SW Fic - Observe, Analyze, Adapt

Six snapshots from Artoo Detoo's memory files tagged Skywalker.

[AN] For @strrne (I know this is your art blog but tumblr won’t let me tag your main) from this post. I dug this up from one of the abandoned concepts which started from @celebrate-the-clone-wars prompt Evolve and Adapt. It's too late to submit but I thought I'd credit the prompt anyway.

Artoo Deetoo was a proud astromech droid, manufactured by the best to serve the Royal House of Naboo. He might be relatively fresh out of the factory, but he had more experience than most droids with similar activation time. He had fixed the Naboo Royal Starship mid-flight several times now, once even in the middle of a firefight. And this was not the first time aiding star pilots either, though actual battles had been rare, and an over-enthusiastic nine-year-old pilot was rarer.

He had not worried at the beginning. Partly this was because astromech droids were not programmed to worry and partly because at the beginning it was well within his function to help Naboo army in destroying those battle droids. It was also within his function to help a pilot—a small one, but still a pilot—in the battle for Naboo. And when the ship's programmed autopilot became too cumbersome, it was protocol to turn it off and give the pilot full control.

That was when Artoo learned that some pilots were... more different than others.

This little human flew the fighter like a pod. It was erratic enough to introduce multiple glitches in Artoo's clean system. They resulted in a series of queries that Artoo had never needed to ask before, such as whether this experience could be classified as 'flying', or since when 'babysitting' had become part of his programmed functions, or if there would be anything left of him to salvage after this.

The tiny pilot was just ecstatic, blithely unaware of how many common rules of space combat and laws of physics they were breaking.

"I'll try spinning, that's a good trick!"

It was all Artoo could do to keep the star fighter stabilized and cling on with dear life—metaphorically speaking.

By the end of the day, Artoo had a new entry for the word 'spin' in his database with a footnote, discovered the emotion 'panic', and an appropriate sound file to express it.

"Alright, Artoo, we can do this. Just stay with me."

This was not a Nubian Fighter, and that little human had somehow become a Jedi, and his flight pattern had not changed at all in ten years.

Of course, this time Artoo also had ten years worth of experience serving Padme Amidala right next to her. Padme Amidala did not believe in memory wiping droids, so Artoo had been able to retain nearly everything he had learned, one of which was something that could be described as a certain appreciation for excitement. He had gotten through that battle that started this war, weaving through the chaos to keep two humans and one golden protocol droid in one piece without ever needing to use his 'scream' file.

"Redirect all power for shields to the engines," Anakin said, canting a look behind them where two vulture droids were trailing. The sight seemed to cheer him up. "Let's see what they've got."

Artoo had predicted that order. Only the most reckless of pilots sacrificed shields for other functions, and Anakin Skywalker was certainly one of those.

And for good reason. Within the next ten seconds, both droids were little more than smoking scrap metal.

"Anakin, will you stop showing off and help me out here!"

Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice crackled through the comms.

Anakin rolled his eyes, steadying the ship from its 1980-degree spinning. Everything was upside down. "Alright, old man, where are you?"

"I'm near the—"

The comm cut off from interference and Anakin's expression turned serious at once. Artoo performed a quick scan and marked Obi-Wan's direction on the screen.

"I see you." Anakin muttered in a voice that promised pain and suffering as he pulled the fighter around.

Obi-Wan's ship, which could now easily be identified by the vulture droids swarming around it, took a dive and vanished from their view behind one of the Separatist dreadnoughts. As they flew towards it however, another one of Separatist ships loomed overhead, having taken heavy damage from the Resolute and now careening down.

Artoo calculated, and presented an alternative course that would take 1.27 seconds longer but did not involve going between two heavy metal bulks that were about to collide.

Unsurprisingly, Anakin ignored it and fired the engines to max instead.

Artoo did not scream when they zipped through the narrow gap and Anakin started to defy physics again.

Artoo did not scream when the two dreadnoughts crashed and one exploded just behind them.

Artoo did not scream when they shot out the other side and flew straight into the swarm of vulture droids, sending them all scattering to different directions like bowling pins.

Then a debris from the explosion slammed into their left wing and they spun out of control.

And Artoo screamed.

Organic living beings all had to meet certain requirements to function, and Artoo had been active long enough to learn that their needs varied. Padme Amidala, for example, often needed to be watched over in case of intruders or alerted to some important appointment.

Anakin Skywalker, as Artoo found out quickly, required a slightly different type of care, and the trickiest part was he never asked for it.

"Bearings. Magnetic ones."

Artoo dropped the component into Anakin's outstretched hand, and followed it with a query, this time waving a ration bar. The bar was, in his opinion, a much more efficient form of food and made it easier to convince humans who were not hardcoded to eat when they needed.

Anakin glanced at the bar and shook his head, returning to his work. "Not now, I'm good."

Anakin's stomach however, chose that exact moment to disagree loudly. He scowled down, as if ready to have an argument with his own body parts.

Artoo bumped against him, waving the bar again and adding an appropriately sad bleep that had proven effective in manipulating human emotions.

It worked. Anakin sighed and tore off his dirty gloves. "Fine."

As Anakin wolfed down the ration, Artoo made adjustments to his algorithm for predicting Anakin Skywalker's biological clock.

