#i did miss ingo trying to remember how to drive a train

which twin would koala cling to the other during reunions though. and what scenario would make that funniest? Ingo crashing his own funeral? Ingo waking up in his own proper bed and unthinkingly getting up and making coffee on autopilot? Ingo showing up at work and just autopiloting into the train he would normally have done, or being basically pushed into one by the depot agents while just sitting there like ??????? ?????????????? this is all very familiar and all but what do I do in here?????????
*SNERK* sorry i was skimming the ask and my brain latched on to "koala hug at the funeral"
Okay so I do tend to see Emmet as the more clingy of the two, but that's not to say it would never be Ingo! I fully believe they are both silly at the heart of it<3
Ingo being a clingy koala would depend on his memory state! If he had his memories back and could remember just how lonely he'd been all that time, I could absolutely see him honing in on Emmet and just not letting go. (Emmet has no complaints no sir)
If he didn't have his memories back, but knew in his heart of hearts that this man in white is super important to him, I could also see him latching on. No one is going to separate them until he knows why his heart is so full again!
Emmet certainly has more reason to just wrap himself around Ingo forever. In pretty much any situation, he has great reason to fear Ingo vanishing. Did he see what happened? CLING! Did Ingo just vanish without witness? CLINGGGG!
That said, I adore the idea of Ingo running on autopilot and just confusing the heck out of everyone. Imagine getting a lifetime of memories back all at once, how disorienting that would be! God, even worse would be if Emmet had taken a rare vacation off, maybe off with Elesa or visiting Drayden or something.
Ingo wakes up in bed, head pounding but surroundings familiar. He knows he's got to get up and see to his warden duties get to work, right? Right. Coffee first, that would surely help clear things up. Then he could cook a quick breakfast over the fire...or wait. Not that one, right? Maybe he'd just skip breakfast entirely.
There are two steaming cups of coffee on the counter, and he's staring at them as if they hold the answers to the universe. Why two? Why two indeed. He downs them both (not one to waste things, but why did he add so much sugar to one??), and staggers back to his room to get dressed.
Perhaps his pokemon are out, and he cannot fathom why it's so strange to see Alakazam in the hallway, or Gliscor draped over the couch. (They are exploring this curious new dwelling. Ingo isn't distressed, so they're not particularly nervous.)
Once dressed and marginally more awake (though his head is still pounding, not a great way to get through a day), he gets lost in thought as he tries to figure out why things are so wrong but so right. All the while his feet are automatically taking him to gear station along his normal route. He doesn't hear the whispers or see the stares, too focused on his pounding head and fuzzy thoughts.
A shopkeeper of a store he always used to get a morning paper from calls his name hesitantly, snapping him out of his thoughts. He greets him reflexively, saying it was good to see him after so long. Then frowns to himself. What did he mean after so long? Well, he doesn't have time to dwell, as he's going to be late if he dawdles longer.
I'm terribly sorry Emmet, but the depot agents get first dibs on dog piling Ingo. He makes it to the station and halfway to the office before the first one spots him. He had a good run, but goes down under Furze's flying tackle. (He's so ecstatic Ingo is baaaaack)
After a few rounds of reunion, Ingo's brain finally kicks in and he realizes he's finally home after so long. Okay let's be real, its the agents telling him he's been gone that jogs his brain out of its overload. Either way, Ingo must know where Emmet is, since he wasn't home. They actually have that info, and Ingo is off before anyone can sensibly suggest him calling ahead first.
Let's say Emmet is helping out at Elesa's gym, just so he can be nearby. Maybe he's subbing her as boss so she can take a day off or something. Either way, there is certainly a commotion running through the gym. Some trainer is speeding through all the challenges, heading straight for Emmet. Well no matter, he's ready for a serious battle, yup!
Only the person who arrives is an out of breath Ingo who doesn't waste a moment before flying at his brother, throwing his arms around him and taking them both down in a much needed hug. Ingo has decided not to let go of Emmet for a while. Emmet is okay with this.
