                  “From the “Dangers of Sex” to a Safe Sex Education“

        Many Filipinos lack knowledge regarding sexual activity. This has lead to many becoming young parents as well as being unaware of the signs of rape and sexually transmitted diseases. The Philippines is one of the countries with the highest birthrates. Many people do not have sufficient education or monetary status in life. Hence, people continue having sexual activities without any knowledge of how to do it safely or what the consequences are.  At the moment, most religious Filipinos and parents harshly reject the notion of integrating sexuality education into the Philippine academic curriculum due to it being against their doctrines. Mike Francis B. Ras, an 18 year old student from HU23, gave his responses to the issue. He explained that sexuality education is necessary to prevent people, especially the youth, from becoming parents at an age where they are not ready as well as spreading awareness of the consequences involved. He also mentioned the lack of parental guidance is due to the negative stigma surrounding sexuality education. Though he agreed that it should be integrated into the curriculum, he said that it should not be considered as an independent subject, rather it would be simply part of an existing subject such as science. He also emphasized that “common sense” must be utilized in order for people to think for themselves rather than continuously relying on the system.

HURRAH. Amidst the crowd’s surge of excitement as Julienne Auro of HU23 ramps on stage on February 21, 2020 at the Gymnasium, four of her classmates show their support through cheers and applause. Auro’s advocacy was sustainable development goal number five, gender equality, where she exhibited her fight for inclusiveness and equality through an outfit that represented LGBTQIA+ community.
