There's so much beauty in watching the life series backwards. Im not including Limited Life in this but if you start with double life and work back....
Scar and Grian being tired reluctant partners that annoy the shit out of each other, stretching and snapping like a rubber band. They make it work but it's work, its caring for the other and hating them too. By the end, Grian causes their death the same way he worried Scar would.
Then you start Last Life. They're divorced. Grian is immediately playing with Scar and playing their relationship for a bonus. Scar returns the favor, taking something from Grian to get even. They spend the season fighting and bickering from across fortified walls. Not friends, not enemies, but a third, gayer resistance towards each other. Toward the end they work together because they have to, they're in the same position. Its a bitter alliance through to their seperate ends.
AND THEN!!! THIRD LIFE COMES AROUND
And so fast, Grian is joking around and then owes his first life to Scar. Its not purposeful in that way, but it happened. And they spend a while struggling to find a way to work together as an actual team. Scar is a dangerous man from nearly the beginning, Grian is almost just as much so. By the time Grian loses his first life, he's too far in. He's committed so much to Scar and to the Desert that he can't just Leave. So he stays. They build it up, they protect each other. They start to actually Care. Not just a self-preservation care, a real care. And when the end comes, its just them. Its just them together. And Scar knows everything he's put Grian through and says "Just do it" and Grian is Pleading for them to both win together. The ghosts demand a fight, so they honor their time together and then burn it all. Then, bare fisted, they fight until one is dead. One is dead while the other screams he's sorry.