(Emmet absolutely heckles his brother later for the trainwreck of an arrival story. And here Ingo is supposed to be the cool one!)

Deceit
cw: pla Ingo, someone lying about being his girlfriend,
-------
Ingo sighed as he went through the papers once more. None of his previous life had yet to return to him in its entirety, so he found himself trying in small ways to bring it back. Emmet had reassured him that he always preferred to go over the paperwork while the younger twin went off to check the trains, but… While he could read the paper, comprehending it was another thing entirely. None of this was of grave importance and Emmet would have looked over it later any way to make sure that there were no errors, so Ingo put the sheet down and stood up.
He stroked his goatee a bit and let out another sigh. Everything from Hisui was clear as day in his mind, but Unova was something fuzzy and untouchable. Something more than a head injury seemed to keep him from fulling reaching out to those old memories that made him who he was. Strong ones mad it through, like knowing who Emmet was at a glance. You do not share an entire life with another person and forget them when they stand before you. He had attempted to drive a train, too. The skill was locked into his muscle memory, but he had no conscious idea as to why he did what he did.
The office door closed behind him as Depot Agents perked up from their desks in the main office area. Many were curious about him, he knew. Most if not all knew him previously. The him he could not reach. It was almost all so tiring. “If Emmet returns, I'm just taking a walk around the station, alright?” he told them with a strong voice, much like he used towards those he trained in Jubilife. They nodded. One even giving a 'you got it, boss'. The word boss made his hurt, usually.
Subway Boss… What did that even mean? He supposed he and his brother did seemingly run it, but it was not something he was currently in any shape to do. Did he really deserve that title? Shaking his head, he stepped out in the main area of the Gear Station. Hoards of people wandered around the area in almost a trance. It was nothing like he had seen in Hisui, yet it was comfortable. Familiar. Ingo knew this place and scene. With more confident strides, he began to walk around the station to observe it functioning. People who caught glances of him whispered and stared.
How did a guy as seemingly ordinary as him become a local celebrity? He saw news reports about his missing status and return, fans crying over both, and weird comments towards him constantly. His brother was friends with this city's Gym Leader, who also was a famous model, but Ingo felt that was not what drove attention on to them. It must have been battling, he decided. His brother was what they called a 'trainer' modernly. As was he, judging by the crying pokemon that approached him after being brought back to his apartment. A chandelier pokemon cried pitifully for him, floating up to the silver-haired man and trying to embrace him with her iron arms. His previous affliction to raise strong pokemon and crave thrilling battles made sense.
“I-Ingo?” a shrill voice called out. The older twin froze at it. A girl with long brown hair ran up to him with fat tears swelling in her eyes. Hiccuping and trying to wipe away the tears, she stared at him. “Oh, my sweet, Ingo is here!" she shouted and moved to embrace him. Her face was buried into his chest as she wept. Did Ingo know her? Nothing about her was familiar. She was younger than most of the people he had met, likely in her late teens or early twenties.
“… Do I know you?” he asked, awkwardly giving her a pat on the back. No strong feelings stirred inside him towards her presence. Not like Elesa and Emmet had brought on. Maybe they were acquaintances, or she was a common challenger that was just so relieved to see him again.
“Oh, my love, do you not remember me?” she cooed, staring up at him with eyes full of an emotion he could not yet pinpoint. Her use of a pet name sent a shiver down his spine. He shook his head. A gasp came from her as she took a step back. Lightly, she slapped both of her own cheeks and rubbed the tears from her eyes. Standing up tall, she gave a sad smile. “It's me, Ingo, your girlfriend.” Ingo recoiled at her words. That was simply impossible.
