Months ago, you witnessed a naโvi manย jump off a cliff into the river below to escape a Thanator. Something told you to help him, maybe Eywa. You found out it was just another avatar sent from the sky people, so you left as fast as you saved him. But he followed you. He followed you and kept nagging you against your wishes. You were glad he did, because if not the two of you wouldnโt be lovers.ย ย
He finally told you the truth after the Tree of Voices was bulldozed. The two of you fell asleep, next thing you knew you were pulling his hefty body over thick branches. Mere inches from the sharp blades of the machinery that was destroying your home.
โJake!โ You sobbed into your hands when the two of you made it to safety. โWhy didnโt you wake up!โ Jake had his arms outstretched, trying to pull you into him. โI couldnโt-โ You showed him your reddening hands from pulling tightly on the bands that wrapped his body. โI almost let go. I wasnโt strong enough.โ You cried, thinking of how close you were to losing him, and how it wouldโve been your fault if he got caught between the blades.
โIt was me. It was my fault.โ He cooed. โI wasnโt here and iโm sorry.โ He apologized.
After stroking your biceps he was finally able to calm you down, only hearing an occasional sniffle. โItโs like a brain thing.โ He started. โWhen I go to sleep in this body, I go to my other body.โ
โYour human body?โ
โYes.โย
โAnd when you come to this body, you leave your other one?โ
โSโmthin like that.โ
You wiped the residue of tears from your eyes and smiled. โAs cool as that is, I canโt risk that happening again.โ You looked at him sternly. He nodded in agreement, feeling pretty shaken up himself from the whole ordeal. โWhy donโt we keep your body closer to your human one in case?โ You suggested.
โI- no I don't think that's a good idea.โ He immediately responded. You noticed the flash of panic in his eyes as he shot the idea down. โJust a midway point. Between our home and yours.โ
Jake plastered a false smile on his face, โA midway point. And for our safety, you wonโt cross that midway point.โ
โJake, you canโt ban me from a certain part of the forest.โ You frowned.ย
โNo baby, it's not like that.โ He grabbed your face. โWe just have so many trackers at the station, I donโt want anyone seeing you there with us.โ Something in your gut told him to question him further, but in the moment what he was saying made sense. You smiled and nodded, leaning in to lock your lips with his.ย
Later that day the two of you found a nice spot in the trees, that was safe enough to build somewhat of a shelter for the two of you. It was nice seeing Jake put so much work into your temporary โhomeโ. It made you excited for the future, when the two of you would have the proper space needed to start a family.ย
Daily, you two would fall asleep together, and the longer you did this, the more you felt that he actually left you in the night. You often stayed up, watching his unconscious body, secretly wanting him to wake up from the poking and prodding you subjected him to. Sometimes, he would be gone for hours in the day, so you often went out to collect food for when he got back.ย
This continued until one day, you were paid a visit from two familiar scientists. Jake had been sleeping for two days now, so the visit couldn't be a good sign.
โGrace! Norm!โ You hopped down from the high branch and met them on the forest ground. โWhat's going on?โ You looked between them.
โWellโฆJake hasnโt been taking care of himselfโฆโ Grace started.ย
โWeโre not letting him reconnect until his real body is in good condition again.โ Norm blurted. Grace looked at him annoyed, but sighed. โJake has gotten too skinny, and he's extremely dehydrated. We love his enthusiasm, but at the end of the day heโs still human.โ
Heโs still human.
You palmed your face, completely forgetting that he still had his own obligations back with the Sky People.ย
โYou can visit if you like.โ Grace perked up. You smiled and nodded. โOf course I will. Do you think heโll like that?โ
โHe wonโt stop talking about you.โ Norm grumbled. Grace nudged his shoulder. โOf course heโll love it.โ She said.
The two scientists departed as it got darker, and you headed back to Jakeโs avatar body. Tidying him up just a little and making sure his body was up to par when he got back.
Morning came and you made your way towards the station, bearing gifts. Necklace for grace, a fan lizard for Norm, and Jake would get his as soon as he woke upโฆ.in his avatar. You peeked through the trees, and saw the station sitting in an empty section of the forest. In the window of the station, you saw a flash of orange hair. โGrace!โ You exclaimed. You began walking over, coming closer to the window that separated you from them. In the back you were able to see Norm, looking in a book or something. Then you saw a man in a wheelchair, facing away from the window.
