Always Led Back to You chapter 2, a John Doe/Seraphina from UnOrdinary fanfiction [FASTPASS SPOILERS for 212-214]

Seraphina quickly changed out of her uniform, a frown marring her features.

“Are you crazy, Seraphina? Why would you go meet this person? It all just sounds so shady.” Isen voiced, looking at her like she was out of her mind. Maybe she was, but Seraphina could no longer stand on the sidelines as John self-destructed and everyone would pay the price for it.

“I won’t be alone. You both could go with me.” Seraphina reasoned.

“But last time you met these people, Arlo was with you! I’m not as strong as him.” Isen argued.

“Isen is right, Seraphina! You’d just get hurt and we wouldn’t be able to protect you.” Elaine tried to reason with the magenta haired girl.

“We need to do this, Elaine. John’s going to destroy us all if we don’t do something.” Seraphina was losing her patience, tired of feeling useless in the wake of Ragnarok.

“We’ll find another way.” Isen placed his hand on her shoulder. Elaine nodded.

“Seraphina, please…” Elaine beseeched her.

Seraphina stared at them. She was silent. Isen and Elaine waited with baited breath.

“No.” Seraphina was firm, her eyes filled with determination. “I’m sorry, Isen… Elainie.” She then turned away from them, walking away. “If you won’t go with me, I’m on my own.”

“This is the only way. I have to do this.” Seraphina told herself, straightening out her jacket. She glanced at herself in the mirror, satisfied with her attire, and took a deep breath before exiting her bedroom.

“Seraphiina.” Arlo was there with Elaine, who looked absolutely panicked. Seraphina locked eyes with the former king.

‘Elaine must’ve gotten him to reason with me.’ Seraphina concluded.

“I’m not backing down from this Arlo. If you’ve come here to stop me, it’s useless. I refuse to watch everyone suffering anymore and me not being able to do anything about it.” Seraphina told him.

“I know.” Arlo replied, crossing his arms. “That’s why I’m coming with you.”

“W-What?!” Elaine looked like she was about to faint, not expecting this plot twist from her former king.

Seraphina and Arlo examined each other for a brief moment, neither speaking, before Seraphina smiled, patting the blonde’s shoulder.

“Well, whaddaya know? You came through after all, Arlo.” Seraphina teased. Arlo tensed and Seraphina couldn’t help but picture him as a bristling cat. As if Arlo could sense she was picturing him with cat ears and a tail, he frowned.

“If you weren’t a cripple, I’d teach you not to tease your king.” Arlo huffed.

“Ah, but as I recall, you are no longer a king, and I shall hopefully no longer be a cripple if my instincts are right.” Seraphina’s smirk was absolutely fox worthy.

“Tch. Let’s get this over with.” Arlo dismissed her statement.

“H-hold on here! You two can’t be serious!” Elaine fretted.

“Elaine, if we’re not back by curfew, tell the school.” Arlo commanded. Elaine could swear her soul was leaving her body from fear.

“Arlo! What do you mean if you’re not back?! Why are you two walking away from me?!” Elaine cried as Seraphina and Arlo hurriedly made their way out of the school.

They arrived at the café that was designated as the meeting spot for Seraphina. Grabbing a table, the two surveyed their surroundings.

“You see anything suspicious?” Arlo asked.

“Nothing really. Just people having fun.” Seraphina answered. Arlo sighed, leaning back into his chair, his arms crossed, finger tapping against his bicep. Seraphina watched him closely.

“You seem nervous.” Seraphina noted.

“Should I not be?” Arlo asked her, his eyes stern, reprimanding as if she was the cause of his worry. “We don’t know anything about these people, and we’re going in blind. How can you be so cool about it?”

“I guess remaining cool is all I have going for me right now.” Seraphina shrugged. “I’m a cripple now. I can’t do anything about what’s happening, but maybe if I remain level-headed, it can help soothe everyone around me in some way.”

Arlo studied her, not saying anything. Then, a waitress approached their table.

“Hi! Would you like to order anything?” the waitress was all smiles, especially at Arlo, who paid her no heed. If Seraphina was in a mischievous mood, she probably would’ve stirred some trouble to tease the blonde.

“I’ll have a mango boba.” Seraphina smiled. The waitress nodded and then focused on Arlo, blushing a bit.

“I’ll have a black coffee.” Arlo stated. “No cream. No sugar.” His commanding tone startled the waitress while Seraphina, who was used to her surly friend, hid a smile.

“O-oh! Okay! Coming right up!” with that, the waitress left, and Seraphina found her opportunity to pounce.

“You know, you’ll never get a date if you constantly scare people away, Mr. Serious.” Seraphina pointed out lightly. Arlo raised an eyebrow at her.

“How could I be thinking of dating at a time like this?” Arlo was flabbergasted, or at least as much as the serious blonde would show. “I have no use for dates.”

“And that’s why you’re gonna end up an old man who never married with Elaine banging her head against the wall because you’re so dense.” Seraphina quipped.

“Elaine? What does Elaine have to do with this?” Arlo asked. If Seraphina wasn’t so composed, she would’ve burst out laughing.

‘Poor Elaine…’ she thought. ‘She surely likes someone who’s denser than a boulder.’

“Nevermind. Maybe try smiling once in a while? With all your frowning you’re going to lose that handsome mug from wrinkles.” Seraphina dismissed his question. The image of a cat bristling came to her mind once more when she saw Arlo’s expression.

“Well, what about you, Seraphina? You haven’t been on a date either.” Arlo pointed out, and Seraphina raised an eyebrow, surprised he’s even entertaining this conversation more.

“In case you’ve forgotten, Arlo, I’m not exactly a prize.” Seraphina replied. “Being a cripple hasn’t really endeared me to anyone as you have noticed.” She gestured to herself.

“John didn’t seem to mind.” Arlo replied, not maliciously, just stating as if it was a fact.

“That John isn’t here anymore.” Seraphina responded. She blocked out that fight where John was completely shattered in her eyes. His voice still rang in her ears when she slept.

“Seraphina, if you think John was putting on an act for you, you’re denser than me.” Arlo told her sternly. “He may have lied to you about being a cripple, but John would’ve conquered the world if you asked. He would’ve done anything just to make sure you were happy and safe, and has done things to do so.”

“I didn’t need the world.” Seraphina griped back, bitterness taking over. “I just needed him to be there.”

“And he was.” Arlo countered back, not bothered by her tone. “Why do you think he became Joker?”

“To punish people.” Seraphina was quick to respond, knowing the answer.

“To punish people who were harming you.” Arlo also was quick to respond. “Personally, I think John should’ve just came clean to you and protected you himself instead of relying on masks or us to do so, and I hate the guy for all he’s doing, but I can’t in good conscience deny his motives anymore or else I’ll be a coward just like him.” Arlo explained.

