kind of annoying how ppl on here are just SO eager to advocate for the outright culling of all introduced (aka "invasive") species and act like anyone who is concerned for the welfare of the introduced species are painfully naive and/or PETA members (I usually see this regarding feral/outdoor cats, but w other species too)

tl;dr there's SO much more nuance when it comes to introduced animal control methods than simply a TNR/culling dichotomy, and some of you NEED to learn that reading some reactionary rants against animal rights activists doesn't make you an expert conservationist!!

Source: I'm an animal behavior & conservation master's student who recently took a class on human-wildlife conflict and wrote an 18 page term paper reviewing the massive invasive species problem in Australia, all the control methods, and the various perspectives regarding those control methods--which earned me an "It was a pleasure having you in class!" from my professor 😌

strap in lmao this is a crash course in my term paper

the longer these people rant about it the more blatantly obvious it becomes that they're just jumping to the opposite extreme from animal rights activists bc they think that makes them good environmentalists or makes them seem smart. like I GET the appeal, ofc it would be NICE to have a simple answer to managing introduced species by telling yourself "the health of the ecosystem comes before the welfare of the dirty rotten invasive species, so let's just kill them all"

but like. first of all it's almost DEFINITELY a more complicated situation than 'introduced species overpopulates and eats and/or outcompetes the native species and causes them to go extinct' (there are MULTIPLE forces at work here). second, culling is NOT always the effective cure-all you think it is!!! for ex/ culling of cane toads in australia ends up just.... making room in the ecosystem for more cane toads!! ALSO! encouraging people to go out and kill every "invasive" animal they find can often lead to NATIVE wildlife being killed accidentally, AND killing methods that are extremely painful and drawn out!

then there's the issue of animal welfare, which yes, introduced species ARE entitled to. the terminology around the discussion of how to "combat" the tides of "invasive" species only encourages us to see this situation as a war with an enemy hell-bent on destroying our ecosystem. but that's bullshit. they're literally JUST animals, which have been displaced by HUMANS, and for some reason their population ended up thriving in this new place. they aren't evil, and they DO deserve some compassion.

that said, obviously control measures often need to be taken against introduced species when they become a significant problem for the endemic species, and often TNR isn't an effective or practical method on its own. but TNR and culling aren't the ONLY control options--there are actually several control methods, each with its own levels of efficacy and welfare, each of which differs depending on the specific species and environment. these include methods like immunocontraception (high welfare, moderate efficacy), releasing species-specific viruses (extremely effective in australian rabbits, but VERY poor welfare), or hunting & trapping--for actual USE, unlike with culling (moderate-high efficacy, relatively moderate welfare if done properly)

then there's the question of whether introduced populations SHOULD be controlled, and if so, how much, and should they be completely wiped out just kept at a manageable population, etc etc etc. the concept of battling invasive species is VERY much a western preservationist (earlier trend in conservation) concept. this idea that the ecosystem would run in perfect stable harmony if not for humans (and the species we introduce around the world), and it's our moral obligation to keep the ecosystems around us EXACTLY as they were when we found them... as much as possible. but that's simply not true!! yes obviously humans have had a... significant impact on the environment and its animals. it's hard to overstate this point! but that doesn't mean that we are supposed to play impartial gods over our local ecosystems and make sure things stay exactly the same.

the fact is, many indigenous cultures DON'T view introduced species as a significant problem, barring more extreme circumstances. in my research I found surveys of aboriginal australian opinions on invasive control measures and many had said they DON'T see them as invasive, because they grew up on this land and therefore have a right to be there, just like any of them. indigenous cultures, to my knowledge, also tend to have a stewardship over their land not based in CONTROL (like western conservationists) but as an equal PART of a functioning ecosystem. rather than trying to "fix" the ecosystem like a benevolent god, they are a PART of the ecosystem and they adapt to the changing balance of it just like all the other creatures must.

that said, when they DID believe it was time to take some control measures, those surveyed were much more likely to prefer control methods like hunting for use over things like poisoning or culling, calling those methods a waste of a natural resource.

anyways. I've spent way too long on this instead of doing my project lol. I gtg but please know you don't HAVE to advocate for culling invasive species to get ur conservationist cred!! there's a lot of nuance in these situations and it's not a bad thing to care about the wellbeing of ALL animals--it's actually a good thing!!

Sorta! :)) I’m taking up International Studies, which is like a fraternal twin of IR? IS (at least in my uni) is a lot more general compared to IR which delves deeper into diplomacy. (As in if u wanna be a Diplomat vibes.) I spent the last three years studying theories, tactics (lack of a better term but like the soft power + foreign policy shit I see it as manipulation styles LOL), and the European Union (I major in European Studies). Just need to point that out in case it matters(??)

