Operation Matador: Wolf Killer Lestat
Tumblr media
@blueiight FACTS! Lestat represents everything both he & Louis claimed they hated, but secretly admired/envied. Lestat lives for the aesthetic--he grew up just as slovenly and broke as any peasant, in the marquis' crumbling chateau, embarrassed about his brothers' rough manners throwing bones to the dogs at the dinner table & such.
Tumblr media
For all Lestat's talk about being the rugged hunter, the Wolf Killer, the first chance he got he booked it to Paris to act the dandy Lelio. He HATED his family, and he admired/envied the lifestyles of the rich & fabulous. Part of why dandies act so flamboyant is because they're putting on airs--an emulation/exaggeration of what they thought the nobility/genteel acted like. The bourgeoisie/nouveau riche/lower & middle class all wanted to be JUST like the aristocratic elite--and the Reign of Terror showed how they became the monsters they were trying to kill. "I wanted to murder the man; I wanted to BE the man." Vicious cycles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
@likethemodel you keep doing this to me--STOP. 😵💫The Wolf Killer's red velvet cloak and the Bull Killer's red flag/cape, DANG.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lestat got the prized wolf fur cloak, and matadors are awarded the bull's ears (orejas) and tail (rabo) if they perform exceptionally well during the fight. Lestat's family ate the wolf meat, and after bullfights the bulls are sent to the slaughterhouse and sold as beef. THE PARALLELS commemorating BLOODY victory.
Tumblr media
@dirhwangdaseul And what's BANANAS is that Lestat is just as controversial as bullfighting itself. Their violence is not all/inherently bad, it's just whether one chooses to see it in a good/bad/neutral light. IWTV (i.e.: Louis & Claudia) is focused on making Lestat look bad. For Louis/Claudia, the "villain sequence" in Ep5 highlights how Lestat (dressed as The Killer (matador in Spanish)) is just like Akasha said in QotD: "so perfectly what is wrong with all things male." But that's not the WHOLE story, that's not ALL of what Lestat is, even though YES, when AR first wrote about him she was speaking from a place of pain & grief & anger about her own life. A decade later, AR had switched gears and gave Lestat his own perspective, as there's 2 sides to every story. In TVL he's FAR more sympathetic, and we see The Killer in a far more nuanced light, described best by Gabrielle (a la a mother's love).
Tumblr media
Lestat LOVES Louis & Claudia. But by Ep5 things had gotten so dang BAD that he succumbed to his worst impulses ("my father's temper"), taking upon himself "the burden of murder or madness to be free of this place." Just like the tragedy of Louis was that he was weak/cowardly; Lestat's tragedy is that he's strong/impulsive--he's always been "stronger than anyone else." He's Hercules, killing his wife & children in a fit of madness thinking they were a pack of lions. But the beast was INSIDE Lestat all along. It's classic Gothic Horror.
Tumblr media
@blueiight ALL OF THIS, yup! NGL I think Lestat's endless wealth made him an acceptable relic--his privilege saved him from being treated just like Paul. (Like, Paul acting up in public was only tolerated because of the money Louis kept pumping into the neighborhood (the church donations, those storefronts, etc), that made the DPDLs so respected.) There's a lot being telegraphed by Mr Bouillabaisse de Lioncourt partially because he's SO old that he's out of touch with modernity (I NEED to know if he was asleep before NOLA Rolin, PLEASE 🙏); partially because he's foreign and "there's things you don't get about America, Lestat;" and partially because he's white and he has no clue about the rich nuances of black culture until Louis educates him. (And even then Lestat insists he knows best--one-upping Jelly Roll Morton to create the Wolverine Blues (a la white people claiming blues/jazz/rock & roll Monsieur le Rockstar); whitesplaining about the race riots; etc...). And it's beyond hysterical that Louis was like "he ain't white, he's French," like SIR. 🤦 You of all people should be well-read enough about your own city, Mr. Heads on a Pike in Jackson Square, to know French Whites were the big bad wolves of NOLA's history--not to mention French imperialism across Africa & the Caribbean & Asia. 💀 (He's so lost in the sauce, bless his heart.) But Louis doesn't REALLY know Lestat, is the kicker.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@demonicdomarmand Soooooo multilayered. It's 100% satire @blueiight, agreed. Like, there's the IRL history of Mardi Gras flouting social/class hierarchies (turning everything upside down a la the Saturnalia); how Lestat plays into queer history through gender & drag; the Louis vs Antoinette of it all with the let them eat cake and French history; then they wrap it all up in a direct nod to vamps/demons accused of stealing/killing kids.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DIABOLICAL, AMC, please keep going.
Tumblr media
@nalyra-dreaming Show of the Decade! <3 IWTV has the best allegorical handling of vampirism I've ever seen, but folks wanna complain about raceswaps & Claudia's age & them not being on a plantation anymore, like HUH?
Tumblr media
@greedydemands I'm not LOL. Just living online and talking to all y'all teaches me more than I ever got in school.
Tumblr media
@thebarnburn LOL I'm a student, just proctoring--DR. CAROL CUTSHALL is out here with TENURE. 🍎 It's a effing crime the Emmy's snubbed IWTV--if we don't get some roses come S2 the fix is in, officially, cuz their attention to detail has been downright disgusting.

welcome to your life (there’s no turning back)
More Merripen Lavellan/Bull. I’ve actually been wanting to write a fic like this for a while. I think certain elvish inquisitors would have a really intense time choosing Briala, and I really wanted to explore that. I also love the idea of Bull watching his Kadan slowly come apart at the seams as war gets to them, knowing that there’s nothing he can do about it. So take this intense hurt/comfort fic. As always, you can find this on AO3 here!