“What… what do you mean?” Seraphina asked, almost afraid to hear more. Arlo sighed, the tapping of his finger against his bicep increasing in speed.

“John’s priority was and has always been you. Everything he did, he did because he thought it would keep you safe. Seraphina… he’s nearly killed someone just for threatening you while you were unconscious.” Arlo confessed. “Now, you can tell me that John is gone, but you can’t deny he was never there. Personally, I’m glad you kicked him to the curb because he’s become too unstable and nearly hurt you, but you can’t really go on believing you were never his entire world.”

“I wasn’t…” Seraphina tried to defend, the reality of Arlo’s confession washing down on her like a thunderous waterfall.

“You were. You may have thought you were just his best friend, but John, even if he never admitted it or realized it, saw you differently.” Arlo concluded with her, the tapping calming down, relieved he could finally say what he’s been keeping to himself since John threatened his silence. It was soothing to finally tell Seraphina what John didn’t want her to know, to finally be honest with a person he respected.

“Well…. That’s…. shocking to say the least.” Seraphina finally spoke. Arlo shrugged. “Is… what he became… is this all my fault?”

“No.” Arlo responded, not even needing to think about it. “All the fault is John’s. He should’ve just been honest with you in the first place.”

“But… if I had done things differently…” Seraphina was consumed by what ifs and should haves. What if she pushed harder? What if she let him know she was there? Would John be the way he is now if she had done things differently?

“No. Don’t think about those thoughts, Seraphina.” Arlo commanded. “It will do you no good. You cannot change the past. Now, we’re going to see if your hunch is right and you can change the future.”

“Arlo…” Seraphina paused. “Could I… is it possible you think I can save him? Even now, when he’s gone?”

Before Arlo could answer, the waitress brought them their drinks. Arlo paid the waitress no heed, watching Seraphina, his friend, struggling with her demons.

“Oh! By the way, there’s someone who has arrived for your table! I’ll be back with her order as well. Sorry about that.” The waitress announced, taking her leave. Arlo tensed, and quickly turned his head towards the door where the mysterious person they would meet was standing.

“It’s a woman.” Arlo whispered. Seraphina was roused from her inner turmoil, turning her head to look in the direction of the door as well.

Her heart stopped cold.

“Leilah...?”

So there you have it! I did add a lot more content than the original episode and changed the conversation a bit, but I hope you still enjoyed. I was going to have Arlo originally say it was his fault John went crazy, but then I realized that wouldn’t be in Arlo’s character to admit he fucked up.

Princess Wyvern [Dragon Age Fairy Tale AU]

Some time ago I came across this wonderful retelling of a Prince Lindworm but in a comic version with cute lesbian happy ending. One of the girls looked remarkably like @star--nymph‘s Eurydice, which made my brain have a lightbulb moment. Cue several days of desperately trying to get my muses to cooperate and here we are, a story that is a mish-mash between her Cullavellan and the fairy tale. Also, I am sorry this is a day late!!! Happy birthday, sweetness!!

Fairy Tale AU || 2510 words || Read on AO3

Once upon a time, in a land beyond the Waking Sea, there lived an elven king and queen named Lycus and Isen. They were a beautiful pair, blessed with good looks, good fortune, and respect of their people. And while their lives may have seemed perfect, they did lack one thing: a child. For countless years they tried and tried to conceive, but to no avail, and as the years passed, their despair only grew.

One day Queen Isen decided to take a long walk in the nearby woods, wishing to spend some time alone to ponder her childless existence. Lost in thought, she happened upon an old woman she did not recognize, all dressed in dark red cloth with hair white as snow.

“You look sad, my child,” said the woman. “What’s wrong?”

“There is no use telling you,” Isen replied. “There is nothing you can do to help me.”

“Try me,” the woman drawled.

The Queen understood in that moment that she was speaking with a witch, so she sagged against a tree and sighed in sadness.

“The short of it is, the King and I are childless. We have no heir to succeed us nor a child to warm our aging hearts. It’s hopeless.”

The old woman crossed her hands across her chest and smirked.

“No such thing, my child, if you do as follows” she said casually. “Return home and at sunset, take a chalice with two handles and place it in the northwest side of the garden, upside down. Then at dawn, lift the cup; you will find two roses there: a red one and a white one. If you wish to have a girl, eat the white rose, but if it’s a boy you desire, eat the red rose.”

And before Isen could thank the witch for the good news, the old woman lifted a finger to stop her.

“Beware of greed!” she announced in a booming voice. “For if you consume both roses, most horrendous thing will happen and you will forever be sorry.”

The Queen, ripe with joy and hope, thanked the witch for her blessing and rushed home to do as prescribed. She found a glorious silver chalice, placed it in the corner of the garden at sunset, and waited sleeplessly until sunrise. Once the first rays of light tickled the horizon, she ran outside and lifted the cup to find two beautiful roses underneath.

She thought long and hard on which of the roses she wanted to eat. If she had a boy, he would leave her sooner or later to become a hunter, a warrior, a man who would be strong but not there at all. Yet if she had a girl, she would grow into a princess that would want to get married and leave her as well. The choice was difficult, but Isen finally reached for the white rose and ate it. The petals were so silky and smooth, the flavor so divine, that the Queen momentarily forgot about the witch’s warning and ate the red rose as well.

And so came to pass that Queen Isen became pregnant and the kingdom was overjoyed. The royal pair looked forward to the birth of their child, but when the time came, the King got called away on an urgent matter of the state. The Queen gave birth not to one child, but two, and she cried out in horror when she saw an unnaturally pale skin of a wyvern come out first. When the second child came though, she breathed a sigh of relief, because it was a normal, beautiful baby girl.

“The King must never know!” she decreed and she ordered the wyvern child be tossed out the window.

Many years passed and the horror of that night faded from Isen’s memory. Her daughter Melia grew into a beautiful young woman who was the joy and pride of her parents. She was perfection in every way! And once the girl reached adulthood, the King and Queen decided it was time to start a search for a husband, to marry their precious daughter and help them rule their domain.

So the word was sent out and many princes from neighboring kingdoms came to look at the princess and vie for her hand. None of them ever got to the castle, because a great pale wyvern would stop any caravan and destroy it to pieces. As everybody ran for their lives, they could hear a rasping voice, calling out “A groom for me before a groom for her!”

Thus the greatest nightmare came to pass and the Queen tearfully admitted to the King what she had done. Appalled at first, he then tried sending multiple hunters to kill the wyvern; alas. it always came out victorious. Not willing to lose any more people to this monster, he finally agreed to find a husband for the wyvern.

A missive was sent out again, cleverly omitting which princess was to be married, and once more a multitude of replies came, offering their princes as grooms. When the first man arrived at the castle, he was not allowed to see his bride until the wedding, and the lo and behold, it was the wyvern. He tried to back out, but the King and Queen didn’t let him; they promised that if he managed to spend the night with the wyvern, he would be rewarded beyond compare. He agreed and married the wyvern.

