Chapter 11

“How’s your head feeling?” Claire asked quietly as she buckled the belt at Jamie’s shoulder, securing his arm tightly across his chest. He was still pale, but since she’d popped his joint back into place, he’d regained some of his colour at least.

“Like I’v a hundred wee men in there diggin’ for peat.” He grimaced scrunching his nose adorably and attempting to shrug. She stilled his movement with her hand, and sighed quietly.

“Your shoulder may be feeling better, but please, try not to move it.” She implored gently, “The joint’s weak and it won’t take much for it to slip back out again. You won’t be so tempted to try tomorrow, but for now, just be careful alright?”

He reached up to his shoulder, where her hand still lay, and squeezed it softly with his, drawing her attention. She looked at him, her heart in her eyes, and he smiled sadly and nodded.

“Aye, lass, I’ll be careful, an’ I want to thank ye…”

“There’s no need.”

“Aye, there is. I dinna deserve ye care, but I’m grateful for it.” He whispered as his thumb drew soft circles on the back of her hand. She felt the all too familiar lump swell painfully in her throat, and she shook her head and slowly slid her hand from his grasp.

“I need to check your head.” She murmured, desperate to tell him how sorry she was, but unable to tread on such dangerous ground. Her emotions were still too raw, and she’d only end up in tears again. “Do you mind?”

“Ye’v been poking an’ prodding me for the past half hour, an’ now ye ask?” He laughed hollowly, “No, mo gràdhag, I dinna mind.”

She nodded, and knelt down between his legs, before placing her hands on either side of his head. His eyes closed and he sighed softly as she gently worked her fingers across his scalp, massaging it as she felt for bumps or sore spots.

“Open you eyes.” She instructed as she ran her thumbs around his ears, across his temples and carefully lifted each eyelid again, checking his pupils.

“What’s the verdict?”

“There’s no bumps, but with a head injury that’s not necessarily a good thing. But there are no tender spots or signs of internal hem…bleeding.” She corrected herself. “So I think you just gave it a good rattle when you fell. I want to keep an eye on you though, and I’ll give you something for the pain when we get back to Leoch.”

At the mention of the castle, her stomach rolled, and for the first time since she’d left Willie in the field, she remembered what had prompted her frantic race towards Murtagh.

“What is it, Sassenach?” Jamie asked touching her arm. She removed her hands from his hair, silently cursing her bloody glass face, and glance around the clearing.

There were more men here than she’d realised and she recognised less than half of them. But friends or foes, they were all a good distance away, including Brian who was stood amongst them talking, yet keeping a watchful eye on his son.

The only man she couldn’t see was Murtagh, and if the Duke of Argyll was here, he didn’t stand out from the crowd.

“Where’s Donas?” She asked, turning back to Jamie, her voice only just audible.

“I dinna ken, he took off. Probably back at the stables by now.” He replied, shifting back slightly and slowly climbing to his feet. She follow him, and touching his arm, she guided him further away from the men.

“I…Jamie I think Dougal did something to him.” She began looking up at him, as she slowly and quietly explained what Willie had told her. As she spoke, Jamie’s face gradually changed, and whatever he saw in it, drew a watchful Brian over to them.

“What is it, Lad?” He asked, nodding politely to Claire but giving his full attention to his son.

Side by side like this, they were a sight to see.

As Jamie began quietly explaining what she’d told him, the sound of drawing swords whispered through the air, and the gathered men stood to attention. Before she could blink he’d shoved her behind him, and she found herself staring at the backs of the two Fraser men as they stood shoulder to shoulder, completely blocking her view.

Her heart pounded frantically in her chest, flooding her system with adrenaline rich blood, that heightened her senses, preparing her for flight or fight. So alert, she heard the exact moment that footsteps crept through the trees, and a loud groan went up around the group.

“S’only wee Tommy, ye addle pate.” Someone grouched, beginning a chorus of teasing Gaelic and rowdy laughter, as swords were sheathed and Jamie and his father parted like the Red Sea.

Her legs were shaking so badly she thought she’d collapse, but she locked her knees, standing tall as she watched the young lad scan the crowd then turn and run in their direction.

“Ye Grace,” he panted as he came to a stop before Brian and pointed back in the direction of the forest. “Murtagh found Milords horse. He’s hurt an’ he willna let us near, but ye need to see. Mutagen said it wasna an accident.”

Brian’s face suddenly turned so black and dangerous, that both Claire and Tommy instinctively took a step back. Never in her life had she seen a man so enraged, and as though they were attuned to his mood, every man in the group reacted, falling silent, awaiting orders.

“McKimmy, Graham, with me. The rest of ye prepare to leave. Dougal Mackenzie willna see this night fall.” He growled, falling into step beside Jamie as he strode in the direction Tommy had come from. “Show the way, boy.”

Tommy scrambled ahead of them, and still frozen on the spot with fear, it took Claire a moment to react. Headless of the consequences, she moved to life, hitching her skirts and taking off after Jamie.

“Stay here, Sassenach.” He ordered, frowning at her as she rushed into the tree line beside him.

“No. I’m the only other person Donas tolerates, and if he’s injured and spooked you’ll not be able to handle him with one arm. I’m coming.” She insisted, wishing her voice had been as commanding as his. But like her body it was weak, and trembled with fear and uncertainty.

It was one thing to stand up to an angry Jamie, but if Brian turned on her, she wouldn’t dare disobey. As warm as he had been as she tended to his son, right now he was so terrifying that she genuinely feared she might pee herself if he did.

Thankfully, he didn’t utter a word about it. Whether he was too lost in his rage or simply didn’t care she had no idea, but as his father remained silent, Jamie sighed and nodded.

“How bad is he, Tommy.” Jamie asked the lad as he ducked beneath low hanging branches, holding them out of the way for her to pass through.

“T’is no life or death, Milord, but I truly dinna ken. He flattened Murtagh when he tried to get close.”

“Is Murtagh, well?” Brian interrupted, as he glanced from Tommy to her, with a look that spoke a thousand words. Murtagh was now her priority, not the horse.