And added 'babysitting' into his list of official duties.

The last thing Artoo learned from Anakin Skywalker was that humans, apparently, were susceptible to reprogramming as well.

As a droid, Artoo did not understand plenty of organic concepts, but he could damn well analyze patterns. And the human who returned after leaving with the command, 'stay with the ship', did not match the behavioral patterns of Anakin Skywalker.

Anakin Skywalker would never hurt Padme Amidala.

Anakin Skywalker would never fight Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Anakin Skywalker would never leave Artoo behind.

Artoo analyzed, and filed the results. They were later archived into the deepest part of his database along with all the flight and mission data from the Clone Wars.

Artoo did not access that data for a long time after. He was usually stationed on Tantive IV or Alderaan Royal Palace, which required different skills. Occasionally he would be ordered to assist a star pilot on a fighter, but working with people who acted more like droids to him was not quite the same.

Until...

"This R2 unit of yours seems a little beat up. You want a new one?"

Luke Skywalker laughed and shook his head. "Not on your life! That little droid and I have been through a lot together. You okay, Artoo?"

Artoo confirmed. The old memory files returned easily.

It was their first time flying a star fighter together, and this was a different era, a different type of fighter. Still, as soon as he was plugged into the X-Wing, Artoo dug back up the flight pattern analysis from the oldest, most secured part of his database.

Because when it came to living beings, some things just did not change.

@synthzander made a super cool post answering questions abt her OCs and I got inspired to do it myself too!! I’m doing it for my five current faves. this is taken from @the-moon-dust-writings‘s post here!

-OC’s full name? Nix: Phoenix Eleanor Nova Rex: Bartholomew Alexander Achernar Orion: Orion Vela Io: Io Justine Pleione Ceres: Ceres Altair (Orion and Ceres don’t have middle names bc Orion picked his own name and didn’t want one and Ceres just straightup doesn’t care)

- Where were they born? Nix: Greece Rex: Scotland Orion: uhh I’m not 100% exactly sure yet but somewhere in South Asia Io: idk man Ceres: Rwanda i think!

- What accent and language do they speak in? Nix: kinda a mix between English and Greek accents, speaks English, Greek, and a bit of French Rex: Scottish accent, only speaks English Orion: his accent and first language depend on where exactly he was born so i need to figure that out, but other than that he speaks English, Spanish, and French fluently, and many many other languages less so. Io: Io doesn’t “”speak”” but they can only use English Ceres: his first language is Kinyarwanda, altho he hasn’t had the opportunity to speak it for years. And he’s close to fluent in English!

- What flaws do they have? Nix: g od where do i even begin w this question. she’s manipulative and can be cruel. she wants her own way and she wants it now and she’s not afraid to go to great lengths to get it Rex: mm Rex isn’t developed enough to have significant flaws yet, but he has major attachment issues and tends to be lazy Orion: my boy is perfect wym he avoids all his problems and will always take the easy route rather than helping anybody out, also keeps a lot of knowledge of other people that would be better shared w certain others Ceres: Ceres is a difficult one tbh, but he doesn’t have any interest whatsoever in helping anybody who isn’t himself or very close friends, and doesn’t care if he hurts other people Io: Io,, also is difficult? they make things harder for other people but that’s not their fault. yea idk Io is developed enough either

- What are things that they are good at? Nix: she’s very good at social situations and cheering people up! she’s also good at painting, photography, cooking, and is a talented engineer (she smart) Rex: video games his one true love.....he’s also a talented socialiser and good to have around in stressful situations bc he’s calm and level headed, AND he knows how to survive in the wilderness. Orion: music!! he’s a v talented musucian and singer. other than that he’s rly intelligent and can memorise almost anything - which includes the entire high school musical script. also he somehow makes friends super easily without realising how Ceres: his academic strong point is most definitely history. other than that he has a quiet way of being comforting? he notices the people he’s close to and is good at figuring them out without asking. he’s also REALLY good w animals Io: Io is pretty damn brilliant at building robots!! and they’re curious and are good at researching things they find interesting

- What are their pet peeves? Nix: ppl not taking things seriously when they should, rly loud music, ppl who don’t research before talking (basically her pet peeves are everything abt her younger self lmao) Rex: not listening when he’s trying to talk, disrespecting others’ interests, sore losers Orion: talking over him, being the punchline, being unwilling to change little things for him, chewing w ur mouth open Ceres: he only has one!: every single person on the entire earth Io: not even bothering to try and understand their way of communicating, putting salt on things

- What is something they do not respect? Nix: ppl who talk down on her friends Rex: biting straight into the kitkat Orion: ppl who needlessly state their negative opinion Ceres: ppl who are mean to spiders Io: spiders

- Could they survive on their own in a forest? Nix: maybe?? as long as it wasn’t for too long Rex: yea Orion: quite possibly? he might have the knowledge but idk if he could put it into practise Ceres: fairly sure he could Io: no

- Are they social with others? Nix: very!! Rex: yes Orion: a lot of the time! Ceres: no Io: yea

- Do they have good social skills? Nix: yes Rex: yes Orion: ..sorta? Ceres: hell no Io: mm not really

- What is their deepest darkest secret? Nix: she’s not as caring as she tries to make herself out to be Rex: idk he’s a pretty open book Orion: i think he keeps a lot of things secret, but knowing where his sister is and not finding her is prob a big one Ceres: his entire past p much? he doesn’t tell anybody shit Io: i think that they feel guilt over their existence sometimes. they try not to show it bc they don’t want people to worry but they need near constant care and can be difficult to live with.