In the morning, the King and Queen entered the chambers, only to see the wyvern alone, traces of blood everywhere that clearly indicated the prince had been eaten. Big purple eyes opened, gazed deeply into Lycus’ eyes, and a rasping voice announced “A groom for me before a groom for her.”

Two more times they sent for a prince and two more times the same thing happened: the wyvern would marry and eat the man, and in the morning demand that it be given another groom. The news of the monster finally got out of the castle and no more kingdoms were willing to send a prince to marry a wyvern. King Lycus used all of his influence and all of his carefully crafted diplomatic agreements, but nobody wanted to send their child to a certain doom. Soon all of their allies retreated and the kingdom fell on hard times. And still, the wyvern would not be appeased, demanding a groom before Princess Melia could marry.

The tales of their misfortune traveled far and wide, so it did not surprise them that one day a man, a human, showed up on their doorstep, demanding an audience with the King. Resigned to their fate, they granted his request and let him inside. Their guest was different from what they were used to, tall and broad and golden everywhere. His armor was gilded with symbols unknown in their culture and shone in sunlight like a beacon.

“I will marry your wyvern princess,” he announced in his deeply Fereldan accent.

Even at the edge of despair, King Lycus cared greatly for the reputation of his family.

“You are a human,” he stated. “Why should I let you marry someone of noble Dalish blood?”

Amber eyes sharpened into a steely glint and the warrior narrowed his eyes.

“I am not unknown in my lands, King Lycus, for I am General Cullen Rutherford” he announced. “And I know for a fact that you will let me marry your wyvern daughter, because no other man has been willing thus far.”

Faced so rudely with cold, hard facts, the King and the Queen had no other choice but to allow this human to marry the wyvern princess. The ceremony was small, barely anybody showed up to witness it, and many lamented the imminent loss of such a handsome man. For his part, Cullen didn’t flinch when the wyvern came to stand beside him and he didn’t shy away when his newlywed chambers where shown to him.

For he had a plan for how he would deal with the wyvern. Back home, he had come across a witch named Morrigan, who explained to him how to tame the wyvern and defeat the curse on the elven kingdom. As per her advice, he had requested a barrel of lye, a tub of milk, and a variety of whips be put in the bedroom, then he dressed in ten white shirts before putting on his groom garb.

Once alone with the wyvern, it raised onto its dreadful claws and spoke in a terrible hiss.

“Handsome lad, shed your shirt.”

Cullen was terrified down to his bones, but did not let fear show on his face. He stared the wyvern in its purple eyes and demanded, “Princess Wyvern, slough a skin!”

Whatever the monster had expected, it clearly wasn’t that. It paused in its idle movement, weighing his words.

“No one has ever dared to demand that before.”

“But I demand it now,” replied Cullen.

After a brief pause, he watched as the wyvern twisted and coiled and shifted, and the skin came off in a ghastly display that made his stomach churn. In turn, while the wyvern stared at him with inscrutable eyes, he took off one of his shirts and tossed it on top of the discarded pale scales.

“Handsome lad, shed your shirt!” it demanded again, clearly impatient.

“Princess Wyvern, slough your skin!” he replied with equal force.

And the process repeated over and over again, until Cullen was down to his last shirt. At this point, the wyvern no longer looked like a wyvern; instead, it was a mass of muscles and veins and blood, and it breathed heavily in deep, rattling huffs. Satisfied that he’d done the first part right, Cullen grabbed the various whips, dipped them in lye, and proceeded to whip the wyvern as hard as he could. The sounds of pain and agony that came from its mouth tore at his heart and made him want to stop, but he didn’t. He continued until there was nothing more than a bloody mess on the stony floor.

Carefully, and with great gentleness, he heaved the creature into his arms and brought it over to the tub of milk. He bathed it then, making sure that every bit of blood and grime washed off completely. Done with the chore, he lifted the battered wyvern out of the tub and placed it in the big, feathery bed. And just like the witch had told him, Cullen climbed in as well, placed his arms around the bruised flesh and started singing.

Now, he didn’t really prepare just what he was going to sing - he could barely believe that he had survived this long - so he started at the beginning of the Chant of Light and carried on until his voice went hoarse and quiet, and he couldn’t anymore. Thankfully, the wyvern had fallen asleep and while it scared him to do so, Cullen settled himself more comfortably and followed suit.

The morning came quietly. The King and the Queen opened the door to the bedchambers, fully expecting the man to had died, and gasped at what they saw: a room full of discarded scales mingled with white shirts, generous smears of blood ran everywhere, whips still dripped with lye, and a tub of milk stood in the corner, the liquid murky and vaguely pink. At the center of it all sat the grand bed and in it lay the golden man with a beautiful, frail-looking woman in his arms.

Shocked gasps and shouts of alarms woke up Cullen to the fact that he no longer held a wyvern, but a woman of considerable beauty. She was small and fragile, much more than other elven women he’d known, but it did not bother him. As she stirred to wakefulness, he watched as pale eyelids cracked open and the most beautiful amethyst eyes stared back at him, inquisitive and measuring.

“You’ve lifted my curse,” she said and slid her gaze away.

“Yes, I have,” he replied, his voice still gruff from the night before.

She tried to shift away from him. “You are now stuck with me.”

“Not the worst fate I could think of,” he pointed out. He pulled her closer into his arms and she let him. “After all, I married a princess who turned out to be the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

A small smile bloomed on her face, even while she still wouldn’t meet his eyes.

“You haven’t seen many women, then.”

His eyes softened as he gazed at her pale face, taking it all in. He gently cupped her face and lifted it up, to meet his eyes.

“I have seen enough and I have no need for more.”

They kissed then, sweet and tender and fond, and while they didn’t love each other yet, they knew they would grow into it.

This is the point where a fairy tale would end with ‘and they lived happily ever after’, but this is not such a story.

While the King and the Queen were grateful to Cullen for lifting the curse on their older daughter, they did not grow fonder of him. They kept trying to get him to leave, return to his own lands, while they locked away their not-wyvern daughter. For she was not what they had expected, having spent all of her life locked in a body of a vicious monster. She hated being touched by random strangers, she wouldn’t look people in the eye, and she would bluntly tell others what was on her mind. And while she was still beautiful, King Lycus preferred to keep her away from the public eyes.

In the end, it was the brave general who once more came to her rescue and helped her run away from her cruel father. They traveled far, far away, until they were certain nobody could find them, and settled in a small hut by the forest, cultivating plants and raising stock until a very old age.

The End

Cullen closed the book and looked up at the faces of his enraptured children.

“Alright rugrats, sleep time,” he announced and moved to get up from his chair.

“Daddy, daddy! Was that story true? Was mamae really a wyvern?” asked one of them.

