FebFicFight Rides Again

Today’s bit o’ writing may be familiar -- the idea came from a screenshot of a tweet about someone’s D&D game, and it’s been making the rounds. I just expanded it into a scene.

This was fun. Enjoy!

The road through this patch of wildlands was usually free of bandits, and those that Jaenot had already encountered were easily scared off by her speed-drawn revolvers. But even her skills weren’t enough when pitted against a half-dozen dragon worshippers with immobility spells.

She froze in place between one stride and the next, toppling into the dirt like an unbalanced statue. Mentally she was swearing and going over her options. Outwardly she could only stare at the ground while footsteps pattered around her.

The voices were human, and the oh-so-pleased conversation told her everything she needed to know. At least when they started hauling her away to her death, they used a wheeled cart instead of just dragging her by an ankle. Jaenot supposed that the dragon wouldn’t like dirty food.

She tried not to panic. There was one wild gambit that might work, depending on a number of factors that she couldn’t control. What color was the dragon? What else was being sacrificed? She couldn’t turn her head, but she watched for any clues that might pass in front of her. Judging by the glimpses of clothing, these cultists worshipped a black dragon. Jaenot’s heart sped up. She had a chance.

Swampy smells filled the air, telling Jaenot that they were getting close. The cart slowed down, navigating carefully along the dry path through the muck. The cultists were talking more quietly now. Definitely close.

Then the cart stopped, and Jaenot found herself being lifted and set face-up on the dry ground. The cultists scrambled around her, genuflecting in the mud by the sounds of it. None spoke.

Then a loud voice rumbled. “WHAT HAVE YOU BROUGHT ME?”

Jaenot felt it vibrate through the dirt. The lead cultist spoke up from behind her.

“Great Dragon, we bring you this human and this chest of gold in sacrifice.”

The dragon shifted in place, scales grating. “VERY GOOD. HUMAN, DO YOU HAVE ANY LAST WORDS?”

The spell released its grip on Jaenot, and she scrambled to her feet. Bald cultists in black robes stood up around her, one holding a wooden chest. They watched her with half of their attention, while the rest was devoted to their god.

Jaenot looked up to see a terrifyingly large black dragon lounging in the swamp. Its red eyes watched her closely.

Jaenot spread her arms. “Great Dragon!” she exclaimed. “I have brought you these six cultists and this chest of gold in sacrifice!”

Everything was silent except for Jaenot’s heartbeat. Then the dragon laughed.

“I LIKE YOU,” it said in a voice like an avalanche. “DUCK.”

Jaenot threw herself into the mud while a jet of fire incinerated the cultists before they could do more than scream. Several crunches and gulps while Jaenot held her position, then the dragon launched itself into the air with mighty wingbeats and a spray of swampwater. It chuckled while it flew away.

Thoroughly drenched but alive, Jaenot got up.

The cart was still there. No sign of the cultists or the chest of gold other than some blackened trees and a steaming patch of swamp. The dry part of the path was wider now.

Jaenot stood for a moment, then began the long walk back to the road pulling the cart behind her. Once cleaned up, it might be worth something. She’d come out ahead on this detour after all. And she’d have the best story to win drinks with at the inn tonight.