- Do they have a guilty pleasure? Nix: probably alcohol. she tries not to drink bc she has to be responsible at all times but damn does she wanna get drunk Rex: h onestly i feel like he would be into dolls and things but too embarrassed to share it Orion: eating all the ice cream. all of it Ceres: he rly likes anime... Io: they have secret social media accounts where they shitpost near constantly

- How do they express their feelings? Nix: in violent emotional outbursts or silent crying at midnight Rex: he does his best to hold it in at all times but sometimes he’ll just cry Orion: he wears his heart on his sleeve and has frequent meltdowns Ceres: he Doesn’t Io: very much phsyically. if they’re feeling something, you’ll know

- How do they react when they are proven wrong? Nix: depends. if she likes the person she’ll apologise and move on, if not she’ll just get Angery Rex: he doesn’t argue or shout unless he’s CERTAIN he’s right, so usually he’s in a situation where he can just say “oh yeah thats a good point” Orion: with confusion, mostly. knowing things grounds him, so its disorienting when he’s wrong Ceres: he’ll clench his jaw and walk away Io: [text] wot

- How do they mourn? Nix: she’s the Responsible One™ so she does her best to stay strong, but she’s very likely to lose control and resort to reckless activities Rex: loudly and angrily Orion: he withdraws and sabotages himself Ceres: he withdraws too, even more than usual. he’ll just...sit and stare at the wall Io: they don’t? understand? like when are they coming back? where did they go bring them back??

- When would they back talk someone? Nix: whenever she’s given the opportunity lmao Rex: only if they’re REALLY pissing him off Orion: not very often. probably only when somebody is talking abt his friends bc he can process that quicker Ceres: he wouldn’t. he just wouldn’t respond Io: when ppl aren’t listening to them (or whatever listening is through text)

- Do they gossip? Nix: YES and then feels bad about it later Rex: only if he knows it’s not harmful Orion: nah Ceres: no Io: lmao yes

- Would they ever be able to forgive themselves if they did something horrible? Example - Murder Nix: i think maybe? depends on the circumstances Rex: he cant even forgive himself for WITNESSING a murder when he was a kid :/ Orion: if he can rationalise it, yea Ceres: good question. the answer is i have no clue Io: i think so. it’d have to have been extreme circumstances for it to happen so they’d handle it

- Do they care about themselves or others more? Nix: herself unless it’s her friends (she has many friends) Rex: others Orion: others but he knows he needs to care abt himself more :/ Ceres: himself UNLESS it’s somebody he’s super close to Io: others BUT they’ll put their own needs first

- How would other OCs describe them? Nix: abt Rex - a solid friend. he’s safe and lovable and the one person who doesn’t depend on her abt Orion - so talented? she’s so proud of him and knows he’s gonna go far abt Ceres - after living with him for a while, he’s actually really sweet. you don’t notice him, but he notices you abt Io - the most precious lil bean!! she adores io even if they can be frustrating sometimes Rex: abt Nix - pushes herself way too hard. she needs to learn to relax so she doesn’t snap abt Orion - a good friend who he can have a real deep intelligent conversation with. lots of people underestimate him but rex knows he has a LOT to offer abt Ceres - hoo boy.....hoooooooo boy.......... abt Io - he struggles to understand io but he’s trying. the more he understands the more shocked he is at the kinda shit they text him

Orion: abt Nix - has no idea where he’d be without her, but couldn’t rely on her entirely. he’s thankful she introduced him to, and is part of, a solid support system abt Rex - he honestly loves hanging out w rex. he has so many interesting stories. while orion is more of a thinker, rex is more of a doer, so together they get up to a lot abt Ceres - ceres was the first one of them he met. he rly likes ceres. he’s a good listener. orion would like to learn more about him but he doesn’t want to push abt Io - what he loves abt io is how much they understand each other and can laugh about it. while the others definitely try, they don’t fully understand what it’s like to live as an autistic, but io does.

Ceres: abt Nix - he wants to trust her. he really really want to trust her, but deep down he doesn’t. she needs to fully and truly open up for him to trust her, but for her to do that he has to open up himself, but for him to open up he has to trust her..... abt Rex - complicated emotions. rex needs to learn how to not be taken advantage of abt Orion - persistent, but he’s grateful. without orion he doesn’t know where he’d be, and he really loves to hang out w him, especially as he’s one of the few people that doesn’t ask questions or make things awkward abt Io - he likes doing Quiet Things with io. like playing chess, baking, reading. io isn’t generally a quiet person, so he’s grateful they spend their quiet times with him Io: abt Nix - possibly one of the best people ever? while they adore their parents, without nix there’s a lot of things they wouldn’t have gotten to experience abt Rex - confusing. not the first person they’d go to in a crisis, but not the last either abt Orion - trouble buddy!! they get into trouble together a lot its great abt Ceres - needs to brush up on his chess skills bc they trash him every time but needs to ease up on his monopoly and poker skills bc they want to win ://