-///-
Here’s the thing about war: it made monsters out of fucking everyone.
The Iron Bull had seen it in Seheron. He’d seen it when the mages and the templars started getting at each other’s throats. He’d seen it when Leliana and Cassandra ambushed a sleep-deprived elvish boy into becoming the leader of a movement based on a religion he didn’t believe in.
But - foolishly, against his instincts - he’d hoped it’d never happen to Lavellan.
The Winter Palace festivities hadn’t ceased since the assassination. If anything, they’d been spurred on by them. The tension had broken, the new emperor crowned in the blood of the old one, and the assassin dead at the hands of the Inquisition. Fucking Southerners. Didn’t give a damn about anything, so long as they could keep playing their little game. If Bull didn’t have more important things to be doing, he’d seek out Dorian and let the man’s complaining be voice enough for them both.
He did have more important things to do though.
He had an elf to find.
Considering he was the hero of the day; Merripen was as elusive as ever. The most powerful man in Thedas, for sure, but he was also some shy kid from the back end of nowhere. He knew how to disappear into the background, sometimes with as much efficiency as Cole.
Still, where he was, his advisors were never far behind. At least not in a shark’s nest like this. Cullen and Red stood conversing in front of one of the balcony doors. At first glance? Friends catching up. But Bull wasn’t interested in first glances. He knew guards when he saw them.
He made his way across the room. Leliana gave him a small nod as he passed. Interesting, that one. If they weren’t both already taken, he’d love to see what she was like in bed. She’d be exquisite.
But not as exquisite as his Kadan.
There he stood. He’d come out in the Inquisitions red, but he’d done red hair up in traditional dalish braids and let Dorian and Vivienne smear kohl over his eyes and paint onto his lips. The result was enticing; not quite as enticing as when he was covered in blood post-battle, mind, but enticing, nonetheless.
A statement too. Dalish braids, Dalish tattoos; the Inquisitor had thrown his lot in with the elves long before he decided Briala would take the reigns of the empire.
Yet, where most of the evening Merripen had been following Josephine’s etiquette lessons to the letter, he was now slumped forward, leaning far enough over the balcony that it would take barely any effort at all to tip her over it, even with his fast reflexes.
Instead, Bull wrapped his hands around him from behind, “Kadan,” he murmured, voice low, “good evening.”
Merripen’s hands, where they rested over the balcony railing, were shaking.
Ah. So tonight had made a monster of him, but not hardened him enough to his actions to take away the pain. Should that make him worry less, or more, he wondered?
“It’s a shite evening,” Merripen responded, voice so quiet compared to how loud he’d been out on the dance floor, making speeches and deciding the fate of kingdoms.
“You made a difficult decision,” Bull noted.
“Ha,” there was anything but humour in his tone, “I think you’ll find I made a very easy decision.”
And it was easy, wasn’t it? If Bull was in his position, it was the move that he would have made. Even if they had found some magic way to make Briala a member of the court, and keep Celene alive, having Briala run things in the background would be far more impactful when it came to changing the way elves were treated across Orlais.
And there were other reasons it should have been easy too. Merripen also killed people every day. Death was in his blood. It was in his magic as a necromancer. It was in his religion. He’d explained his tattoos more than enough times now for Bull to understand what the red lines on his face meant. Falon’Din, the elvish God of death and fortune.
But Merripen was also kind-hearted, on the inside. He worshipped the God of death, sure, but he also spent plenty of time after a battle walking around the corpses and praying for that same God to guide their souls across the veil. When they had the time. Once, he’d done it every time, but now—
Well. War made monsters out of fucking everyone. It hardened people inside and out.
Merripen’s hands were still shaking.
The point was, that Merripen worshipped the God of the Dead, but he did so to honour the dead, not to make more piles of them.
“You’ve not given an order like that before though,” Bull murmured.
“What? The order where I let an innocent woman die because it was in my best interests?” Merripen laughed, but it wasn’t a nice laugh. Bull quickly decided he hated it.
“I don’t think anyone would argue that Celene was innocent.” Rulers generally weren’t, not even Qunari ones. Not even Inquisitor Merripen Lavellan, anymore. The thought made Bull’s chest ache.
“Corypheus wanted her dead,” Merripen swallowed, “Leliana says it doesn’t matter, so long as there’s a strong ruler on the throne. But what the fuck do we know. Maybe Celene needed to die for some other reason, not just to plunge Orlais into chaos. And I helped.”
Bull sighed. His hands moved to take hold of Merripen’s, try and stop the shaking. “You didn’t help Corypheus, Kadan. Red’s right, the only thing he wanted was chaos,” which could still happen, with Briala pulling the strings. Everything would have been more stable with Celene. But it wouldn’t put the empire on the brink of collapse, “you made the right decision for your people.”
Merripen swallowed, “I know,” he breathed. “I think about—about the elves, killed in the servants’ quarters, and the alienage’s, and the way my clan was treated by outsiders and I know I made the only decision I could. It’s just—”
“Just that you had to kill someone to get it,” this was the issue with politics in the south. It was scheming, and backstabbing, and Merripen was doing it now too, even if he didn’t want to be. “and even with Briala ruling behind, you had to put that jackass on the throne who was calling you slurs behind your back all evening.”
Merripen sighed, “I don’t know why this is hitting me so hard. I kill people every day.”
“You kill people who are trying to kill you right back every day. I get it, Kadan,” Bull dropped his lips into Merripen’s hair, “I get why you’re upset, and why you did what you did.”