“My spouse was with me in Hisui,” Ingo blurted out to her loving confession. She froze and her face fell. You had been with him in Hisui, after all. It was your hard work despite the terrible circumstance that had befallen you both that helped you both finally return home. In fact, you were supposed to be on your way to the station to have lunch with him. Your memories had remained intact, so your knowledge and information had been precious both then and now. “I do apologise, but I do not like being lied to,” he shook his head.
In what must have been an embarrassed flurry, she ran off from him and disappeared into a crowd. Another calling of his mind took his attention off it, however. His twin popped out from the direction of the office and waved him over. Ingo made his way over to him, as his brother wrapped an arm around his shoulders and led him away. “Who was that?” Emmet asked with a tilt of his head.
“She claimed to be my girlfriend,” he replied. Emmet snorted. The younger twin shook his head.
“Mhm, you will get a few of those,” he told him, “You are pretty popular. I remember how one of those fans even threatened your partner once. They do not care.”
“… I miss Hisui already,” Ingo sighed and shook his head. Absolutely no one would be threatening you on his watch. Not after he watched you be removed from the closest thing you had to home in Hisui and having that blond merchant attempt to kill you for his selfish goals. “Did they forget I'm married?”
“They think you forgot,” Emmet corrected.
“I did,” he admitted, twisting the silver band on his ring finger, “They would never let me forget, however…” Emmet smiled brightly at his brother's gentle reflection.
“They make you verrrry happy,” he giggled, “That's why I like them. They're here, too.” Ingo perked up at that.
After that strange encounter, he could spend some alone time with you.

Thrown Home Again - Pt 4
I think this might be the last main bit, unless people REALLY want to see an epilogue. I kinda like where I ended this one off
Word Count: ~4400
Ingo had to admit, Elesa knew her way around makeup. He studied himself in the mirror, trying not to rub his hands along the left side of his face. She had even managed to find a colored contact for him in his old eye color. If you weren’t looking for it, it was barely noticeable that Ingo had even been injured in the first place. The color she used blended in perfectly with his pale skin, removing the reddish hue that took up a good portion of his cheek. His eyes matched. The only thing that looked out of place were the ridges of excess flesh that outlined the affected area, but there hadn’t been much to do about that. Elesa stood behind him, watching him look himself over with a grin on her face. “Well, whaddaya think?”
“It is remarkably convincing. I do not think I will wear it out but… it is nice to remember what I was like before the accident.” She placed a hand on his shoulder, grinning at his astounded expression.
“Would you like to show Emmet?” Ingo nodded, eagerly. He opened the door to the bathroom, exiting the small room. He began to move down the hall before he got an idea. He returned to his room and pulled out another old uniform, changing his shirt carefully and putting on the untarnished cap and coat. He grabbed a tie as he called out to the kitchen.
“Emmet! Put on your uniform, I wish to test something!”
Emmet’s confused voice floated down the hall, “Um. Okay? What for?”
“Just trust me, I think you will like this.” He heard footsteps approaching Emmet’s room and the door shut. He put on his old black slacks and dress shoes, studying himself in the mirror behind his door. He frowned, like normal. Perfect. Ingo could feel pure giddiness bubbling up inside his chest, reminding him of a time when he and Emmet were small.
“Are you alright, brother? I’m dressed.”
“Yes, I’m coming. Close your eyes.” He opened the door to find Emmet in the small hallway, standing and facing the door with his eyes closed. Ingo took his hand, feeling the edges of his mouth quirk up in his signature half-smile. He led Emmet a bit closer to the entrance of the kitchen. “Open them.”
Emmet’s eyes fluttered open. And he covered his mouth with his hands. He stared at Ingo’s face, who was now half-grinning like an idiot. “We- we match again! How did she do that?” Ingo shook his head.
“I wondered if you wanted to do our old pose.” Emmet nodded, his eyes sparkling. They both giggled to each other like children behind the wall, taking a deep breath. They walked out from behind the wall in sync, pointing into the kitchen with opposite hands, their other arms pointing at perfect right angles, their hands positioned at the ground. Ingo made sure to frown, knowing Emmet was smiling beside him. Elesa, Rei, Irida, and Adaman all turned to them, the last three’s eyes widening as they took in the twins. Elesa had a soft smile on her face. She knew exactly what was about to happen.