“Aye, Ye Grace. He’s just winded him is all.” Tommy nodded, as he pointed to a section of thick bush just ahead of them. “They’re just through there but t’is too thick, we have to go around.”

“McKimmy.”

“Aye, Ye Grace.”

The two warriors Brian had ordered along, drew their swords and hacked away at the bush, quickly creating a clearing for them to pass through. Claire noticed, absently, that Jamie had positioned her between himself and his father as they passed through the bush in single file, but she was distracted.

Amongst the worry and the fear that had been slowly consuming her, Tommy’s deferential treatment and the epithets he used in reference to the Fraser men, had slowly permeated her consciousness.

The links between Jamie’s reference to his father coming, and the imminent arrived of the Duke of Argyll, fused together. As did the fact that he ridden out to meet the Duke and was returning with Brian. But two plus two were not adding up to four.

She’d visited Inveraray Castle not two weeks ago, and she would swear on everything she held dear, that the Duchy was held by clan Campbell. She’d seen portraits and family trees dotted around the halls as she’d listened to the tour guide detail the clans history.

So how in the bloody hell was Brian Fraser the Duke of Argyll?

“There, Milord.” Tommy blurted needlessly, snapping Claire out of her throughs, as he tapped Jamie’s arm and pointed to a clearly agitated Donas.

He stood by a small stream, snorting and stamping his feet as he regarded the group before him. His eyes were almost rolling in his huge head, and while the sight completely broke her heart, it was the rivets of bright red blood on his flank that had her swallowing back bile.

“Soirbh mo giullan.” Jamie breathed, his hand outstretched as he slowly and carefully approached the horse. Donas snorted, shaking his head and backing away. “Soirbh, Soirbh, leig dhomh cuideachadh.”

Her eyes were riveted on Jamie as he attempted fruitlessly to tame the horse. But to her right she could hear the angry, hissing voices of Brian and Murtagh as they parried back and forth in rough Gaelic tongues. The thought of coming between them scared her half to death, but she needed to check on Murtagh and if they didn’t shut up, they’d get Jamie killed.

Taking a deep breath, trying to bolster her courage, she said a silent prayer for her life, and turned to stomp over to the men.

God help her!

“Are you trying to get him killed?” She spat quietly, her voice strong but her knees weak. Brian’s head whirled around towards her, his eyes as black as his hair, and looking like he was ready to murder her. But she held her ground, squaring her shoulder as they stood almost toe to toe. Her a good foot below him. “I understand that you’re both angry, but it won’t take much for Donas to rear, and if he does he’ll quickly finish the job that Dougal started. Have some sense and hold your tongues until he’s done.”

Brian’s eyes were narrowed into slits, and she knew beyond a doubt that she was a dead woman, that she was still breathing was a mere technicality. But she refused to back down, if she showed weakness now, any respect he might still hold for her would disappear, and like any good highlander, if she was going down, she was going down fighting.

Only for you Jamie Fraser!

Brian snorted in anger, reminding her alarmingly of Donas, as he threw his hands in the air and stormed off across the clearing, never having said a word. She watched him, her whole body trembling, as he stopped a few feet from the tree line, crossed his arms over his chest, and fixed his eyes on his son.

“Ye a braver man than I am, lassie.” Murtagh murmured quietly, doing nothing to disguise the laughter in his voice.

“On a scale of one to ten, how dead am I?” She whispered back as she turned to face him.

“Infinitely.”

“Great.” She sighed flexing her numb fingers as she glanced from Murtagh to Jamie and back again. “Tommy said you were hurt?”

“Nay, lass. He just knocked the wind out of me. Go, I ken ye itchin’ to help the lad. Just watch yerself, aye? That horse has the devil in him.”

Claire nodded and turned to slowly approach Jamie and Donas. He’d managed to get hold of his reigns but the big black beast was still skirting away from him, attempting to rear up on his hind legs, and one handed, Jamie was struggling.

“Hey now, boy.” She called gently as she slowly circled Jamie, coming in toward Donas from the left, hands outstretched, palms down. “Shush, easy.”

Her movements were as sure and steady as Jamie’s, any fear she’d felt at facing Brian, none existent as they worked together, slowly calming the massive horse. Jamie continued to speak to him softly in Gaelic so she kept quiet, just shushing gently as she placed her hand on his long neck and worked it slowly across his shoulder.

“Can ye get the straps?” Jamie asked his voice still soft and melodic as he held the bridle and brought Donas’ head to his.

She nodded, and though clearly still unhappy, the horse did nothing but stamp and snort as she quickly unfastened the buckles and heaved the heavy saddle off his back. The sight that met her was horrifying. Deep groves and holes slashed along his back, bright pink against the black and oozing blood.

Stepping back away from them slowly she placed the saddle on the ground and turned it over.

“Jamie.” She choked, her hand clasped over her mouth, trying to hold back the vomit that was slowly rising in her throat. Rows of sharp, pointed nails protruded from beneath the leather, some still partially hidden, others pushed right through.

She fell to her knees beside it and lifted the saddle examining the top and then the sides. The seat itself was clear, but the stitching along the left side had obviously been undone and restitched once the nails had been put in place.

They’d have taken time to work though the thick layers as Jamie rode, but once they had, they’d have cause the horse considerable pain. Jamie was silent, too enraged to speak as he continued to tend to Donas. But sensing a presence beside her, she looked up into the murderous eyes of his father.

Everything happened so fast from that point, and before she knew what was going on, she was back by the road and being lifted bodily on to the back of a horse by Brian Fraser.

“What?” She stuttered, looking behind her where Murtagh sat, reigns in hand ready to ride as the men around them prepared themselves for battle. “Jamie…”

“Go, Sassenach.” He ordered, raising a hand to undo the buckle at his shoulder.

“No. You can’t fight, you’re injured. Promise me…promise me you won’t fight!” She begged helplessly, trying to reach out and still his hand.