“The inquisition…it’s making me make decisions that I never—I’m not sure who I’m going to be, when this is all over.” A whispered confession, a fear, let out into the night air.
And there it was, wasn’t it? The problem. What war made people. Monsters. Hardened. Cold. Too many decisions. Too many damn hard decisions. You made them on behalf of yourself, or on behalf of others, but no matter what people got hurt. That’s what leading was.
It would tear Merripen apart, eventually, if he kept going as the leader of this thing.
Bull would fight tooth and nail to make sure that wouldn’t happen though. “You’re a good man, Merripen. You’re my Kadan. Still gonna be my Kadan when this is over and done with, if you want to be.”
Merripen turned in Bull’s arms, smiled weakly up at him. “I’m gonna need you to fuck me good when we get home.”
Bull chuckled, “yeah, yeah, no big decisions for a day, no decisions at all, I can do that.”
Merripen pressed his face against Bull’s chest.
Bull held him close.
It was all he could do.
Fuck, he hoped this war was over soon. Merripen needed it to be over soon, if he was going to come out of it with his sanity intact.

The Rose of Texas
Request: Female S/O and George writing love letters to each other please.
A/N: What was asked of me and what I provided are completely different. I had an idea and it snowballed into a product not only longer than intended but something I plan to work on further. In the end I wrote something that I wanted to write. I hope you enjoy it.
__________________________________________
12/02/1910
My Sweetest George
I assume its too late to say Merry Christmas while I’m writing to you, no doubt when you finally receive it. If it manages to get through whatever blockade is set up for the Red Cross Couriers. I should have written to you when I first departed. That night I left it felt like I hadn’t said enough to you, now I can barely think of any words that could explain the world I find myself in.  But like you say George, its best to start from the beginning. What I ask myself is what is the true beginning of this? I suppose your start would be me sneaking off in the middle of the night. I’ve had a lot of time to think about what I said to you that evening, or to be more accurate, to say what I yelled at you in blind anger. All the trouble I’m going through seems to be an appropriate punishment for my sins, but I still feel guilty for it. I guess I’m not as heartless as you think. Kidding aside I am truly sorry for what I said about you George, you are one of the best men I know. No man I’ve met can hold a candle to you, such a man does not deserve to be branded a coward because he refuses to follow every whim I have like a trained dog. Regardless of what you believe me to be, just know I deeply regret what I said to you. I love you George, do not ever think otherwise.
To most Canadians this ugly situation would have officially started back in ‘01’, when McKinley was shot dead and our beloved Roosevelt ascended to the Oval office, to the rank of self-appointed King. Another Caesar stabbed in the senate house with an opportunistic Augustus looking to forge his throne from the blood of the opposition. For every Pure Food and Drug Act making headlines, there was a coal miners strike repressed by federal troops. For every shining railroad built off the labour of the Southern states in his so-called relief camps, political opponents arrested and shipped out west. Corruption in the government pulled out like a weed and replaced with a loyal lap dog. Any man could see Roosevelt moved against anyone who dare opposed him with a vengeance, quickly and decisively. The press would say it was all in the name of stability and security; those journalists untouched by the Bears Claws at the cost of singing him endless praise and justifying every sin they could not cover up. The press in Canada more than happy to parrot their kin who looked up to the ever kind, ever present presidential king. How many truly knew the light of democracy that all sources held on the highest pedestal was being snuffed out. Fuel to the flame being cut by a tyrant who would stop at nothing to consolidate power around himself. Roosevelt’s party switch in the ‘04’ election should have been the wake-up call to the world, yet most remained ignorant. From the Republicans to the newly founded Progressive Party of America. The medias favourite figurehead as the acting chair; old officials sent to replace the ‘corrupt’ surprisingly changing sides to the governing party. The ignorant sang their praise at the man, no longer was America a two-party country, surely liberty and prosperity would follow us into the new century. The naïve and unenlightened will maintain that rhetoric, those paid to believe that it was the ungrateful south that opposed our King who kindly kept us under the federal government’s thumb. I guess we should be grateful to Roosevelt George: he had generously allowed our suffering to continue rather than slaughter the disgruntled southern population entirely, although even his media sources would have a rough time justifying that atrocity.
To me George, this started all the way back in ‘65’ with the end of the civil war. I’ve heard the cries that we are nothing more than a second coming of the Confederacy, succession is the last thing on our minds George. Instead of state and property rights; our cause is against tyranny and for a liberation of our enslavement. Only Lincoln wanted to reintegrate the confederates into the union. When he died so did any hope of unification. They liberated the slaves only to create a new breed to replace what was lost. While the new states in the west would thrive, we were kept in limbo, we were added back to the boarder but treated like foreigners, a conquered population, an enemy. P.O.W’s were sent home branded as traitors, permanently disfigured, or not at all. Their labour was used to rebuild the country they supposedly destroyed. If they refused: beatings would be felt, if they persisted: executed. All vailed as righteous punishment for a war that was spouted to end such treatment. When the work force gradually trickled back to their impoverished states the federal government still needed bodies for their factories, to build their rails, roads, to work for starvation wages. They have been stealing our men since the war’s conclusion, leave it to the Bear to expand upon a profitable idea. The men before him content with only conscripting the innocent for a camp or costly war abroad.