Cullen paused. The fairy tale was a gift from Varric one of the previous years, a silly collection of stories that featured Cullen and Eurydice in a variety of fairy tales that their children loved listening to at bedtime. While most of it was pure fiction, elements of them still rang true and hurt to think about.

Like Lycus’ treatment of Eurydice, to begin with.

“Of course not,” he said quietly. “This is just a story written by Uncle Varric, you know this, Psyche.”

The girl looked disappointed, but no less thrilled to fantasize about it further once he had gone. As Cullen got up and turned to leave, he once again vowed to love all of his children to the fullest capacity of his heart.

Ask Jane’s Creator (Part XII)

What are those codes that Jane and Dragon are trying to solve?

The codes are dragon runes, or dragon language. Dragon has been collecting anything with runes on it in the hope that it will help him unlock the truth about dragons. He wants to know the full truth, not the stories he hears from shortlives. Most of all he wants to know what happened to dragons and he hopes the runes will help to reveal the past and solve all those mysteries.

Do Pepper, Rake, Smithy, and Jester have family members that work at the castle?

There is now a lot of new information about the characters on the Meet the Cast page! It will tell you all about their families and where they live. For instance, Smithy is the son of a local pig farmer, and his family still live on a small pig farm not far from the castle.

Why does dragon talk to Jane so much?

For three hundred years, Dragon kept himself a secret from the world. He's spied on shortlives, learnt their languages, and tried to understand them. But the few times that he revealed himself he always got into trouble and was attacked...Then he met Jane! At last he found someone who wasn't scared of him and didn't want to kill him. Someone he could talk to. And he has three hundred years of talking to get out of his system!

Who is Jane's father? Will you ever show him on any of the episodes?

Jane's father is the King's Chamberlain. He runs the castle staff and tries to keep the King's treasury from running out of money. He appears in several episodes, and one in particular where he gets so worried by something that happens to Jane that he gets right into the action himself.

Why is Jane's hair so fluffy?

It's just the way it grows! Her mother, The Lady-In-Waiting, wants Jane to use bows and clips to control it like a proper young lady of the Court. You can imagine what Jane thinks of that idea! So Jane likes it just the way it is, especially because it looks rather like a ball of dragon fire.

Is dragon able to perform magic? I know that some dragons who are older and wiser have that ability, but I do not know whether Dragon qualifies.

No, Dragon can't perform magic. His flying and fire-breathing seem like magic, but they are all due to the methane gas he builds up in his body from eating lots of vegetation. His scales and skin seem like magic because they are too strong for most weapons, but they are just very tough like slivers of bone. Unfortunately, a lot of shortlives in Jane's world used to believe that parts of a Dragon had special magical powers, so they would hunt Dragons for their teeth, claws, and scales.

I study dragons all the time and know dragon scales are hard to get. But why does Jane wear them on her skirt? You have to kill dragons to get their scales, right?

Well spotted, Tuano! The links on Jane's skirt of armor do look like dragon scales. But they are actually made of metal. They are part of a suit of special armor that was found in Dragon's cave. It's covered in dragon runes and dragon symbols, including the metal scales of the skirt.

Will Jane ever be in a combat?

What inspired you to create the show the way you did?

We wanted Jane to be a cartoon that wasn't like other cartoons. We have tried to create a world where the characters behave like real people in a real world but who look like drawings from a book. The hope was that we could make a world that looked like it had stepped right out of the pages of a children's book, rather than a normal TV cartoon. I like to think we succeeded...don't you?

Just where do Rake's affections lie? And why?

Rake doesn't have a harsh word for anyone. He sees the best in people and has a great deal of affection for Jane and all their friends. But there is one special person who can bring a bit of color into his cheeks, and she does it without rubbing beetroot on his face...though Rake has done that himself once, to please Princess Lavinia!

Do Pepper, Smithy, and Rake play games together?

Yes, they do...they play Bandyball! It was a very popular sport throughout England in Jane's time. It was a team game and could be played with as few as two people on each side or with hundreds. Sometimes entire villages would play against each other! The game involved hitting a ball (made from a pig's bladder that was filled with dried seeds) towards the other team's goal, which could be a post, a wall or a building. It was played with curved sticks and was a bit like modern hockey, except players could kick, throw, and hit the ball.

Did you watch or read any other books to give you an inspiration for these characters?

My inspiration comes from real people. The characters in Jane's world are based on friends I had when I was young, on my children and friends of my children. It's the same for the adult characters. For instance, the King is very much like a teacher I had when I was at school. He was always trying to please everyone and he wasn't as smart as the children he was trying to teach. But he was a kind man and so we were always polite to him even though he was a bit silly and boring.

Do you know a dragon, and are you real?

Yes, I do know Jane's Dragon! He's lived in my head for over twenty years and is always telling me about his adventures from the years before he met Jane. He has now asked me to ask Jane if she would write them down for him. I've promised to pass on the message!

Who does the voices of Jane and Dragon?

Jane is voiced by a very talented 13-year-old Canadian actress named Tajja Isen. You might recognize her voice on TV as that of Betty from "Atomic Betty" and Jodie from "Time Warp Trio." She's also an accomplished singer -- she portrayed Young Nala in the Toronto production of "The Lion King" for nearly a year -- as well as a pianist and songwriter. I think Tajja has a bright future ahead of her...just like Jane!

The voice behind Dragon belongs to Adrian Truss, one of Canada's leading comedians. He has performed with the Second City comedy on stage and television, as well as with the improv troupe he co-founded, Illustrated Men. You can hear Adrian's voice in other animated series such as "Atomic Betty" and "Rolie Polie Olie." Adrian has also written and directed several plays for the stage. He's a truly multi-talented fellow and we're thrilled that he's helping us bring Dragon to life.

Where is Gunther's mother? Why is there no one to stand up for him against his father?

Gunther doesn't know where his mother is. His father refuses to talk about her and gets very angry if Gunther asks about her. He has a few memories of her and has collected bits of gossip here and there. One tale is that she was the daughter of a rich trader and that the Merchant only married her to get her father's business.