- How would your OC describe themselves? Nix: damn bitch you live here?? Rex: constantly just trying to fix his own mistakes Orion: existential crisis with a violin Ceres: reeeallly doesn’t know what he’s doing here Io: um?? the best Obviously ;)

- How would you as the writer describe them? Nix: nix is my eldest, and i probably have the closest relationship with her. she pushes herself too much and it only sends her backwards. she’s in a difficult position bc she has people that rely on her and they need her, but she needs to look after herself too bc she’s only gonna end up hurting the people she cares about, not to mention herself. but honestly? i love her so much. i admire her desire to go out of her way to help people, and to understand people, and i’m so happy she’s found herself a family that love her and she loves back. Rex: my boy has come so far. he’s the youngest of the group, but he’s still over a year old by now and he’s changed so much. he has such a genuine desire to make everybody happy, but like w nix needs to look after himself too bc he’s going to make himself sick. i hope to god someday he finds reason and purpose in his life and that he’s happy. Orion: such a shining light. i remember almost killing him off as soon as i made him and i’m so glad i didn’t. he has a power that draws people to him, and just seeing him smile could brighten any day. he deserves the world. i know things can be difficult for him, and people can be mean and say mean things, but he handles it so well and i am so proud that he’s found his family and he’s going to stick by them no matter what. they’re going to help him rise to the top and allow him to achieve his dreams, and he’s going to keep them with him when he does. Ceres: boyo...sweet boyo........this whole mess wasn’t his fault, no matter how much he believes it was. there’s no way he could have known what would have happened when he ran off w the promise of excitement and adventure. but yknow what it his fault? taking a chance and making a friend and it turning out w him having a family who’ll defend him to their graves. Io: my baby’s been through so much dramatic development recently, and is finally getting the attention they deserve. they’ve had a lot of luck in their life, and they’re starting to realise just how many things could have gone wrong so far, and the next step is realising that they absolutely deserve those things, and that they shouldn’t try and give things back out of obligation, but out of love.

- How well do they know their own limits? Nix: nix..knows her limits, but being a caregiver means she has to push them a lot even when she doesn’t want to. Rex: he doesn’t know his limits at all. he’s constantly finding himself at limit’s end and being unable to get out of it. Orion: he mostly knows his limits? sometimes he chooses to push them, but he’ll fight for his right to stay within them Ceres: oh nah he has no idea, and he doesn’t want to find out either Io: io knows their limits and refuses to have them pushed

that’s it and i just wanna say that if you read this far i admire your tolerance and i adore you

It gets Handsy

Sign language is very broad and different, usually sign language has its own grammar, but I will be writing them in English grammar when referring to Anxiety’s point of view because he understands the language a bit more. For prince, he is confused and still learning sign so it the grammar is funny to him, but it will basically be in English, just in a weird away. I’m still learning sign so I don’t know how the grammar works just yet.

He does finger spell most of the time, but sometimes he uses actual signs so when you see stiff like t-h-i-s- -i-t- - j-u-s-t- means he is fingerspelling (spelling each letter with the alphabet.)

((sometimes he uses the alphabet because he needs to slow his thoughts down a bit and it helped with his spelling, plus it was less inconspicuous to use finger spelling so that it was well hidden under the table for example or he just sign at his side. It also looked like he was just fidgeting with air so not many people commented on it when he would sign with his arms to his side.)))

Anxiety had been using sign language to help him stay grounded, or even to say whatever he wanted without the others understanding. It was great, and he loved it. He especially loved it to help when he was about to have a panic attack. Although it didn’t work every time, it helped give him a distraction when he could handle it. He always signed with a straight face, which he knew wasn’t the proper way to do it, but he was the only one of the sides that knew sign language. He didn’t want the others to know how he really felt. Plus, he was worried they would understand more if he showed even an expression on his face.

It was strange, letting your thoughts out, but having no one understand what you were saying. It did help slow his thoughts down though, especially when trying to figure out if he spelt something right. “G-r-e-e-n- y-e-l-l-o-w- -b-l-a-c-k- -b-r-o-w-n” Anxiety was trying to calm himself by fingerspelling whatever color he could see in front of him. He was in the coom’s room which was mostly dark green, with brown chairs. Anxiety had his yellow sunshine pillow Morality gave him, that he would snuggling with. (He would always scowl at those who judged him about it, but it made Morality happy. Plus, it was snuggly.) “w-h-y- a-m -I- l-i-k-e- -t-h-i-s- I- - h-a-t-e e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g o-h -i-t h-u r-t-s -p-l-e-a-s-e s-t-o-p -i-t -p-l-e-a-s-e p-l-e-a-s-e- -p-l-e-a-s-e.” Anxiety never liked panic attacks (who wouldn’t) but he hated it even more if he had a panic attack outside of his room. “t-h-i-s- -i-s- -g-r-e-a-t- -j-u-s-t- -g-r-e-a-t- -i-t- -w-a-s- -j-u-s-t- -f-r-e-a-k-i-n-g-l-y- -f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c-a-l-l-y- -g-r-e-a-t.”