I remember the stories Pa would tell me of his time in the labour camps, whips, a hot iron and chains placed onto the worst offending farmers and militia men, not one rich enough to own a slave. That fact still true when they passed reforms for meager wages to be paid after years of free imprisonment. He’ll never tell us the full story of how he made it back to Texas. Just whispers about riots and hard choices being made. You’ve seen photos of him back when I was a youngling. It’s hard to imagine that moustache wearing the skin of an old gray back bludgeoning a guard for his freedom. He wore the uniform so his sons and daughters could wear suits and dresses. That fantasy gave way to reality when the Bear took the office. We all know now that was the turning point, the final act calm before the storms return.
When that French self-proclaimed Marxist revolutionary tried to rob Roosevelt of his life outside the senate building last September, we all knew there would be no turning back. A final push for greater political power while he was still in the hospital; forced eradication of opposing political parties, arresting any figure suspected of discontent towards the Bear, tightening the reigns on labour camps; all in the name of security and stability. Just short of a throne and crown for the new set appointed Royal and his noblemen. That revolutionary expected to trigger an uprising of the workers of America. Perhaps the French immigrant will be disappointed he mistook the civil discontent for an overthrow of the upper class. Maybe he’s in such a state with the provider answers given to him from outside that cell, upset that the only revolution to come is for the fate of our democracy rather than his ideology.
They call us Confederates, slaver, traitors: we are no such thing George. We didn’t betray the constitution, our foundations of the Republic. Our police forces haven’t arrested innocent diplomats and citizens for imagined crimes. The re-emerging National Unity Party did not crown a king. The Federalists fight for the Progressive Party and their oligarchies own interests. The Union States Of America fight for a greater purpose than self improvement; we fight for our republic, our constitution, our freedom. That is why I went home George, to save my country, not destroy it. The territory of an old enemy along with states tired of Washington’s rule now harbor the government they once opposed.
When we departed from Toronto, I expected the worst, years of training and work in hospitals as a nurse has filled my mind with standards for the dead and injured. All were surpassed when we arrived. Medical tents filled with victims of the Bull Run offensive executed by the federalist along the Virginian boarder. Such audacity does not surprise me: expecting us to falter at a single push into the Tennessee mountain ranges and entrenched divisions. Their hastily assembled army under Pershing has failed to end this war in the one fell swoop that the Bear has promised. As the winter snows began to set in November, we all knew this would be another long war.
However, we are determined to fight until our flag flies over Washington. The problems of the old war are gone. Allies from South America and Europe not blinded by the Tyrants propaganda rally behind us, bringing with them the newest toys of war. Self loading rifles from Mexico, artillery and generals from Germany, raw materials from Chile; manpower from all. I’m curious if it was more surprised to hear the Kaiser’s finest were getting involved rather than the United States got caught in another war. The old guards of Europe stay neutral for the time, I doubt the British will stand idle if an ally to the Germans were to set up south of their biggest dominion, not while world tensions are on the rise. I pray that this war stays contained to a single country. Perhaps with some luck the Germans, Unionists and British can unite against the tyrants of the North.
It must have been a field day for the parliament and press when the German Kaiserliche Marine flying the new flag of free America appeared off the eastern coastline. We don’t always get the best information of their front, rumours of skirmishes between the two fleets at best. It’s ironic: after the Spanish American war the federalist tried to bring their armada into the modern age. Their expensive steel monsters laying at the bottom of the Atlantic or under siege in harbour to another European power; neutralized, useless. Unable to halt the merchants and never-ending convoys bringing supplies into the bastion of freedom that will be their undoing. The southern men they conscripted as canon fodder returning home with knowledge of war. Liberated slave labour taught the craft of large-scale production under the threat of death now building our infrastructure from the rubble it was left in. All in due time George, we will rebuild our homes into a flourish state.
The war was quiet for most of December; everyone was busy drawing lines on maps to lay claim to whatever they could get their hands on. When the dead and wounded came down to what the regulars call “acceptable levels”, the medical staff finally got some rest. I got word from my older brother; he’s been stationed in loyal Missouri as a mechanic. Apparently, he learned a few more tricks with a wrench while interned in Wisconsin last year. He’s still not pleased I moved up to Canada, it’s not my fault there was no work in Texas. He’s a stubborn man, stuck in his own mind most of the time. He really is a spitting image of my Ma at times.
He did tell me something wonderful. Since the actual constitution was re-enacted after our schism the original voting laws have been put in place. Any citizen who owns property has a formal vote in government affairs. My brother wrote to me and informed me that after I left Pa added my name to the family homestead. I was able to vote George; man or woman, gender and race made irrelevant in a single move. Now I know they say a man’s vote is his own business, but I won’t pretend I’m not pleased with President Wilson being sworn in as the true leader American republic. God willing, he’ll be able to see us through these trying times.
In more personal news George, I have an update. I received a promotion of sorts, although I’m sure you would have a less glamorous title for it. Back in January our medical unit got assigned to the 12th Union Division near the Missouri, Illinois boarder. We were near the front providing what we could to soldiers on rotation to reserves when our dressing station was attacked by the federalists. Apparently, they exploited a breach the line and rushed into gain land. We were doctors and nurses being targeted, fresh faced recruits and wounded apparently a grave threat.
Pa always said I had the best shot in the family, hunting rabbits in my youth to avoid starvation has paid off. I managed to organize what soldiers remained and we held the federalists off, long enough for the reserves to come in. I’ll spare you the details George, but shooting an animal isn’t much different than a man. Not here at least.
We managed to push them back to the starting line of trenches before they gave up. In the heat of the moment no one noticed or cared about a nurse with a rifle and ammo pouch along side them. It came to a marksman battle between the two trenches cut short by an artillery barrage. When the explosions and flying dirt came back down to earth the Boots finally noticed the out of place skirt.