        Contracts and Demands Part 5

         I woke up to my alarm clock as usual, and groaned feeling my face I was dead tired, and I had only slept for three hours. Thankfully I didn’t have to go into work today so I was able to relax in bed, and I quickly and happily curled up in my pillow knowing I didn’t have to move from my spot. I was just about to drift off again when the bell to my room jingled and I looked up to see Raven looking down at me, he looked perfectly fine, and very naked, he walked towards me, with his arms crossed.          “Raven please go away, not right now.” I protested weakly because I didn’t have the energy to deal with him right now.           “Master Dale we need to talk about the ball, how did it go?” He asked picking me up out of bed by the back of my vest, and sitting me upright. “Raven… Seriously?”           “This is the first time I haven’t attend the ball, I want to know how it went. You have to tell me everything.”           “If I cook dinner will you leave me alone?” I asked groaning, rubbing my eyes to remove their dreariness.           “No sir.” I looked up at him and fell back into bed.           “Fine.” I protested pulling the blade from my hip and leaning it up against the side table. With a deep breath laying on the pillow I started to tell Raven everything that had happed. Though by the time I stopped talking, Ria stumbled half-dressed and smelling of sex. “Woah, those slaves know how to party. Gods I can’t believe I never tried it before.” She groaned leaning on the wall looking at me. I sighed and snapped my fingers and my desk chair came towards her and she sat down, with my magic I simply pulled her near. At this point I was awake enough to sit up, and crossed my legs on the bed as I restarted the story so she could listen to me. Healing her hangover as I talked and some of the sexual injuries she had gained from the night before.          By the time I finally ended the story they both looked at me rather unhappily. “You should have kept that female by your side.” Raven simply stated looking down scolding me partially.           “And you should have wandered around the ball room and got yourself acquainted with many other nobles. You need to spread out, if you don’t earn the respect of other nobles you won’t hold your position in the court for very long.” Ria added and Raven nodded in agreement.           “I hate these kind of things, there annoying and just full of manipulation, and lies. That female was just wanting to be around me because she wanted to marry into my name.” I countered stiffly and Raven groaned and pushed back his ears.           “It doesn’t matter what you think of what she was trying to do you, you should have stayed with her, and she may have introduced you to others. You are a stranger very few know anything about they’re going to weary of someone that has no history. You have to show them your better side and allow the nobles to get comfortable around you, or else no one will do business with you. Think about it as trying to get a loan from a bank, you make many small loans you pay back promptly allowing the bank to get comfortable with you, and then you can start taking large loans. Think of every small loan as an interaction, when you pay it back promptly, think of that as a good interaction, that earns you respect with the nobles as a whole. It doesn’t matter if you fail every now and then as long as you are seen as a good and fair noble among the others. When you get in there good graces that is when you can start asking things from them, and they’ll agree to do things for you, because they know your word is fair and they trust you. It’s not about whether you like that noble or not, it’s about if you are able to interact with the properly. Right now to the nobles you are a mystery they aren’t sure to trust or despise you, you are a wild card, that could ruin them or make things better for them, so nobles are going to test you now.”           “That means?” I asked understanding the bank styled explanation, rather surprised by Raven’s input because I didn’t take him to be a political figure, he seemed more like a back ground figure.           “Good and Bad things, rumors, shunning, tasks and forced interactions. How you handle each one will determine if the nobles will respect you enough to trust you, or leave you by the wayside. You need their support so right now, this is the true political game. You can’t trust anyone, anyone could be working with a noble to collect information on you. So be careful what you say and how you interact with those around you. You need to keep your secrets tucked close to your chest, and a dagger tucked in your belt.” Raven explained with a very ominous tone that forced me to pay close attention to his words.           “Then what should I do?”           “Live your life as you normally would, but play things a bit close to the vest, but try not to be too secretive, you want to keep their eyes on you.” Ria explained and I raised my eyebrow looking at her.           “And how would you know anything about this?”           “I’m Night Watch, political games are what we have to deal with for a living, even in the military. But I think you should try and participate in the Arena?”           “Why would I do that?”           “Mincridarins are always looking for strong mates, even friends, if you can prove yourself to be strong and powerful. The nobles will want to interact with you, because with power comes respect.”           “You know I was half expecting you to say reasonability.” I added and Ria looked at me confused but before she could say anything else I shifted the answer. “But I’ve heard you kill in the Arena?”           “Depends on the tournament, if it’s a city wide competition, killing is forbidden, you can maim but if you severely wound, or kill, you are punished by the full extent of the law.” Ria explained firmly before sitting back in her chair.           “But why do I want political power? I just came here to live and make a life for myself, not become a part of some kind of political agenda.”           “Sure, but think about it like this, imagine being denied everywhere for no apparent reason, and just ignored every single day of your life until you die?” Raven simply explained and his words were so simple and intense I quickly understood the need, and just groaned falling back on the bed.           “Fine, I’ll do my best to play the game.”           “Good now first things first is you need to push the boundaries a little, impose a hold on someone else’s territory, just a small portion, just enough to get their attention. We Ravens have always dominated the slave Market so something else would be best for you, in order for you to stick out and show a change in leadership.”           “How about residential building, you’d be surprised how many properties we have around the city. I have recorded lists of properties that the Raven family still owns even after hundreds of years, and pictures of maps of the city and where Raven properties are.” I explained and Raven smiled.           “That’d be perfect, no one likes being kicked out of their house. But if you can prove ownership even after so long you can pull the rug out from under their paws, and that will ruffle some noble’s feathers.”           “I’m thinking renovation, most of the properties are in trees that are referred to as the back woods, I’m guessing there are plenty problems in that area so if we improve the land value of some of the houses, that’ll catch some people’s eyes… For my books I’ve always had to come up with floor plans for houses and I have a program on my computer that can help me create designs and layouts. It just getting the permits to allow such renovations.” I explained looking at Raven since he seemed to understand what to do and play the political game.           “Permits?” Raven simply asked looking down at me.           “You know things that say you can build something because it goes against regulation?”           “Isen if you own a property you only need it to be within those simple regulations, what you do with the property beyond that is up to you.” Raven explained and that left me kind of surprised, but I didn’t debate it much, because the lack of oversight would make these things quick and easy.           “Ok but I need to sleep, I’m not going to able to function like this, when I go to the Archives I’ll choose some locations from the Maps that’ll go way back, back enough to piss people off, that way they’ll talk about it, but when they see what I’ve done they’ll be surprised about it, and talk about what I’ve done. But I need a lawyer to make sure the properties I look are still legitimate, two I need see the regulations required to build, three I’ll need time to come with plans because I’m probably going to be the one building the houses with magic. Thank the gods Lynn trained me so rigorously in manipulation, I just hope I still got that touch, it’s been ages since I’ve last done anything with wood. I’ll also need some protection in case things go sideways, so some proper guards would do nicely. Ria can you do that?”  