“Ye need to go an’ get yer bags before we arrive, we’ll no be staying at Leoch and ye canna leave em.” He implored stepping out of her reach, “Pack quickly and leave. Murtagh an’ Graham will see ye safe till I can meet up with ye.”

“Jamie no!” She cried helplessly, twisting to find Brian, hoping he’d talk some sense into him. “Your Grace, you can’t let him…”

“Do as ye told.” Brian barked scaring the living daylights out of her. She’d never seen a man so furious in her life. He was like a raging Viking warrior lusting for blood as he rallied his men and prepared for battle.

She felt Jamie’s large warm hand wrap around hers, and she turned back to him, wide eyed and terrified, as he brought it up to his lips and pressed them softly against her palm.

“Take her, Murtagh and dinna let her out of ye sight.”

“Aye, Lad.” Murtagh assented as he flicked the reigns and took off down the road, with Graham riding tall beside them.

CALLUM MACKENZIE! SHOW YERSELF AN’ YER BASTARD BROTHER!”

“Oh, shit!” Claire hissed, jumping out of her skin as the enraged roar of Brian Fraser echoed around the silent courtyard. Her bag slipped from her fingers, and tripping over her skirts, she turned and stumbled to the window, heart pounding and hands trembling with fear.

From the safety of her room three floors above, Claire watched with horror as the highland warriors gathered around their leader, swords drawn and ready to fight to the death. They should have left by now, but Murtagh had been held up by Mrs Fitz and, not wanting to alert the castle as to what was coming, he’d had to listen to her patently as she rattled on.

Despite the warmth of the day, she shivered, and wrapped her plaid around her shoulders. It was a terrifying sight and she’d be a fool not to recognize the real danger they were in if they didn’t leave soon. But despite her fear, her eyes searched the throng for Jamie. She found him quickly, as though drawn by an invisible force, and watched as he jumped down from the back of a horse.

He was clearly still in pain, but she breathed a sigh of relief, and smiled slightly as the stubborn idiot turned his back, as though there wasn’t a murderous rampage about to take place behind him, and approach an unsaddled, and still wary Donas, to gently run his hand down his neck.

“Annalise would be down there now, fussin’ over him an’ carryin’ on if she were here.” A quiet voice announced beside her, making her jump and whirl around.

Laoghaire, the blonde haired niece of Mrs Fitz stood beside her, looking out of the window, her clear blue eyes staring down at Jamie longingly. Claire’s eyes narrowed, then darted to her belongings on the bed, checking to see if her bags were closed. Seeing that they were, she breathed a silent sigh of relief and looked back at the younger girl.

She left the door unlocked, presuming Murtagh would stay at his post and not let anyone in. Obviously she’d been wrong, and so lost in her thoughts, she hadn’t heard her enter.

“I’m sorry?” She asked, confused. In her surprise, she hadn’t really heard what Laoghaire had said, and although she wanted to rip her eyes out for the way she looked at Jamie, she was trying to be polite.

“Jamie’s wife, Annalise, she’d be havin’ kittens if she saw him like that. She dinna travel wit’ him, always heavy wit’ a new bairn, ye ken. But I’v never seen a pair so in love, an’ she’d be fussin’ him like his mother if she were here.” She smiled, glancing at Claire out of the corner of her eye.

Claire could almost feel the blood draining from her face, and afraid her knees would give way, she grasped onto the stones of the window ledge and stared unseeing into the crowd.

“Are ye, alright, Claire?”

“Yes, I’m fine.” She answered her voice shaking and weak as the whole world imploded around her.

She knew, logically, that her heart still beat and that the world still spun steadily on it axes. But her blood had frozen in her veins, causing the thundering beat of her shattered heart to sound hollow and empty, as it rang in her ears.

It was ironic that, in the moment she lost him forever, she realised that, despite every rational reason against it, in those two short days riding with Jamie, she’d fallen in love with him. She let out a small empty laugh and shook her head.

“Is she at Lallybroch?” She whispered, watching him though the window as he moved to stand by his father. She didn’t really want to know, just the thought of him with another woman, his wife, made her sick to her stomach. But forewarned is forearmed and she needing to know everything before she faced him again, and to understand what would greet her when they arrived at his family estate.

Along with the position of his father, this was clearly the secret that Jamie had been keeping from her, and knowing she could never talk to him about his wife, Laoghaire was, unfortunately, her only option.

“Aye. Me brothers a tenant there, an I visited wit’ her a few times. Went last about a year ago, just after she had young Robert.”

The lump in her throat was unbearable and how she didn’t just fall to her knees and weep, she’d never know. Of course he didn’t just have a wife, he had to have children as well! She’d thought he was a better man than that, she’d hurt for his pain, castigated herself, and been prepared to apologise, while he was nothing but an adulterous pig. All the anger and hurt she’d felt when he’d left her on the couch, returned ten fold.

She hated him, with every fraction of loved he’d made her feel, she hated him.

“How many children do they have?” She managed to force out, feigning interest and barely able to see through the tears in her eyes as Callum slowly crossed the courtyard towards Brian.

“Oh, three on me last count. Two boys an’ a lass, an only marrit four years.” She laughed flashing Claire a wink that had bile rising in her throat.

“Enough, Laoghaire!” Murtagh growled as the door slammed back against the wall, making both woman jump. “We’re leaving, Lass.”

Swiftly moving to the bed he collected her bags in one hand, and stood back, motioning for her to leave the room. She looked from him to the door where Willie and Graham stood waiting and watching, their hands on their swords ready for action.

“I’m not sure…”

“Move, Claire now! I’ll no tell ye again.” He ordered, striding towards her and grabbing her wrist. She tried to yank it free, but he held tight, and pulled her from the room. “Dinna judge what ye dinna ken.” He warned, releasing her and motioning her forward.

Although scared hurt and confused, she wasn’t stupid, and hadn’t been planning on refusing to leave. So she nodded, and feeling more lost and alone than she had since she arrived, followed the men into the unknown.

Walter McCrae put his foot in it big-style and a week later would later pay a terrible price.