Could you please recommend me some sites in English language which you consider useful for your studies? Sites where I can read about current international questions, global challenges?

For research papers, I rely on credible journals I find through google or the databases my university provides for us. My uni is a research university so students have access to a lot of journal databases. You should check ur uni’s website to see what student perks you have. You might have full access to JSTOR! Make ur tuition worth it HAHA. JSTOR is a classic but I find stuff over at Emerald Insight too. 

For current events, news sites are definitely your friend. My professors would sometimes assign supplementary articles for us. They get their shit from Reuters, The Atlantic and Global Asia to name a few. Maybe that can be a good place to start in terms of current events/run-downs on certain issues. 

I don’t go to these sites myself (like on my own volition) but back when I tried to be updated on news, I downloaded this app called Press Reader which gave me access to different magazines and newspapers so that could also be another option! I just checked and apparently it’s free but I know it was paid back then so yay? (I got it for free bc of my uni). 

Press Reader gives you access (this sounds like a skillshare ad HAHAH) to a lot of different media from many places and that can really help you develop your critical thinking skills + see different perspectives on the same issue. This is a skill which is very important for us IS/IR students. (NGL everyone should have this skill! We should be able to look at different sources and then come to conclusions on our own/see patterns).

In terms of books, the only book I can swear by is Global Politics by Andrew Heywood. It’s not short but the font is big?? I found it online freshman year so if you need it I think I can try making a dropbox for it? You can mosey over to libgen.io (free pdfs!) though. I bet it’s there. I got a physical copy from Amazon (I invested since I know it would be useful) and the information on there was useful for my other classes. It has a lot of general IS stuff like the basic theories (realism, liberalism bleh bleh), history, and notable people. Definitely a good source for foundational information which you can build on in your essays or use as a source!!

I’m not sure what year you are so you might know this already? But since I’m already talking about stuff useful for my personal studies I’ll just thrown in this part LOL. 

I think the most important thing an IR/IS student should know is how to analyze information. Especially since we write a lot of essays. Honestly IS to me is just professional overthinking but make it nerdy somehow?? You need to know how to apply what u learned to what u see playing out in the international arena. Analytical skills are really important! Some assignments I got required us to read three journal articles then write a cohesive piece about it. Sometimes, we have to watch videos then answer guide questions. This is where regular reading and healthy media consumption comes in. 

Best part is: You can practice analyzing content using any kind of material. It doesn’t have to be international affairs stuff!

Do you watch people like dangelowallace, tiffanyferg or even those tea channels (lol) on Youtube? There’s a massive rise of analytical content the past few years and I think you can study the way these people break down drama/internet lore. What makes their video so interesting? How does everything connect? How do they organize their content?

There’s a reason why these videos gain millions of views. They make issues accessible and neat but they make it so interesting at the same time. You can also read fashion magazines since they also have articles which analyze style or talk about a specific piece. 

Honorable mentions: Buzzfeed Unsolved, Storytime Mukbhangs, Kennie JD’s Bad movies and a beat, Crime stories youtubers, etc.

Alternatively, watch your favorite movies and take time to think about why you liked it! Do a character analysis! Watch video essays about your favorite movies/shows on Youtube!! It’s nice to just chill and watch these stuff but at times, try being an active watcher and take note of their reporting style. Talk to your friends about shows you watched. Gather their insights and come up with your own. Analyze popular memes! (Why do spongebob memes have a gorilla grip on gen z??? Why is the white girl dance so freeing? — ngl I do have an opinion about this phenomenon as an asian who “dances like a white girl” but this is so long already HAHAH)

Mina Le (Fashion) -- In this video, Mina breaks down the wardrobe of Emily in Paris and how the choices weren’t so good in terms of the storyline. Emily is seen in designer clothing but her character never shows interest or awareness regarding fashion. (this is jus one point she talks about) For viewers who aren’t into fashion or something, they might not notice this detail at all! But since Mina is viewing this show from a fashion perspective, she was able to pick up these details and connect it to the bigger picture. 

It’s the same for IS. We look at things through different perspectives and from there we can make sense of certain decisions or events! We deal with a lot of problem solving and above all else, we study events so we can understand them. People like Mina Le are perfect examples of good researchers!! They just study different things but its all the same.

ModernGurlz (Fashion/Contemp Stuff) -- This video dissects the style of the characters in Mean Girls and how it says so much about the personality of each girl. For Cady, she has a lot of different styles and it really reflects how her character changes throughout the movie. It helps as a visual guide for us viewers but her clothes tell a story too. 