I explained giving out my orders.           “That’ll be easy. I know a few guards that wouldn’t mind a few more leafs in their pockets. You’ll just have to pay them up front first.”           “Fine, just have Raven pull the money out for you. Now can you two both let me sleep?” I asked and they both looked at me and simply nodded, and left the room. Ria closed the door as she left the room.          I woke up hours later and took a bath and got dressed in fine red vest and black pants. I pulled the laptop bag over my shoulder and left for the Archives alone. The two slaves I would have taken were passed out on the floor one on top of the other. Cock still inside the other’s ass. It was an amusing enough sight that I had to take a pictures, to embarrass them later.          I worked on the ledger but most of my work was dedicated on the previous land holdings marked down in the ledgers, contracts which I pulled from thick leather bound binders, and reviewing the maps of the city. I asked the Grand Archivist if I could see an up to date map of the city, he agreed understanding the need. Based upon the ancient maps I had of the city, The Capital City Tarva had grown nearly twice as big, but that didn’t mean the property I still owned wasn’t gone. Just for my personal record I took a picture of the maps, before I returned the city map to the Grand Archivist, yelling my thanks because anything else he couldn’t hear.          Sometimes I had yelled so much at him that my throat had gotten sore, though when I couldn’t stand the ledgers anymore, I cleaned up the table and packed up everything I needed, and left the Archives. When I got back to the brothel I had noticed some pretty pathetic tailers following behind me. They were terrible as suppressing their presence and blending in, they were painfully obvious it was like a scene in an action comedy. I took pity on them and just did nothing, because they were trying really hard, and I could tell, but they just gave everything away. They looked away when I looked at them, they hide behind people and things, and at points they were just talking to each other in order to blend in.          I eventually made my way upstairs of the brothel, the two large guards standing out front greeting me as I passed by them. Dropped my things and sighed starting to unpack, but I stopped when Raven came and collected me, he had already found a lawyer; so he lead me the Lawyer who was enjoying some drinks and sitting downstairs in the brothel. I gathered everything I had and brought it down. The lawyer reviewed the land holdings, and contracts. Out of the twelve I had brought him only one was seen as invalid, because of the fact that the contract was far too old to review properly, and because of a discrepancy in the contract that released the property back to the slave’s family if the slave had died in training, which in the contract was plainly stated.          Also one thing to note was that I should be getting paid some minor tax by the families that still owned the homes for the simple fact that I owned their home. He also explained I could regulate who lived in my homes, and shift the tax on the house as much as I liked within the regulated standards. But if I wanted to shift the tax around I would have to fill out the paper work. Which the lawyer stated I should do regardless because I was getting no returns on the properties as of right now, because of the fact that some properties were so old, the contract and who actually owned the property was forgotten, so the paperwork would merely reawaken the tax and put it back into play.          The lawyer finished by explaining that the regulations and building codes that I needed to follow, and provided a list of requirements that I had to obey or I could be penalized. The requirements were vague and utterly simple, locks on doors, windows, sleeping space, and kitchen of some kind, owning a bathroom wasn’t even mentioned. That personally made me feel sick, and I was going to make sure that these houses had a proper bathroom. So when the Lawyer left after being paid for his service I told Raven to find me a builder, I’d need an assistant who knew what he was doing if I wanted to create some of the things I had in mind. Raven nodded and left leaving me alone with my computer where I was already starting to come up with ideas for the buildings.          Ria returned with three guards from the Barracks that were available for the next few days, they were paid fifty brass leaves up front, each of the three would get a single copper leaf once done, on agreement. We set up a time in the morning to meet in front of brothel and they left to go on their way.          Raven returned with a single meek looking rat, an earth mage who specialized in building. He sat down and was brought a drink and we talked about how to manipulate the wood and how to build with it and how to build a bathroom most of all. When I showed him what I planned to do he spat up his drink in surprise, and looked at me in utter confusion wondering if I mentally stable, asking why I would do so much for those lowlife’s. I would have knocked the rat on his ass, but I held back. I hated his words just because they were so degrading to other citizens. I was a mage capable of making a home for nearly no cost out of pocket, making a families life better, and just trying to be charitable made me insane, that very concept was infuriating.          Raven was perceived my anger and he had the rat escorted out by two slaves, though with how to build things out of the way I closed my laptop, everything was in place. We merely just needed to act. And after a good night’s rest act we did, I woke up just before the leaves started shifting from green to the summer sun yellow.          The first thing I took note of was the smell when we neared the Back Woods, it was revolting and rank, I was sure I would lose my sense of my smell if I stuck around too long. The citizens in the Back Woods you could tell were leaf-less or nearly had nothing to their name. Their bodies were clean but their closes were old and torn.          When we came to the house I thought might make the most impact. I knocked on the door, until I got an angered response from a male. When the door was unlocked and got jammed on the floor, the male slammed open. I looked up into the face of an angered and tired reptile, his slit eyes glared down at me and his large body was naked. “What in the gods names do you want?!”           “I’ve come to tell you I own your house?” The anger in his eyes only grew more intense and he crossed his arms in front me and looked down at me. “I own this house, it took me years to buy it from the damn city.”           “Actually sir, it was never owned by the city.” I said and he looked at me confused but still very much angry and soon enough a tall slender female came into view and looked at me and then the guards.           “What’s going on?” She asked worry only in her voice and her mate turned to her and quickly took hold of her shoulder. “It’s nothing, don’t worry scales over these idiots. They were just leaving.”           “I’m sorry but your still seem a little confused I said I own your house, it was never owned by the city. It was given up when a Male going by the name Sithen, when couldn’t pay his debts. The house belongs to the Raven family.”           “My Grand Father, but he died years ago?” The female quickly protested, and soon enough a few small hatchlings called out from the back of the room.           “Your Grandfather Miss, never was married when he became a slave, so when he signed the contract giving up all he owned to the Raven family, this home wasn’t co owned by any other person or mate. So this house, he owned all by himself, so when he signed the contract he lost this house as well. Even if your grandfather died the property never went back to the city, and he couldn’t give it to anyone. The Ravens own your home I can show you all the paper work if you want.” I explained and the females and males face looked down at me with a mix of depressed emotions, but the male tensed up and confronted me grabbing my vest and pulling me closer, but a blade soon came to his throat, and he let me go.           “We aren’t leaving?” The protested angrily still very much standing his ground.           “Sir you misunderstand I never said you had to leave, I’m just merely stating I own your home, and as such I can do with the property as I want. I’m not here to drag you out, I’m here to improve your home free of charge.” The look on their faces were of sheer shock and the made seemed unsure of how to respond.           “What’s the catch?” He asked glaring down at me after a moment regaining his own composure.           “The Raven name is under new ownership. I personally own the Raven name. Pleased to meet you my name is Isen dale the owner of the Raven name.” I simply stated with a simple bow, greeting the male. “My actions are simply to be charitable, and improve the tarnished Raven name. But if you don’t want me to be here I can walk away. I have many other homes I have to get too.” I explained simply starting to shift away, but this comment caught the male off guard, but he settled down soon enough.             “Wait sir. I’m sorry for lashing out at you, I’ve spent years trying to earn the leafs required to pay for this home, what would happen after your done? I won’t turn down your charity but I don’t want to let a demon walk through the door.” The Phrase was strange but the simple explanation was that he didn’t want to be scammed; smart guy.           “I can give you two options sir, I’m willing to sign over the ownership of this home directly to you free of charge, no strings attached, or you can pay me a small tax, and allow me to remain the owner. If you do that though, if anything breaks or gets damaged, it’s my reasonability as the landlord to make sure it’s repaired or taken care of properly. In short you’ll be paying me rent.” The reptile felt his neck and looked at his mate, who was keeping her hatchlings close by her side.           “Can we wait to see what you do with our home before we agree to anything else?”           “Of course sir.” I simply agreed and the reptile nodded. “What do we need to do?”           “Merely clean your home, and bring anything that isn’t part of the tree out, my guards will make sure your belongings remain safe, so if you need to go to work, or anything you may go and do that.” I explained and he looked at me curiously and then at the guards.           “How can I trust you with my things?”           “Sir, I’m trying to improve the Raven name, I don’t want to make things worse for the Raven name. If I say we’ll protect your things, we’ll protect your things. If we are incapable of doing that I will be sure you are repaid properly.” I explained and he nodded and looked at his mate.           “Just stay with the hatchlings today, and watching our things.” The male explained and the female nodded and the male sighed. “Alright do what you want sir, I have to go to work I’ll be back before the leaves turn green.”           “I hope you have a good day at work, but sir shouldn’t you put on clothes?” I asked and the reptile looked down at me and sighed.           “It doesn’t matter where I work, just try not to break anything.” He finished softly before going to his mate and kissing her lightly, kissing the hatchlings and left saying goodbye, walking the streets with nothing on, not even underwear.           “I’ll get the house cleaned sir, it’ll be a bit.” I nodded and the female closed the door and walked away, I looked at my guards who were quiet and started a basic conversation with them, while trying not to breathe too deeply.  Eventually late in the morning the things were brought out in small crates and chests, the mother sat with her Hatchlings on her lap sitting on the largest chest watching me closely. The guards stood nearby the female because some Mincridarins were growing curious for than one reason.          I stepped inside the home and was quickly noticed the smell, it was apparent the place needed a proper cleaning, the wood was deeply worn down. The stairs creaked when I upstairs to view the beds. The wood was splintery and I had to pull a small splinter from my hand when the splinter lodged it’s self in place, as I was walking up the stairs tracing my hand over the railing. Eventually the ideas started to flow and I had a plan of what things would look like. So I went to the front door and closed it, jamming it closed before stretching out my body.          I pulled out my wand from the holster under my pant leg, and took a deep breath. “Hatchlings have you ever seen a master mage before?” They shook their head and I smiled. “Well I’m not one but I’ll be sure to make your home very pretty.” I simply stated and they gave a small laugh, and when their laugh stopped I grew tense and slowed my breath, I visualized the end product in my head, the details of everything I wanted done, just as Lynn had trained me to do.          “Don.” I said deeply as I expressed my magic, my body shooting out a powerful gray aura that I quickly focused into the tip of the wand, which I lightly placed on the door. From the tip of the wand, waves of gray light rippled across the trunk of the tree until it struck predetermined edges. I closed my eyes and as magic took shape I perceived I was inside the home building, it as if I was building it in a computer program, shifting around shapes manipulating the wood and bending it to my will. Step by step, room by room I moved through the home remodeling everything.          I don’t know how long I had been standing there in front of the door way, it was almost like a trance, but when I was truly done I tapped the door and sighed, magical exhaustion hitting me like a brick, it was bearable though, and I shifted inside the door and closed it. I finished with some simple finale touches, I warded the doors and windows, not like my room but with basic protection runes and charms to keep evil spirits at bay. I shifted outside when I finished the last window and settled down on a crate nearby. “Probably won’t recognize your home.” I joked looking at the female, and simply gestured for her to go inside with my wand as I regained myself. I may have expressed too much magic, but that was something to remember next time. The female looked at me unsure, but when I gesture for her to go again she didn’t resist and she stood up and went to the doors. She merely pushed open the door and I think her mind did a full restart, because she just stood there utterly shocked the hatchlings getting excited and running about.           “BY the Gods…. What have you done to our house?” She asked looking back at me, tears coming to her eyes as she wiping her scales clean. I smiled and at this point waved my wand at the containers they brought outside.           “Step aside hatchlings I don’t want you to get hurt.” I simply stated and I shifted the containers inside placing them were the female mother asked me too, but when I was done the hatchlings had finished their tour of the whole house.          When I finished placing the largest trunk I felt the female wrap her arms around me, she hugged me tightly. “Thank you, this is beautiful. I never thought I would ever live in a home so nice.”           “Miss let me show you some of the special things I’ve done.” I explained taking the female back downstairs the cubs hugging me happily as well, just asking me questions and being playful, the mother hushed them and she looked at me. I shut the front door and. “Every single door and window on your home is warded with spells that will keep pesky spirits out of your home, I’m sure if that is a problem but it’s just for a simple little addition, but the most important thing is this sliding bolt.” I explained grabbing a knob and closing a large thick panel in front of the door which in a simple way locked the door. I proved this by trying to open it. I then undid the bolt and opened the door. “Also your door doesn’t get jammed anymore. Noticed that problem personally.”           “I realigned kitchen cabinets so they aren’t slanted. Smoothed down all of your furniture and gave is softer curves so it wasn’t so sharp and uncomfortable. The circles on the wall were just something I saw on earth, it’s called modern art, it’s very simple and I made them large enough so if you wanted to hang up anything in them you could do that as well. I purified your crystal lights and recharged them, so they won’t be as dim as they were before, which is why it’s so bright in here.” I explained and the female just looked around to where I pointed and then I pointed to a door under the stairs.           “That right there is a personal bathroom, with a proper toilet and wash tub in case you want to wash clothes or yourselves.” I explained and the female looked at me stunned and confused. “A bathroom?” The female questioned and she went to the door and opened it and smiled happily, she nearly started crying.           “We had to use pots and take them out in the morning to a dump the mess out… This is wonderful, thank you. I don’t know how I could ever repay you.” The mother cried and I simply pointed upstairs. “I added something you might like upstairs.”           “What you have done is enough? What more could you do?” The Female asked just stunned with happiness as she followed me upstairs. “I’m sure some nights you just want privacy, so I made these for you. Their sliding accordion wall dividers.” I explained and simply showed how they worked and soon enough the parents side of the bedroom was utterly closed off. When Eni threw the door open with a bang, Ealhwyn sighed. How did such a little boy make such noise?

