the hockey school.
He joins the team there, and does well enough to get into the Big Leagues once he graduates with a combob philosophy/comp sci degree.
the Big Man. he is you
Dave, despite having a literal athlete brother, still has no idea how sports work.
And neither do I, so just assume that Dirk does really well and gets on a good team and is very normal about everything.
He is especially normal when, at age 24, he has to move to Vancouver, Canada since he got swapped to a different team and Dave doesn't come with him.
DUN DUN DUUUUUUUn
Bonus notes
Rose is John's friend who is also a figure skater. She's got a very turbulent relationship with her mother, former Olympic skater Roxanne Lalonde, which drags down her genuine love for skating with the weight of legacy.
John and Dave are internet friends who don't know each other's last names, and while John knows a lot about Dave's life, he keeps his own private.
Dirk started playing hockey not for the ironies like Dave thought but because his online friend Jake said he thought hockey players were cool, and Dirk had a crush on him.
Dirk and Jade went to the same college (she was home schooled and started college early) and took a robotics class together for two semesters. They're still friends to this day, though Jade actually is an engineer now.
Guess where she's interning.
(Psst, it's Skaianet)
Vriska stopped being a skater after a string of incidents involving two other former skaters and a lawyer, which resulted in her being banned from ever competing again. One is now in a wheelchair and the other quit the ice skating thing completely. Ghosted it, if you will. wonk.
Aradia is a roller derby skater, and she is incredibly hot. She might show up in the hypothetical actual fic i write for this au. Because I love her.
Me being me i'll probably find a way to include everybody else in this au, but for now, that's all. Ta.

British Columbia has announced new supports to help hire and train more nurses and midwives in order to take pressure off the strained health-care system.
Premier David Eby said the new measures will support Canadian-trained nurses who want to get back into the workforce, as well as internationally trained nurses looking to practise in B.C.
"There are highly skilled and experienced nurses who want to get to work in our system now but are facing barriers preventing them from delivering services that British Columbians need," Eby said during a news conference at Langara College in Vancouver on Monday.
For Canadian-trained nurses, the government will offer financial support of up to $4,000 to cover applications, assessments and eligible travel costs for current nurses to re-enter the system. There will also be up to $10,000 in bursaries for any additional education they might need to get back to work. [...]
Last week, Health Minister Adrian Dix said the demand for hospital care in B.C. is rising. More than 10,000 people were in acute care across the province as of Thursday, up six per cent from New Year's Eve.
On Monday, the province reactivated 20 hospital emergency operations centres previously set up for COVID-19 to manage an expected spike in cases of flu, RSV and the novel coronavirus. [...]

Raj was probably insane for doing this. In fact, he wasn’t even sure if he was going to make it to the hospital and anyone that knew him would probably tell him he was crazy for even attempting to make it to Vancouver General at this time of night when there was a citywide power outage like no one had ever seen before. But still, he couldn’t just sit around and pretend like he wasn’t responsible for the lives in that building who were wondering what in the world was happening. He was sitting in idle traffic waiting for someone to move when the hoots and hollers of literal jackasses caught his attention and beyond them a familiar establishment. “HEY!” he shouted, “I’m calling the cops right now and I’ve got this recorded!” He was lying of course, but it was enough to deter the vandals. The bookshop looked so still and quiet, but he had to make sure they hadn’t managed to take or damage anything beyond the glass of the front door. “Hello?...” he called out cautiously, pressing the lock bottom on his car which was thankfully in sight should any of those hooligans return.