“Anxiety are you okay?” Morality asked. He didn’t realize Morality or Prince was there until he was right in front of him. “Mh hm.” Anxiety answered, but his hands were saying “n-o -n-o- -n-o- p-l-e-a-s-e- -h-e-l-p-, - I- don’t want - -t-o- -b-e- alone -a-g-a-i-n-“ and continued, spelling all the thing in his head. Morality smiled, (but Anxiety didn't see,) not believing it, but assuming Anxiety would tell him if he was ready so he walked away, humming some tune nobody recognized. Prince frowned. He was following Morality, but it seemed like Anxiety needed him more. Plus, he wanted to see if he could understand what he was signing so he could help his crush. He had managed to read the first few letters Anxiety signed, but he didn’t get the rest. This was his moment to see if he could help Anxiety.

Prince didn’t want anyone to know he was learning until he could understand most of what Anxiety said, but he knew Anx would want company. He went across the emo side and sat across from him but on the couch, just pretending to play on his phone as he watched Anxiety. He wasn’t recording him, it was just his way of watching Anx while not actually looking at him so Anxiety didn’t feel uncomfortable. However, this made it difficult to see what Anx was signing; but he didn't want to look suspicious standing in front of the TV. “w-h-y- -d-o- -I- -h-a-v-e- -t-o- -b-e- -l-i-k-e- -t-h-i-s-? -I- -c-a-n-t- -d-o- -a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g- -r-i-g-h-t-, -w-h-y- -c-a-n-t- -i-t- -b-e- -d-o-n-e- -with. Please stop Prince is in here and I can’t have my crush see me like this.” Anxiety was trying so hard to keep breathing normally and it seemed to be working since Prince wasn’t telling him to breathe so he kept signing. Anxiety was switching from fingerspelling to signing and since Prince was new to sign it confused him a little (plus he could only see Anxiety from his side so he couldn’t see which letters were which for sure.) He was thrilled when he recognized a sign but all he could pull out was “Prince” and “crush”. He felt excited-hopeful for a minute before realizing that it was impossible for Anxiety to have a crush on him. Anxiety found him too annoying to ever crush on him. Wait, did Anxiety know he was watching from the camera? Wait, no he would be in worse condition if he thought he was being watched. Anxiety was signing with a straight face so Prince couldn’t tell how he was really feeling. Prince pretended to type on the phone and scroll but he kept watching Anxiety through the camera. “why -d-o- -I- -h-a-v-e- -t-o- feel t-h-i-s- -w-a-y-, -I-m- s-o- stupid i can’t do anything right, -w-h-y- -w-h-y- -w-h-y.” Anxiety signed. Prince understood the sign “cant,” and the letters “w-y” which he figured out was “why” after the third spelling. He was too fast and he never really understood it but he could grasp some of signs-kind of. He watched Anxiety for a few minutes trying to grab anything he could understand but he was singing so fast. He saw “I” and a sign that looked like “like” but it looked like he was throwing it away or-Wait, that meant “don’t like!” He was excited to understand more so he watched closer.

Wait did he just say he “I don’t like me?” Horror settled in his face when he realized what Anxiety had just said. “I hate myself.” His heart hurt but he continued watching. All he could grasp was “Everyone hates you,” and “don’t deserve help”

All Prince could do stare in shock. I mean, he knew that Anxiety hated people, but he never thought he hated himself. He always acted confident.

Well that was hypocritical, Prince felt the same way about himself and people always said they admired him for his confidence, although he barely had any. After a few more minutes of Anxiety’s attack, his singing slowed down and he seemed more relaxed. Hesitantly, Prince asked “is that you really think of yourself?”

Anxiety stopped signing. “W-what?” Anxiety croaked. “What you singed the whole time-is that what you really think about yourself?” Anxiety was horrified. “Wh-what” Anxiety could barely let it out. How could he have forgotten about his dislike for surprises. “Its okay, Prince, at least you can understand him when he starts signing. My advice would be to offer to watch a movie with Anxiety. Why c-a-n-t I figure out what the sign for that is. Okay but seriously Prince, how could he?! Well he was trying to be nice but why -d-i-d he have to do that! -U-g- If I had any chances of being closer to him I’ve lost it all know. Why do I always ruin everything?” Anxiety started signing with one hand, since his other was under his head. He was growing tired, he hated being this tired, but maybe this time he could get some sleep. He could hear a knock at the door. Anxiety frowned and turned to face the door.

“Hi, it-its Prince. I just wanted to apologize.”

Anxiety sighed and grabbed any energy he could and walked to the door, opening it. Ah great, Prince had something behind his back, is it a weapon?

“Didn’t you just watch it like last week?” Anxiety signed furrowing his eyebrows again. He was glad Prince didn’t understand the part that he signed about his crush; although, he was pissed that Roman knew some of what he said, he was more embarrassed, and frankly too tired to talk about it. “Yeah, but I’ve missed my darling babies!!” Prince smiled as he brought out “The Black Cauldron” DVD from behind his back, “I thought maybe you would want to watch it in your room? Or not, that’s perfectly fine, whatever you feel up to.” Prince smiled hopefully. Maybe Anxiety could see that Prince wanted to bond with him after the horrible mistake he made. Anxiety rolled his eyes but replied “come on” and signed the alphabet too fast for Princey to make out. Prince looked at him confused and tried to copy what Anxiety just did. Anxiety noticed so he sighed it slower “S-i-r- -s-i-n-g- -a- -l-o-t.”