“Follow the rules. Safe driving! Follow the schedule. Everybody smile! Check safety. Everything's ready! Aim for victory!"
“I am a Subway Boss, Ingo. The fellow over to the side is also a Subway Boss, Emmet. Will a Multi Battle help us cover each other's weakness? Or will you show your overwhelming power? I look forward to seeing how well you fight. However, it is difficult to win unless you and your partner are in total sync."
Both tipped their outstretched hands towards the ceiling, calling “All aboard!” in time with each other. Ingo felt another wave of giddiness wash over him. Emmet must have been feeling it as well because as soon as their impromptu performance was done, he whirled to Ingo, grabbing his forearms and hopping in place, his face split wide in a grin.
“I missed that so much! Oh, Ingo, I’m so excited to run Multi Battles with you again! We can pose and call and win like we used to! We can ride the trains together again! Oh Arceus-” he cut himself off by bear-hugging Ingo, who hugged his brother back, laughing. Both of them stood in the doorframe, shoulders shaking with child-like laughter, the kind neither of them had felt since they still lived with their mother. “I’m so glad you’re home, Ingo,” Emmet murmured. Ingo patted his brother’s back, indicating that he was ready to pull away, which Emmet did, his face still lit up like the sun.
“I’m glad to be home, Emmet.” Ingo was smiling. He knew it, looking at Emmet’s face.
“Ingo, you’re smiling again. You’re smiling at me!”
“I know!” he laughed. He reached forward and hugged Emmet again. “I missed you.”
“Hey guys, enough sappy crap, lemme see if that makeup smudged during this whole thing.” They’d forgotten there were others here. Ingo detached himself from Emmet, still softly grinning. He moved to the table, allowing Elesa to scrutinize his face. “Somehow you seem to have avoided smudging it. Maybe I should have some of my girls take tips from you.” The three time travelers wore the same facial expression of surprise and amusement at the display. Adaman had his signature smirk watching them, Irida smiling and Rei holding back laughter.
Elesa leaned back as Emmet came over, grinning in his uniform, too. She got a mischievous glint in her eye. Before either could react, she knocked off their hats and passed a fist over their hair in a super effective double-noogie, the kind that she had mastered in their childhood. Both men cried out, trying to save themselves from the assault. Emmet bent down and grabbed their hats, handing Ingo’s back to him. “You guys are such dorks,” Elesa grinned. “I’m glad you’re both back.” She hugged them both to her chest for a moment before pointing at the chairs. “Now sit down, I’m trying to figure out what to get for dinner and I don’t know what all you two have eaten in the last few days.” Ingo remembered to pull slightly on the lower end of his coat so that he would not cause it to pull at his shoulders too much. He hadn’t even noticed that he and Emmet had sat in sync until he looked up at the others at the table and saw them still regarding him with wide eyes.
“It is very interesting to watch the two of you interact,” Irida said quietly.
“Yeah. They both have one shared brain cell when they’re in the same room.” Ingo and Emmet shot Elesa a dirty glare from across the table, making her laugh. “See?” she asked, gesturing to them. Rei snorted.
“When I was little, the kids called that ‘twin telepathy’, it's like psychics except only between twins. I’m now mostly convinced they have it.”
Conversation dulled a bit after that, resorting to dinner plans and sleeping arrangements. It was decided that the twins could both take Emmet’s room, one of the newcomers could take the couch, and the other two could either share a bed or lay out a cot on the floor. Adaman insisted he was alright on the floor, so after dinner, the twins set up a small pallet made of blankets dug up from the hall closet. They also made sure that the Clan Leaders understood modern amenities (particularly in the bathroom) before tucking in for the night. Elesa said her goodbyes, reminding them of the plan for tomorrow. She told Ingo he could keep the colored contact. He took it out and placed it into a holder that she lent him, too. He was currently unsure about whether he would wear it in public.