I received a medal for my work. “For outstanding bravery in service of the American Republic, her citizens or sons of war in the daunting presence of the enemy.” Words inscribed on the back of a silver wolves head now pinned to my new uniform. The same animal that occupies our flag. The red and white stripes guarded by a ferocious beast.
I expected to be chewed out for stepping out of line. Instead, punishment gave way to practicality and I was given the ability to be more than a subject for propaganda.  I agreed to become a Lance Corporal for the first company in the division. A hybrid of marksman and field medic, whatever the situation calls for. I’m happy to serve my country however I can, even if the task has become more deadly. I will answer the call, even if I maybe one of the only woman on the battlefield of this war. I know I still have to earn the respect of the men around me, citizen soldier or foreign volunteer. I know I can rise to the challenge George. I know I can prove myself to be a model soldier, perhaps an officer if I get lucky. I know I can be the strong woman you believe in. I know that together our united effort from around the globe can crush the tyrants of the North.
I don’t expect you to forgive me for what I’ve sin to you George. I want nothing more than to be back by your side. To be held in your arms that seem to protect me from the horrors of the world. We might be in for a lengthy war, but I have eternal confidence, our armies, our allies, our mission for freedom for all Americans; not just those in the Bears preferred party. Our armies will march north until we reach the Canadian boarder, crushing all resistance in our path. Then George, perhaps we can be together once again.
Lance Corporal y/n Crabtree.

MotoGP: Bagnaia takes pole position at Circuit of the Americas (updated) – Roadracing World Magazine
MotoGP qualification
More from a press release from Dorna:
Pecco takes pole position with another maniac in Texas
Quartararo starts second, Marquez locks out the front row and Miller faces another attack while the grid is ready for a classic
Sunday, October 03, 2021
Three is now a magic number for Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) on Saturdays. With a lead of more than three tenths of a second, Pecco is only the second rider to start from pole in Texas after Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), but he has company with key championship rival Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP). . The Frenchman is again second to keep an eye on the Italian, with the aforementioned COTA Sheriff Marc Marquez having to settle for third place – but it’s the first front row of the year as the eight-time world champion is back after his fight the front continues at the top.
Q1
Reigning champ Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) had fallen behind in Q1 and was looking for a way out, and for much of the session it seemed like he was going to get through the quickest. But Luca Marini (Sky VR46 Avintia) had other ideas, and the Italian rookie took a late lunge on the tip to take the lead. However, I stayed second to prevail and defeat Franco Morbidelli (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP).
Andrea Dovizioso (Petronas Sprinta Racing) drove a good lap late, but the Italian was overtaken behind other drivers and narrowly missed.
Valentino Rossi (Petronas Sprinta Racing) crashed, as did Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini), drivers okay.
Q2
After the first rounds in the second quarter, it was the King of COTA who secured the throne – certainly on Saturday – with Marc Marquez in front of the chasing group. But there was still a lot in the closet for Quartararo and Bagnaia, and the eight-time world champion could not quite improve on his previous best performance.
However, Pecco could. The Italian showed an absolute force late and put everything on his second and last attempt at the front. The Italian crossed the finish line with a lead of almost half a second over Marquez and crossed the finish line to take the provisional pole position. Quartararo and Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) were still missing …
Quartararo was up initially, but for Miller the attack never came. The Australian was unable to repeat his scorching form from previous sessions and was out of the race after time ran out. What could El Diablo do? Since the times came later in the round, it wouldn’t be enough, and Marquez hadn’t made a better effort. For the first time ever, someone other than number 93 is on pole position at COTA: Bagnaia.
The grid
Bagnaia leads Quartararo as the first two to lock the top again, now with Marquez by his side as an eight-time world champion in third place. Jorge Martin (Pramac Racing), who had been behind Marquez when the Honda driver was fighting for provisional pole, stayed there and now leads the second row – also as the best independent team driver.
It’s actually a completely independent second row, with Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) continuing the good weekend in fifth place and Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing) driving back to the sharp end in P6 after his arm pump operation prior to the event.
2019 COTA winner Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) pushed reigning champion and teammate Joan Mir to P7 as the Suzuki duo led the third row, followed by Marini, who as a Q1 graduate showed his impressive form in Q2 continued and was ninth.
Miller is tenth and is eager to assert himself again, with Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Pol Espargaro (Repsol Honda Team) the last of them in Q2, respectively in P11 and P12.
This is a final point on Saturday because the stage is perfectly prepared after qualifying … the first two of the championship and the King of COTA lead the grid, with another horsepower rodeo just around the corner. Can Marquez make seven out of eight? Can Bagnaia become the first Ducati rider since Casey Stoner to win three on the go? Or will Quartararo get Yamaha’s first win in Texas? Tune in at 14:00 (GMT -5) to find out.
Francesco Bagnaia: “We worked a lot all weekend, we took a big step in FP4, because I was in trouble up to FP3. But we took a big step in FP4 and I really enjoyed the lap in qualifying because I wasn’t expecting it. On the first lap I saw that I had a lead and it was possible to do another lap, then on the second try I tried to push from the first brake and everything was perfect, well, the last corner was a bit wide, but everything was fine. I am very happy, it is very important to start from P1. “
Raul Fernandez continues to rule the position in Moto2
Tumblr media
The rookie takes a sensational sixth pole, but this time Gardner starts alongside
Raul Fernandez prevailed in another Red Bull KTM Ajo qualifying duel at the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas as the first two of the World Championship lineups P1 and P2 on the grid for the Sunday race. Leader Gardner was 0.320 behind Fernandez ‘2: 08.979 as the rookie got the upper hand on Saturday, with Fabio Di Giannantonio (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) gaining a first start from the front row since the German GP in 3rd place.