Meet: Prince Siegfried of Vancouver
Tumblr media
faceclaim: herman tømmeraas
Siegfried, a 6th generation Ventrue, holds the position of Prince in Vancouver, where he exercises absolute rule over the city and its supernatural inhabitants. He commands respect and wields an immense amount of influence that extends far beyond the boundaries of Vancouver itself.
Siegfried's tenure as Prince of Vancouver has been characterized by the maintenance of a delicate peace between the vampire clans and the "taming" of the Garou, the werewolf tribes in the region.
However, recent events surrounding the breaking of the Covenant by the Garou have created ripples of uncertainty. Some princes may interpret this breach as a sign of a potential reevaluation of their loyalty and obligations. The shifting dynamics in Vancouver and the potential for power struggles among the princes may challenge Siegfried's authority.
Havens
Siegfried maintains multiple havens throughout Vancouver, but his favorite resides in the catacombs beneath the Vancouver General Hospital. This secluded and well-guarded haven offers both security and proximity to a vital location in the city, allowing him to stay informed and maintain control over important resources.
Tumblr media
History
In life, Siegfried was a Visigoth chieftain at the age of 22 who played a pivotal role in defeating the Roman emperor's army and initiating the Germanic invasions. Impressed by Siegfried's vigor and intellect, a former Roman consul named Regulus offered him the gift of eternal life, turning him into a vampire. Initially unaware of the implications of his transformation, Siegfried later discovered his new nature and, consumed by rage and confusion, diablerized his sire. This act of Diablerie marked him as a criminal and subjected him to centuries of pursuit by the Roman Ventrue until he managed to gain formal recognition within his own Clan.
Disenchanted by the intricate web of Cainite politics, Siegfried chose a nomadic existence, rarely settling in one domain for long. During his travels, he encountered Hrothulf, a fellow member of the same Clan and barbarian heritage. At Hrothulf's urging, Siegfried decided to journey to England. In London, he witnessed the execution of the Tremere Marius Drake and his progeny Julie Foster. Moved by a sense of kinship, Siegfried intervened, saving Julie at the cost of being subjected to the Blood Hunt. Together, they fled across the Atlantic to the New World. Here, free from the machinations of other Kindred, Siegfried experienced a newfound sense of liberation. Wandering across the continent, he eventually settled in Granville, the future site of Vancouver.
Maintaining vigilance against the numerous Lupines (werewolves) in the area, Siegfried and his lover subtly influenced the local mortals, leading to the expansion of the small logging town into one of Canada's largest cities. Consequently, Siegfried perceives himself not only as the Prince of Vancouver but also as its founder, patriarch, and greatest benefactor. Initially welcoming all new Kindred, Siegfried soon realized that an excessive vampire presence would only invite conflict. When the first Anarchs arrived, bringing with them dissension and violence, Siegfried assumed the mantle of Prince in the 1940s. Declaring Vancouver neutral ground for all sects, he established stringent laws that consolidated political power in his hands while still adhering to the framework of the Traditions. Neither the Camarilla nor the Sabbat challenged him, recognizing the risks and costs associated with engaging in a conflict within Lupine territory.
Tumblr media
During this period, Siegfried was saved from Final Death at the claws of the Lupines by Marcus Vitel, who claimed a Life Boon in return. Half a century later, Vitel would choose to embrace Misery, who had been groomed as Siegfried's childe. Despite this turn of events, she retained her training as a Ventrue until Vitel returned to claim her after her education was complete.
Siegfried's fame reached legendary proportions when he established the Covenant, a "peace treaty" between the local Kindred and the Lupines. Under the Covenant, the werewolves agreed to protect his domain from intruders and refrain from unprovoked violence against the vampires Siegfried pledged to shield. However, the Covenant was actually secured through coercion, as Siegfried held a sacred artifact of the werewolves hostage. His rule became so secure that he abolished most traditional positions of power within the domain, consolidating all authority in himself.
Maintaining the fragile peace was crucial to Siegfried's reputation. However, a minor rival, the Ventrue Stalest Coursain, conspired with the Lupine Shadow Lord known as Guttooth to incite conflict between the two factions. Additionally, Siegfried unknowingly encountered mages from the Syndicate, who had become corrupted by the Wyrm and collaborated with Pentex. The strain on the Covenant intensified in the late 1990s when a Glass Walker representative named Roger Daly was murdered by technocrats from the Syndicate, and a casino was constructed atop a dormant Pit, releasing several Banes into the world. The Covenant finally collapsed in 2023 during a casino robbery, as the Glass Walker tribe of werewolves successfully reclaimed their sacred fetish, the Rune of Gaia, which had been held hostage by Siegfried and his court for decades.
Siegfried's current whereabouts and status remain unknown, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over his fate.