The twins also gave their guests extra clothing to wear to bed, after which they themselves dressed. Soon, it was late. Ingo found himself in the kitchen making himself his old favorite chamomile tea with honey to help him sleep. He no longer had his leg on, and thus was using a crutch and the counters to move about. He had already wiped the makeup off his face. He sat under the lone light at the table, allowing himself to enjoy his drink. Chandelure floated above him in her usual spot, chiming softly at him. He reached out and patted her. “Tomorrow is going to be a rough journey. I will need your support once again, old friend.” The Pokemon chimed happily at him, nuzzling the left side of his face. He chuckled. “I missed you as well.” He opened his eye to see Irida, standing in one of their old t-shirts instead of her Clan outfit, watching him with trepidation.
“Ah! Lady Irida, come sit, if you’d like. I am simply enjoying some tea. Would you like some? It helps me sleep.” Irida shook her head, cautiously stepping over to the table and taking a seat.
“I am… alright, thank you. Today has been… quite a shock. This is truly the space you came from? It is so different to Hisui, I do not quite know what to make of it. There are so many new things and technologies that I cannot wrap my head around.” She shook her head. “I see now why you were so overwhelmed when you arrived in Hisui. Especially without your brother. I cannot imagine the things you must have…” Her bright blue eyes gazed at the wood of the table as she trailed off.
“My Lady, I will not lie. I was incredibly lonely. Nothing that anyone could have done would have made that easier. Emmet is my other half. You’ve seen us together. Any time I am without him, I am simply one of a set, misplaced. Nothing feels right without him, even without my memories I could tell that much. It is not like you could have brought him to me. I was, and still am, eternally grateful for all you did do for me. Without you, I likely would have frozen to death on that hill. Or died after that Crobat attack. Or one of many other times. It is thanks to you that I got to live to see my Emmet again.” She looked up at the change in his voice. It was still quiet, trying not to be too loud at this time of night, but it carried a strong note of appreciation. “I never would have gotten to return back to Unova without your aid. And you allowed me to form the bond that I did with Lady Sneasler. Being Lady Sneasler’s Warden gave me a purpose in Hisui, something to wake up for, even on the days I felt at my lowest. You did the best you could given the circumstances.” Ingo looked at her warmly.
“This world is very different, yes, but it is navigable. You will most likely not have to be here long. Rei can and will take you back whenever you would like. I appreciate the concern for my well-being, but I am back where I belong. I am happy I get to say a proper goodbye to you, but I know your train will not wait forever.” Irida nodded, something changing in her eyes. “Though I do have one more request to ask of you.”
“What is it?”
“I still have three Pokemon with me from Hisui that are extinct in this time. They are an Alpha Wyrdeer, an Alpha Kleavor, and an Alpha Basculegion. Would you bring them back to Hisui with you? They do not belong here and I have no space to train them properly. They deserve to be in their own time and space. If you believe someone could give them proper training, then by all means, allow that. Otherwise, they belong back in the wilds of Hisui.” Irida nodded.
“Of course, Ingo. I will ensure they return safely.” Ingo nodded, sipping his tea. The effects were beginning to set in. He felt a little drowsy. He stood, grabbing his crutch and hobbling over to the sink to rinse his now-empty mug.
“I will now retire for the evening. Me and Emmet sleep in this room right here, and Adaman and Rei are a bit further down the hall. Feel free to let you Pokemon out to pass the night if you wish. Let us know if you need anything. I am a rather light sleeper.” He nodded to Irida, who waved at him.
“Thank you, Ingo. Good night.”
“Good night, Lady Irida.” Ingo took his crutch and made his way into the bedroom, seeing Emmet still awake. “You did not have to wait up for me, Emmet.”
