Biomutant - Early Impressions

So. Biomutant’s out starting tomorrow, the reviews are in and, well…

From the looks of it, if you’re a fan of excessively safe design trends mashed together and of original works only coyly iterating on tested-and-proven mechanics, you’ll love it. Some games can take in common mechanics and rise past their milquetoast heritage thanks to bits and pieces of technical genius (see Monolith’s Shadow of) duology and others seem to bask in how unabashedly okay the end-product can be. Judging by the reviews, this is largely where Experiment 101’s freshman effort stands.

As far as pros are concerned, the level design and obvious Breath of the Wild undertones are praised. Biomutant oozes personality and charm, the art design is gorgeous, and its crafting and character creation systems allow for the creation of unique permutations. There’s a lot of room for generalists and minmaxers alike, with even restrictive builds having plenty of internal leeway. This obviously sets the tone for a high degree of replayability, especially considering how investing in some resistance buffs early on can allow you to tackle certain high-risk zones earlier. Combat feels generally fluid, and no amount of class-specific tinkering changes the fact that all classes can use the game’s full arsenal at any given point. You can play as a Commando without ever investing in your character’s Wung Fu (the in-universe martial arts system) that you’ll still have a base amount of proficiency with punches, kicks and jabs.

Things get a little muddier if the game’s less-favored aspects are considered. Your avuncular narrator’s propensity to jabber along can be tweaked in the Settings menu, but the consensus seems to involve the notion that constantly having someone step in to translate an NPC’s gibberish breaks the game’s immersion. I fully expect some streamers to crank the Narrator’s slider all the way to the left, in order to reduce him to all but the most essential of voiced barks. In a way that’s somehow associated, some reviewers have lamented the game’s eagerness to tackle difficult topics while smothering them in baby-talk. Obviously, this is in place in order to evoke things like Mad Max’s linguistic shifts or the notion that you’re effectively looking at non-specific mammals voicing concrete thoughts in a borrowed language, Planet of the Apes style, so some shifts in terminology can be explained. As far as the Narrator’s concerned, for instance, you lost your Mooma and Popsy as a kitling. Most characters have similarly simplistic names, and it’s not that much of a bother if you recall how other world-builders noted for their lack of confidence gave us the Gunganese patois of Basic, in the Star Wars canon. If, however, you’re not a fan of vocally restrained British men cheering your display of psionic energy with an approving “Crackazam!” like you’re watching a Michael Rosen video before it turns into a meme; chances are you’ll get tired of the overall presentation fairly quickly.

Then, there’s the fact that the game’s mechanics are a little iffy, at times. You’re expected to be able to attack, block and counter with the same ease as in an Arkham or Shadow of title, but some parry prompts are frustratingly easy to miss, with the auto lock-on system not being entirely helpful. I’ve read of cases where the player character fully disengaged after dispatching a single enemy, requiring either manual target selection or manual mêlée or ranged attacks to re-enter a fighting stance. Each Wung Fu technique also comes with a “Super Wung Fu” attack that can only be landed once the requisite meter fills, with the associated wind-up oftentimes being long enough to ensure that by the time your flying pile-driver lands, the enemies have long-since vacated your immediate vicinity. Not every stance seems to be equally useful, and not every mutation or permanent perk seems equally balanced. As for what gets you to attack the locals ad nauseam, the sidequests are noted as being nondescript. Only the main quest has any real character, with the rest consisting of Ubisoft-alike fetch-a-thons, of outposts to clear and merchants and service providers to unlock. So far, so open-world.

The morality system is also noted as being dated in design, seeing as nearly anything that involves some sort of choice is broken down to simplistic black-or-white choices. It also comes across as being meaningless, as apparently nothing stops a purely evil character from bucking their trend at the last possible second to snag the Good ending. There’s precious little in terms of bonuses or perks to gain either as a benevolent warrior or a rampaging marauder.

Otherwise, stability issues have been noted on all consoles, with the PS5 being unable to render the game in native 4K thanks to nebulous issues encountered by Experiment 101. The PC seems the most stable of all options, with some reviewers needing some resolution scaling in order to offset their sub-30 FPS counts and others stating that a 2080 Super and a current-gen i7 with 16 GBs of RAM nets them a rock-solid 60 FPS with VSync enabled. Considering the environment’s detail levels, consider me cautiously optimistic for a no-holds-barred 1080p experience.

So, is it worth it? I haven’t played it yet, but it looks like one of those games you’re probably better off putting aside for a decent sale. Luckily for us all, the Steam Summer Sale is right around the corner, and THQ Nordic isn’t shy in gutting its price tags…

Based on what I’ve seen, it doesn’t seem like it’s worth a sixtyburger. Thirty or forty bucks, however, seems like a decent proposition.
