siobhan's series masterlist
(most of these works are plot bunnies, concepts/ideas and will be worked on when i have the time/spoons)
The Emissary Verse - The Emissary Verse is a patchwork fic of the DC universe, with some aspects of Marvel (specifically Moon Knight), all revolving around original character Amber Talbot, and her interactions with the universe. The series has one planned story (Electric Feel), and several stories that are more conceptual in nature (Decode, Edge of Midnight and Marvelous).
The Butterfly Effect - A P5 Arcanaswap AU currently undergoing its fourth rewrite - this AU focuses on Fool Yusuke, and other arcanaswaps among the Phantom Thieves and confidants, and how the changes in character will change the story and the plot. While currently undergoing a rewrite, you can find the original story here.
The Fame Demon - A mostly conceptual horror series revolving the price of fame, and the things people will do to get fame. The first story, titled the Fame Demon, focuses on a boy band from the late 90s who broke up after their manager was found murdered trying to regain fame and success at any cost, even selling their souls. A later, currently untitled story is a role reversal of Steven King's Misery, with an author taking the form of the antagonizer to a critic that insulted their work.

I feel like it’s been awhile since we visited ot4 and just feel the need to check up on them, how are they? Anything interesting happen to them lately? In a ot4, does Roger still tour after John steps back from queen? Is there tension there?
omg i’ve missed ot4 so much and i still have an ot4 ask about good dad roger that i need to post
 but anyway
okay
very important for everyone to know but in any and all of my au’s freddie does not die
ever
E V E R
in ot4, freddie and jim get together before the whole hot space debacle and their relationship is kinda grown/tested through the whole break thing
like freddie realizes he wants a relationship so he and jim make it work
also freddie is so much more busy keeping roger from choking to death on his own vomit that he doesn’t have the time or energy or want to go out and party and hook up
so he and jim get together, stay together, and neither get sick
H O W E V E R
in the 90s (probs about ‘95/’98 somewhere between there) the band decides to slow the fuck down
they’ve been touring for like, over 35 years they’re tired
(also roger throws out his back having incredibly acrobatic sex and is unable to drum)
john basically puts his foot down and is like we have spent more time on the road than we have at home
you’re crippled
our children are growing up
time for a break
roger, propped up in bed with a million pillows, unable to turn his head or move his torso: i’m fine i can drum
so john handles it all and calls freddie and is like hey from now on small tours only, anniversary tours, etc.
freddie, who is also suffering from a sex related injury (hurt hip) is like ugh FINE
brian who’s most adventurous sexcapade was when anita got on top is super fucking salty about it and starts blogging about how SOME PEOPLE need to take BETTER CARE of their bodies while posting pics on his bike
(john comments on it “i do more than enough riding in the bedroom thanks very much”
roger: save a bike ride a bassist
dominique comments just a picture of male legs hooked over hers on a bed like: we even ride backwards sometimes
veronica: working up a sweat in the bedroom burns about 239 calories, so multiply that by four
brian disables the comments )
(robbie calls them up and is like please for the love of god STOP discussing your sex lives okay its gross
which sparks a family meeting where they sit all of the kids down in the living room
veronica and dominique give the kids an incredibly detailed three hour lecture about the importance of sex within a relationship and how older couples not only SHOULD be having sex but CAN
roger has blatantly turned off his hearing aids and is Not Listening
john is dead eyeing robbie like you brought this upon yourself and if i have to suffer, so do you
robbie is shrinking down on the couch humiliated, vera is focusing more on her cuticles, daisy is doing her best not to look anyone in the eye, the twins who aren’t twins (HA&HA) are very interested in the floor, and the other five are just horrified beyond belief
)but anyways back to touring
they still go on some tours? and they do a big reunion one a few years down the line and obvi its successful af
ot4 settle into being parents and grandparents and having their large but incredibly loving family

That same year, the nation had received full independence from France. As the country entered a new post-colonial era, Sory photographed the vibrant youth culture that emerged. Spanning 20-some years, his collection of portraits features lovers kissing, smiling friends with a boombox, and style so fly it could belong in a high-fashion magazine from any era. The artist, who still lives and works in the area, began touring exhibitions of his work in the late ’90s. 'Nosferatu' Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror Released in 1922, Nosferatu is just a few years shy of its 100th anniversary, and somehow still manages to be creepy. Part of that effect may come from its on-location sets and beautifully framed shots, and Max Schreck’s performance as the titular monster certainly factors into its legacy. Yet another spooky aspect is the film’s soundtrack, which has been adapted and reimagined over the years. This Halloween, guests can head to the Music Box Theatre for a screening set to a live soundtrack from the Curse of the Vampire Orchestra, by Minneapolis composer Philip Shorey. The score features a local symphony and choral musicians mixed with modern electronica and industrial percussion. 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18-19; 3:30 p.m. Oct. 19. Free; RSVP required. MN Toy Posse Image courtesy event organizers MN Toy Posse Halloween Bash 3 What happens when you combine 70 toy sellers from all over the Midwest, hundreds of toy fans of all ages, and thousands of rare and unique toys and collectables? You get one giant posse. This weekend, the Minnesota Toy Posse will host its third-annual Halloween Bash toy swap. Posse founder Mark Seekamp started the group a little over three years ago on Facebook as a way to help connect people looking to buy, sell, or trade their favorite toys. He hadn’t planned on just how many people would want to join his gang. “We have more than 2,200 members, and it’s a really active group,” he says. And it’s not just about toys, either. “We’ve become friends and talk about our lives. People will post pictures when they have a baby, or we’ll just use it to meet up and go see a movie. It’s about creating relationships beyond just looking for toys.” For Seekamp, the best part of the day is how toys can bring people together. “The coolest part is being able to see someone who is going to be really excited about a toy that you have that you’re ready to part with.” 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 20. Silver Jack Relationship Alphabet :
@silverjackfan this is for you ;3 💜
A- Activity (what is their favorite activity to do with you?)
Silver Jack likes... I mean LOVES to show you some of his magic tricks. He's very good at it because... Well, he can bend reality. He adores when you watch his enigmatic moves in awe as he let the magic do its work through his hands. He used to practice alone, it was nice but... It lacked an audience ya know? So now that you're here, he can show you what he's capable of!
B- Beginnings (How do they act in the beginning of a relationship?)
One word: Clingy. This boy is touch starved and needs a lot of attention. He always manages to touch you when you're around. Lots of hugging, hands holding, nuzzles, kisses, and so on. He also really likes to wrap his long tail around your body, it's one of his way to say "i love you". But of course, if you think he's too clingy and you ask him to stop, he'll stop. But he'll need some physical contact eventually.
C- Communication (Are they good communicators? How do they normally talk about their problems or solve issues?)
He's very very talkative, charismatic and clever, OF COURSE HE'S A GOOD COMMUNICATOR. He certainly knows that communication is key in a relationship so if he has a problem he'll vent it to you most of the time. And usually he prefers to solve problems on his own, he can manage it. However, if it's something related to his past life in hell, Silver will have a lot of difficulty trying to find the right words to describe it so he just ends up not talking about it much. Don't blame him, words can hardly describe what he went through down there...
D- Drunk (what are they like when they're drunk?)
First of all he needs a lot of alcohol to get drunk. Firstly because he's a very tall boy but also because he's a demon and normal amount of alcohol usually doesn't do much to him.
Second of all if you thought he was being physical before just wait until you see him drunk. His hands are all over you... In a not-so-innocent way :> He might not be much aware of his huge claws anymore so be careful not to end up with several cuts. Aside from that he's very joyful and giggly.
E- Emergency (How are they in emergency situations? You get hurt, they get hurt, someone is dying... Etc.)
He knows what to do in emergency situations, how he feels depends on the kind of emergency though. If he gets hurt, he will literally just stare at the wound and say "Oh... How unfortunate..." while shrugging. However if YOU get hurt he will freak out. He'll reassure you and take care of you correctly but you'll feel his fear. Just make sure to reassure him once you're out of danger, he might shake a bit because he was so damn scared.
F- Free spot (I'll give you any headcanon I come up with)
If he gets embarrassed/flattered/shy, his pointy ears will start to lightly flutter, his tail will wiggle and his pale cheeks will take a light pink color. It's very cute to look at tbh. Also, the movements his tail makes can be an indicator of his current mood.
G- Gifts (What kind of gifts do they give? What kind of gifts do they get?)
Jewelries. Listen, Silver Jack loves shiny objects kinda like a magpie would. Anything shiny, no matter its value, will catch his eyes. He's fascinated. He'll steals get some for you if you like it. Although if you prefer different kind of gifts he'll do his best to satisfy you. And really he's not difficult when it comes to gifts. Give him anything shiny like a spoon or whatever and he'll be over the moon. "Prettyyyyy~"
H- Hugs (How does they show affection/cuddle?)
Have I mentioned how needy he is already? Seriously give this rat a hug he really needs it. In the most traditional way, he just likes to hug your much smaller form, kiss you, nuzzle you or holding your hands. For the less traditional way he likes to show affection by nibbling at your hair/the clothes you're wearing, wrapping his tail around you and licking your face :p (let him love you he means well)
I- Irritation (What is something that irritates them? How do they show their irritation?)
