Francois Truffaut, The director of “ 400 Blows,” believes the coming of age story is for everyone. He said, ”The coming-of-age film is timeless for a reason: It's the one experience directors can be assured every moviegoer has gone through” The director can be sure that to some extent, everyone has gone through these same emotions and feelings in his or her own life. Badgerherld.com said, when talking about the film “Boyhood”, “The genius of this movie isn’t a shocking plot twist or creative story, but the truly enigmatic portrayal of human life” This description is relatable to most of these coming of age stories, the plot might not be wild and crazy but the feelings and emotions portrayed are incredibly relatable and touching to us.

Coming of age movies aren't like any other movie genres out there. They have an element and feeling that you can’t get in any other genre. There is more to this genre than just a “teen movie”, a “teen movie” is a movie just about teenage angst. Hadley Freeman explains, “The coming-of-age is a more soulful phenomenon: yes, it looks at teen life, but something deeper about the human spirit is revealed, and just because it might happen on a prom dance floor doesn’t in any way diminish the epiphanic uplift. Put it this way: with a teen film what you remember is the funny teen stuff, with a coming-of-age film you remember the emotions.” This genera has more emotion than most movies and that is one of the reasons that they are so widely excepted.

Most great coming of age films are set in the past and the historical setting of theses films help the message within them be clear and concise, modernity could blunt the message of universality. In today's world everything is moving a billion miles per minute. With new technology coming out everyday, it’s hard to keep up with it let alone keep track of it all. Things like social media didn't come out until the later 2000s. Facebook started in 2004, Twitter in 2006 and instagram in 2010. You can't look anywhere without seeing an Iphone having someone take a selfie or even hearing the latest news about a Kardashian. Technology is something that has pushed its way into everyone's lives whether we like it or not. So then why are so many of these new coming of age films set in a time before all of these new technological advances came out, not after them?

Not everyone can relate to the new age of technology. Not everyone grew up with the latest Iphone, or three thousand plus followers on instagram. Not everyone was worried about their crush retweeting their tweet or adding them back on snapchat. Millennials can relate to this new technology because they were coming of age when it all started to become popular. Baby boomers and older however, cannot always relate to this new technology and the way it has changed how it feels to grow up. If these popular coming of age films that I mentioned before were set in the present, they would be totally different. For example, in “Lady Bird,” she lies about where she lives and because technology wasn't as big in 2002 she was able to keep this going for quite a long time. If that movie was set now, lying about where you lives becomes a lot harder when everyone can look you up on “find my friends” and clearly see she is in another house everyday. In the film “Call Me By Your Name,” once the summer is over Oliver leaves Elio’s house and their communication becomes quite slim. Around Christmas time Oliver calls the family to tell them he’s engaged to someone else. Elio is left shocked and heartbroken. If that was to happen now, Elio would be following Oliver on Instagram and he would see all the pics Oliver is posting with this other girl and he wouldn't be shocked or surprised at all when they get engaged. In “Moonlight,” when Kevin and Chiron see each other again for the first time in a very long time, they have to get completely caught back up on eachother lives. If that was to happen in present day, catching up wouldn't take so long because they have been following each other on Facebook this whole time. If these films were set in the present, imagine how different they would be, imagine how non-universal and imagine quite frankly how boring these films could potentially be. They need the more historical setting so that everyone can actually relate to them.

Having these films set in the past brings a nostalgic feeling we can all relate to. Webster's dictionary defines nostalgia as, “a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition”. This is the exact feelings these movies bring to people. In an article by Alan Siegel, he talks about the role of nostalgia in our everyday lives. Nostalgia has been shown to counteract loneliness, boredom and anxiety,” John Tierney of The New York Times wrote in a 2013 feature about the psychological study of the phenomenon. “It makes people more generous to strangers and more tolerant of outsiders. Couples feel closer and look happier when they’re sharing nostalgic memories. On cold days, or in cold rooms, people use nostalgia to literally feel warmer.” Nostalgia used to be considered a neurological disorder but now, in fact, it is looked upon as something that improves your mental health and even improves your daily mood. These films all have a special element of nostalgia in them. The movies with these past historical settings are doing this they bring us back to an older time that we can all relate to and by doing so they are improving our overall mental health.

