Burriac, a viewpoint, a castle... history in ruins

 top of the mountain of Sant Vicenç offers a panoramic view of the plain and the Catalan coastline of the so-called barony of Maresme, which also allowed control of the pass between the coast and the inland lands near the city of Mataró, the Roman Iluro.

Presumably, the watchtower attracted the attention of the Layetans, one of the Iberian peoples who dominated the territory when the Romans arrived in the area in their continuous expansion of their Empire.

However, it is not until the 11th century that the first historical reference appears, a document that refers to the cession of the castle of Sant Vicenç by the Countess Ermessenda of Barcelona to her son Berenguer Ramon I, in 1017.

The origin of the castle is possibly a defence tower, but also, given its name, perhaps a pre-Romanesque chapel consecrated to the saint after whom the mountain is named, which is mentioned at the end of the 9th century in a document on the sale of vineyards.

The name Burriac, by which it is known today, dates from 1313. The origin of its previous name, Sant Vicenç, is attributed on the one hand to the mountain that crowns it and on the other to the family that owned it, the Santvicenç family.

It was precisely in the 14th century when the property fell into the hands of the Desbosc family from Barcelona. It was still only a castle with military functions. However, in 1471, King John II of Aragon granted it to Pere Joan Ferrer, who called himself Baron of Maresme and lived there, which led him to make alterations to adapt it to its new residential function.

The enlargement increased the size of the castle until it had two fortified enclosures crowned by the keep, which today is still one of its identifying features in the surrounding landscape.

The barony of Maresme in the hands of the Ferrer family lasted less than half a century, as the Desbosc family recovered it in 1532 and kept it among their properties until 1671. In the following century, the 18th century, the castle was abandoned.

The new constructions left little space for the chapel, which was squeezed between the new buildings, although its survival is proven until 1836, when it is recorded that a mass was held before it fell into ruins years later, a process that had probably already begun to affect the rest of the castle. The 19th and 20th centuries sealed the ruinous state of Burriac.

Castell de Burriac

El cim de la muntanya de Sant Vicenç ofereix una visió panoràmica de la plana i de la línia costanera catalana de l’anomenada baronia del Maresme, que a més a més permetia controlar el pas entre la costa i les terres de l’interior a prop de la ciutat de Mataró, la Iluro romana.

Presumiblement, l’atalaia va atreure l’atenció dels laietans, un dels pobles ibers que dominaven el territori quan els romans van arribar a la zona en la seva ampliació continua del seu Imperi.

No obstant no és fins el segle XI que apareix la primera referència històrica, un document que fa referència a la cessió del castell de San Vicenç per part de la comtessa Ermessenda de Barcelona al seu fill Berenguer Ramon I, el 1017.

L’origen del castell és possiblement una torre de defensa, però també, atés al seu nom, potser una capella preromànica consagrada al sant que dóna nom a la muntanya, que és citada a finals del segle IX en un document de venda de vinyes.

El nom de Burriac, pel qual se’l coneix actualment, data de 1313. L’origen del seu nom anterior, de Sant Vicenç, és atribuït per una part a la muntanya que corona i per una altra a la família que va posseir-lo, els Santvicenç.

Va ser precisament al segle XIV quan la propietat va recaure en la família barcelonina Desbosc. Encara només es tractava d’un castell amb funcions militars. No obstant, el rei Joan II d’Aragó el va infeudar el 1471 a Pere Joan Ferrer, que es feia dir baró del Maresme i hi va residir, la qual cosa va fer que hi fés reformes per adequar-lo a la seva nova funció residencial.

L’ampliació va fer que les dimensions del castell creixéssin fins a tenir dos recintes fortificats coronats per la torre de l’homenatge, que avui dia encara constitueix un dels seus trets identificadors en el paisatge que l’envolta.

La baronia del Maresme en mans dels Ferrer va durar menys de mig segle, doncs els Desbosc van recuperar-lo el 1532 i el van mantenir entre les seves propietats fins el 1671. Al segle següent, el XVIII, el castell va quedar abandonat.

Les noves construccions van deixar poc espai a la capella, que va quedar encaixada entre els nous edificis, tot i que la seva pervivència està contrastada fins el 1836, quan consta que s’hi va dir missa abans de que, anys després, s’enrunés, procés que probablement ja havia començat a afectar a la resta del castell. El segles XIX i XX van segellar l’estat ruïnós de Burriac.

🍁📚 Buenas tardes lectores 📚🍁 🍂 ¡Feliz lunes a todos! ¿Qué tal habeís pasado el fin de semana? ¿Habeís leído mucho? 🍂 Hoy tenía ganas de traeros la reseña de la que fue mi mejor lectura en el mes de octubre:  〰️ "Federico" de Ilu Ros. 〰️ 🔸️ Esta novela gráfica es un recorrido por la vida de Federico García Lorca. Desde su más tierna infancia, hasta su posterior fusilamiento durante la Guerra Civil Española.  🔸️ Lo más significativo de esta biografía ilustrada es, sin duda, la manera tan original que tiene Ilu Ros de mostrarnos la vida del poeta. Ya sea por boca de sus familiares, amigos y conocidos (a modo de entrevista en blanco y negro, dandole un toque más realista a la ilustración) o mediante textos, cartas y entrevistas, del propio Federico (al más puro estilo de la autora)  🔸️ Jugando en cada instante con la palabra y la imagen. Por lo que no se hace pesado ni dificil de seguir. Además de su dinamismo al contar anécdotas y acontecimientos inéditos, que nos ofrecen una cara totalmente nueva de la imagen más tradicional que tenemos de Federico como poeta y dramaturgo. 🔸️ En esta obra se puede ver al hombre tras su poesía. Un alma cándida y apasionada que vivió por y para el arte. Vemos la importancia que tuvo para él lo cotidiano, la tradición andaluza (que llevaba grabada en sus venas) pero sobre todo vemos la risa y las lágrimas del hombre tras la máscara de su obra. 🔸️ Una historia triste, entrañable y apasionada que no dejará indiferente a nadie que decida darle una oportunidad.