Please PLEASE for the love of god don't play whith his pointy ears. He accepts ANY kind of physical contact except for THIS one. He doesn't like having his ears touched at all. Also, if you try to get him jealous on purpose, he's really not gonna like it.
J- Jackpot (How would they spend their winnings if they won the lottery?)
SHINY OBJECTS. EVERYWHERE.
Also food, a lot of food......... And many gifts for you of course darling~
K- Kryptonite (What is their ultimate weakness?)
LISTEN. No matter how mad, sad or bad he is feeling, if you pet his tail he's going to melt. A purring mess under your touch.
It's a very sensitive part of his body so if you learn all his sweet spots, you can manage to literally relax him in 0.000001 second.
L- Laughter (what makes them laugh?)
A lot of things. It can be from the most random stupid things. He's a giggly rat and just laughs at anything slightly funny. He's such a dork.
His laugh is really adorable though... I'm not gonna speak about his evil laugh because it's freaking terrifying. Aside from that, he snorts, giggles and produces a lot of high pitched noises.
M- Morning (How do they wake up in the morning? Are they a morning person or a morning grouch?)
He wakes up late, both your limbs lazily tangled together, he is clinging onto you, his tail wrapped around tour body. Absolutely REQUIRES smooches and pats to wake up properly. He's the worst morning grouch if he doesn't have his daily cuddles.
N- Needy (when do they feel particularly needy? How do they show it?)
Have I mentioned how needy he is yet? This demon. Is. Always. Needy. He didn't really receive any attention in his life so he craves it all the time. He feels particularly needy when he is tired or lonely. And he shows it by awkwardly walking towards you, burying his face in your neck/hair and just.... Grabbing you. If he gets what he wants his tail will happily wiggle.
O- Oasis (Where is their happy place? Where would they go if they didn’t have anything holding them back?)
He belongs nowhere. Before meeting you, he just wandered wherever he could live. After meeting you, he only wanted to follow you. He will go where you go.
P- Pain (How do they handle pain? How do they handle when you are in pain?)
Physically, he handles pain extremely well, this man is almost immune to death. He knows he will regenerate very quickly if he gets wounded so it's not a big deal. Now emotionally, that's another story. This demon is full on emotions and once you've unlocked the way to his heart, he is exposed to emotional pain, like it or not. He has trouble dealing with his emotions.
If you get wounded, he will take care of everything professionally and not shake at any point, but you can feel how frightened he is inside. Silver Jack is at the edge of tears... Poor guy. If you are in emotional pain, he'll help you by holding your body close to him and ask if you need to talk, or be distracted from it. He is of very good help when it comes to emotions.
Q- Quote (What’s a quote that fits them and your relationship)
I can't choose between :
"I'm the monster that lives under your bed, and you won't get rid of me."
Or
"We can be whatever you want. I can be whoever you want me to be."
R- Reunion (How do they celebrate seeing you after a long time of being apart)
Two takes:
1) A gentle clawed hand rests on your cheek, rubbing your face with the thumb. You look up to the man and smiles, he smiles back. "Hey sweetheart, long time no see..." He hugs you tightly.
2)TACKLING YOU AND HUG YOU UNTIL YOU CAN'T BREATHE. "hOw coULd yoU lEaVE me for thIS LONG?!?" ;A; *sOB*
Won't let go for 3 hours.
S- Stress (What stresses them out? How do deal with stress and how do they relieve it?)
When you're mad or upset, and he doesn't know why. He's very nervous when this happens and doesn't really know what to do. He deals with it by hiding his anxiety as much as possible, and ask for a hug. If you refuse, he'll leave you some space and search comfort/advices from his best friend Scampy. Maybe they'll hang out a little to calm down.
T- Terror (What are they afraid of?)
He is the Boogie Man, he has very few fears. He knows this feeling intimately and sure as hell can control it. He literally plays with fear, he's not even affected by it. However if there's one thing he is afraid of, it's losing you. Also, he's scared of hell, his home.
U- Unique (What is a quirk that is unique to them?)
His own existence itself is unique, i mean, come on ! He's the true, the original, the unique Boogie Man. He has all the powers that accompanies this, he has the personality, the appearance... His whole being is unique by itself. There's no one like Silver Jack, not even remotely similar.
V- Violence (Do they fight a lot? Are they a good fighter? What is their fighting style?)
Well, yes. He is a very good fighter. He had to fight a lot during his long life and has quite the experience. He's a good manipulator too, pretty damn talented to play comedy. He mostly lurks in the shadows, studying his victim... His stalking will join his game of terror before brutally murder the human to feast on their flesh. However, you're is weakness. He would never fight, argue or manipulate you. He wants to show you the real him. Not the blood-thirsty beast.
W- Wow (What do you do that really surprises them? What do you do that they really like?)
As a demon, he knows humans do not consider conventional certain "demon things". So if you start to pick on the different little actions he does and imitates them to give him attention, he'll be delighted. He really likes it when you give him little shiny trinkets, it makes him feel spoiled.
X- (Explicit headcanon. For all you degenerates)
He has.... Certains sensitive spots on his body that turns him on instantly if you play wisely with them. His tail must be the major one, caress it sensually with the tip of your fingers and you'll leave him in a blushing mess.
Also, shape-shifting an becomes handy when it comes to intimate moments :>
Y- Yucky (Is there something that grosses them out so badly that they can’t deal with it?)
Well... It's not 100% in the theme but, he has two very large scars on his back. He had wings before, but someone took them from him. He suffered a lot from trauma, and just the sight of those scars makes him feel sick. He cannot stand feeling or looking at them.
Aside from that, nothing grosses him out to the point of not being able to deal with it. Je has seen a lot.
Z- ZZZ’s (What are their sleeping habits? Both with and without you)
He moves around a lot in his sleep, he always wakes up in the weirdest position you could imagine like he was doing some sort of obscure yoga. He snores lightly and drools a bit like the big dork he is. When you're here, he holds you close and doesn't let go. Good luck if you need to get up.

open letter to bruce springsteen n e street band: Blease make another live album like Live 1975-1985 but make it post reunion tour... the order of the track listing in 75-85 is so essential to the story that the band was telling at the time, but that story of the importance of community and friendship and making a connection never ended! in fact it got richer...fuller...because once you make those connections, how do you keep them? e street embodies that everlasting friendship literally becomes a part of you... u cant fill those voids when theyre gone.
i also think fans, especially younger fans, need that piece of e street history... i cant think of a better time than now for somethin like this... especially since bruce has been flyin solo for awhile (theres nothin wrong w that!) but the story hes told and been telling is not one hes been telling alone... like how “born to run” was once about a song of entrapment and escape, but its now about finding a home... or that when your government fails you, your community, your hometown you can find strength in. change never begins nationally it always starts locally...
while the story in 75-85 is a man whos desperate desire to be in the crowd is equivalent to his want to retreat from it....he still wants to “know if love is real” but by the end of the album he finds the answer: it is (”Jersey Girl”)
to me the story of the e street band after the reunion tour is that, now that we know community is essential for survival, how does it remain strong, balanced, ... and fair? listen to “the rising” “long walk home” and “land of hope and dreams” in that order
anyway maybe i look too deep into all this

❛ Is THAT what you call tact ?  You're as subtle as a  B R I C K  in the small of my back so lets end this call, and this conversation. And is that what you call a   G E T A W A Y  ?  Well, tell me what you got away with. ‘Cause you left the frays from the ties you severed and when you say BEST FRIENDS means  FRIENDS FOREVER .  ❜                                                                                    — Seventy Times 7, 1757 (2013)
yo yo yo, it’s linc comin’ at you with another muse because I am trash and cannot contain myself. This is my pop punk (don’t call his music pop punk to his face tho) baby Phoenix Henry! I have yet to write up his official bio but you can find his about page with some essential facts HERE and I’ll list a summary below!
Nix plays Jeremiah “Shooter” Schuman on Suburbia, so he’s been in acting for about three years now and he adores it. God. Anything involving creating and emotion? Sign him the FUCK. UP.
Once upon a time, two hella rich, hella famous Hollywood film producers had a child named Phoenix, and they just let him chill. He went to school in Burbank, California and a lot of the kids in his classes had parents in a similar position of fame, so there was never anything abnormal about his life. He’d go to class, return home to his mansion, and overall experience childhood just like anyone else -- except with added glitz, glam, and luxury. He discovered from an early age that he adored music.
His parents had gotten him his first guitar and piano when he was four, in an effort to get Nix out of their hair, without realizing that their little ploy would lead to something so much greater. Nix began jamming out with his friends after school when he was ten, and slowly but surely the group of boys evolved to find their sound -- they competed in their first Burbank Battle of the Bands in 8th grade and won over three high school bands, which was a HUGE deal! The pressure was on then -- the group of boys chose their first name, The Switch, and began playing at middle school and high school dances, even landing a gig for the high school senior prom! Nix and his pals did this under their parents’ noses for a while, until they all turned 15 and they’d become “local celebrities” among Burbank’s youth.