โMa Jake?!โ You knocked on the glass. The man snapped his head around, and immediately spread a shocked look all over his face. He was a little, skinny, white man, with a buzzcut. You excitedly waved, and made a heart shape with your hands, but he quickly looked away, and rolled himself to another part of the station where you couldnโt see. Grace waved you back, signaling that he was going back to his avatar body.ย
You sprinted towards your shared shelter and arrived right as Jake was hopping down from the trees
. โJake!โ You said excitedly. But he looked at you hurt, almost betrayed.
โI told you to never go over there!โ
โJake I-โ
โNEVER!โ He snapped. Your ears flattened, and you flinched back at his sudden burst of anger. He had a sorry look in his eyes, but sighed and walked off.ย
โJ-Jake!โ You softly said, pathetically walking behind him. โI-I did your hair, and made you food.โ You said, hoping that he would notice the amount of effort you put into caring for him when he was away, but he kept silent. โTalk to me.โ You whined, tripping over a branch in the process. He stopped in his tracks, immediately moving to pick you up by the armpits.ย โNot here.โ He grabbed your hand and led you through the forest, stepping over flowers and marshย to end up at a river bank.
You sat criss cross on the ground, reaching your hand out so Jake could sit across from you. โNow talk. Don't yell at me.โ
โI'm sorry.โ He apologized. โI justโฆwanted to do everything I could to stop you from seeing me like that.โ
โLike what?!โ
โWeak. Small. Human.โ He shook his head. โI didn't want you toโฆ..see me and leave meโฆโ You learned forward and grabbed his face. โI would never Jake. I love you, flaws and all.โ He tilted his head and you now saw the tears that threatened to spill from his eyes. Jake wasn't a crier, so this alarmed you. โI can't walk.โ He choked out. โI can't even clean myself properly Y/n.โ You stroked his cheek as he stumbled over his words. โI was in the military, andโฆ.I fucked up,ย I don't know how but I fucked up, and next thing you know I was shot in my spine.โ He motioned towards his back. โI lost all feeling from my waist down. I can't move.โ He shook his head.ย โI was immediately sent home. Then I wasted my days in bars causing trouble because I was so angry. At myself.โ He hissed. โI was such an embarrassment.โ
Jake took in a deep breath and leaned in, pressing his forehead against yours. โThen I got here, got this body, and everything changed. I fell in love with the forest,ย fell in love with you.โ He said silently. You smiled brightly, and let out a soft chuckle. โI fell in love with you too ma Jake.โ
โLife has gotten so much better, here with youโฆI just want to forget about the pathetic life I lived before.โ
โDonโt say that.โ You scolded. โEverything that has happened brought you to me. You wouldnโt be the man you are if it werenโt for the life you lived.โ You reassured him. He nodded in agreement, and hesitantly leaned into you. You accepted his kiss, grabbing hold of his back to pull him closer. He maneuvered and got you down flat on the ground, deepening the kiss. โCan I see you?โ You mumbled into his lips.โ
โWhat?โ He pulled away.ย
โI want to see you.โ You heaved. โPlease? I'm gonna prove to you that all I care about,โ You pressed your hand to his chest. โIs this.โ You balled your hand into a fist and knocked softly on his head. โAnd this.โ
Jake softly smiled and agreed, leading you back to the station where Grace and Norm greeted you. Suddenly, Jake fell to the ground. โJake!โ You ran to his aid, but then turned to look at the station, realizing he was coming. You watched Grace move around the station, then place a mask on her face.
You watched with your eyebrows raised as the doors to the station began to open.
You cooed softly, watching Jake roll himself down the ramp and into the patch of grass that idly sat in front of the station. Your tail swang back and forth as you approached him, sitting to match his height.
โThis is me.โ Jake held his arms out. You reached out to touch him, poking his cheek with your index finger. โYou're so cute.โ You gushed. Jake's face dropped and he rolled his eyes. โI am a man, not cute.โ
โOh ma Jake.โ You reached your hands out, allowing his smaller ones to graze your palms. You looked down and noticed his legs that were rid of muscle mass. He followed your eyes with his own as you inspected every inch of him. โYou are still my strong warrior.โย
โYou're just saying that.โ
โAm not! If I were human and saw you, I would do everything in my power to mate with you.โ Jake scoffed and began laughing, for real this time. โI'm serious!โ
Jake smiled and placed his hand atop yours. โI love you girl.โ
โI love you more Ma Jake.โ

โGet here!โ Jake yelled at Loโak. โI let the two geniuses fly a mission and you disobey direct orders?!โ
You hopped off your ikran and walked over to the crowd of Sullyโs that stood slumped at another one of Jake's outbursts.