For IS, Every decision made in the International Arena is important. Everything tells a story. Small actions can say so much about the bigger picture so its important for us to pick up on details the way ModernGurlz did so we can explain developments of a certain issue. (Like how Cady started with very conservative style, then she met the Plastics and that changed her and led her to wearing more revealing clothing, then that gets stripped away because of the plot learns her lesson blah blah and she goes back to slightly relaxed clothes combined with revealing clothes aka her true self i guess).

If you’re not into fashion, you can just analyze whatever ur interested in! These are just some videos I enjoy watching. :)) Astrology is another cool practice! I started getting into astrology and it requires a lot of analysis. It’s fun so it doesnt feel like a chore.

I honestly don’t study or read about international affairs unless I happen to chance upon it. The most helpful things for me aren’t even related to IS. HHH I watch and read a lot of different content and I think that helped me so much with this course! 

I love memes a lot and I usually plug them in a lot of conversations. I guess I use that skill when it comes to my homework in IS when they ask us to talk about a certain topic? I can think of stuff that might be able to connect i guess??? IDK KSDHFKSHD IDK IF any of this makes sense im sorry I just like talking about stuff shdkfhasd. Project 2: Art Interview

For my art interview, I decided to interview my good friend Yianni Binaris. He is a sophomore studying fashion design at Syracuse University. He is one of three males in his whole major. He started fashion design when he got to school and became so good at it that he was invited to represent Syracuse University at New York Fashion Week in NYC. Here’s what he had to say about the world of fashion design and what he wants to do in the future. 

1. What made you decide to go into fashion design?

Um, I got into fashion because when I was younger all I wanted to do was design. I would draw on anything and design whatever and like from that I got into sneakers. Sneakers got me into clothing and the next thing I know I’m here. So I guess it was just a real effect of art. 

2. Do you have any experience in fashion prior to this?

No. I didn’t even know how to sow. Which was definitely a big wake up call when I got here. It was hard especially the first semester because everyone, for the most part, knew how to sow. Everyone was kind of familiar making pieces. And I was just sitting there and I was like Woah. I was considering transferring out of the program. Once I taught myself how to, things went well. 

3. How long have you been working on fashion design?

For about two years.

4. What is it like to be one of the only men in the fashion design program?

One of three males in the program. 17 kids in total. I went to New York Fashion Week. I was the only male there. I guess in today’s society becoming more equal, it's defiantly like interesting it's like I’m the minority now but if anything it's kind of cool cause I’m this underdog. So I have the advantage in a way, that I’m the underdog so no one sees and no one is watching and no one expects this kid to do something that will stand out. It helps me ten times better. I think being an underdog makes it easier.  

5. How long does it take to make a product?

For example for the fashion show, I did last semester for FABS, which is this on-campus fashion show. I completed 16 pieces in total. 2 being dresses. For that at least I was doing this whenever I had free time. Any moment I had I would do like ten minutes on the pieces. For the most part, I spent around like 20 hours maybe a little more on that whole collection for the show. Each bag usually takes around an hour to do from start to finish, an hour and a half maybe to make sure it's a perfect perfect piece. But I know the fastest I’ve done was thirty minutes. Maybe less which was a test result. 

6. And what was that for?

It was just for fun. I wanted to see how fast I could do it. It took me thirty minutes

7. Where do you get the materials for products?

When I first started I was just buying fabric from fabric stores. Honestly, the start to go nothing crazy. And then once I got back to school for my second year, my professor gave me all his scrap materials. And that started getting me thinking more about being sustainable. And what I been trying to do is just using scraps. So for my last clutch, I did with Pop Cycle in Syracuse, all the bags use scrap materials. Little to no purchases made for the materials, everything was just scraps that I found in rooms, around the warehouse where the old fabric was. I had a lot of stuff from Italy that was supposed to be thrown out, leathers that were from Spain collecting dust in a furniture store I collected it. Just anything I can get.

8. What is the process like to make the pieces?

Right now I’m working on pieces that are for the next fashion show which I’m planning on doing in April and for the show the theme is sustainability. I started to see what I wanted to do with sustainability. Cause that’s such a big topic. You can either do a dress out of bottle caps or like taking ur old fabric. Instead, I wanted to go with a different approach making everything wrong but in a way right. I took a kitchen carpet and then turned it into a skirt with buttons. Once I figured out the ideas I started creating new ones. Like I found ripped bags and tuned it into a skirt. Everything around me I used and using my environment to make stuff. Then from there, I make patterns. So I take paper and I trace out what the piece is going to make a sample out of some cheap fabric and once it's all good I make the real piece. For the bag at least I would make random bags and would take my best ideas from the bags and mix and matching the pieces to see which one looks best.

9. How did you start selling clothes?

For my bags, I sold them through Instagram and word of mouth. And that’s just because I was really educated on how to sell stuff. So I would tell people to post my bags on their Instagram and I would give them a free bag that cost me 10 dollars to make but I would sell them for 50. So I was making money that way and it came to be that in the following weeks I was getting random DMs from people asking if they could buy my stuff. It was awesome. 