Once Nix’s parents caught wind of the band, they ate it up. Mrs. Henry’s response to her son’s talents wasn’t to congratulate him, but rather tell him to work harder, push more -- she placed a call into her friends at Columbia Records and the boys landed a recording deal with one caveat: their name had to go.
Nix came up with their new band name the night before a world history test, when the group of boys’ attempts at a study group capsized. Playful banter and small food fights began (a deviled egg here, a mini hot dog there), but Nix found himself buried in a book of poetry his grandmother had given him for his 15th birthday. The poet? William Blake, one of his all-time favorites. After reading a particularly intriguing piece, Nix looked up, precisely when a small tea sandwich hit him square in the forehead. “1757,” he mused, closing the book. The other boys were silenced and immediately agreed. It wasn’t until later that they realized the name was a result of Nix’s love for poetry -- and the birth date of a one William Blake. In interviews with the band, the boys would tease Nix because of it, but his response would lack no confidence. “If you don’t roll with my boy Billy Blake,” he’d state, eyebrows lifted in defiance, “Then you can’t roll with me.”
So their first record was released in late 2011! And it just   e x p l o d e d   . Within 24 hours they had three songs in the U.S. Top 10 and 6 in the Global Top 50. In 2012, they toured for the very first time, and it only solidified their position at the top of the new punk movement. Suddenly, Nix’s parents took an interest in his life and wanted everything to do with him. They became the band’s managers and pushed the boys to their absolute extremes. Over the next few years, they’d release four singles and three albums -- and any time they weren’t in the studio, they were touring, headlining their own shows and appearing at festivals like Boston Calling, Warped Tour, etc. In 2014, 1757 was one of the Coachella headliners.
Being the frontman of the band, Nix received the majority of fan enthusiasm -- of both the amazing and... creepy variety. Girls plastered his face all over their walls, fans recognized him even when he tried to go incognito. The fame invaded every single aspect of his life. And, unlike other big stars, the boy found it difficult to face it. In interviews, Nix let his bandmates do the majority of the talking. When he was asked about things, he’d offer nuanced, intelligent answers, but other than that he let his bandmates speak. This gave him the reputation of the “broody, sexy one.” Which, alright, could be kind of true, but he didn’t appreciate how everything about him was idealized and perpetuated as some sort of unrealistic romanticization of his character.
Nix became overwhelmed. His fans didn’t notice unless they really squinted but he began to look exasperated in interviews and backstage access videos. “Is it just me or is he getting hotter?!” was featured in a lot of YouTube comments on their music videos, but only Nix’s bandmates knew the truth -- the lifestyle was eating away at his resolve. And his parents pioneering their every move? It got tiring. They started imposing their opinions on Nix’s songwriting, discouraging experimentation, discouraging change.
And then Zenith posted an audition for a new TV show, Suburbia. Nix slinked off to the auditions on a day they were supposed to be recording, and got the call about the role the morning after 1757 debuted one of their new singles on Saturday Night Live. Filming for season one aligned with their recording schedule, so he took on the role after consulting his parents, claiming it would be just a one-season gig. He’d record while filming, and finish just before the band’s summer tour would kick off.
After the first season aired, it became apparent that Suburbia was a hit and his character wasn’t going away. Nix fought to balance his two gigs and managed for a bit, until Zenith reached out and asked if he’d be willing to put in more time for Jeremiah’s role. Music had become a chore. The touring process started to toll him. Shortly after returning from a short Northeastern tour in 2015, Nix’s grandmother passed away -- and that was the last straw, the last thing that he needed to know it was time to quit.
The band understood; they’d all grown tired of how vigorously they’d been working. Some had dreams of going to university, others just simply wanted to live a normal life. So, while Suburbia filmed its second season, they worked on producing their fifth and final album. As the second season aired, 1757 kicked off their final world tour. They broke news of their hiatus in January 2017, and their final tour was extended for three months to accommodate for higher ticket demands. They parted ways victorious, and their fanbase still remains hopeful that a 1757 reunion may be underway in the future.
Nix is well aware he can’t outrun the fame he’s garnered from the band -- he’ll always be Nix Henry, 1757′s dreamboy, but now he feels that he can start anew. While venturing further into his acting career, Nix has begun recording a solo album to be released in late 2017 -- but this project has been kept top secret from most people in order to keep his parents from meddling with the project. Nix still runs his YouTube channel he started for the band, but its focus has become more geared to Q&A’s, vlogs, and snippets of original songs he’s written.
He loves words. (So it’s no surprise that he’s got quite the knack for them.) Often, when he’s not working, Nix can be found with his nose buried in poetry collections and the classics. He’s a prolific writer, often writing poetry double the rate at which he pens lyrics, which is perhaps why 1757 went down in the books as one of the most musically and lyrically nuanced bands of this generation.
You can absolutely expect me to pull songs from All Time Low, Blink-182, Brand New, The All-American Rejects, Sum 41, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, The Wonder Years, Taking Back Sunday, Panic! at the Disco, Yellowcard, etc. and say they’re works of 1757. I like the idea of having tangible songs of theirs, and I’m legit pop-punk trash, so. Yes yes yes. If you ever have any recommendations/thoughts on songs that should be in their repertoire, hit me up! I’m always looking!
Nix is a gentle soul. He’s quite the flirt, but he’s quiet -- if he doesn’t see a reason to say something, he won’t. Music is his outlet and that’s where his emotions and thoughts are channeled. If he’s got an issue, he’s more likely to write a song about it than address it directly. See Seventy Times 7 (lyrics above the cut), a song he wrote about a girl who backstabbed him by cheating on him with one of his bandmates. Another example would be Soco Amaretto Lime (also stolen from Brand New), a song about refusing to grow up. See the lines: I’m gonna stay eighteen forever, so we can stay like this forever. And we’ll never miss a party ‘cause we keep them going constantly. And we’ll never have to listen to anyone about anything. ‘Cause it’s all been done and it’s all been said. We’re the coolest kids and we take what we can get. It’s one of their slower songs, more wistful, a bit melancholic. At the time, he was dating another musician he met at a festival, and his parents didn’t approve, hence the repeated lines of: You’re just jealous ‘cause we’re young and in love; you’re just jealous.
Another example (I promise this is the last Brand New rant I go on, I just love them) is The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot, written pretty shortly after a breakup and -- more notably in his life -- his grandmother’s death. They were close, so his feelings about the situation kind of bled into the song’s original purpose. It was also a disguised letter to his parents following some conversations about toning down the band’s commitments -- It’s cold as a tomb, and it’s dark in your room when I sneak to your bed to pour salt in your wounds. So call it quits or get a grip. You say you wanted a solution, you just wanted to be missed. Call me a safe bet, I’m betting I’m not. Glad that you can forgive, only hoping as time goes, you can forget. He knows he’s a disappointment, he knows he’s letting them down, but this song was written on the cusp of his realization that he really couldn’t do it any longer.
Expect some song posts with lyrics and headcanons or self-paras of his writing process because I’m invested. Wooooooooo.
He’s got tattoos! A lot! And he wants more! Because the world is his canvas, honestly.
Talk to him about words. Tell him your favorite word. He will legitimately be so in love.
Heterosexuality? What’s that? The media’s convinced Nix is some type of ladykiller but he’s just... nope. It makes him laugh.
He has this inherent intensity in his gaze and expression. Like, he could be thinking about rainbows and puppies but fans will be like ‘omfg he’s obviously thinking about the implications of human existence right now’. But like..... also not a lie? He’s quite existential. His lyrics have been known to induce lots of crises, while simultaneously helping people out so it’s like... a huge paradox.
His lyrics are   A B S O L U T E L Y  the ones superimposed onto wilderness photographs on tumblr and reblogged as RP musings. Like, yes. Mhm.
There’s a live acoustic version of the band’s song, You’re So Last Summer (@ Taking Back Sunday, wooo) that brought his fanbase to tears? So yes. That’s kind of the direction his solo album is going in. Words still severe, abrasively true, but... The sound’s less loud and more subtle. Raw.
If I keep going I’m gonna like, put you all to sleep. So! That’s Nix in a nutshell! I want any and all the plots so please feel free to hit me up!! xoxo thanks for reading this long ass post

Top 30 Most Underrated Springsteen Songs: Honorable Mentions
This is a thought I’ve had kicking around in my head for a while and I’ve finally decided, fuck it, I’m gonna do it. As the title says, I’m going to count down my picks for the top 30 most underrated Springsteen songs.
More details + honorable mentions below the cut.
(Clarification: I’m not just picking 30 underrated ones and ranking them good-to-best; I’m gonna try and rate them based on how underrated they are, which means thinking about both how great they are and how much - or little - attention I feel they get. Quantifying how popular a song is is a tricky business, so this list is hardly objective and if you asked me in half a year I’d probably come out with something a little different, but whatever.)