**trigger warnings for death, birth complications, fostering and adoption trauma, drug abuse, addiction
In late July of 1994, Malachi Santos took his first breath in the back of a truck in downtown Vancouver. His mother, a seventeen-year-old runaway addicted to cocaine, had gotten a ride just the day before with a man in a Ford F-150 while hitchhiking west from Edmonton. They had just crossed within the city’s limits when Serena went into precipitous labor and managed to terrify the man driving the truck into agreeing when she shouted at him not to take her to the hospital, where they would be legally obligated to contact the foster parents she’d just escaped from — instead, he found a Walmart parking lot and folded down his back seats. An hour and a half in, however, he got spooked as Serena became less and less responsive in between contractions; Malachi was born five minutes before they reached the hospital, and Serena died from blood loss ten minutes after that as they were rushing her into the emergency room. Because of the drugs in her system and the premature birth, Mal had to be kept at the hospital for a couple weeks, and after being determined unfit to continue fostering, he wasn’t returned to the couple his mom had run away from.
Mal spent the next tumultuous half a decade in Vancouver’s foster system until finally getting adopted by Frank and Linda Holmes — two vibrant actors with a love for giving back to the community and another adopted son they’d already had for five years. They had gone into the adoption process for the second time with the idea of making the next one a girl, but neither could resist the challenge Mal presented when they met him and were given warnings by the adoption agency that he was a difficult child. So Malachi Santos became Malachi Holmes, and for many children, it would have been the proverbial jackpot: the Holmes family was warm and welcoming and decently wealthy to boot, but even at five years old Mal didn’t feel like he fit into it. One of the most difficult parts for him — though he never really understood why, especially when he was younger — was that this wasn’t a foster home this time but an adoptive family, and one that seemed determined to make him feel like he’d been cast in a weird sitcom every time they dressed up for Renaissance faires or as Mr. and Mrs. Clause for Christmas.
On paper they were good parents was the thing, and Dec was a good brother, it was just that by the time he hit eleven or twelve, the imposter syndrome coloring his entire home life solidified into its own identity; he felt like the black sheep not only in his home dynamic but in a much grander, cosmic sense that, in his mind, put him on one side of the proverbial fence and everybody else on the other. He was not unfriendly in school so much as deeply introverted and on some level uninterested in other people, except for two friends he made in sixth grade and stayed friends with through high school.
He’s the kind of person who has plenty of friends he chills with but those two are his homies and he’s crazy hard to get close to because he’s not interested in expanding that circle. He really doesn’t have a lot of ambition and has no grand plans with his music, in spite of knowing somewhere deep down he might actually like to. He started playing around with mixing in high school and still does that and uploads his stuff to SoundCloud and everything, he’s got a great ear for music and really enjoys doing it, but the idea of making a career out of it freaks him out pretty badly. Besides that, he works at a local pizza joint where he’s close with the family who owns it, and he’s happy (or, at least, satisfied) doing that as long as it makes ends meet.

My name is Andrea and this blog is meant to document and support my journey as I take the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program.
I am a Red Seal Chef with 25 years experience working in Hospitality. I spent my career working my way up the ranks at several of Vancouvers’ elite private member clubs. During the Covid 19 Pandemic I was laid off from my job. Like so many others, I was forced to pivot in order to salvage the career I spent decades building. Loosing my job was devastating at the time but also one of the best things that could have happened. I love working with students and sharing my knowledge and experience. I am excited to learn how to be an effective mentor and facilitator.
I recently started working as a Relief Instructor in the Culinary Program at Vancouver Island University and the PIDP is a requirement of my position and I am excited to get started.
Trends in my Field
https://monitormag.ca/articles/tipping-point-pandemic-forced-restaurant-and-bar-workers-into-better-paying-jobs-2/
As demand for cooks goes up as restaurants, hotels, and tourism industries are reopened the pool of trained and skilled kitchen workers needs to be replenished. We need to be able to attract more people to the industry, which means the industry has to become more attractive.
One of the biggest trends in the field of Food and Beverage Service industry is the labour shortage. Even before the pandemic it was becoming increasingly more difficult to recruit and fill positions at all levels in the kitchen. This was true for me when I was a hiring manager at a few different properties. There was always a position to fill. Why was is so hard? The rising cost of living in the lower mainland is certainly a factor. The Food service industry is known for its variable schedules, long hours, lower wages, high pressure and hectic environments and a militaristic hierarchy with in the Kitchen brigade. When I was accepted as an apprentice one of my mentors said “It’s not easy and it’s not supposed to be”. He was right! Since the pandemic, most of the underlying issues behind the labour shortage were exasperated. In 2020 the pandemic forced the food service industry to completely change everything about their business operations in order to adapt and comply with the ever-evolving restrictions. Employees who were laid off were faced with a choice; find another job in the field and live with the instability or move on from the industry altogether. This was choice I was faced with at the height of the pandemic. So many Food and Beverage workers have found other jobs in unrelated industries and pool of trained and skilled labour that employers in the service industry draw upon to fill positions has been vastly depleted. Employers are having to invest more effort into their recruitment, not only increase wages and improve benefit packages, but offer more flexibility in scheduling, as well as offer learning experiences and professional development in order to compete and retain labour. Employers will also need to communicate with consumers as they will ultimately be the ones footing the bill. I think it’s important for the consumer to understand why it is more expensive to dine out, that these funds are going toward improving employee compensation and benefits, not necessarily into the employer’s pocket. Ultimately, the food industry needed this paradigm shift. The pendulum is swinging in favour of the employee in a way that is unprecedented in the food service industry.

