Final Blog

I struggled in the beginning of the course since I did not have any real knowledge of photography. Having broken equipment issues put me behind but also helped me to get over my fear of using the equipment. I was proud of my success that I had in overcoming this handicap and was able to find the solutions to correct the situation. It still amazes me how I continue to learn new things about digital photography and feel that I have only learned a fraction of the editing techniques that are available. Working on these last two assignments allow me to discover and explore all the many facets that lightroom has to offer. Every time I go to edit, I find a new part of the tool bar that I can use to enhance my photographs and I get so excited like I have just opened the best present in the world.

I am still challenged by having to find the precise focus on the camera lens and finding the right settings of aperture, shutter speed, and light sensitivity to capture the proper quality in my photographs. I am getting better at this, but I still feel it is a bit calculated trial and error. My composition and framing have developed to the point where I have more confidence to express myself artistically. I am excited for the future and being able to combine my new skillset in photography with the knowledge that I gain through my major in criminal justice.

Growing up in Mexico, I see the injustices of living under a social ordered system where corruption and criminal activity have become the norm. Sometimes I don’t think that many people from the United States do not understand what life is like on a daily basis in Mexico. Mexico is a country rich in culture and bright and vibrant colors that reflect in the daily lives of the citizens no matter what class or region they reside. Having the ability capture and express through a visual medium, I am learning, can be a powerful tool. I am truly glad that I took this course and hope continue merging both visual and written avenues to use in the future.

I don’t seem to gravitate back to the same artists for inspiration. However, I do look for inspiration through the internet but feel that reach assignment has been so distinct that the photographers I chose for inspiration changed accordingly. In other words, there was no pattern or consistency among them except that the majority of these artists photographed in color. For this assignment I have attached the link which provided me the inspiration for my abstract photographs.

I thought the collective group critique helped me with my final project. It made me try to get my photographs to be more cohesive and my fellow peers provided me the feedback to ensure that the photographs were conveying clear message of my vision.

Taking the perfect holiday photos

Every year around the holidays families reunite for what could potentially be the only time that year. This is an important time of the year for many families for this reason, and people take hundreds of pictures over the course of a few days in order to capture every rare moment. These photos are normally taken at poor angles and in poor lighting with the sole purpose of proving that the whole family was really together. But taking good photos that can capture memories that will last a lifetime does not have to be hard.

First, you want to make sure you have a good camera. No one ever uses a blurry or pixelated photo on a holiday card, and these photos should hold fond memories instead of being easily deleted after deciding the quality is poor. A smartphone camera will work perfectly fine. You’d be amazed how advanced those tiny cameras are nowadays. An article from Digital Camera World did research on the smartphones with the best cameras and decided that the iPhone 11 Pro is number one because of their “triple-camera array.”

The phone will only take good pictures if the lighting is good. Many homes have decent lighting, but you will get the best shots outside in the day time because of the natural sunlight. You can find some pros and cons of the different types of lighting here, which will help you decide what will work best. If you do find yourself to be in a dark situation, just turn on the flash. The faces are the most important part of the photo, so be sure to use flash so everyone is seen.

Although we all love the classic and awkward posed pictures our families make us take, nothing compares to a candid photo. Taking a candid photo allows the memory to be captured while it is happening. It can bring an entirely new perspective to the moment and make for a lovely photo.

One thing to do that will really improve holiday photos is to fill the frame. By doing this, it will eliminate negative space in the photo and allow for more focus on the subject. These will be the photos that your family will truly be impressed with, since you might have to consider shooting from a new perspective with these photos. But all these tips will make your holiday photos seem like another special gift from Santa.