For starters, I’ve decided that I’m only going to include songs that appeared on studio albums - no outtakes. Unreleased songs as well as anything off Tracks, 18 Tracks, the Essential, etc. are all off-limits. I feel like highlighting songs that are tucked away and can’t be found through a normal exploration of his work would be kinda a different project. Like, “Unsatisfied Heart” is heartbreaking - but is it really underrated, or is it just that it’s way, way off the beaten path and hard to accidentally stumble upon? Stuff from Tracks feels the same but to a lesser extent: is “Seaside Bar Song” underrated - ultimately yeah, but I think most Bruce fans who have heard “Seaside Bar Song” (or Be True or Thundercrack or w/e else) like it. So songs that were tucked away as outtakes and never really got a chance are a different arena, I think, than songs that were put out there on an album but still don’t get enough love.
That said, I will be including songs off The Promise. I know it’s technically not a studio album, but when all the songs were written and recorded around the same time, and any touch-ups were done around the same time later on, there’s still a unity to the whole thing. It’s technically a compilation, but like if High Hopes can be a studio album then so can The Promise lol.
So all that out of the way - here are the Honorable Mentions, the songs that didn’t quite make the cut and why:
Mary Queen of Arkansas & The Angel - Very similar reasons for including both of them. I see a lot of fans outright slam these two songs as boring or forgettable, but I don’t even think they’re the weakest tracks on the first album. Ultimately I’m not including them here because I’m not passionate enough about them being particularly good - especially Mary Queen - but compared to all the crap they get, these songs don’t deserve it.
Crush on You - Similar to the above. I think Crush on You is a pretty fun song - great live - with some really fun lyrics, and that’s a lot more complimentary than Bruce would ever be towards it, but I certainly get why people don’t like it and I think this is purely, 100% a matter of personal taste. (Will also add that while many of the River outtakes are better, I think this one fits on the album better. Take ‘Em As They Come is like seven hundred times better than this, but it doesn’t really sound like the rest of The River. Crush on You does.)
Mansion on the Hill - Emotional glimpse into Bruce’s childhood with some really, really effective imagery that’s often overlooked compared to classics like Atlantic City or Johnny 99 on the same album, but since this song was played live so much on the Reunion Tour, I’d say it’s probably pretty well-remembered by now.
All That Heaven Will Allow - Cute song. I don’t think there’s anything to say about it that isn’t evident at face value and I can hardly blame anyone for forgetting it, but I really like it so I want to give it a nod here.
All or Nothin’ at All - One of my Human Touch favorites from the moment I heard it, this is a really fun burst of energy that I’m surprised wasn’t played live more at the time. But it’s objectively very simple and shallow so I think this is another personal preference one like Crush on You, where I can hardly say people who don’t enjoy this song are missing anything.
Better Days/Lucky Town - Two great songs from what’s often Bruce’s most forgotten album, but he’s played them a couple times on this last tour and I’ve seen people get pretty enthusiastic about it, so I think these songs’ followings are a little too large for them to quite be underrated.
Book of Dreams - A really sweet and peaceful song that I think has a meaningful place on the album, ultimately just isn’t strong enough to make the cut.
Livin’ in the Future - Great song off an incredibly underrated album, and I hope it makes its way into a 2017 setlist, because it’s as relevant now as ever. But like Better Days and Lucky Town, I do see people singing its praises every now and then, enough that I don’t think it quite belongs on the list.
Someday (We’ll Be Together) - Big, big fan of this song off The Promise and want to put it on the list, but honestly a lot of why I enjoy it is kind of just... visceral, I don’t know, and I’m not sure I could do this song justice in a post - and while I am including songs off The Promise, I don’t want to include too many because it is a distinct entity. So honestly this song could totally be on the list, I’m just choosing to not include it. And I’ve already expanded the list from 26 to 30 in the course of writing this post lol so I gotta draw the line somewhere. And I guess that line is here.
edit: Changed my mind - nothing from The Promise either. Even if I include it as an album, it objectively isn’t and so it shouldn’t be on the list, it’s still a collection of outtakes and for this particular little project that matters.
With all that out of the way, I’ll try to get #30 posted soon. Probably tomorrow.

The service of the veterans of our country should never be overlooked. No matter what branch of service, whether it was only one tour or a lifetime career’s worth of dedication, our service men and women should be honored and celebrated for their service.
Something that happens more often than you might think is veterans going through their careers, not matter how long or short, accumulating medals and awards and relegating them to a shoe box or a drawer somewhere in the house. This shouldn’t be allowed to happen. The awards and medals that veterans receive should be shown, displayed beautifully for all to see. They have made their country proud and their families even prouder. These recognitions should never go unnoticed.
If you have a loved one who has served in the military, regardless of the branch, and has accumulated medals and awards with no place to show them, consider this Flag And Medal Display Case.
This Flag And Medal Display Case is a very high quality case is designed for a 5’x9 ½’ flag to be displayed in its folded form. It is available in Heirloom Walnut or Cherry finish with beautiful beveled glass and a solid wood back panel.  Below the flag display is the perfect place to display any medals, patches or other hardware that you would like displayed. The glass panel opens and shuts for easy removal of any items and stays securely closed with a hidden magnetic closure.
This case is made entirely in America with the finest construction. How much sense would it make to display your hero’s American medals in a case made anywhere else? The pride you have in your veteran is taken from the same pride that is felt in making this case. It is crafted by hand by people who take a great deal of pride in wanting to give something back to those who have given so much, whether they be active or retired military or even the police and firefighters who serve us in our communities every day.
This Flag And Medal Display Case can also be embossed with or without the Great Seal Of The United States. Either way, the elegance of the display will be the envy of all who see it. Family functions, neighbor visits, Veteran’s Day reunions will all be so much more special when this Flag And Medal Display Case is filled to the brim with the history and stories of what your veteran has done for our great country.
This case will be everything you hope it to be: elegant, beautiful, well crafted and unique. Chapter 31. Move II. Part II. Home
Tumblr media
Alright, where’d we leave off with the last post?
Part I was Japan, our first week after leaving the UK. Part III will conclude with our arrival in Sydney. That means Part II will be the time in between. The awkward middle brother, or Jeff, of this three-part moving post. Included in Part II: Christmas in Dallas, New Year’s in Woodinville, and reunions in Seattle.
Over the past two years, most of my posts have been about our travels around Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and soon-to-add, Australia. That said, I still like to add our trips back home, specifically because I want them to be included when Chelsay converts this blog into a book. I’ve done all the writing and uploading, so she can handle eventually turning this into a NYT’s best seller.
That was a joke (except not, she definitely needs to make this a book). The real reason I want to write about our trips home is the same reason I write about any of our travels: I don’t want to forget.
As I wrote in my wedding post, this blog should be a time machine. 20 years from now, I’ll open the book that Chelsay publishes and place myself back in what will likely be our most adventurous years. Young D’Derek (or whatever weird name Chelsay decides on for our first) will be learning to drive, and Diana (the classic, sensible name I choose for our second) will be taking piano lessons, while Papa Mike heads back to Iceland or Morocco or Jordan or Japan via these posts.
That said, as exciting as our travels to new places have been, some of our favorite memories will undoubtedly come from our returns to the familiar. I’ve written about our first trip home in March 2016 (Chapter 7) and our second trip home that Christmas (Chapter 15), so now, without further ado, here is our third trip home: Christmas 2017.
Oh, one more note first: because there are so many moments I want to remember from this third rendition (and because I’m three months behind in writing about this long move), I’ll structure this post in bullet form.  Okay, now: Christmas 2017.
Highlights from Texas:
Our trip began in Dallas, and as all trips to Dallas begin, we started with Chick-fil-a. It might just be fried chicken and a pickle, but I’d take it over a 18 oz steak any day.

While Chelsay, Liv, and my mom got mani/pedis, my dad, brothers, and I headed to Top Golf. Not even the dumping rain could stop Matt & I’s pin-seeking in our 2-on-2 match up.
The Kerns play a lot of games. Pictionary is always a family favorite, while the meme game seemed slightly inappropriate for this crowd. A few new additions to the game arsenal were Matt’s e-games, where we all come up with funny responses to various prompts, then vote on the best (my mom’s “Shmule” response was an all-timer). One surprise favorite was also one of the simplest: Uno. The unexpected enjoyment actually had nothing to do with the game, but more to do with someone inevitably making a fart joke. (You can tell it was a fart joke in the picture below because my mom is not amused).
Tumblr media
Bocce, and braving the frigid temperatures to complete undoubtedly the worst matches those courts had seen.
Tumblr media
Another Kern family tradition: back-and-forth putt-putt battles between the kids and parents (+ Chelsay).
It doesn’t even matter who won.
It was definitely the kids.
Tumblr media
Christmas cookie making, with some highlights being Matt’s Grinch, Chelsay’s wreath, and Liv’s stocking. Definitely the worst cookie goes to Jeff (”Someone’s in here”).
Tumblr media
Pasta on Christmas Eve. Continuing our tradition of informal Christmas Eve meals (grilled cheese, Italian beef sandwiches, tortilla soup, sloppy joes), the family decided on homemade pasta this year. Chelsay made a phenomenally hearty Bolognese sauce, while the family spun out rolls of al dente linguine.