โK-Kiri go help your grandmother with the wounded.โ
โMy brother is wounded.โ She responded.
โPlease-Tuk! Go with her. Go!โ He continued yelling.
โFather- Sir,โ Neteyam said groggily. โI take full responsibility-โ
โThat's right! Because you are the older brother, you need to act like it.โ
โJake!โ You yelled with your eyebrow cocked. โYour son is bleeding!โ You interrupted, hoping he would let the boys off just this once.
โMama it's fine-โ
โGone get patched up.โ Jake dismissed Neteyam.
You escorted your older son towards the medical pod, where you continued to overhear Jake yelling.
โDo you understand you almost got your brother killed.โ
โYes sir.โ
โYou're grounded. No flying for a month.โ
This was a regular occurrence for the Sullys. Something would go wrong and Jake would go down the line, one by one, kid by kid, lecturing them. As their mother, you also had to put your foot down at times, but you werenโt as strict as Jake. You began to watch your children slowly fall into a state of depression. They became more tense when Jake entered the room, they were silent during dinners, they didn't even go explore the forest anymore. Even Tuk began hiding her toys, afraid Jake would punish her by taking them away.
Guilt followed you soon after. It was your job to be there for them, and you had managed to let their mental health decline under your watch. You did feel it was your fault, knowing that you sat back so many times and watched Jake snap at your kids.
But you had enough.
โDidnโt I tell you?! Didn't I warn you boy?!โ Jake yelled at Loโak again. โOFF LIMITS THE SHACK WAS OFF LIMITS!โ He stepped closer to the boy and yelled in his face. โYou had Tuk! You tryna get your little sister killed?โ Loโak averted his eyes to you but quickly looked back at his father when he noticed. โLook here boy!โ He snapped again.
โEnough.โ You walked over and slapped Jake on the shoulder. โKids go play.โ You shooed them out of the shared space.
โAre you serious Y/n?! He went too far this time! Nothing you can say will make this easier on him.โ Jake sternly said. โYou are his mother! If anything, you need to be watching out for them as much as I do.โ
You stepped back, scoffing at your husband's jab. โYou calling me a bad mother? Jake, I was fucking scared too! They are children, they will be curious, the world is theirs to explore!โ You yelled back. โItโs not their fault our enemy from 14 years ago popped up again! You should be comforting them, not yelling in their faces!โ
โThey need structure! They donโt have that. None of them, especially Loโak, should be fucking up this often!โ
โStructure?!โ You placed your hands on your hips. โThey're fucking scared of you Jake! They don't even call you dad anymore, you're sir! You have to dismiss them like their fucking soldiers! We're a family, not a squadron!โ You hissed.
โI don't earn respect, I demand it, especially from my own family.โ
โOh? So I should start calling you Colonel Sully from now on?โ
โYou're doing too much-โ
โNo! I'm not-โ
โYou are! Any other time you sit back and let them do whatever they want. It's like I'm the only parent here! They respect me, can we say the same about you?โ You smiled, tears welling in your eyes. Pregnant silence fell between you two, and the tension in the room grew heavy. โI can't do this. Can't do it.โ You whispered. โOh Eywa I didn't want it to ever come down to this.โ A few tears slipped from your closed eyes.
โNow what do you suggest?โ Jake said snarkily.
โWe should split up.โ
It felt as if the entire village went silent. Jakeโs face, along with his stomach dropped. Panic began to wrap and enclose his throat in its grip. โI can't do this. We can't do this, our kids need a break dammit!โ You shouted.
โHey,โ Jake began grabbing at you but you removed your arms each time he made contact. โHey, Hey, Hey! Y/n baby look at me. Talk to me please.โ He began getting desperate.
You looked at him with a deep frown, and tears running down your cheeks. โYou don't listen! I have been telling you. I HAVE BEEN TELLING YOU.โ You shouted at him.
Jake became more persistent, and now had you in a bear hug, rubbing your back and shushing you. His chest was tight, and he felt like sobbing. The thought of you leaving him? And to know it would be his fault. โI can't! I can't!โ You pushed him away and stormed out the pod with tears in your eyes.
