it's always interesting* to me that there exist non-homogeneous people living their lives who share some vague commonalities of behavior, and other people who don't partake in the same reason-agnostic behaviors decide that this is a cohesive, organized group, and, furthermore that that group is a cult.

interesting*, the degree of othering that must go on to make that make sense. because when you other a "group" (and simultaneously dismiss that "group" as cultish, stupid, etc) it's so you don't have to understand the behaviors that you've decided bring them together, y'know? makes one wonder why.