After a couple more tries Prince understood. “Ah, thank you!” Prince said and signed, smiling walking into his room. He was surprised to see how dark and dirty the room was. There was light emitting from the window, so he could still see the room very well but the color made it look dark.

“So, do you want to watch it in here?” Prince askes suddenly feeling stupid. Anxiety probably wouldn’t have invited him into his room of he wanted to do it in the coom’s room. Anx frowned but signed;

“I’d prefer my room, I don’t like how bright it is out there,” Anxiety signed the last part by squinting his eyes as if his hand were the sun. “Wow he’s great at signing! Why is he so adorable?” Prince snapped out of his thoughts when he noticed Anxiety was waiting for him to reply, so he placed the DVD under his armpit and signed; “Where did you learn sign?” Prince signed, eye furrowed. “Internet. I was mostly learning for myself before I got interested in the culture around it. It was an intriguing read.” Anxiety signed puckering his lips at the end.

Prince had never seen Anxiety use as much expression as he was using right now. It was very cute! He wanted to keep singing with him, to see how much cuter he could be, but he could see Anxiety was tired.

“Alright I’ll plug in the movie now.” Prince signed, turning to the TV. He turned the power on and set up the DVD. He went to the settings and turned the subtitles on; it actually helped Roman to read better, since he had such difficulty and he knew Anxiety liked to read instead of listen sometimes, especially if he put his headphones on.

The movie started and Prince stared at the screen, watching the scene play out. He was getting so into the movie that he almost didn’t notice Anxiety leaning towards his shoulder. The horned king was smirking at him and slowly pointed at him. His armies were now surrounding him, shaking him and screeching. “Let go of me! Prince! No!”

Anxiety pulled away suddenly causing Prince to fall over a little and started signing. “Oh Prince, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean- I don’t know what came over me. I’m sorry- I” Anxiety was starting to shake as he signed and kept rambling, not knowing what to say and hating himself for being such an idiot. Prince was a little hurt but the sudden stop, thinking that Anxiety hated it, but when he saw Anxiety was about to cry, he was confused. Prince snapped out of his thinking; he needed to help his prince.

“No- no its okay-I -I liked it.” Prince said, blushing. Anxiety looked at him, he was on the verge of tears.

“You did?” he signed, hands shaking. “Yeah, and I’d like to do it again if you don’t mind- and only if you want to, we don’t have to do anything you don’t want.” Prince was embarrassed and he would’ve just kissed him, but he didn’t want to make Anxiety uncomfortable if he was on the verge of crying. Anx hesitated before he leaned forward (Prince doing the same) and gently place his lips on his Prince. Lets just say things got a little handsy.

I'm a hot rod & kustom guy, have building and restoring old cars for awhile now..love the looks of em and the feeling I get driving them, I'm opening up my own shop soon too. I drive a 2001 Grand Am GT and it's about to die 190,000 miles needs tires, brakes, bearings, engines making noises but for the price I paid and miles I put on it, it worked well. Now I need a new daily drive to school 72 miles round trip 2-3 times a week. I live in Michigan, was wondering what it would be like to drive an classic car as a daily...say a 1958 Chevy Bel Air with a 283 motor...the insurance is cheaper, easier to fix and find parts..but may be more in gas...just wondering if anyone drives a classic everyday and how is it in the winter...I'd have to figure out heat some how. I purchased a townhome in March of 2013 for $183k in Florida. It is in a 200-unit subdivision that just completed all construction and sold out all last remaining units a few months ago. When I signed up for home insurance, the insurance company set my dwelling coverage to $183k. I told them that it isn't accurate for them to base dwelling coverage on market price because the replacement cost must be lower since market price includes land and profits the builder makes. Long story short, they convinced me to stay at $183 because they said costs were rising and so forth. I decided not to fight it. Fast forward to this year, and now they are proposing to increase the dwelling coverage to $203k (11% increase). Funny thing is that for my exact townhome model, about 20 units were sold in the last year with prices averaging in the upper $180s (slightly above what I paid). I called the insurance company to let them have a piece of my mind, and they told me they use an independent 3rd party company to price the replacement costs. I told them it's BS because it's way above average market price and replacement costs is always below market price. They asked me to send them documents from when I purchased the home that details the construction materials used and upgrades so that they can reevaluate the dwelling coverage. My question is, why is the burden of proof on me to prove to the insurance company that dwelling coverage should be lowered? Why can't they just reduce it to what I tell them to reduce it to? After all, I am the customer who pays for the insurance. If my house is ever destroyed and I underinsured, that's my problem not theirs. I just find it strange that I'm paying for an insurance service and the insurance company decides what the replacement cost is, not me. Even though it doesn't affect them.""

Will my medical insurance pay for my transportation to work. I just had my drivers license suspended for MEDICAL REASONS. PLEASE HELP!

Detained on Nauru: ‘This is the most painful part of my story when you realise no one cares’

In this excerpt from the book They Cannot Take the Sky, Benjamin talks about his years detained on Nauru, and his undying hopes for the future

Benjamin was taken to Nauru in 2013 with his family. He told the first part of this story on Christmas Day 2014. He is still on Nauru.