Lynn Valley Care Centre hoaxer pleads guilty to obstruction of justice
Tumblr media
A man convicted Jan. 27 of holding a man against his will in Richmond, and using weapons to coerce the victim to commit bestiality, pleaded guilty Tuesday to obstruction of justice.
In B.C. Supreme Court before Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes, Taymour Aghtai, 28, waived his right to a trial. He will be sentenced May 5.
After Holmes read the charge against Aghtai, he agreed that he used threats, bribes or other corrupt means in a bid to persuade another person, whose name is covered by a publication ban, to not testify at his trial. The offences happened between Jan. 19, 2021 and April 13, 2021.
“As I understand it, you were in custody at the time and you made phone calls to your mother and, essentially, asked her to relay messages, either directly or indirectly to [the witness]. Is that correct?
“Yes,” Aghtai said.
"And the purpose of your doing that was to try to cause [the witness] not to testify in the trial.”
about:blank
“Yes,” he said.
At trial, Holmes heard that once Aghtai arrived at the apartment near the Richmond Olympic Oval on Sept. 4, 2020, he hit the victim on the head from behind, and restrained him with handcuffs and zap straps. The victim testified that Aghtai and others assaulted and humiliated him over the course of 30 hours until he escaped. The man testified that Aghtai “was not the main aggressor, but played a very significant role,” Holmes said in her verdict.
Aghtai denied the charges, but Holmes found the evidence showed beyond a reasonable doubt that Aghtai kept the man restrained physically and sometimes used threats and intimidation against the victim.
Holmes found Aghtai guilty of sexual assault with a weapon, assault with a weapon, extortion, unlawful confinement and use of an imitation firearm in relation to the unlawful confinement.
Aghtai had known the victim since they were teenagers and was in the business of buying and selling merchandise from his home.
Aghtai was also sentenced Feb. 7 in North Vancouver Provincial Court to time served for public mischief and conveying a false message with intent to alarm.
He had pleaded guilty in December 2021 to making 63 malicious crank calls to four managers, six nurses and two administrators at the Lynn Valley Care Centre early in the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
He also pleaded guilty to a hoax phone call to a Parksville Fields store and RCMP detachment in November 2019, claiming that a black man was shooting people in the store. Police attended and found no such incident.
Judge Patricia Janzen chastised Aghtai for putting others at risk of harm in both incidents, especially any black men near the Fields store and senior citizens and staff at the Lynn Valley Care Centre. She said the senselessness of his crime was only matched by its cruelty.
“Your criminal record is appalling,” Janzen said.
A 2014 psychological assessment provided to the judge concluded that Aghtai was a narcissistic, anti-social alcohol abuser with psychopathic tendencies.
Aghtai has a criminal record dating back to 2008 for making hoax phone calls that falsely alleged heinous crimes or impersonated police officers. He also has a record of assault, robbery, break and enter, confinement and weapons offences, and violating court orders.
In 2020, he stole personal protective equipment from a seniors care home and escaped lawful custody at Richmond Hospital where he assaulted two corrections officers by threatening them with a contaminated syringe.

A resident of the historic Winters Hotel that burned down one year ago has filed a proposed class-action lawsuit against the City of Vancouver and a non-profit that operated the hotel as low-income housing. The Winters Hotel, which was built in 1907, was gutted by a fire on April 11, 2022. The fire was sparked by unattended candles and led to the displacement of over 70 residents. Two people — Dennis Guay and Mary Ann Garlow — were found dead, and five others had to be taken to hospital in the aftermath of the fire at the hotel, which later had to be demolished. One of the survivors is seeking costs and damages from the city and Atira Property Management, the non-profit that operated the Winters Hotel as a single-room occupancy (SRO) housing building.