Films set in these older time periods are set in times that all people know about. One does not have to have grown up in the 80s to know about the 80s. I grew up in the 2000s but I still know that if I start seeing leg warmers, mini skirt, parachute pants and some huge earrings that this movie is probably set in the 80s. Or if I start hearing only the songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Wonderwall” and “Nothing Compares 2 U” then this movie is probably in the 90’s. Even though I didn't grow up in those time periods, I know people who have. Whether it is a parent, a grandparent, a friend, or someone from a history book, when we know people in these certain time periods they become more personal to us. We can look at these films and see that these people that we know, who grew up in totally different times, still went through the same things during their coming of age moments, it really unifies us to the themes in these movies. These cross-generational themes prove that movies that are made today but are set in the past really showcase the feelings and emotions that go along with coming of age perfectly. These movies that have been produced in the last couple of years but are set in the earlier time truly show that these ideas can be relatable to all. It doesn’t matter when they were made or what setting they are in, they still can relate to those who are in the time period they were in, the time period they were placed in, and all between.

A problem that I have heard many people say about this genera in particular is that all these films are “white as hell” and that these films are only written about privileged white upper class citizens. While I do agree that these films could always have more diversity, one could argue that almost all genres could use more diversity. If the people saying that were basing all their opinions off of teen moves such as “Clueless” than yes you would be right in saying that film is based off of privileged upper class citizens. But we have to remember coming of age films and teen movies are not the same. If you look at any modern coming of age films your perspective would probably change. For example, the coming of age film “Moonlight,” is about the life of Chiron as he is growing up in Miami as a young, gay, African-American man. Or the film “Juno,” about a 16 year old girl who gets pregnant in highschool and her decision to not get an abortion and to put her baby up for adoption. The list of these movies goes on and on for their originality and the fact that they all have relatable themes no matter the individual circumstances they are all going through.

Another problem people have with these movies is they say they are all about sex and that sex is the only theme in them. In many of these films the characters either talk about or actually do have sex, but that is definitely not what this gerera is based on and there are certainly more themes and ideas to get out of these films than just that. Many people think these movies only focus on the “sexual awakening” part of coming of age but that simply isn't true. Coming of age means many different things for many different people and each of these films show that beautifully. Coming of age really is all about choices, the choice can basically be boiled down to this, do you want to live the life that society has made for you or do you want to live you own? These films all show this when the character chooses for themselves how they feel about gender, social classes, religion, many other issues including sex. These films are not based around sex although that may sometimes be how they are portrayed. In reality, they are based around growing up, choices and searching for one’s own identity.

The coming of age genre is very relatable. The themes and emotions in these films are something we can all personally relate to in each of our lives. We may not have had the exact same life as the person we are seeing on screen. We might not be the same skin color as the person on screen. We might not have the same sexual orientation or have the exact same problems. But we have all grown up, “Reliving your youth might seem possible for a while, while you watch a character go through the highs and lows of adolescence. And that may be reason enough to sit down and watch a good coming of age film that takes you on a stroll down Memory lane”.

Epochal Territories Shoot #6* - 30/12/2020

Colerne might be a quaint village in Wiltshire bordering on the outskirts of Bath, but at the epicentre of the village is what used to be RAF Colerne, but but known as Azimghur Barracks. Situated in North Colerne, there is a distinct difference between the elderly limestone cottages and the barrack-style housing estates for those stationed at the camp. The site was closed as an RAF base in 1976 and immediately was gained control by The Army, with only the RAF briefly coming back in 1993. Now the site is primarily used for military communications and home to the 21st Signal Regiment, which is the only regiment to support the RAF.

As is the norm now, I track my walks to keep a tab of my mileage and step count. This is so I know how much I have walked during the week, which includes walks and going out for runs. This particular walk was 5.3 miles around the airfield with the in-laws, which was a very interesting experience hearing a lot about the history of the camp. Despite the length, it was an enjoyable walk which I could have replicated again and again. I had ventured towards North Colerne a week before this, but I shot film that time and I wanted to replicate some of the images digitally. However this time, I went in another direction and gathered a few more images. The 5D was again around my neck with the Yongnuo 35mm F2, stopped down to F11 and the ISO set to 400. The shutter speed ranged from 1/40s to 1/250s depending on the light and shadows.