Tumblr media
The Christmas Day photoshoot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a delicious Christmas beef tenderloin, my mom shared the basics of piano playing with Chelsay, while Matt, my dad, and I took a long, cold, sunset walk down the Trophy Club fairways.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THREE successful Escape Rooms, including a near record-setting win with 24 minutes remaining. Based on our experience, we now get free Escape Rooms for life!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Countless gut-busting meals, including Feedstore ribs, Anamia’s taco salad, Christina’s queso, Mi Cocina sunset fajitas, and i Fratelli thin crust pizza.
Tumblr media
On a sad note, Abby’s memorial, where we followed my dad’s heartfelt but humorous eulogy by saying goodbye to the cutest, strangest, best dog any family could hope for.
Highlights from Seattle:
Playing with Miles. His favorite games: Monster Auntie Chelsay (he got so excited that he pooped), Bucket Flights through the house, and Uncle Mike Express, where I delivered my little passenger to Grandma Helen Station or Papa Sum Pass.
Din Tai Fung & Lucky Strike with Chelsay’s whole family, which included shot-caller Chris destroying the record high score in pop-a-shot.
Tumblr media
Runs around Crystal Lake. Dan & June have been in this house for years, but the setting blows me away every time I see it. I loved going for chilly runs around the lake, quietly taking in the massive trees, charming homes, calm waters, and beautiful surroundings.
Tumblr media
Ringing in New Year’s 2018 with Chelsay’s family, Dev, Babs, Auz, Kels, and our new friend Harvey.
Tumblr media
The second annual virtual golf showdown with Danny. Similar to Chris at Lucky Strike, we set some high scores (high scores are good in golf, right?)
Saturday nights with Auz, Dev, Hanan, Tiin, ALoh, Trav, Ben P, Rob Sooz, and Andy Lit at the 5715 House (aka STZ Pad 3). That house has to be one of my favorite places in the entire world. You can visit the Eiffel Tower or Sahara Desert, but it’s hard to beat watching the NFL playoffs on that shitty couch, bumping all the hits from 2011, embarrassing ourselves with throwback beer pong, or epic 3 AM battles in Hockey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Catch up drinks with Chelsay’s friends, including Officer Nicole, El Gringo (Will), and the Doctors (Matt & Shiva).
Busy season JC meetings w/ Mark Fitz, and the occasional bucket with him & Dev at Bellevue Muni.
Dan and June’s first Escape Room, overcoming some of the hardest puzzles we’d ever faced to escape on their first attempt.
Tumblr media
Chelsay and I’s triumphant one-day return to the city. This was my favorite day in Seattle. Although I had a few trips to the city for nights at the 5715 House, Chelsay and I mostly stayed around her parents’ place  in Woodinville. On the weekend before her flight to Sydney though, we went with her parents on a reunion tour through the city. We ate breakfast at Portage Bay, walked through South Lake Union, took in the Space Needle views from Kerry Park, visited Pike Place Market, returned to Green Lake for cookie cakes, and enjoyed a nightcap tasting to top it all off from Woodinville Whisky. Our January in Seattle was largely about reconnecting with friends and family, but this day was Chelsay and I’s reunion with the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Countless gut-busting meals, including Firenze Amatriciana (possibly my new favorite dish in Seattle), Pink Door Bolognese, La Carta tacos, Great State burgers & crispy crinkle fries, more Chick-fil-a, and of course, Juju’s home cookin’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chibi just trying to sleep through all of this.
Alas, our six week return to the States was just a tease, a brief glimpse into our former lives.
Like this blog, life is a collection of different chapters, and each chapter has its setting. Most of Chelsay and I’s story has taken place in the US, though our past two years were set in London and our next two will be in Australia.
Throughout our story, we understand the importance of remaining present in each chapter. Sometimes it’s fun to reminisce or look ahead, but Chelsay and I always come back to the present and appreciate our current setting while we can.
As I write this, it’s been three weeks since I left the US, so Chelsay and I are well into our new lives in Sydney. The next & final post in this trilogy will show how much we’ve already enjoyed our latest life chapter, but this post is a reminder that nothing can ever replace the love I feel for our story’s first setting: Home.

So. You will all be delighted to learn that I survived my two day meeting. So did my management team so that’s nice. For them. For now … Other momentous achievements in the week, as there have been few I have to be brutally honest, I achieved the ‘Approved’ badge on Netgalley where in one day I doubled my auto approval status from two to four publishers. Go me. exciting times ahead.
Or something.
In more exciting news, for the first time since around Christmas, I received book post. Not one book. Not even two books. Four books! Yes folks, four lovely jubbly books. I am beside myself with excitement. Well I am beside the cat who is lying across my feet as I work on my laptop, but if I rename her ‘Myself with Excitement’ then I am strictly not lying. It is harder to remember than Luna and in all honesty she doesn’t look exactly impressed, but I’m sure with time we’ll both get used to it. It’s more polite than the names I usually call her when she bounces off my head at three in the morning.
But you probably aren’t interested in my domestic arrangements so I’ll tell you about the books instead. First up was a double header from Orenda, two books I am very excited about reading. One was We Were The Salt Of The Sea by Roxanne Bouchard, the second, and this induced a small amount of bounciness to be fair, was Keeper by Johana Gustawsson. I know right? Super happy book blogger over here then. I also received two more books, no less exciting than the first two, in the shape of Evidence of Death by Peter Ritchie and Kate Riordan’s The Stranger, although technically that one is for Mandie who is taking part in the blog tour on behalf of Jen Med’s.
Aren’t they pretty? I’ve concluded that book post is like buses. You wait for weeks then loads come along at once. I am going to assume the bus/bookpost union is going to declare a strike agin now for a few weeks but it was fun while it lasted. Not to be deterred, and because it would be a shame not to use my new found auto-approved statuses, I may have downloaded a few books from the old Netgalley. Purely for blog tours – lets not go mad now.
I found it absolutely necessary to pick up the following treats: Found Drowned by BK Duncan; The Craftsman by Sharon Bolton; The Pact by SE Lynes and The Little Cottage On The Hill by Emma Davies. Blog tours books. Each and every one, I swear.
Depending on your point of view (i.e. whather or not you own Amazon) I’ve been pretty good purchase wise this week. Sort of. Just a few new preorders and books I realised I hadn’t preordered that i should have. You know? The essentials. First up was Blue Night by Simone Buchholz; a Quick Reads title – Clean Break by Tammy Cohen; Killer On The Run and Hidden Agenda by MA Comley; Finders Keepers by KT Finch and White Lies by Lucy Dawson.
A couple of audible purchase may have fell into my shopping basket too. This Is How It Ends by Eva Dolan; The Wicked Cometh by Laura Carlin; The Silent Wife by Kerry Fisher.
Lots of road trips coming up. I need the company. As I was quite bogged down with meetings this week, I’ve been struggling with the reading. Still managed to clear a few, and fluffing good reads they were too. One confused the fluff out of me mind as the central family’s name was Lucas, the character had and Aunt Jenny (Lucas) and her father was Patrick (Pat). Pat happens to have been my mother’s name. Talk about yer deja vu moments …
Books I Have Read
Perfect Death – Helen Fields
There’s no easy way to die…
Unknown to DI Luc Callanach and the newly promoted DCI Ava Turner, a serial killer has Edinburgh firmly in his grip. The killer is taking his victims in the coldest, most calculating way possible – engineering slow and painful deaths by poison, with his victims entirely unaware of the drugs flooding their bloodstream until it’s too late.
But how do you catch a killer who hides in the shadows? A killer whose pleasure comes from watching pain from afar? Faced with their most difficult case yet, Callanach and Turner soon realise they face a seemingly impossible task…
The third book in the Luc Callanach series, I’ll be reviewing this as part of the blog tour this time next week. perhaps slightly slower in pace than the others, or maybe that was just me, it was no less tense nad the risks for Luc and Eva as high as ever. You can order your own copy right here.
The Reunion – Samantha Hayes
They were all there the day your sister went missing. Who is lying? Who is next?
THEN – In charge of her little sister at the beach, Claire allowed Eleanor to walk to the shop alone to buy an ice cream. Placing a coin into her hand, Claire told her to be quick, knowing how much she wanted the freedom.
Eleanor never came back.
NOW – The time has finally come to sell the family farm and Claire is organising a reunion of her dearest friends, the same friends who were present the day her sister went missing.
When another girl disappears, long-buried secrets begin to surface. One of the group hides the darkest secret of them all…
This is it. The book that confused me. Doesn’t take much. Tense and littered with secrets, this book gripped me from the off, taking only a few hours to devour. My review will be published soon but you can preorder your own copy here.
The Collector – Fiona Cummins
Jakey escaped with his life and moved to a new town. His rescue was a miracle but his parents know that the Collector is still out there, watching, waiting . . .
Clara, the girl he left behind, dreams of being found. Her mother is falling apart but she will not give up hope.
The Collector has found an apprentice to take over his family’s legacy.  But he can’t forget the one who got away and the detective who destroyed his dreams.
DS Etta Fitzroy must hunt him down before his obsession destroys them all.