“The international game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was played early in late February  and on March 2 Celtic turned up for a league match at Rugby Park to play Kilmarnock, where Walter McCrae doubled up as the club’s trainer.

“We hammered them 6-0 with, as I recall, Willie Wallace scoring four goals with others from Bobby Lennox and young substitute Jimmy Quinn. But everyone’s Man of the Match was, without question, Wee Jinky.

“He tore their defence to shreds. He played like a man possessed. We all knew the capabilities of our wee genius, of course, but that afternoon he went into overdrive and only an Elephant Gun could have stopped him from running amok. He twisted, teased and tortured the Killie back lot and I knew what was going on in his mind – he was going to make Walter McCrae suffer.

“The Wee Man looked fairly pleased with himself as we came off at the end. I was walking beside him when he spotted McCrae in the home dug-out. ‘No’ bad for an effin’ linesman, eh, Walter?’ beamed Jinky.”

Stories of Jimmy Johnstone are the stuff of legend. One of the greatest accolades Jinky earned, however, wasn’t at his beloved Paradise or even on these shores. On June 7, 1967, Celtic, still basking in the reflective glory of their excellent European Cup triumph, took the team to the Bernabeu Stadium to provide the opposition for the legendary Alfredo di Stefano.

Just to be inviited to play in such exalted company in a game for one of the world’s greatest-ever footballers was an honour. To go to their fortress and win 1-0 while pulverising the opposition was quite unbelievable. Even the normally-hostile Spanish fans had to applaud Celtic that balmy evening.

“Ole! Ole!” was the cry that rang round the stadium, but it wasn’t a Real Madrid performer being showered with praise. The standing ovations that night were for Jimmy Johnstone. He was unstoppable – a 5ft 4in bundle of mischief and magic that bewildered a Spanish rearguard that wasn’t too used to being taken apart, especially in front of their own support.

However, Johnstone never embraced a great respect for reputations and he simply dismantled the line of defenders who were put in front of him that evening. It was a virtuoso performance that would have been more than fit to grace a World Cup Final. If Pele or Maradona or Cruyff or Best or even di Stefano had delivered such flamboyant entertainment it would have been hailed as the most outstanding individual display ever witnessed. “It really was that good,” added Gemmell.

Forget that this was labelled a Testimonial Match. Real Madrid had won the European Cup the previous year, beating Partizan Belgrade 2-1. They wanted to let everyone know they were still the true rulers of all they surveyed. In their minds, they were still the best in Europe and not a bunch of upstarts from Glasgow.

Real gave it their best shot, but Johnstone and Co were not to be denied another moment of glory. They, too, were at the Bernabeu to win and they did just that when Bobby Lennox flashed a low drive into the net from 12 yards after a sublime pass from, you’ve guessed, Jimmy Johnstone.

Jim Craig recalled: “I still laugh at the memory of Jinky the morning after we had played Real Madrid. He had arranged to go on holiday with his wife Agnes right after that game.

“Jinky could do no wrong that night and I well remember a Real Madrid defender, Grosso, I think, came racing out of defence in an effort to clatter the Wee Man. He had had enough of Jinky’s one-man show and he was going to sort him out.

“Yes, he did wallop Jimmy, but if he thought that was the end of Jinky’s meanderings that night he was so wrong. I recall him trotting back into defence, thinking to himself: ‘That takes care of that.’ His face was a picture, though, when he looked over his shoulder to see the Wee Man bouncing back to his feet to take the free-kick. I suppose he thought his opponent would fold under such treatment, but he didn’t know our Jimmy Johnstone.

“The following day, Wee Jinky was in good form as he prepared to go on holiday. I helped him down with the suitcases and he and Agnes jumped into the waiting taxi. I had assumed he was going to the airport, but I heard him say: ‘Benidorm, driver!’

“The taxi driver almost fainted. Possibly geography wasn’t one of Jinky’s strong points, but from Madrid to the holiday resort it was about 300 miles as the crow flies. Some hire!”

His great friend Bobby Lennox added: “Jinks was the man. He had a special gift and he worked on that gift. He had all the talents in the world, but he also trained hard to make sure his fitness levels were high.

“Stanley Matthews, the legendary Stoke City and England outside-right, and Real Madrid’s Alfredo di Stefano were two of his particular favourite players as he grew up. He bought a book by Matthews on how to play on the wing. He must have absorbed everything and added a few chapters of his own unique skills.

“And it gave him great pleasure to be with the Celtic team that played in Di Stefano’s Testimonial Match shortly after we won the European Cup. The Wee Man was unbelievable that night.

“He always knew how to rise to the occasion.”

Dead Ram Walking: Treating Sick Sheep Symptoms

By Laurie Ball-Gisch – One day the ram was walking around and looking totally healthy — the next day he was just standing under a tree with his head hanging down. I approached him, hoping he’d lift his head and move away from me, but he didn’t. I knew I’d have to examine him for sick sheep symptoms.

I looked him in the eye and exclaimed, “Hoss, what’s wrong?” And he just collapsed, looking as if he’d already given up and was going to soon be a dead ram. My husband Daryl and I had to drag him into a barn stall, as he could no longer walk, and where we could more easily treat and feed him. We went through our usual sick sheep symptoms checklist to try to assess what was wrong.

1. Check eye membranes to look for signs of anemia and hence parasites; eye membranes were nice and red, but we wormed him anyway, as he’d not been wormed since earlier in the summer.

2. Nasal discharge? No.

3. Coughing? No.

4. Diarrhea? No.

5. Raspy, labored breathing? No. But there was severe lethargy, weakness and lack of appetite.

6. Injury? Possibly, but no outward signs of bleeding. His ribs didn’t feel broken. No swelling anywhere.

What to do for treatment? After all, the ram in question was eight years old and it had been a brutally hot summer. Maybe “just” old age?

Of course, we wanted to treat him; we will always continue to assist an animal as best we can as long as it’s still breathing. But at this point, I also braced myself to lose him because he showed no will to live.