“I wished to.” Ingo leaned his crutch against the nightstand and collapsed into the bed, allowing Emmet to curl into his side. Ingo sighed, his eyelids drooping closed as he wrapped his arm around his brother. “Good night, Ingo.”
“Good night, Emmet.”
—-----------------
Ingo awoke the next morning to an empty bed, to his surprise. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and got up, going to the kitchen. In there already were just Emmet and Adaman, having a quiet conversation so as not to disturb the sleeping Irida laying on the couch, her Glaceon curled on top of her stomach.
“Ingo tells me of the hardships of Hisui.”
“Hisui is a wild land compared to this one. Pokemon here seem more docile and more amenities are here. It’s fascinating to see how time can change things as simple as water.” Adaman watched Emmet use the sink. “Simple things seem so affected by the flow of time, from the way we move right down to the simplest of tasks, changing with the times.” Adaman paused again. “I never had the pleasure of getting to know Ingo much in Hisui. He was a Pearl Clan Warden, but he did work alongside my own Warden, Melli. I would see him from time to time in the Coronet Highlands.” Emmet stayed quiet, but Ingo could see him listening. “He was always in bright spirits. Or, at least, I think he was. Always a little hard to read.” Emmet grinned when he said that. “He was always polite. When I heard about the accident, I felt sympathy for him. Though he recovered from it shockingly fast and well, especially then taking on the title of Warden. It is not an easy job, but he wielded it with grace and almost ease. He excelled with Pokemon in a way I envied. He was easily the most skilled fighter in Hisui, until Rei appeared.” Emmet was still grinning as he washed the dishes. Ingo decided to make his presence known.
He moved into the kitchen, nodding at Adaman. “Good morning, Sir Adaman. Good morning, Emmet.” Emmet looked up and grinned at him. He flicked some water off his fingers at Ingo, who flinched and then narrowed his eyes.
“Good morning, Ingo!” he said cheerfully.
“It is too early for you to start a battle you will not win.”
“Then I’ll just have to win!” Emmet grinned, watching him confidently. Ingo rolled his eyes, smacking Emmet’s shoulder as he passed to make his way to the table, sitting in his spot.
“Good morning, Ingo,” Adaman greeted politely. He kept an eye on the Chandelure floating above Ingo, staying in her usual spot. Ingo noticed Galvantula by the stove Emmet was using, watching him cook. He figured Rei was still asleep. Emmet came to the table and set down a cup of coffee, prepared the way Ingo liked it.
“Thank you, Emmet.” He took a soft sip, relishing the taste. Coffee was yet another thing he’d missed in Hisui. Ingo reached a hand up, beckoning to Chandelure, who floated down and happily nuzzled into his hand. “Good morning to you, too, Chandelure,” he said fondly.
“Is that why you were always so good with Pokemon?” Adaman asked. Ingo looked over at him thoughtfully.
“The relationship people and Pokemon have in this age is very different to Hisui. For one, Pokemon never attack humans directly. And if they do, it is because you entered their territory. They usually stick to tall grass, caves, and water. They are hardly ever out in broad daylight. Everyone over the age of ten has their own Pokemon, for the most part. Pokemon are not widely feared, but instead treated as equals. Pokemon are friends to us. Pokemon are living things, like us, many of which simply desire companionship. Take Chandelure for example. I found her as a tiny Litwick when me and Emmet were exploring a forest near our mother’s house when we were maybe seven years old. At first, I was fearful because of her ghost typing. And she was unsure of me. I have had her for over twenty years now. She is my most trusted partner, my greatest ally, and my best friend. She missed me greatly in my absence. We are an incredibly powerful duo.” Chandelure chimed happily at the praise Ingo was giving her, spinning in a slow circle in front of him. She nuzzled her glass against his cheek, making him chuckle. “She also loves attention and spicy Poffins. She enjoys seeing new places and meeting new people in the Subway.” Adaman was watching them with a soft smirk on his face. He released his Leafeon on a whim.