I have been sitting on this book (not literally) since the summer, promising myself I would read it, but thinking I should wait a little closer to publication. I loved Rattle. Could The Collector leave me with the same feeling? Well, you’ll find out very soon when I publish my review but you can order your own copy for Kindle right now. Hardback is out in a couple of weeks and can be ordered here.
Quick Reads: Inspector Chopra and the Million Dollar Motor Car – Vaseem Khan
An enchanting Baby Ganesh Agency short story: a million-dollar car is missing. Chopra has two days to find it, or the gangster who bought it will not be happy.
The Premier No.1 Garage is the place to go in Mumbai if you want a luxury car. Even Mumbai’s biggest gangster shops there – he’s just ordered a classic race car worth millions.
But now the car is gone. Stolen from a locked room, in the middle of the night.
Who stole it? The mechanic who is addicted to gambling? The angry ex-worker? The car thief pulling off one last job?
And how on earth did they make it vanish from the locked garage?
Inspector Chopra has just days to find the culprit – and the missing car – before its gangster owner finds out … and takes violent revenge.
Does exactly what it says on the tin. About an hours worth of a very fun Chopra and Ganesha adventure here which had me chuckling and smiling. If you love the series as I do, you won’t want to miss out so you can orders your own copy here. If you haven’t read any Chopra books, it’s a really goo taster of what you are missing.
Quick Reads: Cut Off – Mark Billingham
Step into a thrilling Quick Read from number one bestselling crime fiction author Mark Billingham. It’s the moment we all fear: losing our phone, leaving us cut off from family and friends. But, for Louise, losing hers in a local café takes her somewhere much darker.
After many hours of panic, Louise is relieved when someone gets in touch offering to return the phone. From then on she is impatient to get back to normal life.
But when they meet on the beach, Louise realises you should be careful what you wish for…
Another quick read title but one which will certainly make you stop and think about how over connected we are to our phones and technology and what happens when you lose it. Do you also lose sight of the danger right in front of your eyes if only viewing the world through the sight on your camera phone? You can order your own copy here.
That was it. Not too much, not too shabby. Probably just right all things considered. I had a pretty full on week on the blog as well, sticking to my resolution of cutting back and posting every day …
Bloody Scotland: Stars of Scottish crime writing to get bloody in Kolkata
Guest Review: Dancing Over The Hill by Cathy Hopkinsths
Review: The Legacy by Yrsa Sigurdardottir
#BlogTour: Little Liar by Clare Boyd
#BlogTour: We Own The Sky by Luke Allnutt
#BlogTour: Black Heart by Anna-Lou Weatherley
#BlogTour: Dark Angel by Helen Durrant
Cover Reveal: Rachel Amphlett – Kay Hunter is back … soon
No so busy week coming up but still managed to shoe-horn in a couple of blog tours with Killed by Thomas Enger on Wednesday, Blue Night by Simone Buchholz on Friday and The Lying Kind by Alison James on Saturday.
This week is a bit mixed. Health and Safety meeting tomorrow morning (boo hiss) followed by the afternoon off and a trip down to London for First Monday Crime (yay!!!!!!). Back to Londinium on Wednesday as I am visiting a unit but otherwise I will be desk bound, no doubt messing with something in excel. I usually am and as month end has been and gone while I was in other meetings, I have quite a bit to catch up on. My life is so glam. Not. Did manage to book tickets for the Orenda Roadshow in Warwick in a couple of weeks though, so not all bad.
Have a fabulous week all. See you on the other side.
Jen
Rewind, recap: Weekly update w/e 04/02/18 So. You will all be delighted to learn that I survived my two day meeting. So did my management team so that's nice.

Favorite Podcasts 2016
I have a data entry job in a lab processing bodily fluids. I hate the monotonous job, but one perk of the job is I get to listen to podcasts 40 hours/week,  time flies by, and I feel somewhat productive.
PERSONAL OPINIONS… -podcasts are best done between 2 people, preferably comedian friends. Sometimes, there can be too many cooks in the kitchen (Filmdrunk Frotcast, for instance, runs into this) -it’s usually best in person: you can sense that in some podcasts where they do it via Skype or on the phone -I avoid local sports talk radio like the plague—so you don’t get blowhards with hot takes/talking points where they have to have controversy to get ratings. Generally, everybody on podcasts gets along, it’s natural, funnier, and doesn’t fill hours. -while I don’t think some of these podcast comedians will ever become household names, they are doing some of the best work out there that’s ever been done comedically. It’s like Howard Stern and what Chris Rock said and I’m going to fuck this up: he might be the funniest person of all time if you compile what he did into a single hour. I feel like you could do these with a LOT of people. But they never will. -you listen long enough, it should feel like a friendship you are a part of. You know the people, get the inside jokes, and enjoy the banter. -best episodes tend to run 60 minutes or less—otherwise, it can get real bloated.
BEST EPISODES -End of World Election Night (Joe Rogan)—Bill Burr steals the live show from Stanhope, Rogan, Kreischer, etc—tour de force that came out the night of the Election while shit was going down. Burr is going for pure humor and some guests come on who have an issue with how he views things in a blunt, fair way where everything gets shit on and everything sucks: but, at the end of the day, his life is not going to be ruined. What I like about Burr is this: he will say awful things that you don’t agree with...but by the end you are on his side and laughing with him. -600 Dollar Podcast-‘Voyeur Motel’—Halpern reads out Gay Talese’s story of a guy who ran a hotel and had a secret viewing station set up above every guest’s bed and he would watch people have sex. It’s creepy, but here? Funny as hell. The ‘Back to the Future’ joke Halpern quickly gives almost made me crash on the Mass. Pike -Dollop/My Favorite Murder crossover-‘Otto in the Attic’ -Dollop does a murder w/ My Favorite Murder as guests. It is wild. -Dollop-‘Bundy 2: Oregon Takeover’ –one of the first Dollops was about Cliven Bundy, the anti-government rancher. This time, his kids took over Oregon—and, most recently, they went unpunished despite a takeover with guns. Just unreal. -Pardon My Take-‘Cat Killer Michael Rappaport’ (first part interview goes for 15 minutes or so) -Justin Halpern’s Papa Roach story on Frotcast—I was in tears at work listening to this. It helps to have been of age when Papa Roach was a thing in the late 90′s/early 2000s (Filmdrunk Frotcast; 3:30 mark on the ‘Best of 2016’: 90 second story basically)
BILL BURR’s Monday Morning Podcast (funniest comic alive mostly does a 1-man rant by himself) 2 episodes a week—1 of which is half throwback episodes
I don’t get how Burr does it: it should be impossible for Burr to carry a podcast each week by himself for an hour, but he does. He rambles for an hour, takes listener e-mail. He is THE only person I listen to advertisement readings for: he somehow makes that funny, shits on the ads who sometime remove them. But it’s like listening to a guy workshop some material and improve himself in small ways as a comic.
I will say this though: when somebody else enters the podcast, it becomes funnier. His wife, Nia. He can play ball with and you can sense him having an audience and naturally be funnier. 600 Dollar Podcast: a comedy podcast between 3 comedians/writers who talk about marriage & raising kids—but it’s totally not that at all and always goes AWOL 1 episode per week—but hasn’t been one in months Horrible title for a show—started off as ‘Wild’n’Out Without Nick Cannon’ but they got a cease and desist from Cannon’s lawyer.
Justin Halpern (Shit My Dad Says), Tommy Jonaghan (breakout guy of the show and a stand-up) and Patrick Monaghan (another TV writer)
This podcast has come the closest since Walking the Room to genuinely making me laugh out loud each week. Consistently. Great and funny stories of failure. Fucked up in the best way and goes FAR down the rabbit hole of topics.
BEST EPISODES…. #7-‘Voyeur Motel’ (Halpern’s Back to the Future joke) #11-‘It’s Called a Vagina’ (when Halpern loses his shit at the 10:15 mark) Dollop (two comedians: American history read to a friend who has no idea what the topic is about. Point is, you realize America has NEVER been great and it’s supremely and endlessly fucked up) Walking the Room is my favorite podcast ever. Laugh-out loud funny friendship and THE best and funniest take on unending failure and, like Patton Oswalt said, being a shit-magnet for people/things. They do live reunion ones once a year—and they generally suck and aren’t the same but I’ll take what I can get. Anyways, that podcast is over—and the Dollop, a history, took over as Dave Anthony’s main thing (He’ll do conversations with Wil Anderson on TOFOP/FOFOP that are fun and closest to Walking the Room, but it’s not the same: he’s much more relaxed/normal whereas Dave was putting on a face as someone who hated his goofy friend, Greg, part of the time and was angrier than he was—and if you follow him on Twitter, he is comically angry and outspoken)
Sometimes, the Dollop can be hit-or-miss and I tune out a bit. Within first couple minutes, I can tell if it’s going to be amazing. Gareth can improv too much at times—but when it’s on, it’s on. They’re incredibly quick and it never tires how incredulous Gareth can get to the stories to Dave’s sarcastic, nonchalant storytelling while EVERYTHING that is happening is fucked up.