So we went with the proverbial “refrigerator” treatment to treat his sick sheep symptoms, which means pretty much give him everything we have and hope something will help.

I am sure many who read this might cringe, but we have to be realistic. There are few veterinarians nowadays available with experience in small ruminants. And it seems that these situations always arise on weekends when veterinary offices aren’t open anyway.

So we gave Hoss an antibiotic; we treated him for parasite species outside of the normal realm we usually see here on our farm, including meningeal worm and lungworm (just in case!) and we gave him vitamin shots: B complex, A, D and E, and also BoSE.

Although he wasn’t grinding his teeth, we also gave him an anodyne, in case the ram was in pain. (Check with your sheep veterinarian on the possibility of obtaining and using fast-acting pain relief and anti-inflammatory drugs. Some have reported success with items such as Flunixin—trade name Banamine®—a prescription medication with no FDA-established withdrawal/withholding times for sheep. As with any extra-label drug usage or “ELDU,” each use of such medications legally requires supervision of a licensed vet.—Editor.)

I put fresh hay and water in his pen, but he showed no interest in eating. We gave him a 60cc oral drench of Gatorade for the sugar energy and electrolytes and hoped for the best.

I checked on him every few hours throughout the day, but no change. In fact, he just lay there with his head down and flies swarming him.

At that point, I started to worry about flystrike because he was so still. Several times a day I kept up with the oral drenches, switching between fresh water, and sometimes using electrolytes. I tried giving him yogurt to restart the rumen, but that didn’t help.

Five days into his not eating or drinking, I was getting nearly frantic. Every time I walked out to check on him I was expecting to find a dead ram. I even told my husband it was probably time to get the hole dug.

It was turning very frustrating because it seemed there was nothing I could do for my ram. It’s awfully hard to watch an animal lie there and starve to death. Sometimes we can treat the presenting issue/illness (i.e. parasite overload, pneumonia, etc.), but getting the sick animal to start eating again is an entirely different issue. The longer its rumen is empty, the harder it is to get it started again. And if that sheep doesn’t want to drink or eat, it can quickly become dehydrated as well.

Brewing Up A Cure to Treat His Sick Sheep Symptoms

On day six of my poor ram just lying there—and after having done all we could think to do (including having consulted with my veterinarian who had nothing else to offer me)—I suddenly decided to give him a beer. I’m not really sure where that idea came from other than I knew that to restart a rumen you have to introduce “healthy” micro-flora. What about yeast? Since the daily spoonfuls of yogurt weren’t working, I decided maybe beer would be something that might help—and probably wouldn’t hurt.

I rummaged through the basement to see if we had an old can of beer in the root cellar and found some we used to keep around for Papa Willie before he departed this life.

Soon enough, I walked out the door with the beer, a jar and a 60 cc drenching syringe. My 12-year-old daughter saw me and said “Mom, what are you doing with a beer?” I told her I was going to give it to Hoss and that it might make him better but if it didn’t, maybe he’d die happier.

I sat down next to Hoss and loaded my syringe: Two ounces of beer at a time (tricky because of the foam). I forced open the side of his mouth and put it up over the tongue and made him swallow. By this time he was so weak he no longer was even fighting me over his daily oral treatments. I gave him the whole can.

The next day he was still alive, and was actually sitting up, rather than lying with his head on the ground.

I gave him another beer.

The next morning when I went out, he was standing up! I put some fresh hay in front of him and he actually started to nibble on it. Later that day he was wandering around the large paddock he was sharing with the alpacas and was nibbling at grass.

I gave him a third beer on day four of the beer treatment for his sick sheep symptoms, and from then on he was eating and drinking on his own! Within two weeks he was strong enough to go back into the rams’ pasture. (We knew it was time for his transfer back to the bachelors’ fields because he was trying to bust down the gates to get in with my Leicester ewes.)

Hoss at eight years old, fully recovered and having successfully bred his quota of ewes.

A Beer A Day Keeps The…

We all know the downside to drinking beer, but there was obviously something positive about it too, that helped my ram recover so well.

After his pretty miraculous recovery, I decided to do some research into the health benefits of beer. I found out that beer was first used as a homeopathic remedy during the time of the Egyptian Pharaohs.

I found an online article on the Fox News website dated March 15, 2012:

“Despite beer’s bad reputation, it actually has a number of natural antioxidants and vitamins that can help prevent heart disease and even rebuild muscle. It also has one of the highest energy contents of any food or drink….

“If you’re worried about dehydration, keep in mind that beer is 93 percent water. Also, according to a Spanish study, beer may actually provide better hydration than H2O alone when you’re sweating it out under the sun.

“…For health benefits, a dark beer is the better choice. Dark beers tend to have the most antioxidants, which help reverse cellular damage that occurs naturally in the body. A recent study published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture has also found that dark beer has higher iron content compared to lighter beers. …Iron is an essential mineral that our bodies need. Iron is a part of all cells and does many jobs including carrying oxygen from our lungs throughout the rest of our bodies.

“Another good choice is microbrews, which are healthier than mass-produced cans, because they have more hops. Hops contain polyphenols, which help lower cholesterol, fight cancer and kill viruses.”

Imagine if I’d given Hoss an expensive microbrew instead of an old can of Red White & Blue beer! He’d probably have recovered a couple of days quicker!

Another online resource written by Lisa Collier Cool, January 9, 2012 on the website health.yahoo.net reported:

“A Dutch study, performed at the TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute, found that beer-drinking participants had 30 percent higher levels of vitamin B6 levels in their blood than their non-drinking counterparts, and twice as much as wine drinkers. Beer also contains vitamin B12 and folic acid.”

After reading these reports, I decided that beer might be the drench of choice for any sheep that is sick and off feed, with one exception: One that has eaten too much grain. Adding a fermented drink to a grain-poisoned, or bloated rumen would not be a good idea.

I also would recommend that a smaller sized sheep (Hoss weighs about 200 pounds) receive less than the 12 ounces I was giving to Hoss.