10. Have you had any challenges so far, if so what were they and how did you face them?

I would say definitely the choice. In the beginning, I was questioning if this industry was for me. Because I was struggling with the major. Then I figured out that it takes time and work and you can’t bullshit. You got to just do the work and put in the time. Then towards the end of my freshman year, I was reading books about fashion. I read four books about different things. One was a military general about being on top of shit, the other book was on menswear, a book on bags and then a book on sales and business. I did this on purpose so I can prepare for my challenges and not struggle. I guess the challenges I faced were all problem-solving stuff and I was able to educate myself. 

11. How do you stand out in a saturated market such as fashion?

I think I stand out because I’m not doing what everyone else is doing. I’m a firm believer in not following every designer on Instagram. When I design stuff I don’t go on Instagram I don’t get inspiration from the internet.    I literally take whats around me and just be like I want to design something based on what u wearing. And then tomorrow I would go back and be like “ I really liked that white strap on Patrick’s jacket let me do something like that. Rather than going on Instagram and being like last week I saw this same design let me also do that. Because then what are u doing? You’re doing nothing. We are at a time where I feel like everything in fashion has done already.  It's just how u take what has been done and make it new and what is new is up to you to figure out. 

12. What is the purpose behind your brand?

My brand is Treeasun. And I started in the summer of 2019 because I wasn’t trying to make money, I wanted people’s opinions on my brands. Cause you send a picture of your pieces to your friends. They are your friends so they will always say “ Oh it looks great” but that’s not what I needed. You got to get honest opinions, the brutal stuff. At first, I started giving the bags out and seeing what people liked. Then once I figured out what people actually liked. I took that into consideration, tweaked some stuff and started selling them right away. The first month I sold I think 15 of the bags broke and I fixed them and gave them right back. It was a learning experience to see what worked and what didn’t work. It was really just throwing a bunch of stuff out there and seeing what the people like.  

13. How do you balance practicing fashion with your other obligations, do you allocate a certain amount of time each week to working on a project out of class? If so, how much time a week do you allocate?

It's funny cause I enjoy it a lot so I get carried away and I end up doing it all day. Like Saturday I was working on a dress due for Monday, then I had a photoshop, which I had to direct, then I had to do other stuff. But I enjoy that type of stuff, but at the same time, it's still a shit ton of work. When I get back to my room I literally don’t do anything. I need ten minutes to get my mind off things and then I’m back to regular programming. In order to do all this designing, I need a break. Especially during Christmas break I literally stayed in my room and played video games and really took my mind off things. It helped me have a fresh mind for new better ideas. 

14. Do you have a favorite piece you have designed, if so what is and why is it your favorite?

This piece I did base off this designer named Geoffrey Beene and it was super difficult to make. Even my professor was questioning if I really wanted to do it. Because usually dresses are like 8 pieces of fabric but this dress was about 42-52 pieces. The dress was all curves so it made for the sowing process to be much difficult than any normal dress. I was like I wanted to do this, it's cool. I took the whole theme and design to like a different perspective rather than taking Geoffrey Beene and looking at his designs and copying his designs. I decided to see what he likes and the things he did as a person like how all he wanted was to play with people’s minds. So I decided to go the unconventional look and made a dress based off of scuba diving. I have this new project coming up that might be my favorite. It's a corvette jacket. I like my clothes to help people stand out.

15. Do you see yourself trying to continue with your brand when you are out of school or do you see yourself getting another job in fashion?

I see myself getting another job because I want the experience before I start my own thing. I want to learn as much as I can before I start my design or company. I also want to meet as many people in the industry before I expand on my ideas and share them with the world. 

16. If you could give advice to anyone trying to start a business similar to yours or go into fashion design, what would it be?

I say just shoot at your designs. You’re always going to be figuring out what’s good and what’s not. I feel like at the end of the day just do it. Who cares what people think just be yourself and do your thing. 

17. If you weren’t studying Fashion Design what would you be studying?

I actually came to school to study business but I didn’t get in. But fashion design was my back up. I was going to play it safe by being a business major because my dad is in business so it was probably the best option. 

Yianni Binaris is a second-year fashion design student, who before coming to Syracuse did not even know how to thread a needle. However, in the past two years that has quickly changed. Despite Yianni being only one of three guys in the fashion design program at Syracuse, he is a major representative and has even gotten to experience New York Fashion Week. Over his time in the program, Yianni has dedicated an immense amount of time to improving his skills and in doing so he has been able to sell some of his personality made merchandise known under the brand name Treeasun. Yianni is passionate about continuing with fashion after graduation and growing his brand and skills over the next two years.