The water tower can be seen for miles and can be used as a navigational beacon when walking around the area. The first thing one notices is the very brutalist design, with harsh straight lines and a bare concrete steel reinforced structure. The tower acts as a brutalist monolith that sticks out above everything else, with a second similarly designed tower a number of miles away. The above picture shows some closer detail of the tower, situated at the Rugby Club, and below close to a set of allotments. I feel that the tower creates a stark contrast between the wintery trees, wonky sheds and shows how altered the landscape is, rather blatantly.

Moving further up the road, the aspects of the airfield become more visible. The control tower and warning sign tells one that this is a military site (sign transcript above). The 1989 Official Secrets Act is set in regard to espionage and spying, creating an offence to disclose any official information without lawful authority. More and more, the military aspects of the village become more clear, and the feeling of unease grows stronger. The airfield is visible from the road, and the poorly kept hedge which is extremely thin, and it is a barren flat land of unused airfield. At this time of year, there is very little to no activity on the camp and it almost looks as if it’s abandoned. The only thing one can hear is distant road noise and the wind blustering past you. I find it strange how RAF bases and military establishments seem to pop up in the middle of the country side, and just like a motorway they are completely anonymous in their location - they could be anywhere if you removed any link to it’s whereabouts.

Numerous crash gates litter the perimeter of the camp. Crash gates can be found at high security facilities such as army bases, airports and correctional facilities. In the event of an air crash, these gates are designed to be ran into by fire and rescue vehicles, with the hinges specifically made to break on impact. In 1973, a C-130 Hercules crashed during take-off due to an engine failure, killing all five crew members (on the other side of where these are, towards Lucknam Park). It is a chilling thing to know that a plane crashed in a certain location almost 50 years ago, with no remnants of it happening. My Mother in-law mentioned she remembered it happening whilst she was at school, notably the explosion and the fire. Below is a distribution substation, which distributes electricity to a certain area that needs power. This could power electric fences, camera systems and the aforementioned crash gates.

Walking further along, the camp becomes more and more visible, with hangars and entrances making their appearances. On the far left middle of the top photograph is a water tank my Father in-law made almost 30 years ago, taking three days work to put together. I found it interesting to see something that he had built, and stood the test of time. I find the aspect of the military base to be somewhat estranging, because of the military presence in the area making one feel to be uneased with the high barbed wire fences, armed guard situated in tiny boxes and satellite dishes communicating messages. Further down this road it becomes more of a wooded area along the outskirts of the airfield, which my Father in-law mentioned that when he was young, there used to be a pile of plane wreckage where they had scrapped aircraft including DC-10s and even a de Havilland Mosquito.

After a bloody great hill, we made our way towards Pinewood and North Colerne, where the vast majority of military personnel live who work at the camp, with a percentage of the houses being sold off for private use. Mostly terraced properties, they are surprisingly large houses which have the odd detached or semi-detached offering. Some of the architecture changes depending on the location, varying from brick and mortar to a cinderblock construction, with the latter being rather bleak due to their grey nature. The quietness is shattered by the noise of screaming children and distant chatter, but the wind still blows creating a still but anxious atmosphere. I felt odd walking around a military housing estate with a camera, and wanted to take a photo and move along as fast as possible.

I was drawn to these houses, because the flat land the airfield is placed upon almost seems unending, and the houses seem incredibly drab and bleak, which is extenuated by the pandemic. The houses on the top row take the drab and bleak prize, as they seem to barely get any sunlight due to the four small windows on the first floor. The image below made me metaphorically kick myself, because I wanted to explore North Colerne for Mileage May Vary, but ran out of time. And I wish I had, because sitting sadly was an Alfa Romeo 164, a particularly rare car in the U.K when it was new, and thanks to the ever unreliable nature of them they dwindled to a handful. I also feel that the Alfa adds to the stark mise en scène of the alienating military housing, as its depilated and grubby. My mother law mentioned that a lot of these houses are filled with damp and gave children numerous ailments due to the poor condition of the housing.

A coda. I found this to be on par in terms of alienating landscapes as Saltram House. This time, the quietness wasn’t disturbed by physical noise, but the background metaphorical underlying buzz of military presence, air crashes and poor housing filled with damp walls and ill children. There was a feeling of unease especially when in the housing area of the camp, with the barbed wire fences surrounding the eerily quite base which is usually a hive of activity. The history of the base is also fascinating to me, as I enjoy learning about the history of areas and have an active interest in aviation history. RAF Colerne/Azimghur Barrack is rich in history stemming from the Second World War to current day.