One more website gave a cheerful assessment of the health benefits of beer, offering the following information:

B-Vitamins = Improved Vital Systems—Another of the more plentiful vitamins and minerals in craft beer is its range of B vitamins. In addition to being a rich source of potassium, craft beers contain folic acid (great for vascular health) and B12, which plays a key role in the formation of blood and the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system.

Carbohydrates + Fiber = Bodily Balance—Because it’s packed with carbohydrates and dietary fiber derived from barley, oats, etc. beer is often referred to as liquid bread. In the end, carbohydrates can provide easily obtained energy…”—GreatClubs.com

After getting Hoss back to health this fall, I had several inquiries about treating sick sheep symptoms. One friend had a ewe lamb that had gotten highly parasitized and was thin and sick; even though she had been treated with dewormers, she would not eat. I suggested that they try beer after relaying my experience with Hoss’s recovery. She reported to me a few days later that her ewe was up and eating again and doing very well.

I got an e-mail from a lady in Australia that had read my article about apple cider vinegar as a treatment for sick sheep symptoms. Though she’d tried that on her sick ewe, the ewe would still not eat or drink. There ended up being other issues wrong with her ewe that were beyond repair, but she did give the ewe a beer and reported back to me the following:

“My sister and I decided on Wednesday to do the beer drench. We did it three days in a row, and we both concluded it really works. It does stimulate their appetite; the poor baby was grazing around where she was sitting, on her last morning. And she was actually hungry…And she was chewing her cud constantly.”

The next day I got the following note:

“Just thought I would give you an update on my poor patient. Sad news: She had to be put down yesterday. I am beside myself, but she lost total use of her hind legs, could not get up by herself at all.

“…Even though we did not get a positive outcome, we both feel the beer drench is a success. She just had other problems, on top of not eating. Thanks Laurie, for sharing your thoughts with me. Very much appreciated. We will incorporate the ‘beer solution’ from now on. Very useful.”

As always, I want to make sure everybody knows I’m no veterinarian and that these experiences treating sick sheep symptoms are purely anecdotal and not scientific in nature. But anybody who has watched an animal starve to death after treating it with all they can think to do (and all their veterinarian can think to do), may well admit that giving the sheep a swig or two of beer might trump teetotal abstinence if it revives its appetite and buys it time for a real recovery.

As for Hoss, he recovered enough to have his own group of ewes for sheep breeding season, and the clean-up ram showed none needed to be rebred. Not bad results from a “dead ram walking.”

Several times each day, Willie Haynes (BSES 08) sees the sacrifices made by a population that is pushing toward reaching its full potential. Meaningful moves forward occur in 60-minute increments for Haynes and the wounded warriors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

As a traumatic brain injury specialist and occupational therapist, Haynes starts his mornings with a daily schedule that is broken down into one-hour treatment sessions.

“It’s important for people to understand the sacrifice our wounded warrior population gives,” Haynes says. “It’s interesting to see the wounded warriors’ determination and their ability to adapt to any situation.”

The situations that Haynes evaluates include patients with any sort of neurological deficit or movement issue caused by issues such as battlefield injuries, motor vehicle accidents, stroke and multiple sclerosis. When a patient is dealing with a neurological disease or disorder, Haynes steps in with a two-part remedy. He works on improving physical strength, balance and mobility as well as sharpening a wide range of cognitive skills.

“I do a lot of cognitive rehabilitation working with traumatic brain injury patients,” Haynes says. “We work on short-term memory, long-term memory, reading comprehension skills and life skills.”

That includes working on basic functional components of everyday living.

“Can a patient process information they are receiving functionally?” Haynes asks. “Can a person read the instructions on a recipe and follow them?”

As a patient tackles those sorts of tasks in a kitchen, Haynes is focused on details such as problem solving and the patient’s personal safety. It’s all part of a process that also depends on an individual’s place on the functional spectrum.

“I might have a low-functioning patient who needs a maximum amount of verbal cues,” he says. “I am trying to draw them to a place where they can process what I am asking them to do. Another stroke or traumatic brain injury patient might have more movement disorders. They might not have the balance to stand and wash their hands or move around.”

Many incidents can lead to head trauma and a traumatic brain injury. It may be a battlefield injury or an emergency situation much closer to home. Every day, 153 people die from injuries that include a traumatic brain injury component, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Traumatic brain injuries contribute to about 30 percent of all injury-based deaths. Falls are the leading cause of these injuries, accounting for nearly half of all TBI-related emergency department visits.

For occupational therapists who work in densely populated metro areas, the details of a TBI can run the gamut from a fall to a fistfight to a gunshot-wound victim.

Shawn Phipps is the chief strategic development officer at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Los Angeles. Calculating the damage done by gunshot wounds is part of the process in many cases from Los Angeles to Washington D.C.

“The medical complexity of traumatic brain injury is similar at Walter Reed and on the West Coast,” Phipps says. “That blast from a gunshot wound often penetrates the entire brain. We are helping patients gain function in all sections of life. There are often cognitive and psychological issues. You are dealing with the physical and mental aspects of helping that person get to the highest level of life possible.”

Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center serves a dual purpose. In addition to the patient treatment aspect, the facility also functions as a teaching hospital. In that respect, the most challenging cases provide educational tools for occupational therapists in training. Phipps says Rancho Los Amigos and Walter Reed are both great training grounds for students.

“It gives you an opportunity to treat the worst of the worst,” he says. “Clinicians help those students learn from seeing how those injuries present. Students go back to school, and they benefit from that teaching.”

Haynes works with a patient on a hand-and-eye-coordination task using boxing gloves and on visual motor skills for activities of daily living at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

Many of those opportunities to assist patients on the journey to reaching their highest quality of life come from the medical advances that have enabled more patients to be saved in operating rooms before they reach the care provided by occupational therapists.

“Fifty years ago, many of these patients would not have survived,” Phipps says. “Now with the medical technology we have … having the benefit of keeping people alive and keeping them well is unbelievable even after a severe injury.”