Q1
Marcos Ramirez (American Racing) found some pace to beat the session by three tenths, ahead of Celestino Vietti (Sky Racing Team VR46) when the rookie Italian did the job in second to prevail. The gaps from there were tiny, with Somkiat Chantra (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) only 0.014 and Tony Arbolino (Liqui Moly Intact GP) 0.040 behind Chantra.
That was enough to pull them off and that failed because of Marcel Shrötter (Liqui Moly Intact GP) and it was a tough session for Joe Roberts (Italtrans Racing Team) as the home hero finished Q1 in P12.

With four minutes to go, Sam Lowes (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team) crashed into P15 uninjured, and then all eyes were on Raul Fernandez. The Spaniard was 0.029 under Gardner’s time in the second split and then an impressive three-tenths faster through sector 3. In fact, it was P1 for Raul Fernandez on his final flying lap, a scorching time that secured him pole at COTA. Gardner will have to settle for second place, but will be happy to have reached Saturda, with Diggia hanging in the front row.

Behind Raul Fernandez, Gardner and Diggia at the head of the field, Bezzecchi and Beaubier held their positions in the final stages, taking P4 and P5 rows in Texas, while his MotoAmerica experience and home magic come to the fore. Augusto Fernandez (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team) starts from the outside of row 2 on P6.

Raul Fernández: “I’m really happy, it was an incredible lap, especially because we changed tires in the middle of practice, and I was really happy. I was a bit surprised, I didn’t know how to improve before the tire change, but when I saw the lap time I thought, wow, amazing! It was a really difficult ride this weekend with the bumps, but in the end I’m really competitive, but so is Remy on this track and I hope we have a good fight tomorrow. “
Masia masters COTA to contest Foggia pole
The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider is back at the top in Texas, Foggia second and Acosta in 15th place
Jaume Masia is back on top in Texas! The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider took his fourth career pole and the second of the season at the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, beating Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing) by a few tenths at the top. Jeremy Alcoba (Indonesian Racing Gresini Moto3) completes the front row, just 0.003 ahead of Foggia.
Q1
In Q1, both Darryn Binder (Petronas Sprinta Racing) and teammate John McPhee were looking for a way and they both found one, but it was rookie Lorenzo Fellon (SIC58 Squadra Corse) who led the session despite a crash. Alberto Surra (Rivacold Snipers Team) was the last rider to get through.
Carlos Tatay (Avintia Esponsorama) crashed, driver ok and just missed 0.028.
Q2
The battle for pole boiled down to Masia versus Foggia, with the Spaniard taking the lead as the Italian made his final push. Behind team-mate Xavier Artigas (Leopard Racing), Foggia’s first sector was a red sector, but as the lap went he lost touch enough to take on a real challenge for pole. That left Masia unchallenged in taking his second pole of the season, but Foggia still starts second as he continues his mission to close the gap to the championship. Alcoba was third.
The world championship leader Acosta, who also drove with teammate Masia, could not do much at the top and finished 15th, while his rookies Izan Guevara (Solunion GASGAS Aspar Team) and Artigas left him a little behind on Saturday and finished fourth and fifth or
The grid
Masia, Foggia and Alcoba lead the grid ahead of the rookie duo. For Guevara it is his second best qualifying so far and it is Artigas’ best, albeit best starting position of the season … not an easy task for drivers making their debut at Mammut COTA. Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse) completes row 2.
Friday’s fastest, Filip Salač (CarXpert PrüstelGP) leads the third row, ahead of Andrea Migno (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Tech3). McPhee completes the top ten with two-time COTA winner Romano Fenati (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team) on a somewhat surprising P11 and Niccolo Antonelli (Avintia VR46 Academy) on P13.
Acosta 15th, Foggia at the front and Masia without this pressure at the zenith of the title fight could make for an interesting racing day in Texas. Make sure you compete in Moto3

versus COTA on Sunday at 11:00 (GMT -5). Can Foggia Do It Again?
Jaume Masia: “I didn’t expect this lap because I had a moment on the first tire at Turn 3 on the first run, but on the last lap I tried not to lose too much time in the first sector because the track was super long is to fill the gap. But I had a good reference and it was really helpful. “

Fatherly Adventures with the Captain Chapter 9: Come Home
The one thing she notices about their home is that boy, do they have a lot of books. However, when your husband is the most inquisitive man whose lived for like three hundred years and your son is the author, not just an author, but THE author- it’s to be expected.
Their house, she would say, perfectly describes their little family. Henry’s scarf and coat hangs on their coat rack, right by their front door. Killian’s leather jacket on the hook next to it, followed by her red leather jacket, tying up the whole ensemble.
Killian’s shoes are always neatly placed on their shoe rack, and let’s just say hers and Henry’s are usually haphazardly strewn across the entrance to their home.
Their living room has an open feel to it- in fact, it’s probably where you’ll find them every night after dinner. Their coffee table, handcrafted by Marco and specifically designed per her and Henry’s requests to look like a treasure chest (much to Killian’s surprise and delight), often holds cups of hot chocolate, bowls of popcorn and milk duds, as the family settles in for their movie nights. This is where Henry’s love for Star Wars, Emma’s love for the classics like Back to the Future, Breakfast Club, 16 candles, are introduced and shared with Killian. She’s worried that as Henry gets older that these movie nights might seem lame to him, but she’s already missed out on so much. But she finds that she’s got nothing to worry about- she’s got a great kid- one that gets just as pumped for movie nights as them.