You just have to cope with it

We were in Offshore Processing Centre compound number 3 the family compound in the Nauru detention facility for a year and three weeks. In that time lots of things happened between us and Wilsons, the security guards running the camp, especially with my father because everyone trusted him. So if problems happened, people would tell my father and my father would try to help. But after a couple of months the Wilsons tried to somehow punish us as a family, you know, for just simple things. One day my father was in the line for food and the Wilson didnt let him go inside he sent another family in rather than us. My father tried to just talk to them but suddenly they called the police. Police came and they sent my father straight to custody.

My father had a stroke when he was in custody. Hes a little better now, after four or five months, but hes still really not able to use the left side of his body very well.

Because of the stroke, they sent my father alone to Darwin. They gave us a time to visit just before he left. There was a neck brace around his neck and he was in a wheelchair. I could just see him for 15 minutes and then they took him away and sent him to Darwin. I was 18 at that time and my sisters were all minors. There wasnt a guardian for us, but they let us be inside a camp. My sisters, they all got lots of problems. They couldnt sleep at night. Me either.

I went to the psychologist and I told her, Ive got these types of problems, and she said, You just have to cope with it. You cannot go to where your father is. You just have to wait until he comes back. I warned them that if they didnt give me any answer at least tell me how my father is I would suicide, and she laughed at me and said, Go, do what you want to do. And so I cut my wrists and my hand, because I couldnt control it anymore. It was too much for me. And the funny thing is, they didnt care. They said, If you keep trying to do this we will send you to the custody too.

My sisters came and they saw lots of blood coming out of my body and they called Wilson.

When my father heard that I cut myself, he did his own protest. He sat in the wheelchair and he didnt eat, he didnt move, he didnt drink anything.

Im still feeling that Im not a human

After this, things happened to my father too. When he first went to Darwin he was in the family camp. He was a single male but he was in the family camp. I had a friend over there in the family camp who was looking after him. I was little bit OK because I knew my friend was helping, but after my fathers protest they sent him to the single camp. In the single camp he was totally alone. There was nobody to help him. When I heard this I tried to talk to immigration about it and tell them that this was not fair, what theyre doing to my father, that my father needs someone to help him. But they didnt answer me, they just forgot about it.

After two months they sent my father back here, to Nauru. He was still the same. In that time they didnt do any medical checks for him. He was just wasting his time over there. My case manager came and said, Your father is back in Nauru. I was so shocked and a little bit happy too because I thought that maybe hes OK. I went to OPC1 with my sisters to see him. I was sitting there with my sisters, talking with them, and suddenly one of the cultural advisors came his name was Darryl and he told me, Your father has to go back to the gaol. I asked him, Why? I tried to tell them it was against the rules if someone is not medically well, you dont put them in custody but they didnt care. I said, If you want to take my father you have to take me too because I need to look after him.

My father was in custody for three days and they just let me be with him only for one night. After that we went to OPC1. We were there for months. They kept sending my father to court for what had happened, just for a simple argument. We just kept going to the court, every day, and at the end of it they found that my father was not guilty and they sent us back to OPC3.

For now I dont have any plan for my future because I am still feeling that I am captured. Im still feeling that Im not a human. Im still thinking about whats happened in the past. I cant think about what I am now, and what Ill do in the future.

I just need to get my freedom first, then Ill try to find my way somehow.

Nearly two years later, in October 2016, Benjamin continued his story.

We have beautiful dreams, but everything has been ruined

Im still here.

I came here when I was 18 and now Im nearly 22 years old. I wasted all of the best time in my entire life, the time that I was about to make my future happen, the time that I promised myself I would study hard and become the best. But I couldnt, because of the Australian government.

Five months ago, my neighbour, his name was Omid, he burnt himself right in front of my eyes. We have beautiful dreams, we have beautiful futures, but everything has been ruined. We are all exhausted.

That day, my neighbour Omid, he burned himself in front of me and I still cannot forget it. Omid was a good person. I still feel unhappy, I still feel stressed about him. I still punish myself, Why didnt I make him stop? But I didnt know that he was gonna do it, and he did it in front of me. He burned himself. I tried to go and put the fire out on his body, but I couldnt do it and he died. And I still punish myself because I think that if I was a bit smarter I could have saved him.

Omid Masoumali, a 23-year-old Iranian refugee who set himself alight in protest outside a refugee compound on Nauru. He died in a Brisbane hospital on 29 March 2016.

When the UNHCR people came to our settlement to talk to refugees, Omid and his wife were the first ones they met.

I dont know what happened but I just saw that Omid and his wife went to their house and after like five to 10 minutes Omid came back and he was soaked in petrol and he was shouting, Im tired and we are all tired and I cannot take it anymore.

He was actually complaining to the government of Australia.

Its enough. Whatever we have suffered in all these years, it is enough, for we are innocent people. Were not terrorists. We are innocent people and we were just seeking freedom.

And then he just turned the lighter on and set himself on fire. I ran to him and tried to put him out with blankets but I … he was still conscious when we took him to hospital. He was there, he was having so much pain. The hospital here is a very, very bad hospital. When this kind of incident happens, the Australian government asks for an ambulance aeroplane to come to Nauru immediately, but for Omid it took like 12 hours or more than that. He was suffering from the pain and no one could help him. The ambulance came late and he died. After he got back to Australia, the Australian government didnt even pay for the body to be transferred to Iran. Omids family paid for that.