I am extremely happy with the images I have created, and I am thoroughly enjoying shooting digitally and monochromatically. I feel that I have perfected how I want my work to be aesthetically, in regards to the tonality of the photograph and composition. My only concern is the 5D’s age, and my attempts to find out the shutter count failed miserably, with my camera acting as a form of Schrodinger's Cat. Not knowing the shutter count on a 13 year old digital camera is unnerving, but I have every confidence that it is below Canon’s 100,000 actuation expectancy. Previously mentioned is that I had shot this location a week before, but with the Mamiya 7ii with in colour and B&W. These shall be developed at a later date and shall be uploaded here when they are developed. For now, I am happy to continue to shoot digitally and emulate the look and feel of HP5+, which to me preference is perfect for me, as it contains a good amount of shadow and highlight detail with turning into a horrid HDR mess which usually floods the front page of Flickr. The added noise of the 5D’s older sensor is also rather organic whilst shooting B&W, so I don’t mind the noise either. For once, I am happy to shoot digital over analogue.

Dashing through the Snow in a 603-HP Mercedes-AMG

Canada isn’t exactly a popular winter getaway spot for Americans, and Gimli, Manitoba, a small town situated about 60 miles north of Winnipeg, isn’t even a popular winter destination for Canadians. But we have a feeling that would all change if more people knew about the screaming good time they could have driving a 603-hp Mercedes-AMG E63 S on ice.

A 400-acre section of Lake Winnipeg, once it is well and truly frozen, serves as the North American home of Mercedes’ AMG Driving Academy’s Winter Sporting program, where a few thousand dollars can purchase two or three days of hooning around under the careful instruction of half a dozen seriously skilled drift instructors—perhaps the most fun that can be had at that latitude anywhere on Earth. You could travel farther for this experience, as we did three years ago—AMG also offers the program in Arjeplog, Sweden, another 16 degrees of latitude north and many, many more hours of air travel away. By comparison, Manitoba is in our back yard, and the savings on airfare and time wasted in airports could let you upgrade to the top three-day Pro program.

When we arrived in Gimli, the winter driving season was nearing its end and the cars in this year’s fleet of overpowered AMG machines—CLA45, C63 S, and E63 S, each fitted with a set of hand-studded Lappi snow tires—had already been through weeks of icy torment at the hands of Mercedes’ well-heeled clientele. The cars looked scarcely the worse for wear, although sturdy metal tow hooks were drilled into the bumpers in case one were to wind up wedged too far into a snowbank to allow a simple push to free it.

Before we were set loose on the ice, lead instructor Danny Kok held forth on the anatomy of a good drift in a brief classroom session. We were implored to use hand-over-hand steering rather than what Kok dubbed “the shuffle technique.” The classic advice of steering into a skid was dismissed as too easy to misinterpret; the idea was reframed as steering in the direction we want the car to go. Looking, too, in the direction of your intended travel (instead of in whichever direction the nose of the car happens to be pointed) was hailed as an important technique that will help drivers learn to intuitively control a slide.

Once on the ice, we were given ample time to experience the three assembled powertrains. Within a few hours, we moved on from careful experimentation and were working on refining our tricks. Every once in a while, between increasingly ambitious and well-executed drifts, an overly enthusiastic turn-in or a misjudged prod at the gas pedal caused the tires to peel loose of the ice beneath us as they lost traction, and the car began to spin. This all felt giddy and transgressive, and no one was quite ready to hand over the keys when our day was over.

How to Avoid Western Hunting Mistakes

When hunters fresh to the West go home empty-handed, it’s usually for one of two reasons. They can’t get to the game, or for those who can, they fail to get in position and make the shot before the opportunity walks away.

Nine years of professional guiding in Montana and Utah taught me that. And every guide I’ve discussed the matter with agrees.

While these issues are all-too-common, you don’t have to be that hunter who goes home with nothing but wistful tales of the one that got away. Here’s how to anticipate, prepare, and perform when the time comes.