She remembers when she was the Dark One wanting to incorporate little aspects of Killian into their home, but to be honest, home decorating was definitely not her focus or priority at the time. Now that they’ve settled into a more peaceful routine devoid of monsters, villains, and fairies, Killian’s added upon her choices during her stint as the Dark One Decorator. Their library with all the books has many of the maps he’s drawn as Captain proudly framed and hung. His sextant is displayed, along with the compass from his and Emma’s journey. He’s got a dart board in their library, where he’ll swear by his aim and precision. Her favorite though is when he’ll make that dopey face at her when he hits a bulls eye as she’s curled up on the lounge chair, enjoying the quiet moment and more often than not, catching up with her mom on the phone. His silly face makes her fall in love with him all over again.
The first couple of weeks since they found out that she’s pregnant, it’s only her, Killian, and Henry that know. It’s kind of exciting that this is something only the three of them know and can share, but also something that she needs. The last time she was pregnant she was in a far different situation- there was no excitement, there were no hugs or kisses. Instead there was fear- there was coldness- and those are feelings that stick with you. So while they wait for the all clear from the doctor before announcing it, she’s also working through these feelings- letting herself not feel guilty that this pregnancy is and will be different from the last, allowing herself to feel excitement over this child and being able to share this experience with Henry, even though she didn’t have it when she was pregnant with him. It’s also an eye opening experience for Killian- he’s had to confront his past demons himself- coming to terms with his father’s abandonment for his children and then Killian’s actions in retaliation.
The night before their 10 week check up with the doctor, she finds herself sandwiched in between her two boys, after finishing Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Tomorrow once they get the clear from the doctor, they’ll be telling her parents that they’ll get to be grandparents again- the youngest second time grandparents this world has ever seen. She can already hear  the high pitched noises and squeals her mother will make and she already knows her father’s not gonna be able to calm her down, ever.
Vaguely listening to the two men in her life talk about their favorite heists/pranks from the movie, she starts to imagine how soon there’ll be a high chair added to their dining room, one of those sleeper chairs that rocks the baby in their living room. She can see it now- there’ll be baby books chosen by Henry all throughout the house- their little shoes will soon find their own place with Killian’s, Henry’s and hers by their front door. It’s something she never had, something she could never give Henry, but now she gets her second chance.
“Mom, are you okay?”
She’s startled out of her own thoughts by Henry’s worried tone. Quickly placating him, she throws her arm over his shoulder and ruffles his hair- just like she’s always done from the first time he brought her to Storybrooke. “Don’t worry kid, just got lost in my own thoughts. Pretty soon our house is gonna have baby stuff and I was just imagining how that’s gonna look like.”
“It’s gonna be awesome! I was thinking- what kind of mobile should the baby have in their room? I mean, I know Grandpa and Grandma planned for unicorns in yours, but I feel like we’ve got to find a way to combine Savior and Pirate for my brother or sister.” Henry’s excitement for his new sibling was something she’s eternally grateful for each and every day. She remembers the disappointment and the sinking feeling she had when she learned her parents were having another baby. But trust Henry to not only have the heart of the truest believer, but to literally be the most excited big brother. He wanted to know everything- how big’s the baby now, what can the baby do now- can it hear? can it see? is it sucking its thumb? He made it his and Killian’s mission to make sure that she wasn’t overdoing it- they’ve called it Operation Nesting Swan- they tell her it’s a working title. “Don’t forget author, lad.” Her heart melts  hearing Killian chime in. From day one, he’s stepped into the shoes of fatherhood for Henry, never treating him any differently or distantly because he wasn’t biologically Henry’s father. And since they found out news of the baby, he’s made it abundantly clear to their son that his relationship with Henry wouldn’t change and that Henry was just as much a part of this happy beginning and addition to the family.
Henry’s smile at Killian’s suggestion brought the same to both Emma and Killian. She knew that keeping a secret from his other mom and grandparents, hell the whole town, was really tough on Henry, so she knew that once they got the okay from the doctor, he was going to be unstoppable then- he already was practically bursting at the seams. And speaking of which, she knew that there was no way she would be able to reign in Killian. Every time they’ve visited the doctor, he’s requested for a copy of the sonogram- she wouldn’t be surprised that once news spread, she would find her husband showing the whole town each and every picture.
She couldn’t believe it- how far she had come, everything she’d faced- there were definitely times where her happy ending seemed impossible, where the picket fence life seemed so unattainable. But now here she was sitting in their home- a home she made with her husband, once a lost boy, who was on the verge of becoming a father, and what a wonderful father he would be. A home she made with her son, the boy she had to give up so he could have his best chance, who now found it with her, was growing up to be everything and more than what she wanted and dreamed for him, and she would get to witness it. A home where this newest duckling, who decided at that moment to move around her belly and make their presence known, would be joining them in just a couple of months.
As she rested her hand on her growing bump to soothe her duckling, she thought, oh baby, we love you so much already and we can’t for you to come home.

Who’s top MLS MVP candidate? For many All-Stars, it’s Atlanta’s “monster"
Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports
July 31, 20183:28PM EDT
MARIETTA, Ga. – Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game presented by Target (8:30 pm ET | ESPN, UniMás, TSN, TVAS – Full TV & Streaming info) will prominently feature most of the leading contenders for the 2018 Landon Donovan MLS MVP Award, providing a national showcase for them to display their quality.