He burned himself to show it around the world, to big countries, that there is no hope, there is no happiness, there is no life here.

This is not a place that I can live

The payments that we receive from the Australian government are very low. We get just $200 each per fortnight which is not enough for all of us, you know. Living here is very expensive. The food and everything is all imported from Australia. You have to spend all your money just buying your food.

We are still having stress about water. When we were in the camp we were having problems with showering we only had a right to shower for three minutes and now we are outside we still have those problems. Just today they told us that theres a shortage of water so you have to be careful with it. We were protesting and they sent me to court for unlawful assembly, which I dont understand. I should have a right to make a peaceful protest so I can tell the world that this is not a place that I can live. We are desperately seeking other powerful countries to help us and release us from this inhuman policy. This is the most painful part of my story when you realise no one cares.

I wanted to study. I put myself into danger coming to Australia. My main requirement was having freedom freedom of speech, a society where people respect human rights. My plan was to study hard. I had finished my diploma of pure maths and physics, but I wanted to study more … maybe civil engineering or electrical engineering. But with all these punishments in these three years I became so lazy I cannot even read a book right now.

I always try to forget the bad incidents that happened to me before, so I just go to the gym. Try to lose some energy so I can relax. Its not a very good gym, but at least it is something. This is the best vocation you can have: going to the gym and coming back home.

I always try to be charming

My dad is much better … he is physically good now. But mentally hes worse than before. Most of the time he is at home and not doing anything, because there is nothing to do. He feels guilty because he is thinking, I have ruined my childrens future.

There is a very, very cold relationship in every family here. I mean, you get frustrated very quickly. You cannot talk fairly and make good decisions, because your mind has been punished a lot. Our life is like this, you know? We are unhappy so everything goes in a bad way. For example, I always try to keep my family motivated. I always say, like, Im 100% sure that in 2017 we are gonna get out of this island. I always say this. Every month Ill say that next month there will be good news from the immigration department of Australia. I always try to motivate them, but they always say, No, its an illusion.

Ill try to do something, but it always turns out that I make it worse because I have hope. They say, No, you lied to us. My sisters always say, You lied to us last year. You told us that we were gonna go out of here in 2015, but we are still here and its 2016. These kinds of things.

We talk about immigration, we talk about whats gonna happen, we read all the media. We try to make our own observations from there. It always turns out that we discuss it for two hours and we finish in a very unhappy mood. I have to say, we have those conversations every day. [Laughs.]

Sometimes time goes very quickly, but sometimes, it really kills you. Like when we reach the end of the year, because we expect something magical, like at Christmas … that Santa brings a gift. We wait to see if maybe Mr Peter Dutton will announce something that we have wanted to hear for all these years. But it never happens. [Laughs.]

I usually dont show my pain or my frustration to my family. I try to keep it to myself. Whenever I go inside our room, I always try to be charming. This is what I do, I always try to keep the energy up, because I dont like to upset them. I am upset, but I never show it.

If I want to be honest, the only thing that I enjoy is going to gym and coming back home. But my family doesnt enjoy that. My sisters want to go to a decent shopping mall, buy some good food, buy some good clothes. Or maybe they want to go to a cinema, or a zoo. But the only entertainment that we have here is just drinking alcohol. Forget whats happening and just get drunk for a night.

I have good friends here, even Nauruan friends. The Nauruans I hang out with, they really understand our situation and most of them have been studying in Fiji and Australia. They are qualified people and they respect humanity. When you hang out with them, you enjoy it, because they dont get insulted if you say something about the governments of Nauru or Australia. These two governments have created all these traumas. The people are innocent, you know?

The problem with my refugee friends is we cant really tolerate each other anymore. I mean, we live here without excitement. We see each other every day, talk about the same old things. We get tired of each other. Im not saying this in a bad way, but this is a human being you feel discouraged. Seriously, we dont have anything to say to each other anymore! We know everything, whatever happened from when hes born until now. Its like time has been stopped.

It will be like Im reborn

My situation has changed. Ive learned how to be strong and keep myself motivated, so Im not doing any self-harming and suicide. Sometimes the Australian government makes me worse. For example, when Peter Dutton says refugees are uneducated, or Scott Morrison says we need to live here forever so Australias borders are safe and sound. I just try to heal my pain so I dont get really out of control. I have learned that even if I … did something crazy to myself, nothing will change. I just have to make myself healthy, so if I get out of here I could try to show the Australian government that Im not a bad person, Im actually a very useful person, and a very successful person. And Im surely gonna do that.

I have read books about what successful people have done in their lives. For example, Mahatma Gandhi, Barack Obama, and also, Larry Page, founder of Google, and all of those people. So many people I cannot count them [laughing]. Ive read their books, Ive learned from them with all the struggles they had, they could still manage their lives and become successful.

Im sure that one day Im going to get out of here and reach my main goal, which is freedom. Yeah, I imagine I will enter a country where there are more opportunities, so I can improve myself, I can improve my education. I will start my new life it will be like Im reborn. Itll be a very big event. Im sure its going to happen and it will be soon. It will be very soon.