That same day, the kids and you came by, grabbing a few items from their rooms before leaving to stay with Moโat. Jake cried his eyes out that night, having multiple panic attacks and sharp pains in his stomach. He knew he fucked up bad, and what was most disappointing was that it took you threatening to leave him for him to realize that.
Jake needed to look back, deeply reflect on everything you said. He thought back to his kidsโs mannerisms, and how they used to act. Loโak was the carbon copy of himself, Kiri was down to Pandora, Tuk was an energy ball all around, and Neteyam was cool and collected. He did notice his kids' downturned ears, the silence that appeared when he came around, the fearful staring. It hit him how quiet Tuk had become, and he knew his little one was so hard to shake up.
Jake spent a few nights like this, cheating himself out of sleep and thinking back to all the details he missed.
After a week of moping and thinking, he finally sought you out right before another insurrection. You stood, picking out your arrows to put in the holster that was attached to the ikran. He noticed your fatigued state, how you didn't stand straight, and how it seemed a smile hadnโt appeared on your face since the argument.
โY/n.โ He announced himself. You looked up and sighed, turning to look away from him.
โCan we talk?โ He walked closer.
โAbout what?!โ You hissed.
โEverything.โ
You huffed and set your bow aside. โDon't move until I get back.โ You called out to your team. Jake led you to your once shared home, and turned to face you. You closed the entrance to give the two of you privacy. โI'm sorry.โ Jake started. โI should've noticed the signs earlier. I should've communicated my fear of losing them instead of punishing them for my own fears.โ You nodded, agreeing with him.
โI let my experiences with the Sky People trigger something in me, causing me to treat you and the kids like the squad I ran back on earth. But you guys aren't my squad, you're my family.โ He approached you. โI love you Y/n. I love all of you so much. I will change, I promise I will. I hate that it took you leaving me to realize that.โ
You wiped your leaking eyes, and leaned into your husband. A glimpse of the old Jake Sully. One thing you knew was that Jake made sure to keep his promises. Even after the destruction of the home tree he did everything he could to gain your trust again.
โDon't leave me.โ He whispered. โPlease donโt leave.โ
You looked up at him, noses nearly touching each other. โIโm not going anywhere Jakeโฆbut you need to apologize to the kids too. Show them that you can act like a father, and treat them with care. Not their Colonel.โ
โYes, maโam.โ Jake placed a quick peck on your nose, before tilting his head and clasping his lips around yours.
---
The attack against the Sky People was successful. The clan was able to get more supplies and resources for the village. โSully's fall in!โ Jake called out as the lot of you landed back on the mountain. You watched your kids exchange looks, before following their father home.
โEveryone have a seat.โ Jake ordered them. They sat quickly, and stiffly. Jake squatted, looked down and sighed heavily. โIt has come to my attention that the lot of you are afraid of me.โ
The kids looked at each other again.
โAnd I am so sorry I have pushed you to the point of feeling that way towards me.โ He apologized. โI just get so-โ He began choking up. โI get so scaredโฆwhen you kids are in danger and out of my reach. I thought maybe putting some structure into you, it would make my job easier.โ
โBut somehow I managed to turn my entire family against me.โ He paused and looked across their faces, before stopping at Loโak. โCome here boy.โ He stood, and hesitantly walked over to his father, squatting down to reach his height.
โWhen I was human, I managed to paralyze myself from the waist down. Thinking nobody could tell me nothin cause I knew it all.โ He began shaking his head. โI'm so hard on you because I see you doing the same things that led to me being immobile. I want you to become strong, and more responsible. But I love you son, and I never want you to question that.โ Jake placed his hand on his younger son's head, embracing him in a fatherly manner.
โNeteyam,โ He motioned for him to come next. โI shouldn't burden you. Especially as the oldest. Your siblings don't reflect you, so you no longer need to take responsibility for their mistakes. I do ask that you guide them the best you can. I see you, and I see who you will become.โ Neteyam sniffled, folding his lips in to restrain himself from letting his tears slip.
โKiri, Tuk.โ He recruited the last two standing Sullys. They ran over to him and joined the group embrace. โYou two are my very special girls. It may be harder letting the two of you go, but I want you to be as free as you want.โ He wrapped his arms around all 4 of his children, holding the now crying Sully kids.
You stood, holding your elbows, letting tears slip on your own as the children accepted their father again. Jake opened his eyes, and looked at you. โMy wife, my beautiful wife. Cโmere.โ You knelt down and crawled over to him, joining the family hug heโd initiated.
โI love you all so much.โ