“They’re coming, they’re coming!” Eni chanted. He ran around the table where Ealhwyn was chopping carrots and parsnips and tugged on her skirt. “Come on, Módor!”

“Calm down, silly boy! I’m coming.” Ealhwyn set her knife down and leaned briefly against the table, breathing deep.

Eni pulled her along by the hand as they stepped into the hazy afternoon sun. Ealhwyn kept a hand against her swollen belly as they cut through the garden to the road. This baby was taking its time, and Ealhwyn was reaching the end of her rope. Eni at four didn’t seem to need any less attention than Eni at two or three, and baby Coenberg was barely walking but still managed to vanish the moment Ealhwyn looked away. Thank Béma that Coenberg was napping now.

Fortunately, Ealhwyn’s parents and their guard reached their gate almost as soon as Ealhwyn. She kept a tight hold of her son’s hand to keep him away from the horses’ stamping hooves, but she smiled and waved at her mother. Elswide dismounted with a grunt and hurried forward to sweep Eni into her arms.

“Westú Eni hal!” she said, kissing her grandson’s cheeks. She kissed Ealhwyn as well. “My lovely daughter! You’re glowing.”

Ealhwyn laughed helplessly. “I don’t feel it, Módor!”

Her father came and kissed her forehead. “Hello, daughter,” he said. “I can only stop for a little before I go to Meduseld.” Eni leaned out of Elswide’s arms and flung himself at his grandfather. “Oof! Eni, you’re bigger and bigger!”

The bustle of the horses cleared for a moment, and Ealhwyn blinked. She’d never imagined things before, but she could have sworn she saw a Wild Woman. That was impossible, though, so she turned away to bring her parents inside.

But Erkenbrand put a hand on her shoulder, face serious. “I cannot leave her outside,” he said. He tilted his head towards his guards, and Ealhwyn looked back.

All of the air went out of her lungs. She hadn’t been imagining things; there really was a Dunlending among her father’s guard. The Wild Woman was youngish, perhaps twenty-five, with dark hair in a short braid over her shoulder. She clutched a satchel under one arm and looked around with interest.

Ealhwyn stepped back and cradled her hand across her stomach. She was lightheaded and horrified.

“What is one of them doing here?” she hissed to her father.

Erkenbrand winced. “Peace, peace… I cannot speak of it out in the open. I don’t blame you, but she’s not a danger.”

“Not a danger?!” Ealhwyn reached out and pulled Eni out of Erkenbrand’s arms and into her own. Eni squirmed and gasped when he noticed the dark woman.

“Módor, who’s that?”

“A wicked woman,” Ealhwyn said, loud. She looked daggers at the Dunlending, who turned and looked right back with dark, evil eyes.

Goduin, one her father’s soldiers, groaned and hurried to the dark woman’s side. He flung a hooded cloak over her and wrapped a firm arm around her shoulders. The woman squirmed and pushed the hood back far enough so she could see. She stared at Ealhwyn and Eni.

Elswide tsked and went to bring the Dunlending forward to Ealhwyn, who drew back and held out her hand. Elswide and the woman stopped short just inside of Ealhwyn’s gate.

“No, Módor, keep her away!” Ealhwyn clutched her son tight and angled herself between Eni and the Dunlending. “I won’t—”

“This is Gwir,” Elswide interrupted sternly. She spoke over Ealhwyn. “Gwir is the daughter of a man of the Mark. She is our guest, and your rudeness is forgivable only because of your current state.”

Ealhwyn burst into tears and rushed into her house, barring the door behind her. She collapsed against the wall, still holding her son. Eni wriggled out of her arms and slid to the ground.

“Módor, it’s okay,” he said, patting her leg. “Grandmódor was mean but she’s not here anymore.”

In her crib, Coenberg began to cry.

Ten minutes later there was a knock at the door.

“Ealhwyn? It’s me,” her mother said. “I’m alone. Please open the door.”

Ealhwyn groaned. She had settled down with Coenberg in the wooden chair by the crib, and her daughter had fallen back asleep in her arms. Ealhwyn was loathe to disturb her. “Eni, open the door.”

“But Módor, you told me never to unbar the do—”

“Do as I say now,” Ealhwyn said.

Eni opened the door without another word and scampered back to his mother’s side. Elswide paused at the threshold and sighed at the sight of Ealhwyn and Coenberg together.

“Either come in or leave,” Ealhwyn snapped. She was still angry at her mother, and no amount of tenderness was going to make that go away.

Elswide came in and shut the door behind her. “I was looking forward to helping you with the birth, but if you are going to be like this, then I may yet leave.” She sat on the bench at the table and took up Ealhwyn’s discarded knife to finish chopping the vegetables.

“Just so long as you take that wicked woman with you,” Ealhwyn answered. “How could you bring her here?”

“She must be brought to Éomer King,” Elswide said sharply. She hacked away with force. “Your father has a duty to do the king’s bidding.”

Ealhwyn shook her head, baffled. “Éomer King ordered Fæder to bring him a Dunlending?”

“No, no.” Her mother scratched her chin. “But Gwir must be brought to Éomer King. There is… some business they must settle between them.”

“I must be very stupid,” Ealhwyn said, “because this makes no sense. There’s no reason at all for Éomer to need to see a foreign girl, no matter who her father was. She’s not a chief, or a princess, or anything like that. She looks like a commoner. Maybe a little pale, but really, Módor. I don’t understand. The only young women Éomer should be seeing are the ones he might marry.”

Elswide rolled her eyes. “Yes, yes.” She sighed as she chopped, and after a minute set down the knife and turned to face her daughter. “Well, he’s certainly not marrying Gwir. He can’t.”

“Of course not! She’s from Dunland.”

“That too.”

Ealhwyn blinked. What on earth was her mother getting at? It was more than enough that this Gwir was from Dunland, wasn’t it? She looked like a Dunlending, for all that her mother had said that her father was from the Mark. What other reason could there possibly—

Oh.

“Oh,” Ealhwyn said. She sat up straight. “Oh.”

“Say nothing about it,” Elswide said, low and urgent. Ealhwyn nodded, dumbstruck, and adjusted Coenberg against her shoulder. Elswide went back to chopping.

“Where… where is she now?” Ealhwyn dared.

“Your father brought her to Éomer King.” Elswide’s glance was reproachful. “We had hoped she might neaten up here. She’s no beauty, but she might have been neat if she’d had the space to do it.”

Ealhwyn didn’t see the point in feeling bad. How was she supposed to react, if not with suspicion? Dunlendings had almost destroyed the Mark, and here she was, pregnant and nearly defenseless. She could swing a sword, of course, but in her current state she was barely able to manage her children. Adrenaline might not be enough against a real enemy.

Anyway, how could her mother trust her? Whoever she was, she was still from Dunland.

“How can you trust her?” she asked.

Elswide hummed with thought. “I don’t,” she said. “Not entirely. I trust that she won’t do anything that would lead to her death. She wants to live, and she’s no fool. She wouldn’t do anything to endanger herself.”

“Except come here,” Ealhwyn pointed out. Coenberg shifted in her arms, and Ealhwyn winced as she started to cry again. “Oh, Módor…”

“Now, now,” Elswide said. She took Coenberg and cooed at her granddaughter, her wrinkles deepening with her smile. “Who’s a lovely girl? You are!”

“Thank you,” Ealhwyn said. She groaned and clutched her belly when the babe kicked, and her mother looked at her with a knowing grin.

“Soon enough, love. Soon enough.”