OT Experience in Ghana

Part of Haynes’ education as an occupational therapist happened 5,800 miles away from his hometown of Louisville, Mississippi. Haynes is a program manager for an outside non-profit organization that helps provide access to rehabilitation services for people with disabilities in developing countries. A couple of co-workers and Haynes were interested in providing occupational therapy abroad. One of those friends has family from Liberia. She started traveling and doing volunteer work for rehabilitation clinics, which set the stage for Haynes to help children and their families in West Africa.

“She came back with the idea of doing her own thing, and she reached out to me,” Haynes says. “She developed the program, and we helped her with carrying out the mission.”

That took Haynes to Ghana on his first rehabilitation mission trip. The destination was a teaching hospital in Cape Coast. Although the hospital facilities were well established, the concept of occupational therapy was new to the area. Haynes and his peers provided assistance and served as mentors for a local, recent occupational therapy graduate.

Haynes worked in pediatrics, helping kids with feeding, swallowing and their physical movements and positioning. He and the team members also donated toys to add some fun to the treatment and help keep the kids engaged along the way.

Aside from those clinical interactions with the young patients in pediatrics, Haynes navigated occasional language barriers with the help of the other members of the hospital staff to communicate with parents and other family members.

“It was a very awakening experience for me,” he says, “mostly because they valued our opinions and our time and our presence. I remember walking into the clinic on the third day and a child I had treated on the first day. His mom had traveled to the Cape Coast area. She was asking questions and had waited to see us. I appreciated that. [Patients’ families] were open to new ideas. Not to say that we don’t do that in the U.S., but it was just coming from a different perspective. They treated me like family. They trusted me with their child.”

Before Haynes experienced that career and personal growth in Ghana, he took early steps on that journey in Oxford while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. Interacting with fellow students through the University Judicial Council, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the National Pan-Hellenic Council Executive Board contributed to Haynes becoming an INROADS scholar. Haynes took courses during his sophomore year that showed him the differences between physical and occupational therapy and how aspects of occupational therapy fit well with his career passions.

“Ole Miss prepared me for the world,” Haynes says. “Being a young man, the university taught me to embrace people from all walks of life; it taught me how to network and give back to the community. I am still talking to people — different professionals — from all walks of life.”

Haynes carries those moments with him during his daily appointments with wounded warriors at Walter Reed. The level of independence for an individual depends on where he or she falls on the injury scale. For some, being able to spend four hours independently before a caregiver arrives is a big step. Others are aiming to live on their own and return to school or a job. Seeing those goals met provides perspective for Haynes.

“It’s challenging, and it teaches me how to be flexible and communicate effectively,” Haynes says. “It teaches patience and determination. The work made me more open to challenges. Regardless of what I encounter, there can be no excuses when it comes to every day.”

Evaluating a patient’s ability to take on a new challenge sometimes involves teaming up with other departmental staff members at Walter Reed. The summer climate in Maryland provides opportunities for patients to pick flowers, plant vegetables or maintain gardens. Winter months can mean a more strenuous test for some patients.

“We might team up with the recreational department to do adaptive skiing,” Haynes says. “Can this person balance and learn a new skill?”

Closer to home, Mississippi residents who are navigating their own roads to recovery after a traumatic brain injury often rely on guidance from the Brain Injury Association based in Jackson. For those patients, working up to being able to do a few hours of rehabilitation a day is part of the process of being cleared to either go to a post-acute inpatient rehab facility or being able to return home.

Because there is not a post-acute residential rehab facility in Mississippi, the treatment plan often includes patients going to Louisiana or other neighboring states. House Bill 478, which defines a post-acute residential brain injury rehab facility for licensing purposes, passed a House vote in January and a Senate vote in March before it was signed and approved. It went into effect on July 1.

“Hopefully, in the next year, we will have a post-acute facility,” says Lee Jenkins, executive director of the Brain Injury Association of Mississippi. “A lot of times,family members of patients will call us and ask where they should go now. We act as a facilitator for families and try to hook them up to rehab services.”

The association also assists people with spinal cord injuries. Sometimes, the nature of a brain injury can make the need for assistance less apparent to casual observers.

“There is a little more available for people with a spinal cord injury,” Jenkins says. “Sometimes a brain injury is an ‘invisible injury.’”

That “invisible injury” can show up at home or abroad on a battlefield. With a mild traumatic brain injury (or concussion), although the initial symptoms can appear to be relatively mild, a range of issues can persist if left undiagnosed and untreated.

“From the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, we have seen unique blast injuries,” Phipps says. “There is a high incidence of mild traumatic brain injury. It is less obvious than a gunshot [injury].”

It is all part of the spectrum of patient injuries that Haynes has witnessed since his arrival at Walter Reed three years ago, and it is a team effort.

“We converse back and forth as departments,” Haynes says. “When you see people doing great work, it motivates me. … I encourage people to go into occupational therapy. It brings about pride and a sense of responsibility. I am happy to say I am an occupational therapist, and I work at a great institution with wounded warriors and active duty military personnel.”

Today we reveal the tale of how Wee Jinky got his own back on someone who had annoyed him ever so slightly.

WHEN Jimmy Johnstone had his dander up he was just about unstoppable. Those truly astounding, spectacular serpentine-weaving runs had to be seen to be believed.

England and Liverpool captain Emlyn Hughes once complained of having “twisted blood” after facing the Wee Man in an international at Hampden Park in 1974 as Scotland triumphed 2-0.

Jinky, as his team-mates were only too well aware, was a highly temperamental bloke and you upset him at your peril. Scotland trainer Walter McCrae couldn’t have been too aware of that side of the Celtic great as he prepared the international squad for an important game against England in 1968, the year after the Scots had overcome the world champions 3-2 at Wembley.

A victory was a must at Hampden for the Scots, but it was going to be achieved without the help of Scotland’s most skilful player, Jimmy Johnstone. Injury had prevented him from playing at Wembley in 1967 and, on this occasion, the international manager, Bobby Brown, had made up his mind to go with Chelsea’s Charlie Cooke in preference to the Celt.