“Leaaaf?” Leafeon looked at the unfamiliar surroundings, trying to find a battle. Adaman scooted back and patted his lap, which the grass-type hopped into immediately. It watched Ingo and Chandelure for a moment.
“Hello, again, Leafeon.” Ingo greeted the small Pokemon cheerfully. “Chandelure, you are not getting my coffee, we have discussed this before.” The ghost backed away from the cup, giving him pleading eyes. “I will give you treats after our outing if you behave. You know coffee is bad for you.”
There was a shuffling of feet in the entryway from the hall. Ingo and Adaman looked up in unison to see a still-sleepy Rei, wearing a shirt much too large for him, wiping the sleep out of his eyes. His Typhlosion was following him. Ingo waved at the boy. “Good morning, Rei. Care to join us?” Rei wordlessly made his way to the table, Emmet offering a smile in greeting. He sat with a thump by Ingo, who ruffled the boy’s hair. Typhlosion stood behind him, laying its head on top of his. Ingo sipped his coffee, again shooing Chandelure away from the mug. They sat in a comfortable silence, Adaman occasionally asking questions about how things worked in modern times. Irida joined them before long. Emmet served them all a quick breakfast of eggs and toast. Emmet sat on Ingo’s other side, Galvantula hanging on the ceiling above him and sneakily trying to steal his breakfast when she thought he wasn’t looking. Chandelure took a keen interest in Typhlosion, a fellow ghost/fire type.
After breakfast, Ingo cleaned up while the others got dressed, then he and Emmet switched off when he was ready so Ingo could prepare. By the time Ingo emerged from Emmet’s room, his leg in place and his uniform on and in pristine condition, everyone else was already sitting at the table, ready for the journey to begin. Elesa had come in at some point while Ingo was getting prepared. “Are you two sure you want to wear the hats and coats? I said we should get you outside, not mauled by the news.” The twins looked at each other and shrugged, both removing their outerwear. Ingo stepped up to Emmet and tied his tie, Emmet doing the same for him. Something about such a habitual action made Ingo’s mind settle. Ingo also straightened out Emmet’s hair, making sure his bangs swooped to the left side of his face. Emmet did the same for him. The group, now ready, put away their Pokemon and stepped out the door into the sunlight.
“Remember, we are just going to see some of the workers, maybe ride the Subway a little bit, and then go home. Easy. You guys make sure you keep up, the weekend in Nimbasa can get a little crowded.” Irida, Rei, and Adaman all nodded, staying close to the Unovans.
Chandelure and Eelektross flanked the twins, Emolga soaring ahead as they walked along. They arrived at Gear Station rather quickly, faster than Ingo would have thought from that first day. They entered the station, descending the stairs as Elesa chatted to them idly. Rei talked with her. Ingo was aware of people staring at them, but really tried to pay them no mind. Emmet stood on his left side, which was actually a big help to him. He knew nothing would sneak up on them. As they moved throughout the platform, there was a worker or two that waved to Emmet before taking down their hand and staring at Ingo. Emmet smiled and waved, Ingo waving as well, trying to act natural.
They watched the train pull into the platform. Ingo’s eyes widened at the sight. “A train,” he breathed. Emmet grinned as he watched Ingo, though he could not see it from the left side. “I haven’t ridden a train in two years.”
“Then let us not waste time!”
“All aboard!” both Conductors shouted, earning some curious glances from onlookers. The group all boarded the train, tucking away their partner Pokemon. They selected a booth nearby, all six of them managing to squeeze into it. The train whistled, making goosebumps appear on Ingo’s arms. He shivered in anticipation. Oh, he had missed this. The PA system came on, announcing their next destination and the simple safety rules before the train gave a loud whistle, slowly pulling out of the station. Ingo squeezed Emmet’s hand, his own hand shaking. Emmet smiled at him.
