“I’d rather eat spam.” Taako stares at the motel bed with a pinched expression and follows it up with a look at Kravitz like he’s the crab ruining his night. “You can sleep in the chair.”
“I’m not going to do that.” Kravitz smiles back, daring him to step to. “The nice woman at the front desk gave us the honeymoon discount. Is this really the way to treat your honey?”
“You’re the bees!” Taako folds his arms. “I’m going to sleep in the car, then.”
“No, you’re not. It’s a king size bed. It’s plenty big enough for both of us to keep our hands to ourselves. Unless you’re afraid of...what, snuggling me in the middle of the night? Sure, it would add to our cover, but how could your dignity ever recover from-”
“That’s not- Ugh!” Taako stomps his foot like a petulant child, seems to regret embarrassing himself with something so beneath him, then decides to roll with it because there’s no taking it back. “It’s not that I don’t want to sleep with you-”
“Then what?” Kravitz smiles. “I even brought pajamas, so you won’t have to suffer me nude.”
Taako can’t help but lick his lips, and he blushes when he realizes he did that out loud.
“It’s just...you wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me.” Kravitz softens a little, losing his defensive edge. “I know I’m not actually your boyfriend, but we’ve spent a lot of hours in the car with one another, and the fact that I don’t want to kill you yet is promising.”
Taako snorts despite himself.
“It’s just that I get night terrors, alright? And I’m gonna wake you up, and you’re gonna be weird about it, and it’s gonna be a whole thing, and then you won’t look me in the eye tomorrow-”
“In my hypothetical defense, if one of us is driving, I’d prefer the eye contact to be minimal.”
“Oh, shut up! I’m being vulnerable here and you’re being a dweeb honkus.”
“I have to admit, that’s not something I’ve been accused of before, but I see your point.” Kravitz sighs and sits on the bed, patting the spot beside him in invitation. Taako debates it silently for a moment before giving in and joining him. It is a pretty comfortable bed for a motel. It would be nicer than sleeping in the back seat of his car.
“I’m sorry to hear you get night terrors, Taako, but that isn’t going to bother me. Besides, it’s not something you can help, so I can hardly blame you for it, can I?” His tone is so gentle that Taako wants to punch him. But maybe with his face. Gently. He tries to shake that impulse off. What they have is fake. It’s just to get them across the country to Neverwinter. It’s not going to be real and it never was.
Kravitz looks at him with those big, soulful brown eyes and Taako aches.
“Yeah, I guess,” he says, mouth dry. “Thanks.”
“You shouldn’t have to thank me for treating you the way you deserve to be treated,” Kravitz says, a little mystified, and he bumps their shoulders together fondly. “But you’re welcome. Now, unless you’re planning to pin me down and really use this bed the way the manufacturers intended, I’d like to suggest we find the remote and see if they have enough cable to get us the Food Network. What do you say?”
Taako blushes fiercely at the impossible possibility, and he nods. If only. If only this were real. If only they were actual boyfriends. If only…
A kiss would be real nice, right about now.