Get in the Game

The physical aspect of hunting the West’s Rocky Mountains is vastly different from hunting, anywhere else in the Lower 48. Yawning canyons, knife-edged ridges, and windswept plains give up their shot opportunities reluctantly. You can expect to put in a considerable physical effort to find game and then more, usually in a race against time, to get within range.

Your level of physical fitness will determine where and how hard you can hunt. Be realistic, but be determined, too. Exercise frequently for several months before your hunt and emphasize building mental toughness. A no-quit attitude is more critical than even physical capability.

While working on physical fitness and mental fortitude, practice visualizing shot opportunities in rugged, dangerous, wild country far from any treestand, ground blind, or shooting bench. You may be exhausted from hours of hiking, but if you or your guide spots a big critter, you’ve got to switch on the reserve tank, put the motor in high gear, and get yourself close enough for a shot.

That may require running a mile down a ridgetop or climbing a half-mile straight up through a treacherous, loose-shale rockslide. You may have to cross through a cavernously deep canyon and climb out the other side.

Sometimes the effort for success is so shocking that hunters quit, often when just a little more lung-heaving, muscle-burning toil would have put them inside ethical range. Those folks never return to the West. Those that dig deep and get it done reap rewards that are deeply fulfilling, and they become addicted.

Just remember: If you aren’t willing to gut it out to get to a spot from which to shoot, you’ll never have even a chance at success. The West calls, challenges, tests, and rewards those that meet her halfway. Expect it. Relish it. Earn it.

Make the Kill

Once you’re within your ethical range and found a shot window, you must have the mental wherewithal and technical savvy to put together a stable position and send a bullet through the vitals of that big buck, bull, bear, or ram—usually with very limited time.

Here’s where most non-mountain hunters come apart at the seams. First, they can’t see the game. Then, they can’t get quickly into a steady position. Finally, they don’t know where to hold past 100 yards. The fact that many big western animals are shot at distances 300 yards or farther exacerbates the issue.

To prevent the first problem, practice looking. When your guide finds animals, ask him to point them out and take the time to study them, even if they’re females or small bucks. Learn how they move, learn their colors, and learn their shapes. Don’t fall into the habit of being a lazy client by letting the guide do all the glassing. Try to find animals before the guide. All this will help you key in on a shooter when it appears.

Next problem. Field positions are tricky for non-westerners. After all, who wants to lie prone among the chiggers back home and practice shooting? Or learn to dive into position like a baseball player going for home? Practice shooting paper plates offhand out to 60 yards or so. Past that distance, most hunters—no matter the running whitetail that they bumped off with a 200-yard snapshot back in high school—just can’t reliably make an offhand shot. Try for speed, with the caveat that you never fire unless you know the shot’s money. Don’t press the trigger on a high-risk shot; you’ll just spook the game out of the country. If you’re wobbling all over, get steady and then kill cleanly.

Learn to drop quickly into a sitting position, elbows planted firmly on knees, and smack that paper plate out to 200 yards. Sitting is the most stable, most useful position for fleeting shot opportunities inside that distance.

Perfect the art of going prone fast and squeezing a careful shot into that paper plate out to 300 yards—in less than seven seconds from a standing start. Then add a daypack or bipod and extend that distance to 400 yards.

Learn to glance around and use natural terrain features when setting up to take the shot. A big rock, log, or hummock can serve as an improvised benchrest and significantly improve your chances of making a perfect shot.

Once steady, take a deep breath or two, oxygenating muscles and sharpening vision. Lock the crosshairs in position and squeeze that trigger. Follow through as the rifle recoils. Then, while keeping the scope on the animal, work the bolt like there’s no tomorrow and get the reticle back on the vitals, ready to shoot again if necessary.

Simple & Savvy

When hunting rugged, high-elevation country, the old adage KISS (keep it simple, stupid) applies. You don’t need a daypack full of whiz-bang gadgets; you just need to be really good with your rifle. Know your precise point of impact to 400 yards. Use a clear scope that allows you to see your game in challenging low-light conditions. Use a premium bullet that will drive deep and kill effectively from any shot angle.

Finally, be aggressive. Unlike the whitetail woods, where a big buck is often better left unpursued and unspooked in hopes of getting a better opportunity another day, game in the West is unpredictable. Once that big trophy is found, give everything you’ve got to take it, because you’ll probably never see it again.