“You are excited,” he said, not asking a question. Ingo nodded, his eye alight.
“I haven’t done this in years. I’d forgotten how much I missed this.” Ingo watched out the window as the train picked up speed, exiting the underground and appearing outside, rolling quickly through different routes and towns. They stayed on the train as some people got on and off, Ingo vibrating excitedly in his seat, Emmet watching him with happiness. At some point, Ingo had just started listing off every single train fact he knew. Emmet grew excited with him, dumping every train fact he knew along with Ingo. They were essentially just talking over each other about trains for over thirty minutes. Nobody stopped them. Rei watched them with fascination, Irida following suit. Adaman raised an eyebrow at them and watched other passengers in the car with them. Elesa played on her phone.
By the time they pulled back into Nimbasa, they had only exhausted maybe half of the total amount of train facts they knew. Elesa had to practically shove them off the train because they wouldn’t move. She led them out of the Subway, about twice the amount of employees as before gathering to see their Bosses. Neither said anything, only nodding at them as they passed. They left the station, making it all the way back to the apartment with the twins still discussing trains. Elesa seemed unbothered. Emmet unlocked the door and swung it open, grinning. The six of them re-entered the apartment, all flopping down with a sigh at the table.
“So that’s what a train is,” Irida said. She said nothing else.
“Are you certain that’s all we need to do, Elesa?” Ingo asked.
“I’ve been paying attention to social media all day and I’m already seeing some little stories about you two floating around, which is exactly what we want. Phase 1 is done. Now for Phase 2. Emmet, you call out tomorrow. Tell the workers that Ingo is back and you need to spend a couple days with him to adjust until the next appointment to make sure his ribs are back in order. Once you get the okay from the doc on Wednesday, start integrating Ingo back to life on the Subway, preferably with Multi Battles so you can balance each other out in case things go south. Some news anchor will want an interview with you, but I might be able to pull some strings and make the experience as painless as possible. It’ll take a few steps, but soon enough you both will be back as the Subway Bosses of Nimbasa City!” Ingo glanced at Emmet. He already looked tired just hearing this. Ingo knew the news was not Emmet’s favorite part of the job.
“That sounds doable,” Emmet sighed. It was quiet for a moment.
“I also think it may be nearly time for us to take our leave,” Adaman said. “We need to return to our Clans. It has been lovely to see you all, but we really should return to our time.” Irida nodded sadly. Rei looked at them and then ran over to Ingo, hugging him.
“When I finish in Hisui and I go back home, I’m visiting you guys here in Nimbasa.” Ingo chuckled and hugged the boy back, ruffling his hair.
“We will be waiting for you. Here, Lady Irida, if you would take these for me.” Ingo stood, grabbing three Pokeballs from his dresser and depositing them in her hands. Irida nodded at him.
“I will ensure they are well cared for.” Ingo nodded at her as a thanks. To his surprise, she hugged him. “Take care of yourself, Ingo.” Ingo, after a moment, hugged her back. Adaman watched on as they released each other, Rei coming back for one more hug.
“I’ll be seeing you, Uncle Ingo! And you, Uncle Emmet and Aunt Elesa!” Then he zoomed out the door, Irida and Adaman close behind him. Emmet and Elesa had both frozen up at the mention of their names with their new titles, both with their eyes wide. Ingo watched them and couldn’t help the laugh that tumbled from his mouth. Ingo pulled them up to go out to the balcony, watching the three as Rei pulled out Dialga, waving to them as they entered the portal the Pokemon created and blinked out of their existence. Emmet looped one arm around Ingo’s waist. Elesa looped hers around the other.
“Well, they were lively characters, weren’t they?” Elesa asked after a minute of silence. Both brothers nodded. “And what a cute kid. I hope you keep him.” Emmet, for the third time, choked on air, making Ingo laugh. He looped an arm around both of the people around him, pulling them into an awkward side-hug as they all watched the street behind the twins’ apartment.
He was home.