I think if they could make a lot of these Dollops into movies, they would be amazing. Some Mel Brooks-ian shit. I would rather see the Dollop’s version of Hugh Glass than Leonardo DiCaprio’s version in ‘the Revenant’. The show got a nod of the head in the ‘Tickled’ documentary.
But my jaw drops at American history I didn’t know about—or to its extent—and then laugh hard. Some of it is minimal characters/events that are just funny—others are wildly serious or show parallels to today.
BEST EPISODES… -‘Otto in the Attic’ (crossover live w/ My Favorite Murder) -‘Bundy 2: Oregon Takeover’ (anything involving Cliven Bundy’s family and their anti-government militia) -Black Panther Fred Hampton’ (not a funny one—but a guy I never heard of who should have been up there with MLK/Malcolm X had he not been assassinated by the FBI/American government) -‘Girl Watchers’ -‘Domino’s Pizza Story’ -‘Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo’ (pre-Trump guy) -‘Boston Busing ’74 & ’75 PT 1 & 2’
All-Time? ‘the Rube’ is the best in a runaway or me. ‘Purity Ring’, Tickled, Hugh Glass, some of the earlier ones are great.
IF YOU LIKE THIS: history’; Drunk History comedy…My Favorite Murder My Favorite Murder (true crime—one comic and her affable friend read 1 true crime murder to each other) 1 episode per week; 90 minutes-ish
True crime is all the rage—so it makes sense as to why this podcast has become insanely popular. It might be easy to shit on, in a morbid way, to go over murders in a ‘fan’ way: but it’s the same way movies/TV shows/news each night centers around murders. The show might glorify people—but there’s a common bent/theme around certain killers and their upbringings—or possible life-saving life mottos (‘fuck politeness’). I can see the show doing more positive things, giving $ to rape kits being tested (how the fuck was that NOT a thing?!?!)
I was aware of Karen Kilgarif because Dave Anthony dated her and she was a guest on Walking the Room. But it’s AMAZING when people you are vaguely aware of find their own avenue. And become stars in their own right—and people you look forward to hearing each week.
Her friend, Georgina, is just as easily likable. DEFINITELY comes across like a gossiping girly-girl (I heard that criticism), but she’s so damn cool, genuinely funny, and cute (even before I saw how pretty she was—there’s no way to describe it and you can sense it with how Karen adores/views her). It could be a really dour show OR droning in the wrong hands, but they make the topic rightfully serious but fun simultaneously in the best way. It is respectful to the victims.
But yeah, they read Wikipedia entries to each other and bring in a heavily-informed obsession to the podcast. But it’s the humor and chemistry that helps saves the show in tone. It’s not as heavily-researched as the Dollop or formatted in a natural storytelling bent, but it’s successful.
KEY EPISODES…. -Live from LA Podfest (crossover with Dave Anthony of the Dollop) -Chicago Podfest (changing point for the show: you realize that they are massive in this episode in ways they didn’t expect—with a rabid fanbase) IF YOU LIKE THIS: you’ll like the Dollop
PARDON MY TAKE (sports podcasts) 3 episodes per week; 60 minutes each I want to slap myself in the face listening to this—because these are the two best young, likable stars in comedy/sports. IT IS HARD TO DO SPORTS COMEDY DONE SUCCESSFULLY BECAUSE PEOPLE TAKE IT TO SERIOUSLY! Big Cat comes across like Jimmy Kimmel; PFTCommenter, however, steals the show—and he’s incomparable (maybe Stephen Colbert for being able to stay in character?): basically he’s born out of ‘hot-take’ culture and mocking it. There’s a format to the show, some interviews, segments.
Yes, it’s part of the Barstool Sports empire—run by douchebags (a friend of mine is cousins with Portnoy—tried getting an autograph for her boyfriend who loved Barstool Sports, he refused), but forget that.
LAUGH OUT LOUD… -Stingray Steve calls the fall of the Berlin Wall (a southern college football fan—they get him to announce each week’s big plays; when they FINALLY get him to call a key moment in history, I lost my shit at work) -Jimbo of the Week (mailbag fails from readers) -Monday Mornings after NFL games where they mimic Chris Berman’s recaps of the games
BEST EPISODE… -Catkiller Michael Rapaport (Rapaport is an actor/personality easy to shit on—but he comes across great as a podcast guest on Bill Simmons, Bill Burr, Pardon My Take: he’s game)—September 6th -Marlins Man/Foul Ball Fan (July 6th) -Martin Shkreli –when they shit on him; it’s interesting to hear them be affable/likable/funny with people they clearly hate. Marlins Man & this episode are pretty great interviews to hear how naturally funny they are, easy to get along with, even while still getting jokes in at people they hate. It’s not easy.
TOFOP & FOFOP (Australian comedian and funny actor friend poke at mostly American pop culture) -Charlie Clausen is the co-host on TOFOP -FOFOP gets its name from the show ‘Fringe’: it’s ‘Faux-TOFOP’, typically with American comedians. Dave Anthony is the best guest for FOFOP.
Wil Anderson is an Australian comic—he’s ridiculously affable, charming, and naturally funny. This is my closest substitute for Walking the Room, in a way, with its chemistry between two comics. It doesn’t come close, but that’s fine. I don’t get all the Australian references (rugby, pop culture, politics), but I don’t need to as an American—because America dominates just about every episode.
Clausen, on TOFOP, is damn likable. I can’t say enough about how naturally great Anderson/Clausen are on podcasts. It’s not just the accents that do it.
BEST EPISODES… -#263-‘Should I Go Home?’ : post-election w/ Dave Anthony I don’t think that’s right, but I’ve laughed out loud with pop culture breakdowns like Game of Thrones, Westworld, or shitting on Zach Snyder Batman/Superman movies in the funniest way I’ve heard (miles funnier than Filmdrunk-but no real format to the show) Inactives: NFL talk, fantasy football…and some parenting
In a just world, Matt Ufford should be a mammoth sports media star alongside Katie Nolan. He’s likable, outspoken, funny—plus he’s a military veteran/Captain in the Iraq War (though he does not come across as that).
So yeah, an NFL podcast with Ufford (Seahawks fan) and Nick Stevens (Pats/Star Wars fan and stand-up comedian). Stevens should be easy to hate as a stereotype of a Boston sports fan—but he’s naturally funny and likable, quick with jokes/takes on a spot.
The first episodes of 2015 are great for Matt’s all-time depressing Wal-Mart riff and Stevens’ reaction or Stevens bringing up the Butt Fumble that made me cry laughing—and Ufford lost his shit.
Also, I’ve NEVER done fantasy sports, but I still enjoy the show—most NFL show (NFL Ringer; Simmons; Barnwell) aren’t funny, have chemistry, and maybe too nerdy—this is wildly funny, enjoyable.
YOU’LL LIKE THIS: football, comedy, Star Wars
Filmdrunk Frotcast: Pop Culture, Movies, Comedy As I said, sometimes this show can have too many cooks in the kitchen. There can be 4-6 people on the show sometimes—some of whom aren’t funny or interesting like Laremy, Lindy West. Matt Lieb grew on me heavily. I found him unfunny and someone who comes across as funnier than they think and the other people on the show let him do his thing, don’t cut him off, laugh too hard, or know what to do. But he’s become a centerpiece of the show and now I don’t mind it. I dig Brendan, Joe Sincilito, and some other dude that’s been on more of late But Lieb does not really have an equal comedically to play with him, so he feels very much like an excited dog who just wants to play but could use another dog to play with. Horrible analogy, but feels right.
The show—and Uproxx, in general—hits on topics I am VERY familiar with and want to hear discussed. I hardly tend to agree with Vince Mancini’s tastes and sometimes opinions—he’s more of a critic than a comic. Lieb mostly looks for pure comedic bents and can derail the podcast, in a good way.
KEY GUESTS: Justin Halpern, PFTCommenter, Matt Ufford, Joe Sincilito SONG: Matt Lieb’s ‘Corporate Birthday’
BEST EPISODE: ‘Best of 2016’ (as an entry point, it does a good job capturing what the show does—love it or leave it. So lots of Lieb improv and made-up songs on the spot inbetween conversations)
REVISIONIST HISTORY: MALCOLM GLADWELL 10 episodes total (on hiatus)
Heavily organized and produced. I avoid boring This American Life podcasts like the plague, but Gladwell does that a bit—but better here. It’s interesting.
Best episodes: ‘Satire Paradox’; ‘Lady Vanishes’..the 3-part college episodes is an obsession and interesting political/social axe that Gladwell has to grind.
RECOMMENDED: if you like Malcolm Gladwell’s books even a little—this is otherworldly as an investigative podcast piece. It should NOT be this damn good. BILL SIMMONS (mostly sports) 2 episodes/week; 60-80 minutes each He gets shit on fairly—and sometimes over-the-top unfairly. He has a tired schtick and thoughts, a HORRIBLE voice (the opening segments on his TV show were due to be a disaster), unfunny. I don’t know how to say it: someone like Justin Halpern has a HORRIBLE voice—but he transcends that because he’s so goddamn funny. With that said, he’s talented, inspired/broke the door open for a lot of people, is a good podcast host, easy/affable enough to listen to, and has good taste. I don’t think his friends are funny or worthwhile  (House; Cousin Sal) but I enjoy Jack-O. Mike Lombardi is painfully bad—but I have to sit through it as a die-hard Pats fan since he was in the Pats organization until just a couple months ago. But he gets damn good guests every now and then.