There’s All-Stars captain Carlos Vela (8 goals, 5 assists), the face and heartbeat of impressive expansion side LAFC, and host-city hero Miguel Almiron (8 g, 11 a), the conductor of Atlanta United’s explosive attack, as well as perennial MVP contenders like Toronto FC dynamo and 2015 winner Sebastian Giovinco (6 g, 10 a), Montreal Impact maestro Ignacio Piatti (11 g, 9 a) and New York Red Bulls goal king Bradley Wright-Phillips (14 g, 5 a).
But ask around the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground, site of the All-Stars’ training session on Monday morning, and one name keeps popping up ahead of the rest.
“I would have to go with Josef Martinez,” said Columbus Crew SC goalkeeper Zack Steffen. “He’s a monster.”
Atlanta’s Venezuelan striker appears to be the clear MVP frontrunner, powered by an unprecedented scoring rate that’s netted him 24 goals in 23 league matches, putting him on pace to not just pass but smash the league’s single-season scoring record of 27, jointly held by Wright-Phillips, Roy Lassiter and Chris Wondolowski. Second place on the Golden Boot table is Zlatan Ibrahimovic of the LA Galaxy with 15, a whopping nine goals behind Martinez.
It can only help his case that ATLUTD are the league’s frontrunners at present, topping the Supporters’ Shield standings in both total points and points per game.
“Looking at Atlanta, the way they play, how they dominate games, it’s why people talk about them,” said 2017 MLS MVP Diego Valeri of the Portland Timbers, dismissing the idea that the Five Stripes’ big home crowds and attack-first tactics have pumped up their players’ national reputations.
“Obviously, Josef is scoring an amount of goals that is unbelievable.”
Even Martinez’s teammate Almiron, who some consider his closest competition for MVP, is quick to promote his credentials.
“I think that Josef is fighting for a lot of awards: the Golden Boot, the MVP. Hopefully my teammate can win these,” said Almiron, while admitting that he “tries not to think about” his own candidacy for individual honors.

It’s not just Martinez’s raw statistics and team success that have impressed his colleagues around the league. It’s the relentlessness and passion with which he attacks, an obsession for scoring that transforms his mild-mannered off-field persona into a raging terror between the lines.
“His mentality for goalscoring – it’s like if he doesn’t score, then he can’t eat, I feel like that’s what he tells himself,” Steffen said. “It’s absurd. I’ve never seen someone so aggressive in the box, and want to score so badly.”
“He’s really strong and he’s very quick, and he’s very deceptive.”
That single-mindedness shows itself in Martinez’s own stated thoughts on the MVP debate. He maintains that he’s got other hardware in his sights – the team kind.
“Obviously it’s not up to me!” he said with a slight chuckle when asked about the MVP award.“There are many players that deserve it. It’s not my job – my job is only to play well for the team, this is all.”
“Individual awards don’t matter much to me. What matters to me is being a champion. That’s all.”
Notably, the reigning MVP offered up a slightly cautionary note: As the 2018 campaign enters its final stretch, individual performances take on extra weight as awards voters hone in on their best options.
“There’s a ton of unbelievable players with the talent to win that award. MLS is getting more and more players all the time that can be in that race,” said Valeri. “Now is the most important part of the season, so probably what happens in this last part of the year will dictate.”

Marquez, Pedrosa Continue Developing RC213V At MotoGP Sepang Test Day 2 Bad weather and damp conditions meant most of day 2 of Sepang MotoGP testing was a wash. Nonetheless, HRC riders Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa used the limited dry time to continue developing the 2017 RC213V. Begin Press Release: Development work continues for Repsol Honda Team on second day at Sepang Heavy overnight rain left a damp track today at Sepang and kept the riders in the pits for more than half of the second day of testing. Temperatures also were slightly cooler than usual in Malaysia, with a max of 30° C air, 38° ground. Reigning World Champion Marc Marquez and teammate Dani Pedrosa took to the track as soon as it was dry enough, after 2 p.m. They continued their development work on their RC213V machines, both of which were equipped with the same engine’s new configurations. Tests of the Michelin tyres also continued for both. Marquez’s fastest time of 2’00.531” (lap 27 of 33) placed him 10th for the day. Pedrosa finished in 14th place with his time of 2’00.886” (lap 38 of 44). The test will conclude tomorrow. Marc Marquez 10TH 2’00.531 “We started late like everyone this afternoon because of the track conditions, and generally speaking, it was a challenging day. We spent a lot of time in the garage working on sorting out many little things. It’s okay, as this is the pre-season and it’s better to work and solve all these issues now, but of course this takes time. We have a lot of work to do to find a good setup for the bike and the electronics. That said, our rhythm wasn’t too bad and hopefully tomorrow we’ll improve our pace and speed. We must keep focused and work hard. I’m sure that step by step we will get better!” Dani Pedrosa 14TH 2’00.886 “Today we started working as soon as the conditions allowed, even if the track was still damp here and there. We made a re-check of some setup details we wanted to improve, and the positive is that we actually bettered them by about 50%. We’re not yet where we want to be, but it’s still a step forward. Other positives to the day are that I did my fastest time on a quite used tyre and that we did some good work on the fork and on one front tyre as well. Unfortunately, at the end of the session we weren’t able to fit a new tyre and try a time attack, but hopefully tomorrowwe’ll have time to do more tests on the tyres and setup and to try and improve our lap times.” MotoGP 2017 Tuesday, January 31st 2017 Testing Sepang Official Test Results Session MIXED CONDITIONS Track Temp 38°C Air Temp 30°C Pos.