The blissfully unaware McCrae then conjured up his outstanding faux pas as Scotland trained at their HQ at Largs. As luck would have it, Celtic were along the Ayrshire coast at their usual haunt at Seamill at the same time. The SFA asked for permission to play Celtic in a bounce game against the international line-up as a special training session.

The Parkhead powers-that-be agreed, but Jimmy was far from happy. “I’m no’ interested,” he said. “I’m no’ playing.” However, the Wee Man dutifully turned up to watch the session and McCrae then, unintentionally, made one of football’s great blunders – he asked Jinky to be a linesman!

Tommy Gemmell, with the Scottish squad, recalled: “I think you could say Jimmy let Walter know he was not interested in running the line, in any shape or form. For a start, two of his best pals at Celtic at the time were Bobby Lennox and Willie O’Neill. They would have been taking part in the game and Jinky would have been running up and down the touchline with his wee flag. Jimmy Johnstone? A linesman? Oh, dear!

“Quite apart from anything else, I suspect any world-class player would rebel, as Jimmy certainly did, at the idea of being used as a linesman. Would someone at the English FA have asked Bobby Charlton to run the line? Would anyone at the Irish FA have been daft enough to ask George Best to act as a linesman? Of course, not. Walter McCrae put his foot in it big-style and a week later would later pay a terrible price.

“The international game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was played early in late February  and on March 2 Celtic turned up for a league match at Rugby Park to play Kilmarnock, where Walter McCrae doubled up as the club’s trainer.

“We hammered them 6-0 with, as I recall, Willie Wallace scoring four goals with others from Bobby Lennox and young substitute Jimmy Quinn. But everyone’s Man of the Match was, without question, Wee Jinky.

“He tore their defence to shreds. He played like a man possessed. We all knew the capabilities of our wee genius, of course, but that afternoon he went into overdrive and only an Elephant Gun could have stopped him from running amok. He twisted, teased and tortured the Killie back lot and I knew what was going on in his mind – he was going to make Walter McCrae suffer.

“The Wee Man looked fairly pleased with himself as we came off at the end. I was walking beside him when he spotted McCrae in the home dug-out. ‘No’ bad for an effin’ linesman, eh, Walter?’ beamed Jinky.”

Stories of Jimmy Johnstone are the stuff of legend. One of the greatest accolades Jinky earned, however, wasn’t at his beloved Paradise or even on these shores. On June 7, 1967, Celtic, still basking in the reflective glory of their excellent European Cup triumph, took the team to the Bernabeu Stadium to provide the opposition for the legendary Alfredo di Stefano.

Just to be inviited to play in such exalted company in a game for one of the world’s greatest-ever footballers was an honour. To go to their fortress and win 1-0 while pulverising the opposition was quite unbelievable. Even the normally-hostile Spanish fans had to applaud Celtic that balmy evening.

“Ole! Ole!” was the cry that rang round the stadium, but it wasn’t a Real Madrid performer being showered with praise. The standing ovations that night were for Jimmy Johnstone. He was unstoppable – a 5ft 4in bundle of mischief and magic that bewildered a Spanish rearguard that wasn’t too used to being taken apart, especially in front of their own support.

However, Johnstone never embraced a great respect for reputations and he simply dismantled the line of defenders who were put in front of him that evening. It was a virtuoso performance that would have been more than fit to grace a World Cup Final. If Pele or Maradona or Cruyff or Best or even di Stefano had delivered such flamboyant entertainment it would have been hailed as the most outstanding individual display ever witnessed. “It really was that good,” added Gemmell.

Forget that this was labelled a Testimonial Match. Real Madrid had won the European Cup the previous year, beating Partizan Belgrade 2-1. They wanted to let everyone know they were still the true rulers of all they surveyed. In their minds, they were still the best in Europe and not a bunch of upstarts from Glasgow.

Real gave it their best shot, but Johnstone and Co were not to be denied another moment of glory. They, too, were at the Bernabeu to win and they did just that when Bobby Lennox flashed a low drive into the net from 12 yards after a sublime pass from, you’ve guessed, Jimmy Johnstone.

Jim Craig recalled: “I still laugh at the memory of Jinky the morning after we had played Real Madrid. He had arranged to go on holiday with his wife Agnes right after that game.

“Jinky could do no wrong that night and I well remember a Real Madrid defender, Grosso, I think, came racing out of defence in an effort to clatter the Wee Man. He had had enough of Jinky’s one-man show and he was going to sort him out.

“Yes, he did wallop Jimmy, but if he thought that was the end of Jinky’s meanderings that night he was so wrong. I recall him trotting back into defence, thinking to himself: ‘That takes care of that.’ His face was a picture, though, when he looked over his shoulder to see the Wee Man bouncing back to his feet to take the free-kick. I suppose he thought his opponent would fold under such treatment, but he didn’t know our Jimmy Johnstone.

“The following day, Wee Jinky was in good form as he prepared to go on holiday. I helped him down with the suitcases and he and Agnes jumped into the waiting taxi. I had assumed he was going to the airport, but I heard him say: ‘Benidorm, driver!’

“The taxi driver almost fainted. Possibly geography wasn’t one of Jinky’s strong points, but from Madrid to the holiday resort it was about 300 miles as the crow flies. Some hire!”

His great friend Bobby Lennox added: “Jinks was the man. He had a special gift and he worked on that gift. He had all the talents in the world, but he also trained hard to make sure his fitness levels were high.

“Stanley Matthews, the legendary Stoke City and England outside-right, and Real Madrid’s Alfredo di Stefano were two of his particular favourite players as he grew up. He bought a book by Matthews on how to play on the wing. He must have absorbed everything and added a few chapters of his own unique skills.

“And it gave him great pleasure to be with the Celtic team that played in Di Stefano’s Testimonial Match shortly after we won the European Cup. The Wee Man was unbelievable that night.

“He always knew how to rise to the occasion.”