BEST GUESTS/EPISODES: Michael Rapaport, Gladwell, Wesley Morris, Al Michaels, Robert Smigel, Jay Glazer; Key & Peele, Chris Sacca, etc, etc COMMON SENSE w/ DAN CARLIN (a historian rants about politics in a focused way) Carlin is like Burr—he does a podcast by himself for an hour and rambles a bit. Difference is, there is not a single funny bone to Carlin’s body. I agree with Filmdrunk: Carlin comes across like a Right Wing radio host in how he talks—but he’s utterly brilliant. He’s the best guy to break down history in today’s terms. I subscribe more to his thinking as a leftist political-minded person.
I still need to check out ‘Hardcore History’: I hear that’s the shit, but I don’t have time for 12-16 hour anthology pieces. I started listening to ‘Wrath of Khan’ and it’s insane, thorough, well-researched and great storytelling. It’s daunting though.
RECOMMENDED: History/political buffs—with leftist-minded thinking and rambling HOUND TALL: Educational live comedy show where an expert  talks about something and comics engage in it in a panel Basically, an expert comes in (a pimp; a woman who was in a harem; Science; Religion; etc) and a panel of comedians riff on that in a loose way. Moshe is brilliant as a host and he has good comedic guests (Pete Holmes; Joe DeRosa; John Mulaney; Natasha Legerro, etc)
SUGGEST IF YOU LIKE: education, in a weird way HANNIBAL BURRESS: HANDSOME RAMBLER Podcast is in early stages. Mainly it’s just Hannibal and his DJ chilling while Hannibal fucks around with autotune at times. He’s been having more conversations with guests lately (Chance the Rapper, for one)
Episode 2—Hannibal’s experience with Air B’n’B’s JOE ROGAN 3 episodes per week—3-4 hours each The podcast simply goes on for FAR too long (3-4 hours) and the topics meander far down the rabbit hole. But, if you’re like me and have the time, you don’t mind having to listen to a 3-4 hour conversation.
Rogan is a far-out dude, gets shit on for his opinions, lifestyle (Hunting & MMA most likely), and politically correct people (it’s overblown). But he’s an open and fair-minded dude, even if I don’t agree with him.
He’s kind of similar to Pete Holmes: long conversations, deep person—except Pete’s is maybe more focused with questions that come up in every podcast (it’s a funnier version of WTF with Marc Maron) and Holmes is just plain goofier and naturally funny. Rogan is mostly an intense dude—who has more life experience, hobbies, and skills.
BEST EPISODE: End of the World election night podcast Bill Burr steals the show from everybody, including Doug Stanhope. It’s unreal.
OTHER GUESTS: Bill Burr, Dan Carlin, Hannibal Burress, Neal Brennan
Pete Holmes: You Made it Weird (funnier, goofier, deeper Marc Maron conversations) Burr is the funniest comic alive—but Pete is probably the most insanely likable; they both should be massive. Burr does the best panel work on a night show: he’s an angry, loveable, opinionated dude, pushes buttons in a playful way. Holmes is a DEEP-thinking guy—who just is universally likable. Even his face, it’s goofy and instantly funny.
BEST GUESTS… Moshe Kasher (recent); Garry Shandling (month before he died)
SUGGEST IF YOU LIKE THIS: WTF w/ Marc Maron—if Maron was funny/looser/goofier in his interviews
WTF W/ Marc Maron Hardly interviews comics anymore since he’s nearly interviewed them all. I don’t bother to check out as much. He hasn’t had as much good interviews this year. I’ve seen him live, I think, 6 times (and 2 podcast tapings that were in Boston: first one was the best by far)
But reason why his podcast is great is that Marc isn’t a whole person, he’s finding himself—and you can sense he’s trying to make himself better and find himself with the people he’s interviewing. He’s looking for grace, understanding, and just being a better person.
Also, everybody skips the openings to all his podcasts—and just cut to the interview.
BEST INTERVIEWS… Robert Kelly (underrated: might be one of the funniest people I’ve seen live—his own podcast has great moments: him w/ Burr, DeRosa, Kreischer on Bertcast was amazing) Louis CK; Jeff Goldblum
CHAPO TRAP HOUSE Caught this only in the last week.
The Ben Shapiro takedown in the last episode of the year was great (they read passages from his awful book of the extreme conservative writer. Helps to know who he is in a way)
SUGGESTED EPISODE… -Post-Election breakdown ‘We Live in the Zone Now’: My thoughts exactly as a lefty on the election & state of politics
OPIE RADIO Anytime they release a Patrice O’Neal, Bill Burr, Louis CK, or Robert Kelly oldies, it’s special. Some of the most brutal and funny comedy ever was done on Opie & Anthony. A show as PACKED with people as, say, Filmdrunk Frotcast could use is actual comedians who are mostly all on the same level ‘funny’ as each other. Except the main thing with this show is that they bust balls in the cruelest way. Endlessly. With that said, you can easily hate the fans of the show and hate Anthony Cumia’s politics and how far-right/distant he has become (got fired from the show)—and still recognize how brilliant he was as a host. There’s a treasure trove of amazing material on Opie that you can put up with the best comedy ever. It’s the original podcast and when they re-release old shit, it’s a goldmine.
-We’ll See You in Hell w/ Joe Derosa (2 friends talk movies and shit on each other for liking or not liking certain movies: it’s Roger & Ebert basically) Derosa has a mostly HORRIBLE taste in movies.
I don’t think I could recommend this podcast to anybody unless you’ve heard him on a podcast with Pete Holmes, Bill Burr, Hound Tall, or Opie. Pete Holmes would 100% be the best (Pete’s podcast to hear Pete’s impression of Joe, Hound Tall) and Burr would be great to see how easily Burr shits on him. Otherwise, you’d just view him as an unlikable asshole.
Derosa has a couple albums out and they’re worthwhile. But there is one that he recorded that went AWOL and the crowd absolutely was drunk and derailed his special, so Joe went with, trashed his special, and just went off on the audience trashing them. It’s amazing. It’s “You Will Die” and it’s the second part of the special that was recorded and meant to be the special.
COULD GIVE UP ON AND BE COOL -Bill Barnwell (NFL podcast) -NFL Ringer -the Watch (TV/movies)
Only because I’m a big football/TV/movie fan—the hosts aren’t very good, funny, interesting or standout. I think they are good, straight-forward writers though (all formerly of Grantland). I listen to these episodes at 2x speed to make them go by faster. OVERRATED PODCASTS -Keeping It 1600 Politics podcasts from people who worked for Obama as policy advisor & speechwriter. They get insider guests/journalists. Sure, it’s mildly interesting to hear them go over current events—but it’s ultimately forgettable. Kind of smug. Jokes aren’t funny. They are inoffensive dudes and centrists. It’s a podcast for water-carrying establishment Democrats generally and I think they are blind to see at how limp and ineffectual their party is and why that is so. I guess the podcast that came after the election is interesting to listen to—and how shocked they were. They never thought it would happen—and they never thought Hillary was a horrible candidate.
I’d say the Ringer podcasts (the Watch; Simmons) the people who host the podcasts are NOT funny people at all. There’s laughter going on, but it’s never made by funny people. I like Simmons, but I can’t defend him being naturally funny the way he would like to be.
SUGGESTION: listen to Wil Anderson, an Australian comic, alongside Dave Anthony cover politics on FOFOP. I started listening to Chapo Trap House-that’s better than Keeping it 1600 and what I wanted in a politics podcast MOST DISAPPOINTING PODCASTS -Serial season 2—checked out after a couple episodes. It tried something new and failed miserably. -Deadcast –Drew Magary is the funniest online writer for a decade now, but he comes across as obnoxious and loud on podcasts. Tim Marchman? A boring contrarian killjoy. They go over topics I enjoy hearing about though, but I gave up. Also, they do it via Skype, so it misses some chemistry of podcasts that do it in person.
DON’T LISTEN TO ENOUGH BUT THINK ARE GOOD -Chelsea Peretti (Bill Burr episode is great—but that podcast has like 3 episodes a year) -Guys We Fucked -My Brother My Brother & Me (3 brothers, comedy—and I heard their Dungeons & Dragons podcast Adventure Zone is great—but I’m not into that game) -Sklarbro Country (Sports + comedy) -Todd Glass (Patton Oswalt as a guest was amazing a year or so ago)
PODCASTS I PLAN ON CHECKING OUT MORE IN 2017 -Chapo’s Trap House -Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History

They have made their country proud and their families even prouder. These recognitions should never go unnoticed.

If you desire, you can select a service specific brass medallion or an etched specialty colored medallion for an additional fee. This is the case you’ve been looking for. Take the medals out of that shoebox and display them proudly.
